Abstract: Conservationists commonly have framed ecological concerns in economic terms to garner political support for conservation and to increase public interest in preserving global biodiversity. Beginning in the early 1980s, conservation biologists adapted neoliberal economics to reframe ecosystem functions and related biodiversity as ecosystem services to humanity. Despite the economic success of programs such as the Catskill/Delaware watershed management plan in the United States and the creation of global carbon exchanges, today's marketplace often fails to adequately protect biodiversity. We used a Marxist critique to explain one reason for this failure and to suggest a possible, if partial, response. Reframing ecosystem functions as economic services does not address the political problem of commodification. Just as it obscures the labor of human workers, commodification obscures the importance of the biota (ecosystem workers) and related abiotic factors that contribute to ecosystem functions. This erasure of work done by ecosystems impedes public understanding of biodiversity. Odum and Odum's radical suggestion to use the language of ecosystems (i.e., emergy or energy memory) to describe economies, rather than using the language of economics (i.e., services) to describe ecosystems, reverses this erasure of the ecosystem worker. Considering the current dominance of economic forces, however, implementing such solutions would require social changes similar in magnitude to those that occurred during the 1960s. Niklas Luhmann argues that such substantive, yet rapid, social change requires synergy among multiple societal function systems (i.e., economy, education, law, politics, religion, science), rather than reliance on a single social sphere, such as the economy. Explicitly presenting ecosystem services as discreet and incomplete aspects of ecosystem functions not only allows potential economic and environmental benefits associated with ecosystem services, but also enables the social and political changes required to ensure valuation of ecosystem functions and related biodiversity in ways beyond their measurement on an economic scale.

Finding Hope in the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment
Abstract:  Over the past quarter century, a new scientific activity has emerged: collective assessments by large numbers of scientists from different disciplines combining their expertise to better understand human interrelations with nature and to inform policy. The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment exceeded all such assessments before it in both the breadth of its coverage and the depth of its analysis of socioecological system dynamics. The findings are not encouraging. Nearly all ecosystems are being degraded and will continue to be degraded for decades to come even if policy changes are initiated now. For scientists participating in the assessment, the MA had another disconcerting aspect. It clearly shows that our fragmented, disciplinary knowledges cannot simply be combined to form an understanding of a whole complex system. Counterbalancing the despair of the findings and scientific difficulties of aggregating specialized knowledges, the MA demonstrated the potential of a deliberative democratic approach to grappling with complex problems .

Ecosystem Management and the Arrogance of Humanism
The ecosystem management paradigm has gained wide acceptance among land resource managers. The definition of ecosystem management remains fuzzy, however, and two fundamentally different views of ecosystem management prevail The first view is biocentric and considers human use of resources to be constrained by the primary goal of maintaining ecological integrity. The second view is anthropocentric and retains the importance of human use of resources, but it includes ecological and social considerations. In the 1981 book The Arrogance of Humanism , David Ehrenfeld examines the central tenets and assumptions of humanism. He provides several examples of human activities in which humanist assumptions are manifest and applies end-product analysis to these to demonstrate the arrogance and failure of humanist assumptions. In this essay, the anthropocentric view of ecosystem management (hereafter just ecosystem management) is discussed in the context of The Arrogance of Humanism , and it is shown that ecosystem management is ultimately humanistic. The underlying assumptions of ecosystem management are also discussed and are examined using end-product analysis. This analysis suggests that the belief in our ability to meet the assumptions of ecosystem management is unwarranted and that ecosystem management is yet another example of the arrogance of humanism. Solution of our land- and resource-management problems must begin with rejection of humanism's doctrine of final causes.

Biodiversity and Ecosystem Function
In at least some circumstances, biodiversity affects various ecosystem functions and the ways in which ecosystems respond to disturbance. Because these interactions occur at many spatial and temporal scales and throughout all levels of biological organization, it is difficult to decide where to focus attention on interactions between biodiversity and ecosystem function. The loci for initial attention is important for setting research priorities to understand these interactions further, for organizing known information to instruct the development of natural resource policies, and for identifying biodiversity conservation priorities. Holling (1992) argues that ecosystem behavior can be understood from a few dominating ecological processes that structure the ecosystem. In the temporal dimension, these key structuring processes dictate a few dominant temporal frequencies that drive other processes. Thus, the most effective strategy for studying interactions between biodiversity and ecosystem function is to focus on the key structuring processes at intermediate scales of space and time. Thereafter, other ecological conditions signify situations in which the interactions between biodiversity and ecosystem function are particularly strong: early to midsuccessional status, low soil fertility, intermediate levels of disturbance, biotic interactions only where there is collaborative indication of importance, invading species that differ significantly from native species in resource acquisition or utilization, and ecotones.
