The effect of ionizing radiation on the iron-linked protein (haemoglobin) of the marine lamellibranchs Anadara granosa (Linn.) and Cardita antiquata (Lam.) from Bombay waters, India is discussed. Purified haemoglobin solutions were exposed to a 60Cobalt source delivering a dose of about 4,600 rad/min, at the sample irradiation point. Radiation damage or degradation was measured spectrophometrically by studying changes in the absorption spectra following irradiation in the presence and absence of oxygen. Exposure to ionizing radiation in general caused a decrease in absorption of both haemoglobins, irrespective of location, viz extra-versus intracellular, at Soret (412 m), (540 to 42 m) and (574 to 76 m) peaks, and an increase in absorption at 510 and 630 m. Upon exposure to a higher dose, O2Hb of C. antiquata showed an increase in absorption at the protein peak (280 m); exposure to a lower dose, however, resulted in decreased absorption. Furthermore, the changes following irradiation were dependent upon the initial state of the pigment. Oxyhaemoglobin, when exposed to radiation, oxidized to hemiglobin, and hemiglobin reduced to oxyhaemoglobin. The extracellular haemoglobin of high molecular weight (3x106) of the false cockle C. antiquata was found to be extremely radio-resistant, whereas intracellular haemoglobin of low molecular weight (74,000) of the arcid clam A. granosa was highly radiosensitive, since it could not be exposed to doses exceeding 18,000 r.  相似文献

A highly specific recognition system, capable of distinguishing between allogeneic (non-clonemates) and syngeneic (clonemates) conspecifics, exists in Anemonia sulcata (Coelenterata: Anthozoa). During a competitive interaction between allogeneic individuals, specialized structures (acrorhagi) are exposed and used to sting opponents. This complex behavior is called the acrorhagial response. In order to quantify this behavior we measured the acrorhagial response time (period from first contact with opponent to full expansion of acrorhagi). More than 320 reciprocal histoincompatibility responses were recorded. These histoincompatibility (H) markers are free components of the sea anemone mucus: they were characterized as glyco-proteins of a molecular weight <18 KD (Kilo-Dalton) containing terminal -d-glucose and/or -d-mannose. In alloimmune memory testing experiments, the memory trace in A. sulcata was found to persist for 5 d.  相似文献

I investigated selective particle ingestion by oyster larvae (Crassostrea virginica) feeding on natural seston from Chesapeake Bay and laboratory-cultured algae of different sizes or chemical content. In 15 of 16 experiments with complex natural suspensions as food, small(<150 m) and large (>150 m) larvae selected most strongly for small (2 to 4 m) food particles, but in the presence of a large (>10 m)-cell dinoflagellate bloom, large larvae strongly selected much larger (22 to 30 m) food material (presumably dinoflagellates). When fed simplified mixtures of four cultured algal species (Synechococcus bacillaris, Isochrysis sp., Dunaliella tertiolecta, and Prorocentrum minimum) ranging in size from 1 to 11 m, small larvae preferred 1 m algae while large larvae preferred 11 m algae. In experiments with algal mixtures, and with suspensions of natural particles and added algae, large larvae preferred algal species harvested from exponential-phase cultures over other species from stationary-phase cultures. Larval ingestion rates of the cultured alga Thalassiosira pseudonana were about three times higher for cells with a low carbon:nitrogen ratio (7.2:1) than for high C:N ratio (16.2:1) cells when these cells were offered separately in suspensions of equal concentration. As a result, more algal cells, algal C, and algal N was ingested by larvae fed low C:N cells. However, larvae did not show a significant preference for either type of cell when they were offered in a 1:1 cell mixture. Feeding patterns of C. virginica larvae in natural food suspensions can vary with the composition of these complex suspensions, and ingestion seems dependent not only on the size, but on the growth rate and chemical quality of food particles.  相似文献

Summary We measured the distance dialects in the dance languages of three honey bee species in Thailand (Apis florea, A. cerana, and A. dorsata), and used these dialects to examine the hypothesis that a colony's dialect is adaptively tuned to enhance efficiency of communication over the distances that its foragers typically fly. in contrast to previous interspecific comparisons in Sri Lanka (Lindauer 1956; Punchihewa et al. 1985), we found no striking dialect differences among the Asian bees in Thailand. The adaptive tuning hypothesis predicts that the foraging ranges of the three species should also be similar, but comparisons of colonial foraging range using the forage mapping technique (Visscher and Seeley 1982) actually revealed marked differences. This raises the possibility that the link between ecology and distance code is more subtle than previously supposed, if a link exists at all. Offprint requests to: F.C. Dyer  相似文献

The possible modification of mercury toxicity by selenium in embryos of the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas and the larvae of the crab Cancer magister was investigated. Mercury concentration eliciting abnormal development in 50% of the oyster embryos (EC50) was 5.7 g l-1 (48 h) and mortality in 50% of the crab larvae (LC50) occurred with 6.6 g l-1 (96 h). The 48 h EC50 for selenium was greater than 10,000 g l-1 for oyster embryos and the 96 h LC50 for crab zoeae was 1040 g l-1. The response from each species, when exposed to both toxicants, revealed, that a high level of selenium (5,000 g l-1) increased mercury toxicity. Moderate selenium concentrations (10 to 1,000 g l-1) tended to decrease mercury toxicity, although no statistical verification could be made. The order of administration of toxicants had no effect on the response of Crassostrea gigas embryos. Early developmental stages (8 h) of C. gigas embryos were most sensitive to dissolved Hg; toxicant administration 24 h after fertilization resulted in no apparent abnormalities in development.  相似文献

Analyses of individual content of carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and hydrogen (H) were carried out for all larval stages of Pagurus bernhardus and Carcinus maenas, and for newly metamorphosed crabs. Maximum range in total larval development is 12.8 to 165.8 g C, 3.2 to 35.1 g N, and 1.9 to 24.9 g H in P. bernhardus and 3.1 to 43.2 g C, 0.7 to 10.1 g N, and 0.4 to 6.3 g H in C. maenas. From these data energy equivalents were calculated. Maximum range in total larval life is 0.43 to 6.38 J ind. -1 in P. bernhardus and 0.1 to 1.49 J ind. -1 in C. maenas. There is a 32.4% mean loss of energy in P. bernhardus megalopa development; this seems to describe the normal developmental pattern in this stage. Biomass was determined as fresh and dry weight respectively. Schizoporella unicornis floridana Osburn from Maryland and New Jersey, USA, produces two types of autozoids: (1) primogenial zoids, arranged in the brick-like quincunx pattern usual among cheilostomes; (2) adventitious, or frontally-budded zoids. Adventitious zoids are produced by expansion of the epitheca of primogenial or other adventitious zoids. The old aperture is sealed over and the hypostega becomes the body cavity of a new zoid. Vertical walls of adventitious zoids all contain an intercalary cuticle; basal walls are the frontal walls of zoids beneath. This sometimes results in trepostome-like zoid columns arising from the substrate; zoid columns may bifurcate in a way similar to zoid row-bifurcation in primogenial zoids. Adventitious zoids communicate with zoids at the same depth in the colony through annular septulae; they communicate with younger and older zoids through areolae. Adventitious zoids may sometimes give rise to primogenial subcolonies, which overgrow the colony surface. Frontal budding allows the development of massive nodules, which are of geological importance. These findings indicate that the hypostegal coelom is at least potentially a bud, and that genetic information necessary for producing an autozoid may be transferred from one building site to another. Photomicroscopy and scanning electron microscopy were used to determine the fine structure of the latero-frontal cirri on the gills of three species of bivalve mollusc: Mytilus edulis Linn., Barnea candida (Linn.), and Petricola pholadiformis Lam. The component cilia are seen to branch off alternately along the length of each cirrus. Each of these free, lateral lengths of the cilia are separated from the next on their side by a mean distance of 0.6 m. They extend to a mean length of 2.7 m in M. edulis, the species described in detail. It is shown that a complete straining mesh can be formed over the gill ostium during normal filtering and the aperture of this mesh correlates well with the previously recorded filtering efficiency for Mytilus.  相似文献

Patterns of phytoplankton carbon (C) metabolism were examined in å combined laboratory and field study to assess the influence of light conditions on 14C assimilation into photosynthetic end-products. Laboratory studies with three species representing distinct size classes and taxonomic groups tested the influence of low light on patterns of C flow. Prorocentrum mariae-lebouriae (dinoflagellate) and Ditylum brightwellii (diatom) showed decreased movement of photoassimilated 14C into protein following a shift to low light 14C assimilation into lipids and photosynthetic pigments increased in low light and was paralleled by increased chl a per cell. The proportion of 14C fixed into protein returned to the pre-shift level upon return to initial light conditions. Monochrysis lutheri (chrysophyte) did not show this pattern of reduced % 14C protein. Incubations of 12 and 24 h demonstrated significant rearrangements in labeling patterns at night, wherein 14C flow into protein in darkness was favored. % 14C protein at night was lower for M. lutheri than for the other species, suggesting some interspecific differences in the low light response. Measurements of 14C assimilation in phytoplankton assemblages from Chesapeake Bay demonstrated movement of a higher proportion of photo-assimilated C into protein in samples collected in the surface mixed layer than in those below the pycnocline. In comparison, phytoplankton collected below the pycnocline fixed a higher proportion of 14C into lipids, photosynthetic pigments, and low molecular weight metabolites, as was observed in low light laboratory cultures. A comparison of 12- and 24-h incubations for measuring patterns of C flow into photosynthetic end-products confirmed the inadequacy of short-term measurements, as significant changes in 14C allocation occurred in the dark phase of the photocycle. Together, these results suggest that 14C assimilation into photosynthetic end-products can be a useful measure of adaptive state in changing light conditions, but point out some difficulties in applying this approach in situ.  相似文献

During the course of its embryonic development, the Canadian lobster Homarus americanus Milne-Edwards exhibits steady increases in water content (56.2 to 86.8%) and ash (5.8 to 21.2%), and a progressive decrease in energy content from 6636 to 4292 cal/g dry weight. Mean dry weight of a single egg is 965 g, equivalent to 6.4 cal; a freshly hatched egg. The lobster hatches about 1,500 larvae per night over a period of 4 to 5 days. Dry weight, ash and calorific contents of larvae hatched on different days show considerable variations. After larvae hatch on the first day, continuous salt absorption by eggs to hatch on subsequent days leads to a steady increase in ash content from 143 g/larva hatched on the first day to 255 g/larva hatched on the fourth day, and consequently, to an increase in dry weight from 854 to 956 g/larva. Metabolism of embryos (0.1 cal/day), which are yet to be hatched on subsequent days, depletes the calorific content per unit weight (from 4637 to 3837 cal/g dry weight) as well as per larva (from 3.98 to 3.67 cal).Dedicated to my colleague K.-H. Brown and cherry colour morphs of the heteronemertean Lineus torquatus Coe, 1901 from the Vostok Bay of the Sea of Japan were compared using allele frequencies at 18 isozyme loci. These morphs shared no common alleles at 9 of the 18 loci. The observed genetic differences are strong evidence that the brown and cherry colour morphs, which occur sympatrically, are different species. Nei's genetic distance between these species (D=1.135) is considerably higher than typical D values for congeneric animal species. As with much previous work on nemerteans, intraspecific allozymic variability in both species was high, with mean expected heterozygosity values 0.286±0.049 and 0.159±0.051 for L. torquatus (brown) and L. torquatus (cherry) species, respectively.  相似文献

Volume regulation and salinity-preference tests have been made on Nitocra spinipes Boeck (Crustacea, Harpacticoidea). This species is often dominant in Baltic brackish-water rockpools. The investigation attempts to evaluate the relative importance of some of the different response mechanisms of this species to salinity changes in relation to the unstable environmental conditions of the rockpools. Volume-regulation experiments have shown that N. spinipes is capable of hypoosmotic and probably hyperosmotic regulation in the tested salinity range of 1 to 20 S. In laboratory cultures, reproduction, hatching and moulting oecurred in salinities ranging from 0.5 to 30 S. Preference experiments showed that N. spinipes has a very weak behavioural response even to very large variations in salinity concentrations between the alternative; a significant choice could only be found under conditions which never occur in the natural biotope. It is therefore concluded that, in a biotope such as the rockpool, where salinity changes will affect the whole biotope rather than produce microclimatic variation, regulation and adaptation must have a higher ecological importance than escape responses.  相似文献

Monthly samples were collected in oceanic waters off Discovery Bay, Jamaica, in 60- and 200-m vertical hauls, using 200- and 64-m mesh plankton nets, from June 1989 to July 1991. Sixty-nine species of copepods were identified: nauplii, copepodites and adults were separately enumerated. Total copepod abundances (all stages) ranged from 695 to 4120 m-3 in the upper 60 m, and from 483 to 3319 m-3 in the 200-m water column, without any clear seasonal pattern. With the exception of temperature, no seasonal variations in physico-chemical (chlorophyll a, S, particulate organic carbon, particulate protein) or biological variables were evident. Nauplii, adults and copepodites of selected taxa, and two chaetognath species, showed no significant variations in body length. Significant variantions in reproductive index were detected for several species, but without seasonal trends; many species appear to be continuous or intermittent breeders. There was no evidence of seasonal pattern in overall community composition or diversity, or evidence of changes due to water mass advection. The copepod community can be divided into a recurrent group of 13 (at 60 m) to 17 (at 200 m) perennial species, present year-round, and associated ephemeral groups of 1 to 3 species, present randomly for 1 to 4 consecutive months. The most plausible explanation of these patterns is that broad areas of the Caribbean Sea are dominated by the community of perennial species, while the ephemeral species represent the superimposed influence of local mesoscale gyres.  相似文献

The hemolymph of the blue crab Callinectes sapidus was hyperosmotic during 20-10-20 S and 30-10-30 S diurnal cycles. The hemolymph became isosmotic at 26 S and hyposmotic at 28 S in the 10-30-10 S diurnal cycle. Hemolymph Na+ was hyperionic to seawater throughout all cycles. Hemolymph Cl- was hyperionic below 24 S and either isionic or hypoionic from 24 to 30 S. Hemolymph K+ concentrations were hyperionic below 26 S and either isionic or hypoionic from 26 to 30 S. Hemolymph Mg++ values were hypoionic over the experimental salinity range (10 to 30). Hemolymph ninhydrin-positive substances (NPS) levels were directly related to ambient salinity.  相似文献

The oxygen-binding properties of haemocyanins (Hc) from three species of gammaridean amphipods, Gammarus locusta (L.) (subtidal), Echinogammarus pirloti (Sexton and Spooner), (intertidal, marine) and E. marinus (Leach) (intertidal, estuarine), one species of hyalid amphipod Hyale nilsonni Rathke (high intertidal, marine) and the talitrid amphipod Orchestia gammarellus (Pallas) (semi-terrestrial) have been studied. All the species were collected from the Firth of Clyde, Scotland, during the spring of 1992. The oxygen-carrying capacity of haemolymph from each species was low, although variable, and was correlated with the low concentration of Hc present. The Hc oxygen-affinity of native gammarid haemolymph was relatively high [partial pressure of oxygen required for half-saturation, P50=4 to 5 torr (0.53 to 0.67 kPa)] at their respective in vivo pH values. At equivalent pH, however, Hc from G. locusta displayed a lower O2-affinity than either Echinogammarus species. Gammarid Hcs had a large Bohr effect ( log P50/ pH=-1.16 to-1.47). Resuspended Hc isolated from whole H. nilsonni showed similar O2-binding properties to those of the gammaridean amphipods [P50=6.3 torr (1.44 kPa) at pH=8.0; log P50/pH=-1.20]. Comparable data for haemolymph from O. gammarellus showed that the Hc had a lower affinity for O2 [P50=14.1 torr (1.87 kPa) at in vivo pH] and exhibited a more moderate Bohr effect ( log P50/ pH=-0.79). To eliminate the possibility that these differences were due to the different haemolymph constituents, each of the Hcs were pelleted and resuspended in physiological saline. The differences noted above persisted, demonstrating that they were due to inherent O2-binding properties of the Hc molecules themselves. An increase in L-lactate resulted in an increase in Hc oxygen-affinity for both Echinogammarus species but not for O. gammarellus. This study has confirmed that there is a clear difference between Hcs from aquatic and semi-terrestrial amphipod genera. The results lend further support to the hypothesis that the move on to land by amphipod crustaceans is accompanied by a decrease in Hc oxygen-affinity, a decrease in the Bohr effect and a decrease in effector (in this case L-lactate) sensitivity.  相似文献

Summary. The purpose of this study was to identify plant volatiles that provide host location cues for adult females of the gall wasp Antistrophus rufus Gillette (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae). Larvae of this species inhabit flowering stems of the prairie perennial Silphium laciniatum L. (Asteraceae). Adult females responded to volatile compounds emitted by stems of S. laciniatum in field olfactometer bioassays. Plant volatiles were monoterpenes, including, in descending order of abundance, racemic - and -pinene (~50% + enantiomer for both), (+)-limonene, (–)-camphene, and -myrcene. In laboratory bioassays, females responded to aeration extracts of plant stems, the full blend of synthetic monoterpenes, and the four-component blend of -pinene, -pinene, (+)-limonene, and (–)-camphene. This monoterpene blend apparently serves as an olfactory cue for host plant location for female A. rufus and is the first such cue to be reported for a cynipid gall wasp. Species-specific ratios of plant monoterpenes may provide cues for gall wasp females to distinguish between plant species and choose appropriate hosts for oviposition. The olfactometer and bioassay techniques developed for this research may be useful for field bioassays of other types of minute arthropods.  相似文献

Balanus balanoides (L.) collected from an area with high heavy-metal run-off contained two different types of granule within the parenchyma cells of the prosoma. X-ray microprobe analysis shows one to be the familiar zinc granule made up of concentric layers and giving major peaks for phosphorus and zinc, and the other to be homogeneous and giving peaks for sulphur and copper. This latter granule is designated the copper granule. Whilst zinc granules are known to be composed of inorganic phosphate, various tests on copper granules in sections and in a granule-rich pellet have shown that the copper is probably complexed with organic matter. The tests also demonstrated the relatively, insoluble (inert) nature of these granules. Although zinc and copper granules were present together in the prosoma, atomic absorption analyses of whole bodies (prosoma+thorax) have shown the level of zinc (50.28 g/mg dry weight) to be much higher than that of copper (3.75 g/mg dry weight).  相似文献

The separate and combined effects of ammonium (10M) and phosphate (2M) on the ultrastructure of zooxanthellae (Symbiodinium sp.) from giant clams, Tridacna maxima, were examined in the field. Nitrogen addition significantly changed the ultrastructure of the zooxanthellae inhabiting the clams. After 9 mo exposure, the cross-sectional area of zooxanthellae from N-treated clams was significantly lower than that from other treatments [N=39.3 m2; C=47.9 m2; P=43.2m2; N+P=44.5 m2; (P=0.001)]. There was also a significant decrease in the size of starch bodies, especially around the pyrenoid of the zooxanthellae from N and N+P treatments [N=1.2 m2; C=2.0 m2; P=1.8 m2; N+P=1.2 m2; (P=2.08E-11)]. This presumably occurs as a result of the mobilization of organic carbon stores in response to stimulated amino acid synthesis under enriched nutrient conditions. These data strongly suggest that the symbiotic zooxanthellae of clams are limited to some extent by the availability of inorganic nitrogen, and that relatively minor changes to the nutrient loading of the water column can have substantial effects on the biochemistry of symbioses such as that which exists between clams and zooxanthellae.  相似文献

The mechanism of bacterial-derived bioluminescence in the apogonid species Siphamia permutata and S. cephalotes presents some special structures, particularly the existence of two sites harboring bioluminescent bacteria, and not only one as previously described. One site, is the familiar disc-like, bacteria-harboring gland and paired ventral bioluminescent reflectors, typical for this genus, that merge and end at the level of the hypobranchial region. The second and more anteriorly situated site of luminescence features two sacs that originate in the gular region and protrude into the oral cavity, via the free space left by the laterally notched tongue. The apical parts of these luminous sacs harbor the bacteria whose light diffuses within the oral cavity. The tongue surface in the studied species is unique in character among the cardinal fishes, being criss-crossed anteriorly by protruding dermal ridges, rich in taste buds and mucus-producing cells. It would appear that at night when feeding, the luminous mouth cavity of these fish acts as a lure to attract the small prey, while the ridged structure of the tongues surface facilitates their collection and aggregation before they are swallowed.Communicated by O.
