The sizes at which female and male western rock lobster Panulirus cygnus become mature were examined over 32 years from records at six localities along the coast of Western Australia. The size of males at maturity was estimated from a subset of these data by a morphometric and a physiological method, with both producing statistically similar results. Males were larger at first maturity than females at the same sites. For both sexes, the sizes at first maturity at each location correlated (P<0.05) with the mean annual water temperature at that location, decreasing from south to north along the mainland coast and being smallest at the offshore Abrolhos Islands. Smaller sizes at maturity were recorded for both sexes than have been published previously. One certain explanation for these differences is that management measures protecting females with ovigerous setae have distorted size compositions and the ratio of immature to mature females, thereby increasing the likelihood of capturing small mature females. However, these fishing effects cannot fully account for the progressive decline in CL50 observed over the past 20 years. Other possible hypotheses considered include increases in water temperature over this period, as well as whether this change could be consistent with a genotypic response caused by the selective removal of large lobsters combined with high exploitation rates.  相似文献

High intertidal community organization on a rocky headland in Maine,USA   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
A mosaic patchwork of the barnacle Balanus balanoides L., the mussel Mytilus edulis L., and the alga Fucus vesiculosus L. was found in the transitional region between the mid and high intertidal zones on a rocky headland on Mount Desert Island, Maine, USA. The development of the mosaic was observed by following recruitment and survival of B. balanoides in denuded patches located at the same tidal level along a 60 m stretch of shore. Barnacle recruitment was least under canopies of F. vesiculosus and greatest in open areas kept moist at low tide by surf. Barnacle survival after settlement was least under the F. vesiculosus canopy due to the whiplash effect of the algal fronds in the surf and greatest in open areas free from competition from mussels. In open areas, early mortality was correlated with settlement density. In areas of dense settlement (60 spat cm-2) up to 90% mortality resulted within 5 months from crowding associated with growth. In older individuals crowding produced hummocks of elongated, weakly attached barnacles which were more prone to removal by surf than uncrowded barnacles. Mussels exerted competitive dominance over barnacles for space and the presence of mussel beds prevented further barnacle recruitment. Mussels suffered extensive mortality during winter storms when surf removed dense mats of weakly attached mussels. The patchy distribution of mussels and barnacles results from irregular rock substrata producing numerous environmental patches with respect to wave exposure and drainage at low tide, and from densitydependent mortality of both mussels and barnacles which creates patches of new colonizable space within each environmental patch.  相似文献

Nearshore fish faunas from 32 sites along 1500 km coastline of temperate south-western Australia were sampled by seine net between 1991 and 1992 to examine the species composition in sandy surf zones along this region, and to determine whether it is influenced by adjacent nearshore habitats and the warm southward flowing Leeuwin Current. Although the ichthyofauna was diverse, with 95 species from 47 families recorded, it was numerically dominated by only a few species. Species of Atherinidae, Mugilidae, Tetraodontidae, Clupeidae and Pomatomidae, such as Atherinomorus ogilbyi, Leptatherina presbyteroides, Mugil cephalus, Aldrichetta forsteri, Torquigener pleurogramma, Hyperlophus vittatus, Spratelloides robustus and Pomatomus saltatrix, were often common to these surf zones. When the species composition of the surf zones was compared with that found in adjacent nearshore habitats, 38 and 42% of the species were shared with reefs and seagrass beds, respectively, and 22% were present in all three habitats. Classification and ordination demonstrated that the faunal composition on the west coast was distinct from that on the south coast, and within each of these regions there were discrete assemblages. There was a marked decline in the number of species on the south coast, with 20 to 66 species reported from the six west-coast assemblages and 11 to 16 species collected from the four south-coast assemblages. A high proportion of resident species was found in the surf zones on both coasts; however, there was a smaller contribution of transient species on the south coast than on the west coast. This decline in transient species was associated with the absence of tropical species on the latter coast. Benthic invertevores were dominant on both coasts, while trophic diversity decreased and the proportion of zooplanktivores increased on the south coast. These differences in the characteristics of the fish fauna between the two coasts can be related to the presence of seagrass beds and limestone patch reef adjacent to sandy surf-zone areas on the west coast which provide more microhabitats for fish. The presence of inshore limestone reefs along the west coast moderates wave energy, producing more sheltered and temporally stable surf zones. The lower number of species on the south coast can also be attributed to the reduced influence of the Leeuwin Current. This southward flowing current acts as a mechanism for the dispersal of tropical species which display no regular association with the surf zones on the lower west coast.  相似文献

Kelp gulls (Larus dominicanus) feed on pieces of skin and blubber they rip from Southern right whales’ (Eubalaena australis) backs in their breeding areas at Península Valdés, Argentina, producing injuries. This behavior has increased since the first record in 1972, and some authors have suggested that constant gull harassment could have a negative effect on right whale population. The main goal of this study is to assess the variables that most affect the gull attacks. We analyzed 5359 whale-watching sightings made during trips from Puerto Pirámides (42o34′S, 64o16′W) along the whale breeding seasons (June–December) 2005 to 2007. The most important factors affecting the attacks include the presence of a mother–calf pair, the time within the season, the distance to the coast and the wind velocity. There is also concern of possible transmission of infectious diseases in the attacks since increasing number of whales with different patterns of skin lesions have been observed.  相似文献

A mutualism exists between the xanthid crabs of the genusTrapezia and their host corals,Pocillopora damicornis. It has previously been established that these obligate coral residents benefit the coral hosts by defending them against echinoderm predators and by increasing the survival of polyps located deep between the coral branches. In turn, the corals apparently benefit the crabs by producing lipid-filled structures on which the trapezid crabs feed; these fat bodies may contain some of the lipid which in previous studies of coral metabolism has been termed excess. It was determined by experiments conducted at the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology that the presence of crabs in colonies ofP. damicornis stimulates the polyps to produce the lipid-filled fat bodies; removal of crabs causes corals to cease producing fat bodies. A structure very similar to the fat bodies ofP. damicornis has been reported inAcropora durvillei. Both of these coral genera ordinarily possess xanthid-crab mutualists. This association between branching corals and crustaceans may have evolved because corals of these genera provide shelter among their branches and because these shallow-water corals are evidently capable of releasing lipid which is excess to the corals' metabolic needs, but which can be utilized by the crabs.  相似文献

Group foraging allows the co-existence of a strategy (producer) that involves searching for food, and its alternative (scrounger) exploiting the food of the producer. The use of producer and scrounger strategies has been modelled as an alternative-option scramble which assumes strong negative frequency-dependence of the scrounger's pay-offs. We tested this assumption in a flock feeding situation by manipulating the proportion of scroungers in flocks of spice finches, Lonchura punctulata. In a first experiment we found that: (1) the food intake of scroungers, and to a lesser extent producers, was negatively affected by an increase in the proportion of scroungers; (2) the food intake of producers and scroungers was equal when the proportion of scroungers was small, suggesting that producers, who exploited 35.4% of their patches by scrounging were opportunistically adjusting their use of the strategies until the pay-offs equalized. In a second experiment we tested whether finches could vary their use of the two strategies in response to changes in foraging conditions brought about by an increase in the cost of producing. As predicted by the game, finches reduced their use of the producer strategy and increased their use of the scrounger strategy when the cost of producing increased. These results suggest that spice finches can alter their allocation to each foraging alternative by experience and that the producer-scrounger game is a realistic model for predicting group foraging decisions. In order to investigate how episodes of geological and climatic change have influenced the distribution and evolutionary diversification of Arctic to cold temperate-North Atlantic seaweed species, intraspecific genetic variation was analyzed among isolates of the sublittoral, benthic red alga Phycodrys rubens (collected between June 1992 and January 1994). Rooted phylogenetic analyses of nuclear ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences and the plastid encoded Rubisco spacer sequences suggest that P. rubens invaded the North Atlantic from the Pacific shortly after the opening of the Bering Strait (3 to 3.5 million years ago), colonizing both the western and eastern Atlantic coasts. Based on these data we further hypothesize that P. rubens survived along the European coasts during the more recent Pleistocene glaciations, while becoming locally extinct along the North American Atlantic coasts. Following retraction of the last ice sheet, the western Atlantic coast was colonized a second time from the Pacific. The presence of two distinct genetic types (based on ITS and Rubisco sequences) along the European coasts is postulated to be a result of isolation and subsequent differentiation. This is likely because ice-free areas are known to have existed in northern Scotland and Norway during the last glaciation. The presence of an East Atlantic genetic type along the West Atlantic coast is believed to be a recent introduction (caused by human activity) of P. rubens to Newfoundland.  相似文献

Nine intertidal stations within the Port of Long Beach, California, USA, were sampled during September and October 1975 using the random point method and the scraping technique. A total of 96,168 individuals belonging to 55 taxa were recorded in the quantitative survey; qualitative scrapings included 136 taxa. The protected outer coast intertidal assemblages were found at all but three stations along the shoreline. The shoreline, being situated in between the more environmentally stressed inner harbor and the less stressed open ocean, supported assemblages characterized by an instability in species composition. The upper midlittoral zone was typically dominated by Chthamalus dalli, C. fissus and Balanus glandula. The lower midlittoral was colonized either by Anthopleura elegantissima-Prionotis lanceolata facies along the outer breakwater or by A. elegantissima-Tetraclita squamosa rubescens facies along the inner breakwater. The mussel bed, which is the characteristic assemblage of the Californian lower midlittoral zone was obscured by the competitors P. lanceolata, T. squamosa rubescens and A. elegantissima, and was thinned out by predators, of which Pisaster ochraceus was the most voracious. Suspension feeders were dominant in the upper midlittoral and producers and grazers in the lower midlittoral. Predators were few in number and restricted to levels below mean lower low water. There was a gradual increase in numbers of intertidal species and individual abundance from level +5 ft (1.5 m) to level +1 ft (0.3 m) and from shoreline to outer breakwater. This may be attributable to the decrease in environmental stresses in the lower water levels and the improvement in water quality from the inner to outer harbor area.  相似文献

Summary Chemical components of the cephalic labial gland secretion, which most likely is used as a precopulatory attracting signal, were identified in males of the cuckoo bumblebeesPsithyrus vestalis (Geoffroy) andP. bohemicus (Seidl.) by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The former species has geranylcitronellyl acetate as main component, plus in decreasing amounts geranylcitronellol, an eicosadienal, an eicosenol, and an eicosenal. Another 17 fatty acid derivatives are present in minor amounts. The labial secretion ofP. vestalis differs distinctly in its chemistry from that of all of the 8 other ScandinavianPsithyrus species. In the taxonomically closely related (same subgenus)P. bohemicus, the labial gland secretion contains 16 fatty acid derivatives, of which 12 (75%) are present also in the secretion ofP. vestalis. Thus, both the labial gland secretions, and morphological traits lend support to the hypothesis that the two species share a common ancestor. The reproductive isolation between them is, at least in part, supported by the inclusion of a second biosynthetical pathway (the mevalonic acid pathway producing terpenoids) inP. vestalis, in addition to the pathway common to both species (the polyketide pathway producing fatty acid derivatives).  相似文献

Variations at 22 enzyme coding loci were surveyed in 11 populations of the oyster Ostrea edulis L., which were sampled between 1988 and 1990 along the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts of Europe. Atlantic oyster beds suffered a steady decline during the last century, and restocking of beds with oysters of foreign origin has probably resulted in a high degree of interbreeding of natural oyster stocks from all Atlantic Europe. Our study confirms the low levels of genetic variability previously reported for the oyster populations from the Atlantic coasts, and extends it to the Mediterranean coasts. The locus arginine-kinase (ARK *) exhibited a high degree of interpopulation differentiation (F ST=0.289), resulting from extensive variation in gene frequencies along a geographical cline. However, the overall genetic differentiation between populations was slight, and similar to that reported for other local populations of bivalves (mean genetic distance between populations is 0.010, mean F ST=0.062). A general pattern of increasing differentiation along the coastline in an Atlantic-mediterranean direction emerged; but genetic differentiation among the Atlantic populations was not significantly lower than that observed among the Mediterranean populations. This and other results suggest that the effects of extensive transplantation of oysters among various areas in Europe are detectable only in some particular localities. The geographical distribution of low-frequency alleles suggests a restriction to gene flow outwards from the Mediterranean Sea, across the Straits of Gibraltar.  相似文献

In several species of ants, queens often form temporary cooperative associations during colony foundation. These associations end soon after the eclosion of the first workers with the death or expulsion of all but one of the queens. This study examined competition between foundress queens of the fire ant Solenopsis invicta. Although attacks by the workers contributed to queen mortality, queens gained no advantage by producing more workers than their co-foundresses. Restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis of mitochondrial DNA showed that the queen producing more workers during colony founding was no more likely to survive than the less productive queen. In experimentally manipulated colonies in which all the workers were daughters of only one of the queens, the mother of the workers was no more likely to survive than the unrelated queen. Queens producing diploid males reared fewer offspring but were as likely to survive as queens producing only workers. These results suggest that workers do not discriminate between related and unrelated queens within colonies. Aggressive encounters between queens were common. Queens were more likely to die or be expelled if paired with heavier queens or if they lost more weight than their co-foundress during the claustral period. Finally, when queens were separated by screens through which workers could pass, the workers usually attacked and killed the queen farther from the brood. These results suggest that queen survival is promoted by a high fighting ability relative to co-foundresses, rather than by increased worker production, and that workers respond to queen differences that are independent of kinship. Phyllorhiza punctata, commonly called the Australian white spotted jellyfish, invaded the Caribbean in the 1960s, becoming established there and subsequently in the United States in the northern Gulf of Mexico (by 2000) and eastern Florida (2001). With the prevailing Loop Current flowing clockwise around the Gulf of Mexico and joining the Gulf Stream along eastern Florida, potential transport of P. punctata along the eastern seaboard of the USA could be facilitated. P. punctata medusae were collected in small numbers along the entire Georgia coast during May–November in 2007 and 2008. Medusa bell diameters increased both years from ca. 10 cm in May to ca. 33 cm in autumn. Specimens lacked zooxanthellae, as reported for medusae in the northern Gulf of Mexico and Florida. It is possible that the P. punctata medusae observed were transported from established populations to the south; however, whether or not this species is established along the Georgia coast has yet to be determined.  相似文献

Like female dog whelks (Nucella lapillus) in the Atlantic Ocean, females of the Pacific gastropod N. lima respond to low concentrations of tri-n-butyltin (TBT) by growing a penis and vas deferens. This condition, termed imposex, was found to occur in N. lima collected from August 1987 to May 1988 along a TBT pollution gradient associated with a marina in Auke Bay, Alaska. The suite of symptoms characteristic of imposex in N. lima was slightly different than in N. lapillus. Imposex, as measured by relative penis size (RPS) of females to males, increased from 0.0 to 34.27 along this gradient and as measured by vas deferens sequenceindex (VDS) increased similarly from 0.0 to 4.29. Concentrations of TBT in N. lima increased from below detection limits (about 0.010 g Sn g-1 dry tissue wt) to 0.065 g Sn g-1 dry tissue wt along the gradient. The gradient was determined by measuring TBT in whole-body tissues of bay mussels (Mytilus edulis). Concentrations of TBT in mussels increased from below detection limits to 0.833 g Sn g-1 dry tissue wt in mussels from within the marina that was the major local source of TBT. Imposex, tissue TBT burden, and position along a TBT pollution gradient are significantly correlated (P<0.01) in N. lima. TBT was tested as a causative agent for imposex by exposing snails at a distant control site to TBT paint. After 1 mo exposure, 33% of the females grew a penis ranging in size from 0.2 to 0.8 mm. Our results generally corroborate those found for N. lapillus and indicate that imposex in N. lima is caused by environmental TBT exposure. We suggest that the RPS in the genus Nucella may be useful in monitoring TBT in coastal waters worldwide.  相似文献

The results of four experiments on acidification effects upon the Enchytraeid worm populations of ombrotrophic peats are reported. in the first, populations were measured in peats from Calluna vulgaris-dominated microcosms collected from along a gradient in N deposition in the UK and subjected for 18 months to simulated precipitation with a solute composition appropriate for their site of collection. There was a significant decline in Enchytraeid population along the N deposition gradient for Calluna-dominant microcosms, but when grasses took over from the Calluna, Enchytraeid numbers increased significantly. in the second experiment, two sets of peat moorland microcosms from a single site, supporting Calluna and Calluna-grass mixed vegetation, were subjected for 12 months to ambient and 2- and 6-times the ambient N deposition. Additional N was added in two forms, as ammonium sulphate and as nitric acid. the high N treatments significantly reduced the Enchytraeid populations for both vegetation types. in a third experiment, the pH preference for the Enchytraeids was assessed using interconnected tubes of peat covering the pH range 2.2–8.7. the preferred pH range after 8 months was 2.7–3.7. in the final experiment, it was found that recolonization with Enchytraeids after initial removal was more rapid under grass dominant vegetation than under Calluna dominant vegetation.  相似文献

In high-latitude waters such as the Southern Ocean, the primary production of phytoplankton supports the ecosystem. To understand the photo-acclimation strategy of such phytoplankton within cold environments, the vertical distribution profile of photosynthetic pigments was analyzed in the Southern Ocean. Samples were taken along 110°E during the austral summer, and along 150°E and around the edge of the seasonal sea ice of the Antarctic Continent during the austral autumn. Pigment extraction methods were optimized for these samples. The standing crop of chlorophyll a was larger in the region along the edge of the seasonal sea ice than at sampling stations in open ocean areas. Chlorophyll concentration seemed to be dependent on the formation of thermo- and haloclines along the edge of the seasonal sea ice, but not in the open ocean where such clines are less pronounced. The marker pigments fucoxanthin and/or 19′-hexanoyloxyfucoxanthin were dominant at most sampling stations throughout the water column, while other marker pigments such as alloxanthin were quite low. This indicated that diatoms and/or haptophytes were the major phytoplankton in this area. Comparison of the relative ratio of fucoxanthin with that of 19′-hexanoyloxyfucoxanthin allowed some stations to be characterized as either diatom-dominant or haptophyte-dominant. The relative ratio of xanthophyll-cycle pigments (diadinoxanthin plus diatoxanthin) to chlorophyll a was high in surface waters and decreased gradually with depth. This suggests that near the ice edge during summer in the Southern Ocean, both diatoms and haptophytes acclimate to their light environments to protect their photosystems under high-light conditions.  相似文献

The composition of phytoplankton and the general distribution patterns of the major taxonomic groups are discussed for the eastern coastal waters of the USA. A species list of 609 phytoplankters is given with dominant cold- and warm-water forms noted along the coast. The ubiquitous species along the east coast were Skeletonema costatum, Thalassionema nitzschioides, and Coccolithus huxleyi.  相似文献

Summary Two forms of the fire ant, Solenopsis invicta, occur in North America; the monogyne form has colonies with a single functional queen while the polygyne form has colonies containing many functional queens. Field surveys indicate that diploid males are common in natural populations of the polygyne form but absent from monogyne populations, in contrast to laboratory data showing that similar frequencies of queens producing such males occur in the two types of populations. Our results show that mature monogyne colonies with adopted queens rear diploid males in the laboratory, so it is unlikely that the absence of these males from monogyne colonies in the field is due to discrimination against them by monogyne workers. On the other hand, incipient monogyne colonies that produce diploid males exhibit significantly higher mortality and significantly slower rates of growth (Figs. 1–3) than colonies producing workers only. These results suggest that the observed distribution of male diploidy in S. invicta can be explained by differential mortality of diploid male producing colonies of the two forms, with such colonies of the monogyne form experiencing 100% mortality early in development. The mortality differences due to this factor are shown to be related to the different social structures and modes of colony founding characterizing the two forms.  相似文献

The distribution of three talitrid species—Talitrus saltator (Montagu, 1808), Orchestia gammarella (Pallas, 1766), Platorchestia platensis (Kroyer, 1845)—in the beach-dune system at the mouth of the Mignone River (central Italy) was analysed. It was related to the variations of the following abiotic factors: temperature, penetrability, pH, conductivity and moisture of the sediment. The beach-dune system is influenced by human impact and natural erosion. All species showed a maximum capture frequency in November, while the abundance decreased to a minimum in July. T. saltator was dominant on the beach, the other two along the riverbank. Juveniles were abundant along the riverbank; they were most abundant in November and almost disappeared in summer. T. saltator was more abundant near the waterline during the hottest months and occupied the inner beach in winter, with occasional presences on the dune. Regression analysis between the abiotic factors and species abundance showed a positive relationship with pH and temperature for T. saltator, while O. gammarella was negatively related to pH. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) showed that penetrability, moisture and temperature had the greatest influence on the species. T. saltator was almost entirely confined to the beach transects and strongly associated with penetrability, temperature and pH values. O. gammarella was mostly associated with the riverbank and P. platensis only found there and on a nearby pool. The two species were mainly influenced by moisture and variations in grain sizes of the sediment.  相似文献

Migrating feeding aggregations (or fronts) of sea urchins can dramatically alter subtidal seascapes by destructively grazing macrophytes. While direct effects of urchin fronts on macrophytes (particularly kelps) are well documented, indirect effects on associated fauna are largely unknown. Secondary aggregations of predators and scavengers form around fronts of Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis in Nova Scotia. We recorded mean densities of the sea stars Asterias spp. (mainly A. rubens) and Henricia sanguinolenta of up to 11.6 and 1.7 individuals 0.25 m−2 along an urchin front over 1 year. For Asterias, mean density at the front was 7 and 15 times greater than in the kelp bed and adjacent barrens, respectively. There was strong concordance between locations of peak density of urchins and sea stars (Asterias r = 0.98; H. sanguinolenta r = 0.97) along transects across the kelp–barrens interface, indicating that sea star aggregations migrated along with the urchin front at rates of up to 2.5 m per month. Size–frequency distributions suggest that Asterias at the front were drawn from both the barrens (smaller individuals) and the kelp bed (larger individuals). These sea stars fed intensively on mussels on kelp holdfasts and in adjacent patches. Urchin grazing may precipitate aggregations of sea stars and other predators or scavengers by incidentally consuming or damaging mussels and other small invertebrates, and thereby releasing a strong odor cue. Consumption of protective holdfasts and turf algae by urchins could facilitate feeding by these consumers, which may obtain a substantial energy subsidy during destructive grazing events.  相似文献

Egg production ofAcartia clausi andCentropages hamatus was measured along 6 transects in the Skagerrak every third day from 26 May to 20 June 1990. Egg production was highest in the shallow waters north of Denmark, with occasional peaks in frontal regions along the Swedish and the Danish west coasts. Linear regression analysis showed that the egg production was significantly (p<0.05) related to chlorophylla measured either as average surface concentration or integrated over the whole water column. When analysing each transect or each time period separately, the surface chlorophyll generally was a better predictor of egg production than the depth-integrated chlorophyll. Regressions improved when analysing the whole area for a short period of time rather than analysing a single transect for a month. The data suggest that the Skagerrak planktonic system functions more similarly over the whole area in a short period of time than over a month in a restricted area. Mixingwithin the system in frontal regions or in connection with eddies is more important for the secondary production thantransport to it by the Baltic Current or the Jutland Current.SKAGEX Contribution No. 4  相似文献
