Summary. Ammi majus seeds are known to have a strong allelopathic effect due to coumarins. The coumarins were identified and shown to be present in the seed epicuticular waxes. An analysis of economic and social factors affecting the quantity and composition of household solid wastes is reported in this paper. The weekly per capita and per household quantities of eleven selected household solid waste components are analyzed using regression equations. Household income, household size, and the age structure of the population are the major variables affecting the quantities of these components. The results indicate that if all glass, metals, plastics, newspaper, other paper, and textiles were recovered, then about 53% by weight of the summer household solid waste load would be usable resources.  相似文献

Leaching of granular solids can be described in terms of specific mass transfer functions of a simple mathematical form.

The parameters can be determined by column leaching experiments under well known flow conditions.

Initially available concentrations are obtained from batch experiments at high dilution. Total concentrations in the solids are determined independently to calculate the available fractions.

The determination of the flow pattern is done by radiotracer measurements. Leachates are analyzed by various analytical methods including AAS and INAA. Total concentrations in the solids are determined by INAA preferably.  相似文献

A nearly 5-year anaerobic incubation experiment was conducted to observe the geochemical evolution of an acidic mine waste. Long-term storage of the mine waste under strict anaerobic conditions caused marked increase in aqueous sulfur, while aqueous iron showed no remarkable change. Co-existing oxidation and reduction of elemental sulfur appeared to play a central role in controlling the evolutionary trends of aqueous sulfur and iron. Addition of organic matter increased the aqueous Fe concentration, possibly due to enhanced iron mobilization by microbial iron reduction and increased iron solubility by forming organically complexed Fe species. Further addition of CaCO3 resulted in immobilization of aqueous iron and sulfur due to elevated pH and gypsum formation. The chemical behaviors of environmentally significant metals were markedly affected by the added organic matter; Al, Cr, Cu, Ni and Zn tended to be immobilized probably due to elevated pH and complexation with insoluble organic molecules, while As and Pb tended to be mobilized. Jarosite exhibited high stability after nearly 5 years of anaerobic incubation and even under circumneutral pH conditions. Long-term weathering of aluminosilicate through acid attack raised pH, while continuous reaction between the added CaCO3 and mine waste-borne stored acid decreased pH.  相似文献

Few people have so far explored into the research of the dynamics of various nitrogenous compounds (including water-soluble nitrogen) in composting of food wastes. This study aimed to investigate the solid-phase nitrogen, water-soluble nitrogen, nitrogen loss together with ammonia volatilization in the process of food wastes composting. A laboratory scale static aerobic reactor in the experiment was employed in the composting process of a synthetic food waste, in which sawdust was used as the litter amendment. In the experiment, oxygen was supplied by continuous forced ventilation for 15 days. The results have shown that the concentrations of total nitrogen and organic nitrogen decrease significantly in the composting process, whereas NH4 +-N concentration increases together with little fluctuation in NO3 ?-N. After composting, the total content of the water-soluble nitrogen compounds in the compost greatly increased, the total nitrogen loss amounted to 50% of the initial nitrogen, mainly attributed to ammonia volatilization. 56.7% of the total ammonia volatilization occurred in the middle and late composting of the thermophilic stage. This suggested that the control at the middle and late composting of thermophilic stage is the key to nitrogen loss in the food waste compost.  相似文献

Cement industry is an interesting way to eliminate combustible wastes. Thermal valorization is maximal, conditions of combustion are especially favorable to the destruction and the trapping of pollutants, and there are neither ultimate residues (slag) nor aqueous rejects. Moreover the properties of the cement are not modified. Nevertheless the increased use of substitution fuel may lead to deal with unusual amounts of heavy metals. Tests were realized on several rotary cement kilns with varying substitution ratios of fossil fuels by wastes. Mass balances were fitted over the whole plant, and emission factors were explained.  相似文献

Although most long-term studies of consumer-resource (e.g., predator-prey) interactions select species showing cyclic population dynamics, strong consumer-resource interactions can also produce irregular, noncyclic dynamics. Here, we present a case in which a seed predator, the tephritid fruit fly Euphranta connexa, shows fluctuations in density of more than two orders of magnitude over a 22-year period. To explain these fluctuations, we analyzed a stage-specific data set to quantify the density-dependent and density-independent components of larval survivorship and realized fecundity. Both larval survivorship and realized fecundity were strongly density dependent. Larval survivorship dropped from 0.62 at low larval density to 0.081 at high larval density, whereas fecundity dropped from 84.3 to 0.32 eggs per individual, more than a 100-fold decrease. We divided density-independent variation in E. connexa population dynamics into components for variability in (1) larval survivorship, (2) realized fecundity, and (3) annual fruit abundance. Of these components, 96% of the density-independent variance in per capita population growth rates was caused by fluctuations in fruit abundance. This highlights the importance of the strong consumer-resource interactions in driving fluctuations in E. connexa abundance. It also demonstrates that E. connexa dynamics are remarkably simple, and aside from the 4% of unexplained variance in per capita population growth rates, our understanding of E. connexa dynamics is remarkably complete.  相似文献

The recent trend to place monetary values on ecosystem services has led to studies on the economic importance of pollinators for agricultural crops. Several recent studies indicate regional, long-term pollinator declines, and economic consequences have been derived from declining pollination efficiencies. However, use of pollinator services as economic incentives for conservation must consider environmental factors such as drought, pests, and diseases, which can also limit yields. Moreover, "flower excess" is a well-known reproductive strategy of plants as insurance against unpredictable, external factors that limit reproduction. With three case studies on the importance of pollination levels for amounts of harvested fruits of three tropical crops (passion fruit in Brazil, coffee in Ecuador, and cacao in Indonesia) we illustrate how reproductive strategies and environmental stress can obscure initial benefits from improved pollination. By interpreting these results with findings from evolutionary sciences, agronomy, and studies on wild-plant populations, we argue that studies on economic benefits from pollinators should include the total of ecosystem processes that (1) lead to successful pollination and (2) mobilize nutrients and improve plant quality to the extent that crop yields indeed benefit from enhanced pollinator services. Conservation incentives that use quantifications of nature's services to human welfare will benefit from approaches at the ecosystem level that take into account the broad spectrum of biological processes that limit or deliver the service.  相似文献

The use of mineral and mineral-related wastes in road construction in Britain is reviewed. Only iron and steel slags have potential for use in road pavement layers and most wastes require modification before being suitable for sub-base construction. The principal outlet for wastes is as substitutes for bulk fill and the advantages and disadvantages of this use are considered. 将经湿解工艺处理后的园林废物与土壤按1:3、1:5和1:10(湿质量)3种比例均匀混合作为实验物料,同时以自然土壤作为参照,研究了在田间条件下,不同浓度的湿解产物在土壤中的物质变化以及腐熟度。结果表明:在培养期间,3种比例混合物料的温度均接近于土壤对照样的温度,稍低于环境温度;pH值均略呈碱性,并随土壤浓度的增加而接近土壤对照样的pH值;ω(C)/ω(N)比、ω(水溶性有机碳WSC)/ω(有机态氮Norg)和ω(NH4^+-N)/ω(NO3^--N)均随培养时间的增加而下降,而阳离子交换最(CEC)和CEC/ω(全C)恰好相反,并随湿解产物浓度的增加而增加,14d后,这些指标均接近土壤对照样的参数,实验结束时,均达腐熟。3种比例混合物料的种子发芽系数均大于80%,湿解产物浓度对种子发芽系数无明显抑制作用,湿解后的产物可直接安全应用于土壤中。  相似文献

Several experiments were made in 1982 and 1983 to evaluate the effects of acid-iron waste from a French titanium-dioxide plant on marine fauna. Experiments were carried out in the plume area of the Seine Estuary, France, and in the laboratory to determine the effects of pH on mortality rates. Field results revealed no effect of short-term exposure (10s) to pH 3 and the laboratory bioassays failed to reveal any deleterious effects on phytoor zooplankton of exposure to pH 3 for 30 or 90 s.  相似文献

Metalliferous substrates are important in the distribution of various plants such asArmeria maritima, Minuartia verna, Thlaspi alpestre, Silene maritima andCochlearia officinalis, in parts of the United Kingdom. Metalliferous substrates are similarly important for a slightly different assemblage of metallophytes in the Aachen-Liège orefield in Belgium and Germany. The significance of metalliferous substrates in the distribution of the metallophytes varies from orefield to orefield and this is investigated. Certain sites, by virtue of their environmental and species diversity, are outstanding as habitats for the metallophytes and some of these are described. Observations on the importance and problems of the conservation of the metallophyte habitats are included.  相似文献
