Size-frequency distributions were determined for 3 common lantern-fishes (Stenobrachius leucopsarus, Diaphus theta, and Tarletonbeania crenularis) off Oregon in the summer. The fishes were caught mainly in sound-scattering layers by a large pelagic trawl with 5 opening-closing nets. Changes in depth distribution and diel vertical migration with growth were evident for all 3 species. The size of S. leucopsarus increased markedly with depth both at 0 to 90 m at night and 250 to 500 m during the day. Larger D. theta were also found deeper during the day (between 250 and 450 m), but neither D. theta nor T. crenularis demonstrated size segregation in the upper 90 m at night. Large D. theta and small T. crenularis did not appear to migrate into surface waters at night. Age-Group O (15 to 20 mm) S. leucopsarus were most abundant in deep water (400 to 480 m) in the daytime and did not migrate into near-surface waters at night. Age-Group I (30 to 40 mm) S. leucopsarus were common at about 300 m by day and within the upper 30 m at night. Age-Group II–III (50 to 60 mm) apparently followed the evening ascent of Age-Group I fish and most resided at 75 to 90 m at night, beneath Age-Group I fish. Age-Group III+fish (70 to 80 mm) were associated with Age-Group O at 400 to 480 m by day and usually did not migrate above 200 m at night. The size structure of S. leucopsarus differed among the nets of a single tow at one depth, or between two tows that fished the same depths on successive nights, indicating horizontal patchiness in age structure. D. theta demonstrated low within-tow variability in size composition which indicated a spatially more uniform age structure on a scale of kilometers. The size structures of these 3 lanternfishes were different in the same area and the same season during two different years, suggesting variable survival of year classes or horizontal patchiness of age composition in the area sampled.  相似文献

The reproductive biology of the jellyfish Catostylus mosaicus (Quoy and Gaimard 1824) (Scyphozoa: Rhizostomeae) was investigated in New South Wales, Australia. Medusae were gonochoristic. There was a 1:1 ratio of male and female medusae and there was no evidence of sexual dimorphism. Oocytes arose from the gastrodermis and maintained contact with the gastrodermis, via trophocytes, throughout gametogenesis. Spermatogenesis occurred within follicles that arose from invagination of the gastrodermis. Detailed sampling of gonads over a period of 3.25 yr in Botany Bay, and over 2.5 yr in Lake Illawarra, indicated that gametogenesis occurred almost continuously during the year. Oocytes were smaller, or were absent from the ovaries during 3 of the 4 winters sampled at Botany Bay and during all 3 winter periods sampled at Lake Illawarra. Comparisons were made with other locations, although these were sampled less frequently. When medusae were present at a location, similar trends were observed. The size at which medusae matured varied, but during non-winter periods and at two locations, all medusae exceeding 130 mm diam were considered mature. Vermilion snapper (Rhomboplites aurorubens) were collected from four sites off the Atlantic coast of the USA and one site in the Gulf of Mexico to evaluate effective population size and genetic stock structure. Previous studies had suggested geographic variation in the ratio of males to females, so this population characteristic was explored in conjunction with the genetic analysis. Sex ratio varied greatly among the five sample sites; males comprised 57% of samples in the Gulf of Mexico, while within the South Atlantic Bight they comprised between 36% (Morehead City, North Carolina) and 53% (Carolina Beach, North Carolina) of samples. No clear geographic trends in the sex ratio emerged; instead, it was found to vary with fish length, the percentage of males decreasing with increasing size. Allelic variation assessed at seven dinucleotide microsatellite loci was large; gene diversities ranged from 0.43 to 0.95 and allelic counts from 7 to 39. Estimates of the effective population size ranged from 24 500 (based on the infinite-alleles model) to 150 500 (based on the stepwise-mutation model). There was evidence for excess homozygosity within samples: estimates of F IS (the correlation of alleles within individuals) ranged from 0.01 to 0.03 among the seven loci, and three estimates were significantly greater than zero. Differentiation among localities was very weak, as estimates of F ST (the correlation of alleles within populations) were on the order of 0.001 to 0.002 and genetic distance estimates between localities were not related to geographic distances. This suggested that vermilion snapper in the South Atlantic Bight (Cape Hatteras, North Carolina to Cape Canaveral, Florida) and Gulf of Mexico are likely to consist of one genetic stock. Despite the overall homogeneity, there were indications of a temporally dynamic local structure that would bear further examination. Received: 6 July 1998 / Accepted: 9 February 1999  相似文献

In the Adriatic Sea, the spatial distribution and aggregation aspects of swarning Pelagia noctiluca (Forskål, 1775) were studied by SCUBA divers from August 1984 to November 1985. Medusae were asually distributed in the upper 20- to 30-m layer. Dense aggregations caused by wind, currents and tidal phenomena occurred only in shallow coastal waters. Maximum population densities of swarms drifting freely near the shore were estimated at about 20 individuals per cubic meter, but when they had drifted ashore jellyfish could reach concentrations of 150 to 600 individuals in the same volume of sea water. Some peculiar forms of aggregations could be distinguished: couples, clusters, and surface and bottom aggregations. The effects of wind, currents and geomorphological features of the shore on passive aggregations of jellyfish are presented.  相似文献

In tropical and subtropical regions of the world, jellyfish stings cause fatalities by means of venom injecting nematocysts. For nematocyst discharge an adequate combination of chemical and mechanical stimulation is required. In order to test whether skin care products can protect against nematocyst discharge, we tested two sunscreens and one lotion applied to pieces of live human skin and exposed them to Cyanea capillata tentacles. (Test specimens were collected in 1990 along the shore of Rømø, Denmark and in the Flensburger Förde.) The fine structure analysis of the cnidom of C. capillata showed a high grade of variation in shape and size. The basic distinctive characteristic for stomocnides and astomocnides, the terminal opening at the tubule tip, could not be found. The identification of spines at the basal tubule of atrichous isorhizas suggested that these should be characterized as basitrichous isorhizas. An association between nematocyst morphology and a special function such as penetration or entanglement was not observed. All nematocyst types penetrated unprotected skin. Parafilm (an inert material) and unprotected skin substrates served as controls. The discharged nematocysts on the skin and Parafilm surfaces were counted using scanning electron microscopy. The percentage of discharged nematocysts on test substance protected skin surfaces ranged from only 7.7 to 38.2%, compared to 100% on the unprotected control skin. In addition to this marked reduction in nematocyst discharge, the relatively few discharged nematocysts on protected skin showed malfunctions, and the injection of venom would have failed because the tubules of the nematocysts did not penetrate the skin. The results indicate a general possibility that human skin may be protected against nematocyst discharge of jellyfish with the application of sunscreen or lotion.  相似文献

The horizontal and vertical distributions of adult mesopelagic fishes are described from acoustic and trawl surveys over the full-depth of 500 m at 169 stations on a longitudinal transect crossing the Humboldt Current (03°45′S, 81°76′W and 18°23′S, 71°13′W) at 50–200 nautical miles off Peru during austral spring (October–November) of 2001, 2002 and 2003. A total of 2,952 kg of fishes was collected, which included 13 families, 23 genera and 28 species. The mesopelagic community is dominated by the families Phosichthyidae (Vinciguerria lucetia), Myctophidae (Diogenichthys laternatus and Lampanyctus idostigma) and Bathylagidae (Leuroglossus urotranus), accounting for 60.4, 12.8 and 3.7%, respectively, of the total catch. Based on horizontal distribution patterns these species were categorized into three groups, i.e. northern-central upwelling front group (L. urotranus, Nemichthys fronto and Scopelarchoides nicholsi), Southern upwelling front group (Hygophum reinhardti, Myctophum nitidulum, Paralepis sp and Scopeloberyx sp.) and pan-Humboldt Current group (V. lucetia, D. laternatus, L. (Nannobrachium) idostigma, L. omostigma, M. aurolaternatum, Triphoturus oculeus, Bathylagus (Melanolagus) berycoides, Leuroglossus stilbius, Argyropelecus affinis, Sternoptyx obscura, Melamphaes sp., Stomias sp. and Scopelosaurus sp.). Nighttime vertical distribution was characterized by a single abundance peak in the upper 50 m. Daytime patterns showed three peaks of abundance: an upper peak, in the upper 100 m, a midwater peak between 200 and 400 m, coinciding with an oxygen minimum zone, and a deeper peak between 400 and 500 m. V. lucetia was dominant in the upper and midwater peaks while myctophids, other planctivorous and piscivorous fishes were distributed in the midwater. Acoustic back-scattered energy (S a) was ubiquitous in the region. Maximum S a was mainly located between 11° and 18°S during day and night. V. lucetia is a significant component of the sound-scattering layers in the Humboldt Current Region off Peru.  相似文献

Picocyanobacteria, which specifically excited the phycobilin pigments by green light, were numerically counted under an epifluorescence microscope in the Kuroshio and the Oyashio between 1 and 9 July 1983, and in coastal waters between 10 and 12 August 1983 off Japan. The fluorescence, and the various morphological and chemical characters of the picocyanobacteria were evaluated by using monospecific strains isolated from the study area. Plasma volume determined on the epifluorescence microscopic photographs was converted into cellular organic carbon using a relation obtained from the isolates. Percentages of the picocyanobacteria biomass in terms of cellular carbon ranged between 8.3 to 79.4% of the total picophytoplankton (<3 m), and between 4.7 to 46.4% of the total phytoplankton. The larger percentages of the picocyanobacteria occurred consistently in low chlorophyll waters.  相似文献

Population dynamics of a Gari solida (Gray, 1828) population from Bahía Independencia, Peru (14°S) was studied between November 1989 and February 1995 (except for 1991) in order to investigate the effects of the climate phenomenon El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) which occurred in 1992/93. Results indicate that ENSO had negative effects on gonad production in 1992, when temperatures were very high, and positive effects in 1993, when temperatures were lower, but the warm period lasted longer than in 1992. Higher reproductive output in 1993 was achieved by several spawning events in addition to the normal pattern. Growth rate in 1990 was higher (K=0.495) than in 1993/94 (K=0.346). A possible explanation could be that more energy was allocated to reproduction, and thus less surplus energy remained for growth. The negative effect of ENSO on production in 1992 is indicated by the low P/B ratio (0.298); in all other years P/B was consistently higher (1990: 0.570; 1993: 0.597; 1994: 0.597). From 1990 to 1994 a reduction of mean annual biomass from 189.3 to 14.4 g ash-free dry weight m-2 was also observed which may be related to fishery activities. The consistency of P/B ratio is best explained by the higher somatic production of the smaller individuals remaining after the larger individuals had been removed selectively by fishermen. Based on the results presented in this study and from the literature, a model is proposed depicting how ENSO may negatively affect bivalve populations. Two main factors are mentioned, increased temperature and reduction of assimilated energy.Contribution No. 991 of the Alfred-Wegener-Institut für Polar- und Meeresforschung, Germany  相似文献

Estimators for the population sizes of animal species are similar to Horvitz-Thompson estimators — they involve dividing counts of detected animals by the probabilities of detection. Knowing detection probabilities for different subpopulations allows one to estimate each sub-population size with such an estimator, and to add the results for an estimator of the total population. In the case where the proportions of animals belonging to the different sub-populations are also known, this paper shows that using those proportions to arrive at a common average detection probability will, when used in conjunction with the total number of animals detected, result in a better estimator. We provide two examples where the inferior estimator may seem sensible.  相似文献

The life history and settlement preferences of larvae of Catostylus mosaicus (Scyphozoa: Rhizostomeae) (Quoy and Gaimard, 1824) were investigated in New South Wales, Australia, over a 2 mo period beginning in November 1998. The life history consisted of an alternation between a sexual, medusoid stage and an asexual, polypoid stage, and was similar to that described for other rhizostomes. Planula larvae were brooded by the adults. Approximately 4 d after collection, larvae settled on a variety of substrata including wood, sandstone, shell, seagrass and glass, and metamorphosed into four-tentacled polyps. The number of tentacles increased and polyps strobilated when they had between 12 and 20 tentacles. Strobilation occurred within 15 d of settlement, but only polyps that settled on the concave surfaces of the shells strobilated. Both monodisk and polydisk strobilation was observed. Ephyrae were raised for one month and were observed developing oral arms. Polyps reproduced asexually via the formation of podocysts, by production of buds, and by partial fission. Estimation of population size has traditionally been viewed from a finite population sampling perspective. Typically, the objective is to obtain an estimate of the total population count of individuals within some region. Often, some stratification scheme is used to estimate counts on subregions, whereby the total count is obtained by aggregation with weights, say, proportional to the areas of the subregions. We offer an alternative to the finite population sampling approach for estimating population size. The method does not require that the subregions on which counts are available form a complete partition of the region of interest. In fact, we envision counts coming from areal units that are small relative to the entire study region and that the total area sampled is a very small proportion of the total study area. In extrapolating to the entire region, we might benefit from assuming that there is spatial structure to the counts. We implement this by modeling the intensity surface as a realization from a spatially correlated random process. In the case of multiple population or species counts, we use the linear model of coregionalization to specify a multivariate process which provides associated intensity surfaces hence association between counts within and across areal units. We illustrate the method of population size estimation with simulated data and with tree counts from a Southwestern pinyon-juniper woodland data set.  相似文献

Using the number of segments of pleopod rami as a marker of instar number, the population structure (instar composition) of the mesopelagic gammarid amphipod Cyphocaris challengeri was investigated by monthly samplings from May 1997 to April 1999 at a station off southwest Hokkaido, Japan. Laboratory-rearing experiments were also conducted to establish the relationship between the number of segments of pleopod rami and instar number, and to estimate the growth pattern of this gammarid based on the intermolt period and molt-increment data. Stratified sampling in the field (0 to 200 and 200 to 400 m depth strata) showed this species occurred mainly at 200 to 400 m depth during the day. Instar analysis indicated that C. challengeri has 12 instars in females and 11 instars in males. Based on observations of secondary sexual characters, Instars 1 to 6 were designated juveniles (Instars 1 to 3 occurred in the marsupia of gravid females); in males, 7 to 9 were immature and 10 and 11 were mature, while in females 7 and 8 were immature and 9 to 12 were mature. Off southwest Hokkaido, Instar 4 (just released from a female's marsupium) was found throughout the year, with a peak abundance occurring in April to July of each year. A sequential development of Instar 4 to 9 (youngest adult instar) through the year was observed. Generation length (i.e. the time required to grow from Instar 4 to 10) was estimated from a laboratory-obtained growth curve to be 216 to 584 d at the in situ temperature range (2 to 5 °C), which is consistent with observations on field populations. Specimens older than Instar 9 were rare in the field and could not be used in laboratory-rearing experiments, so longevity could not be estimated. Eggs were oval and measured 0.6 mm (large diameter). Brood size ranged from 20 to 65. Comparing the present results with those of epipelagic hyperiid amphipods, the nearly identical growth rates together with the production of fewer but larger eggs seen in C. challengeri appear to reflect to the typical life mode of deep-living pelagic crustaceans. The upwelling systems along the coast of Morocco support some of the largest populations of sardine (Sardina pilchardus) in the world. Although these populations provide a base for a substantial fishing industry, virtually nothing is known about the genetic stock structure of this fish. Samples (n = 346), collected from seven sites along the Atlantic coast and in the Alboran Sea, were examined for exon-primed intron-crossing PCR (EPIC-PCR) polymorphism. Two markers, CaM-4 and Ops-1, had 6 and 9 alleles, respectively, after the pooling of gel fragments into 5 bp length classes, Correspondence analysis and the distribution of F st among samples indicated that Moroccan populations were divided into two groups with F st = 0.034 (< 0.05) across the Gibraltar Strait. Populations along the Atlantic coast of Morocco comprise one genetic unit, except for a weak genetic boundary south of Cape Ghir and the peculiar behavior of the Safi sample would indicate a genetic drift. Complex ocean hydrodynamics around Gibraltar Strait and across Cape Ghir, likely, contributes to these genetic isolations. These results point out the usefulness of population genetic studies in stock management for sardine populations that may be particularly vulnerable to overexploitation especially during upwelling intensity shifts.  相似文献

The distribution of moon jellyfish (Aurelia aurita Linnaeus, 1758) in the Black Sea was determined from plankton samples collected above the anoxic zone (maximum depth 200 m) in the summer, winter and spring during 1991–1995. Distribution was patchy. Average biomass ranged from 98 to 380 g m−2, and abundance varied from 2 to 14 individuals m−2. Biomass and abundance peaked in late spring and summer. The distribution was correlated with hydrographic features in the Black Sea, with higher concentrations occurring at the peripheries of anticyclonic eddies. Centers of the two main cyclonic gyres generally had a low biomass of A. aurita. From July 1992 to March 1995, the populations were largely concentrated in offshore regions. A. aurita were confined to the upper part of the mixed layer. Smaller A. aurita (≤1 cm) were present in early spring (March), and individuals reached maximum size in the summer. Release of the epyhrae occurred in spring on the northwestern shelf of the sea when the seawater temperature was 11–12 °C. Microscopic analysis of stomach contents showed that copepods and mollusks form their main diet. Received: 3 September 2000 / Accepted: 29 September 2000  相似文献

A removal model for estimating population size which uses the known population sex ratio is studied. A maximum likelihood estimate and an optimal martingale estimate of the population size are proposed. Their standard errors and large sample properties are obtained. Simulation studies are reported, and the performance of the proposed estimators are compared with the standard maximum likelihood estimator which ignores the sex ratio information. An example on a capture study of deer mice is given.  相似文献

To determine the origin of juvenile loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) that occupy the Charleston Harbor Entrance Channel at Charleston, South Carolina, USA, mitochondrial DNA restriction-fragment length polymorphisms from this feeding population were compared to haplotypes from candidate nesting populations. Previous studies have defined two major nesting populations in the southeastern USA, one corresponding to Florida and the other to Georgia/South Carolina. These nesting populations are distinguished by both unique haplotypes and frequency distributions of common haplotypes. The frequency distribution of haplotypes in the juvenile feeding-ground population was significantly different from both nesting populations, implying that the feeding aggregate is drawn from two or more nesting populations. Assuming that these turtles are derived exclusively from rookeries in the southeastern USA, a maximum likelihood estimator indicates that approximately half are from the Florida rookery and half are from the northern (Georgia/South Carolina) rookery complex. Because 91% of nesting in the southeastern USA occurs in Florida rookeries and 8% in the northern complex, the 50:50 ratio indicates that juvenile turtles from Georgia and South Carolina tend to feed preferentially near their respective rookery locations. Human encroachment on this feeding habitat may pose an especially high risk to the smaller Georgia/South Carolina rookeries.  相似文献

During March and April 1976, a red tide, dominated by the dinoflagellate Gymnodinium splendens Lebour, developed in the vicinity of 15°06'S and 75°31'W off Peru. At the height of the bloom, the euphotic zone was 6 m deep and the chlorophyll a at the surface was 48 g l-1. A daily collection of zooplankton at 09.00 hrs showed large fluctuations of biomass, from 0.2 to 3.84 g dry weight m-2 in a water column of 120m. Copepodids and nauplii dominated the collections. During a period of reduced wind, the adult copepods were a mixture of the species characteristic of the coastal upwelling system and the neritic species associated with more northerly, tropical waters. Nitrogen regeneration by the zooplankton varied with the development of the bloom, the type of zooplankton dominating the experiment, and biomass fluctuations, but never accounted for more than 25% of the nitrogen uptake by phytoplankton.  相似文献
