Remote sensing instruments may be used to make measurements of emission levels from individual vehicles under realdriving conditions. In designing such an instrument, that will identify the gross polluters, the CFD modelling approach has been used to study the effects of the parameters involved on the characteristics of the exhaust gas plume. The analysis was performed using the ADREA-HF code in open space, street canyon and tunnel environments, with sensitivity parameters the car speed and meteorological conditions. The calculations have been performed in a moving coordinate system, with the car and site geometry being fully resolved. A discussion is given on the effects of the various parameters affecting the design of the instrument.  相似文献

Microscale computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelsdeveloped in different European countries were applied towell defined test cases comprising a variety of 2 and 3dimensional configurations for which measurements from windtunnel or field studies were available. This paper presentsthe results of five CFD codes employing the widely used`standard k--model' (CHENSI, CHENSI-2, MIMO, MISKAM, TASCflow) for a street canyon in Hannover, Germany(Göttinger Strasse). Firstly the characteristics of theflow field predicted by the different codes are comparedwith high spatial resolution wind tunnel measurements;secondly the calculated concentration fields are comparedwith field and wind tunnel data. Both agreements (e.g. forthe general flow and concentration fields) anddisagreements (e.g. for the level of concentration) areobserved in the comparison. The discussion aims atexplaining the differences along with giving somesuggestions to CFD model users on how to calculate suchcomplex flows, but also to experimentalists on whereconcentration measurements should be taken in order to bemore representative for a whole street and to avoiddistinct local effects.  相似文献

During the Nantes'99 experiment, pollution concentrations, temperature, flow and turbulence conditions were measured at several locations in Rue de Strasbourg, Nantes, France. Traffic was measured by vehicle counters at different places within the street. Traffic speed was monitored as well. The measuring campaign was conducted in the period June–July 1999 but only data from a selected intensive observation period are used in this study. This period was selected to suit conditions required for study of the traffic produced turbulence and the thermal effects and is characterised by quite low wind speeds. The data are used here for examination of concentration distributions in the street. Measurements are compared to model results calculated by a simple parameterised model, the Operational Street Pollution Model (OSPM) and a 3-D CFD model MISKAM. Both models reproduce reasonably well the observed distribution of pollutants in the street. Due to predominantly low wind speed conditions, such effects as the traffic produced turbulence play a quite significant role. The model results provided by MISKAM are scaled using a velocity scale depending on the traffic produced turbulence. Application of a scaling velocity depending on wind speed only, provides unrealistic results.  相似文献

The main objective of this work is to analyse how uncertainties in emission data of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOC), originated from road traffic, influence the model prediction of ozone (O3) concentration fields. Different methods to estimate emissions were applied and results were compared in order to obtain their variability. Based on these data, different emission scenarios were compiled for each pollutant considering the minimum and the maximum values of the estimated emission range. These scenarios were used as input to the MAR-IV mesoscale modelling system. Simulations have been performed for a summer day in the Northern Region of Portugal. The different approaches to estimate NOx and VOC traffic emissions show a significant variability of absolute values and of their spatial distribution. Comparison of modelling results obtained from the two scenarios presents a dissimilarity of 37% for ozone concentration fields as a response of the system to a variation in the input emission data of 63% for NOx and 59% for VOC. Far beyond all difficulties and approximations, the developed methodology to build up an emission data base shows to be consistent and an useful tool in order to turn applicable an air quality model. Nevertheless, the sensitivity of the model to input data should be considered when it is used as a decision support tool.  相似文献

A CFD scheme was presented for modeling municipal solid waste (MSW) combustion in a moving-grate incinerator, including the in-bed burning of solid wastes, the out-of-bed burnout of gaseous volatiles, and the selective non-catalytic reduction (SNCR) process between urea (CO(NH2)2) and NOx. The in-bed calculations provided 2-D profiles of the gas–solid temperatures and the gas species concentrations along the bed length, which were then used as inlet conditions for the out-of-bed computations. The over-bed simulations provided the profiles of incident radiation heat flux on the top of bed. A 3-dimensional benchmark simulation was conducted with a 750 t/day commercial incinerator using the present coupling scheme incorporating with a reduced SNCR reduction mechanism. Numerical tests were performed to investigate the effects of operating parameters such as injection position, injection speed and the normalized stoichiometric ratio (NSR) on the SNCR performance. The simulation results showed that the distributions of gas velocity, temperature and NOx concentration were highly non-uniform, which made the injection position one of the most sensitive operating parameters influencing the SNCR performance of moving grate incinerators. The simulation results also showed that multi-layer injections were needed to meet the EU2000 standard, and a NSR 1.5 was suggested as a compromise of a satisfactory NOx reduction and reasonable NH3 slip rates. This work provided useful guides to the design and operation of SNCR process in moving-grate incinerators.  相似文献

The dominating source of particles in urban air is road traffic. In terms of number concentration, its main contribution is within the range of ultrafine particles (Dp < 100 nm). The dispersion conditions, i.e. transport and dilution, of the submicrometer particles are expected to be like for gases and therefore the particle concentrations in a street canyon can be calculated using gaseous pollutants dispersion models. Such processes, like coagulation or condensation, are less important due to the short residence time within the street canyon environment. Two extensive measuring campaigns were conducted in the street Jagtvej in Copenhagen, Denmark. The particle size distributions were measured by a Differential Mobility Analyser (DMA) coupled to a particle counter, providing high time resolution data (1/2 hourly) on a continuous basis. Measurements of NOx, CO and meteorological parameters were also available. The measured particle number concentrations, especially below 100 nm, reveal very similar dependence on the meteorological conditions as the NOx concentrations. This underpins the conclusion that dilution properties are similar for particles and NOx. For particle sizes over 100 nm, somewhat different behaviour is observed. This points toward existence of additional particle sources, not related to traffic emissions within the street canyon. A significant contribution is believed here to be attributed to long-range transport. The total particle emission from traffic, including daily variation and size distribution, has been calculated using the OSPM dispersion model. Results are in accordance with a previous analysis based on statistical modelling.  相似文献

We have studied particulate matter (PM) concentrations,PM10 and PM2.5, measured in an urban air qualitymonitoring network in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area during1997–1999. The data includes PM10 concentrationsmeasured at five locations (two urban traffic, one suburbantraffic, one urban background and one regional backgroundsite) and PM2.5 concentrations measured at twolocations (urban traffic and urban background sites). Theconcentrations of PM10 show a clear diurnal variation,as well as a spatial variation within the area. Bycontrast, both the spatial and temporal variation of thePM2.5 concentrations was moderate. We have analysedthe evolution of urban PM concentrations in terms of therelevant meteorological parameters in the course of oneselected peak pollution episode during 21–31 March, 1998.The meteorological variables considered included wind speedand direction, ambient temperature, precipitation, relativehumidity, atmospheric pressure at the ground level, atmospheric stability and mixing height. The elevated PMconcentrations during the 1998 March episode were clearlyrelated to conditions of high atmospheric pressure, relatively low ambient temperatures and low wind speeds inpredominantly stable atmospheric conditions. The resultsprovide indirect evidence indicating that the PM10concentrations originate mainly from local vehiculartraffic (direct emissions and resuspension), while thePM2.5 concentrations are mostly of regionally andlong-range transported origin.  相似文献

The RESRAD‐BUILD and RESRAD computer codes were used for dose assessment of the 105‐C Process Water Tunnels at the Hanford Site. The evaluation assessed three different exposure scenarios: recreational use, tunnel maintenance worker, and residential use. The recreationist and maintenance worker scenarios were evaluated by using RESRAD‐BUILD, a computer model for analyzing the radiological doses resulting from remediation and occupancy of structures contaminated with radioactive material. The recreationist was assumed to use the tunnels as an overnight shelter for eight hours per day for one week. The maintenance worker was assumed to spend 20 hours per year working in the the tunnel. Six exposure pathways were considered for both scenarios in dose assessment. The gradual removal of surface contamination over time and ingrowth of decay products were considered in calculating the dose at different times. The maximum dose would occur immediately after the release and was estimated to be 1.9 mrem/yr for the recreationist and 0.9 mrem/yr for the maintenance worker. The residential scenario was evaluated by using the probabilistic RESRAD code. It was assumed that total activity from the tunnels would be brought into the near‐surface layer by future human activities. Eight exposure pathways were considered. The maximum yearly dose for this very unlikely scenario would occur immediately after the release and was less than 4 mrem/yr for the maximally exposed individual. The assessment demonstrates that both codes are suitable for nuclear facility decontamination and decommissioning sites, where buildings and structures with residual radioactivity must be evaluated to facilitate property transfer or release.  相似文献

Data from an ozone episode (2–5 June, 1998) in the Milan metropolitan area were used for an application of two photochemical grid models: UAM-V and CALGRID. To assure a fair comparison, the models were run on the same domain and grid size, with same source emission inputs, CALMET diagnostic meteorology, and initial and boundary conditions taken from air quality data and literature values. Hourly emissions were derived from the AutoOil-II programme inventory except for on-road mobile source emissions; a new traffic emission inventory, based on both COPERT II methodology and road classification has been developed. NOx and O3 concentration results were compared to local network monitoring data. Results indicate that both models predict the highest ozone values along the north-east direction and are able to reproduce the ozone daytime trend though differences can be found between the two models on ozone spatial distribution. Average normalised bias for both models is about 50%, peak daily ozone concentrations are underestimated, with simulated peak shapes broader than the observed ones and a temporal shift between the two models. Night-time concentration levels of pollutants were not successfully reproduced due to an incorrect parameterisation of vertical turbulence calling for further work.  相似文献

This study focused on the detection of rare earth oxides, used as tracers for the identification of polymer materials, using XRF (X-ray fluorescence) spectrometry. The tests were carried out in a test system device which allows the collection of static measurements of the samples’ spectrum through the use of energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence technology.A sorting process based on tracers added into the polymer matrix is proposed in order to increase sorting selectivity of polypropylene during end-of-life recycling. Tracers consist of systems formed by one or by several substances dispersed into a material, to add a selective property to it, with the aim of improving the efficiency of sorting and high speed identification.Several samples containing rare earth oxides (Y2O3, CeO2, Nd2O3, Gd2O3, Dy2O3, Er2O3 and Yb2O3) in different concentrations were prepared in order to analyse some of the parameters which can influence the detection, such as the concentration of tracers, the acquisition time and the possible overlapping among the tracers. This work shows that by using the XRF test system device, it was possible to detect 5 of the 7 tracers tested for 1 min exposure time and at a concentration level of 1000 ppm. These two parameters will play an important role in the development of an industrial device, which indicates the necessity of further works that needs to be conducted in order to reduce them.  相似文献

Two lab-scale trickle-bed air biofilters were operated for investigating the difference in performance between a hydrophilic and a hydrophobic volatile organic compound (VOC). Methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) and styrene were selected as a model hydrophilic and hydrophobic VOCs, respectively. Effects of loading rates, biofilter re-acclimation, removal profile along biofilter depth, nitrogen consumption, and CO2 production were compared under three operating conditions, namely, backwashing and two non-use periods (starvation and stagnant). Consistent over 99% removal efficiency up to loading rates of 3.26 kg COD/m3-day was obtained for the MIBK biofilter at 0.76 min empty bed retention time (EBRT) and 1.5 L/d nutrient flow. A similar performance for the styrene biofilter was obtained for loading rates up to 1.9kg COD/m3-day at 2.02 min EBRT and 2.4 L/d nutrient flow. The MIBK biofilter required only an initial acclimation period of 16 days while styrene biofilter required 46 days. Non-use periods can be used as another means of biomass control for both biofilters when the employed loading rate did not exceed 1.27 and 2.17 kg COD/m3-day for styrene and MIBK biofilters, respectively. The re-acclimation of both biofilter was delayed with increase of loading rate. MIBK biofilter re-acclimated in 90 min, while styrene biofilter re-acclimated in more than 600 min. Under similar loading rates, MIBK biofilter utilized less biofilter depth than styrene biofilter. Nitrogen consumption behaviors were apparently different between the two biofilters. Styrene biofilter had higher CO2 production than MIBK biofilter and its CO2 production was closely related to the theoretical complete chemical oxidation.  相似文献

The current state-of-practice in the US for estimatingvehicle emissions is based on a single traffic-relatedexplanatory variable, namely average speed. Research, however, has demonstrated that the use of average speed asa single traffic-related variable is insufficient for theestimation of vehicle emissions. For example, although theEnvironmental Protection Agency (EPA) MOBILE5 model wouldindicate that a slowing of traffic typically increasesemissions, empirical research indicates the opposite inmany cases. The objective of this paper is to identify criticalaggregate trip variables as potential explanatory variablesfor the estimation of a vehicle's fuel consumption andemissions. Subsequently, statistical models for estimatingfuel consumption and emissions of hydrocarbon (HC), carbonmonoxide (CO), and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) aredeveloped using these critical variables that include theaverage speed, speed variability, the level ofdeceleration, and the level of acceleration. The proposedmodels are demonstrated to be consistent with microscopicenergy and emission model estimates that are based on thevehicle's instantaneous speed and acceleration levels(coefficient of determination ranges from 0.88 to 0.96).  相似文献

This work presents the first results of a study concerning on-road and in-vehicle exposure to particulate matter in the area of Athens. PM10 concentration measurements were conducted by TSI DustTrak, while driving along routes with different characteristics of traffic density, during September 2003–March 2004. Concurrent measurements of the ultrafine particles (UFPs) number concentration were also conducted, by condensation particle counter during part of the days. Pedestrian exposure to PM10 and UFPs was also studied through stationary measurements on the kerbside of selected roads on November 2003 and February 2004. A major avenue, a heavy-trafficked road across a children hospital and two central roads, one in a residential and one in a commercial area were selected for measurement. The results indicate that every day commuters are exposed to significant concentration levels. Higher exposures were observed in heavy-trafficked areas and during rush hours. Mean PM10 in-vehicle and on-road concentrations ranged from 30–320 μg/m3 and 70–285 μg/m3, respectively. The ultrafine particles number concentrations were in the range of 5.0 × 104–17.3 × 104 particles/cm3 in-vehicle and 3.1 × 104–7.3 × 104 particles/cm3 on the kerbside of a central residential road. Both PM10 and UFPs concentrations presented repeated short-term peak exposures. The results clearly point out the importance of the road microenvironment (in-vehicle and on kerbside) for population exposure in urban areas.  相似文献

Variation in polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin and polychlorinated dibenzofuran (PCDD and PCDF) homologue profiles from a pilot scale (0.6 MWt, 2×106 Btu/h), co-fired-fuel [densified refuse derived fuel (dRDF) and high-sulfur Illinois coal] combustion system was used to provide insights into effects of combustion parameters on PCDD and PCDF pollutant formation. A 24-run, statistically designed test matrix varied dRDF and/or coal firing rates (at a constant targeted energy release rate) along with a range of process variables including calcium hydroxide injection, hydrogen chloride (HCl) concentration, flue gas temperature, quench, and residence time such that the results would be relatable to a wide variety of combustion conditions. Statistical analysis of the molar homologue profiles enabled interpretation based on non-confounding variables. A multivariate, generalized additive model, based on transformations of the design variables, described 83% of the variation of the profiles characterized by log ratios of the homologue molar concentrations. This method identifies the operating parameters that are most significant in determining the PCDD/F homologue profiles. The model can be exercised to predict homologue profiles through input of these system-specific operating parameters. For example, both higher HCl and sulfur dioxide concentrations favor higher relative formation of the lower chlorinated PCDF homologues.  相似文献

The rising popularity of incineration of municipal solid waste (MSW) calls for detailed mathematical modelling and understanding of the incineration process. In this paper, governing equations for mass, momentum and heat transfer for both solid and gaseous phases in a moving bed in a solid-waste incineration furnace are described and relevant sub-models are presented. The burning rates of volatile hydrocarbons in the moving bed of solids are limited not only by the reaction kinetics but also the mixing of the volatile fuels with the under-fire air. The mixing rate is averaged across a computation cell and correlated to a number of parameters including local void fraction of the bed, gas velocity and a length scale comparable to the particle size in the bed. A correlation equation is also included to calculate the mixing in the freeboard area immediately next to the bed surface. A small-scale fixed bed waste incinerator was built and test runs were made in which total mass loss from the bed, temperature and gas composition at different locations along the bed height were measured. A 2-D bed-modelling program (FLIC) was developed which incorporates the various sub-process models and solves the governing equations for both gases and solids. Thermal and chemical processes are mainly confined within a layer about 5-9 times in thickness of the averaged particle size in the burning bed. For a large part of the burning process, the total mass loss rate was constant until the solid waste was totally dried out and a period of highly rising CO emission followed. The maximum bed temperature was around 1200 K. The whole burning process ended within 60 min. Big fluctuations in species concentration were observed due to channelling and subsequent 'catastrophic' changes in the local bed conditions. Reasonably good agreement between modelling and measurements has been achieved. Yet the modelling work is complicated by the channelling phenomenon in the bed. Numerical simulations without consideration of the channelling effect produced very good agreement with experiments concerning the total mass loss, but significant discrepancy exists for temperature and gas composition profiles. Transient phenomena such as the breaking of waste particles and the "catastrophic" creation of new burning channels occurring during waste incineration is a vital area requiring further investigation at the fundamental level. The underlying theory of bed behaviour must be extended to include these transient events.  相似文献

The formulations and evaluation of ROADWAY-2, a near-highway pollutant dispersion model, are described. This model incorporates vehicle wake parameterizations derived from canopy flow theory and wind tunnel measurements. The atmospheric velocity and turbulence fields are adjusted to account for velocity-deficit and turbulence production in vehicle wakes. A turbulent kinetic energy closure model of the atmospheric boundary layer is used to derive the mean velocity, temperature, and turbulence profiles from input meteorological data. ROADWAY-2 has been evaluated using SF6 tracer data from General Motors Sulfate Dispersion Experiment. The model evaluationresults are presented and discussed.  相似文献

The rising popularity of incineration of municipal solid waste (MSW) calls for detailed mathematical modeling and accurate prediction of pollutant emissions. In this paper, mathematical modeling methods for both solid and gaseous phases were employed to simulate the operation of a 450 t/d MSW-burning incinerator to obtain detailed information on the flow and combustion characteristics in the furnace and to predict the amount of pollutant emissions. The predicted data were compared to on-site measurements of gas temperature, gas composition and SNCR de-NOX system. The major operating conditions considered in this paper were grate speed and oxygen concentration. A suitable grate speed ensures complete waste combustion. The predictions are as follows: volatile release increases with increasing grate speed, and the maximal value is within the range of 700–800 kg/m2 h; slow grate speeds result in incomplete combustion of fixed carbon; the gas temperature at slow grate speeds is higher due to adequate oxygenation for fixed carbon combustion, and the deviation reaches 200 K; NOX emission decreases, but CO emission and O2 concentrations increase, and the deviation is 63%, 34% and 35%, respectively. Oxygen-enriched atmospheres promote the destruction of most pollutants due to the high oxygen partial pressure and temperature. The furnace temperature, NO production and CO emission increase as the oxygen concentration increases, and the deviation of furnace exit temperature, NO and CO concentration is 38.26%, 58.43% and 86.67%, respectively. Finally, oxygen concentration is limited to below 35% to prevent excessive CO and NOX emission without compromising plant performance. The current work greatly helps to understand the operating characteristics of large-scale MSW-burning plants.  相似文献

Nitrous oxide (N2O) release and denitrification rates were investigated from the intertidal saltmarsh and mudflats of two European river estuaries, the Couesnon in Normandy, France and the Torridge in Devon, UK. Sediment cores and water were collected from each study site and incubated for 72 h in tidal simulation chambers. Gas samples were collected at 6 and 12 h intervals from the chambers during incubation. From these N2O emission rates were calculated. The greatest rates for both N2O production and denitrification were measured from saltmarsh cores. These were 1032 μmol N2O m?2 day?1 and 2518 μmol N2 m?2 day?1, respectively, from the Couesnon and 109 μmol N2O m?2 day?1 and 303 μmol N2 m?2 day?1 from the Torridge. A strong positive correlation was apparent with N2O emission rates and ammonium concentration in the sediment, nitrate concentration in floodwater and sediment aerobicity.  相似文献

In this study, slurry photocatalytic oxidation process was investigated for natural organic matter removal from aqueous humic acid solutions by using different titanium dioxide (TiO2) under UV-A irradiation. Bench scale experimental studies were conducted at different humic acid concentration at the range of 10–50 mg/L and different pH. Anatase and mixed-phase anatase–rutile TiO2 nano particles used in the photocatalytic reactor. The results were evaluated in terms of the parameters that are specific to organic matter content such as dissolved organic carbon concentration, ultraviolet absorbance at 254 nm (UV254), specific ultaviolet absorbance at 254 nm, and color (VIS400). It was observed that increasing humic acid concentration decreases photocatalytic degradation efficiency. The reactivity of the mixed-phase anatase–rutile (Degussa P-25) TiO2 was greater than individual anatase particles and the highest efficiency was observed at pH 3 for anatase TiO2.  相似文献

Sanitary landfills for Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) disposal have been identified as one of the most important anthropogenic sources of methane (CH4) emissions; in order to minimize its negative effects on the environment, landfill gas (LFG) recovery is a suitable tool to control CH4 emissions from a landfill site; further, the measurement of CH4 emissions can represent a good way to evaluate the effectiveness of LFG recovering systems. In general, LFG will escape through any faults in the landfill capping or in the LFG collection system. Indeed, some areas of the capping can be more permeable than others (e.g. portions of a side slope), especially when considering a temporarily capped zone (covered area that is not expected to receive any further waste for a period of at least 3 months, but for engineering reasons does not have a permanent cap yet). These areas, which are characterized by abnormal emissions, are usually defined as “features”: in particular, a feature is a small, discrete area or an installation where CH4 emissions significantly differ from the surrounding zones. In the present study, the influence that specific features have on CH4 emissions has been investigated, based on direct measurements carried out in different seasons by means of a flux chamber to the case study of Palermo (IT) landfill (Bellolampo). The results showed that the flux chamber method is reliable and easy to perform, and the contoured flux maps, obtained by processing the measured data were found to be a suitable tool for identifying areas with abnormal (high) emissions. Further, it was found that a relationship between methane emission rates and landfill side slope can be established. Concerning the influence of the temporary HDPE cover system on CH4 recovery efficiency, it contributed to a significant decrease of the free surface area available for uncontrolled emissions; this aspect, coupled to the increase of the CH4 volumes collected by the LFG recovery system, led to a significant increase of the recovery efficiency.  相似文献
