The composition of the diet of the deep-sea aristeid shrimp Aristeus antennatus (Risso, 1816) was determined based on the analysis of 1578 stomach contents. Samples were collected using bottom trawls during 1984 to 1989 along the deep continental slope (380 to 2266 m) in the Catalan Sea (Western Mediterranea). A. antennatus displayed a high feeding activity on a large variety of endobenthic and epibenthic invertebrates, whereas benthopelagic prey were supplementary to its diet. The shrimp's diet varied mainly as a function of depth. Various preferred prey items on the middle slope (Calocaris macandreae, Cirolana borealis, Abra longicallus) disappeared from its diet below 1300 m, coinciding with the transtion boundary between different taxocenoses in the Catalan Sea. Less mobile prey and inert remains (mainly pteropods) contributed a progressively larger share of the diet of Aristeus antennatus with increasing depth. The importance of seasonality in the changes in diet decreased with increasing depth, and was relatively high only in the upper middle slope (down to 1000 m depth), where two seasonal dietary groups were detected. The most distinct seasonal changes in diet were among benthopelagic prey. The diet of A. antennatus in the submarine canyons mainly consisted of endobenthic prey (large polychaetes, ophiuroids). The higher stomach-fullness values and less diversified diet in this area were probably related to high productivity in the submarine canyons.  相似文献

The crab community in the Ría de Arousa, North-West Spain, was studied for 2 yr (1974–1975; 1975–1976), firstly to detect any differences due to mussel (Mytilus edulis) raft aquaculture; secondly to study temporal changes in spatial distributions in beach, raft and non-raft areas throughout the ría. Portunid crabs dominated the fauna, the dominant species being Macropipus puber and M. depurator in the raft areas, M. depurator in non-raft subtidal areas, and M. arcuatus in beach stations. No substantial seasonal changes were observed in species composition throughout the ría. In general, the highest densities occurred in fall and winter. Raft stations showed the highest values of abundance, up to 0.47 individual per m2, and 8.20 g wet wt m-2. The food resource provided by the rich epifauna associated with the mussel rafts, and changes in the sediment due to shell deposits could account for the high density values in raft areas. Raft areas (polygons) cover about 10% of the surface of the Ría de Arousa and, thus, the raft aquaculture of mussels significantly increases crab production.  相似文献

Wave action is known to influence the abundance and distribution of intertidal organisms. Wave action will also determine the duration and suitability of various foraging windows (high-tide and low-tide, day and night) for predation and can also affect predator behaviour, both directly by impeding prey handling and indirectly by influencing prey abundance. It remains uncertain whether semi-terrestrial mobile predators such as crabs which can access intertidal prey during emersion when the effects of wave action are minimal, are influenced by exposure. Here, we assessed the effect of wave action on the abundance and population structure (size and gender) of the semi-terrestrial intertidal crab Pachygrapsus marmoratus on rocky shores in Portugal. The activity of P. marmoratus with the tidal cycle on sheltered and exposed shores was established using baited pots at high-tide to examine whether there was activity during intertidal immersion and by low-tide searches. Because prey abundance varies along a wave exposure gradient on most Portuguese shores and because morphology of crab chelipeds are known to be related to diet composition, we further tested the hypothesis that predator stomach contents reflected differences in prey abundance along the horizontal gradient in wave exposure and that this would be correlated with the crab cheliped morphology. Thus, we examined phenotypic variation in P. marmoratus chelipeds across shores of differing exposure to wave action. P. marmoratus was only active during low-tide. Patterns of abundance and population structure of crabs did not vary with exposure to wave action. Stomach contents, however, varied significantly between shores of differing exposure with a higher consumption of hard-shelled prey (mussels) on exposed locations, where this type of prey is more abundant, and a higher consumption of barnacles on sheltered shores. Multivariate geometric analysis of crab claws showed that claws were significantly larger on exposed shores. There was a significant correlation between animals with larger claws and the abundance of mussels in their stomach. Variation in cheliped size may have resulted from differing food availability on sheltered and exposed shores.  相似文献

In order to assess diet composition and niche breadth of this species, we analysed the stomach content of 182 specimens collected monthly along the eastern coast of Sicily (Central Mediterranean Sea). Overall, 50 prey taxa belonging to five major groups (algae, gastropods, crustaceans, polychaetes, fishes) were identified in 102 full stomachs. Benthic or epibenthic crustaceans, such as decapods, amphipods and isopods were the most important prey, whereas algae, gastropods, polychaetes and fishes were only occasionally ingested. In terms of composition by species, the diet of Scorpaena maderensis was characterized by a variety of rare or unimportant prey, which was consumed by few individuals only, although sometimes in large amount. As a result, S. maderensis can be considered a generalized and opportunistic feeder. The feeding intensity followed roughly a seasonal trend, with a minimum food intake in summer. The individual fish size was the most important factor affecting diet. According to the observed ontogenetic shift, small-sized individuals fed primarily on small crustaceans (i.e. amphipods and isopods), whereas large-sized specimens consumed preferably bigger and more vagile prey, such as walking and swimming decapods. No significant differences in diet were observed in relation to sex of predator and sampling season.  相似文献

Linuparus trigonus (Palinuridae) was collected from northeast Australia at depths of 220 to 300 m in the austral summer of 1985–1986 and its diet was analysed for diel feeding-periodicity and composition. The sex and size of the lobsters and the depth at which they were caught were recorded. About 35% of the foreguts were less than 10% full. L. trigonus appears to be a predator of slow-moving or nearsessile benthic invertebrates; its diet is mainly bivalves, gastropods, ophiuroids, crustaceans, polychaetes, and foraminiferans. Most dietary items differed significantly between the size classes of lobster. The frequency of crustacean remains increased with depth and more gastropods were consumed by lobsters caught at 260 m than at other depths. No significant periodicity in feeding was found for L. trigonus. The foreguts of three Metanephrops spp. (Nephropidae) collected from north-west Australia in August 1983 (M. andamanicus) and January/February 1984 (M. australiensis and M. boschmai) were nearly empty, and nearly half were less than 10% full. Fish, crustaceans and squids were the most common food items eaten. The main food items varied between the species: M. andamanicus ate nearly equal amounts of fish and crustaceans; M. australiensis ate chiefly crustaceans; M. boschmai mainly ate fish and seldom fed on squid. The natural feeding of 485 Octopus mimus (164 to 3088 g) was studied in relation to the species' life cycle and environmental seasonal variations off the north of Chile from autumn 1991 to summer 1992. Analysis of digestive-tract contents revealed that O. mimus preyed upon 25 different prey items belonging to five zoological groups (Teleostei, Mollusca, Crustacea, Echinodermata and Polychaeta). Cannibalism was only occasional. The results indicate that the diet and food intake of this species are significantly affected by sex and maturation. Senescent individuals ingest a small amount of food, and their diet is mainly based on small, not very motile prey. The food intake, expressed as body weight, of non-senescent individuals is higher in females than in males. Seasonal changes in sea-water temperature seem to be followed by adjustments in food intake. Like other Octopus species, O. mimus appears to be an opportunistic predator.  相似文献

Daily and seasonal changes in dietary habits, resource partitioning and daily food consumption of Coelorhynchus coelorhynchus, Hymenocephalus italicus and Nezumia sclerorhynchus, the three dominant macrourids coexisting at mid-slope depths (between 473 and 603 m) in the eastern Ionian Sea, were analysed. The three species showed very diverse diets, based mainly on suprabenthic prey and infauna. Day–night changes in the diet and feeding intensity were more apparent in H. italicus and N. sclerorhynchus, preying mainly on mobile prey (suprabenthos), than for C. coelorhynchus that preyed largely on infauna. Dietary overlap was very low among species. The highest daily ration (DR) obtained for N. sclerorhynchus (in April) coincided with maximum concentration of its preferred prey (i.e. Boreomysis arctica). H. italicus, displaying a more pelagic diet than N. sclerorhynchus, showed higher DR (between 1.47–1.51%wetW and 0.47–0.71%wetW, respectively) probably due to higher metabolic activity because it may swim up in the water column to eat. C. coelorhynchus, having the most benthic diet, showed the highest DR (between 2.92 and 2.53%wetW). This rather unexpected high DR would be attributable to a continuous feeding on more uniformly distributed prey (benthos) and to a high rooting activity on the sediment in search of infauna. The influence of the type of resources exploited in the overall trends obtained in the diet of macrourids is discussed and compared with those of other deep-sea species. As a general conclusion, results suggest that food consumption of bathyal fish are probably influenced by or coupled with the type of resources exploited.  相似文献

Larval ascaridoid nematodes were surveyed in three flatfish species, Hippoglossoides platessoides, Pleuronectes ferrugineus, and P. americanus, from Sable Island Bank in February and June 1989. Pseudoterranova decipiens (sealworm) abundances differed significantly with both host species, the heaviest levels being found in H. platessoides, and host length, infections generally increasing with length, but not between February and June samples. Moderate numbers of larvae were found in P. ferrugineus while P. americanus were seldom infected. Two third-stage P. decipiens larvae (L3), 3.2 and 7.0 mm in length, were recovered from the cephalothoraxes of two Mysis mixta in H. platessoides stomachs while five L3's (2.8 to 8.7 mm in length) were found among food (polychaetes, cumaceans, tanaids, amphipods) in the stomach of a P. ferrugineus. Levels of P. decipiens infection appear to be directly related to consumption of suprabenthic prey, which commonly occur in the diet of H. platessoides but are exploited less frequently by P. ferrugineus and rarely by P. americanus.  相似文献

Diel activity rhythms of the prawn Palaemon xiphias Risso, 1818 from Alfacs Bay, Ebro Delta, were studied by time-lapse videorecordings. Activity displayed an endogenous circadian rhythm, with maximum activity at night. Feeding habits were studied by frequency of occurrence and by the points method. The food of P. xiphias consisted mainly of crustaceans; the remains of amphipods, isopods, mysids, copepods, decapods and ostracods were identified. The remaining items consisted of molluscs, polychaetes, ophiuroids, plant material, sand, and unidentified organic debris. The results indicate that P. xiphias is a predator of benthic invertebrates rather than a scavenger or detritus feeder. Diet composition changes with increasing size of the prawn.  相似文献

Data on the diet, feeding habits and daily rations of Hoplostethus mediterraneus Cuvier, 1829 in the bathyal eastern Ionian Sea (Mediterranean Sea) are presented. A total of 430 specimens collected by bottom trawls at depths ranging from 473 to 603 m during four 24-h day–night sampling cycles covering the four annual seasons was examined. H. mediterraneus diet consisted of pelagic and vagile epibenthic prey, mainly crustaceans, and was dominated by benthopelagic natantian decapods (83.35% IRI, index of relative importance). Seasonal changes in diet were apparent and related to seasonal fluctuations in suprabenthic and zooplanktonic prey in the environment. Diel patterns in stomach fullness and trends in diel feeding cycles are discussed in relation to the vertical migratory movements of available prey (i.e. suprabenthos and zooplankton). Daily-ration estimates were determined by evacuation-rate models and ranged from 0.143% to 0.397% WW/WW. Overall, daily-ration estimates were within the range of the daily consumption of other deep-sea fish. Deduced from diet contents, we found a constant gross energy intake (305–316 kcal g–1) during all seasons. As a possible response to the reproductive peak of mature females observed in summer, H. mediterraneus increases its food consumption, which, in turn, is coupled with an increase in food availability.Communicated by S.A. Hexaplex trunculus is one of the most widespread Mediterranean species of muricid gastropod and lives on rocky, sandy-mud and mud substrata. Although common in the Adriatic Sea, relatively little is known about its ecology especially feeding behaviour. The aim of this study was to explore the aspects of the feeding behaviour of H. trunculus using Arca noae, Modiolus barbatus and Mytilus galloprovincialis as experimental prey. Prey species preference, predator size, prey size choice, feeding rates, handling times and mode and place of attack were analysed. Typically, only M. galloprovincialis was attacked: A. noae rarely at the byssal gape and M. barbatus never. Small (40 mm) H. trunculus could not easily attack large M. galloprovincialis (65 mm) and preferred small (20 mm) and medium (35 mm) sized prey. Conversely, medium (55 mm) and large (70 mm) H. trunculus fed randomly on M. galloprovincialis of all three sizes. The feeding strategy adopted by H. trunculus individuals varied with respect to size. A tendency to drill the prey shell was recorded for small predators, whereas marginal chipping was adopted more frequently by large individuals. On average small, medium and large H. trunculus consumed 2.4±1.6 (range 0–4), 1.2±1.6 (range 0–4) and 2.0±2.1 (range 0–6) M. galloprovincialis, respectively. There was a statistically significant difference in prey-handling time with respect to the method of access adopted, predator and prey sizes. The time required to access a M. galloprovincialis individual by marginal chipping was considerably less than that required for drilling. H. trunculus consumed an average of 0.60±0.80 g M. galloprovincialis tissue dry weight over a 5-week period, that is, ~40% of its own tissue body weight. This translates to an average-sized (55 mm shell height) H. trunculus consuming ~18 M. galloprovincialis of 50 mm shell length (minimum marketable size) per year. H. trunculus showed no preference to drill either the left or right valves of M. galloprovincialis but generally attacked the posterior shell margin.  相似文献

Large numbers of Lithodes murrayi collected by traps and trawls during Cruise MD.03 (1974) of M.S. Marion-Dufresne around Crozet Islands, have been studied, and comparisons made with other species of lithodid crabs. After statistical analysis of data relative to some body parts of males and females, and calculation of length-weight relationships, various aspects of reproduction are discussed: size at sexual maturity, size distribution of females in relation to their reproductive condition, fecundity (which is shown to be low), and egg-size variations. Analysis of the diet revealed a great diversity of prey, including algae, as well as necrophagous and other opportunistic tendencies, which are comparable with similar results obtained for the king crab Paralithodes camtschatica. Four groups of parasites or associated animals have been recorded for the first time from L. murrayi: rhizocephalans (acting as castrating agents), isopods, hydroids and polychaetes (spirorbs). Finally, the prospects of successful commercial fishing of L. murrayi are briefly discussed.  相似文献

Bottom trawl estimates of densities of the portunid crab Liocarcinus depurator along the Mediterranean coast of Spain from 1994 to 2003, covering a depth range of 50–800 m, were analysed using non-linear geostatistical techniques. The variation of the spatial distribution was modelled through variogram analysis using depth as a covariate. Patch size ranged from 20 to 75 km. Crab density showed a general decrease from 1994 to 2003. L. depurator high-density areas were characterised as either occasional or permanent (always present every year). High-density patches appeared to be associated with either upwelling or strong river influence, i.e. the Western Alborán Sea and the Ebro Delta. The application of non-linear geostatistical techniques proved useful in identifying permanent high-density population patches, thereby highlighting regions of special interest for the ecology of the species.  相似文献

This study examines the feeding habits of Paromola cuvieri (Risso, 1816) and Geryon longipes A. Milne Edwards, 1881, the only two common deep-sea brachyuran crabs inhabiting the bathyal mud assemblages in the Catalan Sea (Western Mediterranean). Samples were obtained by bottom trawls at depths between 360 and 1871 m during 1983 to 1992. Both species had highly diverse diets, but very low feeding activity, as reflected by the high proportion of empty stomachs. Both characteristics may be important factors enabling deepsea crabs to adapt to bathyal zones, where trophic resources are scarce. The most important food items found in P. cuvieri were fish remains (teleost, sharks) and benthic decapods (Monodaeus couchii, Munida tenuimana). Scavenging activity plays an important role in this species. The diet of G. longipes included a broad range of benthic invertebrates. In the upper middle slope, the bivalve Abra longicallus, decapods (Calocaris macandreae and Monodaeus couchii), echinoderms and polychaetes were the dominant prey, with epibenthic peracarids as a secondary resource. On the lower middle slope, the incidence of decapod crustaceans (C. macandreae, Pontiphilus norvegicus) and peracarids in the diet declined. Small macrobenthic prey (glycerids, cumaceans or amphipods) were rare in the diet of both species, in accordance with the large size of the crab specimens studied. The absence of preferred prey items and the lack of food items of an optimum size on the lower slope may contribute to the progressive decline in abundance of P. cuvieri and G. longipes with increasing depth.  相似文献

A community of decapod crustaceans (Brachyura) was sampled seasonally (October 1978–July 1979) from three habitats (raft, middle and beach) in the Ría de Muros e Noia (North-West Spain), with the purpose of studying spatial and temporal changes in the community and comparing with communities in the neighbouring Ría de Arousa, which supports an intense mussel (Mytilus edulis)-raft culture. The Portunidae family dominated the decapod community. Polybius henslowi, a species with pelagic stages, which enters the rías periodically in large numbers, was the dominant species at all the stations throughout the sampling period, attaining densities of 1.6 individuals m-2 (18.7 g wet wt m-2) in summer. Macropipus depurator and M. puber were the next most important species at the raft station, M. depurator at middle stations, and M. vernalis and Carcinus maenas at beach stations. The highest population densities were recorded in summer, due to the great abundance of Polybius henslowi at this time. When the data were reconsidered omitting p. henslowi, highest densities were in autumn and winter in the inner ría. In general, the nature of the substratum, the presence of mussel rafts, depth and salinity were the main factors determining the structure of the community. Density and biomass in the Ría de Muros e Noia (P. henslowi omitted) were lower than in the Ría de Arousa (up to six times lower in some areas). The Ría de Muros lacks the extensive number of mussel rafts present in the Ría de Arousa which constitute an important food resource for decapods.  相似文献

We investigated feeding by the hogchoker, Trinectes maculatus (Bloch and Schneider), in freshwater, oligohaline, mesohaline, and polyhaline regions of Chesapeake Bay, USA, and examined prey selection in relation to food availability. Otter trawling for fish and Van Veen grab sampling for benthic macrofauna occurred in July and August 1992 and August and September 1993. Hogchokers exhibited both opportunistic and selective feeding patterns along the estuarine salinity gradient in four tributaries (Potomac, Rappahannock, York, and James Rivers) and in the mainstem Chesapeake Bay. Major prey taxa included annelids, arthropods, and tellinid siphons. In polyhaline habitat, polychaetes dominated both the benthos and gut contents numerically and gravimetrically. On the other hand, oligochaetes were numerically dominant in freshwater/oligohaline areas but were rarely eaten, perhaps because of their burial depth. Arthropods (mostly amphipods) occurred at most salinities, were common in gut contents in low-salinity areas, and were replaced as prey by larger proportions of polychaetes in polyhaline regimes. Although hogchokers ate tellinid siphons, they rarely consumed whole bivalves or gastropods. These diet patterns (and especially the importance of siphon nipping) are similar to those of juvenile or small flatfish elsewhere in Europe, Africa, and North America. A size–salinity relationship for hogchokers occurred along the summer salinity gradient, with smaller fish predominating upstream and larger fish downstream. It was not clear from our data if variation in diet composition reflected changes in prey composition along the salinity gradient rather than changes in fish size. We sampled the communities of decapod crustaceans inhabiting the depth zone between 3 and 871 m off the Catalan coast (North-West Mediterranean) from June 1981 to June 1983. The 185 samples comprised 90 species differing widely in their depth distributions. Multivariate analysis revealed four distinct faunistic assemblages, (1) littoral communities over sandy bottoms, (2) shelf communities over terrigenous muds, (3) upper-slope communitics, and (4) lower-slope or bathyal communities. The brachyuran crab Liocarcinus depurator is the most abundant species of the shelf assemblage, although L. vernalis dominates over the shallow sandy bottoms of the shelf. The dominant species of the upper-slope assemblage are nektobenthic species (Solenocera membranacea, Plesionika heterocarpus, Processa canaliculata), pelagic species (Pasiphaea sivado, Sergestes arcticus), and benthic species (Macropipus tuberculatus, Munida intermedia, Nephrops norvegicus). Aristeus antennatus comprise most of the biomass of the lower-slope community, which supports a greater diversity than the other assemblages. The main assemblages appear to be related to different hydrological characteristics, the extent of seasonal fluctuations, and to the changes in sediment structure associated with changes in the steepness of the bottom.  相似文献

Feeding habits of the four most abundant deep-sea demersal trawl-caught macrourids on Chatham Rise, New Zealand, were examined from stomach contents. Two species were predominantly benthic foragers: Coelorinchus bollonsi on infaunal and epifaunal polychaetes, and C. aspercephalus on epifaunal crustaceans; and two species were predominantly mesopelagic foragers; C. oliverianus on calanoid copepods, and Lepidorhynchus denticulatus on mesopelagic crustaceans. The most important predictors of diet variability were identified using distance-based linear models and included areal predictors in all four species, fish size in C. aspercephalus, C. bollonsi and L. denticulatus, and sample year in C. bollonsi. Cluster analyses showed that the diets of C. aspercephalus and C. bollonsi were most distinct. There was a greater interspecific similarity in diet in the spatial and fish size subgroups of C. oliverianus and L. denticulatus, than at the species level. Failing to account for areal, temporal, and ontogenetic variability in diets may bias evaluations of resource competition.  相似文献

The maintenance of a uniform diet for Carcinus maenas (L.), where this crab is used as test animal in the laboratory, precludes the use of fresh food, e. g. mussels, for many reasons; not the least of these is the seasonal variation in the nutritive value of such food. Different types of fresh food are variably accepted by C. maenas, dependent on such factors as taste and the consistency of the food. The crabs will eat freeze-dried food set in agar-agar. A diet of this food is, however, inferior to one of fresh food as its preparation destroys essential substances and storage causes aging. In order to eliminate these disadvantages, a better quality artificial diet was developed, one which nevertheless does not attain the quality of fresh food. This diet can be further improved by varying the proportions of the individual constitutents.  相似文献
