In the laboratory, Balanus balanoides (L.) barnacles maintained without food at 5°C over the winter to summer period remained cold-tolerant. Winter animals maintained at 5°C and fed Artemia nauplii under a controlled light-dark regime until mid-summer lost this cold-tolerance. Summer animals, maintained without food at 5° or 15°C until midwinter, became cold-tolerant. Summer and winter animals subjected to increased (or decreased) ambient salinity for 48 h showed a small decrease (or increase) in their lower median lethal temperature (MLT—defined as the temperature at which 50% of the animals die after 18 h exposure to air). Summer animals subjected to desiccation for 48 h also showed a small decrease in their lower MLT. It is concluded that the seasonal changes in cold-tolerance of adult barnacles are probably induced by a combination of environmental factors including food availability, light intensity, day-length and changes in ambient sea-water temperatures. Development of cold-tolerance in the winter did not depend upon fertilisation. Changes in intra-cellular solute concentration which accompany adaptation to changes in ambient salinity or desiccation do not appear to be related to the seasonal changes in cold-tolerance.  相似文献

Desiccation as a factor in the intertidal zonation of barnacles   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Four species of balanomorph barnacles, Balanus crenatus Brugière, B. balanoides (L.), Elminius modestus Darwin and Chthamalus stellatus (Poli), were studied to assess the susceptibility of intertidal barnacle species to desiccation. Known sized samples of barnacles were exposed to controlled desiccating conditions and subsequent survival and water loss were determined. It is clear that the ability to live high on the shore is dependent on a reduction of the overall permeability to water loss. Because of greater surface area to volume ratios, small stages are particularly prone to desiccation. In normal intertidal emersion periods, small stages of B. crenatus particularly, and also of B. balanoides and E. modestus which are similar in their desiccation resistance, would be susceptible to desiccation at normal temperatures and low humidities. Large barnacles would be more prone to death from high temperatures when the tide is out. The spat of C. stellatus, although surviving much longer than spat of larger dimensions of the other species, must also be prone to prolonged emersion conditions at high shore levels.  相似文献

Environmental control of the breeding of three boreo-arctic cirripedes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Three species of barnacles with boreo-aretic distribution were shown to require maintenance for several weeks below a critical temperature before the breeding condition could be attained. The temperatures critical for Balanus balanoides (L.) Balanus balanus (L.) and Balanus crenatus (Bruguière) were found to be between 10° and 12°C, 10° and 14°C, and at about 17°C, respectively. Although the strong influence of continuous light and the weak influence of continued feeding in delaying the onset of breeding in B. balanoides were confirmed, there remained some outstanding anomalies between the breeding behaviour of this species under laboratory conditions and between the tide marks. It was found impossible to initiate breeding by the application of conditioning procedures significantly in advance of the time of the normal Autumn breeding season in B. balanoides. Breeding appears to be inhibited, independently of external conditions, for a set period after the preceding brood cycle. Evidence points to a similar, largely endogenous, control of breeding in B. balanus which also breeds once annually, but not in B. crenatus which breeds continuously so long as food and temperature levels permit.  相似文献

Tolerance of high temperatures by some intertidal barnacles   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The median lethal times of survival of the barnacles Elminius modestus, Balanus crenatus and B. balanoides, when continuously submerged at high temperatures, were determined for individuals collected in the summer and winter. In E. modestus and B. crenatus there was no seasonal change in high temperature tolerance. In B. balanoides, however, the adults were more susceptible in the winter than in the summer to temperatures a little below the upper lethal temperature. Using less comprehensive data for other British species of barnacles, it is concluded that, in general, the order of tolerance to high temperatures corresponds to the order of temperatures within the geographical and the intertidal distributions of the species. From the time-temperature-survival curves, intertidal barnacles are living closer to environmental temperatures than would be supposed on the basis of the measurement of the upper lethal temperature, which has been commonly measured for many species, but is of less ecological significance.  相似文献

Urosalpinx cinerea (Say), accustomed to feeding on Balanus balanoides, were strongly attracted in a choice chamber by the effluents of B. balanoides and B. eburneus, were indifferent to the effluents of Crassostrea virginica, Crepidula fornicata and Mytilus edulis, and responded negatively to the effluent of their own species. Oyster drills from a population feeding on Crassostrea virginica were attracted to oyster effluent; when these snails were offered a choice between Crassostrea virginica and B. balanoides effluents, they responded in equal numbers to the two effluents. Concentrations of NH4Cl-ammonia in the range 18.2 to 73.3 mol did not attract the snails, and their responses to animal effluents were not correlated with the ammonia and amino-acid concentrations of the effluents, which ranged from 11.8 to 21.0 mol. It is argued that these results deny ammonia the role of a nonspecific distance attractant. Confined separately with various potential prey species, Urosalpinx drilled Balanus balanoides, B. eburneus, Crassostrea virginica, Crepidula fornicata, C. plana, Mercenaria mercenaria, Modiolus demissus, Mya arenaria, Mytilus edulis, Spisula solidissima, and Yoldia limatula, but not Anomia simplex. The prey species that were the least attractive in running water were generally rendered attractive and subject to attack in standing water. Freshly shucked Crepidula fornicata shells were scarcely drilled unless continuously perfused by C. fornicata effluent, and then only in small numbers. Altering the texture of living C. fornicata shells by wrapping them in nylon netting, by polishing, or by roughening, did not make them immune to drilling. Oyster drills in contact with C. fornicata attacked only if they received the effluent of the living prey, proving that tactile stimuli alone are not adequate to induce drilling.  相似文献

Oxygen levels were monitored within the mantle cavities of three barnacle species ( Chthamalus stellatus, Semibalanus balanoides, Elminius modestus), using optode microsensors. Conditions were always hypoxic, even when barnacles were actively using the prosoma and cirri to pump aerated seawater into the mantle cavity. Mantle fluid oxygen concentrations were extremely variable; behaviour and oxygen concentrations were not closely coupled. Ventilation of the mantle cavity depended partially on external water flow, with higher and more stable mantle fluid oxygen concentrations being sustained when the water around barnacles was agitated. During emersion, barnacles initially pumped seawater between the mantle cavity and the cone above the opercular plates to achieve ventilation. As water was lost it was replaced by air bubbles, eventually resulting in an air-filled mantle cavity. In S. balanoides and E. modestus, once the mantle cavity was filled with air, the barnacle usually used up the oxygen within the bubble within 2–3 h and did not regain oxic conditions until the barnacle was reimmersed in seawater. In C. stellatus, the air bubble was repeatedly refreshed for many hours by pneumostome formation. In response to low environmental salinity, all three species closed the opercular plates firmly and rapidly used up oxygen within the mantle fluid.  相似文献

Metamorphosis and early juvenile development was followed in the laboratory in Balanus amphitrite and B. improvisus (family Balanidae) and in Semibalanus balanoides and Elminius modestus (family Archaeobalanidae) from cyprid settlement until 24 h after ecdysis. Stages of development were studied in vivo and with scanning electron microscopy. Events in metamorphosis and early juvenile development are very similar in all four species and can be interpreted in terms of a highly modified moult. Notably, there was no indication whatsoever of the amorphous decorticated settler previously described from metamorphosis of B. amphitrite. The shape of a juvenile barnacle with cirri and incipient shell plates is apparent immediately after the shedding of the cypris carapace, and rudimentary peduncle can be distinguished below the developing wall plates. A basal row of cuticular hairs encircles the peduncle in all species except S. balanoides. These hairs seem to serve a restraining function during early development, when the juvenile barnacle is only attached by the initially secreted cyprid cement. Similarly situated hairs are also present in very young juveniles of the lepadomorph Scalpellum scalpellum. In Semibalanus balanoides nothing indicates that the rostrum originates from the fusion of two latera as previously claimed, since this plate is single as soon as it can be distinguished.  相似文献

High intertidal community organization on a rocky headland in Maine,USA   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
A mosaic patchwork of the barnacle Balanus balanoides L., the mussel Mytilus edulis L., and the alga Fucus vesiculosus L. was found in the transitional region between the mid and high intertidal zones on a rocky headland on Mount Desert Island, Maine, USA. The development of the mosaic was observed by following recruitment and survival of B. balanoides in denuded patches located at the same tidal level along a 60 m stretch of shore. Barnacle recruitment was least under canopies of F. vesiculosus and greatest in open areas kept moist at low tide by surf. Barnacle survival after settlement was least under the F. vesiculosus canopy due to the whiplash effect of the algal fronds in the surf and greatest in open areas free from competition from mussels. In open areas, early mortality was correlated with settlement density. In areas of dense settlement (60 spat cm-2) up to 90% mortality resulted within 5 months from crowding associated with growth. In older individuals crowding produced hummocks of elongated, weakly attached barnacles which were more prone to removal by surf than uncrowded barnacles. Mussels exerted competitive dominance over barnacles for space and the presence of mussel beds prevented further barnacle recruitment. Mussels suffered extensive mortality during winter storms when surf removed dense mats of weakly attached mussels. The patchy distribution of mussels and barnacles results from irregular rock substrata producing numerous environmental patches with respect to wave exposure and drainage at low tide, and from densitydependent mortality of both mussels and barnacles which creates patches of new colonizable space within each environmental patch.  相似文献

The phototactic response of the nauplius larva of Balanus balanoides, B. crenatus and Elminius modestus shows darkadaptation; the response of the cyprid of B. balanoides shows both phototaxis and low photokinesis. The phototactic responses and the orientation of the cyprid to white light at settlement require an intensity of illumination slightly above 10-5 lux. The ability to select a shaded position by cyprids of R. balanoides requires a higher intensity of 10-2 to 10-4 lux; hence a different mechanism may be involved. Barnacle larvae are sufficiently sensitive to be able to respond to light beneath the sea surface, even on cloudy, moonless nights.  相似文献

Ocean acidification and global warming are occurring concomitantly, yet few studies have investigated how organisms will respond to increases in both temperature and CO2. Intertidal microcosms were used to examine growth, shell mineralogy and survival of two intertidal barnacle post-larvae, Semibalanus balanoides and Elminius modestus, at two temperatures (14 and 19°C) and two CO2 concentrations (380 and 1,000 ppm), fed with a mixed diatom-flagellate diet at 15,000 cells ml−1 with flow rate of 10 ml−1 min−1. Control growth rates, using operculum diameter, were 14 ± 8 μm day−1 and 6 ± 2 μm day−1 for S. balanoides and E. modestus, respectively. Subtle, but significant decreases in E. modestus growth rate were observed in high CO2 but there were no impacts on shell calcium content and survival by either elevated temperature or CO2. S. balanoides exhibited no clear alterations in growth rate but did show a large reduction in shell calcium content and survival under elevated temperature and CO2. These results suggest that a decrease by 0.4 pH(NBS) units alone would not be sufficient to directly impact the survival of barnacles during the first month post-settlement. However, in conjunction with a 4–5°C increase in temperature, it appears that significant changes to the biology of these organisms will ensue.  相似文献

Sodium cyanide (NaCN) was used to partially uncouple respiration and photosynthesis in the symbiotic sea anemone Condylactis gigantea. NaCN significantly increased the ratio of gross photosynthesis to respiration in both intact tentacles and isolated zooxanthellae (Symbiodinium microadriaticum), increased carbon translocation from 17.7±3.5% of total fixed in controls to 43.5±5.8%, and doubled the amount of photosynthetically fixed carbon accumulating in the coelenterate host over that in controls. Only 2% of the non-particulate radioactivity recovered in the host tissue was 14C-glycerol when uninhibited symbiotic tentacles were incubated in 14C-bicarbonate for 1 h. At 10-5 M NaCN, approximately 25% of the host nonparticulate radioactivity was recovered as 14C-glycerol, the absolute concentration of glycerol in the host tissue was three times higher than in controls, and 14C-glycerol was found in the medium. While glycerol has been proposed to play a major role in the translocation of photosynthetically fixed carbon from zooxanthellae to their coelenterate hosts, its concentration has never been measured in the animal and algal components of the symbiosis. The isolated zooxanthellae contained 3.62±0.33 mM glycerol, 26x the 0.141±0.02 mM found in the anemone. Aposymbiotic anemone tissue contained 0.169±0.06 mM glycerol. The rate of glycerol mineralization was not saturated even when exogenous glycerol levels were 70x internal concentrations. These data show that respiration and photosynthesis in symbiotic associations may be partially uncoupled by NaCN, and that this uncoupling allows the verification of the translocation and rapid catabolism of glycerol within the host.  相似文献

Two types of secretory cell have been found in the cement glands of the cypris larva of Balanus balanoides (L.). Histochemical tests show the presence of proteins, phenols and the enzyme polyphenol oxidase in both the glands and secreted cement. It is proposed that cyprid cement is composed of tanned protein, all the components of which are derived from the cement glands.  相似文献

In the free-swimming cypris larva of Balanus balanoides, the mean level of triacylglycerols (triglycerides) was 8% of the ash-free dry weight. During metamorphosis into the juvenile barnacle, the triacylglycerol level in the newly settled non-feeding cypris larva fell to a mean of 2% of the ash-free dry weight. The ratio of fatty acids in the triacylglycerols remained constant throughout metamorphosis, indicating that all species of fatty acids were used as energy sources. There was no evidence for the selective utilisation of particular fatty acids.  相似文献

Wave action and low population density can strongly reduce the ability of sessile acorn barnacles to find mates and copulate. For Semibalanus balanoides, penis morphology varies with wave exposure and with characteristics of the mating neighborhood. Field experiments were conducted at five intertidal sites on Long Island, New York, USA from July to December 2005 to determine how wave exposure and aggregation structure influence the length, diameter, mass, and number of annulated folds of the penis. Sparsely crowded barnacles had more annulations in the penis and are inferred to have greater ability to stretch. At higher wave exposure, the diameter of the penis was greater, but the mass was not. This study identifies density of crowding as the most important cue that barnacles respond to when perceiving their mating group and details how penis morphology varies in response to wave exposure.  相似文献

The effects of fluctuating salinity on the mortality of newly released nauplii of three species of barnacle, Elminius modestus (Darwin), Balanus balanoides (L) and B. hameri (Ascanius) have been measured. The larvae were exposed to three different types of salinity regime; in all cases, a regime which fluctuated gently between full-strength sea water and a reduced concentration was found to be least damaging. The contributions of the abruptness of salinity shock, and the degree of exposure to reduce salinity, are considered as factors influencing mortality. Survival depends upon the interaction of both these factors, but the abruptness of the shock which the barnacles receive is of major importance in determining their survival range.  相似文献

The surface morphology of the antennular attachment disc of the cypris larva of Balanus balanoides has been investigated by scanning electron microscopy, and its function is considered in the context of settlent behaviour. It is concluded that the attachment organ acts as an adhesive pad for temporary attachment while the larva explores the substratum. The surface of the disc is covered with villi, which could retain an adhesive substance thought to be produced by the antennular glands. The open-ended hair of the axial sense organ on the disc is shown.  相似文献

Symbiotic dinoflagellate algae (Symbiodinium sp.) isolated from the scleractinian coral Plesiastrea versipora and incubated in homogenized host tissue released 4 to 7 times as much glycerol (14 to 46 nmol glycerol/106 algae) as those incubated in seawater (3 to 6 nmol glycerol/106 algae) after 4 h incubation in the light. During this period, no release of triglycerides was detected. Intracellular glycerol increased 2- to 3-fold in algae incubated in host homogenate, but remained unchanged in algae incubated in seawater at a concentration of 0.82 ± 0.47 nmol glycerol/106 algae. In each incubation condition, intracellular triglyceride levels increased. However, in algae incubated in host homogenate, the intracellular levels of triglycerides reached only about 75% of the amount reached in algae incubated in seawater (max. 18.55 ± 2.40 nmol glycerol/106 cells). Host homogenate did not stimulate the release of glycerol from algae during dark incubation. These data show that the glycerol released by algae incubated in host-tissue homogenate was derived from increased synthesis of glycerol or from diversion of some glycerol or other photosynthetic intermediates from incorporation into algal triglyceride stores, and did not come from existing stores. The chemical composition of inorganic granules found in parenchyma cells surrounding the midgut of adult Balanus balanoides (L.) was determined. X-ray microanalysis indicated the presence of magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, iron and zinc in the granules. A quantitative analysis of granule-rich pellets isolated from the midguts of adult barnacles showed that the granules were composed mainly of zinc phosphate, the remaining elements being minor constituents only.  相似文献

The acorn barnacle, Semibalanus balanoides, is thought to release larvae in response to phytoplankton blooms, but there is evidence that another, unidentified cue for release may exist. We conducted high-frequency sampling in Little Harbor, Massachusetts, USA, to determine whether early-stage larval abundance was related to several environmental variables, and to characterize vertical distributions of the larvae. Larval concentrations peaked at 2.52 and 1.02 individuals l−1 during two storms. Larvae were more abundant near the surface than near the bottom. We suggest the hypothesis that turbid conditions and upward-swimming behavior may protect newly-released larvae from predation and cannibalism. Future studies should test this hypothesis with barnacles and other invertebrates.  相似文献

The shell composition of 5 species of barnacles [Balanus balanoides (L.), B. crenatus Bruguière, B. hameri Ascanius, Elminius modestus Darwin and Chthamalus stellatus (Poli)] collected from four different sites on the coast of North Wales and one site in the Irish Sea were studied using chemical, X-ray diffraction and electron-microprobe analyses. All the shells consisted of calcite. The trace substances studied were Mg, Sr, Na, Mn, PO4, and SO4. Other trace elements detected included Si, Li, Ba, Zn, Cl, and Al. For each species, Mn was the only element in the shell which varied significantly from one locality to another. Variation of concentration of Mn in the shells may be related to the variations of the concentration of Mn in the water, since concentrations in the shells were highest in (estuarine) waters containing high concentrations of Mn. In Balanus balanoides L. and Elminius modestus Darwin, the Mn:Ca and Mg:Ca ratios decreased with decreasing shore level and Sr:Ca varied in the opposite direction. When B. crenatus Bruguière, a subtidal and lower littoral species, and B. hameri Ascanius, a Continental-Shelf species, were compared with the intertidal, species B. balanoides and E. modestus, the Mn:Ca and Mg:Ca ratios followed the same decreasing trend, and the Sr:Ca ratios the same increasing trend with increasing depth. These variations may be related either to increased growth rate of the shells of each species or maxium temperature to which the species is exposed, or both. The differences between species are more consistently reflected, in the concentration of Mn. However, since the concentration, of Mn is correlated with the amount of organic matter in the shell, the specific variations may reflect only the variations in the amount of organic material in the shell of each species.  相似文献
