Sex- and age-class-specific survival probabilities of a southern Great Barrier Reef green sea turtle population were estimated using a capture–mark–recapture (CMR) study and a Cormack–Jolly–Seber (CJS) modelling approach. The CMR history profiles for 954 individual turtles tagged over a 9-year period (1984–1992) were classified into three age classes (adult, subadult, juvenile) based on somatic growth and reproductive traits. Reduced-parameter CJS models, accounting for constant survival and time-specific recapture, fitted best for all age classes. There were no significant sex-specific differences in either survival or recapture probabilities for any age class. Mean annual adult survival was estimated at 0.9482 (95% CI: 0.92–0.98) and was significantly higher than survival for either subadults or juveniles. Mean annual subadult survival was 0.8474 (95% CI: 0.79–0.91), which was not significantly different from mean annual juvenile survival estimated at 0.8804 (95% CI: 0.84–0.93). The time-specific adult recapture probabilities were a function of sampling effort but this was not the case for either juveniles or subadults. The sampling effort effect was accounted for explicitly in the estimation of adult survival and recapture probabilities. These are the first comprehensive sex- and age-class-specific survival and recapture probability estimates for a green sea turtle population derived from a long-term CMR program.Communicated by M.S. Locomotion performance plays a vital role in determining hatchling green turtle Chelonia mydas survival in the first few hours after emerging from their nests as hatchlings crawl and swim the gauntlet of predators before reaching the relative safety of the open ocean. Previous laboratory based constant incubation experiments found incubation temperature to influence the size and swimming performance of hatchling green turtles. Here we examine the morphology and crawling and swimming performance of hatchling green turtles as they emerge from nests on Heron Island rookery in the southern Great Barrier Reef to test the hypothesis that nest temperature in the field can influence these attributes. We found inter-nest differences in hatchling mass and dimensions, and that hatchling mass was not correlated with nest temperature. However, hatchlings from warmer nests had smaller carapace dimensions than hatchlings from cool nests suggesting that more yolk was converted to hatchling tissue during embryonic development in cool nests. There was considerable intra- and inter-nest variation in both crawling and swimming performance of hatchlings. Hatchlings from cool nests tended to be faster crawlers than hatchlings from warm nests, but the thrust produced during swimming was not correlated with nest temperature. During the 4 h swimming trial, hatchlings swimming effort decreased significantly during the first 3 h but swimming effort remained relatively constant for the last 1 h. Individual hatchling crawling and swimming performances were not correlated with each other. Composition of the near-reef zooplankton at Heron Reef,Great Barrier Reef   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Using a light trap, zooplankton was sampled at three stations at Heron Reef, Great Barrier Reef: (a) a typical patch reef in the Heron lagoon, (b) a site in 8 m water on the southern slope of Heron reef, and (c) a station approximately 300 m south of (b), in the open water of the channel between Heron and Wistari reefs. Samples were taken at the surface and on the substratum at the lagoon and reef-slope stations, and at 3 to 6 m depth at the open-water station. A total of 114 taxa, many recognized as species, were distinguished in the samples. Pronounced differences existed in abundance, diversity, and taxonomic composition of the samples obtained at different stations. Less pronounced differences existed between surface and substratum samples from the same station. Near-reef samples were more similar to one another than to open-water samples. Decapod larvae, amphipods, and cumaceans were all abundant in near-reef samples and very rare in open-water samples. Forams, isopods, mysids and polychaetes were common in near-reef samples, and rare or absent in open-water samples. Copepods were abundant in all samples but the near-reef samples contained predominantly different species than did samples from the open water. The near-reef fauna included 66 taxa which did not occur in open-water samples. Many of these were epibenthic rather than strictly planktonic in behaviour.  相似文献

Coral-spawn slicks in the Great Barrier Reef: preliminary observations   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3

Aerial surveys and surface samples in the spring of 1985, showed that slicks of coral eggs and embryos (coral spawn) formed in large numbers within and between reefs in the Central Great Barrier Reef Region. Coral-spawn slicks appeared on the days immediately following the annual mass multispecific spawning of reef corals. They were white or pink in colour, and were often highly elongate in form extending up to 5 km in length, and 10 m in width. Over 99% of each slick sampled during the surveys consisted of dead eggs, embryos and their breakdown products, which formed dense, highly viscous patches readily recognizable during aerial surveys. Despite the low proportion of live material, the slicks contained high concentrations of live embryos (15 to 230 per litre) which were over two orders of magnitude greater than concentrations in adjacent water masses. The distinctive colour, shape and texture of the coral-spawn slicks generally distinguished them from slicks formed by blooms of the blue-green alga Oscillatoria erythraea, which also occur commonly in the region. Many of the slicks were closely associated with surface oceanographic features, such as fronts between water parcels, and wakes and eddies behind reefs. Although more detailed sampling and surveys are required, these results suggest that it may be possible to track the movements of coral embryos and larvae directly for the first one or two days following mass spawning, and indirectly thereafter by monitoring other surface features.  相似文献

The Great Barrier Reef is an iconic ecosystem, known globally for its rich marine biodiversity that includes many thousands of tropical breeding seabirds. Despite indications of localized declines in some seabird species from as early as the mid-1990s, trends in seabird populations across the reef have never been quantified. With a long history of human impact and ongoing environmental change, seabirds are likely sentinels in this important ecosystem. Using 4 decades of monitoring data, we estimated site-specific trends for 9 seabird species from 32 islands and cays across the reef. Trends varied markedly among species and sites, but probable declines occurred at 45% of the 86 species-by-site combinations analyzed compared with increases at 14%. For 5 species, we combined site-specific trends into a multisite trend in scaled abundance, which revealed probable declines of Common Noddy (Anous stolidus), Sooty Tern (Onychoprion fuscatus), and Masked Booby (Sula dactylatra), but no long-term changes in the 2 most widely distributed species, Greater Crested Tern (Thalasseus bergii) and Brown Booby (Sula leucogaster). For Brown Booby, long-term stability largely resulted from increases at a single large colony on East Fairfax Island that offset declines at most other sites. Although growth of the Brown Booby population on East Fairfax points to the likely success of habitat restoration on the island, it also highlights a general vulnerability wherein large numbers of some species are concentrated at a small number of key sites. Identifying drivers of variation in population change across species and sites while ensuring long-term protection of key sites will be essential to securing the future of seabirds on the reef.  相似文献

Sponge populations on Australia's Great Barrier Reef (GBR) may contain a mix of both phototrophic and heterotrophic species. The distribution of many of these sponges on reefs is assumed to be determined by light. A model was developed to investigate how the distribution of phototrophic sponges over depth is restricted by the availability of photosynthetically active radiation. Estimates of the balance between photosynthetic production and the total respiratory demand of entire sponge communities on Davies Reef (a middle-shelf reef of the Great Barrier Reef) are provided. These estimates are based upon published data for community composition and biomass, whilst photokinetic parameters have been determined for a variety of sponge species from oxygenexchange measurements. Phototrophic sponges on the fore-reef slope are predicted to exist at or above a state of net 24 h compensation (i.e., photosynthetic oxygen production by sponges balances or exceeds respiration over a 24 h period) to a depth of 30 m. It is proposed that phototrophic sponges are obligate phototrophs because the availability of light for photosynthesis corresponds with the lower depth limit of their distribution. Sponge communities (including both phototrophs and heterotrophs) from the fore-reef and lagoon exist close to a state of net 24 h compensation to a depth of 10 to 15 m. This balance shows diurnal variations, associated with the activity of phototrophs, such that instantaneous compensation of the community may occur to depths of 20 to 25 m when light is maximal.  相似文献

Digestive tract contents collected from carcasses of 82 loggerhead sea turles (Caretta caretta) found on the south Texas coast from 1986 through 1988 were examined. Benthic invertebrates were the predominant prey. Sea pens (Virgularia presbytes), crabs, and mollusks accounted for 94% of the dry weight of the digestive tract samples. Temporal changes in the percent occurrence and percent dry weight of sea pens, crabs, and mollusks in the digestive tract samples were significant. Loggerheads fed primarily on sea pens during spring, then primarily on crabs during summer and fall. The increase of crabs in the loggerhead diet paralleled the annual increase in the abundance of crabs in the Gulf of Mexico. Sea pens were located nearshore at depths of 6 to 12 m and had a disjunct distribution. Present address: Texas A&M University, Department of Biology, College Station, Texas 77843-3258, USA  相似文献

The composition and functionality of ecologically important herbivorous fish assemblages were examined throughout much of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef (GBR). Diversity and abundance of surgeonfishes (Acanthuridae), parrotfishes (Labridae) and rabbitfishes (Siganidae) were strongly associated with position on the continental shelf, whilst effects of latitude were weaker and inconsistent. Species distributions varied considerably amongst taxonomic groups; parrotfishes were mostly widespread whilst distributions of surgeonfishes were often restricted. Most inshore environments supported depauperate herbivore assemblages dominated by different taxa and functional groups compared with assemblages in offshore environments. There were also strong cross-shelf transitions in the main taxa performing each functional role. Overall, this study show that the functional contributions of herbivorous fish assemblages to important ecosystem processes and the contributing taxa vary considerably amongst different GBR environments. Additionally, the two most numerically dominant herbivores actively select detritus, not algae, supporting increasing evidence for the importance of detritus in coral reef ecology.  相似文献

Few estimates of natural mortality have been reported for coral reef fishes, yet this information is essential for predicting the effects of recruitment fluctuations on adult populations. In this study, mortality of adult (10 species) and juvenile (11 species) labrid fishes resident on ten isolated patch reefs in One Tree Lagoon, southern Great Barrier Reef, was estimated by visual censuses covering 30 mo, from November 1981 to April 1984. Numbers of adults of all species declined linearly over this period. Mortality rates differed significantly among species, ranging from 4.9 to 69.5% per annum. Average life-span for fishes that had survived the first year of life varied from 1.6 to 11.5 yr, depending on species. Average juvenile mortality varied among species from 25 to 91.8% per annum and was highest for abundant schooling species. Different cohorts of the same species also experienced significantly different rates of mortality. No clear relationship emerged between the number of new recruits and the number of fishes surviving to one year of age. The influence of recruitment fluctuations on adult populations of labrid fishes may be difficult to predict.  相似文献

To investigate the natural defenses of Antarctic marine organisms against exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation (280 to 320 nm), 57 species (1 fish, 48 invertebrates, and 8 algae) were collected during austral spring 1988 in the vicinity of Palmer Station (Anvers Island, Antarctic Peninsula) and were analyzed for the presence of mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs), compounds that absorb UV radiation and may provide shielding from these biologically hazardous wavelengths. Nearly 90% of the 57 species examined contained MAAs, and eight specific MAA compounds were identified. Seven of these (palythine, porphyra-334, shinorine, mycosporineglycine, palythene, asterina-330, and palythinol) have been observed previously in marine organisms from temperate and tropical latitudes. A new MAA, mycosporineglycine: valine, was found in the Antarctic fish and in 38 of the invertebrate species examined. This study confirms widespread occurrence of MAAs in Antarctic marine organisms and suggests that these species have some degree of natural biochemical protection from UV exposure.Contribution No. 502 from the Australian Institute of Marine Science  相似文献

Following observations of mass spawning of hermatypic corals on the Great Barrier Reef in 1981 and 1982, spawning dates were successfully predicted and documented at five reefs on the Central and Northern Great Barrier Reef in 1983. During the predicted times, 105 species from 36 genera and 11 families were observed to spawn. Of these, 15 species were shown to have an annual gametogenic cycle. All but two of the species observed during mass spawnings shed gametes which underwent external fertilization and development. Synchronous spawning was observed both within and between the five reefs studied, which were separated by as much as 5° of latitude (500 km) or almost a quarter of the length of the Great Barrier Reef. The mass spawning of corals took place on only a few nights of the year, between the full and lastquarter moon in late spring. Maturation of gametes coincided with rapidly rising spring sea temperatures. Lunar and diel cycles may provide cues for the synchronization of gamete release in these species. The hour and night on which the greatest number of species and individuals spawned coincided with low-amplitude tides. Multispecific synchronous spawning, or mass spawning, of scleractinian and some alcyonacean corals represents a phenomenon which is, so far, unique in both marine and terrestrial communities.  相似文献

To investigate which physical processes contribute most in moulding zooplankton community structure in the waters close to coral reefs, light traps moored in a grid pattern were used to collect zooplankton from the sea surface at 16 stations on the downstream side of Helix Reef during three time periods (2100-2200, 2400-0100, and 0300-0400 hours) over three consecutive nights covering the new moon period in January 1992. Two distinct zooplankton communities were present: a community composed primarily of reef-resident, demersal plankton immediately to the south of the reef in an area of reduced flushing, and a community containing coastal and shelf-seas taxa at the more exposed sites in the open flow field. The fauna composition at a number of exposed stations was as rich as that at sheltered stations both in terms of number of taxa and diversity indices but was almost an order of magnitude less abundant. The reef-resident, demersal plankton community was dominated by gammarid amphipods, mysids, and polychaetes, whereas only transient, meroplanktonic forms such as echinoderm and echinopluteus larvae and shelf-seas, holoplanktonic forms such as doliolids and larvaceans were significantly more abundant in the exposed community. Zooplankton associations were apparently formed by a combination of hydrodynamic processes, spatial and temporal distribution patterns of individual taxa, specific behaviours of certain taxa, and the interactions among taxa at different trophic levels.  相似文献

Spatial variation in the epilithic algal matrix (EAM) cryptofauna was investigated at three locations on the Great Barrier Reef: two inner shelf—Orpheus Island and the Turtle Island group—and a mid-shelf location, Lizard Island. Although the EAM appears to be a relatively simple and consistent habitat, significant differences in cryptofaunal assemblages were found between locations. EAM assemblages from Orpheus Island were markedly different. This appears to be a function of the sediment profile characteristics (grain size >60 µm) at Orpheus Island, as many cryptofaunal taxa displayed positive relationships with sediment volume. However, sediment volumes did not differ significantly between the three locations, highlighting the possibility of cyclonic activity affecting the sediment profile at Orpheus Island in the months preceding the study, in addition to the nutrient input from major terrigenous sources. The results of this study show that EAM cryptofaunal assemblages are not uniform across the Great Barrier Reef and suggest that dissolved nutrients, sediment loads and distance from river systems may be significant drivers of cryptobenthic faunal compositions.  相似文献

A population of the bivalve mollusk Tridacna maxima (Röding) from Hron Island, Great Barrier Reef, Australia, was studied by gel electrophoresis, and proved to be highly variable genetically, with an average heterozygosity of about 22%. This compares closely with a population of T. maxima from Enewetak (Eniwetok) Atoll, with an average heterozygosity of about 20%, very high for marine organisms. Enewetak Atoll was the site of a series of nuclear tests. The Heron Island study verifies that the high variability is natural, and supports the hypothesis that species from trophically stable environments tend to be highly variable genetically.  相似文献

Abstract: Spatial and temporal dynamics of ecological processes have long been considered important in marine systems, but seldom have conservation objectives been set for them. Climate change makes the consideration of the dynamics of ecological processes in the design of marine protected areas critical. We analyzed sea‐surface temperature (SST) trends and variability in Great Barrier Reef Marine Park (GBRMP) for 25 years and formulated and tested whether three sets of notional conservation objectives were met to illustrate the potential for planning to address climate change. Given mixed and limited evidence that no‐take areas increase resilience to disturbances such as anomalously high temperatures (i.e., temperatures ≥1 °C above weekly mean temperature), our conservation objectives focused on areas less likely to be affected by such events at extents ranging from the entire Great Barrier Reef to the system of no‐take zones and individual no‐take zones. The objective sets were (1) at least 50% of temperature refugia (i.e., pixels that had high‐temperature anomalies <5% or <7% of the time) within no‐take zones, (2) maximum occurrence of high‐temperature anomalies is <10%,< 20%, or <30% of total no‐take area 90% of the time, and (3) coverage of any single no‐take zone by high‐temperature anomalies occurs <5% or <10% of the time. We used satellite imagery from 1985–2009 to measure SST to determine high‐temperature anomalies. SSTs in the Great Barrier Reef increased significantly in some regions, and some of the conservation objectives were met by the park's current zoning plan. Dialogue between conservation scientists and managers is needed to develop appropriate conservation objectives under climate change and strategies to meet them.  相似文献

The distribution of total dry weight of zooplankton, copepod numbers and ichthyoplankton across the outer continental shelf in the central Great Barrier Reef was examined at bi-weekly intervals for three months over summer of 1983. Copepods were sampled (236 m net) within 10 m of the surface and within 10 m of the bottom. Mean densities in surface waters decreased markedly from the mid-shelf to outer shelf and the Coral Sea, but no cross-shelf gradient occurred in the bottom-water. Densities of copepods on the mid-shelf (surface and bottom waters) and in bottom-waters of the outer shelf were typically ca. 400 m–3. Significantly lower densities (ca. 100 m–3) occurred in surface waters of the outer shelf, except during outbursts of Acartia australis, when densities in these waters differed little from those elsewhere on the shelf. In oceanic waters, 10 km from the outer shelf station, copepod densities in surface waters were ca. 40 m–3. Four of the five most abundant copepod taxa in surface waters, Paracalanus spp., Eucalanus crassus, Acrocalanus gracilis and Canthocalanus pauper, tended to be most abundant at the mid-shelf end of the transect. Acartia australis was sporadically very abundant in surface waters of the outer shelf, as was Paracalanus spp. in bottom-water of the outer shelf. An assemblage of Coral Sea species of copepod occurred in bottom-water of the outer shelf during two major intrusions, but not at other times. Densities of all common species varied considerably between cruises. Maximum densities of all common species except A. australis tended to be associated with diatom blooms linked to intrusions but a bloom did not necessarily mean all common species were abundant. Fish larvae included both reef and non-reef taxa, with reef taxa predominating on the outer shelf (approx 2:1 in density of individuals) and non-reef taxa dominating in nearshore samples (approx 2:1). Nine of the ten most abundant taxa analysed showed highly significant variation in numbers among stations and all but one of these also exhibited significant station x cruise interactions. Interactions generally reflected changes in the rank importance of adjacent stations from one cruise to the next or lack of any significant cross-shelf variation on some cruises where overall abundance of the taxa was low.  相似文献

Reproduction in five species of crinoids [Himerometra bartschi (A. H. Clark), H. robustipinna (P. H. Carpenter), Cenometra bella (Hartlaub), Colobometra perspinosa (P. H. Carpenter), and Oligometra serripinna (P. H. Carpenter)] was studied at Lizard Island, Queensland, over 24 mo, from April 1981 to March 1983 (except for O. serripinna —June 1981 to March 1983). All five species of crinoids were dioecious, although a few instances of synchronous hermaphroditism were noted in H. bartschi, C. perspinosa, and O. serripinna. Gonad morphology and the sequence of developmental stages were similar in each species. Within individuals, gametogenesis was synchronous in gonads both along and between arms, except in some proximal and distal genital pinnules in which gonads never matured. Within a species, there was a degree of synchrony of gametogenesis in a sample, but the level of gametogenic activity varied considerably between years. A high level of continuous reproductive activity was observed in H. bartschi, H. robustipinna, Cenometra bella, and Colobometra perspinosa from about mid-summer to early/mid-winter, while O. serripinna probably had a bimodal reproductive cycle with peaks around February and June. There was a significant 1:1 male:female sex ratio in the populations sampled, and unsexable individuals were significantly smaller (as determined by maximum arm length) than either sexable males or females.  相似文献

Over 15 000 coral recruits were counted on settlement plates from three mid-shelf reefs and six fringing reefs in the northern section of the Great Barrier Reef during two summers (1986 and 1987) and one winter (1987). The density of coral recruits on some settlement plates from a fringing reef was up to 4.88 cm–2, the highest value ever reported. Mean density of recruits was greater on fringing reefs (81.1 recruits/settlement plate) than on mid-shelf reefs (15.6 recruits/settlement plate), but there was greater spatial variation in abundance of recruits between the fringing reef sites. Other differences between the mid-shelf reefs and the fringing reefs were that different taxa were dominant, and that settlement orientation differed, with mid-shelf recruits settling preferentially on horizontally oriented surfaces and fringingreef recruits preferring vertical surfaces. Of the three midshelf reefs, Green Island reef recorded the highest recruitment rate for each of the two summers, despite having a depauperate adult coral population following predation by the asteroidAcanthaster planci. This suggests that coral larvae frequently travel between reefs. In contrast with an earlier study, there was no consistent difference in abundance of recruits between forereef and backreef locations. Overall, the results indicated great spatial variation in the availability of coral larvae, both on the scale of whole reefs and within-reef habitats.  相似文献

White syndromes (WS) are among the most prevalent coral diseases, and are responsible for reef demise on the Great Barrier Reef. The disease manifests as a clear differentiation between tissue and exposed skeleton and results in rapid tissue loss. Fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH) was used in conjunction with histology and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to investigate bacterial communities and cell death associated with WS. No evidence of bacterial communities or microbial association (using six bacterial probes, TEM and histopathology) was evident within the lesion or adjacent tissues, despite the presence of dense possible secondary invaders in the exposed skeletal regions. Despite widespread reference to necrosis in coral disease literature, there was no evidence of necrosis in any WS lesion or the adjacent tissues in this study. However, in situ end labelling, light microscopy and TEM of WS and healthy coral tissue sections showed evidence of extensive programmed cell death (PCD) exclusively in WS. This study provides the first evidence of intrinsic or PCD as a primary mechanism of cell death in WS, and may provide some explanation for the failure to isolate pathogens from over 80% of identified coral diseases, many of which show similar lesion patterns and WS characteristics.  相似文献

Within the tropics, mangroves and coral reefs represent highly productive biomes. Although these habitats are often within close proximity, the role and importance of mangrove habitats for reef fish species remains unclear. Throughout the Indo-Pacific, reef fish species appear to have few links with estuarine mangrove habitats. In contrast, clear-water non-estuarine mangrove habitats throughout the Caribbean support many reef fish species and may be fundamental for sustaining reef fish populations. But how important are clear-water non-estuarine mangroves for reef fishes within the Indo-Pacific? Using visual surveys during diurnal high tide, the fish assemblages inhabiting clear-water mangrove and adjacent reef habitats of Orpheus Island, Great Barrier Reef, were recorded. Of the 188 species of fishes that were recorded, only 38 were observed to inhabit both habitats. Of these, only eight were observed more than five times within each habitat. These observations provide little indication that the clear-water mangroves are an important habitat for reef fish species. In addition, although based on just a 3-month survey period, we found little evidence to suggest that these areas are important nurseries for reef fish species. The clear-water mangroves of Orpheus Island may, however, provide an additional foraging area for the few reef fish species that were observed to utilize these habitats during high tide. The difference in the importance of clear-water mangroves for reef fishes within this study compared with clear-water mangrove counterparts within the Caribbean is surprising. Although only preliminary, our observations would support suggestions that the patterns reflect the different hydrological characteristics and evolutionary histories of these two biogeographic regions.  相似文献
