Gill epithelia of Modiolus modiolus and Mytilus edulis (Baltic and North Seas), and the skin, pharynx and muscles of Branchiostoma lanceolatum (Pallas) have been investigated at the ultrastructural level, employing hydrostatic pressure, to explore the possibility of structural regeneration following decompression. Restoration of all cell structures seems possible to a certain extent, depending on the degree of disintegration and the time period given after decompression. Structural reorganization after release of pressure begins immediately, but no regenerated organelle is comrable with control species, since structural scars remain. Non-reversible destruction to some systems is apparent near the respective LD50-values of the species.  相似文献

The shedding of gametes of Botryllus primigenus Oka occurs in the natural environment early in the morning, about 1 h after dawn. The shedding of the sperm from a testis is completed within a few seconds. All the spermatozoa in a testis are released at once. Ovulation begins about 10 min after shedding of sperm and is completed in about 1 min. In general, combinative testes, i.e., testes accompanied by egg follicles, macure first, followed by egg follicles, solitary testes located on the left side of the zooid, and finally those on the right side, in that order. As a result, a population of zooids of the same generation in a colony sheds sperm on 2 or 3 successive days. Illumination preceded by darkness effectively induces shedding of gametes experimentally. The required minimum dark-adaptation period is 40 min; the required minimum illumination period is dependent on light-intensity, 8, 4 and 1 min being required at 70, 200 and 3,000 lux, respectively; the latent period is temperature-dependent, 100 to 130, 70 to 90 and 50 to 60 min being required at 21o, 26o and 27.5°C, respectively. At the inter-specific level, per offspring investment (POI), degree of abbreviated development, and lecithotrophic potential all increase with increasing latitude and freshwater penetration among crustaceans. These traits are considered adaptations to conditions of decreasing growth potential. We hypothesise that this relationship between POI and abbreviated development also occurs at the intra-specific level. We studied the caridean shrimp, Palaemonetes varians, to investigate the hypothesis that under food-limited conditions, higher POI enables development through fewer larval instars. Under starvation stress, larvae from broods of greater POI (measured as hatchling brood average dry weight, DW) generally developed through fewer larval instars. With increasing starvation period, larval development time increased, whilst larval growth rate, juvenile DW, juvenile carbon mass, and juvenile carbon:nitrogen (C:N) ratio all decreased. Larval development time generally decreased with increasing brood average dry weight. In contrast, larval growth rate, juvenile DW, juvenile carbon mass, and juvenile C:N ratio all increased with increasing larval brood average DW. The relationship between POI and larval instar number (abbreviation of development) reported here is consistent with that at the inter-specific level and supports the concept that macro-ecological trends in development modes at the inter-specific level may be driven by selection occurring on POI at the intra-specific level.  相似文献

This work aims to explore a procedure to improve biological wastewater treatment efficiency using low intensity ultrasound. The aerobic activated sludge from a municipal wastewater treatment plant was used as the experimental material. Oxygen uptake rate (OUR) of the activated sludge (AS) was determined to indicate the changes of AS activity stimulated by ultrasound at 35 kHz for 0–40 min with ultrasonic intensities of 0–1.2 W/cm2. The highest OUR was observed at the ultrasonic intensity of 0.3 W/cm2 and an irradiation period of 10 min; more than 15% increase was achieved immediately after sonication. More significantly, the AS activity stimulated by ultrasound could last 24 h after sonication, and the AS activity achieved its peak value within 8 h after sonication, or nearly 100% higher than the initial level after sonication. Therefore, to improve the wastewater treatment efficiency of bioreactors, ultrasound with an intensity of 0.3 W/cm2 could be employed to irradiate a part of the AS in the bioreactor for 10 min every 8 h.  相似文献

Temperature-pressure experiments have been carried out on gill epithelium of Modiolus modiolus and Mytilus edulis (Baltic and North Seas), as well as on the skin, pharynx, and trunk muscles of Branchiostoma lanceolatum (Pallas), employing the technique of pressure fixation. Temperatures of 0°, 5° and 15°C have been combined with pressures up to 800 atm. Low temperature (0°C) intensifies disintegration of ultrastructures by pressure in comparison to 5°C. The highest degree of structural disorganization can be observed at 600 atm and 0°C. Increased temperature (15°C) increases pressure resistance, but the structural difference is more quantitative than qualitative. In pressure experiments, temperature probably affects cell organelles at the molecular level.  相似文献

Pulse amplitude modulated (PAM) fluorescence has been used as a proxy of microphytobenthic biomass after a dark adaptation period of 15 min to stabilise the minimum fluorescence yield (F o 15). This methodology was investigated for in situ migratory and ex situ engineered non-migratory biofilms, comparing dark adaptation to low (5% ambient) and far-red light treatments over different emersion periods. Far-red and low light reduced potential errors resulting from light history effects, by reversal of non-photochemical quenching after 5 min of treatment, compared to over 10 min required by conventional dark adaptation. An in situ decline of minimum fluorescence yield over 15 min was observed during the dark adaptation for migratory biofilms, but was not observed in the non-migratory biofilms indicating that the major cause of decline was downward vertical migration of cells into the sediment. This pattern occurred in far-red light after 10 min, but not for the low light treatment, indicating that low light maintained the biomass at the surface of the sediment. It is therefore concluded that low light treatment is a better option than conventional dark adaptation for the measurement of minimum fluorescence as a proxy of microphytobenthic biomass.  相似文献

Background

The vertical migration of phytoplankton was investigated in natural waters using in situ fluorescence profiling, chlorophyll a concentrations and life counts at two study sites differing in coloured dissolved organic matter (cDOM) concentrations. The data from the corresponding water depths (50-cm intervals down to 10 m) and times (hourly, before dawn to sunset, several days) were related to the highly resolved (2 nm) underwater ultraviolet radiation (UVR)/photosynthetic active radiation (PAR) transparency (290 to 700 nm).

Results

Chlorophyll a maxima of mainly motile dinoflagellates were observed in situ at all days and at both study sites (open marine, brackish waters), independent on prevailing weather conditions or cDOM concentrations. Phytoplankton migration was triggered solely by irradiance in the 400- to 700-nm wavelength range (PAR) at the particular water depth, irrespective of PAR/UVR ratios and surface UVR (290 to 400 nm), after an illumination period of about 40 min. Interestingly, the PAR tolerance levels of the phytoplankton, which have been lower in cDOM-rich waters, matched their light acclimation values determined by parallel PAM measurements.

Conclusions

The response of the phytoplankton to PAR is not a sufficient protection strategy versus increasing UVR levels, which might have wide ecological implications beyond the level of primary producers to impact important ecosystem functions such as the delicate trophic interactions.  相似文献

Hydrostatic pressure-induced apoptosis on nauplii of Calanus sinicus   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The effect of hydrostatic pressure on embryonic development of the calanoid copepod Calanus sinicus was studied. Differences of pressure effect among blastomere stages, 1-cell, 2-cell, 4-cell, 8-cell, 16-cell, blastula and limb-bud stage, were examined under two pressurizing conditions, abruptly (10 atm/min) and gradually (0.1 atm/min) increasing. Egg hatching success, deformity frequency and apoptotic cell degradation of hatched nauplii were examined. Egg hatching success rate was not significantly different between blastomere stages, and also between pressurizing conditions. Deformity frequencies of hatched nauplii were low in the early 1-cell and 2-cell stages, and high in the later blastula and limb-bud stages, in both abrupt and gradual pressurizing conditions. On the other hand, in regard to difference in pressurizing conditions, deformity frequency in gradual pressurizing was significantly higher than that in abrupt pressurizing rate. Gradual pressure increase seems to be more harmful to C. sinicus eggs than abrupt pressure change. Apoptosis induced in nauplii by hydrostatic pressure was detected for the first time in marine zooplankton. The embryos of C. sinicus are sensitive to pressure variations, that is, these embryos are supposed to sink to deeper waters, incurring greater risk of having deformities. In the field, C. sinicus ascend to the surface and spawn at night. By looking from this upward behavior, eggs are spawned at lower pressure and warmer temperature. Probably, the harmless low pressure and warm temperature lead eggs to hatch early and to recruit successfully.  相似文献

Competition for a mate restricts mate search of female pied flycatchers   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Summary We studied the mate sampling behaviour of female pied flycatchers, Ficedula hypoleuca, in a 40-ha area containing 10–12 unmated males whose nestboxes were monitored with videocameras. The main results were: (1) The females undertook a restricted mate search. The females that mated in the area during three monitoring periods (n = 20, 12 females released by us and 8 females that arrived naturally) sampled 1–10 males (median 4.5). This was about 40% of the available mating options. (2) Search costs in terms of time and energy were low. The search period was short (median 5.1 h) and only a small proportion of the search period was spent at the nestboxes of males (median 4%). The females visited up to seven different males in 1 h, and the time elapsing between visits to different males was short (median 13 min). The minimum distance travelled during the search was also short (median 1.4 km). (3) There was competition between the females. We recorded seven cases of two females visiting the same male at the same time, including at least one case involving physical fighting. (4) Females that experienced a high level of competition had a more restricted mate search than females that experienced a low level of competition. (5) The search pattern of most of the females did not conform to the best-of-n-males rule nor to the threshold criterion rule, because they made repeated visits to many of the males sampled.  相似文献

The locomotor activity patterns and agonistic encounters of cultured juvenile (IX–XIII stage) American lobsters, Homarus americanus (Milne-Edwards) held in 8 experimental environments were investigated to examine their relative contribution to aggressive level. Three variables: (1) lobsters individually or communally maintained, (2) shelters present or absent, and (3) open or closed seawater system were tested in a set of factorial experiments. Locomotor activity of lobsters held in a 12 h: 12 h light: dark regime was recorded for individually separated lobsters for the first 5 days and for communally held lobsters for the next 5 days of a 10-day experimental period. All lobsters maintained individually had similar levels of activity. When the same individuals were communally maintained, there appeared to be social inhibition of activity. In addition, communally held lobsters without shelter were twice as active as those provided with shelter. The activity levels of groups of communally held lobsters with shelter progressively decreased over the experimental period. All lobsters became somewhat entrained to the light: dark cycle and were nocturnally active. However, the degree of entrainment was strongly influenced (P<0.001) by the presence or absence of shelter and other lobsters. Individually maintained lobsters all showed good entrainment, although those provided with shelter were slightly better entrained. The presence of conspecifics desynchronized activity patterns when shelter was not provided. Aggressive level, as measured by the frequency of agonistic encounters per 15-min observation period and the number and types of displays per encounter, decreased over an 8-day period for groups of 3 lobsters in all experimental environments. Lobsters maintained in a closed system initially showed higher frequencies of agonistic encounters than those held in an open system. The observed decrease in aggressive level with time primarily resulted from decreased activity levels. When two lobsters met, the probability of an agonistic encounter was about 0.8 throughout the experimental period, but decreasing activity levels resulted in progressively fewer encounters. The results suggest several approaches for limiting aggression among communally maintained lobsters in culture systems by environmental manipulation.  相似文献

The crab Carcinus maenas (L.) was exposed to radioactively labelled cadmium dissolved in seawater at concentrations of 0.1, 1 and 10 ppm, the latter concentration being toxic to the crabs (50% mortality after 12.3 days). Net accumulation of cadmium from solution was proportional to the level and time period of cadmium exposure. Total absorbed cadmium levels reached 0.0043 and 0.0412 mg Cd g-1 dry weight after 40 days exposure to 0.1 and 1 ppm Cd, respectively, and 0.1115 mg Cd g-1 dry weight after 12.3 days average exposure to 10 ppm Cd. The highest tissue concentration was found in the midgut gland, reaching 0.786 mg Cd g-1 dry weight after 12.3 days average exposure to 10 ppm Cd. The midgut gland only contained about 10% of the total cadmium absorbed from solution, while the exoskeleton contained the bulk of obsorbed cadmium (59 to 80%) probably passively adsorbed onto the surface. When cadmium was absorbed by the crabs from a food source, the midgut gland contained 16.9% of the total absorbed cadmium whereas the exoskeleton now contained only 22.2%. Ten percent of the cadmium available in the food source (Artemia salina) was accumulated by the crabs. When placed in cadmium-free seawater, crabs that had accumulated cadmium from solution lost 69% of the absorbed cadmium in 10 days, mostly from the exoskeleton which lost 78% of its original absorbed cadmium concentration.  相似文献

Vacuole passage time (VPT) and digestion time (DT) in the heterotrichous marine ciliateFabrea salina (Henneguy) (from cultures) were measured in 1986 under different food concentrations, using epifluorescence microscopy, and employing fluorescent particles andRhodomonas lens as tracers. Both VPT and DT were unaffected by food concentrations ranging form 0 to 106 cells ml?1 and can be treated as constants (120.0 and 71.2 min, respectively). Vacuole life expectancy may be related to the ingestion-rate-determining need forde novo membrane synthesis and “old” vacuole membrane recycling which feeds new endocytotic vacuole production. Both processes are enzyme-controlled, which would explain the observations of other investigators that at least in certain ciliates digestion time is responsive to changes in temperature.  相似文献

Employing the technique of pressure fixation, the effect of high hydrostatic pressure (1 to 800 atm) at 5°C has been investigated on cilia of the gill epithelium in Modiolus modiolus, Mytilus edulis (Baltic and North Seas), and on the skin and muscle cells of Branchiostoma lanceolatum (Pallas). With increasing pressure, the filaments and tubuli are increasingly disorganized to an electron-dense material, which seems to be a conglomeration of the globular structure units. Minimum pressure causing disintegration of filaments and tubules is 300 atm; 600 atm is critical, especially for filaments in skin cells of B. lanceolatum. Whereas the filaments do not show any intermediate stages of damage at any one pressure, microtubules show different stages of disorganization. There seems to be a direct relation between motility and structural organization of cilia. Probably the mechanisms of disintegration of filaments and microtubules are related to the enzymatic activities and the protein-protein-interactions of the subunits. The difference between di-and monomer enzymatic systems in the structures may be important for pressure resistance of the organelles.  相似文献

Low-elevation coastal areas and their populations are at risk during and after the appearance of a storm surge event. Coastal flooding as a result of storm surge events is investigated in this paper for a number of areas around the north-eastern (NE) Mediterranean coastal zone (Adriatic, Aegean and north Levantine seas). The sea level rise (SLR) due to storm surge events is examined for the period 2000?C2004. Wind data, atmospheric pressure and wave data for this period as well as in situ sea elevation measurements (from stations around the Mediterranean coasts) were used. Potential inundation zones were then identified using a 90-m horizontal resolution digital elevation model (DEM). At these zones, the sea surface elevations were calculated for the study period, using the collected data and a 2D storm surge simulation model (1/10o??1/10o) output, examining the sea level alteration in specific coastal areas, where in situ measurements are absent and are characterised as ??risky?? in inundation areas, due to their topography. In order to determine the level of storm track implication on major SLR incidents, the trajectories of the respective storm events were computed. The aim of this paper is to investigate the major storm surge events that appeared during the study period, identify the major ??risky?? costal regions along the north-eastern Mediterranean coast and determine their hazard level due to inundation caused by storm surge phenomena. The combination of the risk level determination of an area and the calculation of sea level alteration is an important tool in terms of predicting and protecting the coastal area from extreme meteorological incidents.  相似文献

Individuals of many taxa gather social information in order to make informed decisions with lowered unpredictability. Social information may show temporal periods of higher information value during certain events. However, the value of information is expected to decrease with time since the event and individuals accessing this information are expected to do so quickly. In birds, prospectors visit the nests of other individuals to gather information about reproductive decisions and breeding success. Individuals are known to prospect even during their own breeding to access this information. We investigated prospecting behavior of pied flycatchers (Ficedula hypoleuca) at conspecific nests within a short time period following a simulated predator visit. We performed predator and control presentations at flycatcher nests, and recorded all prospectors (foreign conspecific individuals) visiting these nests within 45-min periods before and after the presentations. We found a significant increase in conspecific prospectors visiting focal nests after the presentation of a predator near the nest. The prospectors in our data comprised mainly pied flycatchers actively breeding in the neighborhood of the focal nest. We also found that the increase in prospecting at these nests is of short-duration, and that prospecting rates decreased back to background prospecting levels relatively quickly. Our results find support for the prediction that individuals may respond to temporally peaking value of information after certain observable events. This result suggests that prospecting may be especially aimed at specific periods of high information value.  相似文献

Human-mediated and natural disturbances such as nutrient enrichment, habitat modification, and flood events often result in significant shifts in species composition and abundance that translate into changes in the food web structure. Six mass-balanced models were developed using the “Ecopath with Ecosim” software package to assess changes in benthic food web properties in the Mondego estuarine ecosystem (Portugal). Field, laboratory and literature information were used to construct the models. The main study objective was to assess at 2 sites (a Zostera meadow and a bare sediment area) the effects of: (1) a period of anthropogenic enrichment, which led to excessive production of organic matter in the form of algal blooms (1993/1994); (2) the implementation of mitigation measures, following a long period of eutrophication (1999/2000); and (3) a centenary flood (winter 2000/2001). Different numbers of compartments were identified at each site and in each time period. In general, the Zostera site, due to its complex community, showed a higher number of compartments and a higher level of system activity (i.e. sum of consumptions, respiration, flow to detritus, production, total system throughput, net primary production and system omnivory index). The differences at the two sites in the three time periods in the breakdown of throughput were mainly due to differences in the biomass of the primary producers (higher primary production at the Zostera site). Consumption, respiration and flow to detritus were dominated by the grazers Hydrobia ulvae and Scrobicularia plana at the Zostera and bare sediment sites respectively. At both sites, after recovery measures were implemented there was an increase in S. plana and Hediste diversicolor biomass, consumption, respiration and flows to detritus, and a decrease in H. ulvae biomass and associated flows, which increased again after the flood event. The mass-balanced models showed that the trophic structure of the benthic communities in Mondego estuary was affected differently by each disturbance event. Interestingly, in our study a high system throughput seems to be associated with higher stress levels, which contradicts the idea that higher system activity is always a sign of healthier conditions.  相似文献

Herring larvae were obtained through artificial spawning of Downsherring caught in the southern North Sea near Ijmuiden (Netherlands) on November 18/19, 1965. The eggs were transported to the Marine Station of the Biologische Anstalt Helgoland and transferred into 140 l tanks (Blaxter and Hempel, 1961) using a closed water circulation (inside filter; Fig. 1). All tanks were placed in a dark room at a constant temperature of 10±0.1 °C. Artificial light was kept at a level of about 1.500 lux at the water surface of the tanks for 12 h per day. Dawn was simulated over a period of 30 min in order to avoid abrupt changes in light conditions. The first observations on schooling behaviour were made about 60 days after hatching: at this time the larvae had reached a total length of about 25 to 30 mm. Grouping began with “contact behaviour” of two single individuals: these swam together in the same direction for a matter of seconds only. Groupings of two individuals occurred simultaneously at different places in the same aquarium. Sometimes the larvae formed greater aggregations involving up to 20 individuals. The distances between the larvae were not constant and varied considerably. Shortly after the formation of a school, the initial groups could be distinguished (Fig. 3). Starved larvae tended more towards schooling than well-fed individuals. If food were offered, schooling behaviour ended abruptly.  相似文献

Studies over time provide opportunities to detect variations in the spatial and temporal patterns of clonal organisms and measure changes on their population dynamics related to extreme events. We assessed population dynamics for a bryozoan species dominating a subtidal rocky reef at Tino Island, in the eastern Ligurian Sea (NW Mediterranean). Using 9 years of annual photosurveys (1997–2005), rapid decline in Pentapora fascialis colony cover was shown at 11 and 22 m depths following the anomalous warming events in 1999 and 2003. An 86 % reduction in live colony portion was found after the 1999 warming event (2.3 °C higher than normal), with larger colonies being most affected. Effects from the 2003 event were delayed, and gradual cover decline occurred during the following 2 years. At the “Shallow” photostations, none of the larger colonies (>1,000 cm2) survived after the first cover decline. Availability of new substrate after the 1999 disturbance resulted in enhanced recovery through new colony production. At the “Deep” photostations, the population structure did not change over the duration of the monitoring period showing the same monomodal structure and same dominant size class (50–500 cm²). In the 4 years following the first cover decline, the deeper population regained colony cover to levels similar to pre-disturbance level, showing a good resilience. This 9-year monitoring analysis provided the temporal resolution needed to detect changes occurring in the P. fascialis population and will contribute to the assessment of long-term changes on benthic populations suffering during recent decades from dramatic increases in extreme events.  相似文献

The extended lactation period of the Australian sea lion Neophoca cinerea is suggested to provide additional time for offspring to achieve nutritional independence. We examine the dive and movement development of pups at two age classes (6?C10?months) from two colonies (Lilliput and Olive Islands) in South Australia using archival GPS and time-depth recorders to investigate the degree of overlap with maternal home range. Older pups from Lilliput travelled significantly further and spent more time at sea than younger pups. At Olive Island, there was a similar increase in distance travelled and time spent at sea with age. Pups at both colonies started occupying adult female home range at 6?months. Australian sea lion pups can explore adult foraging habitat at least 8?months prior to weaning, allowing them to learn the location of suitable habitat and the skills required to hunt successfully.  相似文献
