In St. Margaret's Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada, there are large areas in which sea urchins (Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis) have eliminated beds of kelp (Laminaria spp.). Sites were identified where destruction of kelp beds had taken place 1, 2, 3, 3.5 and 4 years ago. With increase of time since kelp disappearance, the sea urchins showed decreased growth rate, reduced gonad size, but an increase in numbers resulting from high recruitment rates in the first two years after kelp bed destruction. These sea urchin populations, by their browsing, effectively prevent the regeneration of kelp. There is, as yet, no evidence of the sea urchin populations being starved out to allow the kelp to return.  相似文献

The intertidal isopods Gnorimosphaeroma oregonensis oregonensis (Dana) and Exosphaeroma amplicauda (Stimpson) are shown to have differing preferences for substratum particle-size categories. In field sampling, 80.9% of the total number of G. oregonensis oregonensis taken were present on substrata falling within a ?-4.2 to-3.8 diameter size-range, while 60.0% of E. amplicauda occupied the range ?-2.5 to-2.1. These relationships changed upon laboratory manipulation of density ratios, and suggest competitive interaction: when E. amplicauda is tested alone, the resultant preference assumes a greater niche breadth and overlap to that of the field. Introduction of G. oregonensis oregonensis produces a displacement of E. amplicauda, the degree being dependent upon their relative numerical strength. With an experimental ratio of 3:1 (G. oregonensis:E. amplicauda) there is a simulation of field densities, and the laboratory results approximate more closely the overlap in nature.  相似文献

The extent to which energy is transferred directly from benthic meiofauna to epibenthic predators was investigated on an intertidal sand-flat in the Exe estuary, southwest England, during 1981–1982 and compared with data obtained from an intertidal mud-flat in the Lyhner estuary, also in south-west England, between 1978 and 1981. Two species of flatfish (Pleuronectes platessa L. and Platichthys flesus L.), two species of goby [Pomatoschistus microps (Krøyer) and P. minutus (Pallas)], brown shrimp (Crangon crangon L.) and shore crabs (Carcinus maenas L.) are the most common epibenthic predators feeding on the benthic invertebrates in these locatites. Harpacticoid copepods are the only component of the meiofauna to form a significant part of the diet of early juvenile stages of these predators, particularly the invertebrates. Harpacticoids are a more important source of food for predators feeding over the sand-flat than for those feeding on the mud-flat because in the sand-flat alternative prey of suitable size, such as small annelids, are absent. Moreover, the impact of predation on the mud-flat is spread over the whole harpacticoid species spectrum whereas on the sandflat it is confined almost entirely to a single species, Asellopsis intermedia (T. Scott). Flatfish, gobies and shrimp consume daily an estimated 0.01 to 0.1% of the standing stock of A. intermedia and account for between 12 and 22% of the observed reduction in the population of this species between July and October. Therefore, only a very small proportion of total meiofauna biomass is transferred directly to higher trophic levels.  相似文献

Examination of large numbers of the echinoid Strongylocentrotus purpuratus (Stimpson) in the years 1969, 1970 and 1971 indicated that the sex ratio at Yaquina Head, Oregon (USA) was significantly different from 1:1, with males predominating. During 1968, 1970 and 1971 at Boiler Bay and Whale Cove, Oregon, the sex ratio did not differ significantly from 1:1 but, in 1969 at Boiler Bay, the proportion of males was 0.61. Two functionally hermaphroditic individuals were found among the 1,354 Yaquina Head echinoids examined, but none were found at Boiler Bay in an equal number of individuals. The hypothesis is proposed that S. purpuratus is a labile gonochorist, with a multiple, autosomal, sex-determining mechanism whose expression may be influenced by the environment.  相似文献

Wildlife populations typically are described by Markovian models, with population dynamics influenced at each point in time by current but not previous population levels. Considerable work has been done on identifying optimal management strategies under the Markovian assumption. In this paper we generalize this work to non-Markovian systems, for which population responses to management are influenced by lagged as well as current status and/or controls. We use the maximum principle of optimal control theory to derive conditions for the optimal management such a system, and illustrate the effects of lags on the structure of optimal habitat strategies for a predator–prey system.  相似文献

Life history patterns of the meiobenthic harpacticoid copepod Microarthridion littorale (Poppe) differed between intertidal and subtidal sites in a South Carolina, USA estuarine salt-marsh system. Throughout the summer and fall, densities of M. littorale were significantly greater intertidally than subtidally; however, for the remainder of the year the population sizes were not statistically different. Maximum densities occurred intertidally in July and subtidally in October. The number of eggs · gravid female-1 was significantly greater subtidally than intertidally at all times. The mean length of all adults increased from summer to spring and was similar between areas. Birth rates and death rates paralleled one another in each area and with the exception of August, birth rates were higher subtidally than intertidally. Juvenile mortality appeared highest subtidally, the mortality apparently occurring in the early naupliar stages. The variation in life history patterns across the tidal gradient was likely the result of differences in food quality and quantity, increased exposure to potential epibenthic predators subtidally, and to differential competitive pressure in the 2 areas.  相似文献

Standing crop, population size, and species diversity of the macrobenthic organisms in an estuarine channel were studied before and after dredging. A new suction-corer which sampled an area 0.1 m2 to a depth of 30 cm was used in order to insure the inclusion of large, deep-dwelling animals. Eleven months after dredging, biomass and number of species and specimens had not recovered to pre-dredging levels. Colonization began with relatively large, swiftly moving forms such as the errant polychaete Nereis succinea and the crab Neopanope texana sayi. Stations in silt and mud regions recovered more slowly than those in sandier sediments. Most of the dominant and subdominant species had not recovered 11 months after dredging, and the previously abundant polychaetes Notomastus latericeus and Clymenella torquata had virtually disappeared. Only relatively uncommon lamellibranchs such as Tellina agilis, Lyonsia hyalina and Mulinia lateralis increased after dredging. Distribution of sediment types changed as the result of modified tidal velocities in the channel. Mud and silt were removed by the dredge, exposing the sand underneath, and sandy stations became muddier as the result of lowered current velocities. Marked changes in species composition reflected this change in sediment character. Eleven months after dredging no evidence of succession was found, but colonization had begun. Values of all three parameters studied were reduced to small fractions of pre-dredging levels, although species diversity in sandy sediments exceeded pre-dredging levels.  相似文献

Genetic differentiation within the intertidal zone was examined in six populations of the asexually reproducing alga Enteromorpha linza growing in the Long Island Sound, USA. Four of the five populations sampled in 1981 showed significant differentiation between high and low intertidal positions with respect to the GOT-2 locus. The pattern of differentiation was consistent for samples collected at several times during the year with some seasonal modifications. Four additional polymorphic loci, resolved in 1982, identified a total of 13 five-locus genotypes or clones. Four of the six populations sampled in 1982 showed significant differences in clone frequency between high and low intertidal positions. Laboratory experiments revealed differences in response to temperature among the clones. At 24°C a high intertidal associated clone showed an increase in growth, while low intertidal associated clones showed decreased growth compared to growth at 15°C. These results suggest that the microgeographic differentiation observed for E. linza in the intertidal zone may in part be due to the differential adaptation of clones to different intertidal environments. Additional demographic information is needed for individual clones in order to determine the role longevity, reproductive output, recruitment and interclonal competition play in maintaining the observed differentiation.  相似文献

Gene flow among 18 widely separated populations of the starfishLinckia laevigata was investigated using allozyme electrophoresis at seven polymorphic enzyme loci. Little genetic differentiation was observed among East Indian-West Pacific populations separated by thousands of kilometres. Gene flow was estimated to be of the same order of magnitude as that found in the highly connected Great Barrier Reef region. The absence of genetic structure over such a broad geographic range is consistent with any of three conclusions: (1) there is extensive dispersal among widely separated populations across the range examined, (2) there has been a rapid expansion of the East Indian-West Pacific populations in the recent past, or (3) the loci surveyed are under the influence of balancing selection. The first two conclusions are not totally exclusive, since a recent expansion over several thousand generations would also require rapid dispersal at some stage, although present-day levels of dispersal need not be of the same order. With the available data, it is not possible to distinguish which of these mechanisms is the most likely. The most parsimonious conclusion is that extremely low levels of population differentiation are consistent with the existence of a large, homogeneous, panmictic population, with extensive dispersal occurring throughout the East Indian-West Pacific.  相似文献

Potential rates of reproduction (PRR) differ between the sexes of many animal species. Adult sex ratios together with PRR are expected to determine the operational sex ratio (OSR) defined as the ratio of fertilizable females to sexually active males at any given time. OSR is expected to determine the degree to which one sex competes for another—the limiting sex. We explored the potential for mate limitation in an intertidal amphipod, Corophium volutator (Pallas). Males have higher PRR than females, but males may be limiting because of extreme female-biased sex ratios observed in this species. Consistent with this idea, late season females were less likely to be ovigerous and had smaller size-specific clutches, both of which were associated with seasonal declines in availability of males of reproductive size. Seasonal changes in ovigery could not be explained by seasonal changes across sites in other factors (e.g., female body size or phenology of breeding). Smaller females were less likely to become ovigerous later in the season at three of four sites. Seasonal reductions in clutch size also occurred among small females expected to be reproducing for their first time. In complimentary laboratory experiments, reduced likelihood of ovigery and reduced fecundity occurred when the number of receptive females was increased relative to availability of a reproductively active male. Our results suggest male mate limitation can occur seasonally in this species and that male limitation is regionally widespread and may affect recruitment.  相似文献

Here long-term monitoring data taken at 33 sites in southern and central California coast and islands were used to evaluate the size structure of the large intertidal limpet, Lottia gigantea in restricted-access and in easily accessible intertidal zones that encompass a wide range of ecological variables. Using multi-dimensional analysis of population size structures, we found that sites on islands and strictly protected mainland sites have significantly larger median limpet sizes and a greater range of limpet sizes than unprotected mainland sites, while no pattern occurs in latitudinal or regional comparison of sites. Although intertidal predators such as oystercatchers were not the primary focus of the monitoring efforts, extensive natural history notes taken during sampling visits support the argument that predation was not a primary cause for the size structure differences. Finally, substratum differences were determined not to have biased the observation of larger limpets in protected sites. In regard to human interactions with limpets, we conclude that the degree of enforcement against poaching is the better predictor of limpet size structure than proximity to population centers or visitation to intertidal sites.  相似文献

Effects of temperature on survival, growth, and photosynthesis were compared for two USA populations of Laminaria saccharina Lamour. One population was located in New York State, near the southern latitudinal boundary of the species in the western North Atlantic. This southern boundary population was exposed to ambient temperatures 20°C for about 6 wk each summer. The second population was located in Maine, toward the center of the latitudinal range of the species, and was rarely exposed to temperatures>17°C. sporophytes from the New York (NY) population exhibited greater tolerance of high temperature than plants from the Maine (ME) site. Juvenile sporophytes from the two sites had similar rates of survivorship and growth at temperatures below 20°C, but showed different responses at 20°C in laboratory experiments. NY plants survived and grew for 6 wk at 20°C. ME plants showed negative growth during wk 2 and 100% mortality during wk 3. NY and ME plants held in situ at the NY site during June to September, 1985, also exhibited differential survivorship when ambient temperatures exceeded 20°C. Results of photosynthesis and dark respiration measurements on NY and ME plants grown at various temperatures suggested that the high-temperature tolerance of NY plants was attributable to their ability to maintain positive daily net C-fixation at 20°C. The high-temperature tolerance of the NY plants appeared to be due to genetic adaptation and is probably crucial to the persistence of the species near its southern boundary.  相似文献

During spring and summer, 1982–1986, experiments were carried out near Marmion Reef, Western Australia. In summer, nearly 30% of the surface solar ultraviolet radiation (280 to 400 nm) penetrates offshore waters to 5 m depth. Experimental removal of the mature Ecklonia radiata kelp canopy in summer results in tissue damage, photopigment destruction, reduced growth, and low survivorship of subcanopy kelp sporophytes. These effects do not occur with canopy removal in winter. Laboratory experiments revealed that the UV component of radiation, rather than intense photosynthetically active radiation, was responsible for the inhibition of growth and photodamage. UV radiation probably affects survival of the settlement stages of E. radiata sporophytes, thus excluding them from otherwise suitable substrata in shallow waters. UV radiation is implicated in the reduction of canopy productivity in summer.  相似文献

Light-related traits were compared for Laminaria saccharina Lamour. collected from three habitats in Maine and New York, USA, with different ambient light regimes. Light-level, expressed as a proportion of surface irradiance (I0), ranged from 0.04 to 0.32 I0 in the shallow habitat, but rarely exceeded 0.04 I0 in the deep and turbid habitats. Juvenile sporophytes collected from each habitat in April, 1985, were grown at four acclimation light-levels (0.065, 0.12, 0.26, and 0.54 I0) in a common-garden, laboratory experiment. Photosynthesis vs irradiance (PI) parameters, light-harvesting characteristics, and rates of carbon-assimilation and growth were determined for each group of plants. The results indicated that ecotypic differentiation had occurred among the three kelp populations. Photosynthetic capacity (Pmax) and photosynthetic efficiency () were generally highest for plants from the turbid habitat, lowest for deep plants, and intermediate for shallow plants. These differences were largely attributable to variations in light-harvesting characteristics. The nature and magnitude of photoacclimation responses also differed among populations. Population differences in photosynthetic parameters resulted in different rates of C-assimilation and growth by plants from shallow, deep, and turbid habitats. Predictions of in situ growth rates indicated that the severity of light-limitation and, therefore, the adaptive significance of efficient light-utilization vary among the three populations. It is concluded that ecotypic differentiation in light-related traits is important to the broad environmetal range of L. saccharina.  相似文献

The species and distribution of nematodes on the kelp Macrocystic integrifolia Bory, in the Bamfield region of Barkley Sound, British Columbia, Canada were examined. Nine species (belonging to six families) of nematodes were found on the kelp blades. Three species (Monhystera disjuncta, M. refringens and Prochromadorella neapolitana) comprised 91–99% of the nematode fauna and occurred in all monthly samples from July 1978 to November 1979. The three dominant species exhibited seasonal density differences. P. neapolitana occurred mostly in the summer, M. refringens abundance peaked from July to October and M. disjuncta was relatively abundant throughout the year. The other species contributed little to the overall abundance and distribution patterns. All three species occurred in greatest abundance on the lower and middle blades of M. integrifolia in the deep end of the kelp bed. Very few individuals occurred on the upper blades. Nematode distribution on M. integrifolia appeared to be related to blade age and the associated food sources on the blade.  相似文献

Male Tigriopus californicus clasp immature females (copepodid stages II–V) for a period of up to a week prior to the female's terminal molt; upon maturation (stage VI) the female is inseminated and released. While females can mate anytime after their terminal molt, experiments using electrophoretically-detected genetic markers indicate that each mates only once in her lifetime. No evidence of sperm displacement was observed. Hence, male mating behavior can be interpreted as pre-copulatory mate guarding, a strategy employed to assure that a potential mate has not been previously inseminated. Males minimize the time investment required to insemiate a single female successfully by preferentially choosing to clasp more developmentally-advanced females; males clasped to stage III females will release them in order to clasp stage V females if the latter are present. Since males are capable of multiple mating, under most conditions of population sex ratio, this mating system results in low availability of unclasped, developmentally-advanced females; consequently, males must clasp successively younger (i.e. developmentally less-advanced) females in order to obtain a successful insemination.  相似文献

The giant kelp Macrocystis pyrifera is one of the largest and fastest growing seaweeds and is dominant over large areas of the west coast of North America. A model of its growth has been developed which describes plant biomass and production over the course of a year as a function of environmental parameters which affect the light flux. Such parameters include water clarity, spacing between plants, bottom depth, latitude, harvesting activity, and photosynthetic response (P max and I k ). Model results for a standard set of conditions (latitude 33°N, 3 m plant spacing, water absorbance of 0.115 m-1 and 12 m depth) yield a peak daily gross production of almost 6 g C m-2 d-1, peak daily net production of almost 3 g C m-2 d-1, and a peak specific growth rate of about 0.022 d-1. Annual gross production for this case is 1 567 g C m-2 yr-1; annual net production is 537 g C m-2 yr-1. These values are comparable to those from field measurements. Size and timing of biomass and production peaks are affected by changes in the parameters describing the light field, with peaks usually occurring later in the year for more adverse circumstances. Inhigher latitudes, the seasonal variation is so extreme that the plant could not last the year at 53° N in 12 m of water, although it is able to survive the year in shallower water. Harvesting has severe effects on biomass and production. Model results suggest that light limitation is a very important constraint on kelp growth that should not be overlooked. This implies that differences in parameters describing two environments must be considered when comparing results obtained at different locales.  相似文献
