Metropolitan residents are concerned about their exposure to airborne pollutants. But establishing these exposures is challenging. A compact personal exposure kit (PEK) was developed to evaluate personal integrated exposure (PIE) from time-resolved data to particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter less than 2.5 μm (PM2.5) in five microenvironments, including office, home, commuting, other indoor activities (other than home and office), and outdoor activities experienced both on weekdays and weekends. The study was conducted in Hong Kong. The PEK measured PM2.5, reported location and several other factors, stored collected data, as well as reported the data back to the investigators using global system for mobile communication (GSM) telemetry. Generally, PM2.5 concentrations in office microenvironment were found to be the smallest (13.0 μg/m3), whereas the largest PM2.5 concentration microenvironments were experienced during outdoor activities (54.4 μg/m3). Participants spent more than 85% of their time indoors, including in offices, homes, and other public indoor venues. On average, 42% and 81% of the time were spent in homes, which contributed 52% and 79% of PIE (during weekdays and weekends, respectively), suggesting that improvement of air quality in homes may reduce overall exposures and indicating the need for actions to mitigate possible public health burdens in Hong Kong. This study also found that various indoor/outdoor microenvironments experienced by urban office workers cannot be accurately represented by general urban air quality data reported from the regulatory monitoring. Such personalized air quality information, especially while in transit or in offices and homes, may provide improved information on population exposures to air pollution.

Implications: A newly developed personal exposure kit (PEK) was used to monitor PM2.5 exposure of metropolitan citizens in their daily life. Different microenvironments and time durations caused various personal integrated exposure (PIE). The stationary monitoring method for PIE was also compared and evaluated with PEK. Positive protection actions can be taken after understanding the major contribution to PM2.5 exposure.  相似文献

This study identifies major contributing sources of high particulate matter (PM) days in Hong Kong and conducive meteorological conditions leading to high PM. The PM10 chemical composition of 3393 ambient samples collected at ten monitoring stations in Hong Kong during 1998–2005 were used as input for positive matrix factorization (PMF) modeling to identify and quantify the aerosol sources in Hong Kong. Days with PM10 levels exceeding 56 μg m?3, the average plus one standard deviation of the mass concentration of all samples, are defined as high PM days. A total of 401 samples fell in the high PM category during the study period. Biomass burning, secondary sulfate and secondary nitrate were found to be the major contributors leading to high PM, responsible for 68–73% of PM10 mass on high PM days. The contributions by these sources on high PM days were 140–180% higher than their respective average concentration contributions. These sources were identified to be regional sources on the grounds of little spatial variation in their concentrations among the monitoring stations and a temporal pattern of higher in the winter and lower in the summer. Sampling days of high PM in 2004 and 2005 were individually examined for weather charts and regional surface wind maps. Weak high pressures over mainland China were the most important synoptic event leading to high PM days in the fall and winter, while typhoon episodes were responsible for most summer cases. Approximately 80% of the high PM days were in the fall and winter months (September–February). Almost all the high PM days were associated with northwesterly, northerly or northeasterly regional transport. Anthropogenic primary sources (coal combustion, vehicular exhaust, and residue oil combustion) showed the highest contributions associated with northwesterly wind, indicating the strong influence of the more urbanized areas to the northwest of Hong Kong in the Pearl River Delta region.  相似文献

The concentrations of respirable suspended particulates (PM10), fine suspended particulates (PM2.5) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) were measured in various locations over the territory of Hong Kong. In order to study the contributions of these pollutants from motor vehicles and their characteristics, the attention was focused on the roadside, street-level concentrations. A statistical analysis of the sampling results was conducted to obtain general characteristics of the roadside particulate and nitrogen dioxide pollution and to investigate the effects of traffic volume and meteorological factors on the pollution levels. High correlation coefficients are found between PM10, PM2.5 and NO2 concentration.  相似文献

Modeling exposure to particulate matter   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Exposure assessment, a component of risk assessment, links sources of pollution with health effects. Exposure models are scientific tools used to gain insights into the processes affecting exposure assessment. The purpose of this paper is to review the process and methodology of estimating inhalation exposure to particulate matter (PM) using various types of models. Three types of models are discussed in the paper. Indirect type of models are physical models that employ inventories of outdoor and indoor sources and their emission rates to identify major sources contributing to exposure to PM, and use fate and transport and indoor air quality models to estimate PM concentrations at receptor sites. PM concentrations and time spent by a subject at each receptor site are input variables to the conventional exposure model that estimates the desired exposure levels. Direct type models use measured exposure or exposure concentrations in conjunction with information obtained from questionnaires to formulate exposure regression models. Stochastic models use exposure measurements, estimates can also be used, to formulate exposure population distributions and investigate associated uncertainty and variability. Since models developed using databases from western countries are not necessarily applicable in developing countries, the difference in requirements among western and developing countries is highlighted in the paper. Employment of exposure modeling methods in developing countries requires development of local information. Such information includes local outdoor and indoor source inventories, local or regional meteorological conditions, adjustment of indoor models to reflect local building construction conditions, and use of questionnaires to obtain local time budget and activity patterns of the subject population.  相似文献

The aims of this study were to determine the particulate matter with aerodynamic diameters > or = 2.5 microm (PM2.5) and 2.5-10 microm (PM10-2.5) exposure levels of drivers and to analyze the proportion of elemental carbon (EC) and organic carbon (OC) in PM2.5 in Bangkok, Thailand. Four bus routes were selected. Measurements were conducted over 10 days in August (rainy season) 2008 and 8 days in January (dry season) 2009. The mean PM2.5 exposure level of the Tuk-tuk drivers was 86 microg/m3 in August and 198 microg/m3 in January. The mean for the non-air-conditioned bus drivers was 63 microg/m3 in August and 125 microg/m3 in January. The PM2.5 and PM10-2.5 exposure levels of the drivers in January were approximately twice as high as those in August. The proportion of total carbon (TC) in PM2.5 to the PM2.5 level in August (0.97 +/- 0.28 microg/m3) was higher than in January (0.65 +/- 0.13 microg/m3). The proportion of OC in the TC of the PM2.5 in August (0.51 +/- 0.08 microg/m3) was similar to that in January (0.65 +/- 0.07 microg/m3). The TC exposure by PM25 in January (81 +/- 30 microg/m3) remained higher than in August (56-21 microg/m3). The mean level of OC in the PM2.5 was 29 +/- 13 microg/m3 in August and 50 +/- 24 microg/m3 in January. In conclusion, the PM exposure level in Bangkok drivers was higher than that in the general environment, which was already high, and it varied with the seasons and vehicle type. This study also demonstrated that the major component of the PM was carbon, likely derived from vehicles.  相似文献

This study conducted roadside particulate sampling to measure the total suspended particulate (TSP), PM10 (particles <10 μm in aerodynamic diameter) and PM2.5 (particles <2.5 μm in aerodynamic diameter) mass concentration in 11 urbanized and densely populated districts in Hong Kong. One hundred and thirty-three samples were obtained to measure the mass concentrations of TSP, PM10 and PM2.5. According to these results, the TSP, PM10 and PM2.5 mass concentrations varied from 94.85 to 301.63 μg m−3, 67.67 to 142.68 μg m−3 and 50.01 to 125.12 μg m−3, respectively. The PM2.5/PM10 ratio of all samples was 0.82 which ranged from 0.62 to 0.95. The PM levels and PM ratios in metropolitan Hong Kong significantly fluctuated from site-to-site and over time. The PM2.5 mass concentration in different districts corresponding to urban industrial, new town, urban residential and urban commercial were 77.64, 87.50, 106.96 and 88.54 μg m−3, respectively. The PM2.5 level is high in Hong Kong, and for individual sampling, more than 60% daily measurements exceeded the NAAQS. The mass fraction of PM2.5 in PM10 and TSP is relatively high when compared with overseas studies.  相似文献

Assessment of human exposure to ambient particulate matter   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
Recent epidemiological studies have consistently shown that the acute mortality effects of high concentrations of ambient particulate matter (PM), documented in historic air pollution episodes, may also be occurring at the low to moderate concentrations of ambient PM found in modern urban areas. In London in December 1952, the unexpected deaths due to PM exposure could be identified and counted as integers by the coroners. In modern times, the PM-related deaths cannot be as readily identified, and they can only be inferred as fractional average daily increases in mortality rates using sophisticated statistical filtering and analyses of the air quality and mortality data. The causality of the relationship between exposure to ambient PM and acute mortality at these lower modern PM concentrations has been questioned because of a perception that there is little significant correlation in time between the ambient PM concentrations and measured personal exposure to PM from all sources (ambient PM plus indoor-generated PM). This article shows that the critical factor supporting the plausibility of a linear PM mortality relationship is the expected high correlation in time of people's exposure to PM of ambient origin with measured ambient PM concentrations, as used in the epidemiological time series studies. The presence of indoor and personal sources of PM masks this underlying relationship, leading to confusion in the scientific literature about the strong underlying temporal relationship between personal exposure to PM of ambient origin and ambient PM concentration. The authors show that the sources of PM of non-ambient origin operate independently of the ambient PM concentrations, so that the mortality effect of non-ambient PM, if any, must be independent of the effects of the ambient PM exposures.  相似文献

The results of a 12-month study of more than 100 solvent extractable organic compounds (SEOC) in particulate matter (PM) less than or equal to 2.5 microm (PM2.5) collected at three air monitoring stations located at roadside, urban, and rural sites in Hong Kong are reported. The total yield of SEOC that accounts for approximately 8-18% of organic carbon (OC) determined by a thermal optical transmittance method was 125-2060 ng/m3, which included 14.6-128 ng/m3 resolved aliphatic hydrocarbons, 39.4-1380 ng/m3 unresolved complex mixtures, 0.6-17.2 ng/m3 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, 41.6-520 ng/m3 fatty acids, and < 0.1-12.1 ng/m3 alkanols. Distinct seasonal variations (summer/winter differences) were observed with higher concentrations of the total and each class of SEOC in the winter and lower concentrations in the summer. Spatial variations are also obvious, with the roadside samples having the highest concentrations of SEOC and the rural samples having the lowest concentrations in all seasons. Characteristic ratios of petroleum hydrocarbons, such as carbon preference index, unresolved to resolved components, and carbon number with maximum concentration, suggest that PM2.5 carbon in Hong Kong originates from both biogenic and anthropogenic sources. The proportion of SEOC in PM2.5 from anthropogenic sources is estimated.  相似文献

Worshippers in temples may be exposed to high concentrations of pollutants emitted from incense burning. This work assessed the PM2.5 and PM10 exposures of temple worshippers in Taiwan and explored the important exposure determinants such as numbers of passing visitors and joss sticks in censers, worshipping dates, and temple characteristics. Sampling was conducted on the 1st, 2nd, 15th, and 16th of the lunar month in two temples in Taichung, Taiwan. Research staff took samples by wearing one PM2.5 and one PM10 sampler and imitating worshipping activity. Personal environmental monitors connected to personal pumps with 2-L/min flow rates were used for sampling. PM10 samples were also simultaneously taken outside the temples. The results suggested that burning joss sticks in temples is a significant PM exposure source. The geometric mean of personal exposure was 444 microg/m3 PM2.5 [geometric standard deviation (GSD) = 1.8] and 583 microg/m3 PM10 (GSD = 1.4). The latter was approximately 4-6 times that of roadside concentrations. Exposures on the 1st and 15th (with more visitors and more joss sticks) were about 130 microg/m3 PM2.5 and 249 microg/m3 PM10 higher than those on the 2nd and the 16th. Furthermore, each joss stick in the censer contributed about 0.40 microg/m3 of particles to the worshippers' exposure. In the worst case, PM exposure during one temple visit would account for 11% of the personal exposure in one day.  相似文献

In the US EPA's 1998 Baltimore Epidemiology-Exposure Panel Study, a group of 16 residents of a single building retirement community wore personal monitors recording personal fine particulate air pollution concentrations (PM2.5) for 27 days, while other monitors recorded concurrent apartment, central indoor, outdoor and ambient site PM2.5 concentrations. Using the Baltimore panel study data, we develop a Bayesian hierarchical model to characterize the relationship between personal exposure and concentrations of PM2.5 indoors and outdoors. Personal exposure is expressed as a linear combination of time spent in microenvironments and associated microenvironmental concentrations. The model incorporates all available monitoring data and accounts for missing data and sources of uncertainty such as measurement error and individual differences in exposure. We discuss the implications of using personal versus ambient PM2.5 measurements in characterization of personal exposure to PM2.5.  相似文献

Dietary exposure to DDT of secondary school students in Hong Kong   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Chung SW  Kwong KP  Yau JC 《Chemosphere》2008,73(1):65-69
The aim of this study was to determine the dietary exposure of DDT in foodstuffs consumed in Hong Kong by secondary school students in Hong Kong in 2005. Food samples of domestic or imported food were collected randomly from local markets for the determination of DDT. The analytical method for this survey was based on isotope dilution technique. DDT isomers were determined at parts per billion (mugkg(-1)) levels in foods by pressured fluid extraction followed by gel permeation column cleanup and gas chromatography with mass spectrometry detection. Among the 98 composite samples, 25 were found positive with DDT levels greater than the limit of quantitation (LOQ) (1mugkg(-1) for each isomer of DDT). Only two of the meat products were found to contain low levels of the metabolites of DDT. A number of fish and shellfish were found to contain not just the metabolites of DDT, but also parent DDT. The main contribution to DDT was from seafood. The dietary intake of DDT for an average and high secondary school student consumers were estimated to be 0.145 and 0.291mugkg(-1)bwd(-1), respectively. Both levels fell well below the Provisional Tolerable Daily Intake (PTDI) of 10mugkg(-1)bwd(-1) established by the Joint Food Agriculture Organization/World Health Organization Meeting on Pesticide Residues (JMPR). It was concluded that both the average and high secondary school student consumers were unlikely to experience major toxicological effects of DDT.  相似文献

To determine the population exposure to PM(10) in Chongqing, China, we developed an indirect model by combining information on the time activity patterns of various demographic subgroups with estimates of the PM(10) concentrations in different microenvironments (MEs). The spatial and temporal variations of the exposure to PM(10) were illustrated in a geographical information system (GIS). The population weighted exposure (PWE) for the entire population was 229, 155 and 211 microg/m(3), respectively, in winter, summer and as the annual average. Indoor PM(10) level at home was the largest contributor to the PWE, especially for the rural areas where high pollution levels were found due to solid fuels burning. Elder people had higher PM(10) exposure than adults and youth, due to more time spent in indoor MEs. The highest health risk due to particulate was found in the city zone and northeast regions, suggesting that pollution abatement should be prioritized in these areas.  相似文献

Personal exposure measurement can serve as an effective tool to understand the effect of exposure to air pollutants. Alternatively, exposure assessment using pollutant concentrations in different microenvironments and accurate time–activity information for the subjects can provide good information regarding human integrated exposure. A panel of 18 healthy students of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur in the age group of 18 to 30 years participated in the personal exposure measurements for particulate matter, CO, NO2 and VOC during post-monsoon and pre-monsoon seasons. Overall, 432 h person exposure data was collected in this study. The major sources of particulate and gaseous co-pollutants were identified. These directly obtained personal exposure values were then compared to the indirectly estimated integrated exposure values. Personal and integrated exposures gave statistically similar results. Through this study, we have shown that integrated exposure values could closely estimate the personal exposure values for particulate matter that can significantly reduce time and cost involved in personal exposure studies. The lung parameters for all the subjects measured during the pre-monsoon and post-monsoon seasons showed statistically significant reduction during pre-monsoon. This was attributed to the high levels of coarse particles during pre-monsoon.  相似文献

Personal exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is due to both indoor and outdoor sources. Contributions of sources to personal exposure can be quite different from those observed at ambient sampling locations. The primary goal of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of using trace organic speciation data to help identify sources influencing PM2.5 exposure concentrations. Sixty-four 24-h PM2.5 samples were obtained on seven different subjects in and around Boulder, CO. The exposure samples were analyzed for PM2.5 mass, elemental and organic carbon, organic tracer compounds, water-soluble metals, ammonia, and nitrate. This study is the first to measure a broad distribution of organic tracer compounds in PM2.5 personal samples. PM2.5 mass exposure concentrations averaged 8.4 μg m?3. Organic carbon was the dominant constituent of the PM2.5 mass. Forty-four organic species and 19 water-soluble metals were quantifiable in more than half of the samples. Fifty-four organic species and 16 water-soluble metals had measurement signal-to-noise ratios larger than two after blank subtraction. The dataset was analyzed by Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to determine the factors that account for the greatest variance. Eight significant factors were identified; each factor was matched to its likely source based primarily on the marker species that loaded the factor. The results were consistent with the expectation that multiple marker species for the same source loaded the same factor. Meat cooking was an important source of variability. The factor that represents meat cooking was highly correlated with organic carbon concentrations (r = 0.84). The correlation between ambient PM2.5 and PM2.5 exposure was relatively weak (r = 0.15). Time participants spent performing various activities was generally not well correlated with PCA factor scores, likely because activity duration does not measure emissions intensity. The PCA results demonstrate that organic tracers can aid in identifying factors that influence personal exposures to PM2.5.  相似文献

Background

Continuous monitoring of air quality is implemented by government institutions at fixed ambient sites. However, the correlation between fixed site measurements and exposure of individual persons to air contaminants is likely to be weak.

Materials and methods

We measured particulate matter both outdoors and indoors by following the spatial movement of individuals. Sixteen test persons took part and carried a measurement backpack for a 24-h period. The backpack was comprised of a Grimm Aerosol Spectrometer model 1.109, a GPS device, and a video camera for tracking of human behavior. The spectrometer provided information about particle numbers and mass in 32-size classes with a high temporal resolution of 6 s.

Results

The personal exposure of individuals during 24 h could significantly exceed the outdoor particulate matter (PM)10 concentrations measured at the fixed sites. The average 24-h exposure of all test persons for PM10 varied from 27 to 322 ??g m?3. Environmental tobacco smoke and cooking emissions were among the main indoor sources for PM. The amount of particulate matter a test person was exposed to was highly dependent on the spatial behavior and the surrounding microenvironment conditions.

Discussion

Large-scale experiments including personal measurements might help to improve modeling approaches to approximate the actual exposure on a statistically sound basis.  相似文献

An advanced algorithm called positive matrix factorization (PMF) in receptor modeling was used to identify the sources of respirable suspended particulates (RSP) in Hong Kong. The compositional data obtained from the Hong Kong Environmental Protection Department from 1992 to 1994 were analyzed. The species analyzed in this study are Al, Ca, Mg, Pb, Na+, V, Cl, NH4+, SO42−, Br, Mn, Fe, Ni, Zn, Cd, K+, Ba, Cu, and As. Unlike the conventional receptor modeling algorithm, factor analysis PMF only generates non-negative source profiles. To eliminate sulfate from such factors where it is not physically plausible, special penalty terms were included in the model so that sulfate concentrations could be selectively decreased in specified factors. A 9-factor model containing non-zero sulfate concentrations in three factors gives the most satisfactory source profiles. Ammonium sulfate, chloride depleted marine aerosols and crustal aerosols are the three non-zero sulfate sources. Other factors are marine aerosols, non-ferrous smelters, particulate copper, fuel oil burning, vehicular emission and bromide/road dust. The last two sources can be combined as a single source of vehicle/road dust. The compositional profiles of these factors were also developed. The mass profiles obtained can be improved by further refinement of distribution of sulfate in the sources.  相似文献

Modern epidemiology has shown that fluctuations of mortality data are statistically significantly correlated with fluctuations of ambient particulate matter (PM) concentration data. This relation cannot be confounded by exposure to PM of indoor origin because the concentrations of ambient PM are not correlated with concentrations of PM of indoor origin. It has been suggested, given the above understanding, that modern PM exposure measurements and analysis should create separate estimates of exposure to all PM of ambient origin and exposure to all PM of nonambient origin (primarily of indoor origin), and not exposure to total PM. This paper reviews the developments of the form of the general microenvironmental mass balance equation that can be utilized for estimating human exposure to PM of ambient origin and for estimating the portion of total PM exposure that is attributable to nonambient origin PM. The equation is perfectly general and can be applied to conditions of time-varying factors that influence exposure, such as rapidly changing air-exchange rates in a home as doors and windows are opened and closed, and turning on and off air cleaners in a home. It is suggested that this procedure be applied in exposure assessment studies and validated using independent techniques of estimating exposure to PM of ambient origin available in the literature.  相似文献
