Fugitive dust emissions from stockpiles in the open storage yards of industrial sites and the subsequent atmospheric dust dispersion have brought about many ecological and economical problems. This paper introduces a new approach to estimate emission rates using data from Computational Fluid Dynamics simulations. Flow around stockpiles of varying configurations was studied using a previously validated numerical model. Different pile height scenarios, corresponding to a constant material volume and a fixed angle of repose, were exposed to various wind speeds. Flow analysis over the piles showed the importance of using 3D simulations to fully understand the close linkage between flow processes and particles uptake. Data obtained were then integrated in order to evaluate dust emission rates. Results provide evidence to suggest that changing pile configuration can reduce dust emissions. It was found that, for the range of wind conditions and pile dimensions tested, the intermediate pile height configurations lead to a better overall protecting effect from wind and thus were found to produce lower dust emissions.  相似文献

The shelter effect of a windbreak protects aggregate piles and provides a reduction of particle emissions in harbours. RANS (Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations) simulations using three variants of kε (standard k–ε, RNG k–ε and realizable k–ε) turbulence closure models have been performed to analyse wind flow characteristics behind an isolated fence located on a flat surface without roughness elements. The performance of the three turbulence models has been assessed by wind tunnel experiments. Cases of fences with different porosities (φ) have been evaluated using wind tunnel experiments as well as numerical simulations. The aim is to determine an optimum porosity for sheltering effect of an isolated windbreak. A value of 0.35 was found as the optimum value among the studied porosities (φ=0, 0.1, 0.24, 0.35, 0.4, 0.5).  相似文献

Fugitive dust emissions from open stock yards for bulk materials, such as coal or ores, can represent a significant part of overall estimated atmospheric emission on industrial site, as example on steel plant sites. Stockpile topography is known to modify the near field uptake force of the wind through changes of the mean flow. Various studies have shown that aeolian erosion strongly occurs on the stockpile crest, so it appears relevant to carry out a study to analyze the effect on the dust emissions of the stockpile clipping. Three-dimensional numerical simulations were done with the aim of simulating wind flow over different flat-topped pile scenarios, corresponding to a constant material volume. Various wind flow directions were tested to determine its impact on particle emissions. Data obtained from Computational Fluid Dynamics simulations were then integrated in order to estimate the effect of the clipping on the stockpiles dust emission rates by using the EPA's emission factors method. Results provide evidence to suggest that clipping stockpiles does not reduce dust emissions. This study provides to industrial operators some informations on the best geometrical pile characteristics in order to limit particles emissions.  相似文献

A monitoring system for coal panicle dispersion at coal storage yards is necessary to meet environmental standards for the operation of coal fired power plants. We have developed a system having three functions as follows:
  • 1.(1) To measure coal particle concentrations at the first connecting part of belt conveyors.
  • 2.(2) To predict occurrence of coal particle dispersion during stacking.
  • 3.(3) To moisten the coal at the second connecting part of belt conveyors when coal particle dispersion occurs.
The generation of coal dispersion is determined by whether or not the hygroscopic moisture is greater than the critical hygroscopic moisture value for each coal type. Coal particle concentrations are measured using dust meters. In this report, the dust meter readings were related to emission rate of coal particle and dustiness index of coarse dust defined by ASTM D547-41 in order to predict occurrence of coal particle dispersion using dust meters. The adaptability of the system to real coal handling facilities was examined by a model which consisted of belt conveyors, a stacker, connecting parts and the monitoring system. As a result of these experiments, it was demonstrated that coal particle dispersion can be suppressed by means of wetting coal in response to dust meter readings.  相似文献

Open sources are those stationary sources of air pollution too great in extent to be controlled through enclosure or ducting. Open sources of atmospheric particles include: wind erosion, tilling, and prescribed burning of agricultural cropland; surface mining and wind erosion of tailings piles; vehicular travel on both paved and unpaved roads; construction site activity; and forest fires. It is estimated that in 1976 the total open source emissions of particles in the U.S. amounted to over 580 × 106 ton. These estimates indicate that emissions from the two largest open source classes, travel on unpaved roads and agricultural wind erosion, accounted for 86% of this total. The open source emissions in ten states (AZ, CA, KS, MN, MT, NM, ND, OH, SD, TX) contributed 6 2% of the national emissions for 1976.  相似文献

Background, Aims and Scope When joining the European Union on 1st May 2004, Estonia had to conform its legislation to the European Union legislation. In relation with that, also the treatment requirements on end-of-life vehicles proceeding from Directive 2000/53/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 18 September 2000 were established in Estonia for the first time. Since this area was not regulated with law beforehand, there was not any information available about it. The aim of the current survey was to ascertain the condition of scrap yards in mid 2004. In addition to that, also to identify the number of scrap yards operating in Estonia, to classify these by the number of dismantled vehicles and the potential environmental hazard, and to map the locations of car dismantling companies and evaluate their compliance with the valid requirements. Methods The companies that have been registered in the Commercial Registry under the activity code 503090-end-of-life vehicle dismantling were visited and visually reviewed. During the visits, the compliance of scrap yards with the existing requirements was evaluated and it was also attempted to identify how environmentally sound the dismantling technology of every scrap yard owner is. Results and Discussion Altogether, 63 scrap yards operated in Estonia by mid 2004. Twelve of them dismantled more than 100 vehicles, 13 of them 51-99 vehicles and 38 up to 50 vehicles a year. The total annual market capacity on dismantling of vehicles in Estonia is considered to be approx. 10,000 units. There are very few companies dealing only with car dismantling as the main business. Most scrap-yard owners also offer side services, e.g. haulage, car repair and maintenance. The dismantlers are interested in the selling of second-hand spare parts and scrap metal. Only one company out of 63 complied with all the requirements enacted by the relevant decision of the Estonian Minister of Environment. The rest of the scrap yards did not meet the requirements on the site on storage and treatment nor did they have the hazardous waste handling licence or the waste permit. Of the requirements established for the site for storage of end-of-life vehicles, 97% of the scrap yards were surrounded with a fence, 67% had a 24-hour guard, 45% had covered the areas with waterproof cover, but only 3% had an oil trap. Sites for treatment were in a somewhat better condition, these were mostly situated inside the buildings, where floors were covered with waterproof covers. Most of the dismantlers collected the waste oil and waste fluids into separate vessels, but there were a number of dismantlers who did not know of existence of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) in car air conditioning systems and the availability of mercury in sensors belonging in passenger safety systems. Proceeding from the general condition of the scrap yard, the rest of 62 scarp yards were distributed between two empirical parameters - 'rather environmentally hazardous' or 'rather not environmentally hazardous'. As a matter of fact, 17% of scrap yards turned out 'rather environmentally hazardous'. Conclusion Out of the scrap yards operating in Estonia, only one is compliant with the requirements set up by Directive 2000/53/EC. Another 62 appeared during the review to be sites of potential environmental pollution. In order to comply with environmental requirements and get the hazardous waste treatment license, the scrap yard owners have to invest into state-of-the-art dismantling and environment protection equipment. The main obstacle to reach the environmentally sound scrap-yard is the high investment cost and the black market for spare parts. Recommendation and Outlook As the correction of the market in end-of-life vehicle treatment started after the adoption of Directive 2000/53/EC, the environmental authorities have to look after the ongoing correction. It is because there is still a demand for cheap spare parts and it makes it attractive to dismantle the vehicles out of scrap-yards by licensees.  相似文献

When considering the modelling of small particle dispersion in the lower part of the Atmospheric Boundary Layer (ABL) using Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes simulations, the particle paths depend on the velocity profile and on the turbulence kinetic energy, from which the fluctuating velocity components are derived to predict turbulent dispersion. It is therefore important to correctly reproduce the ABL, both for the velocity profile and the turbulence kinetic energy profile. For RANS simulations with the standard kε model, Richards and Hoxey (1993. Appropriate boundary conditions for computational wind engineering models using the k–ε turbulence model. Journal of Wind Engineering and Industrial Aerodynamics 46–47, 145–153.) proposed a set of boundary conditions which result in horizontally homogeneous profiles. The drawback of this method is that it assumes a constant profile of turbulence kinetic energy, which is not always consistent with field or wind tunnel measurements. Therefore, a method was developed which allows the modelling of a horizontally homogeneous turbulence kinetic energy profile that is varying with height.By comparing simulations performed with the proposed method to simulations performed with the boundary conditions described by Richards and Hoxey (1993. Appropriate boundary conditions for computational wind engineering models using the k–ε turbulence model. Journal of Wind Engineering and Industrial Aerodynamics 46–47, 145–153.), the influence of the turbulence kinetic energy on the dispersion of small particles over flat terrain is quantified.  相似文献

A 20-m Asian dust monitoring tower was installed at Erdene in Dornogobi, Mongolia in later 2008, which is one of the high Asian dust source regions in the Asian domain, to investigate meteorological conditions for the dust events. The tower was equipped with meteorological sensors (temperature, humidity and wind speed at four levels, precipitation and pressure near the surface), radiation sensors (solar radiation, net radiation) and soil measurement sensors (soil moisture and soil temperature at three levels and soil heat flux at one level) and turbulent measurement (sonic anemometer) at the 8 m height and PM10 concentration measurement (beta guage) at the 3 m height. Measurement was made for a full year of 2009. The observed data indicated that dust events occur all year round with the maximum hourly mean maximum concentration of 4107 μg m?3 in the early May to a minimum of 92 μg m?3 in later August. It was found that the dust concentration at this site is directly related to the wind speed exceeding the threshold wind speed (likewise the corresponding friction velocity) during the winter to early spring. However, the observed dust concentration is not only related to the wind speed exceeding the threshold wind speed but also to the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) during the late spring to the late autumn due to the growth of vegetation. It was also found that the surface soil moisture content does not affect the dust concentration due to the relatively short residence time of the soil moisture in the surface soil. The presently monitored data can be used to verify parameters used in the Asian Dust Aerosol Model (ADAM) that is the operational forecasting dust model in the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA).  相似文献

Experiments have been conducted in a wind tunnel to measure the emission factor of re-entrained particles from a dry or wetted dust sample with a smooth or rough surface. Effects of wind velocities and water contents in the sample on the emission factor also were investigated. The results show that re-entrainment of particles can be controlled efficiently in a certain period of time when the surface watering density is between 60 and 80 g/m2 at a wind velocity from 7 to 15 m/sec for both smooth and rough surfaces. After the effective period is elapsed, which depends on wind speeds and environmental conditions, water will eventually evaporate, and re-entrainment starts to occur again. The experimental water evaporation rates at different wind speeds are in good agreement with theoretical values. After watering for 210, 130, and 110 min at average wind velocities of 0, 2, and 4 m/sec, respectively, the dust sample must be replenished with water to avoid dust re-entrainment.  相似文献

We have designed, fabricated and tested a size specific inlet to retrofit the High-Volume Sampler to give a nominal 50-percent effectiveness diameter (d50) of 6 μm and no transmission of particles 10 μm or larger (do = 10 μm). Actual test values were: d50 = 5.85 μm, σ16 = 1.32, σ84 = 1.35, independent of wind speed from 2 to 24 km h−1. The principal collecting surface for oversized particles is a porous material impregnated with oil, thus indefinitely preventing particle bounce or reentrainment. The inlet characteristics were found to be independent of orientation relative to the wind, as well as inadvertent 10 percent variations in flow rate. The mass distribution on the collection substrate is uniform within 3 percent. The inlet totally prevents deposition of particles on the collection substrate when the sampler is not operating.  相似文献

The concentration and the composition of dust in the indoor environment has been associated with reported symptoms of the sick building syndrome. Levels of airborne concentrations of dust particles are well known. However, the relation to dust on surfaces for office environments are not well described. In this study, 662 measurements were performed of surface dust concentrations on hard surfaces in 19 buildings within Harvard University based on a sticking gelatine foil method. The measure is the dust covered area of the surface as a percentage. In three offices, the build-up of dust on surfaces was measured for a period of five days. Close to these surfaces the airborne PM2.5 and PM10 particle mass concentrations were measured simultanously. A significant correlation between the dust build-up and the difference between the PM10 and the PM2.5 was established. The particle size distribution was measured by means of an Aerodynamic Particle Sizer. The mean dust build-up normalized with the measured PM10 was approximately four times higher than the equivalent calculated by a deposition model. This may in part be due to the effect of preferred orientation when particles settle to a surface. Different data for dust on surfaces and airborne particles in offices were compared. The levels of airborne particles in offices in Europe seem to be higher than the levels in the US.  相似文献

Aerosol particles were collected for 1 year, starting in April 2003, in rural areas of Kanazawa, Ishikawa, Japan to understand the role of Asian dust as a long-range transporter of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Three sampling intervals were designated in this study, namely: (1) Dust period 1 (March 11–19, 2003); (2) Dust period 2 (March 28, 2003–April 9, 2003); and (3) Dust period 3 (April 9, 2004–April 25, 2004). The Asian dust particles are predominantly in the coarse particle size range (2.1–11 μm). PAH analyses were performed separately on both the coarse and fine (<1.1 μm) particle ranges. Seasonal trends in PAH concentrations for coarse and fine particles showed that the Asian dust particles in Dust period 3 contained significant amounts of less-volatile PAHs such as benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) and benzo[g,h,i]perylene (BghiP). A kinetic model developed in this study shows that almost none of these PAHs would be accumulated on Asian dust particles in the atmosphere, due to their extremely slow adsorption rates. These PAHs would have to originate from PAH-polluted soil particles around industrialized areas. Back trajectory analyses suggest that the Asian dust in Dust period 3 came from loess regions around industrialized areas. This indicates that geologic materials play a significant role in the atmospheric circulation of PAHs.  相似文献

The concentrations of air pollutants such as nitrogen oxides and ozone characterised by very fast chemical reactions can significantly vary within urban street-canyon due to the short distances between sources and receptor. With the primary objective to analyse this issue, NO, NO2, NOx, O3, BTX, and wind flow field were continuously measured for 1 week at two heights (a street-level yard and a 25-m-high rooftop) in an urban canyon in Suzhou (China). The yard ozone concentrations were found to be up to six times lower than on the roof. Different frequency distributions (FD), dynamical and chemical processes of the pollutant variations from yard to roof are discussed to explain the findings. The predominant factors for the dissimilar pollutant vertical diffusion at the two measurement locations were associated to dissimilar fluid-dynamic and heterogeneous removal effects that likely induced dissimilar ozone chemical processes relative to NOx and BTX precursors.  相似文献

A new approach is developed to predict the volatilization loss of the pure liquid and the volatilization rates of organic solutes with different Henry's law constants (H) under wind speed. The tested compounds include eight volatile organic compounds for pure liquid and the forty-one organic solutes with different H compounds are divided into three groups that span seven H orders. The wind speed is set from 0 to 6.0 ms?1. A characteristic parameter ε was established to estimate volatilization loss of pure organic compounds. The mass transfer coefficient (KOL) ratios of the organic solutes, under both wind speed and still conditions, are applied to describe the volatilization characteristics of the selected solutes. The curve profile for KOL ratios and ε values relative to the selected wind speed can be divided into two stages, the sharp-rise stage and the stable-linearity stage. The critical finding is the ε values for the different organic compounds under a specific wind speed approach a constant. The changes in the curve profile of the KOL ratios are similar to the ε values of the pure organic compounds. It is also found the relatively lower H compounds exhibit a sensitive wind effect on the KOL ratios. The KOL ratios of the relatively higher H compounds indicate a similar linear increase with the increasing wind speed in the two stages. Accordingly, concentrations of the organic compounds at the interface are thought to the primary factor. The obtained results could be a good reference to estimate volatilization loss of the organic solutes or the organic solvents under different wind speed conditions.  相似文献

An empirical emission model based on experimental data was proposed. The total suspended particulates (TSP) emission model obtained by using stepwise multiple-regression analysis was significant (p<0.001); moreover, the relatively high value of R-squared (R2=0.85), which indicated that four parameters included in the model (air temperature, soil silt content, soil moisture content, and wind speed) accounted for the particulate emissions from a sandbank. The results of the multiple-regression analysis demonstrated that the TSP emission factors increased with increase in air temperature, soil silt content and wind speed, but were inversely affected by the soil moisture content. The model equation verified the experimental results and proved itself to be an important tool in predicting the dust emissions from a sandbank under strong wind conditions.  相似文献

This paper discusses about the quantitative effect of windbreak fences on wind velocity in the reclaimed land at Saemangeum in South Korea. Windbreak fences were constructed in the reclaimed land to reduce the wind velocity to prevent the generation and diffusion of dust. However, up to this time, no in-depth studies were conducted to quantitatively measure the effect of the windbreak fences on wind velocity thus an optimum windbreak structure is not yet determined. Using CFD simulations, the effects of fence porosity, fence height, and the distance between the adjacent fences were investigated. A wind tunnel experiment was initially conducted and data gathered were used to develop the CFD models. From the experiments and CFD simulations, the overall percentage difference of the measured velocities was 7.20% which is generally acceptable to establishing the reliability of the CFD models. The reduction effect on wind velocity was measured in between the adjacent fences up to a height of 0.6 m from the ground surface. In terms of porosity ( = 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6), 0.2 was found to be the optimum value. Conversely, the effect of fence height (0.6, 0.8 and 1.0 m) showed no significant difference; therefore, 0.6 m height is recommended. In addition, the reduction effect of distance between the adjacent fences (2, 4 and 6 m) on wind velocity having a 0.2 porosity has decreased to about 75% regardless of the distance. In the case of the reclaimed land in Saemangeum, a decrease of 75% can prevent the generation and diffusion of dusts. However, the source of dusts is very large. Therefore, constructing an array of windbreak with 6 m distance between them is deemed necessary.  相似文献

The dispersion of a tracer gas emitted from a short stack on a cubical building was investigated using field and wind tunnel experiments. Air samples were obtained on the roof and the leeward side of the building. Dilution data were compared with estimates of minimum dilution (Dmin) obtained with design formulas of Wilson/Chui/Lamb and Halitsky. The Halitsky model produced conservative predictions of Dmin. Estimates of Dmin obtained with the Wilson/Chui/Lamb model were in reasonable agreement with the field data. Wind tunnel dilution values were usually within a factor of two of the field data. The accuracy of the wind tunnel data improved as distance from the source increased. Wind tunnel dilution was found to be strongly dependent on the ratio of exhaust speed to wind speed, M, particularly for M values in the range of 2–4. This dependence is believed to be associated with the wind tunnel modelling of the stack exhaust, and is thus probably not a feature of the full-scale situation.  相似文献

The extraction of minerals from surface mines and quarries can produce significant fugitive dust emissions as a result of site activities such as blasting, road haulage, loading, crushing and stockpiling. If uncontrolled, these emissions can present serious environmental, health, safety and operational issues impacting both site personnel and the wider community. The dispersion of pollutant emissions within the atmosphere is principally determined by the background wind systems characterized by the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL). This paper presents an overview of the construction and solution of a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model to replicate the development of the internal ventilation regime within a surface quarry excavation due to the presence of a neutral ABL above this excavation. This model was then used to study the dispersion and deposition of fugitive mineral dust particles generated during rock blasting operations. The paths of the mineral particles were modelled using Lagrangian particle tracking. Particles of four size fractions were released from five blast locations for eight different wind directions. The study concluded that dependent on the location of the bench blast within the quarry and the direction of the wind, a mass fraction of between 0.3 and 0.6 of the emitted mineral particles was retained within the quarry. The retention was largest when the distance from the blast location to the downwind pit boundary was greatest.  相似文献
