Two important issues in the studies of harmful algae include ecological role of the toxic compounds and their fate through the food web. The aims of this study were to determine whether the production of domoic acid is a strategy evolved to avoid predation and the role of copepods in the fate of this toxic compound through the food web. The copepod Acartia clausi was fed with single and mixed cultures of the toxic diatom Pseudo-nitzschia multiseries and the non-toxic diatom Pseudo-nitzschia delicatissima. Ingestion rate as a function of diatom abundance was the same for the toxic and non-toxic Pseudo-nitzschia species, indicating no selective feeding behaviour against P. multiseries. The toxins ingested by the copepods did not affect mortality, feeding behaviour, egg production and egg hatching of the copepods. Copepods assimilated the 4.8% of the total domoic acid ingested. Although the amount of toxins daily detoxificated by the copepods was 63.6%, the copepods accumulated domoic acid in their tissues. We conclude that domoic acid is not toxic for copepods and, probably for this reason, this toxin does not act as feeding deterrent for copepods. However, even though the production of domoic acid has apparently not evolved to deter predation, copepods may play an important role on the fate of this toxic compound through the marine food web.  相似文献

Quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) for the identification and quantification of microbes has become a common tool for the study of harmful algal blooms (HABs). We developed a qPCR method for the diatom genus Pseudo-nitzschia. Several species of this genus form toxic blooms through the production of the neurotoxin domoic acid (DA). Outbreaks of toxicity attributed to DA along the US west coast have caused sickness and death of marine mammals and seabirds through food web contamination. The method developed here quantifies Pseudo-nitzschia spp. at low abundances in natural samples, thereby, providing a method to improve our understanding of the environmental conditions leading to blooms of these species. This has been accomplished previously by techniques for identification and quantification that are slow and laborious compared to qPCR. The approach was successfully tested and validated using eight species of Pseudo-nitzschia and 33 non-target organisms and employed to follow local bloom dynamics.  相似文献

An integrated approach using the contamination levels and DNA damage in mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) was applied in order to assess the chemical contamination in a marina (Eastern coastline of Aegean Sea). Mussels, which were harvested from a reference site (Foca), were transplanted into a marina situated along the coast of Izmir Bay. The transplanted mussels were collected at the 14th, 30th and 60th day of the experimental period. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) levels (27–51?ng?g?1?wet?weight) detected in the mussels were similar to the levels detected in other coastal areas of the Mediterranean Sea. The marina’s sediment was found to be contaminated with PAHs (∑PAH?=?25?µg?g?1) of pyrolytic origin and may become a source of pollution and a threat to the marine environment. In order to assess the DNA damage, the haemolymph and gill cells of the mussels were used for the comet analysis and considered as an indicator of exposure to genotoxic chemicals including 16 PAH compounds and metals. The highest levels of DNA damage expressed as %Tail-DNA (%T-DNA) were observed at the end of the experiment (21.5% T-DNA). The correlation analyses conducted between 2-, 3-, 4-ring PAHs in mussels and %T-DNA in haemolymph and gill cells showed a significant positive correlation. This investigation confirmed that transplanted mussel can be a useful tool to determine PAH contamination in marinas.  相似文献

An oceanographic transet,, extending from Yugoslavia across the Northern Adriatic Sea to the Po delta in Italy, was occupied during 1972 and 1973 to establish the effect of Po river discharge on the phytoplankton communities of the region. Density distribution showed distinct seasonal features: a winter-spring period of low stability throughout the water column, and a summer period of stratification. The total water-column plant nutrients (nitrate, nitrite, phosphate, silicate) showed a 1.3 to 4.5-fold decrease eastward, with semi-eutrophic conditions restricted to an area off the Po delta. Nannoplankton usually dominated the phytoplankton community, in terms of cell density, surface chlorophyll a concentrations, and surface primary production rates. However, all significant maxima in these characteristics resulted from increases in the microplankton component. Changes in the frequency of major microplankton groups characterized three periods of the annual cycle: September–December, neritic, temperate diatom flora with some littoral elements (e.g. Nitzschia seriata); January–May, neritic, temperate diatom flora of different composition (e.g. Lauderia borealis, Skeletonema costatum); May–August, dinoflagellates (e.g. Prorocentrum micans) at western stations and dinoflagellates plus neritic, warm-water diatoms at eastern stations. The seasonal cycle was characterized by spring and fall maxima tending to coincide with maximum Po river discharge and/or periods of low water-column stability and vertical mixing. The higher nutrient input at western stations was correlated with the co-dominance of only a few species of microplankton during bloom periods, suggesting that these species (S. costatum, N. seriata, and 5 others) can serve as indicators of eutrophic conditions in this region. Assimilation ratios of both the micro- and nannoplankton suggested borderline nutrient conditions. Phosphate was implicated as the limiting nutrient.  相似文献

In highly seasonal intertidal habitats, changes in temperature through the year may drive substantial shifts in feeding and growth rates of organisms. For the dogwhelk Nucella lapillus, attacking and consuming Mytilus edulis mussels can take hours or days, depending on temperature. Handling time of dogwhelks feeding on mussels is therefore greatly affected by ocean temperature. I recorded attack time in the laboratory, partitioned into drilling and consumption time, for juvenile dogwhelks across a range of seawater temperatures representative of field seawater temperatures during the main growing seasons of summer and autumn. The combined length of a drilling attack and subsequent ingestion time tripled across the 10 °C decline in water temperatures from July through November, driven primarily by an increase in ingestion time. The observed reduction in handling time, coupled with projected sea surface warming in New England by the end of the twenty-first century, could extend the length of the growing season for Nucella and subsequently have cascading effects on the prey community.  相似文献

Stable oxygen and carbon isotope profiles ('18Oskeletal and '13Cskeletal), taken along the direction of growth from the umbo to the shell margin in shells of the pinnid Pinna nobilis, were used to reconstruct sea surface temperatures (SST) in the south-east Mediterranean and ontogenetic records of metabolic CO2 incorporation. Comparison of the seasonal cycle of SST, predicted from the '18Oskeletal record of a small (young) rapidly growing pinnid and temperature measured with a continuous in situ recorder showed that P. nobilis calcifies under isotopic equilibrium with surrounding seawater, thus indicating that P. nobilis shells can be used as a reliable predictor of SST. A 10-year SST record for the south-east Mediterranean was reconstructed from the shell profiles of four pinnid shells of different sizes and ages collected in 1995 and 1996. Reliable resolution of the seasonal SST could only be achieved during the first 4 years of shell growth. As the pinnids grew older, the temperature record was poorly resolved because the shell growth had diminished with age, resulting in time-averaging of the record. The amplitude of the generated seasonal temperature cycle compared favourably (DŽ°C) with a long-term temperature record from northern Mediterranean waters. Clear seasonal cycles in '13Cskeletal were observed with an amplitude of ~1.0‰, similar to the calculated seasonal changes in '13C of seawater (0.6‰) overlying seagrass meadows. An ontogenetic trend towards less positive '13Cskeletal values was too large to be attributed to any decrease in '13C in seawater resulting from the invasion of anthropogenic CO2. It is suggested that the temporal changes of '13Cskeletal are due to incorporation of respiratory CO2 into the extrapallial fluid and reflect changes in the metabolic activity of the pinnid rather than changes in the isotopic composition of dissolved inorganic carbon within the surrounding seawater.  相似文献

Health risks of heavy metals in the mediterranean mussels as seafood   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In recent years, mussels have already become commercially important seafood species worldwide. Mussels accumulate a wide range of metals in their soft tissue. Thus, the determination of accumulated concentrations of heavy metals, such as Pb, Cd, Hg, and As, in mussels is essential because of their usage as seafood and the potential adverse effects of their consumption on human health. In this review, these issues are presented and discussed using the Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis as an example. M. galloprovincialis is very efficient at converting low value victuals into high quality animal protein. The production of M. galloprovincialis in Mediterranean countries has been increasing rapidly, but Spain is still the largest producer of mussels. Only China has a larger production of these mussels than Spain. M. galloprovincialis is a filter feeding animal and accumulates a wide range of metals from their environment. The metal concentrations in the soft tissue of M. galloprovincialis are indicators of marine ecosystems contamination. In the same time, the bioaccumulation of heavy metals remains an issue concerning the consumption of mussels. Thereby, the Cd, Pb, Hg, and As concentration measurement in mussel soft tissue as a seafood have become significant. A review of literature data revealed large variations in the Cd, Pb, Hg, and As concentrations in M. galloprovincialis from their endemic areas, e.g., Mediterranean, Adriatic, and Black Sea, and the concentrations of these toxic metals were generally in the following order: As > Pb > Cd > Hg. The guidelines on heavy metals for seafood safety set by different countries and associations are reviewed. Comparison of the published data with European legislation showed that the levels of the heavy metals generally did not exceed the existing limits in all the mussels analyzed, excluding mussels from hot spots, such as lagoons and harbors, in the Mediterranean, Adriatic, and Black Sea.  相似文献

The diet of the portunid crab Liocarcinus depurator (L.) in soft-bottom areas of the Ría de Arousa (Galicia, north-west Spain) was studied by analysis of stomach contents, and by comparison of habitats of contrasting abundance, composition and diversity of prey communities. Monthly samples were taken from July 1989 to June 1990 (N=3747) in mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis) raft-culture areas and central channel zones. Ninety-two food items were identified: crustaceans, molluscs, polychaetes, ophiuroids and fishes were the dominant prey. The raft epifauna and the mussels constituted the dominant group of prey in the raft areas and inner channel station (the epifaunal crab Pisidia longicornis comprised 30 to 52% of the diet), whereas the benthic macroinfauna was the dominant food component in the mid-outer channel (polychaetes constituted 32% of the diet). In the epifaunal community, diet selection for P. longicornis was positive and for amphipods was negative, whereas within the infauna diet selection for bivalves and ophiuroids was positive and for polychaetes negative or neutral. The seasonal importance of P. longicornis and M. galloprovincialis varied in the diet of L. depurator parallel to seasonal activities connected with mussel culture (seeding, thinning, harvesting) that determine the availability of prey from the rafts. Major changes in the composition of the diet related to the life history of L. depurator occurred during ontogeny. In the raft zones, consumption of mussels and fishes increased with increasing body size, while the consumption of Natantia, non-decapod crustaceans, gastropods, polychaetes Pectinariidae and plants decreased with increasing crab size. Maximum consumption of P. longicornis was by L. depurator individuals of intermediate size (15 to 44 mm carapace width). Stomach fullness (measured as dry weight of food) increased with increasing body size, but with negative allometry. During the late pre-moult and early post-moult periods L. depurator did not consume any food; maximum stomach fullness was recorded for the late post-moult and intermoult stages. Female food consumption decreased during egg incubation. Food consumption was greater in autumn and winter than at other seasons; this appears to be related to seasonal changes in reproduction and moulting.  相似文献

The ice nucleation temperatures of different homogenised organs of the mussel Mytilus edulis L. were examined. The stomach and the hemolymph had the highest nucleation temperatures. In the homogenised stomach the nucleation temperatures were fairly constant throughout the year, whereas the nucleation temperatures of the hemolymph increased in the cold season. Bacterial growth experiments, microfiltration, and experiments using antibiotics indicated that the nucleators were not of bacterial origin. The nucleation temperatures of natural seawater were approximately −9 °C, whereas seawater made from distilled water and sea salt had nucleation temperatures of about −17 °C. The nucleation temperatures of the seawater were reduced when the seawater was filtered by the mussels. However, no clear indication that the nucleators in the stomach were obtained from the seawater was found. Stomach homogenates from mussels kept in nucleator-free water had the same supercooling points as stomach homogenates from mussels kept in natural seawater. This indicates that the nucleators in the stomach are not obtained from the seawater. The temperature and light conditions examined in the present study did not significantly influence the hemolymph ice nucleation temperatures of mussels kept in the laboratory. Within Monterey Bay, California, USA, the food web transfer of domoic acid (DA), a neurotoxin produced by diatoms of the genus Pseudo-nitzschia, has led to major mortality events of marine mammals and birds. Less visible, and less well known, is whether invertebrates and fish associated with the benthos are also affected by blooms of DA-producing Pseudo-nitzschia spp. This study examines the presence of DA in benthic flatfish offshore of Davenport, California, (37°0′36″N, 122°13′12″W) and within Monterey Bay, California (36°45′0″N, 122°1′48″W), including species that feed primarily in the sediment (benthic-feeding) and species that feed primarily in the water column (benthopelagic-feeding). Flatfish caught between 10 December 2002 and 17 November 2003 at depths of 30–180 m had concentrations of DA in the viscera ranging from 3 to 26 μg DA g−1 of viscera. Although the DA values reported are relatively low, benthic-feeding flatfish were frequently contaminated with DA, especially as compared with the frequency of contamination of flatfish species that feed in the water column. Furthermore, on days in which both benthic-feeding and benthopelagic-feeding flatfish were collected, the former had significantly higher concentrations of DA in the viscera. Curlfin turbot, Pleuronicthys decurrens, the flatfish with both the highest level and frequency of DA contamination, are reported to feed exclusively on polychaetes, suggesting that these invertebrates may be an important vector of the toxin in benthic communities and may pose a risk to other benthic-feeding organisms. An intensive field study of three depth zones in 1980 revealed different seasonal patterns of growth in the deposit-feedingPontoporeia affinis Lindström andP. femorata Kröyer (Crustacea, Amphipoda) in the northern Baltic Sea, SW coast of Finland. The study areas were situated in the outer archipelago at depths of 21 to 25 m and 26 to 30 m and in the sea zone at 46 m. InP. affinis growth rates decreased with increasing depth, but the same seasonal pattern was evident at all depths: growth began in spring, increased to a maximum in early or midsummer, and decreased again or ceased altogether by autumn. In the archipelago the 1 + age group attained its maximum growth rate in May–June and the 0 + age group clearly later, in June–July. InP. femorata the growth rates of all age groups were more even, having only slight peaks in summer and autumn. The seasonal variation in growth ofPontoporeia spp. was not directly dependent on sedimentation of the spring phytoplankton bloom, but was more closely connected with seasonality of temperature and total benthic metabolism. Because estimates of annual food consumption byPontoporeia spp. exceeded bacterial and meiofaunal production, these species must have derived the majority of their energy demands from dead organic detritus. BothPontoporeia species are probably strictly food-limited in the area. The cessation of growth seemed to coincide with the approach of a plateau of total biomass, suggesting food competition. Different timing of growth between the age groups ofP. affinis suggests differences in sources or utilization of food; differences betweenP. affinis adP. femorata may indicate interspecific competition or different food.  相似文献

The sublethal effect of silver and chromium on some biochemical constituents was studied in the green mussel Perna viridis. The results revealed an overall reduction in total protein, total DNA, total RNA, glycogen, protein bound sugars and total lipid in the gill, hepatopancreas, and ovary of the mussels exposed to metals individually and in combination when compared with control. It was apparent that mussels exposed to mixtures of metals exhibited highly significant (P?P?P?相似文献

The relative effects of NH 4 + (N) and PO 4 3- (P) on growth rate, photosynthetic capacity (Pmax), and levels of chemical constituents of the red macroalga Gracilaria tikvahiae McLachlan were assayed during winter and summer, 1983 in inshore waters of the Florida Keys by using in-situ cage cultures. During winter, both N and P enrichment enhanced growth over that of ambient seawater; however, P rather than N accounted for more (60%) of the increased winter growth. During summer, P, but not N, enhanced growth over ambient seawater and accounted for 80% of increased growth. Similarly, Pmax was enhanced by both P and N during winter (but mostly by P) and only by P during summer. Elevated C:P, C:N and N:P ratios of G. tikvahiae tissue during winter, but only C:P and N:P ratios during summer, support the pattern of winter N and P limitation and summer P-limitation. This seasonal pattern of N vs P limited growth of G. tikvahiae appears to be a response to seasonally variable dissolved inorganic N (twofold greater concentrations of NH 4 + and NO 3 - during summer compared to winter) and constantly low to undetectable concentrations of PO 4 3- . Mean C:P and N:P ratios of G. tikvahiae tissue during the study were 1 818 and 124, respectively, values among the highest reported for macroalgae.  相似文献

Blue mussels, Mytilus edulis L., were collected at a site in Trondheimsfjordon, Norway in 1980 and 1981. The mussels isolate themselves from the ambient seawater for long periods in winter. When isolated, the mussels maintain a high osmotic concentration in the mantle fluid as the external salinity drops. The mussels display anaerobic metabolism when they are isolated. The isolation response is likely to be favourable to the mussels, with regard both to the energy budget and the freezing tolerance.  相似文献

Brachidontes pharaonis (Fisher P, 1870) is an Indo-Pacific mussel that has colonized the Mediterranean Sea via the Suez Canal. Mussels may have migrated by natural dispersal of pelagic larvae, or they may have been transported on the hulls of ships, or in ballast water, or by some combination of these. Mitochondrial COI sequences (618 bp) from 101 mussels from six localities in the central and eastern Mediterranean Sea and from one site in the Red Sea were used to describe population structure. Analysis of molecular variance indicated that frequencies differed among populations, and that 92% of the variation resided within populations. The majority of haplotypes were private alleles. No simple pattern of longitudinal variation was detected for haplotype frequencies, haplotype diversity, or nucleotide diversity. A variety of tree-building algorithms (NJ, MP, ME) gave consistent results, showing two sister groups. One clade had a leucine (L-form) and the other one a methionine (M-form) at the 30th amino acid. These sympatric forms were detected within all localities and they had similar frequencies in males and females. The M- and L-form were separated by a 7.3% sequence divergence, indicating that this is an ancient polymorphism. Closely related species of mussels had exclusively the L-form, so we infer that the M-form evolved from the L-form lineage of B. pharaonis, probably in the northern portion of the Red Sea. Neutrality tests detected an excess of rare mutations, a pattern of variation expected in expanding populations. Patterns of variation detected by Tajima’s D suggest that some form of balancing selection has maintained this polymorphism.  相似文献

In Ireland, mussels on exposed rocky shores constitute an interbreeding mixture of two forms of mussels,Mytilus edulis L. and the Mediterranean musselM. galloprovincialis Lmk. This paper presents an in-depth analysis, carried out between October 1984 and December 1986, of genetic variability at two partially diagnostic loci,Odh andEst-D, in two exposed-shore populations ofMytilus spp. in the west of Ireland. Significant differences at theOdh locus were observed in the genetic composition of adult mussels from different tidal levels. These differences were repeatable whether one was analysing replicate samples at a single point in time, samples collected at different points in time, i.e., in different years, or samples collected from different shores. Mussels recruiting to artificial substrates set out for a period of one month at different tidal levels at one of these sites were also observed to be genetically different; mussels higher up the shore exhibited higher frequencies of those alleles characteristically at high frequency inM. galloprovincialis for both theOdh andEst-D loci. Hence, the genetic differences observed in adult mussels are much more exaggerated in juveniles and are already apparent within the first month of benthic life. Possible reasons for the observed microgeographic differentiation are discussed. It is concluded that the observed genetic differences between mussels at different tidal levels arise either in the pelagic/attachment stage or very shortly after settlement.  相似文献

The osmo-ionoregulatory responses of sub-adult Port Jackson sharks, Heterodontus portusjacksoni (Meyer, 1793), and the stingaree Trygonoptera testacea (Müller and Henle, 1841), were investigated following the transfer from full-strength seawater (100% SW) to either 75 or 50% SW for up to 168 h. The plasma osmotic pressure was similarly reduced in both species and remained slightly hyper-osmotic to the diluted seawater after 168 h. The increase in the body weight of H.␣portusjacksoni transferred to diluted seawater was double that of T.testacea, with the greater haemodilution reflected by a short-term reduction in haematocrit and in haemoglobin concentration. The haemodilution exhibited by H. portusjacksoni also resulted in a greater reduction in plasma [Na], [Cl], [urea] and [trimethylamine oxide] compared with T. testacea. The ability of T. testacea to minimize body-weight gain in diluted seawater was most probably due to increased net water efflux. The persistent elevation in the body weight of both species, despite the apparent recovery of plasma-water volume, was indicative of elevated tissue water. Chronic exposure of H. portusjacksoni to 50% SW altered erythrocyte ion concentrations and plasma/erythrocyte ion ratios, which could have serious implications for cellular homeostasis, respiratory gas transport and acid-base status. The greater control of water and ionic status exhibited by T.testacea, compared with that of H.portusjacksoni, allows the stingarees to penetrate into the more dilute, upper estuarine waters. Vertical profiles of physical, chemical and phytoplanktonic parameters are described, at the level of the thermocline, in the area of Banyuls-sur-Mer, France. The results show that the thermocline divides two masses of water: (1) Mediterranean surface water with low nutrient concentrations and a salinity below 38.00 ‰; (2) deep, nutrient-rich upwelled water (N?NO3 >3 μat-g·l-1, P?PO4>0.3 μat-g·l-1, >38.30 ‰ S), which comes from the upper limit of the Mediterranean intermediate water, usually located at the 200 m level. Consequently, conditions are suitable for high production rates at the bottom of the thermocline, where Chl a is above 0.5 mg·m-3; dominant species are Nitzschia delicatissima and N. pungens. A diagram is presented explaining the different effects of the pycnoclines on primary production: eutrophication at the pycnocline levels is the result of passive accumulation of phytoplankton and organic matter during sedimentation, and/or of reduced diffusion of nutrients from deep waters towards the surface.  相似文献

Recent studies have emphasised that organisms can experience physiological stress well within their geographic range limits. Developing methods for mechanistically predicting the presence, absence and physiological performance of organisms is therefore important because of the ongoing effects of climate change. In this study, we merged a biophysical–ecological (BE) model that estimates the aquatic (high tide) and aerial (low tide) body temperatures of Mytilus galloprovincialis with a Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) model to predict growth, reproduction and mortality of this Mediterranean mussel in both intertidal and subtidal environments. Using weather and chlorophyll-a data from three Mediterranean sites along the Italian coasts, we show that predictions of sublethal and lethal (acute) stress can potentially explain the observed distribution (both presence and absence) of mussels in the intertidal and subtidal zones, and the maximum size of animals in the subtidal zones. Importantly, our results suggest that different mechanisms limit the intertidal distribution of mussels, and that these mechanisms do not follow a simple latitudinal gradient. At the northernmost site (Palermo), M. galloprovincialis appears to be excluded from the intertidal zone due to persistent exposure to lethal aerial temperatures, whereas at the southernmost sites (Porto Empedocle and Lampedusa) sublethal stress is the most important driver of mussel intertidal distribution. Our predictions provide a set of hypotheses for future work on the role of climate change in limiting intertidal distribution of mussels in the Mediterranean.  相似文献

The rate of uptake of Endosulfan by Mytilus edulis L. exposed to pesticide concentrations of 0.1, 0.5, and 1.0 mg/l, and its subsequent elution on removal to clean sea water, was investigated. Higher residue levels were recorded for mussels exposed to higher concentrations of the pesticide, but concentration factors were reduced. There was a rapid initial fall in tissue residue levels on transfer to clean sea water due, it is suggested, to elution of Endosulfan adsorbed on particulate matter assimilated in the gut. The spawning period was prolonged at higher concentrations and, at 1.0 mg/l, the onset of spawning was delayed, possibly due to interference with gamonic action. At 0.1 mg/l, the minor protraction of the spawning period may reflect the effect of experimental tank conditions. No seasonal trend was obvious, and there was an exaggeration of the expected fall in condition in mussels exposed to higher concentrations of Endosulfan. In controls, the expected seasonal trend was reduced.  相似文献
