During April 1999 and March 2000, intensive field campaigns were performed on a mid-level mountain (Rax, 1644 m a.s.l.) in Central Europe both under out-of-cloud and in-cloud conditions. The black carbon (BC) content of both aerosol and cloud water as well as BC scavenging efficiencies of Rax clouds were measured. As a tracer for the non-carbonaceous aerosol, sulfate was used. Although BC concentrations on Rax were low (April 1999 out-of-cloud average: 0.43 μg/m3, March 2000: 0.72 μg/m3), the BC mass fraction of the aerosol was fairly high (1999: 3.5%, 2000: 6.4%). Average BC concentrations in cloud water were 1.09 μg/ml (1999) and 1.4 μg/ml (2000). These values are far higher than literature values, but comparable to those found in an earlier study (J. Geophys. Res. 105 (D20) (2000) 24637) at a high-level mountain (Sonnblick, 3106 m a.s.l.) some 200 km distant from Rax. The average BC scavenging efficiency of the Rax clouds in March 2000 was 0.54. The increase of scavenging efficiency with increasing liquid water content of the clouds found earlier on Sonnblick for sulfate and aerosol carbon (J. Atmos. Chem 35 (2000) 33), organic carbon (J. Geophys. Res. 105 (2000) 19857), and BC (J. Geophys. Res. 105 (D20) (2000) 24637) was also confirmed on Rax.  相似文献

Most aerosol particles, such as sulphate and sea-salt particles, mainly scatter solar radiation, whilst soot (in the form of elemental carbon or “black” carbon, BC) in addition leads to considerable absorption. This scattering and absorption by the aerosol particles constitute the so-called direct aerosol effect. In this paper, we present results from a study of possible direct effects of tropospheric BC and sulphate aerosols, with an emphasis on BC aerosols, along a line from North Africa through Europe into the Arctic. Radiative budgets in a cloud-free atmosphere are estimated. Based on model-calculated distributions of BC and sulphate (provided by Seland and Iversen, 1998) and assumed size distributions of the background aerosol, new size distributions are obtained by adding natural, biomass burning and fossil fuel contributions to the background aerosol. Added nucleation mode particles are assumed externally mixed, whereas added accumulation mode BC and sulphate is internally mixed with the background according to condensational growth and Brownian coagulation theory. Humidity effects are taken into account by use of the Köhler equation. Mie calculations provide the resulting optical parameters, and the forcing is finally estimated by use of a radiative transfer model. A reference run and a series of eleven test-runs are performed to investigate the sensitivity of various assumptions on the contribution to upward TOA irradiance from BC and non-sea-salt sulphate. The tests suggest a high sensitivity to presence of BC and to particle swelling due to humidity. The sensitivity to assumed distribution of BC on particle size is more moderate. The same is true for the vertical resolution and the number concentration of the background aerosol. The effect of mixing organic carbon (OC) internally with biomass burning BC nucleation mode particles is characterized as moderate. The role of OC is, however, still uncertain. The same holds true for the optical thickness of the background atmosphere, for which we found a high sensitivity in this study. Other assumptions that were investigated had only small effects on the forcing. For the reference run we find a minimum in the aerosol forcing of approximately −5 W m-2 near the most polluted areas in Europe, and a maximum of approximately 2 W m-2 over North Africa. A warming effect is also found for the Arctic region, with forcing values up to 0.4 W m-2.  相似文献

Airborne measurements of the growth of the marine accumulation mode after multiple cycles through stratocumulus cloud are presented. The nss-sulphate cloud residual mode was log-normal in spectral shape and it’s mode radius was observed to progressively increase in size from 0.78 to 0.94 μm over 155 min of air parcel evolution through the cloudy marine boundary layer. The primary reason for this observed growth was thought to result from aqueous phase oxidation of SO2 to aerosol sulphate in activated cloud drops. An aqueous phase aerosol–cloud-chemistry model was used to simulate this case study of aerosol growth and was able to closely reproduce the observed growth. The model simulations illustrate that aqueous phase oxidation of SO2 in cloud droplets was able to provide enough additional sulphate mass to increase the size of activated aerosol. During a typical cloud cycle simulation, ≈4.6 nmoles kg-1air (0.44 μg m-3) of sulphate mass was produced with ≈70% of sulphate production occurring in cloud droplets activated upon sea-salt nuclei and ≈30% occurring upon nss-sulphate nuclei, even though sea-salt nuclei contributed less than 15% to the activated droplet population. The high fraction of nss-sulphate mass internally mixed with sea-salt aerosol suggests that aqueous phase oxidation of SO2 in cloud droplets activated upon sea-salt nuclei is the dominant nss-sulphate formation mechanism and that sea-salt aerosol provides the primary chemical sink for SO2 in the cloudy marine boundary layer.  相似文献

Sulphate size distributions were measured at the coastal station of Mumbai (formerly Bombay) through 1998, during the Indian ocean experiment (INDOEX) first field phase (FFP), to fill current gaps in size-resolved aerosol chemical composition data. The paper examines meteorological, seasonal and source-contribution effects on sulphate aerosol and discusses potential effects of sulphate on regional climate. Sulphate size-distributions were largely trimodal with a condensation mode (mass median aerodynamic diameter or MMAD 0.6 μm), a droplet mode (MMAD 1.9–2.4 μm) and a coarse mode (MMAD 5 μm). Condensation mode sulphate mass-fractions were highest in winter, consistent with the high meteorological potential for gas-to-particle conversion along with low relative humidity (RH). The droplet mode concentrations and MMADs were larger in the pre-monsoon and winter than in monsoon, implying sulphate predominance in larger sized particles within this mode. In these seasons the high RH, and consequently greater aerosol water in the droplet mode, would favour aerosol-phase partitioning and reactions of SO2. Coarse mode sulphate concentrations were lowest in the monsoon, when continental contribution to sulphate was low and washout was efficient. In winter and pre-monsoon, coarse mode sulphate concentrations were somewhat higher, likely from SO2 gas-to-particle conversion. Low daytime sulphate concentrations with a large coarse fraction, along with largely onshore winds, indicated marine aerosol predominance. High nighttime sulphate concentrations and a coincident large fine fraction indicated contributions from anthropogenic/industrial sources or from gas-to-particle conversion. Monthly mean sulphate concentrations increased with increasing SO2 concentrations, RH and easterly wind direction, indicating the importance of gas-to-particle conversion and industrial sources located to the east. Atmospheric chemistry effects on sulphate size distributions in Mumbai, indicated by this data, must be further examined.  相似文献

Aerosols are harmful to human health and have both direct and indirect effects on climate. China is a major contributor to global emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO2), a sulfate (SO42?) precursor, organic carbon (OC), and black carbon (BC) aerosols. Although increasingly examined, the effect of present and potential future levels of these emissions on global premature mortality and climate change has not been well quantified. Through both direct radiative effects and indirect effects on clouds, SO42? and OC exert negative radiative forcing (cooling) while BC exerts positive forcing (warming). We analyze the effect of China's emissions of SO2, SO42?, OC and BC in 2000 and for three emission scenarios in 2030 on global surface aerosol concentrations, premature mortality, and radiative forcing (RF). Using global models of chemical transport (MOZART-2) and radiative transfer (GFDL RTM), and combining simulation results with gridded population data, mortality rates, and concentration–response relationships from the epidemiological literature, we estimate the contribution of Chinese aerosols to global annual premature mortality and to RF in 2000 and 2030. In 2000, we estimate these aerosols cause approximately 470 000 premature deaths in China and an additional 30 000 deaths globally. In 2030, aggressive emission controls lead to a 50% reduction in premature deaths from the 2000 level to 240 000 in China and 10 000 elsewhere, while under a high emissions scenario premature deaths increase 50% from the 2000 level to 720 000 in China and to 40 000 elsewhere. Because the negative RF from SO42? and OC is larger than the positive forcing from BC, Chinese aerosols lead to global net direct RF of ?74 mW m?2 in 2000 and between ?15 and ?97 mW m?2 in 2030 depending on the emissions scenario. Our analysis indicates that increased effort to reduce greenhouse gases is essential to address climate change as China's anticipated reduction of aerosols will result in the loss of net negative radiative forcing.  相似文献

The need for highly time-resolved data on atmospheric aerosol composition has prompted the development of several semi-continuous techniques in recent years. It is necessary to evaluate the performance of these new techniques under different meteorological and chemical conditions. We report on the results of intercomparison between a new commercial PM2.5 semi-continuous sulphate and nitrate instrument (AIM, URG9000B) and filter-based technique. The study was carried out in the summer of 2005 in two polluted suburban/rural areas near Shanghai and Beijing, China, yielding unique results on the performance of this instrument in more polluted environments compared to most of the previously reported studies. The two methods had a good (R2>0.67) overall correlation for sulphate and nitrate, but showed discrepancies in absolute concentrations. At low levels of sulphate (<20 μg m−3) and SO2 (<30 ppbv), the AIM data agreed with the filter result in Beijing (AIM=0.97×filter+0.60, R2=0.94). However, the semi-continuous instrument gave much higher sulphate values at high SO2 concentrations (in Shanghai), which was due to a positive interference from SO2 that broke through the denuder. At high sulphate loading, on the other hand, the AIM gave a much smaller sulphate reading, which was apparently due to an insufficient supply of water vapor to dissolve all the soluble ions under high aerosol loadings. For nitrate, while the two methods showed a good agreement in Shanghai (AIM=0.83×filter+0.00, R2=0.96), evaporative loss from the filters at high temperatures and negative bias in the AIM at high particle loading complicated the correlation in Beijing. Our study points out the need for careful evaluation and modification of the AIM for use in highly polluted environments. Under clean to moderately polluted conditions, the AIM can provide useful, highly time-resolved sulphate and nitrate data.  相似文献

Studies on the effect of NOx on zinc corrosion are scarce and their results are variable and at times seemingly contradictory. This paper reports laboratory tests involving the dry deposition on zinc surfaces of 800 μg m−3 NO2, alone and in combination with 800 μg m−3 SO2, at temperatures of 35 and 25 °C and relative humidities of 90% and 70%. From the gravimetric results obtained and from the characterisation of the corrosion products by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM/EDX), grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), it has been verified that the corrosive action of NO2 alone is negligible compared with SO2. However, an accelerating effect has been observed when NO2 acts in conjunction with SO2 at 25 °C and 90% RH. At 35 °C and 90% RH, the accelerating effect is smaller, and at low relative humidities (70%), the synergistic effect is only slight, which suggests it may be favoured by the presence of moisture. In those cases where an accelerating effect has been observed, a greater proportion of sulphate ions has been found in the corrosion products, and nitrogen compounds have not been detected, indicating that NO2 participates indirectly as a catalyst of the oxidation of SO2 to sulphate.  相似文献

A spatially resolved biomass burning data set, and related emissions of sulphur dioxide and aerosol chemical constituents was constructed for India, for 1996–1997 and extrapolated to the INDOEX period (1998–1999). Sources include biofuels (wood, crop waste and dung-cake) and forest fires (accidental, shifting cultivation and controlled burning). Particulate matter (PM) emission factors were compiled from studies of Indian cooking stoves and from literature for open burning. Black carbon (BC) and organic matter (OM) emissions were estimated from these, accounting for combustion temperatures in cooking stoves. Sulphur dioxide emission factors were based on fuel sulphur content and reported literature measurements. Biofuels accounted 93% of total biomass consumption (577 MT yr−1), with forest fires contributing only 7%. The national average biofuel mix was 56 : 21 : 23% of fuelwood, crop waste and dung-cake, respectively. Compared to fossil fuels, biomass combustion was a minor source of SO2 (7% of total), with higher emissions from dung-cake because of its higher sulphur content. PM2.5 emissions of 2.04 Tg yr−1 with an “inorganic fraction” of 0.86 Tg yr−1 were estimated. Biomass combustion was the major source of carbonaceous aerosols, accounting 0.25 Tg yr−1 of BC (72% of total) and 0.94 Tg yr−1 of OM (76% of total). Among biomass, fuelwood and crop waste were primary contributors to BC emissions, while dung-cake and forest fires were primary contributors to OM emissions. Northern and the east-coast India had high densities of biomass consumption and related emissions. Measurements of emission factors of SO2, size resolved aerosols and their chemical constituents for Indian cooking stoves are needed to refine the present estimates.  相似文献

Twelve hours integrated fine particles (PM2.5) and 24-h average size-segregated particles were collected to investigate the chemical characteristics and to determine the size distribution of ionic species during October–December 1999 in three cities of different urban scale; Chongju, Kwangju, and Seoul, Korea. Concentrations of 5-min PM2.5 black carbon (BC) and hourly criteria air pollutants (PM10, CO, NOx, SO2, and O3) were also measured using the Aethalometer and ambient air monitoring system, respectively.Highest PM2.5 mass concentrations at Chongju, Kwangju, and Seoul sites were 63.0, 77.9, and 143.7 μg m−3, respectively. For the time period when highest PM2.5 mass occurred, BC level out of PM2.5 chemical species was highest at both Chongju and Kwangju, and highest NO3 (23.6 μg m−3) followed by BC (23.1 μg m−3) were observed at Seoul site, indicating that highest PM2.5 pollution is closely associated with the traffic emissions. Strong relationships of Fe with BC and Zn at both Kwangju and Seoul sites support that the Fe and Zn measured there are originated partly from same source as BC, i.e. diesel traffics. However, it is suggested that the Fe measured at Chongju is most likely derived from dispersion of soil dust.The size distributions of SO42−, NO3, and NH4+ ionic species indicated similar unimodal distributions at all sampling sites. However, different unimodal patterns in the accumulation mode size range with a peak in the smaller size (0.28–0.53 μm, condensation mode) in both Kwangju and Seoul, and in the relatively larger size (0.53–1.0 μm, droplet mode) in Chongju, were found. The potassium ion under the study sites dominates in the fine mode, and its size distribution showed unimodal character with a maximum in the size range 0.56–1.0 μm.  相似文献

Aircraft measurements of air pollutants were made to investigate the characteristic features of long-range transport of sulfur compounds over the Yellow Sea for the periods of 26–27 April and 7–10 November in 1998, and 9–11 April and 19 June in 1999, together with aerosol measurements at the Taean background station in Korea. The overall mean concentrations of SO2, O3 and aerosol number in the boundary layer for the observation period ranged 0.1–7.4 ppb 32.1–64.1 ppb and 1.0–143.6 cm−3, respectively. It was found that the air mass over the Yellow Sea had a character of both the polluted continental air and clean background air, and the sulfur transport was mainly confined in the atmospheric boundary layer. The median of SO2 concentration within the boundary layer was about 0.1–2.2 ppb. However, on 8 November, 1998, the mean concentrations of SO2 and aerosol number increased up to 7.4 ppb and 109.5 cm−3, respectively, in the boundary layer, whereas O3 concentration decreased remarkably. This enhanced SO2 concentration occurred in low level westerly air stream from China to Korea. Aerosol analyses at the downstream site of Taean in Korea showed 2–3 times higher sulfate concentration than that of other sampling days, indicating a significant amount of SO2 conversion to non sea-salt sulfate during the long-range transport.  相似文献

A series of 90 experiments were conducted in the UC Riverside/CE-CERT environmental chamber to evaluate the impact of water vapor and dissolved salts on secondary organic aerosol formation for cyclohexene ozonolysis. Water vapor (low – 30 ± 2% RH, medium – 46 ± 2% RH, high – 63 ± 2% RH) was found to directly participate in the atmospheric chemistry altering the composition of the condensing species, thus increasing total organic aerosol formation by ~22% as compared to the system under dry (<0.1% RH) conditions. Hygroscopicity measurements also indicate that the organic aerosol composition is altered in the presence of gaseous water. These results are consistent with water vapor reacting with the crigee intermediate in the gas phase resulting in increased aldehyde formation. The addition of dissolved salts ((NH4)2SO4, NH4HSO4, CaCl2, NaCl) had minimal effect; only the (NH4)2SO4 and NaCl were found to significantly impact the system with ~10% increase in total organic aerosol formation. These results indicate that the organics may be partitioning to an outer organic shell as opposed to into the aqueous salt. Hygroscopicity measurements indicate that the addition of salts does not alter the aerosol composition for the dry or water vapor system.  相似文献

We used aerosol data from 4 sites along the west coast of the U.S. to evaluate the role of transport, seasonal pattern, chemical composition and possible trends in the marine background aerosol for the Pacific Northwest. For the Crater Lake samples, the data have been segregated using 10 day back isentropic trajectories to evaluate the role of transport. Our analysis of the segregated data indicates that the trajectories can successfully separate “locally influenced” from “marine background” aerosol, but are not able to identify a significant difference in the mean concentrations during marine vs Asian transport pathways.The background marine aerosol has an annual mean and median concentrations of 2.0 and 1.5 μg m−3, respectively, for particles less than 2.5 μm diameter. There is a seasonal pattern in all components of the aerosol mass, with a summer maximum and winter minimum. This pattern is most likely due to the strong seasonal pattern in precipitation, which peaks in winter, combined with enhanced sources in summer. The Crater Lake marine aerosol composition is dominated by organics (∼40% by mass), with smaller contributions from sulfates, mineral dust and elemental carbon. Analysis of the background marine aerosol found no apparent trend since 1988. This is in contrast to results reported by Prospero et al. (J. Geophys. Res. 108 (2003) 4019) for nss-SO42− samples from Midway Island in the North Pacific. Comparison of the mean concentrations for each site shows that the Midway samples are significantly more influenced by Asian industrial sources of sulfur, compared to Crater Lake, which implies a substantial loss of nss-SO42− from Asian sources that occurs during transit across the Pacific to Crater Lake due to precipitation scavenging.  相似文献

During four intensive measurement campaigns (two on Mt. Sonnblick, European background aerosol, and two in Vienna, urban aerosol), cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) were measured at supersaturations of 0.5%. Impactor measurements of the mass size distribution in the size range 0.1–10 μm were performed and later analyzed for Cl-, NO-3, SO2-4, Na+, NH+4, K+, Ca2+ and Mg2+ by ion chromatography, for total carbon (TC) using a combustion method, and for black carbon (BC) by an optical method (integrating sphere). Organic carbon (OC) was defined as the difference between TC (minus carbonate carbon) and BC. At all sites, the mass fraction of BC in the submicron aerosol was comparable (4–5%). CCN concentrations on Mt. Sonnblick were found to be 10–30% of those measured in Vienna, although high Mt. Sonnblick concentrations were comparable to low Vienna concentrations (around 800 cm-3). The contribution of organic material was estimated from the mass concentrations of the chemical species sampled on the impactor stage with the lowest cut point (0.1–0.215 μm aerodynamic equivalent diameter). On Mt. Sonnblick, TC material contributed 11% to the total mass in fall 1995, and 67% in summer 1996, while the OC fraction was 6 and 61%. The combined electrolytes and mineral material contributed 18 and 16% in fall and summer. During the Vienna spring campaign, the contributions of OC and electrolytes to the total mass concentration in this size range were 48 and 36%, respectively.  相似文献

Simultaneous continuous measurements of PM2.5, PM10, black carbon mass (BCae), Black smoke (BS) and particle number density (N) were conducted in the close vicinity of a high traffic road around Paris during a three-month period beginning in August 1997. In parallel some aerosol collection was performed on filters in order to assess the black carbon (BC), organic carbon (OC) and water soluble organic fractions (WSOC) of the freshly emitted traffic aerosols. The high hourly concentrations of PM2.5 (39±20 μg m−3), BCae (14±7 μg m−3), and N (220,000±115,000 cm−3), were found to be well correlated with each other. On average PM2.5 represented 66±13% of PM10 and appears to be composed primarily of BC (43±20%). On the contrary no correlation was found between PM2.5 and the coarse (PM10–PM2.5) mass fractions which was attributed to resuspension processes by vehicles. Black carbon mass concentrations obtained from both filter analyses (BC) and Aethalometre data (BCae) show a good agreement suggesting that the Aethalometre calibration based on a black carbon specific attenuation coefficient (σ) of 19 m2 g−1 is well adapted to nearby roadside measurements. Daily BC (used as a surrogate for fine particles) concentrations and wind speed were found to be anti-correlated. Average daily variations of BC could be related to traffic intensity and regime as well as to the boundary layer height. As expected for freshly emitted traffic aerosols, filter analyses indicated a high BC/TC ratio (29±5%) and a low mean WSOC/OC ratio (12.5±5%) for the bulk aerosol. For these two ratios no day/night differences were observed, the sampling station being probably too close to traffic to evidence photochemical modification of the aerosol phase. Finally, a linear relationship was found between BC and BS hourly concentrations (BC=0.10×BS+1.18; r2=0.93) which offers interesting perspectives to retrieve BC concentrations from existing BS archives.  相似文献

This paper discusses the extent of Black Carbon (BC) radiative forcing in the total aerosol atmospheric radiative forcing over Pune, an urban site in India. Collocated measurements of aerosol optical properties, chemical composition and BC were carried out for a period of six months (during October 2004 to May 2005) over the site. Observed aerosol chemical composition in terms of water soluble, insoluble and BC components were used in Optical Properties of Aerosols and Clouds (OPAC) to derive aerosol optical properties of composite aerosols. The BC fraction alone was used in OPAC to derive optical properties of BC aerosols. The aerosol optical properties for composite and BC aerosols were separately used in SBDART model to derive direct aerosol radiative forcing due to composite and BC aerosols. The atmospheric radiative forcing for composite aerosols were found to be +35.5, +32.9 and +47.6 Wm?2 during post-monsoon, winter and pre-monsoon seasons, respectively. The average BC mass fraction found to be 4.83, 6.33 and 4 μg m?3 during the above seasons contributing around 2.2 to 5.8% to the total aerosol load. The atmospheric radiative forcing estimated due to BC aerosols was +18.8, +23.4 and +17.2 Wm?2, respectively during the above seasons. The study suggests that even though BC contributes only 2.2–6% to the total aerosol load; it is contributing an average of around 55% to the total lower atmospheric aerosol forcing due to strong radiative absorption, and thus enhancing greenhouse warming.  相似文献

The influence of chemical boundary conditions (BC) on the response of the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model over the Iberian Peninsula was investigated in this study. Three strategies to supply boundary conditions in the context of the Integrated Assessment Modelling System for the Iberian Peninsula (SIMCA) were tested. Alternative methods consist in providing BC from (1) fixed, time-independent, concentration profiles, (2) concentrations predicted in a CMAQ mother domain (48 km, 1 h resolution) and (3) concentration values from the GEOS-Chem chemical-transport global model (2 × 2.5°, 3 h resolution). High resolution (3 km) simulated concentrations of the main pollutants (NO2, NO, SO2, O3, PM10 and PM2.5) were compared through a comprehensive statistical analysis including observational data from 165 monitoring stations all over the Iberian Peninsula. It was found that model sensitivity to BC for nitrogen and sulphur oxides was limited, being restricted to the vicinity of model boundaries. However, significant domain-wide differences were found when modelling ozone and PM depending on the BC provided to run the tests. Although model performance was affected by spatial and seasonal factors, the results indicate that model-derived, dynamic BC improved CMAQ predictions when compared to those based on static concentrations prescribed in the boundaries. Aggregated statistics suggest that the GEOS-Chem produced the best results for O3 and PM2.5 while NO2 and PM10 were slightly better predicted under the CMAQ nesting approach. Besides the statistical evaluation some other relevant issues in the context of Integrated Assessment Modelling (IAM) are discussed to gain a better insight into the suitability of the methods analyzed and limitations of downscaling methods. Despite being useful to get a better understanding of the role of BC in SIMCA, this study contributed to highlight model deficiencies and therefore to point out future research needs to improve IAM activities in the Iberian Peninsula.  相似文献

Characteristic parameters of black carbon aerosol (BC) emitted from jet engine were measured during ground tests and in-flight behind the same aircraft. Size distribution features were a primary BC mode at a modal diameter D≈0.045 μm, and a BC agglomeration mode at D<0.2 μm. The total BC number concentration at the engine exit was 2.9×107 cm-3 with good agreement between model results and in-flight measured number concentrations of non-volatile particles with D⩾0.014 μm. A comparison between total number concentration of BC particles and the non-volatile fraction of the total aerosol at the exit plane suggests that the non-volatile fraction of jet engine exhaust aerosol consists almost completely of BC. In-flight BC mass emission indices ranged from 0.11 to 0.15 g BC (kg fuel)-1. The measured in-flight particle emission value was 1.75±0.15×1015 kg-1 with corresponding ground test values of 1.0–8.7×1014 kg-1. Both size distribution properties and mass emission indices can be scaled from ground test to in-flight conditions. Implications for atmospheric BC loading, BC and cirrus interaction and the potential of BC for perturbation of atmospheric chemistry are briefly outlined.  相似文献

Altitude profiles of the mass concentrations of aerosol black carbon (BC) and composite aerosols were obtained from the collocated measurements of these quantities onboard an aircraft, over the urban area of Kanpur, in the Ganga basin of northern India during summer, for the first time in India. The enhancement in the mean BC concentration was observed at ∼1200 m in the summer, but the vertical gradient of BC concentration is less than the standard deviation at that altitude. The difference in the BC altitude profile and columnar concentration in the winter and summer is attributed to the enhanced turbulent mixing within the boundary layer in summer. This effect is more conspicuous with BC than the composite aerosols, resulting in an increase in the BC mass fraction (FBC) at higher levels in summer. This high BC fraction results in an increase in the lower atmospheric heating rate in both the forenoon, FN and afternoon, AN, but with contrasting altitude profile. The FN profile shows fluctuating trend with highest value (2.1 K day−1) at 300 m and a secondary peak at 1200 m altitudes, whereas the AN profile shows increasing trend with highest value (1.82 K day−1) at 1200 m altitude.  相似文献

A detailed aerosol source apportionment study was performed with two sampling campaigns, during wintertime and summertime in the heavily polluted metropolitan area of São Paulo, Brazil. In addition to 12 h fine and coarse mode filter sampling, several real time aerosol and trace gas monitors were used. PM10 was sampled using stacked filter units that collects fine (d<2.5 μm) and coarse (2.5<d<10 μm) particulate matter, providing mass, black carbon (BC) and elemental concentration for each aerosol mode. The concentration of about 20 elements was determined using the particle induce X-ray emission technique. Real time aerosol monitors provided PM10 aerosol mass (TEOM), organic and elemental carbon (Carbon Monitor 5400, R&P) and BC concentration (Aethalometer). A complex system of sources and meteorological conditions modulates the heavy air pollution of the urban area of São Paulo. The boundary layer height and the primary emissions by motor vehicles controls the strong pattern of diurnal cycles obtained for PM10, BC, CO, NOx, and SO2. Absolute principal factor analysis results showed a very similar source pattern between winter and summer field campaigns, despite the different locations of the sampling sites of both campaigns, pointing that there are no significant change in the main air pollution sources. The source identified as motor vehicle represented 28% and 24% of the PM2.5 for winter and summer, respectively. Resuspended soil dust accounted for 25% and 30%. The oil combustion source represented 18% and 21%. Sulfates accounts for 23% and 17% and finally industrial emissions contributed with 5% and 6% of PM2.5, for winter and summer, respectively. The resuspended soil dust accounted for a large fraction (75–78%) of the coarse mode aerosol mass. Certainly automobile traffic and soil dust are the main air pollution sources in São Paulo. The sampling and analytical procedures applied in this study showed that it is possible to perform a quantitative aerosol source apportionment in a complex urban area such as São Paulo.  相似文献

Measurements on size distribution of atmospheric aerosol were made at Dayalbagh, Agra during July to September 1998. A 4-stage cascade particle sampler (CPS - 105) which fractionates particles in sizes ranging between 0.7 and >10.9 μm, was used. Samples were collected on Whatman 41 filters. The filters were analyzed for the major water-soluble ions. The anions (F, Cl, NO3 and SO4) were analyzed by Dionex DX-500 ion chromatograph while atomic absorption and colorimetric techniques were used for the analysis of cations (Na, K, Ca and Mg) and NH4, respectively. The average mass of aerosol was found to be 131.6 μg m−3 and aerosol composition was found to be influenced by terrigeneous sources. The mass size distribution of total aerosol and the ions NH4, Cl, NO3, K, Ca, Mg, SO4 and Na was bimodal while that of F was unimodal. SO4, F, K and NH4 dominated in the fine mode while Ca, Mg, Cl and NO3 were in abundance in coarse fraction. Na was found in both coarse as well as fine mode. Coarse mode SO4 and NO3 have been ascribed to contribution from re-suspension of soil and formation by heterogeneous oxidation on soil derived particles. Preponderance of K in fine mode is attributed to emissions from vegetation and from burning of plant materials. Ca, Mg, Cl and NO3 are largely soil derived and hence dominate in coarse fraction. Equivalent ratios of NH4/(SO4+NO3) were calculated for both fine and coarse aerosols. The coarse mode ratio varied between 0.7 and 1.4 while in fine mode it ranged between 1.4 and 1.9. It shows that aerosol is basic, the basicity of coarse mode is due to higher concentration of soil-derived alkaline components while the basicity in fine mode is due to neutralization of acidity by NH3.  相似文献
