A shipboard experimental study was conducted on the respiratory rate of pelagic copepods from two Mediterranean stations (Ionian Sea and Occidental Basin). In each sampling area, copepods were collected from different depths (0 to 2500 m) by horizontal net hauls. Selected copepod species included bathypelagic, lower mesopelagic, upper mesopelagic and epipelagic species. Respiration rates were determined at 4 different temperatures (10°, 14°, 18°, 22°C). The metabolism-temperature curves revealed varying degrees of thermal sensibility of copepod respiration related to their respective habitats. During experiments employing a large range of temperatures, bathypelagic species proved most sensitive. By contrast, vertically migrating species appeared to be more tolerant to temperature variation. The relationship between respiratory rate and copepod dry weight was investigated for the 4 temperatures used. A strong correlation emerged between log of respiration and log of weight. The equation of regression lines varied with experimental temperature and with geographic origin of the copepods studied. Comparison of the relation respiration-weight of specimens from the two Mediterranean stations and from a previously studied Atlantic station (Canarian and south Moroccan region), indicated that observed differences are related to the average temperature of the mesopelagic waters in each sampling area. The pressure effect on metabolic rate is discussed. It is suggested that hydrostatic pressure does not affect the characteristics of temperature sensibility of copopods' respiration under the temperature conditions prevailing in their natural habitat.  相似文献

Three species of barnacles with boreo-aretic distribution were shown to require maintenance for several weeks below a critical temperature before the breeding condition could be attained. The temperatures critical for Balanus balanoides (L.) Balanus balanus (L.) and Balanus crenatus (Bruguière) were found to be between 10° and 12°C, 10° and 14°C, and at about 17°C, respectively. Although the strong influence of continuous light and the weak influence of continued feeding in delaying the onset of breeding in B. balanoides were confirmed, there remained some outstanding anomalies between the breeding behaviour of this species under laboratory conditions and between the tide marks. It was found impossible to initiate breeding by the application of conditioning procedures significantly in advance of the time of the normal Autumn breeding season in B. balanoides. Breeding appears to be inhibited, independently of external conditions, for a set period after the preceding brood cycle. Evidence points to a similar, largely endogenous, control of breeding in B. balanus which also breeds once annually, but not in B. crenatus which breeds continuously so long as food and temperature levels permit.  相似文献

Sergestes lucens Hansen, a mesopelagic shrimp fished commercially in Suruga Bay, Japan, was successfully reared from egg to post-larval stage V under laboratory conditions. Chaetoceros ceratosporum and Artemia nauplii were found to be satisfactory food in the laboratory during rearing. Growth, mortality, food preference, and feeding and swimming activities during the various developmental stages were investigated. Temperature changes greatly affected the speed of development and the mortality of the larvae. The optimum temperature range for larval development was 18° to 25°C. The growth rate (length) of larval stages was as rapid as 0.16mm/ day at 20 °C and 0.21 mm/day at 23 °C. The larvae first started feeding on phytoplankton at elaphocaris stage I, and then gradually became predators in the post-larval stages. It is suggested that the critical period for the species occurs in the elaphocaris stages. Environmental data, vertical distribution of the species, and data obtained from laboratory experiments suggest that the fluctuation in the abundance of S. lucens is greatly influenced by the water temperature at around 50 m from June to August. Feeding mechanisms observed in the post-larval stages are described.  相似文献

The bathymetric distribution of chaetognath fauna observed at planktonic stations in the South Eastern Pacific Ocean during three different expeditions, is presented quantitatively. The material from the cruises IFOP-01 (October–December, 1964) and IFOP-04 (November–December, 1965) was collected by vertical closing net, at regular intervals, from 2000 and 1000 m depth, respectively; the R.V. A. Bruun Cruise 13 data include vertical samples at usual depth intervals from 3000 m (see Table 12), Isaac-Kidd Midwater Trawl (IKMT) and surface collections. They allowed us to identify, for the first time, the meso and bathypelagic species of this region and to extend the longitudinal distribution of the epipelagic species, which had been previously limited to the coastal areas. Among the epiplanktonic species, it was shown that two, Sagitta serratodentata and S. bipunctata, do not penetrate into the Peru Coastal Current region, where the endemic S. bierri is to be found extending westwards to the west boundary of the Peru Coastal Current, and that both mesopelagic species, previously reported for the epipelagic level of this area, S. decipiens and Eukrohnia hamata, inhabit the upper mesopelagic level in the oceanic region, but also rise to the epipelagic level near the coast, where upwellings do occur. The lower mesopelagic levels (500 to 1000 m) are occupied by E. fowleri and S. macrocephala, this latter species being reported for the first time in the South Eastern Pacific Ocean. The other mesopelagic species, S. zetesios and S. bathypelagica, also found for the first time in this region, were not found in large enough numbers to obtain a correct view of their stratification. Eukrohnia bathyantarctica, described for the Southern Ocean and previously reported only in the bathypelagic levels of the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea, was found at only bathypelagic levels. The faunistic data from the R.V. A. Bruun Cruise 13, were compared with the corresponding hydrographical profiles.  相似文献

The vertical distribution, abundance and community structure of oncaeid copepods were investigated in the Oyashio region, western subarctic Pacific. Samples were collected with a 0.10 mm mesh closing type net from five discrete layers down to a maximum depth of 2,000 m in September and December 1996 and in April and October 1997. The copepods were widely distributed from epipelagic to bathypelagic zones, and showed prominent peaks of abundance above the thermocline and/or between 250 and 1,000 m depth. Standing stocks of total oncaeid copepods ranged from 1.5 to 2.5×105 inds m–2 at 0–2,000 m in the water column, which are the same order of magnitudes as those reported in tropical, subtropical and polar regions by previous workers. A total of 38 species and two forms belonging to the genera Oncaea, Triconia, Spinoncaea, Conaea and Epicalymma, and two provisionally classified species of the family Oncaeidae were identified in this study. Of these, 14 species have already been recorded from the eastern subarctic Pacific. Several warm-water species were also found in December 1996 and/or October 1997, when the effect of warm-core rings originating from the Kuroshio Current was evident in the epipelagic zone. Dominant species throughout the whole water column were T. borealis, T. canadensis, O. grossa, O. parila, O. rimula, O. lacinia, Epicalymma spp. and Oncaea sp. A, and these eight species together always made up about half of the total oncaeid numbers. Community analysis revealed that species composition in epipelagic and upper mesopelagic zones varied temporally due to the changes of hydrographic conditions, whereas those in lower mesopelagic and bathypelagic zones were relatively stable, reflecting the constancy of deep environments.Communicated by O. The activity of crude muscle lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) of several species of bathypelagic and shallow-water fishes has been measured at pressures between 1 and 578 atm and at temperatures of 15° and 25°C. No relationship has been found between the effect of pressure on enzyme activity and the hydrostatic pressure of the organism's environment. Applied hydrostatic pressure reduced activity at both temperatures. The decrease at 25°C was double the decrease at 15°C in LDH from shallow-water fishes. However, enzymes from 2 bathypelagic fishes showed approximately the same reduction at both temperatures. Thus, the interaction of temperature and pressure was less in deep-sea than in shallow-water fish LDH. Decreasing temperature and increasing pressure would both reduce the activity of LDH. That is, deep-sea conditions are noncompensatory in this instance. Anaerobic heat-production rates of two co-occurring species of estuarine bivalves (a clam and a mussel) were measured with double-twin heat-flow calorimeters, one at 20°C, the other at 30°C. There is no significant difference between the two species in metabolic rates. There is evidence of initial aerobic metabolism in some individuals, as shown by high initial rates exponentially decreasing with time, while others had fluctuating but stable average metabolic activity from the beginning. During aerobic as well as anaerobic metabolism, the bivalves showed rhythmic periods of activity and quiescence. The two species differed in their rhythmic pattern of active and resting metabolism. In the case ofPolymesoda caroliniana, periods of resting metabolism tend to be longer and periods of active metabolism shorter at 30°C than at 20°C. There is a similarity between thermograms ofModiolus demissus at 20° and 30°C. Following acute temperature changes from 5° to 20° and 30°C, the bivalves showed stable metabolic rates in a matter of hours. The stabilized average rates [pooled averages for both species of 1.34×10-4 (standard error of the mean=0.17×10-4) W g-1 dry weight of tissue at 20°C and 2.10×10-4 (SE=0.20×10-4) W g-1 at 30°C] signify a temperature coefficient (Q10) of 1.56 between 20° and 30°C, or partial temperature acclimation. Subtracting heat production as a result of physical activity, i.e., considering only resting metabolism, the corresponding means and standard errors of the means are 1.24×10-4 and 0.14×10-4 W g-1 at 20°C and 1.91×10-4 and 0.077×10-4 W g-1 at 30°C. Anaerobic heat production rate at 20°C is proportional to body size (r=0.84, 9 degrees of freedom, DF). ForM. demissus, measured anaerobic heat production is on the order of 7.5% of the level of aerobic respiration reported in the literature.  相似文献

The diurnal vertical migrations of 4 marine dinoflagellates (Cachonina niei, Ceratium furca, Gymnodinium splendens, and Prorocentrum micans) were studied in a thermally-stratified Plexiglas column (1.70 m deep, 0.61 m diameter). All species migrated through temperature gradients exceeding 7 C°. Some species exhibited altered migration patterns at different salinities either between experiments or compared to observations by other investigators. P. micans exhibited complex changes in swimming speed that depended both on temperature and on the light cycle. These changes provide insight into the possible time course of a field organism's diurnal exposure to physical variability in the water column. P. micans exhibited compositional changes in response to the light cycle, but not to the cross-thermocline temperature differential. A multi-parameter response matrix is required to model coupling between organisms and biologically-active physical mechanisms realistically.  相似文献

The combined effects of temperature, salinity and nutrition on survival and growth of larvae of the Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis and the Japanese oyster Crassostrea gigas were studied over a period of 7 d in the laboratory. Ripe adults, collected in spring and summer 1987 from natural populations in the Bay of Arcachon, France, were induced to spawn. Larvae of both species were cultured at four temperatures (15°, 20°, 25° and 30°C), four salinities (20, 25, 30 and 35S) per temperature, and two levels of nutrition (fed and unfed) per temperature/salinity combination. The fed larvae received a mixed algal diet of 50 cells each of Isochrysis galbana and Chaetoceros calcitrans forma pumilum per microlitre. In both bivalve species, larvae survived over a wide range of temperature and salinity, with the exception of mussel larvae, which died at 30°C. Statistical analysis indicated that nutrition had the greatest effect on larval development, explaining 64 to 75% of the variance in growth of M. galloprovincialis and 54 to 70% in growth of Crassostrea gigas. Unfed mussel larvae displayed little growth. Compared with temperature, the effect of salinity was very slight. M. galloprovincialis larvae exhibited best growth at 20°C and 35S and C. gigas at 30°C and 30S.  相似文献

The temperature range for the best competitive position by growth of Thalassiosira nordenskioeldii Cleve has been determined by comparing generation times. It ranges from-1.5° to 6°C. At these temperatures, especially at lower light intensities, it was one of the fastest growing species, whereas above 6°C many other species grew faster. High light intensities at increasing temperatures became damaging. A flowering of the cold oligo-eurytherm diatom T. nordenskioeldii occurs not only in the upper layers, but can also occur at greater depth simultaneously, because decreasing daylengths at 6°C had the least influence on its growth. Continuous light at 6°C had a positive influence on its growth. The start of the T. nordenskioeldii spring flowering under the Arctic Sea Ice is discussed in connection with the occurrence of enclosed marine diatoms in Polar Sea Ice. The influence of the winter temperature on the spring flowering of the North Sea, the southern border for flowerings of T. nordenskioeldii, is discussed. For Chaetoceros diadema (Ehrenberg) Gran the best competitive position by growth is reached at-1.5° to about 6°C. It has the best opportunity of reaching high cell numbers at the lowest temperatures of the range. The occurrence of the cold oligo-eurytherm diatom Ch. diadema in plankton samples at temperatures above 10°C need not be incorret, for the species did grow in cultures at 12° and 16°C. The wrong interpretation of the experimentally determined optimum temperature of e.g. T. nordenskioeldii caused a discrepancy between experimental results and field data that does not exist. The question is discussed whether ecologically it is relevant to talk about a temperature optimum. On account of the results of T. nordenskioeldii the question of the adaptation of diatom cultures for the start of the real experiments is discussed.  相似文献

Stable isotope (SI) ratios of carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) were measured in omnivorous and carnivorous deep-sea copepods of the families Euchaetidae and Aetideidae across the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean to establish their trophic positions. Due to high and variable C/N ratios related to differences in lipid content, δ13C was corrected using a lipid-normalisation model. δ15N signals ranged from 3.0–6.9‰ in mesopelagic species to 7.0–9.5‰ in bathypelagic congeners. Among the carnivorous Paraeuchaeta species, the epi- to mesopelagic species Paraeuchaeta antarctica had lower δ15N values than the mesopelagic P. rasa and bathypelagic P. barbata. The same trend was observed among omnivorous Aetideidae, but was not significant. In the most abundant species P. antarctica, individuals from the western Atlantic had higher δ13C and δ15N values than specimens at the eastern stations. These longitudinal changes in δ13C and δ15N values were attributed to regional differences in hydrography and sea surface temperature (SST), in particular related to a northward extension of the Antarctic Polar Front (APF) at the easternmost stations. The results indicate that even in a mesopelagic carnivorous species, the changes in surface stable isotope signatures are pronounced.  相似文献

The effects of temperature on growth rate of rapidly-growing cultured macrosporophytes of 9 isolates of Atlantic Laminaria comprising 4 species have been investigated. No significant population variation was observed within species despite wide variations in temperature between the original collecting sites. L. saccharina showed a broad temperature optimum in the 10°–15°C range, whereas L. longicruris had a sharp optimum at 10°C. L. digitata and L. hyperborea grew more slowly, with only slightly sub-optimal growth over a wide temperature range, but with peaks at 10°C (L. digitata) and 15°C (L. hyperborea). The maximum survival temperatures of individual male and female vegetatively-growing gametophytes were ascertained for these species plus the Arctic L. solidungula, and were as follows: L. saccharina and L. longicruris, 23°C; L. digitata (male), 23°C; L. digitata (female), 22°C; L. hyperborea, 21°C; L. solidungula, 18°C. The lack of within-species differences demonstrates that the success of the genus in areas with different temperature regimes is brought about by phenotypic plasticity of individuals rather than the selection of temperature races or ecotypes.  相似文献

Photosynthesis and respiration of 4 species of the marine red algal genus Polysiphonia were evaluated under a variety of light, temperature and salinity conditions. The manometric results were compared with the local distribution and abundance of each species. The species can be separated into two distinct categories based on their overall distribution and temperature optima: (1) cold water plants [P. lanosa (L.) Tandy and P. elongata (Hudson) Sprengel], with peak photosynthesis at 21° to 24°C, but with active photosynthesis as low as 5°C; (2) plants with warm-water affinities [P. nigrescens (Hudson) Greville and P. subtilissima Montagne], having photosynthetic optima at 27° to 30°C, and exhibiting little or no photosynthesis below 10°C. The plants from the first group exhibit thermal injury at temperatures of 25°C and show a narrow tolerance to low salinities during periods of high temperatures. The plants from the second group show thermal injury at 30°C and have a wider tolerance to low salinities. The horizontal distribution of the 4 Polysiphonia species within the Great Bay Estuary System of New Hampshire, USA, is primarily governed by their tolerances to high temperatures and low salinities. The temperature optimum for each of the species corresponds to its particular estuarine distribution. Thus, P. subtilissima, having the highest temperature optimum, penetrated furthest into the Estuary, while P. lanosa, having the lowest temperature optimum, was restricted to the more coastal stations. The reproductive parameters of three species of barnacles common in warm-water regions,Balanus amphitrite Darwin,B. eburneus Gould andB. trigonus Darwin, cultured singly or in pairs for 2 1/2 yr, were compared. All specimens, collected from Tokyo Bay and studied between 1985 and 1987, were fed on newly hatchedArtemia sp. larvae (Tetra strain) and phytoplankton culture and were maintained under constant temperature (20°C) and controlled photoperiods (10 h light:14 h dark). The breeding frequencies of these three species were equally high, from 2 to 4 broods mo–1 in the first year; they were relatively high between October and February, averaging 3 broods mo–1.B. amphitrite, B. eburneus andB. trigonus produced 24, 21 and 11 broods yr–1, respectively. Brood size was quite variable among the three species examined, yielding 4000 embryos brood–1 inB. amphitrite andB. eburneus and 6000 inB. trigonus. Brood interval averaged 4 to 9 d. The moult occurred over short intervals of 4 to 10 d moult–1. Both breeding and moulting frequencies were influenced by low temperature and starvation. Self-fertilization was observed in all species and was more frequent inB. amphitrite than inB. eburneus andB. trigonus. Nutritional condition and temperature seemed to be the main external factors regulating both breeding and moulting processes in barnacles.  相似文献

The upper temperature tolerance range for Trichomya hirsuta L. is described for acclimation temperatures of 10° to 32°C at 30% S. Changes in thermal resistance with time are described along with the incipient lethal temperatures. The eurythermicity for the species is 240.7 C°-squared. The ultimate upper incipient lethal temperature is 35.1°C. Definition of the incipient sublethal temperature is given, and is equal to 32°C. Diet effects are shown not to be significant in short-term lethal experiments, but indicate that unfed mussels reduce their resistance after prolonged exposure to high temperatures. Size was also shown to have no effect on resistance and tolerance. A comparison of the tolerance triangle of T. hirsuta with those of the temperate species Mytilus edulis and Mya arenaria revealed that the 24-h LT50 minus 2.2 C° approximates the incipient lethal temperature. The eurythermicities of the temperate species are Mytilus edulis, 363 C°-squared; and Mya arenaria, 415 C°-squared.  相似文献

Grass puffer Fugu niphobles, captured in November 1986 at Shimoda, Japan, and then reared at different temperatures ranging from 10 to 29°C, was examined for microflora changes in the skin, gill and intestines. At 10°C, the skin and gill were colonized mainly by Pseudomonas, Flavobacterium and Moraxella, while at 29°C Vibrio and Flavobacterium appeared abundantly. The intestinal microflora, consisting of Vibrio, Pseudomonas and Flavobacterium, revealed little temperature dependence, although the intrageneric composition of Vibrio changed conspicuously depending on the change of water temperature. Vibrio group 1, tentatively identified as V. alginolyticus, was detected in all tissues examined at 20 and 29°C. This, along with the fact that V. alginolyticus produces tetrodotoxin, suggests that the tetrodotoxin contained in puffer is, at least partly, accounted for by this bacterial species inhabiting intestines.  相似文献

The infratidal zonation of animals in a 35 m deep fjord-like South African estuary is described. The barnacle Balanus amphitrite Darwin and the bivalve Musculus virgiliae Barnard form the uppermost zone and extend to a depth of 9 m. The oyster Crassostrea margaritacea (Lam.) forms a zone between 1 and 3 m depth while the sponge Grantessa ramosa (Haeckel) occurs between 3 and 7 m. The tubiculous polychaete Mercierella enigmatica Fauvel is the only species found below 10 m, and attains a depth of 33 m. In the wet season (summer) the surface salinity dropped to 2 and temperatures rose to 24°C. In the dry season (winter) surface salinity rose to 24 and temperatures dropped to 16°C. Salinity and temperature of deep water (6 to 33 m) were more stable and varied only between 32.5 and 35 and between 19.6° and 20.5°C, respectively. In June, water below 12 m was 50 to 60% saturated with oxygen but this declined to less than 5% saturation in January.  相似文献

Previous feeding studies on herbivorous marine snails rarely have focused on temperature effects on food intake. If temperature affects food intake, ectothermic snails may experience difficulty obtaining sufficient nutritional resources, limiting their ability to sustain populations at suboptimal temperatures. We hypothesized that the feeding responses of Tegula species would correspond with temperatures characteristic of their geographic distributions. We determined activity, consumption rates, and gut passage times at 11°C, 15°C, 19°C, and 23°C for three Tegula species with distinct thermal distributions: T. brunnea (cold water), T. aureotincta (warm water), and individuals from warm- and cold-water populations of T. funebralis, a broadly distributed species. Activity and consumption rates of T. aureotincta increased with increasing temperature, but were highest for T. brunnea at 19°C, a temperature rarely achieved in habitats occupied by this species, and lowest at 11°C. Warm-water T. funebralis showed significantly lower activity and consumption rates at 11°C, whereas cold-water T. funebralis consumed food fastest at 15°C and were most active at 23°C. Temperature affected gut passage time only in T. aureotincta. These data suggest that temperature might influence the northern limit of T. aureotincta by affecting activity and food consumption rates. T. brunneas activity and ability to consume food were not hindered by warmer temperatures despite the present day restriction of this species to colder waters. Also, widely separated (>300 km) T. funebralis populations may be adapted to regional conditions based on the different temperature responses of northern and southern snails.Communicated by P.W. Oxygen consumption of 3 species of Patella was measured in air and water at various temperatures. Measurements at constant temperature over a full tidal cycle showed no tidal or light-dark rhythms. Measurements under conditions simulating natural tidal, temperature and day-night cycles allowed calculation of daily respiratory energy budgets. P. cochlear occurs low on the shore, but experiences a food shortage due to intense intraspecific competition. Its rate of respiration is moderate, but metabolic expenditure is kept low because exposure to air is brief and body temperatures seldom rise above 23°C. P. cochlear has a respiratory rate-temperature (R-T) curve which peaks at 20°C and forms a plateau between 20° and 32.5°C. The midshore P. oculus has abundant food and adopts an exploitative strategy. Growth rate is very high, and this high turnover of energy is linked with a high metabolic rate, high Q10 (temperature coefficient) values, high body temperatures during the day-time low tide, and a respiratory R-T curve peaking at 32.5°C. Small P. oculus occur mainly in intertidal pools and respire faster in water, while larger individuals occur on bare rocks and respire faster in air over the upper temperature range. In contrast, the upper-shore P. granularis has little food, and conservation of energy is essential, particularly as its growth rate is moderate and its reprocurve output high. Respiratory losses are reduced by suppression of the R-T curve and low Q10 values, resulting in relative independence of temperature. Small P. granularis occur low on the shore and respire slower in water. Larger individuals occur at high levels due to migration, and respire slower in air. This further reduces respiratory energy losses. The patterns of respiration in these 3 species are thus related to food availability, resulting in exploitative or conservationist strategies.  相似文献

The ostracod fauna of Baltic brackish-water rockpools is made up of two groups: permanent members of the pools, and occasional guests from the littoral zone. The former group consists of Heterocypris salinus, H. incongruens and Cypridopsis aculeata. These species are characterized by rapid development (which starts when the water temperature approaches 15°C), a short life span, and 2 or 3 separate generations during the summer and autumn. The number of generations is determined by water temperature. Hibernation always takes place as eggs. Hatching and development during the late spring or early summer has been found to be mostly simultaneous. The spawning of the 3 species always starts epidemically. Reproduction is entirely parthenogenetic in the investigated area. Under natural conditions, C. aculeata may be found with either H. salinus or H. incongruens, but these two latter species have never been recorded together. H. incongruens is less tolerant to high salinities than the other 2 species and, even after successive adaptation, it does not resist salinities higher than 16. H. salinus has been found in 35.2 S in the field, and has been kept in 30 S in the laboratory after successive adaptation. The optimum salinity-temperature range for this species is 5 to 10 S and 15°C, when both survival and development are considered. Corresponding figures for C. aculeata are 0.5 to 20 S and 15°C, although this species, like H. salinus, survives longest at 5°C. The very rapid development, parthenogenetic reproduction and short life span of these species must be considered as favourable adaptations to the variable and unstable environment of the rockpool ecosystems.  相似文献
