Pine pollen concentrations in air at a semi-remote site in northern Wisconsin attained levels of 18 and 25 μ m−3 in late May and early June of 1979 and 1981, respectively. The upper and lower limits for the deposition velocity of pine pollen at this site are approximately 30 and 1.3 cm s−1, respectively. Consequently, the average annual pine pollen flux at this location for 1979 and 1981 was between 8.0 and 0.35 g m−2. Deposition of total phosphorus and organic C by pollen dispersal are about 5–100% and 11–240%, respectively, of the measured bulk atmospheric loading rate in the region. Pine pollen fluxes of water-extractable K are about 10–230% of the average annual wet deposition, while the fluxes of waterextractable NO3 and SO4−2 by pollen appear to be negligible in comparison to the total atmospheric deposition (wet plus dry deposition) by other particles. The annual pine pollen flux to Crystal Lake, an oligotrophic seepage lake in the region, was estimated to be 6.5 g m−2 during 1981. The deposition of total P by pollen to this lake was 5.8 kg a−1, which is 45 % of the external input of total phosphorus. About 60% of the total P in samples of Pinus strobus and P. resinosa was dissolved reactive P, which is readily available for plant uptake. Because P is the limiting nutrient for many lacustrine systems and pine pollen dispersal coincides with the period of phytoplankton blooms in temperate-region lakes, this episodic input of P may represent an important source for seepage lakes whose external inputs are dominated by atmospheric deposition.  相似文献

Simultaneous continuous measurements of PM2.5, PM10, black carbon mass (BCae), Black smoke (BS) and particle number density (N) were conducted in the close vicinity of a high traffic road around Paris during a three-month period beginning in August 1997. In parallel some aerosol collection was performed on filters in order to assess the black carbon (BC), organic carbon (OC) and water soluble organic fractions (WSOC) of the freshly emitted traffic aerosols. The high hourly concentrations of PM2.5 (39±20 μg m−3), BCae (14±7 μg m−3), and N (220,000±115,000 cm−3), were found to be well correlated with each other. On average PM2.5 represented 66±13% of PM10 and appears to be composed primarily of BC (43±20%). On the contrary no correlation was found between PM2.5 and the coarse (PM10–PM2.5) mass fractions which was attributed to resuspension processes by vehicles. Black carbon mass concentrations obtained from both filter analyses (BC) and Aethalometre data (BCae) show a good agreement suggesting that the Aethalometre calibration based on a black carbon specific attenuation coefficient (σ) of 19 m2 g−1 is well adapted to nearby roadside measurements. Daily BC (used as a surrogate for fine particles) concentrations and wind speed were found to be anti-correlated. Average daily variations of BC could be related to traffic intensity and regime as well as to the boundary layer height. As expected for freshly emitted traffic aerosols, filter analyses indicated a high BC/TC ratio (29±5%) and a low mean WSOC/OC ratio (12.5±5%) for the bulk aerosol. For these two ratios no day/night differences were observed, the sampling station being probably too close to traffic to evidence photochemical modification of the aerosol phase. Finally, a linear relationship was found between BC and BS hourly concentrations (BC=0.10×BS+1.18; r2=0.93) which offers interesting perspectives to retrieve BC concentrations from existing BS archives.  相似文献

A total of 16 boundary layer (BL) DMS flux values were derived from flights over the Southern Ocean. DMS flux values were derived from airborne observations recorded during the Aerosol Characterization Experiment (ACE 1). The latitude range covered was 55°S–40°S. The method of evaluation was based on the mass-balance photochemical-modeling (MBPCM) approach. The estimated flux for the above latitude range was 0.4–7.0 μmol m−2 d−1. The average value from all data analyzed was 2.6±1.8 μmol m−2 d−1. A comparison of the MBPCM methodology with several other DMS flux methods (e.g., ship and airborne based) revealed reasonably good agreement in some cases and significant disagreement in other cases. Considering the limited number of cases compared and the fact that conditions for the comparisons were far from ideal, it is not possible to conclude that major agreement or differences have been established between these methods. A major result from this study was the finding that DMS oxidation is a major source of BL SO2 over the Southern Ocean. Model simulations suggest that, on average, the conversion efficiency is 0.7 or higher, given a lifetime for SO2 of ∼1 d. A comparison of two sulfur case studies, one based on DMS–SO2 data generated on the NCAR C-130 aircraft, the other based on data recorded on the NOAA ship Discoverer, revealed qualitative agreement in finding that DMS was a major source of Southern Ocean SO2. On the other hand, significant disagreement was found regarding the DMS/SO2 conversion efficiency (e.g., 0.3–0.5 versus 0.7–0.9). Although yet unknown factors, such as vertical mixing, may be involved in reducing the level of disagreement, it does appear at this time that some significant portion of this difference may be related to systematic differences in the two different techniques employed to measure SO2. It would seem prudent, therefore, that further instrument intercomparison SO2 studies be considered. It also would be desirable to stage new intercomparison activity between the MBPCM flux approach and the air-to-sea gradient as well as other flux methods, but under far more favorable conditions.  相似文献

Personal exposures, residential indoor, outdoor and workplace levels of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) were measured for 262 urban adult (25–55 years) participants in three EXPOLIS centres (Basel; Switzerland, Helsinki; Finland, and Prague; Czech Republic) using passive samplers for 48-h sampling periods during 1996–1997. The average residential outdoor and indoor NO2 levels were lowest in Helsinki (24±12 and 18±11 μg m−3, respectively), highest in Prague (61±20 and 43±23 μg m−3), with Basel in between (36±13 and 27±13 μg m−3). Average workplace NO2 levels, however, were highest in Basel (36±24 μg m−3), lowest in Helsinki (27±15 μg m−3), with Prague in between (30±18 μg m−3). A time-weighted microenvironmental exposure model explained 74% of the personal NO2 exposure variation in all centres and in average 88% of the exposures. Log-linear regression models, using residential outdoor measurements (fixed site monitoring) combined with residential and work characteristics (i.e. work location, using gas appliances and keeping windows open), explained 48% (37%) of the personal NO2 exposure variation. Regression models based on ambient fixed site concentrations alone explained only 11–19% of personal NO2 exposure variation. Thus, ambient fixed site monitoring alone was a poor predictor for personal NO2 exposure variation, but adding personal questionnaire information can significantly improve the predicting power.  相似文献

Abstract

An annular denuder system, which consisted of a cyclone separator; two diffusion denuders coated with sodium carbonate and citric acid, respectively; and a filter pack consisting of Teflon and nylon filters in series, was used to measure acid gases, ammonia (NH3), and fine particles in the atmosphere from April 1998 to March 1999 in eastern North Carolina (i.e., an NH3?rich environment). The sodium carbonate denuders yielded average acid gas concentrations of 0.23 μg/m3 hydrochloric acid (standard deviation [SD] ± 0.2 μg/m3); 1.14 μg/m3 nitric acid (SD ± 0.81 μg/m3), and 1.61 μg/m3 sulfuric acid (SD ± 1.58 μg/m3). The citric acid denuders yielded an average concentration of 17.89 μg/m3 NH3 (SD ± 15.03 μg/m3). The filters yielded average fine aerosol concentrations of 1.64 μg/m3 ammonium (NH4 +;SD ± 1.26 μg/m3); 0.26 μg/m3 chloride (SD ± 0.69 μg/m3), 1.92 μg/m3 nitrate (SD ± 1.09 μg/m3), and 3.18 μg/m3 sulfate (SO4 2?; SD ± 3.12 μg/m3). From seasonal variation, the measured particulates (NH4 +,SO4 2?, and nitrate) showed larger peak concentrations during summer, suggesting that the gas-to-particle conversion was efficient during summer. The aerosol fraction in this study area indicated the domination of ammonium sulfate particles because of the local abundance of NH3, and the long-range transport of SO4 2? based on back trajectory analysis. Relative humidity effects on gas-to-particle conversion processes were analyzed by particulate NH4 + concentration originally formed from the neutralization processes with the secondary pollutants in the atmosphere.  相似文献

Micrometeorological flux-gradient and nocturnal boundary layer methods were combined with Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy for high-precision trace gas analysis to measure fluxes of the trace gases CO2, CH4 and N2O between agricultural fields and the atmosphere. The FTIR measurements were fully automated and routinely obtained a precision of 0.1–0.2% for several weeks during a measurement campaign in October 1995. In flux-gradient measurements, vertical profiles of the trace gases were measured every 30 min from the ground to 22 m. When combined with independent micrometeorological measurements of water vapour fluxes, trace gas fluxes from the underlying surface could be determined. In the nocturnal boundary layer method the rate of change in mass storage in the 0–22 m layer was combined with fluxes measured at 22 m to estimate surface fluxes. Daytime fluxes for CO2 were −0.78±0.40 (1σ) mg CO2 m−2 s−1. Daytime fluxes of N2O and CH4 were very small and difficult to measure reliably using the flux-gradient technique, despite the high precision of the concentration measurements. Mean daytime flux for N2O was 17±48 ng N m−2 s−1, while the corresponding flux for CH4 was 47±410 ng CH4 m−2 s−1. The mean nighttime flux of CO2 estimated using the nocturnal boundary layer method was +0.15±0.05 mg CO2 m−2 s−1, in good agreement with chamber measurements of respiration rates. Nighttime fluxes of CH4 and N2O from the nocturnal boundary layer method were 109±69 ng CH4 m−2 s−1 and 2±3.2 ng N m−2 s−1, respectively, in good agreement with chamber measurements and inventory estimates based on the sheep and cattle stocking rates in the region. The suitability of FTIR-based methods for long term monitoring of spatially and temporally averaged flux measurements is discussed.  相似文献

In the United States, fertilized corn fields, which make up approximately 5% of the total land area, account for approximately 45% of total soil NOx emissions. Leaf chamber measurements were conducted of NO and NO2 fluxes between individual corn leaves and the atmosphere in (1) field-grown plants near Champaign, IL (USA) in order to assess the potential role of corn canopies in mitigating soil–NOx emissions to the atmosphere, and (2) greenhouse-grown plants in order to study the influence of various environmental variables and physiological factors on the dynamics of NO2 flux. In field-grown plants, fluxes of NO were small and inconsistent from plant to plant. At ambient NO concentrations between 0.1 and 0.3 ppbv, average fluxes were zero. At ambient NO concentrations above 1 ppbv, NO uptake occurred, but fluxes were so small (14.3±0.0 pmol m−2 s−1) as to be insignificant in the NOx inventory for this site. In field-grown plants, NO2 was emitted to the atmosphere at ambient NO2 concentrations below 0.9 ppbv (the NO2 compensation point), with the highest rate of emission being 50 pmol m−2 s−1 at 0.2 ppbv. NO2 was assimilated by corn leaves at ambient NO2 concentrations above 0.9 ppbv, with the maximum observed uptake rate being 643 pmol m−2 s−1 at 6 ppbv. When fluxes above 0.9 ppbv are standardized for ambient NO2 concentration, the resultant deposition velocity was 1.2±0.1 mm s−1. When scaled to the entire corn canopy, NO2 uptake rates can be estimated to be as much as 27% of the soil-emitted NOx. In greenhouse-grown and field-grown leaves, NO2 deposition velocity was dependent on incident photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD; 400–700 nm), whether measured above or below the NO2 compensation point. The shape of the PPFD dependence, and its response to ambient humidity in an experiment with greenhouse-grown plants, led to the conclusion that stomatal conductance is a primary determinant of the PPFD response. However, in field-grown leaves, measured NO2 deposition velocities were always lower than those predicted by a model solely dependent on stomatal conductance. It is concluded that NO2 uptake rate is highest when N availability is highest, not when the leaf deficit for N is highest. It is also concluded that the primary limitations to leaf-level NO2 uptake concern both stomatal and mesophyll components.  相似文献

The estimated annual throughfall deposition flux of Hg in a northern mixed-hardwood forest in the Lake Huron Watershed was 10.5±1.0 μg m−2 compared to an annual precipitation Hg flux of 8.7±0.5 μg m−2 (June 1996–June 1997). The source of this additional Hg in throughfall is often attributed to wash-off of dry deposition, but foliar leaching of Hg may also be important. To determine the influence of both dry deposition and foliar leaching of Hg and other elements in throughfall, we measured a suite of trace elements (Hg, Al, Mg, V, Mn, Cu, Zn, As, Rb, Sr, Cd, Ba, La, Ce, and Pb) in throughfall, precipitation, and ambient air samples from a northern mixed-hardwood forest. Based on a multiple linear regression model, dry deposition had the most important influence on Hg, Al, La, Ce, V, As, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb fluxes while foliar leaching strongly influenced Mg, Mn, Rb, Sr, and Ba fluxes in net throughfall. The Hg dry deposition flux was estimated using gaseous and aerosol Hg measurements and modeled deposition velocities. The calculated dry deposition flux (∼12–14 μg m−2) of Hg to the canopy indicated that atmospheric deposition of Hg could easily account for all of the Hg deposited in net throughfall (1.9±0.1 μg m−2). Although there is a large uncertainty associated with these techniques, the modeling estimates indicate that atmospheric Hg may account for all of the Hg deposited in litterfall (11.4±2.8 μg m−2).  相似文献

Behavioral and environmental determinants of PM2.5 personal exposures were analyzed for 201 randomly selected adult participants (25–55 years old) of the EXPOLIS study in Helsinki, Finland. Personal exposure concentrations were higher than respective residential outdoor, residential indoor and workplace indoor concentrations for both smokers and non-smokers. Mean personal exposure concentrations of active smokers (31.0±31.4 μg m−3) were almost double those of participants exposed to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) (16.6±11.8 μg m−3) and three times those of participants not exposed to tobacco smoke (9.9±6.2 μg m−3). Mean indoor concentrations of PM2.5 when a member of the household smoked indoors (20.8±23.9 μg m−3) were approximately 2.5 times the concentrations of PM2.5 when no smoking was reported (8.2±5.2 μg m−3). Interestingly, however, both mean (8.2 μg m−3) and median (6.9 μg m−3) residential indoor concentrations for non-ETS exposed participants were lower than residential outdoor concentrations (9.5 and 7.3 μg m−3, respectively). In simple linear regression models residential indoor concentrations were the best predictors of personal exposure concentrations. Correlations (r2) between PM2.5 personal exposure concentrations of all participants, both smoking and non-smoking, and residential indoor, workplace indoor, residential outdoor and ambient fixed site concentrations were 0.53, 0.38, 0.17 and 0.16, respectively. Predictors for personal exposure concentrations of non-ETS exposed participants identified in multiple regression were residential indoor concentrations, workplace concentrations and traffic density in the nearest street from home, which accounted for 77% of the variance. Subsequently, step-wise regression not including residential and workplace indoor concentrations as input (as these are frequently not available), identified ambient PM2.5 concentration and home location, as predictors of personal exposure, accounting for 47% of the variance. Ambient fixed site PM2.5 concentrations were closely related to residential outdoor concentrations (r2=0.9, p=0.000) and PM2.5 personal exposure concentrations were higher in summer than during other seasons. Personal exposure concentrations were significantly (p=0.040) higher for individuals living downtown compared with individuals in suburban family homes. Further analysis will focus on comparisons of determinants between Helsinki and other EXPOLIS centers.  相似文献

A 60-m flux tower was built on a 2100 m mountain for the measurement of the air pollutant concentration and the evaluation of dry deposition velocity in Central Taiwan. The tower was constructed in an evergreen broadleaf forest, which is the dominant species of forest in the world. Multiple-level SO2 concentrations and meteorological variables at the site were measured from February to April 2008. The results showed that the mean dry deposition velocities of SO2 were 0.61 cm s?1 during daytime and 0.27 cm s?1 during nighttime. From the comparison of the monthly data, a tendency was observed that the dry deposition velocity increases with LAI and solar radiation. Furthermore, it was observed that the deposition velocity was larger over wet canopy than over dry canopy, and that higher deposition velocities in the wet season were mainly caused by non-stomatal uptake of wet canopy. Over wet canopy, the mean dry deposition velocities of SO2 were estimated to be 0.83 cm s?1 during daytime and 0.47 cm s?1 during nighttime; and 0.44 cm s?1 during daytime and 0.19 cm s?1 during nighttime over dry canopy. There is good agreement between the results of this study and those in other studies and the predictions of Zhang et al. (2003a). The medians (geometric means) of derived rc during daytime are 233 (266) m s?1 over dry canopy and 147 (146) m s?1 over wet canopy. It was found that solar radiation is the critical important meteorological variable determining stomatal resistance during daytime. For non-stomatal resistance, clear dependencies were observed on the friction velocity and relative humidity.  相似文献

Potassium carbonate sulfation plates, monitored monthly for 11 years from 48 sites in 11 cities in Gansu Province, China, provide a crude estimate of cumulative SO2 dry depositions. Measured SO2 dry deposition rates were 1.6–472 mg m−2 day−1 and had seasonal variations with maxima in winter and minima mainly during summer as a result of higher winter and lower summer SO2 concentrations. The 11-year monthly average SO2 dry deposition rates are 23.2–248.97 and 11.7–175.6 mg m−2 day−1 in the eleven cities in winter and summer, respectively. A monthly average SO2 deposition velocity was also estimated from 0.06 to 9.72 cm s−2 in the 11 cities studied with a 11-year average maximum value of about 1.1–2.7 cm s−2 in April and July and a 11-year average minimum value of about 0.2–1.0 cm s−1 in January. The SO2 dry deposition velocity also exhibits an increasing with wind speed in basins of less than 500 mm annual precipitation. In contrast, due to influences of the relative humidity in valleys of more than 500 mm annual precipitation, it shows a decreasing trend with wind speed increasing.  相似文献

A chamber placed in a constant temperature freezing room was used to study the surface resistance during deposition of HNO3 to a snow surface. The resistance decreased with increasing temperature from larger than 5 s mm−1 at − 18°C to about l s mm−1 at −3°C. Measurements of gaseous and particulate nitrate concentrations during winter at a rural site in south central Sweden gave concentrations in the range of 0.4–5 μg HNO3 m−1 and 0.3–3 μg NO3 m−3 with a mean value of 1.3 μg HNO3 m−3 and 0.7 μg NO3 m−3, respectively. The results indicate that for periods with temperatures below − 2°C estimated dry deposition of HNO3 to snow is at most 4 % of measured wet deposition of nitrate in the area.  相似文献

Currently, in operational modelling of NH3 deposition a fixed value of canopy resistance (Rc) is generally applied, irrespective of the plant species and NH3 concentration. This study determined the effect of NH3 concentration on deposition processes to individual moorland species. An innovative flux chamber system was used to provide accurate continuous measurements of NH3 deposition to Deschampsia cespitosa (L.) Beauv., Calluna vulgaris (L.) Hull, Eriophorum vaginatum L., Cladonia spp., Sphagnum spp., and Pleurozium schreberi (Brid.) Mitt. Measurements were conducted across a wide range of NH3 concentrations (1–140 μg m−3).NH3 concentration directly affects the deposition processes to the vegetation canopy, with Rc, and cuticular resistance (Rw) increasing with increasing NH3 concentration, for all the species and vegetation communities tested. For example, the Rc for C. vulgaris increased from 14 s m−1 at 2 μg m−3 to 112 s m−1 at 80 μg m−3. Diurnal variations in NH3 uptake were observed for higher plants, due to stomatal uptake; however, no diurnal variations were shown for non-stomatal plants. Rc for C. vulgaris at 80 μg m−3 was 66 and 112 s m−1 during day and night, respectively. Differences were found in NH3 deposition between plant species and vegetation communities: Sphagnum had the lowest Rc (3 s m−1 at 2 μg m−3 to 23 at 80 μg m−3), and D. cespitosa had the highest nighttime value (18 s m−1 at 2 μg m−3 to 197 s m−1 at 80 μg m−3).  相似文献

A study of deposition velocities to snow was conducted during the 1982–1983 and 1983–1984 winters at the University of Michigan Biological Station in northern Michigan. Weekly measurements were made of dry deposition rates to snow and the atmospheric concentrations of the depositing species. SO2, with an average concentration of 2.2 ppb, was the dominant atmospheric sulfur containing species. NO2, with an average concentration of 1.8 ppb, was the dominant atmospheric nitrogenous species. NO3 deposition was due primarily to HNO3, which averaged 0.2 ppb. The HNO3 deposition velocity averaged 1.4cm s−1. The SO2 deposition velocity varied with temperature, averaging 0.15 cm s−1 for samples with appreciable exposure time above − 3°C, and 0.06 cm s−1 for samples which remained below an ambient temperature of −3°C. Deposition velocities of Ca2+, Mg2+ , Na+, K+ and NH+4 were 2.1, 1.5, 0.44, 0.51 and 0.10cm s−1, respectively. The mass median diameters of these species were 4.4, 2.7, 1.8, 0.9 and 0.46 μm, respectively.  相似文献

The aerosol scattering properties were investigated at two continental sites in northern China in 2004. Aerosol light scattering coefficient (σsp) at 525 nm, PM10, and aerosol mass scattering efficiencies (α) at Dunhuang had a mean value of 165.1±148.8 M m−1, 157.6±270.0 μg m−3, and 2.30±3.41 m2 g−1, respectively, while these values at Dongsheng were, respectively, 180.2±151.9 M m−1, 119.0±112.9 μg m−3, and 1.87±1.41 m2 g−1. There existed a seasonal variability of aerosol scattering properties. In spring, at Dunhuang PM10, σsp, and α were 184.1±211.548 μg m−3, 126.3±89.6 M m−1, and 1.05±0.97 m2 g−1, respectively, and these values at Dongsheng were 146.4±142.1 μg m−3, 183.4±81.7 M m−1, and 1.98±1.52 m2 g−1, respectively. However, in winter at Dunhuang PM10, σsp, and α were 158.1±261.4 μg m−3, 303.3±165.2 M m−1, and 3.17±1.93 m2 g−1, respectively, and these values at Dongsheng were 155.7±170.1 μg m−3, 304.4±158.1 M m−1, and 2.90±1.72 m2 g−1, respectively. σsp and α in winter were higher than that in spring at both the sites, which coincides with the characteristics of dust aerosol and pollution aerosol. Overall, the dominant aerosol types in spring and winter at both sites in northern China are dust aerosol and pollution aerosol, respectively.  相似文献

Dry deposition modelling typically assumes that canopy resistance (Rc) is independent of ammonia (NH3) concentration. An innovative flux chamber system was used to provide accurate continuous measurements of NH3 deposition to a moorland composed of a mixture of Calluna vulgaris (L.) Hull, Eriophorum vaginatum L. and Sphagnum spp. Ammonia was applied at a wide range of concentrations (1–100 μg m−3). The physical and environmental properties and the testing of the chamber are described, as well as results for the moorland vegetation using the ‘canopy resistance’ and ‘canopy compensation point’ interpretations of the data. Results for moorland plant species demonstrate that NH3 concentration directly affects the rate of NH3 deposition to the vegetation canopy, with Rc and cuticular resistance (Rw) increasing with increasing NH3 concentrations. Differences in Rc were found between night and day: during the night Rc increases from 17 s m−1 at 10 μg m−3 to 95 s m−1 at 80 μg m−3, whereas during the day Rc increases from 17 s m−1 at 10 μg m−3 to 48 s m−1 at 80 μg m−3. The lower resistance during the day is caused by the stomata being open and available as a deposition route to the plant. Rw increased with increasing NH3 concentrations and was not significantly different between day and night (at 80 μg m−3 NH3 day Rw=88 s m−1 and night Rw=95 s m−1). The results demonstrate that assessments using fixed Rc will over-estimate NH3 deposition at high concentrations (over ∼15 μg m−3).  相似文献

Individual leaves of Phaseolus vulgaris L. were exposed for 9 h in a leaf chamber to different NH3 concentrations at different light intensities. The rates of NH3-uptake, transpiration and photosynthesis were measured simultaneously. The flux density of NH3 increased linearly with concentration in the range of 4–400μg m−3. Flux densities also increased with light intensity. Resistance analysis indicated that NH3 transport into the leaf is via the stomata: transport via the cuticle is negligible under the experimental conditions. There is no internal resistance against NH3 transport. The NH3 flux was found not to influence the photosynthesis.  相似文献

Dimethyl sulfide (DMS) and atmospheric aerosols were sampled simultaneously over the Atlantic Ocean in the vicinity of Bermuda using the NOAA King Air research aircraft. Total and fine (50% cutoff at 2 μm diameter) aerosol fractions were sampled using two independent systems. The average nonsea-salt (nss)SO42− concentrations were 1.9 and 1.0 μg m−3 (as SO42−) for the total and the fine fractions in the boundary layer (BL) and 0.53 and 0.27 μg m−3 in the free troposphere (FT). Non-sea-salt SO42− in the two aerosol fractions were highly correlated (r = 0.90), however a smaller percentage (55%) was found in the fine aerosol near Bermuda relative to that (90%) near the North American continent. The BL SO42− concentrations measured in this study were higher than those measured by others at remote marine locations despite the fact that the 7-day air mass back trajectories indicated little or no continental contact at altitudes of 700 mb and below; the trajectories were over subtropical oceanic areas that are expected to be rich in DMS. DMS concentrations were higher near the ocean surface and decreased with increasing altitude within the BL; the average DMS concentration was 0.13 μg m−3. Trace levels of DMS were also measured in the FT (0.01 μg m−3). Computer simultation of the oxidation and removal of DMS in the marine atmosphere suggests that <50% of the SO42− observed could be related to the natural S cycle.  相似文献

Journey-time exposures to particulate air pollution were investigated in Leicester, UK, between January and March 2005. Samples of TSP, PM10, PM2.5, and PM1 were simultaneously collected using light scattering devices whilst journeys were made by walking an in-car. Over a period of two months, 33 pairs of walking and in-car measurements were collected along two circular routes. Average exposures while walking were seen to be higher than those found in-car for each of the particle fractions: average walking to in-car ratios were 1.2 (± 0.6), 1.5 (± 0.6), 1.3 (± 0.6), and 1.4 (± 0.6) μg m−3 for coarse (TSP–PM10), intermediate (PM10–PM2.5), fine (PM2.5–PM1), and very fine particles (PM1), respectively. Correlations between walking and in-car exposures were seen to be weak for coarse particles (r=0.10, p=0.58), moderate for the intermediate particles (r=0.49, p<0.01) but strong for fine (r=0.89, p<0.01) and very fine (r=0.90, P<0.01) particles. PM10 exposures while walking were on average 70% higher than a nearby roadside fixed-site monitor whilst in-car exposures were 25% higher than the same fixed-site monitor. Particles with an aerodynamic diameter of less than 2.5 μm were seen to be highly correlated between walking and in-car particle exposures and a rural fixed-site monitor about 30 km south of Leicester.  相似文献

In this study, we present ∼1 yr (October 1998–September 1999) of 12-hour mean ammonia (NH3), ammonium (NH4+), hydrochloric acid (HCl), chloride (Cl), nitrate (NO3), nitric acid (HNO3), nitrous acid (HONO), sulfate (SO42−), and sulfur dioxide (SO2) concentrations measured at an agricultural site in North Carolina's Coastal Plain region. Mean gas concentrations were 0.46, 1.21, 0.54, 5.55, and 4.15 μg m−3 for HCl, HNO3, HONO, NH3, and SO2, respectively. Mean aerosol concentrations were 1.44, 1.23, 0.08, and 3.37 μg m−3 for NH4+, NO3, Cl, and SO42−, respectively. Ammonia, NH4+, HNO3, and SO42− exhibit higher concentrations during the summer, while higher SO2 concentrations occur during winter. A meteorology-based multivariate regression model using temperature, wind speed, and wind direction explains 76% of the variation in 12-hour mean NH3 concentrations (n=601). Ammonia concentration increases exponentially with temperature, which explains the majority of variation (54%) in 12-hour mean NH3 concentrations. Dependence of NH3 concentration on wind direction suggests a local source influence. Ammonia accounts for >70% of NHx (NHx=NH3+NH4+) during all seasons. Ammonium nitrate and sulfate aerosol formation does not appear to be NH3 limited. Sulfate is primarily associated ammonium sulfate, rather than bisulfate, except during the winter when the ratio of NO3–NH4+ is ∼0.66. The annual average NO3–NH4+ ratio is ∼0.25.  相似文献
