The distribution and abundance of the late-stage phyllosoma larvae of Panulirus longipes cygnus George and the distribution and densities of the final larval stage, the puerulus, both in the plankton and at settlement along the coast, were investigated. A total of 3,617 late-stage phyllosoma (Stages VI to IX) and 301 puerulus larvae were caught at 187 plankton stations during the July to November periods 1974, 1975 and 1976 off the west coast of Australia between 29°00 to 32°30S and 113°30 to 115°00E. The depth range sampled was 0 to 35 m on the continental shelf and 0 to 90 m off the shelf. During onshore/offshore cruises with similar sampling effort on and off the shelf, 1,169 late-stage phyllosoma larvae were taken, of which only 9 were caught on the shelf, and these near the outer edge. A series of cruises sampling two areas beyond the shelf near 29°30 and 32°00S yielded 2448 late-stage phyllosoma, with greater densities of larvae in the northern location. The settlement of puerulus-stage larvae along the coast in the same geographical range was also greater in the north than in the south. The data from the onshore/offshore cruises showed a definite effect of moon phase on numbers of puerulus larvae caught on the shelf, with higher catches near new moon. The low numbers of puerulus larvae (usually 0, 1 or 2 individuals) caught at all stations showed that the puerulus stage is sparsely distributed in the plankton. Fewer puerulus larvae were present at the surface than at lower depths, but it was not possible to determine a depth preference for the puerulus between 10 m and the lowest depths sampled because of the low catch numbers. No relationships were found between puerulus larvae density and surface-water temperature, salinity, or plankton biomass at each station. Data on the larval distributions indicate that, near the end of their planktonic existence, the majority of the late-stage phyllosoma larvae of P. longipes cygnus are not carried onto the shelf, where mixing of oceanic and continental shelf waters occurs only on the outer third, but are transported southward by oceanic circulation beyond the shelf. The puerulus moults from the last phyllosoma stage beyond the shelf and completes the larval cycle by swimming across the shelf and settling in the shallow reef areas.  相似文献

The gut contents of dominant deep-sea benthic boundary layer zooplankton (primarily copepods and mysids) and the vacuole contents of phaeodarians collected and preserved in situ at four depths (from 724 to 3112 m) on an eastern tropical Pacific seamount (Volcano 7; 13°23N, 102°27W) between 23 November and 4 December 1988 were analyzed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Suspended, and sinking plus resuspended particles, were quantitatively sampled to characterize potential food sources. The broad oxygen minimum characteristic of this region intersects the summit of the seamount and affects the feeding ecology of these organisms. Several copepods and mysids and an amphipod contained guts packed with what appeared to be gram-positive bacteria, an unusual finding. We hypothesize that the source of these bacteria-like bodies was a mat or aggregate that originated in the oxygen minimum or at its upper or lower interface. The presence of the bacteria-like bodies in 43 to 100% of the particlefeeding zooplankton that were sectioned and that had gut contents, suggests that the bacteria-like bodies are an important food source. The diverse gut and vacuole contents of other detritivores were similar among depths. Particles and microorganisms from the depths were also similar. This finding can be explained by the rapid sinking of particles and aggregates from surface waters and their relatively intact transit through the broad oxygen minimum with its reduced populations of zooplankton. The presence of algal cells in guts and vacuoles of benthic boundary-layer zooplankton suggests that these zooplankton select particles of recent surface origin for consumption. The presence of the guts filled with bacteria-like bodies shows that some deep-sea copepods and mysids that are normally generalist feeders can specialize opportunistically. The similarity of gut contents of crustaceans and vacuole contents of phaeodarians suggests that these two very different groups of particle feeders utilize similar food sources in the deep sea.  相似文献

Hyperiid amphipods in the eastern part of the South Pacific gyre   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Studies were made of Amphipoda Hyperiidea collected in 1987 with a pelagic trawl in the South Pacific anticyclonic gyre in the vicinity of the Nazca and Sala y Gómez ridges (17°35 to 26°01S, 80°10 to 100°50W), at depths ranging from 50 to 300 or 600 m. Forty-three hauls contained 7 198 specimens, comprised of 119 species within 43 genera. Two of the species appeared to be new for science; two others were found in the Pacific Ocean for the first time. A comparison with hyperiid collections from other tropical Pacific regions revealed great stability of oceanic faunal composion. However, the collections differed considerably in their dominant species. Furthermore, comparison of Hyperiidea from various parts within the investigated area of the South Pacific gyre also reflected differences in dominant species. The degree of these mesoscale spatial differences was comparable to that among the central regions of the northern and southern anticyclonic gyres.  相似文献

Vertical distributions of picophytoplankton (ppp) (<2 m) were studied by ship-board flow cytometry during two cruises in Western Pacific waters to Palau and to Australia in 1990. Weak red-fluorescing small ppp, supposed to be free-living prochlorophytes (Chisholm et al. 1988), were abundant in the area surveyed. These ppp, designated the prochlorophytes, were abundant in the surface waters (>104 cells ml-1) at the northern region (27°03N; 7°11N) in November, whereas in December at the southern tropical stations (0°23.54S; 9°20.30S; 13°50.6S), they formed subsurface maximum layers (>105 cells ml-1) on a nitracline at a depth of 3.5 to 5.4% surface irradiation. Their fluorescence intensity increased with depth below 10% surface irradiation. The prochlorophytes at a depth of 1% surface irradiation had ten times higher fluorescence than those at the surface layer. The total fluorescence intensity of the prochlorophytes accounted for 32 to 63% of the sum of the total fluorescence intensity of all fluorescing phytoplankton detected at subsurface chlorophyll maxima in the tropical area. These results suggest that distribution of the prochlorophytes is greatly affected by nitracline and by light intensity and that their chlorophyll is a major contributor to the subsurface chlorophyll maximum in the pelagic West Pacific Ocean.  相似文献

The recolonization by harpacticoid copepods of patches disturbed by stingrays [Dasyatis sabina (LeSeur)] feeding in a subtidal (2–3 m depth) site off the Florida gulf coast (Lat. 29°54.55N, Long. 84°31.45W) was followed. Samples from disturbed patches could no longer be distinguished from control samples in terms of numbers of harpacticoids 29 h after disturbance. No species became significantly disproportionately abundant during the recovery suggesting that small-scale natural disturbances are not an important organizing force in this community.  相似文献

The sex ratios of deep-sea harpacticoids have been thought to be greatly skewed toward females. The representation of males is notably more equitable (approximately 1:2) at three deep-sea sites (San Diego Trough: 32°52.4N, 117°45.5W, 1 050 m, January 1987; Porcupine Seabight: 51°36.85N, 12°57.30W, 1 369 m, August 1984; northwest Atlantic, 40°27N, 62°20W, 4 820 m, July 1982, June 1983). This ratio conceals extensive variation at the species level. For some species, males are unknown. For other species, males are more numerous than females. Sampling bias against males can occur and may explain the more extreme reports of male rareness in the literature.  相似文献

The reproductive cycle of the bipolar sipunculan Golfingia margaritacea collected from Ushuaia, Argentina (54°49 S; 68°13W) in 1986 and 1987 is reported. The population sampled showed a sex ratio of 1:1. Males, however, frequently outnumbered females. Measurements of coelomic oocytes delineated an annual reproductive cycle. Small oocytes were present in the coelom all year: a subpopulation began to increase size about the middle of spring and reached its maximum size in late summer. Spawns may occur from the end February to April. May is characterized by resorption of large oocytes. Monthy monitoring of the gonads revealed mitotic activity and a continuous release of gametocytes to the coelom. Parasites were detected in the gonads. Large coelomic oocytes were also present in the coelom during the same season in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, but egg sizes were significantly larger in boreal populations.  相似文献

Gametophytes of Ecklonia radiata (C.Ag.)J.Ag. grew in culture at 15°C under daily quantum doses ranging from 0.86 to 360 cE m-2. Growth rates increased with quantum doses up to 40 cE m-2 d-1, then reproduction began and the relative growth constant declined while ovum release came earlier with increasing light up to about 100 cE m-2 d-1. Above 100 cE m-2 d-1 there were no consistent trends with increasing light, except that at the higher quantum doses, fertile female plants had fewer and larger cells and therefore fewer potential ova. Reproduction varied with daily quantum dose rather than with daylength. Given the same daily dose, plants grew fastest in low photon flux density, long daylength conditions. Gametophytes grown in the field developed at similar rates to those in culture. Gametophytes survived seven months of darkness at 10°C but died after one week of darkness at 20° to 23°C. Sunlight of 1 000 E m-2 s-1 was fatal to gametophytes and to sporophytes under 2 mm long after 10 to 15 min. Light budgets were prepared for plants growing at 7-and 15-m depths from 1976 to May 1980 in Goat Island Bay, New Zealand (Lat.36° 16S, Long. 174° 48E). Underwater light was measured under various environmental conditions. Relationships between transmission of light through the sea, data from diving visibility records and continuous surface meteorological records were studied. Approximations were made of the average percentage of surface light transmitted to 7 and 15 m over half-monthly periods. By applying these average transmittance values to the records of surface incident light, the average daily quantum doses were calculated. Light on open bottom in Goat Island Bay may sometimes be limiting for gametophyte reproduction in winter at 15-m depth. At depths less than 7 m, summer photon flux densities may reach damaging levels.  相似文献

Intertidal organisms may employ circatidal rhythms to track the tidal cycle, but tidal patterns may vary within a species range and necessitate adaptation to the local tides. Circatidal rhythms were examined in populations of the eastern Pacific fiddler crab Uca princeps (Smith) from four sites with differing tidal characteristics, La Paz (24°10N; 110°21W), San Blas (21°33N; 105°18W) and Manzanillo (19°6N; 104°24W), Mexico (lower amplitude, mixed semidiurnal tides) and Mata de Limon, Costa Rica (9°55N; 84°43W) (high-amplitude, semidiurnal tides). Local tides were characterized by harmonic constants of M2, S2, K1, and O1, partial tides that largely determine their semidiurnal and diurnal features. Rhythmic structure in continuously recorded locomotor activity of individual crabs held under laboratory conditions was described by cosinor and periodogram methods of time-series analysis. Both daily and circatidal rhythms were found in crabs studied in light–dark cycles set to local conditions at the time of collection. Crabs at all four sites shared a tendency toward bimodality, with a mid-morning activity peak and varying degrees of nocturnal activity. Circatidal rhythms closely matching the period of the 12.42-h M2 partial tide were consistently present at all sites except Manzanillo. At Mata de Limon, the circatidal rhythm clearly dominated locomotor activity, but was strongly modulated by a daily rhythm in a repeating pattern at a semilunar interval. In contrast, the amplitude of the daily rhythm was higher than that of the circatidal rhythm in crabs from the three mixed tide sites on the Mexican coast, where the tidal pattern is dominated by a diurnal inequality arising from the diurnal K1 and O1 partial tides. These results suggest that populations of U. princeps use both daily and circatidal timing systems to track local forms of the tide generated by their M2, S2, K1, and O1 geophysical counterparts.Communicated by J.P. Gametophytes of Ecklonia radiata (C.Ag.)J.Ag. from two New Zealand locations with different field temperature ranges were exposed to temperatures of 5° to 26°C in saturating light. Plants from Goat Island Bay (Lat. 36° 16S, Long. 174°48E) grew in 9.3° to 25°C and reproduced in 9.3° to 24°C. There was no growth at 8°C and plants died at 26°C. Plants from the cooler location, Houghton Bay (Lat. 41°20S, Long. 174°40E), grew from 8° to 24°C and reproduced up to 15°C but not at 21.5°C. The plants did not grow at 6°C and died at 26°C. The timing of the first cell division and subsequent growth rate were retarded close to the upper and lower tolerance limits. Reproduction was a broad optimum of roughly 12° to 20°C. Within this range, fertile female gametophytes grown at lower temperatures had fewer, larger cells and thus fewer potential ova than those grown at higher temperatures.  相似文献

The estuarine copepod Acartia tonsa was collected on several occasions between 4 April and 14 August 1985 from Terrebonne Bay, Louisiana (29°08N; 90°36W) and the effects in its diet of suspended sediments, collected from the same area, were measured at five different concentrations of sediment (100 to 1 000 ppm) and six phytoplankton concentrations (500 to 13 000 cells ml-1 Thalassiosira weissflogii). Egg production rate was used as an index of diet quality. At low phytoplankton concentrations (500 cells ml-1), and at intermediate phytoplankton concentrations (2 000 cells ml-1) for previously starved copepods, egg production was reduced by up to 40% at a sediment concentration of 250 ppm and further reduced at higher sediment concentrations. At higher food concentrations (4 000 to 13 000 cells ml-1), suspended sediment had no effect on egg production rates at sediment concentrations up to 500 ppm. Rates were reduced only at the highest sediment concentration of 1 000 ppm. Under most natural conditions, suspended sediment would not significantly affect egg production rates in A. tonsa.  相似文献

Reproductive periods and growth of two populations of Holothuria atra Jaeger distinctly different in body size at two sites of southern Taiwan were determined. Individuals examined in the present study were collected between march 1990 and February 1992. At Nanwan (21° 57N, 120° 45E), large individuals (351 to 1400 g wet wt) spawned from June to September. At Wanlitung (22°N, 120° 42E), a small proportion of frequently dividing individuals (<190 g wet wt) have mature gonads in May, June and September, but histological examination revealed no sign of spawning. Sexual recruits, defined as small individuals <5 g wet wt without sign of regeneration, were not found at either site during this 2-yr study. After the peak of fission at Wanlitung, 40% of the population showed signs of external regeneration. At Nanwan, small individuals transferred from Wanlitung grew from 6 g (n=6) to 166±8 g within 8 mo, and from 48±4 g (n=50) to 324±16 g within 1 yr, with a 6.8-fold biomass increase in 1 yr. At Wanlitung, the monthly average body weight of H. atra is between 33 and 62 g, apparently due to frequent fission, and the biomass increased only 2.9-fold in 1 yr. In southern Taiwan, sexual reproduction of H. atra occurs in large individuals. Asexual reproduction, occurring in small individuals, is the chief mechanism for population maintenance and increase, but it may decrease sexual reproductive potential.  相似文献

For crustaceans with a well-defined annual molting season, such as adult female Dungeness crabs (Cancer magister Dana), setal molt staging can, in principle, be used to predict molting destiny of individual crabs. Size-specific predictions of molting probability could, in turn, be useful for estimating mortalities due to molting. Female Dungeness crabs were collected January–March 1997 at depths of 10–30 m off the California coast, USA (41°N). Intermolt stage A1–C4 and premolt stages D0, D1, D1, D1 and D2 were described based on features of the branchial epipod. Laboratory experiments suggested that stage D1 was the earliest stage beyond which eventual molting was inevitable so that molting destiny could be determined. Estimated mean number of days from the beginning of stage D1 to molting was 85. Estimated individual stage durations, based on laboratory experiments, were 24, 51, –4, 18, and 20 days, respectively, for stages D0, D1, D1, D1, and >D2. The estimated –4 days for stage D1 suggests that this stage must be very brief and raises a question of its utility in designation of molt stages. Molt staging of three field samples, 300–600 crabs in each, collected prior to the 1997 annual molting season, indicated an increase in the size and frequency of crabs staged D1 or later as the time to molt approached, although crabs of 150 mm carapace width and larger showed few signs of molt preparation. Because the duration of the molting season (approximately 120 days) for adult female C. magister in northern California exceeds the estimated maximum duration of reliable prediction of molting destiny (85 days), it does not appear that molt staging can be used to predict molting destiny in this population. However, the procedures that we have used in this paper for application to female C. magister might be used with success for other crustaceans if the duration of stages D1 to molting exceeds the duration of the molting season, and furthermore may be used for describing temporal molting trends.Communicated by J.P. Using a hand dredge, a population of Cassidulus mitis Krau, 1954 was sampled monthly from February 1986 to January 1987 at 15 stations offshore from Vermelha Beach (22°5718 S; 43°948 W), in water depths ranging from 0 to 6 m. The sex ratio indicated a slight numerical dominance of females for adults and a larger numerical female dominance for juveniles. A von Bertalanffy growth curve was estimated as L=71.00 (1-e(-0.390t)), where L=length (mm) and t=time (yr). The instantaneous natural mortality rate (M) was estimated as 0.812. The population occupies a zone parallel to the beach, and displays a spatially aggregated pattern, with higher densities in areas characterized by coarse and very well sorted sand containing low amounts of organic matter.  相似文献

The behaviour of the oral arms of Pelagia noctiluca (Forsskål) has been investigated in open sea predation and in predation induced both in the laboratory and the natural environment. Specimens were first studied in the field and then collected from coastal aggregations in the Gulf of Trieste, North Adriatic Sea, in December 1985 (Lat. 13°40 E, Long. 45°42 N) and in June 1986 (Lat. 13°39 E, Long. 45°43 N). The results of laboratory experiments and in situ observations, recorded on videotapes and photographs, show that the marginal tentacles are utilized to: (1) paralyze the prey; (2) contract and bend inward towards the nearest oral arm. Occasionally the tentacle does not contract and the prey is released; thus prey selection may occur. The oral arms are therefore involved in the: (1) transport of prey from the tentacle to the gastric cavity; (2) catching of motionless prey; (3) anchoring the medusa to the substratum. A similar feeding pattern can explain the survival of several specimens of P. noctiluca near the bottom during the winter of 1985/1986 in the Gulf of Trieste (North Adriatic Sea) in spite of the severe climatic conditions.  相似文献

A total of 129 specimens ofLepidopsetta bilineata (Ayres) were collected in the eastern Bering Sea (57°02–58°11N; 161°58–164°38W) between 28 August and 7 September 1984. Examination of its stomach and intestine contents revealed that polychaetes, gammarid amphipods and echiuroids constitute the bulk of its diet. Prey type is related to fish size. Juveniles consume more mobile prey, such as small crustaceans (gammarid amphipods, cumaceans, carideans), while adults, although still continuing to feed on gammarid amphipods, preferentially feed on infaunal organisms such as polychaetes, echiuroids and mollusks. Some prey, such as echinoderms, fishes and urochordates, were encountered only in stomachs, which resulted in a higher index of feeding diversity for this organ. Rock sole feeds primarily during daylight hours, peaking at dusk. Its daily ration was estimated as 0.49, 1.12, and 1.61% of fish body weight from contents of stomach, intestine, and stomach plus intestine, respectively.  相似文献

We report the first record of infestation by the epizoic pennate diatoms (Licmophora sp.) of the euphausiidNyctiphanes australis (G. O. Sars, 1883) collected from Otago Harbour and coastal waters, New Zealand (45°50S; 170°37E) between October and April 1986–1989: at times up to 50 to 70% of the krill examined were infested. Infestation by epizoic diatoms introduces a significant source of error into determinations of egestion rates using gut fluorescence of whole individuals, and prevents measurement of background fluorescence in krill. Diatom infestation can lead to overestimation of ingestion rates by a factor of 2 to 5. We suggest that investigators using the gut fluorescence method to measure grazing rates should determine the occurrence of epizoic diatoms in samples prior to analysis. If diatoms are present, it is necessary to hold krill in the laboratory until diatoms are shed at moult before makingin vitro gut-pigment measurements. Alternatively, the stomachs must be dissected for analyses, negating the benefits of rapid sample preparation and quantitative recovery of pigments that are the advantage of the technique. Epizoic diatoms can significantly contribute to variability of apparentin situ ingestion rates inN. australis.  相似文献

Light-based archival tags are increasingly being used on free-ranging marine vertebrates to study their movements using geolocation estimates. These methods use algorithms that incorporate threshold light techniques to determine longitude and latitude. More recently, researchers have begun using sea surface temperature (SST) to determine latitude in temperate regions. The accuracy and application of these algorithms have not been validated on free-ranging birds. Errors in both geolocation methods were quantified by double-tagging Laysan (Phoebastria immutabilis Rothschild) and black-footed (P. nigripes Audubon) albatrosses with both leg-mounted archival tags that measured SST and ambient light, and satellite transmitters. Laysan albatrosses were captured and released from breeding colonies on Tern Island, northwestern Hawaiian Islands (23°52N, 166°17W) and Guadalupe Island, Mexico (28°31N, 118°10W) and black-footed albatrosses from Tern Island. Studies were carried out between December 2002 and March 2003. For all birds combined, the mean ± SD great circle (GC) distance between light-based locations and satellite-derived locations was 400±298 km (n=131). Errors in geolocation positions were reduced to 202±171 km (n=154) when light-based longitude and SST-based latitude (i.e. SST/light) were used to establish locations. The SST/light method produced comparable results for two Laysan albatross populations that traveled within distinctly different oceanic regions (open ocean vs more coastal) whereas light-based methods produced greater errors in the coastal population. Archival tags deployed on black-footed albatrosses returned a significantly higher proportion of lower-quality locations, which was attributed to interference of the light sensor on the tag. Overall, the results demonstrate that combining measures of light-based longitude and SST-based latitude significantly reduces the error in location estimates for albatrosses and can provide valid latitude estimates during the equinoxes, when light-based latitude measurements are indeterminate.Communicated by J.P. The age and habitat of the giant squid, Architeuthis sanctipauli Velain, 1877, were determined based on isotopic analyses of the statoliths of three female specimens captured off Tasmania, Australia, between January and March 1996. Assuming that the aragonite of the statoliths formed in equilibrium with seawater, 18O analyses indicated that the squid lived at temperatures of 10.5–12.9°C, corresponding to average depths of 125–250 m and maximum depths of 500 m. The capture records indicated that these squid may have occasionally ranged still deeper, to as much as 1000 m. All the statoliths were labeled with bomb 14C (14C=+22.9 to +44.6), consistent with the depths inferred from 18O. A thin section through one of the statoliths revealed 351 growth increments grouped into check-ring structures every 10–16 increments. A model for statolith growth and the pattern of temporal change in 14C in the water column was used to estimate the ages of the three specimens. These estimates were very sensitive to the choice of depth range over which 14C values were integrated. Assuming that the capture depths represented the maximum habitat depths of these individuals, the calculations suggested an age of 14 years or less. More refined age estimates require a better understanding of the variation of 14C and temperature with depth in the areas in which the squids live.Communicated by J.P. The present paper deals with ecological aspects of the pulmonate gastropod Siphonaria lessoni (Blainville, 1824), a common member of fouling communities in Mar del Plata's port (38°0817 S, 57°3118 W). Populations on colonized panels of an experimental raft were studied during three annual cycles, to determine feeding habits, growth and various factors which restrict their distribution on floating substrata. Although S. lessoni is harmless as a fouling organism, its grazing on the algal belt clears a part of the substratum's surface, which is then quickly colonized by truly aggressive organisms such as Balanus amphitrite.  相似文献
