Cell growth of a coastal marine diatom, Chaetoceros sociale, in the presence of different premixed organic-Fe(III) complexes [EDTA-Fe(III) (100:1 and 2:1), citric-Fe(III) (100:1) and fulvic-Fe(III) (0.1, 0.2 and 1 ppm C)] and solid amorphous hydrous ferric oxide [am-Fe(III) or Fe(III) hydroxide] were experimentally measured in culture experiments at 10 °C under 3000 lux fluorescent light. Fulvic-Fe(III) (0.1 and 0.2 ppm C) and citric-Fe(III) (100:1) induced maximal cell yields of C. sociale. The order of cell yields was: fulvic-Fe(III) (0.1 and 0.2 ppm C) ≥ citric-Fe(III) (100:1) > EDTA-Fe(III) (2:1) ≫ solid am-Fe(III) > EDTA-Fe(III) (100:1) ≫ fulvic-Fe(III) (1 ppm C). The short-term iron uptake rates by C. sociale in fulvic-Fe(III) (0.1 and 0.2 ppm C) and citric-Fe(III) (100:1) media were about five to six times faster than those in EDTA-Fe(III) (100:1) and solid am-Fe(III) media. The dissociative precipitation rates of premixed organic-Fe(III) complexes in seawater at 10 °C were determined by simple filtration (0.025 μm) involving γ-activity measurements of 59Fe. The order of estimated initial Fe(III) dissociative precipitation rates of these organic-Fe(III) complexes in seawater were nearly consistent with those of cell yields in the culture experiments and short-term iron uptake rates by C. sociale [except for fulvic-Fe(III) (1 ppm C) medium]. In fulvic-Fe(III) (0.1 and 0.2 ppm C), citric-Fe(III) (100:1) and EDTA-Fe(III) (2:1) media, the concentrations of dissolved organic-Fe(III) complexes in initial culture experiments are prone to supersaturate under the culture conditions. The supersaturated dissolved organic-Fe(III) complex in seawater supplies biologically available inorganic Fe(III) species in culture media through its dissociation at high pH and high levels of seawater cations. Therefore, the natural dissolved organic-Fe(III) complexes supplied by riverine input may play an important role in supplying bioavailable iron in estuarine mixing system and coastal waters. Availability of colloidal ferric oxides to coastal marine phytoplankton   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Cell growth of a coastal marine diatom, Phaeodactylum tricornutum (stock cultures), and two red tide marine flagellates, Heterosigma akashiwo and Gymnodinium mikimotoi (stock cultures), in the presence of soluble chelated Fe(III)-EDTA (1:2) and of four different phases of ferric oxide colloids were experimentally measured in culture experiments at 20°C under 3000 lux fluorescent light. Soluble Fe(III)-EDTA induced the maximal growth rates and cell yields. The short-term uptake rate of iron by H. akashiwo in Fe(III)-EDTA medium was about eight times faster than that in solid amorphous hydrous ferric oxide (Fe2O3·xH2O) medium. In culture experiments supplied with four different ferric oxide forms, the orders of cell yields are amorphous hydrous ferric oxide>-FeOOH (lepidocrocite)>Fe5O7(OH)·4H2O (hydrated ferric oxyhydroxide polymer >-FeOOH (goethite). The specific growth rates () at logarithmic growth phase in Fe(III)-EDTA, amorphous hydrous ferric oxide and -FeOOH media were significantly greater than those in Fe5O7 (OH)·4H2O and -FeOOH media. The thermodynamically stable forms such as Fe5O7(OH)·4H2O and -FeOOH supported a little or no phytoplankton growth. The iron solublities and/or proton-promoted iron dissolution rates of these colloidal ferric oxides in seawater at 20°C were determined by simple filtration techniques involving -activity measurements of 59Fe. The orders of solubilities and estimated dissolution rate constants of these ferric oxides in seawater were consistent with that of cell yields in the culture experiments. These results suggest that the availability of colloidal iron to provide a source of iron for phytoplankton is related to the thermodynamic stability and kinetic lability of the colloidal ferric oxide phases, which probably control the uptake rate of iron by phytoplankton.  相似文献

A controlled-temperature plankton wheel is described that is suitable for use on board a ship. The IMER plankton wheel system allows the use of various sizes of experimental bottles, up to 2.2 litres, the simulation of ambient light regimes and variable speed control for the rotation of the experimental bottles. The flexibility of the system was demonstrated by investigating the relationship between temperature and ingestion rate of an herbivorous copepod. Using four of the IMER plankton wheels simultaneously at four different temperatures (5°, 10°, 15° and 20° C), the ingestion rate of Calanus helgolandicus, feeding on Thalassiosira weissflogii, was shown to increase with increasing temperature; from a transformation of loge (ingestion rate), this relationship was calculated as a Q10 (10° to 20°C) for Copepodite Stage V (Q10 4.5) and adult female (Q10 2.7) C. helgolandicus. The possibility of damaging cells, by rotation at 2 rpm, was investigated using the spinose form of the diatom T. weissflogii. Such rotation did not cause any damage to the spines of T. weissflogii, but mixing this diatom with a magnetic stirrer bar did damage the spines to varying degrees, depending on the volume being mixed.  相似文献

The kinetics of Cr(VI) reduction to Cr(III) by metallic iron (Fe0) was studied in batch reactors for a range of reactant concentrations, pH and temperatures. Nearly 86.8% removal efficiency for Cr(VI) was achieved when Fe0 concentration was 6 g/L (using commercial iron powder (< 200 mesh) in 120 min). The reduction of hexavalent chromium took place on the surface of the iron particles following pseudo-first order kinetics. The rate of Cr(VI) reduction increased with increasing Fe0 addition and temperature but inversely with initial pH. The pseudo-first-order rate coefficients (k obs) were determined as 0.0024, 0.010, 0.0268 and 0.062 8 min?1 when iron powder dosages were 2, 6, 10 and 14 g/L at 25°C and pH 5.5, respectively. According to the Arrehenius equation, the apparent activation energy of 26.5 kJ/mol and pre-exponential factor of 3 330 min?1 were obtained at the temperature range of 288–308 K. Different Fe0 types were compared in this study. The reactivity was in the order starch-stabilized Fe0 nanoparticles > Fe0 nanoparticles > Fe0 powder > Fe0 filings. Electrochemical analysis of the reaction process showed that Cr(III) and Fe(III) hydroxides should be the dominant final products.  相似文献

The bioavailability of iron in seawater filtered through a 0.025-m filter was investigated using 59Fe-labeled iron uptake by the macroalga Laminaria japonica (Areschoug: Phaeophyta) (collected in the northern Japan Sea 1993) as an assay. About 80% of the iron in the 0.025-m filtered coastal seawater was soluble and/or small colloidal organically bound iron, associated with natural organic ligands forming complexes with ferric ion. After decomposition of the organic matter by ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, 55% of the iron addition [or 0.6 nM, nearly the concentration of Fe(OH) 2 + in equilibrium with amorphous hydrous ferric oxide in seawater at pH 8.0] in the 0.025-m filtered coastal seawater was taken up by the macroalga. Since the iron concentrations in the 0.025-m filtered coastal seawater are 0.1 to 2.0 nM and only 0.6 nM of the iron is likely available to biota over 1 to 2 d, we suggest that only small amounts of bioavailable iron exist in coastal seawater not affected by inflow from land and that a significant fraction of dissolved (<0.025 ) iron occurs in forms, such as organic iron complexes, other than the simple hydroxo-complex species predicted by thermodynamic models.  相似文献

Adsorption of arsenic (V) by natural zeolitic tuff, modified with iron (III), was investigated. Also, the iron (III) adsorption characteristics by natural zeolitic tuff was evaluated. It was determined that iron (III) adsorption by starting zeolitic tuff was best represented by the Freundlich type of isotherm, having correlation coefficient (r 2) of 0.990. Arsenic (V) adsorption by iron (III)-modified zeolitic tuff followed a nonlinear type of isotherm. The best fit of the experimental data was obtained using the Langmuir–Freundlich model (r 2 = 0.99), with the estimated maximum of arsenic (V) adsorption to iron (III)-modified zeolitic tuff of 1.55 mg/g.  相似文献

Laboratory and field filtration experiments were conducted to study the effectiveness of As(V) removal for five types of adsorbent media. The media included activated alumina (AA), modified activated alumina (MAA), granular ferric hydroxide (GFH), granular ferric oxide (GFO), and granular titanium dioxide (TiO2). In laboratory batch and column experiments, the synthetic challenge water was used to evaluate the effectiveness for five adsorbents. The results of the batch experiments showed that the As(V) adsorption decreased as follows at pH 6.5: TiO2 > GFO > GFH > MAA > AA. At pH 8.5, however, As(V) removal decreased in the following order: GFO = TiO2 > GFH > MAA > AA. In column experiments, at pH 6.5, the adsorbed As(V) for adsorbents followed the order: TiO2 > GFO > GFH, whereas at pH 8.5 the order became: GFO = TiO2 > GFH when the challenge water containing 50 μg/L of As(V) was used. Field filtration experiments were carried out in parallel at a wellhead in New Jersey. Before the effluent arsenic concentration increased to 10 μg/L, approximately 58,000 and 41,500 bed volumes of groundwater containing an average of 47 μg/L of As(V) were treated by the filter system packed with GFO and TiO2, respectively. The As(V) adsorption decreased in the following sequence: GFO > TiO2 > GFH > MAA > AA. Filtration results demonstrated that GFO and TiO2 adsorbents could be used as media in small community filtration systems for As(V) removal.  相似文献

Mixed zooplankton were collected in June and July of 1985 and 1986 from La Jolla Bay, California, USA, and experiments were conducted to determine how selected dinoflagellates affect development and survival of nauplius larvae of Calanus pacificus. We raised nauplii from eggs on nine species of dinoflagellates at concentrations generally >300 g C l-1, and compared their development and survival to controls reared using the diatom Thalassiosira weissflogii or filtered seawater. Experiments were conducted for 6 d at 17°C. Development and survival rates of the nauplii fell clearly into one of two groups, depending upon the phytoplankton used as food. The first group was characterized by high development rate (0.46 to 0.84 stage d-1), and by >27% of the original cohort surviving to at least Nauplius IV or V. The five species producing this result were Gymnodinium simplex, G. splendens, Exuviaella marie-lebourae, Gyrodinium dorsum, and T. weissflogii. The second group was characterized by a development rate similar to that in filtered seawater (0.21 to 0.34 stage d-1), and by nauplii generally failing to molt past the first feeding stage (Nauplius III), often accompanied by high mortality. The five species producing this result were Gyrodinium resplendens, Ptychodiscus brevis, Glenodinium sp., Amphidinium carterae, and Gonyaulax grindleyi. Development rate and survival were not related to cell size or cell carbon, nor to shape or texture (thecate vs athecate dinoflagellates). Poor growth could be related to the absence of some important, but unidentified, nutritional factors. Alternatively, it could be caused by the presence of plant secondary metabolites which are deleterious to growth, a factor we suspect in P. brevis in particular. Prefeeding nauplii exposed to P. brevis lost neuromuscular control prior to becoming lethargic and dying; nutritional deficiencies may not explain these effects. Methods employed in this study provide useful bioassays for detecting chemical interactions between marine plants and animals. Lethal or sublethal effects of dinoflagellates on their most likely potential predators — copepods — may partially explain why they form significant blooms.  相似文献

Two species of diatoms, Chaetoceros armatum T. West and Asterionella socialis Lewin and Norris, which account for virtually all of the plant biomass present in the surf zone along the Olympic Peninsula (USA), have been isolated and grown in culture, and comparisons have been made with respect to their physiological behavior in response to aeration, light, temperature, salinity, and nutrients. A. socialis displayed the greater maximum growth rate under most situations, which would give this species a natural advantage over C. armatum. However, in the natural habitat, C. armalum is by far the more important of the two, since the blooms often consist of almost pure stands of this species. This may be due to its apparent ability to use low light levels more efficiently. The maximum growth rate of C. armatum was reached at light levels of 750 to 1000 lux in cultures, whereas A. socialis required a higher light intensity (4000 lux) for maximum growth. C. armatum did not produce its mucilage envelope under any culture conditions. Such a mucilage envelope, with its accompanying clay particles, is invariably present surrounding the diatom chains when they are collected from the natural habitat. The absence of the mucilage envelope (and clay particles) may explain the peculiarities of iron nutrition which were observed in culture experiments, i.e., a dependence on the presence of iron as NaFe-EDTA or ferric citrate, and failure to utilize ferric choloride as a source of Fe for growth.Contribution No. 652 from the Department of Oceanography, University of Washington.  相似文献

The possible effect of Alexandrium spp. containing paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) toxins on the hemocytes of oysters was tested experimentally. In one trial, eastern oysters, Crassostrea virginica Gmelin, were exposed to bloom concentrations of the sympatric dinoflagellate, Alexandrium fundyense Balech, alone and in a mixture with a non-toxic diatom, Thalassiosira weissflogii (Grun) Fryxell et Hasle. Subsequently, another experiment exposed Pacific oysters, Crassostrea gigas Thunberg, to a mixed suspension of the sympatric, toxic species Alexandrium catenella (Whedon et Kofoid) Balech, with T. weissflogii. Measurements of numbers of oyster hemocytes, percentages of different cell types, and functions (phagocytosis, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and mortality) were made using flow-cytometry. During and after exposure, almost no significant effects of Alexandrium spp. upon hemocyte numbers, morphology, or functions were detected, despite observations of adductor-muscle paralysis in C. virginica and measured toxin accumulation in C. gigas. The only significant correlation found was between toxin accumulation at one temperature and higher numbers of circulating live and dead hemocytes in C. gigas. The PSP toxins are known to interfere specifically with sodium-channel function; therefore, the finding that the toxins had no effect on measured hemocyte functions suggests that sodium-channel physiology is not important in these hemocyte functions. Finally, because oysters were exposed to the living algae, not purified toxins, there was no evidence of bioactive compounds other than PSP toxins affecting hemocytes in the two species of Alexandrium studied.  相似文献

Effects of algal diet on digestive enzyme activity in Calanus helgolandicus   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Adult female Calanus helgolandicus were transferred, immediately after collection in the English Channel in June 1984, to two unialgal diets one of which, the flagellate Cryptomonas maculata, was rich in starch, while the other, the diatom Thalassiosira weissflogii, contained no starch. The activity of the digestive enzymes amylase, trypsin and laminarinase was measured in these two populations under foodsaturating conditions over an acclimation period of eight days. Ingestion rates were measured on a daily basis and the results confirmed, together with a constant level of body protein, that the experimental conditions were above the incipient limiting concentration. In the long-term (4 to 8 d), the activities of all three enzymes were significantly elevated in the C. maculata-fed copepods, whereas ingestion rates were lower than those on T. weissflogii. These results observed under food-saturating conditions indicate a compensatory mechanism between digestive enzymes and the substrate ingested. They are consistent with previous work on Artemia sp. suggesting that the rate of assimilation is a function of the digestive enzyme activity and ingestion rate. Enzyme activity exhibited differing shortterm responses (<48 h) on transfer to the two algal diets, which are interpreted in relation to the in situ activity of the field population.Communicated by J. Photodegradation kinetics of Monuron (3-(4-chlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea) in photoreactor with immobilized and suspended TiO2 photocatalyst were studied. The effect of addition of ferric or ferrous perchlorate was investigated. Whatever the concentration of Fe(III/II) added there is no significant negative effect on the photodegradation rate of pollutants. On the contrary, depending on speciation and concentration of iron salts, slight or marked acceleration of the photodegradation kinetics was observed. This positive influence was more pronounced in the case of TiO2 suspensions than for TiO2 layers. Fe(III) was generally more effective than Fe(II).  相似文献

This paper presents data on the concentrations of 5 metals, copper (Cu), cadmium (Cd), iron (Fe), zinc (Zn) and lead (Pb) in Blue Whiting sampled from the Eastern Black Sea coast of Turkey. The highest metal concentrations of Cu, Cd, Fe, Zn and Pb were recorded in Blue Whiting with the values of 2.71, 0.601, 14.137, 15.322 and 1.078 μg g‐1 dry weight, respectively. On average the metal concentrations in Blue Whiting followed the order of Zn > Fe > Cu > Pb > Cd. Temporal differences of concentrations of these metals were significant (p < 0.05). Spatial fluctuations of Cu, Cd, Fe, Zn and Pb concentrations in Blue Whiting were also significant (p < 0.01). It was found that the concentrations of Cu, Cd, Fe, Zn and Pb in the muscle in Blue Whiting were below the limit of Public Health Regulation in Turkey.  相似文献

Two marine mussels, Geukensia demissa (Dillwyn) and Mytilus edulis (L.) collected in 1990 in Old Silver Beach, Falmouth, Massachusetts, incorporated nitrogen when fed 15N-labelled organic aggregates produced from dissolved organic nitrogen released by the brown sea-weed Fucus vesiculosis. Uptake of 15N on the aggregate diet was linear over the course of 24 h, and unincorporated 15N was eliminated from the gut after 48 h. Both species of mussels incorporated approximately five times more N when they were fed organic aggregates than when they were fed either 15N-labelled dissolved organic material (DOM) or particulate detritus, both of which were also derived from the seaweed. Nitrogen uptake was greatest in controls fed the diatom Thalassiosira weissflogii; mussels fed phytoplankton incorporated seven times more nitrogen than those fed aggregates. However, aggregates could supply an estimated 7 to 14% of the N requirements for both mussels, whereas DOM or particulate detritus could only supply 1 to 3%. These data provide evidence that a food web pathway exists from primary producer to released dissolved organic nitrogen to microbial organic aggregate to metazoan consumer, and, further, that it can be more important in a detrital food web than either particulate detritus or DOM.  相似文献

The speciation of trace metals in surface sediment in Kisumu Carwash area of Winam Gulf, was studied and results compared with those found at Usoma beach which was found to be several orders of magnitude less polluted. High proportions of the metals were bioavailable (fractions 1–6) with BA% ranging from 21.7% (Al) to 94.5% (Pb) at Carwash and 19.6% (Al) to ~100% (for Cd and Pb) at Usoma beach. The readily mobilizable fraction (fractions 1–4) decreased in the order: Pb > Mn > Sn > Cu > Co > Zn > Mg > Cd > Mo > Ni > Cr > Fe > Al at Carwash and Mn > Mo > Sn > Pb > Cd > Mg > Cu > Zn > Co > Ni > Fe > Cr > Al at Usoma beach. The total Zn, Cd, Cr, and Cu sediment concentrations at Carwash were higher than the threshold effect concentrations (TECs), although their bioavailable concentrations were lower than these limits. Both the total and bioavailable concentrations of Pb in surface sediment at Kisumu Carwash area were higher than the TEC threshold limit indicating significant contamination from this heavy metal. Although there was a general good agreement on data obtained by sequential extraction as compared with those obtained by direct aqua-regia digestion, there were large discrepancies for some specific metal analytes which could be accounted for in terms of analytical variations and lack of uniformity in physical and chemical composition of the sediment samples analyzed.  相似文献

Recruitment and population structure of Perna perna in low shore mussel beds were investigated over 15 months at six sites along the south coast of South Africa. Initial, subjective classification of sites as wave exposed or wave sheltered (three of each) was confirmed using the dissolution of cement blocks to measure average water flux and dynamometers for maximum wave force. Recruitment occurred throughout the year, but recruit (1–5 mm) densities were significantly higher from January to April 1996 on both shore types. Recruit densities were positively correlated with adult (>15 mm) densities for both shore types (P < 0.05) but the correlations were extremely weak (r 2 < 0.06 in each case). In areas with 100% cover, adult size (mean and maximum lengths) was greater on exposed sites, but density showed the reverse and was negatively correlated with maximum wave strength (r = −0.84). Despite differences in adult densities and sizes, biomass, which is a product of the two, showed no significant difference between the two shore types (ANOVA P > 0.05). Thus wave exposure dramatically affects density, recruitment and mussel size, but not recruitment timing or biomass where there is 100% cover, and mediates a three-way interaction among food supply, larval supply and intraspecific competition for space. In contrast to shores with saturation recruitment, mussel biomass here appears to be limited by recruit supply and constraints of food, especially on sheltered shores, while density is regulated through intraspecific competition for space primarily on exposed shores and at small spatial scales.  相似文献

Seasonal changes in catch rate, growth and mortality of Nassarius reticulatus from an intertidal lagoon and a wave-exposed beach at Rhosneigr (Anglesey, North Wales, UK) are described. The number of N. reticulatus caught in baited traps from the lagoon was significantly higher (>125 individuals trap−1) during the summer (>18°C), than at <12°C (<65 individuals trap−1), and the numbers caught in the lagoon were an order of magnitude greater than on the beach, >13 individuals trap−1 in July (>16°C), and <5 individuals trap−1 between December and April (<9.5°C). Predictions of shell growth attained by N. reticulatus annually in the lagoon using graphical modal progression analysis (MPA) of length frequency data, were similar to the growth of marked and recaptured lagoon N. reticulatus. Predictions of shell growth using computerised length frequency distribution analysis (LFDA), however, did not reflect the growth as accurately as MPA. Modal progression analysis demonstrated that N. reticulatus from the lagoon achieved a higher asymptotic maximum shell length (L ) and a lower growth constant (K) than animals from the beach. Shell growth was seasonal with growth of the lagoon individuals slowing down towards the end of September and resuming in early April, about a month later than the beach individuals. Mortality of N. reticulatus was greater during the summer, and survival was lower in the lagoon than on the beach. Recruitment patterns were similar in the lagoon and on the beach, and MPA and LFDA predicted that larval N. reticulatus settled between late summer and early autumn, with juveniles (7–8.9 mm) appearing in the population the following year, between February and April. Growth of male and female N. reticulatus in the laboratory was similar and was temperature and size dependent. The different growth patterns between N. reticulatus from the two habitats, predicted using MPA, were maintained when individuals were reared under laboratory conditions for ∼6 months; N. reticulatus <21 mm from the beach grew faster than individuals from the lagoon, although N. reticulatus >21 mm from the lagoon grew faster and attained a larger length (26 mm) than individuals from the beach (24 mm). Low food availability did not affect N. reticulatus survival in the laboratory but significantly suppressed shell growth.  相似文献

Responses of echinoid larvae to food patches of different algal densities   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
High densities of larvae have been found in areas of high primary production, but it remains unclear whether this is the result of hydrodynamics or of larval aggregative behaviour in the presence of food. In this study, we examined changes in the vertical distribution and swimming patterns of four-armed larvae of the sea-urchin Echinometra lucunter (Linnaeus) around food patches of a range of microalgal densities. We reared larvae in the laboratory in a high or low concentration of either single (Isochrysis galbana) or mixed (I. galbana, Dunaliella tertiolecta, Thalassiosira weissflogii) microalgal species. In Plexiglas cylinders, we experimentally constructed haloclines in which the salinity of the bottom water-layer was 33‰ and that of the top water-layer was 24‰. In a thin layer in the middle of the halocline, we inserted a food patch that consisted of 0, 2500, 5000 or 10 000 T. weissflogii cells ml−1. The presence of a food patch had a pronounced effect on the vertical distribution of larvae. This effect depended upon the algal density of the food patch and varied with dietary conditioning. The number of larvae that were above or within the patch decreased with increasing algal density, and was greater if larvae were reared in low-ration or single-species diets than in high-ration or mixed-species diets. Tracking of individual vertical swimming paths showed that within a few minutes, larvae swam into the patches of low algal density, and to positions just below the patches of the two higher algal densities, and remained there until the end of the experimental period. The greater number of algal cells in the digestive tracts of larvae from treatments with a food patch than in those without a patch confirmed that larvae were feeding on the microalgal cells of the patch. To our knowledge, this is the first study to experimentally show an aggregative behavioural response of invertebrate larvae to a food patch. Such a response may reduce the probability of food limitation and therefore enhance larval survival. Received: 14 February 1997 / Accepted: 24 September 1997  相似文献

The relationship between food ingested and NH + 4 excretion rate was investigated for female Calanus pacificus collected in August, 1982, from the San Juan Archipelago, Washington State, USA. The copepods were preconditioned to 6 densities of the diatom Thalassiosira weissflogii (0 to 104 cells ml–1) for 30 h before the experiment. The experiment was conducted with nutrients added in excess to maintain equal rates of NH + 4 uptake by the diatoms at all densities. Although ingestion rates of C. pacificus varied from 0 to over 20% of body N d–1 at the different food levels, excretion was a constant 6.6 nM NH + 4 copepod–1 h–1 or about 10% of body N d–1. This ingestion-excretion relationship, which is consistent with previous respiration and fecundity studies, suggests that the ecological dominance of C. pacificus only under conditions of high food abundance may be due to a dramatic increase in its growth efficiency as ingestion increases above the level supporting a constant metabolic rate. The maintenance of a constant level of metabolism during relatively short periods of low food abundance may be advantageous if it allows the copepod to exploit more effectively short-term variability in its food resulting from environmental heterogeneity or vertical migration.Contribution No. 1360 from the School of Oceanography, University of Washington, Seattle, Washington 98195, USA  相似文献

Egg production and hatching success of the copepod Temora longicornis were measured in laboratory experiments and in the field (North Sea). In the laboratory, ingestion of four algal species (Thalassiosira weissflogii, Phaeocystis globosa, Isochrysis sp. and Dunaliella tertiolecta) was followed and the content of fatty acids in the algae was determined. The two food types (T. weissflogii and Isochrysis sp.) that provided the highest ingestion of carbon and long chain fatty acids also resulted in the highest egg production rate (Er) and hatching success (H%). In contrast, D. tertiolecta led to both low ingestion of carbon and long chain fatty acids, resulting in low reproductive success. There was a positive relationship between the amount of eicosapentaenoic fatty acid [20:5(n-3), EPA] ingested and Er and H%, and of the ratio between docosahexaenoic and eicosapentaenoic fatty acid [22:6(n-3)/20:5(n-3), DHA/EPA] in the ingested food and H%. In the field, chlorophyll a and specific fatty acids were measured and protists were enumerated, in order to investigate the link between these factors and the reproductive success of T. longicornis. Hatching time was found to be related to temperature and exceeded 120 h at 6°C. No relationship was found between chlorophyll a and reproductive success (Er or H%). Er correlated with the concentration of diatoms and ciliates, which were the dominating protists in early spring, indicating that food quantity was the limiting factor for Er. As in the laboratory experiments, H% was dependent on the fatty acid DHA and the ratio of DHA/EPA, which indicates that the quality of eggs (H%) is linked to the quality of food.Communicated by M.
