Ozone-sensitive (NC-S clone) and resistant plants (NC-R clone) of Trifolium repens and Centaurea jacea were exposed to moderate ozone concentrations in ambient air. The aim of this study was the investigation of the relation between ozone-sensitivity and leaf concentrations of antioxidants (ascorbic acid, total phenolics and total antioxidant capacity). NC-R clone showed the highest concentrations of antioxidants with 50-70% more ascorbic acid than NC-S. NC-R had about 5 times more ascorbic acid in the young leaves and 9 times more in the old leaves than Centaurea. In a fumigation experiment with acute ozone stress (100 nl L(-1)) the antioxidant levels changed profoundly. The ozone-injured leaves of NC-S had 6-8 times more total phenolics than uninjured leaves. Generally older leaves had lower antioxidant concentrations and were more prone to ozone injury than younger leaves. Ascorbic acid concentrations were closer related to the appearance of visible ozone injury than the other antioxidative parameters.  相似文献

The expression of defence genes was monitored by RNA blot analyses in tobacco plants (Nicotiana tabacum cv. SR-1) treated with various air pollutants at realistic concentrations that prevail in urban areas. Six-week-old plants responded with an increase in the steady-state mRNA levels of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL), chalcone synthase (CHS), chitinase and beta-1,3-glucanase, when exposed to defined and subnecrotic concentrations of automobile exhaust and/or ozone over a period of 48 h. An enhanced expression of genes encoding mitochondrial and cytosolic superoxide dismutases suggested that air pollutants induced considerable oxidative stress. Moreover, wounding or elicitor treatment of plants already exposed to automobile exhaust and/or ozone additionally increased the expression of the above defence genes, but not so in NO(2). Since the main difference between NO(2) and exhaust gas is the absence of the hydrocarbon compounds in the former, we regard hydrocarbons as favourite candidates for the toxic effect of exhaust gas, and they possibly act by generating an enhanced oxidative stress.  相似文献

In order to probe into the enzymological mechanism for the regulation of lanthanum chloride (LaCl3) on flavonoid synthesis in plants under enhanced ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation, the effects of LaCl3 (20 and 60 mg l?1) on the content of flavonoids as well as the activities of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL), cinnamate-4-hydroxylase (C4H), 4-coumarate?:?coenzyme A ligase (4CL), and chalcone synthase (CHS) in soybean seedlings under enhanced UV-B radiation (2.6 and 6.2 kJ m?2 day?1) were investigated. Enhanced UV-B radiation (2.6 and 6.2 kJ m?2 day?1) caused the increase in the content of flavonoids as well as the activities of PAL, C4H, 4CL, and CHS in soybean seedlings. The treatment of 20 mg l?1 LaCl3 also efficiently increased these indices, which promoted the flavonoid synthesis and provided protective effects for resisting enhanced UV-B radiation. On the contrary, the treatment of 60 mg l?1 LaCl3 decreased the content of flavonoids as well as the activities of C4H, 4CL, and CHS in soybean seedlings except increasing the activity of PAL, which were not beneficial to the flavonoid synthesis and provided negative effects for resisting enhanced UV-B radiation. In conclusion, enhanced UV-B radiation caused the increase in the flavonoid synthesis by promoting the activities of PAL, C4H, 4CL, and CHS in soybean seedlings. The treatment of LaCl3 could change flavonoid synthesis in soybean seedlings under enhanced UV-B radiation by regulating the activities of PAL, C4H, 4CL, and CHS, which is an enzymological mechanism for the regulation of LaCl3 on flavonoid synthesis in plants under enhanced UV-B radiation.  相似文献

A biennial integrated survey, based on the use of vascular plants for the bioindication of the effects of tropospheric ozone together with the use of automatic analysers of ozone, as well as the mapping of lichen biodiversity was performed in the area of Castelfiorentino (Tuscany, central Italy). Photochemically produced ozone proved to be a fundamental presence during the warm season, with maximum hourly means reaching 114 ppb, exceeding the information threshold as fixed by EU: the use of supersensitive tobacco Bel-W3 confirmed the opportunity of carrying out detailed cost-effective monitoring surveys. The potential for didactical and educational implications of this methodology are appealing. Critical levels set up for the protection of vegetation have exceeded considerably. The comparison of biomass productivity in sensitive and resistant individuals (NC-S and NC-R white clover clones, in the framework of an European network) provided evidence that ambient ozone levels are associated with relevant reduction (up to 30%) in the performance of sensitive material; effects on flowering were also pronounced. The economic assessment of such an impact deserves attention. Mapping of epiphytic lichen biodiversity – which has been used to monitor air quality worldwide – was not related to ozone geographical distribution as depicted by tobacco response.  相似文献

From 1993 to 2000, trees, shrubs, forbs and vines were evaluated for symptoms of probable ozone injury in the vicinity of passive ozone samplers or active ozone monitors in forest condition assessment networks in mostly mountainous regions, principally the Carpathian Mountain Range, in the central European countries Czech Republic, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Ukraine. Each country was visited at least twice during the time period. Over the course of eight seasons, 29 species of native plants were identified as potential bioindicators of ozone. This is the first report of probable ozone injury on native plants in central Europe. Forbs and shrubs made up the bulk of the species (21 of 29). Potential bioindicators that are widely distributed include the forbs Centaurea nigra. and Impatiens parviflora and the shrubs Alnus incana, Corylus avellana, and Sambucus racemosa. Ozone concentrations in forcsted areas of central Europe appear to be high enough and of sufficient duration to cause foliar injury on a wide variety of native plants.  相似文献

Two clones of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) differing in ozone tolerance were grown in southern Italy during 1997 and 1998 to study the effects of ambient ozone exposure on yield, leaf morphology and water use. Ambient ozone levels were high in both years with values exceeding the threshold for leaf injury reported in the literature. In both years ozone injury was observed on the sensitive clone (NC-S) but not on the resistant one (NC-R), and leaf and stolon dry matter production was significantly lower in NC-S than in NC-R. However, it cannot be excluded that other factors, such as high temperature, interacted with the effect of ozone on biomass production. The clones differed in morphological characteristics. Lower total leaf area in NC-S plants was due to a smaller number of leaves per plant, but the average area per leaf was higher in NC-S. Specific leaf weight and net assimilation rate were higher in the more productive clone (NC-R). Cumulative plant water use was higher in NC-R in each growth period because of the larger leaf area; by contrast, water use per unit leaf area was higher in NC-S, indicating higher leaf conductance to water vapour. The results suggest that ozone significantly reduces the yield of sensitive white clover plants under well-watered conditions, and that the difference in ozone tolerance between clover clones is related to differences in leaf morphology and water use.  相似文献

The use of the Bel W3 tobacco variety revealed the existence of an intrapopulation variation of sensitivity to the ozone effect leading to the isolation of two categories of plants: sensitive and resistant. The use of sensitive plants revealed the existence of a biological ozone efficiency threshold at a level close to 34.5 ppb. Under the threshold, the biological effects observed were weak or very weak. They can be attributed to the occurrence of secondary phenomena (chemical, physiological, pathological, etc.), inducing or inhibiting necrosis, which become perceptible here.  相似文献

Forty clones of Betula pendula and 6 clones of Betula pubescens, originating from southern and central Finland, were ranked in order of ozone sensitivity according to visible injuries, growth and leaf senescense under low ozone exposure. The plants were fumigated in natural climatic conditions using an open-air exposure system during two growing seasons. Control plants were grown under ambient air, and the elevated-ozone exposures were 1.6x the ambient in 1994 and 1.7x the ambient in 1995. The differences in ozone sensitivity among clones were large. Ozone tolerance was related to thicker leaves and higher stomatal density as compared to sensitive clones. Ultrastructural ozone-induced symptoms were found in chloroplasts of sensitive clones. Increased number of visibly injured leaves on fumigated plants was correlated with reduced leaf formation, foliage area, shoot dry wt and number of stomata, and increased yellowing of leaves. The results suggest that a considerable proportion of birch trees, showing high sensitivity to ozone, are at risk if ambient ozone exposures increase.  相似文献

A single 12 h ozone exposure peaking at 0.20 ppm proved phytotoxic to greenhouse-grown 'Cutler 71' soybeans at each growth stage tested from V5 to R6. Visible injury occurred within 40 h on the unifoliodate leaves and middle-aged and older trifoliolates while the younger leaves were free from toxicity symptoms. In some instances visible injury was accompanied by a decrease in chlorophyll and an increase in leaf diffusive resistance. Although nitrogen fixation was not significantly altered except at early pod formation (R3), and nitrate reductase activity was significantly reduced only if the ozone exposure occurred at the time of maximal enzyme activity (V5), nitrogen content of the leaves was reduced by ozone treatment. Shoot dry weight was not affected 40 h after ozone treatment, but root dry weight was significantly reduced. Plants grown with supplemental NO(3)(-) were more sensitive to ozone than those dependent on fixed nitrogen. At plant maturity, there was no evidence of an ozone effect on shoot, root, or seed dry weight, NO(3)(-) -grown plants showed a significant increase in growth and yield over N(2)(-) plants; but no ozone effect was observed, despite the increased foliar sensitivity. Multiple ozone exposures at growth stages V3, R1 and R3 exacerbated the effects noted with a single episode and also reduced nitrogenase activity (reflected in specific and total nodule activity) and shoot and root dry weight. At plant maturity, there was again no evidence of a significant effect of multiple ozone treatment on shoot dry weight or seed yield although root weight remained low. The results would tend to support the hypothesis that older leaves of soybean do not make a significant contribution to seed yield. Although they may be injured by ozone during the reproductive phases of growth, seed yield may not be affected if the younger O(3)-tolerant leaves remain functional.  相似文献

Foliar applications of ethylenediurea (abbreviated as EDU) were made at 0, 150, 300 or 450 ppm to field-grown rice and wheat in the Yangtze Delta in China. Rice and wheat responded differently to ambient ozone and EDU applications. For wheat, some growth characteristics, such as yield, seed number per plant, seed set rate and harvest index, increased significantly at 300 ppm EDU treatment, while for rice no parameters measured were statistically different regarding EDU application. The reason may be that the wheat cultivar used may be more sensitive to ozone than the rice cultivar. EDU was effective in demonstrating ozone effects on the wheat cultivar, but not on the rice cultivar. Cultivar sensitivity might be an important consideration when assessing the effects of ambient ozone on plants.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to determine the effect of nitrogen nutrition on the response of tobacco to ozone in the atmosphere. With Nicotiana rustica L., a noncommercial tobacco, plants receiving an “optimum” nitrogen supply were found to be more susceptible to ozone injury than those receiving deficient or luxury supplies. Furthermore, it was found on analyses of the third oldest tobacco leaf that, while these “optimum” plants showed little or no increase in respiration as a result of ozone in concentrations too low to produce visible injury, plants grown with deficient or excess nitrogen showed a significant increase in respiration under these same conditions. The increase in respiration was accompanied by a comparable and equally significant decrease in carbohydrate con-lent in the latter plants which was not apparent in plants at the “optimum” nitrogen supply, as well as an increase in total nitrogen, protein-nitrogen, and amino-acid nitrogen. In conclusion, it is suggested that the carbohydrate reserve built up in plants grown with deficient nitrogen nutrition serves as protection against the ozidative potential of ozone. Likewise, a decrease in carbohydrate content below that of “optimum” plants provides protection in plants grown with an overabundance of nitrogen fertilization, though possibly by a more complex mechanism.  相似文献

During 1993-1996 and 2001-2003, we evaluated the percentage of plants (incidence) exhibiting ozone-induced foliar symptoms on vegetation within a National Wildlife Refuge located along the Atlantic Ocean coast of New Jersey, USA. Incidence varied among plant species and years. Bioindicator plants most sensitive to ozone, across all years, included native common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) and wild grape (Vitis spp.), as well as introduced tree-of-heaven (Ailanthus altissima). Less sensitive bioindicators included Virginia creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia) and winged sumac (Rhus coppolina). Black cherry (Prunus serotina) and sassafras (Sassafras albidum) were least sensitive. The greatest incidence of ozone symptoms, across all plant species, occurred in 1996, followed by 2001>1995>1994>1993>2003>2002. A model was developed that showed a statistically significant relationship between incidence of ozone symptoms and the following parameters: plant species, Palmer Drought Severity Index, and the interaction of W126 x N100 measures of ambient ozone.  相似文献

The incidence and severity of visible foliar ozone injury on black cherry (Prunus serotina) seedlings and saplings and tall milkweed (Asclepias exaltata) plants in Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GRSM) were determined by surveys along selected trails conducted during late summer 1992. The incidence (% injured plants) of ozone injury on black cherry was 47% and the percent injured leaves/injured plant and average leaf area injured were 43 and 6%, respectively. Maximum severity (avg. leaf area of the most severely injured leaf) was 12%. Black cherry seedlings and saplings exhibiting ozone injury were taller than non-injured plants. When insect feeding was present, it occurred 96% of the time on plants with ozone injury. Significantly more injury (p=0.007) on black cherry (% injured leaves/injured black cherry) occurred in the NW section of GRSM compared with the other Park sections. Regression analyses showed no relationships in ozone injury with respect to aspect, slope or elevation. Tall milkweed was evaluated twice during August for ozone injury. The incidence (% injured plants) of ozone injury was 74 and 79% for the first and second survey, respectively. The percentage of injured leaves per plant from the first to second survey was 63 to 79%, respectively. Tall milkweeds showing ozone injury were taller than the non-injured plants. The percentage of insect-damaged plants was 50% among plants without ozone injury and 60% among ozone-injured plants. Non-injured tall milkweed had fewer flowers and/or pods than the injured plants. Mean leaf area injured increased over time, and mean maximum leaf area injured increased from 8 to 11% during the same period. Regression analyses showed no differences in ozone injury regarding aspect, slope or elevation. Our findings indicate that ozone injury is widespread throughout the Park on sensitive vegetation.  相似文献

The effect of ozone (6 h, various concentrations from 0 to 350 ppb) on barley (Hordeum vulgare L., cv. Bomi) and tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum L., cv. Yellow Cherry) leaves was investigated in parallel by thermoluminescence (TL) and fluorescence (FL) methods. Several significant changes were found in TL glow curves measured after excitation by one single turnover flash at +2 degree C in the temperature range from 2 to 170 degree C immediately after ozone exposure. Contrary to TL, ozone induced only negligible changes in FL parameters F0, FM and Fv/FM. Measurements done 24 h after ozone exposure showed partial recovery of ozone-induced changes. The extent of recovery was not the same in different parts of TL curves. Fluorescence parameters were not significantly changed. The results demonstrate that TL parameters are more sensitive to ozone than conventially used FL parameters F0, FM and Fv/FM. Moreover, TL measurements seem to give information not only about the PSII electron transport, but also about the extent of oxidative damage and membrane lipid peroxidation. It is concluded, that TL can be a highly informative tool for monitoring the impact of ozone on plants.  相似文献

Ozone is a widely distributed phytotoxic air pollutant and is known to reduce the yield of several important agricultural crops in Spain. However, benomyl has been found to lessen the adverse impact of ozone on plants. We studied the effects of ozone and benomyl on chlorophyll a fluorescence, antioxidant enzymes, and lipid peroxidation in tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. cv. Tiny Tim) grown in open-top chambers in the field. Our results indicate that benomyl prevented the peroxidation of membrane lipids and increased protection of PSII from ozone. There was also a significant reduction in the activity of the antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase in ozone-exposed plants that had not been treated with benomyl. Comparing plants treated with benomyl to untreated plants we found that, on exposure to ozone, a greater fraction of light absorption energy was cycled through the photosynthetic system in benomyl-treated plants, as shown by the higher PSII-mediated electron flow and the higher fraction of open PSII reaction centers. The values analyzed in the fluorescence parameters and lipid peroxidation were similar for plants without benomyl grown in a charcoal-filtered environment and benomyl-treated plants exposed to ozone.  相似文献

Ozone-sensitive and -tolerant individuals of cutleaf coneflower (Rudbeckia laciniata L.) were compared for their gas exchange characteristics and total non-structural carbohydrates at Purchase Knob, a high elevation site in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, USA. Photosynthesis and stomatal conductance decreased with increased foliar stipple. Sensitive plants had lower photosynthetic rates for all leaves, except the very youngest and oldest when compared to tolerant plants. Stomatal conductance decreased with increasing leaf age, but no ozone-sensitivity differences were found. Lower leaves had less starch than upper ones, while leaves on sensitive plants had less than those on tolerant plants. These results show that ambient levels of ozone in Great Smoky Mountains National Park can adversely affect gas exchange, water use efficiency and leaf starch content in sensitive coneflower plants. Persistence of sensitive genotypes in the Park may be due to physiological recovery in low ozone years.  相似文献

EDU or ethylenediurea (N-[2-(2-oxo-1-imidazolidinyl)ethyl]-N'-phenylurea) has been used in experiments to assess ozone effects on vegetation under field conditions because it provides protection against oxidative damage. Tests have mainly been conducted on crop plants, but for woody species only few reports have provided evidence that it can be used in long-term experiments. In this study we tested the technique of stem injection of EDU to study the effects of ozone exposure on Populus nigra cv. Wolterson over one growing season. Cuttings of Populus nigra were grown in pots in the field and between mid-July and early September plants were repeatedly injected with EDU solution (5 mg/plant) or with water at 14-day intervals. Significant differences were found between EDU- and water-injected plants: water-treated plants had more foliar injury, more chlorotic leaves, and shedding of leaves started earlier, suggesting EDU was effective in preventing visible ozone injury and acceleration of senescence. Photosynthetic rates, measured for one leaf age, showed no differences but were mostly higher for the EDU-treated plants. At the end of the growing season diameter increment was 16% higher and there was a non-significant trend for above-ground biomass to be increased by 9% for the EDU-treated plants. This experiment has provided evidence that for this clone serious ozone damage occurs at relatively low concentrations and that EDU can provide protection against visible injury, as well as against longer term growth reductions.  相似文献

Bean plants (Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv Lit) were treated with N-[2-(2-oxo-1-imidazolinidyl)ethyl]-N'-phenylurea (EDU) (150 microg ml(-1)) in hydroponic conditions. The EDU concentration in different plant tissues was measured by HPLC. EDU accumulated in leaves and persisted for more than 10 days showing a slow degradation. Using five different EDU concentrations, a significant relationship between EDU concentration in nutrient solution, ozone tolerance and EDU concentration in leaves was shown. Leaves which contained more EDU were less sensitive to ozone damage. Investigations on protoplasts and cell cultures showed that EDU did not enter the cells. Possible implications of EDU accumulation in the leaf apoplast are discussed.  相似文献

Greenhouse and ambient air experiments have shown ethylene diurea (EDU) to be a strong and specific protective suppressant of ozone injury in plants. To examine how EDU affects plant responses to various ozone (O(3)) levels under controlled field conditions, Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv. Lit was treated with 150 ppm EDU every 14 days and exposed in open-top chambers to charcoal-filtered air (CF), nonfiltered air (NF) or two cf treatments with ozone added. The ozone treatments were proportional additions of one (CF1) and two (CF2) times ambient ozone levels. The mean ozone concentrations in the CF, NF, CF1 and CF2 treatments were 0.98, 14.1, 14.98 and 31.56 nl litre(-1). A two-way split plot ANOVA revealed that shoot dry weight was significantly reduced by ozone. EDU treatment was highly significant for leaf dry weight, root dry weight and shoot dry weight, but not for pod dry weight; leading to a higher biomass of EDU-treated plants. Ozone/EDU interactions were significant for root weight only, indicating that EDU reduced growth suppression by ozone. These results show that EDU action on plant biomass could be interpreted as a delay in senescence since EDU-treated plants showed a significant decreased biomass loss even in the CF treatment.  相似文献
