Mussel samples were collected at 4 to 6 wk intervals throughout 1987 from two hybridMytilus edulis/M. galloprovincialis populations, at Croyde Bay and Whitsand Bay, in southwest England. These were analyzed at two polymorphic loci which are diagnostic for allozyme differences which typifyM. edulis andM. galloprovincialis. Dry mantle weight as a function of shell length was determined for all individuals of each sample. Size-frequency data for the two populations was obtained in September 1987 and March 1988. For all genotypes at both sites, fecundity was a function of shell length, and in both populations the frequency ofM. galloprovincialis alleles was positively correlated with shell length. At both sites, allozyme genotype explained a significant amount of variation in mantle weight either when assessed as a main effect or when assessed as an interaction with shell length or time of collection. At Croyde,M. galloprovincialis mussels had greater estimated fecundity per unit length than theM. edulis mussels. Differences in the timing of spawning activity between theM. edulis and theM. galloprovincialis mussels were inferred, and these differences might act to reduce the amount of interbreeding at Croyde. At Whitsand, a reduced level of variability in the timing of spawning activity and fecundity between the genotypes was observed and explained by a higher degree of genetic mixing. Because theM. galloprovincialis mussels had (1) a greater estimated fecundity at any length, and (2) a greater mean length than theM. edulis mussels, the mean genotypic annual fecundity perM. galloprovincialis mussel was 2.8 times greater than an individualM. edulis mussel at Croyde, and 2.2 times greater than an individualM. edulis mussel at Whitsand. This evidence thatM. galloprovincialis mussels have an advantage in fecundity, and thus perhaps in fertility, taken together with the evidence thatM. galloprovincialis also has a higher viability, indicates directional selection in favour of theM. galloprovincialis phenotype. Because of the observed temporal stability of the population it seems likely that this selection is counterbalanced by a massive imigration ofM. edulis spat from neighbouring populations.  相似文献

The mussels Mytilus edulis L. and M. trossulus Gould are found sympatrically in most areas of Newfoundland, with a low frequency of hybrids. To assess the potential for reproductive isolation, we sampled mussels from three sites in an eastern Newfoundland Bay from May–October 1996 to determine if there were differences in the reproductive cycles of the two species and their natural hybrids. In mussels with sheil lengths of 38–42 mm, males and females with mature gametes were dominant in June for M. edulis and hybrids, while M. trossulus showed a lower frequency of individuals with mature gametes. M. trossulus and hybrids spawned over a prolonged period (from late spring to early autumn) compared with most M. edulis individuals that spawned over a period of 2–3 weeks in July. This asynchrony in spawning activity between the two species may partially explain the low frequency of hybrids found in previous studies of these mussel populations. Female and male hybrids between M. edulis and M. trossulus showed normal gonad development, ripening and spawning, providing an opportunity for the introgression of genes between the two species. M. trossulus had a higher reproductive output than M. edulis of similar shell length, while hybrids showed intermediate values of reproductive output. M. trossulus females produced smaller eggs than either M. edulis or hybrids. Differences in reproductive traits may partially explain the maintenance of the mussel hybrid zone in Newfoundland. Rocky intertidal habitats often exhibit high levels of environmental heterogeneity, and the ability of organisms to move between microhabitats is likely to have a profound influence on their rates of mortality and overall fitness. Mussels within the Mytilus edulis complex are morphologically very similar, yet at sites where these species hybridize in southwest England, populations repeatedly show evidence of selection against individuals with alleles specific to M. edulis Linnaeus, in favor of those with alleles specific to M. galloprovincialis Lamarck. Differential movement rates of these two species were examined within simulated mussel beds (gravel substrate) in the winter (February) and summer (July) of 2001. M. edulis-like mussels moved more frequently and more quickly to the exterior of gravel beds than did M. galloprovincialis-like mussels. Coupled with measurements of attachment strength in the field conducted in July 2001, we used a wave force model to examine the probability of dislodgement for each species under a range of water velocities. Results suggest that by preferentially moving to the exterior of beds, M. edulis experiences higher dislodgement rates due to exposure to large hydrodynamic forces than do M. galloprovincialis. As a consequence of lower attachment strengths, M. edulis is also predicted to have higher mortality rates than M. galloprovincialis in interior portions of the bed. Thus, differential movement behavior may contribute to the differential genotype-specific mortality rates observed in the Mytilus spp. hybrid zone in southwest England, and is an example of behavior potentially modifying rates of exogenous selection in an intertidal hybrid zone.Communicated by J.P. A strong clinal change in salinity occurs between the Baltic Sea and the North Sea, Atlantic Ocean, in the Danish Straits, where hybridization zone between mussels Mytilus edulis and M. trossulus has been reported. Eleven samples of mussels were studied from the Danish Straits and the inner Baltic Sea. Extensive introgression of M. edulis alleles from the North Sea into populations throughout the Baltic was ascertained for mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and two nuclear markers (ME15–16 and ITS). In the opposite direction, introgression of M. trossulus alleles into the M. edulis background was observed at the EFbis nuclear marker in populations from Kattegat (Danish Straits). While only M. edulis F (female) mtDNA was present in the Baltic, there were still strong differences in frequencies in the control region length variants between the Danish Straits and the inner Baltic samples, and weaker variation in coding region ND2–COIII haplotype frequencies. In the assays of the two mtDNA regions, various patterns of heteroplasmy were detected in 32% of all the studied individual mussels; this includes the presence of distinct, independently inherited M and F mitochondria in males, as well as the presence of two different distinguishable F genomes. The male-inherited M mtDNA genomes are quite common in the mussels from the Danish Straits, but very rare in males from the inner Baltic. Instead, a recombined control region variant (1r), which seems to have taken over the role of the M genome, was present in a number of specimens in the Baltic. Observations of heteroplasmy for two F genomes in some females and males confirm disruptions of the doubly uniparental inheritance mechanism in the hybrid Baltic Mytilus.  相似文献

Microprofiles of oxygen in epiphyte communities on submerged macrophytes   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Mussels (Mytilus edulis) transferred in net bags from clean to chronically mercury polluted water readily accumulated mercury during an exposure period of three months. Growth of the transplanted mussels had a diluting effect on the mercury concentration, but the absolute weight of mercury uptake increased throughout the entire period, though there was a tendency for decreased efficiency of the removal of mercury per liter of water filtered by the mussels. Mussels were also translocated from polluted to clean (laboratory) water to depurate mercury. The biological half-lives of mercury was 293 d for M. edulis from the chronically polluted area in contrast to only 53 d for mussels from a temporary massive mercury polluted area near a chemical deposit. In both cases about 75% of the total mercury in the mussels was inorganic, and it is suggested that both inorganic and organic mercury species were immobilized in mussels from the long-term mercury polluted area, whereas the immobilization capacity was exceeded in the short-term mercury exposed mussels near the chemical deposit. Very slow elimination of mercury was observed in the deposit-feeding bivalve Macoma balthica from the chronically polluted area, and about 6% of the total mercury was methyl-+phenyl-mercury. This is more than three times lower than found in M. edulis from the same collecting site. A pronounced difference in the mercury speciation (i.e., total mercury, total organic mercury, methyl-mercury and phenyl-mercury) in M. edulis from the two mercury polluted areas is thought to reflect the different character of the mercury pollution in the two areas.  相似文献

Mytilus edulis collected from Tomales Bay, California, USA, during mid-winter 1979 were exposed to increased concentrations of dissolved copper under controlled laboratory conditions. A dose-dependent reduction in the latency of lysosomal hexosaminidase activity in digestive cells was induced after a 30 d exposure to copper. The half-time of the hexosaminidase staining reaction in sections of digestive gland from control mussels was 15.5 min; for mussels exposed to 25, 50, and 75 g Cu l-1 it was 11.8, 8.5 and 5.5 min, respectively. In addition, the dyecoupled reaction product was seen earlier in sections from individuals exposed to 50 and 75 g Cu l-1 (after 30 s) and 25 g Cu l-1 (1 min) than in sections from control individuals (2.5 min). Copper accumulations were demonstrated histochemically to have the same distribution as the hexosaminidase reaction product, indicating that copper is sequestered in lysosomes. Copper concentrations in digestive gland tissue, were related to the concentrations of copper in the water to which the mussels were exposed.  相似文献

In Ireland, mussels on exposed rocky shores constitute an interbreeding mixture of two forms of mussels, the blue mussel, Mytilus edulis, and the Mediterranean mussel, M. galloprovincialis. Results from an Irish study in the 1980s, using partially diagnostic allozyme markers, indicated that mussels higher up the shore were more galloprovincialis-like than those lower down. In this study we set out to test two hypotheses: (a) recruits arriving on the shore are composed of genetically distinct cohorts that settle preferentially at different levels on the shore, and maintain genetic distinctiveness into adulthood; (b) recruits are genetically homogeneous, but once settled they diverge genetically over time, due to within-habitat site specific-selection. The diagnostic Me 15/16 DNA marker was used to analyse the genetic composition of newly-settled spat recruiting to artificial substrates, which were placed at two-week intervals from May–October 2002, on the mid- and low shore areas of two exposed sites in Galway Bay. Adult mussels were also collected on each sampling date. Results did not support the preferential settlement hypothesis, i.e., the genetic composition of primary settlers (≤ 500 μm) was similar between tidal heights and shores. Neither was there evidence of post settlement selective mortality, as adults were genetically similar to settling spat. In spat and adults the frequency of the M. galloprovincialis allele was high (0.56–0.80), due to high frequencies of M. galloprovincialis (> 37%) and hybrid (> 33%) genotypes, and correspondingly low frequencies of the M. edulis genotype (< 11%). Adult mussels from a nearby sheltered estuarine site, while significantly different to exposed shore mussels, still had low frequencies of the M. edulis genotype (< 17%), indicating no apparent advantage for the genotype in this environment. There are indications that the genetic composition of mussels may be changing on the Atlantic coasts of Ireland.  相似文献

Effect of environmental factors on byssal thread formation   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The effects of various factors on byssal thread formation have been examined in the laboratory using Modiolus demissus and Mytilus edulis. With M. demissus thread formation (threads/mussel/h0 and proportion of mussels forming threads decreased with increasing size; prior exposure to air enhanced subsequent thread formation; mechanical agitation reduced thread formation. In addition, low salinity acclimated mussels adapted more rapidly to 32 ppt than high salinity acclimated mussels did to 16 ppt; threads were not formed in the absence of calcium and/or magnesium; and there was no reduction in thread formation at temperatures as high as 27° to 28°C. M. edulis died and thread formation approached zero at temperatures exceeding 26°C.  相似文献

The acute (1) and long-term (2) toxic effects of N-nitrosodipropylamine (NDPA) and N-methylnitrosurea (NMU) were studied by light and electronmicroscopy following injection of the chemicals into the foot of the mussels Mytilus edulis (L.) (1) Mussels reveived one injection of NDPA at concentrations of 0.25, 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 mg NDPA mussel-1, and one injection of NMU at concentrations of 0.25, 0.5, 1.0, and 4.0 mg NMU mussel-1. Within 12d, necrosis of the epithelial lining of the digestive diverticula took place, and the vesicular connective tissue in the digestive diverticula were heavily infiltrated by eosinophilic granular leucocytes. (2) Mussels received four weekly injections of 0.5 mg NDPA mussel-1, and 0.5 mg NMU mussel-1. NDPA-exposed mussels were examined for a period of 17 weeks, and NMU-exposed mussels were examined for a period of 24 weeks. Both chemicals produced progressive tissue damage, characterized by destruction of digestive tubules and ducts in the digestive diverticula. Destroyed tubules and ducts were replaced by collagenous scars, and granulocytomas were frequently seen.  相似文献

As a result of 210Po's previously identified association with sulphur-rich proteins, metallothioneins could have a significant effect on the behaviour and fate of 210Po in molluscs. Starved control and cadmium-exposed mussels, Mytilus edulis, were fed 210Po-labelled algae (Isochrysis galbana) for 5 d and then allowed to depurate in clean sea water. Cadmium-exposed M. edulis accumulated less 210Po in the digestive gland and the remainder of the tissue than control mussels, although this was due to a decrease in tissue weight. More than 40% of 210Po was identified as being associated with high molecular weight and heat-treated cytosol proteins in M. edulis. Mussels in a starved state are known to recycle as much as 90% of their amino acids. It is proposed that 210Po associated with these and other proteins is recycled, explaining why no significant loss of 210Po was observed from the remainder of the tissue in either control or Cd-exposed mussels. Cadmium-induced metallothioneins had no effect on the distribution of 210Po in M. edulis; <5% associated with the cytosolic fraction was considered to principally contain metallothioneins. It is suggested that 210Po's apparent relationship with metallothioneins is coincidental rather than connected with its role in the regulation of metals.

Both the tolerance of air exposure and the metabolic means by which mussles,Mytilus edulis, face air exposure can be modified by intertidal acclimatization. Short-term intertidal acclimatization enhanced the tolerance of air exposure most in early summer. Prevention of air breathing increased the mortality of wild and non-acclimatized cultured (i.e., control) mussels, but only slightly enhanced that of intertidally acclimatized mussels, suggesting their increased dependence upon anaerobic metabolism. In June, anaerobic end products accumulated in the adductor muscle of cultured but not of wild mussels. Intertidal acclimatization shifted the pattern and rates of metabolite accumulation. Control mussels accumulated succinate and alanine in the adductor muscle while intertidally acclimatized mussels accumulated strombine + alanopine, albeit at far lower levels. Pyruvate kinase (PK) from adductor muscle of intertidally acclimatized mussels was gradually activated during prolonged air exposure, while that of control and wild mussels was more inhibited. In July and August, during prolonged air exposure, the PK from the most viable mussles generally was the most inhibited. Prevention of air breathing did not markedly change the time course of PK inhibition during air exposure. Cultured mussels used in the present study were obtained from growers in Québec, and wild mussels were collected from the Baie des Chaleurs (Québec, PQ) in 1988.  相似文献

Many marine species, including mussels in the Mytilus edulis species group (i.e. M. edulis L., M. galloprovincialis Lamarck, and M. trossulus Gould), have an antitropical distribution pattern, with closely related taxa occurring in high latitudes of the northern and southern hemispheres but being absent from the tropics. We tested four hypotheses to explain the timing and route of transequatorial migration by species with antitropical distributions. These hypotheses yield different predictions for the phylogenetic relationship of southern hemisphere taxa relative to their northern counter-parts. The three Mytilus species were used to test these hypotheses since they exhibit a typical antitropical distribution and representative taxa occur in both the Pacific and Atlantic. Two types of mtDNA lineages were found among populations of mussels collected from the southern hemisphere between 1988 and 1996; over 90% of the mtDNA lineages formed a distinct subclade which, on average, had 1.4% divergence from haplotypes found exclusively in northern Atlantic populations of M. galloprovincialis. These data indicate that southern hemisphere mussels arose from a migration event from the northern hemisphere during the Pleistocene via an Atlantic route. The remainder of the southern hemisphere lineages (<10%) were very closely related to mtDNA haplotypes found in both M. edulis and M. galloprovincialis in the northern hemisphere, suggesting a second, more recent migration to the southern hemisphere. There was no evidence that southern hemisphere mussels arose from Pacific populations of mussels. Received: 8 December 1998 / Accepted: 8 November 1999  相似文献

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and allozyme variation were analysed in samples of mussels collected in 1984 and 1985 from four localities in South West England and one locality in South Wales, a region of Britain where the common mussel (Mytilus edulis) occurs sympatrically and hybridises with the Mediterranean mussel (M. galloprovincialis). Significant differences in mtDNA genotype frequencies for three restriction enzymes (BstEII, XbaI, and EcoRI) were observed between mussels from M. galloprovincialis populations (Padstow and Bude) and those from an M. edulis population (Swansea). Some mtDNA genotypes at high-frequency in M. galloprovincialis were not observed in M. edulis, although there was no indication that mtDNA variation provides greater overall diagnostic power than allozyme variation in distinguishing between the two forms of mussel. Construction of a phylogenetic tree of multiple mtDNA genotypes revealed small mutational distances between the genotypes characterising M. edulis and M. galloprovincialis. The results were consistent with predominant mtDNA flow from M. edulis to M. galloprovincialis. This can be explained by the dispersal of larvae to South West England from M. edulis regions to the north and east, but little dispersal in the opposite directions. Samples from two hybrid populations (Whitsand and Croyde) were analysed. mtDNA genotype frequencies at Croyde were in line with predictions made on the basis of two partially diagnostic allozyme loci (Est-D and Odh), mtDNA frequencies at Whitsand were not. Frequencies of some mtDNA genotypes at Whitsand were characteristic of M. edulis, others of M. galloprovincialis. Differential selective mortality or flow of different mtDNA genotypes and allozyme variation are proposed as possible causes of these results.  相似文献

To test the effect of petroleum hydrocarbons on predation by the seastar Evasterias troschelii (Stimpson, 1862) on the mussel Mytilus edulis (L.), we exposed the predator with the prey to six concentrations of the water-soluble fraction (WSF) of Cook Inlet crude oil. Seastars and mussels were collected at Auke Bay, Alaska, in November 1980. During a 28 d exposure in a flow-through system, seastars were more sensitive to the WSF than mussels: the LC50 for the seastars was 0.82 ppm at Day 19 and, although no mussels were exposed to WSF for more than 12 d, none died. Daily feeding rates (whether in terms of number of mussels seastar-1 d-1 or dry weight of mussels seastar-1 d-1) were significantly reduced at all concentrations above 0.12 ppm. At 0.20, 0.28 and 0.72 ppm WSF, daily feeding rates (in terms of dry weight of mussels) were, respectively, 53, 37, and 5% of the control rate; at the two highest concentrations (0.97 and 1.31 ppm WSF), the seastars did not feed. Seastars at concentrations greater than 0.12 ppm WSF grew slower than individuals from the control group and the 0.12 ppm-treatment group combined. These laboratory results show that E. troschelii is more sensitive to chronic low levels of the WSF of crude oil. The possibility that such oil pollution could reduce predation and permit M. edulis to monopolize the low intertidal zone of southern Alaska remains to be studied.  相似文献

Sequential alternation of extracellular digestion in the stomach and intracellular digestion in the diverticula appears widespread among bivalves. The present study documents some physiological consequences of such processes in Mytilus edulis L. collected during 1981 from Whitsand Bay, Cornwall, England. Pronounced temporal fluctuations in faecal deposition are described that relate, in terms of amplitude and period, to both sinusoidal rhythmicity established for ammonia excretion and changes in the morphology of digestive tubules. Although at least partially synchronised among replicate groups of mussels, these cycles bore no consistent relationship with exogenous influences. Hourly fluctuation in the net absorption efficiency for nitrogen, as evidenced by the mean percentage ±2 SE, measured over 24 h sampling periods, was considerable (16.0±53.7, 49.3±10.9 and 52.8±6.6 for mussels acclimated in March, June and October, respectively). This variation in absorption derived from an inverse relationship between the percentage nitrogen within faeces and the rate of faecal egestion. Accordingly, peaks of faecal deposition presumably represented the pulsed remnants of intracellular digestion. Co-ordinated rhythms of digestion, absorption and excretion were thus evident in M. edulis. These processes displayed seasonally dependent periodicities of approximately 8, 3 and 4 h in March, June and October, respectively. It was concluded that, at least for M. edulis, this previously unquantified rhythmicity of physiological processes warrants careful consideration during assays commonly undertaken in the complication of nutrient and energy budgets.  相似文献

Ingestion of bivalve larvae by Mytilus edulis was investigated. Laboratory experiments revealed that ~ 90% of bivalve larvae offered to mussels was ingested and apparently fully digested. The shell of the bivalve larvae offered no protection against digestive processes, resulting in high larval mortality once inside the stomach. Stomach content analysis (September 2001–January 2003) showed that bivalve larvae were ingested by farmed mussels year-round, with the exception of March 2002. Numbers of ingested larvae were highest in October 2001 and May 2002, which coincides with known spawning times of farmed mussels in Ireland. Mussels ingested a large size-range of bivalve larvae, suggesting that all stages of the bivalve life cycle are vulnerable to predation. It is suggested that adult bivalves routinely filter larvae from the surrounding water and that, given the high biomass of mussels present in mussel farms, filtration by adult bivalves significantly reduces numbers of bivalve larvae in nearby waters.Communicated by J.P. Metallothionein induction inMytilus edulis exposed to cadmium   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The exposure of mussels,Mytilus edulis, collected from Whitsand Bay, southwest England, in August 1988, to sublethal concentrations of cadmium (400µg l–1) for 65 d resulted in the induction of metallothionein (MT) synthesis in the soft tissues. In cadmium-exposed mussels, metallothionein concentrations, measured by differential pulse polarography, increased by a factor of three, from 2 to 3 mg g–1 to a maximum of 9 mg g–1 after 30 d. No significant changes could be detected in controls. Cadmium accumulated in the soft tissues of mussels correlated significantly with metallothionein concentrations and can be described by the relationship: MT (mg g–1)=0.045 Cd (µg g–1)+3.03 (r=0.803,P<0.001). Gel chromatography of heat-treated cytosolic extracts showed that the accumulated cadmium is bound principally to the newly formed metallothioneins. Copper and zinc were also analysed in the whole soft-tissues and in subcellular fractions of cadmium-exposed mussels. Although copper concentrations were not affected by cadmium-exposure, zinc levels were significantly reduced. The results demonstrate that the induction of metallothioneins inM. edulis is a quantifiable biological response to sublethal levels of cadmium exposure.  相似文献

Experiments were designed to expose blue mussels (Mytilus edulis) to contaminated sediment collected from Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, USA in 1982. Measurements were taken to allow comparisons of the uptake and depuration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). In addition, concentration factors in the mussels were calculated separately against the dissolved and particulate phase concentrations and the results from the exposure and control systems were compared. Both PAHs and PCBs were rapidly accumulated by the mussels exposed to the contaminated sediment. After the mussels were transferred to control seawater, individual PAHs were depurated with half-lives ranging from 12 to 30 d. Individual PCBs showed depuration half-lives which ranged from 16 to 46 d. Concentration factors in the mussels calculated against the particulate phase concentrations were very different in the exposure and control systems. Concentration factors calculated using only the dissolved phase concentrations (bioconcentration factors) showed excellent agreement in the two systems, possibly an indication that the dissolved phase was the direct source of the contaminants accumulated by the mussels. The bioconcentration factors for PCBs were higher than those of PAHs when compounds with similar n-octanol/water partition coefficients were compared.  相似文献

We experimented with caging the Mediterranean mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis) at various depths for 69 d to measure basic physiological parameters, histological response and bio-accumulation of contaminants in a deep-sea contaminated area. In preliminary experiments, we demonstrated, under artificial pressure conditions, the ability of mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis to tolerate rapid immersion (at a speed of up to 120 m min?1). In situ experiments were performed using submerged lines enabling mussels to be maintained at depths ranging of 40–1550 m with survival rates ranging from 80 to 38%, respectively. No significant differences in condition indexes were observed between treated and control specimens. However, histological observations demonstrated a clear reduction in thickness of the digestive epithelium with increasing depth exposure. By determining the contaminants in caged mussels, we found the following values for chromium accumulation: 27.4 μg g?1 dry weight at 580 m depth and 9.8 μg g?1 dry weight at 1550 m. Selected stations were located downstream of an industrial effluent at 420 m. The biological and environmental consequences of deep-sea contamination demonstrate the suitability of caged mussels for monitoring contaminant accumulation.  相似文献
