The morphometry of the sea urchin Evechinus chloroticus from habitats of contrasting algal abundance but of similar urchin density was examined at two localities in southern New Zealand during 1993. Populations from habitats of high algal abundance (Dusky Sound) had similar relationships of demipyramid (jaws) to test diameter, but individuals had significantly smaller jaws relative to their test diameter than those from a locality where algal abundance was low (Arapawa Island). The body wall mass (in relation to total wet weight) was similar for populations from both localities but, for Dusky Sound populations, individuals from exposed sites had greater relative body mass than those from sheltered sites. The ratios of gonad weight:total weight were similar between localities. However, E. chloroticus from Arapawa Island reached reproductive maturity at a smaller size than those from Dusky Sound. Growth rates of E. chloroticus varied among localities in Dusky Sound. Growth was modelled by the Tanaka function, which allows for rapid early growth until reproductive maturity is reached and declining growth rates thereafter. The results show that sea urchins respond to low resource availability by increasing the size of the food-gathering apparatus, maturing at a smaller size, and growing to a smaller size than individuals from food-rich habitats. Individuals of Mytilus edulis of the same age (ca 2 months) were collected as spat from natural populations. Relative growth rates were determined among individuals differing in heterozygosity at five enzyme loci. Growth rate was positively correlated with individual heterozygosity and each of the five loci contributed about equally to the relatinship. More heterozygous individuals also achieved more uniform average growth rates. Although there was a deficiency of heterozygotes at each locus, relative to Hardy-Weinberg expectations, the magnitude of the deficiency, measured as FIS, was less among faster growing mussels. Our results conform closely with those of Zouros et al. (1980) on the American oyster. We conclude that the relationship between multiple locus heterozygosity and growth rate is one that is general to a diversity of outbreeding plant and animal populations. Other studies indicate that this relationship is due to a greater average metabolic efficiency of more heterozygous individuals. This relationship does not emerge from experimental designs in which there has been limited genetic sampling of the natural genetic variation.  相似文献

Identifying reproductive stocks in commercial species is relevant to fishery management strategies. We obtained muscle samples of California spiny lobster (Panulirus interruptus) from six localities along the west coast of the Baja California Peninsula and analyzed the genetic structure using mtDNA RFLPs. Our results indicated that all localities shared the same major haplotypes and showed a spatial homogeneity in the distribution of haplotype frequencies. An analysis of molecular variance indicated that only 0.84% of the genetic variability was explained by differences among localities and was not significantly different from zero. Weak divergences were found between Bahía Magdalena, the most southerly locality, in relation to other populations. Major oceanographic processes along this coast, combined with a long larval period that supports passive transport among localities, are suggested to explain the results.  相似文献

Various studies indicate that cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) act as cues for nestmate recognition in paper wasps and other social insects. A recent study showed that associative nest foundation in Polistes dominulus is mainly performed by foundresses coming from the same locality. In the present study, we induced future foundresses of P. dominulus collected in two different localities to hibernate in the laboratory in aggregates of individuals from the same or different localities. After 2 months of hibernation, foundresses from different localities but from the same experimental cluster did not show any preference to associate, at the time of nest foundation, with individuals coming from the same original locality. The cuticular chemical profiles of individuals from the mixed hibernation clusters were quite similar and significantly different from those of individuals which hibernated with other foundresses from the same locality. These findings suggest that, in this species, mechanisms other than nestmate chemical recognition play a major role in the spring association of gynes during the foundation of a new nest.Communicated by R.F.A. Gene-enzyme variation was studied electrophoretically within and between barnacle populations of the genus Chthamalus from 8 intertidal stations from central California to the Pacific coast of Panamá. Horizontal starch-gel electrophoresis separated and resolved 18 enzymes from 512 individual barnacles. A maximum of 25 gene-enzyme systems was interpretable from the resulting zymograms. Electrophoretic phenotypes and patterns of phenotypic variation generally conformed with those observed in other organisms. The amount of genetic variation within barnacle populations varied; average heterozygosity, for example, ranged from a low of 3.4% in a Mexican population of the C. fissus group to a high of 10.4% in C. anisopoma from the Gulf of California. Observed and expected average heterozygosities agreed in all population samples, indicating that these species are outbreeding. In contrast to the prediction stemming from a hypothesis that trophic stability regulates the amount of genetic variation in marine species, average heterozygosity tends to be positively correlated with latitude. Data from these and other barnacle species may support a hybrid environmental heterogeneity-trophic diversity model recently proposed to explain genetic variation in decapod crustaceans. Juxtaposition of individuals from different localities revealed numerous genetic differences among populations of the C. fissus group. At least three partially sympatric sibling species are separated by genetic distances as large as those observed between the C. fissus group and the distinct species C. dalli and C. anisopoma. A cladistic analysis places C. anisopoma close to the Mexican and Panamanian sibling species, with C. fissus from San Diego and C. dalli successively farther removed.  相似文献

Allelic variation at eight nuclear-encoded microsatellites was assayed among 967 red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) sampled from four consecutive cohorts at seven geographic localities (=28 samples total) in the northern Gulf of Mexico (Gulf). Number of alleles per microsatellite ranged from 6 to 21; average direct-count heterozygosity values per sample (-SE) ranged from 0.560ǂ.018 to 0.903ǂ.009. Tests of Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium revealed significant departures from expected genotype proportions at one microsatellite, which was omitted from further analysis. Tests of genotypic equilibrium indicated that genotypes between pairs of microsatellites were randomly associated. Homogeneity tests of allele distributions across cohorts within localities were non-significant following correction for multiple tests executed simultaneously, and results from molecular analysis of variance indicated that the genetic variance component attributable to variation among cohorts did not differ significantly from zero. Homogeneity tests of allele distributions among localities (cohorts pooled) revealed significant differences both before and after correction for multiple tests. Neighbor-joining clustering of a pairwise matrix of Š values (an unbiased estimator of FST), spatial autocorrelations, and regression analysis revealed a pattern of isolation by distance, where genetic divergence among geographic samples increases with geographic distance between sample localities. The pattern and degree of temporal and spatial divergence in the nuclear-encoded microsatellites paralleled almost exactly those of mitochondrial (mt) DNA, as determined in a prior study. Stability of both microsatellite and mtDNA allele distributions within localities indicates that the small but significant genetic divergence among geographic samples represents true signal and that overlapping populations of red drum in the northern Gulf may be influenced by independent population dynamics. The degree of genetic divergence in microsatellites and mtDNA is virtually identical, indicating that genetic effective size of microsatellites and mtDNA in red drum are the same. This, in turn, suggests either that gene flow in red drum in the northern Gulf could be biased sexually or that red drum populations may not be in equilibrium between genetic drift and migration. If a sexual bias exists, the observation that divergence in mtDNA is considerably less than 4 times that of microsatellites could suggest female-mediated dispersal and/or male philopatry. The observed isolation-by-distance effect indicates a practical limit to dispersal. Approximate estimates of geographic neighborhood size suggest the limit is in the range 700-900 km. Although the genetic studies of red drum indicate significant genetic divergence across the northern Gulf, the genetic differences do not delimit specific populations or stocks with fixed geographic boundaries.  相似文献

A short term study was made on the ecology and the net productivity of sublittoral populations of benthic macrophytes in, and near, the Ria de Aldan on the Atlantic coast of Spain. A preliminary survery was made using SCUBA diving techniques and this revealed that the most extensive sublittoral communities were those dominated by Laminaria ochroleuca and/or Saccorhiza polyschides. The effect of depth and the amount and type of water movement on the distribution and productivity of these two populations was studied at 7 localities. There was found to be a narrow zone of transition between the two populations and the depth of this zone was governed by the amount of water movement. The factors which might control the dynamic equilibrium between these two populations are discussed. The total standing crop and productivity per unit area was found to undergo a decrease with both an increase in depth and wave action whilst the highest values of all were in two localities where there was considerable current surge. The maximum productivity of L. ochroleuca (17 metric tons/hectare/annum) was found in the most sheltered locality studied, whilst the highest value for S. polyschides (39 metric tons/hectare/annum) was found where the current surge was greatest but wave action was only moderate. This maximum value for S. polyschides is the highest yet reported for naturally occurring beds of submerged seaweeds. Figures for the net efficiency of energy fixation are presented and discussed.  相似文献

Genetic differentiation and genetic variability of sporophytic and gametophytic populations of Gelidium arbuscula (Bory) from three localities sampled in 1989 and 1990 in the Canary Islands (Spain) were examined by isozyme electrophoresis. Twenty-three to 29 putative alleles corresponding to 22 gene loci, were compared. High deviations in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, and significant differences between allelic frequencies of sporophytic and gametophytic subpopulations at the same locality were found, suggesting a predominant asexual reproduction of G. arbuscula. The genetic variability (percentage of polymorphic loci, mean number of alleles per locus and average gene diversity) of haploid subpopulations was lower than that of diploid subpopulations at all three localities, being the lowest described for seaweeds. No correlation between genetic and geographical distance was found. The high genetic differentiation coefficient between all subpopulations suggests a very reduced genetic flow between subpopulations of the same and of different localities. These results suggest that the genetic structure of the populations of G. arbuscula from the Canary Islands is due to a founder-effect combined with a predominance of asexual reproduction. This is the first report comparing allelic frequencies between sporophytic and gametophytic subpopulations of seaweeds.  相似文献

Genetic variability within the Cuban population of the white shrimp Litopenaeus schmitti (Burkenroad, 1936) was assessed using five microsatellite loci and samples collected from four sites (Batabanó, Cienfuegos, Tunas de Zaza, and Manzanillo) from November 1999 to March 2000. All loci were polymorphic, and a total of 80 alleles were found, 13 of them private alleles occurring only in a single population and always in low frequencies. The Cienfuegos sample had the highest observed heterozygosity (Ho=0.653), and the Tunas de Zaza sample had the lowest values (Ho=0.605), but there were no significant differences among samples in heterozygosity or in the mean numbers of alleles per locus (ranging from 11.0 to 11.6). Significant differentiation among populations was detected (FST=0.012, P<0.001). Low but significant FST values were revealed in pairwise comparisons between populations. Assignation tests correctly assigned high percentages of individuals to their original populations (74.5%) using a Bayesian approach. The significant differentiation among populations could be due to the restriction of gene flow among populations of L. schmitti and is concordant with previous allozyme studies on Cuban populations.Communicated by J.P. Rabbit antisera were raised against Cardium edule (L.) from the Waddensea locality, Skallingen, against Cardium lamarcki (Reeve) from the Danish locality, Dybsø Fjord, and against Cardium glaucum (Bruguière) from the French Mediterranean coast at Ile des Embiez. Allopatric and sympatric populations of C. lamarcki and C. edule from Swedish and Danish localities, and allopatric populations of C. glaucum from the Mediterranean Sea, Red Sea and Black Sea were studied by means of the described method and by starch gel electrophoresis of malate dehydrogenase (MDH). By means of crossed immuno-electrophoresis, using intermediary gels containing antibodies against one of the Cardium types and receiver gels containing antibodies against one of the others, type-specific and type-non-specific reactions were recorded. The results are compared with a similar investigation of Mytilus edulis, M. galloprovincialis and M. californianus. Based on immunological properties, it is shown that C. edule is a valid species different from the C. lamarcki/C. glaucum complex. It is further suggested that C. lamarcki and C. glaucum should still be referred to by these two names as significant genetic differences between them is revealed by this immunological study.  相似文献

Variation in mitochondrial (mt)DNA was examined among 473 red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) sampled in 1988 and 1989 from nearshore localities in the northern Gulf of Mexico (Gulf) and the Atlantic coast of the southeastern United States (Atlantic). Data were combined with those from a previous study to generate a total of 871 individuals sampled from 11 localities in the Gulf and 5 localities in the Atlantic. Individuals assayed were from the 1986 and 1987 year-classes. A total of 118 composite mtDNA genotypes (haplotypes) was found. The percentage nucleotide sequence divergence among the 118 haplotypes ranged from 0.184 to 1.913, with a mean (±SE) of 0.878±0.004. MtDNA nucleon diversities and intrapopulational nucleotide-sequence divergence values were similar over all Gulf and Atlantic localities, and were high relative to most fish species surveyed to date. These data indicate that the perceived decline in red drum abundance appears not to have affected the genetic variability base of the species. Significant heterogeneity in the frequencies of at least four haplotypes was detected between pooled samples from the Gulf vs pooled samples from the Atlantic. No heterogeneity was found among localities from the Gulf or localities from the Atlantic. High levels of gene flow among all localities were inferred from F ST values (a measure of the variance in mtDNA haplotype frequencies) and from Slatkin's qualitative and quantitative analyses. Parsimony and phenetic analyses revealed no strong evidence for phylogeographic cohesion of localities, although there was weak support for cohesion of four of five localities from the Atlantic. These data indicate that the red drum population is subdivided, with weakly differentiated subpopulations (stocks) occurring in the northern Gulf and along the Atlantic coast of southeastern USA. Spatial autocor-relation analysis and heterogeneity tests of haplotype frequencies among regions within the Gulf supported the hypothesis of increased gene flow among neighboring localities; i.e., migration of individuals within the Gulf may be inversely related to geographic distance from an estuary or bay of natal origin. Estimates of evolutionary effective female-population size indicate that the red drum subpopulations may be large.  相似文献

The feeding biology of the echinoid Tripneustes gratilla from a seagrass bed off Toliara, on the south-west coast of Madagascar, was investigated during the summer and winter seasons. Repletion indices of the gut of T. gratilla varied seasonally, in such a way that higher amounts of food occurred in the gut in winter than in other seasons. Conversely, a more detailed analysis of one summer and one winter sample of the gut tissue dry weights revealed higher weights in summer (February) than in winter (August). This was interpreted as a varying capability of nutrient storage and closely related to the feeding activity of the echinoid. This inverse relationship between feeding activity and nutrient storage was suggested to be dependent on gonadal growth. Indeed, higher food consumption was observed during the post-spawning period (August), that is, when most of the energy accumulated was used up for gonadal growth. Low feeding activity occurred when a sufficient amount of energy was accumulated in gut tissues (February), the time corresponding to the initiation of gonadal growth. Investigations on the feeding habits, using Ivlev's electivity index, revealed preferential feeding of T. gratilla on Syringodium isoetifolium, the dominant seagrass species found in the gut. This was partly related to the higher availability of that particular seagrass species in the field. However, its soft and terete leaf blade's morphology also makes it easier to manipulate and ingest. Studies on the feeding behaviour indicated the presence of a diel feeding cycle in T. gratilla individuals in both summer and winter seasons. Yet, its pattern varied between the two studied months (one summer and one winter) as the cycle was less contrasted during period of active feeding, i.e. in winter compared to summer. This study provides novel information on how intrinsic factors, such as physiological state, can govern the feeding activity of T. gratilla living in a seagrass habitat.  相似文献

A positive correlation between the degree of individual heterozygosity (H) at five polymorphic enzyme loci and shell length was reported for a cohort of Mytilus edulis L. sampled in September, 1983, two months after settlement (Koehn and Gaffney, 1984). In the present study, the same cohort was resampled four and eight months after settlement in November, 1983, and April, 1984, respectively. Among individuals four months of age, there was a small, but statistically significant, negative correlation between H and shell length. In this sample, heterozygote deficiency in the cohort was less than that of any size group in the September sample. The reversal of the H-size relationship between September and November suggests that differential mortality, particularly among small, homozygous individuals, occurred in this period. For individuals eight months of age, there was no correlation between H and shell length, there was no heterozygote deficiency in the cohort and the average heterozygosity was the same as that of the largest individuals in September. At the youngest age, there was a positive relationship, between H and growth rate; as aging occurred, differential mortality altered the relationship between H and growth rate. viability differences among heterozygosity classes obscured the original effect of H on growth rate. If there is a positive relationship between heterozygosity and size, it can most likely be detected from sampling a large outbreeding population before differential mortality occurs and before energy is allocated to reproduction.  相似文献

The regeneration rate of arms of the infaunal brittlestar Ophiophragmus filograneus was determined in natural and planted beds of the seagrass (Halodule wrighttii) in Tampa Bay, Florida, USA in 1990. Annually, brittlestar densities did not differ on average between the two beds, but they did show marked differences on individual dates. Rates of arm loss could not be determined for the two sites separately, but were estimated for the entire area. Between 52 and 94% of the brittlestars collected showed evidence of arm regeneration. Approximately one-third of those collected were regenerating one arm, with smaller proportions regenerating two or more arms. Regeneration rate was greater overall for individuals that had lost more tissue; however, the rate of soft-tissue regeneration per arm regenerated was significantly greater for those that had lost one arm compared to those that had lost three arms. The rate of soft-tissue regeneration did not differe between individuals from the two seagrass beds, and regeneration rate was lower than reported for other infaunal brittlestars. Skeletal regeneration per arm was similar in both arm-removal treatments. This result supports the hypothesis that echinoderm skeleton is energetically inexpensive and may help to lengthen arms during early regeneration. The rate of skeletal production was three-fold greater in individuals from the planted seagrass than in those from the natural. bed. As increased skeletal regeneration requires some additional energy, this indicates a greater energy expenditure and differential allocation by brittlestars regenerating in the planted seagrass areas.  相似文献

Heterozygosity and growth in transplanted mussels   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Growth comparisons were made involving mussels (Mytilus spp.) collected from five different localities in Britain in 1980–1981. Two of the localities, Mumbles, South Wales, and Bude, Southwest England, have pure populations of M. edulis and M. galloprovincialis, respectively. The other three, Whitsand Bay, Southwest England, Croyde Bay, Southwest England and Robin Hood's Bay, Northeast England, have hybrid populations with both M. edulis and M. galloprovincialis ancestry. To make growth comparisons, mussels from different populations were mixed in oyster nets and transplanted to three different localities. After periods of transplantation varying between several months and one year, growth was assessed by measuring increase in shell length or dry body weight. Starch-gel electrophoresis was used to assay variation in the transplanted mussels at three allozyme loci partially diagnostic for M. edulis and M. galloprovincialis. The results provide evidence of small growth differences between populations and between allozyme genotypes within populations. These differences accounted for no more than a few percent of the total variation in growth between mussels. Statistically significant results were obtained, but were frequently found not to be reproducible. There is no clear evidence of a growth difference between M. edulis and M. galloprovincialis. Allozyme heterozygotes appear to have growth rates intermediate between allozyme homozygotes; this study thus fails to provide evidence for overdominance with respect to growth rate.  相似文献

The population genetic structure of the neon damselfish (Pomacentrus coelestis) in the northwestern Pacific Ocean was revealed by the hypervariable control region of the mitochondrial gene (343 bp). In total, 170 individuals were sampled from 8 localities distributed between Taiwan and Japan, and 71 haplotypes were obtained through sequence alignment. High haplotype diversity (= 0.956 ± 0.008) with low nucleotide diversity (π = 0.010 ± 0.006) was observed, and the results of the mismatch distribution test suggested that a historical population expansion after a period of population bottleneck might have occurred among P. coelestis populations. Based on the results of the UPGMA tree and AMOVA (Φct = 0.193, < 0.05) analyses, fish populations from eight localities could be divided into two groups: one includes populations from localities around mainland Japan, and the other includes those from Okinawa and southern Taiwan. A genetic break was found between populations from mainland Japan and Okinawa, and this break was congruent with the pattern of phenotypic variations documented in previous studies. This evidence supports the latitudinal variation of reproductive traits among P. coelestis populations likely being genetically based. It is suggested that the changes in sea level and sea surface temperatures during past glaciations might have resulted in population bottlenecks in P. coelestis and the modern populations in the northern West Pacific are likely the results of recolonization after such events. The Kuroshio Current acts not only as a vehicle for larval transport along its pathway (between populations in southern Taiwan and Okinawa) but also as a barrier for larval dispersal across the Kuroshio axis (between populations in mainland Japan and Okinawa). Protein electrophoresis on starch gels was used to investigate population genetic structure of the barnacles Chthamalus montagui Southward and C. stellatus (Poli) over their north-east Atlantic and Mediterranean ranges. In each species, a single locus exhibited marked differentiation of allele frequencies between Atlantic and Mediterranean localities; in C. stellatus, genetic differentiation between the two basins had not previously been noted. In both species, mean heterozygosity per locus appeared higher in the Mediterranean samples than in the Atlantic, and Mediterranean populations had more alleles at the loci studied. Possible explanations for the differentiation between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean populations are discussed. Received: 30 May 1996 / Accepted: 17 September 1996  相似文献

Day-night comparisons of the motile epifauna in the canopy of seagrass beds in the Indian River lagoon, Florida revealed that abundances were not stable over the diel period. Collections were made between February and June, 1982. Higher densities of epifauna occurred on seagrasses at night. For both of the numerically-dominant gastropod and crustacean groups, four of the five top ranked species followed this diel pattern. Crustaceans showed particularly large changes in abundance, averaging a twofold increase in nocturnal samples. Faunal similarity between day and night collections remained high, however, indicating that community structure was preserved during diel abundance changes. Equating epifauna collected from seagrass blades with those associated with the seagrass habitat in general therefore may be erroneous, particularly if collections are made during daylight. Changes in prey availability due to the diel pattern are likely to extend to important community trophic functions.  相似文献

To test the importance of special environments for local genetic subdivision in species with a larval phase, we examined allozyme variation among populations of the intertidal snail Austrocochlea constricta, in 18 tidal ponds in the Houtman Abrolhos Islands, Western Australia. Levels of genetic divergence between pond populations were correlated with those of parallel analyses among adjacent shore populations. However, divergence among the isolated ponds, which lack surface connection to the sea, were generally substantially higher, with an overall FST of 0.408, compared with 0.274 among the shore sites. The pond populations had less genetic variation than their shore counterparts, and the reduction of heterozygosity was correlated with the isolation of the pond population, as measured by FST. Both the degree of isolation and the reduction of heterozygosity were greater in deeper ponds, where snails can produce a local pool of larvae. In contrast, ponds that dry out frequently are less likely to allow production of local recruits, and these appear to be better connected genetically to adjacent shore populations. These patterns contrast sharply with those previously documented at the same sites for the direct-developing snail Bembicium vittatum, which shows greater isolation in ponds that are often dry. The comparison between the two species shows significant interaction between intrinsic and extrinsic impediments to gene flow, and highlights the importance of characteristics of the life history in determining which circumstances favour isolation of local populations.Electronic Supplementary Material Supplementary material is available in the online version of this article at http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s00277-005-1553-5.Communicated by G.F.
