Male Iberian rock lizards (Lacerta monticola) produce copulatory plugs that adhere firmly inside the female cloaca and occlude both oviducts. These plugs do not prevent rival male insemination, as they neither reduce female attractiveness or receptivity to rival males nor do they function as chastity belts. Prior to copulation, males bite various regions of the female body, including the cloacal region. A previous plug in the female cloaca is expelled only after rival male intromission. We hypothesized that: (1) such male pre-copulatory behaviours function to loosen plug adherence to the female cloaca, thereby facilitating intromission, and that (2) the hemipenis plays a role in displacing a previous plug prior to the delivery of a new plug. Neither of these hypotheses was supported. Instead, our results indicate that rival males can intromit the hemipenis past a previous plug in the female cloaca and deliver their own plug underneath it. Consequently, previous plugs are pushed away from the oviductal openings and even dislodged from the female cloaca. Copulation duration was determined both by the time used by males to deliver a plug and by the fact that males prolonged copulation beyond plug delivery. There seemed to be sexual conflict over prolonged copulation, which was resolved by the male/female head-length ratio. The adaptive value of Iberian rock lizard copulatory plugs and prolonged copulation in Iberian rock lizards is discussed in the context of sperm competition.Communicated by S. Downes  相似文献

Summary Male passerine birds store sperm in a cloacal protuberance during the breeding season. We consider three hypotheses to explain interspecific variation in relative cloacal protuberance size. The copulation efficiency hypothesis states that a relatively large cloacal protuberance facilitates sperm transfer and predicts more rapid copulation in species with larger protuberances. There is insufficient data to test this idea rigorously, but we found no evidence for such an effect. The spermatozoa size hypothesis is a non-functional hypothesis which states that cloacal protuberance size is merely a consequence of sperm size, and predicts that species with larger spermatozoa have relatively larger cloacal protuberances. Sperm length was positively correlated with protuberance size, providing support for this hypothesis, although it seems unlikely that variation in sperm size alone is sufficient to account for variation in protuberance size because the numbers of sperm stored in the cloacal protuberance were also positively correlated with its size. The sperm competition hypothesis states that the cloacal protuberance is a sperm store and predicts that when sperm competition is intense, as measured by male copulation frequency and or mating system, males will have relatively large protuberances and testes mass. The sperm competition hypothesis was supported: in a comparative study in which we controlled for phylogenetic effects, relative cloacal protuberance size was significantly and positively correlated with copulation frequency. Across all mating systems protuberance size was also positively correlated with the mass of seminal glomera tissue, the number of sperm stored in the seminal glomera, and with relative testes size. These results suggest that where sperm competition is intense, a large cloacal protuberance is required to maintain a large sperm reserve for a high copulation rate.Correspondence to: T.R. Female copulation calls are mating-associated vocalizations that occur in some species of Old World monkeys and apes. We argue that copulation calls have two immediate functions: to encourage mating attempts by other males and to increase mate guarding by the consort male. We hypothesize that female copulation calls have evolved under the selective pressures of risk of infanticide and sperm competition. When male mate guarding is effective, copulation calls allow females to concentrate paternity in dominant males and benefit from their protection against the risk of infanticide. When mate guarding is ineffective, copulation calls may bring genetic benefits to females through facilitation of sperm competition. We present a quantitative model in which interspecific variation in females' promiscuity predicts their tendency to use copulation calls in conjunction with mating. The model predicts that in species with little female promiscuity, copulation calls should be rare and exhibited only in association with mating with dominant males. In species in which females are highly promiscuous, copulation calls should be frequent and unrelated to male dominance rank. The limited data available to test the model support its main predictions as well as the predicted relation between copulation calls and male dominance rank.

In passerine birds, storage and maturation of sperm takes place in the cloacal protuberance (CP), an external swelling of the reproductive organ. The considerable variation in CP size among species is presumed to be a consequence of varying levels of sperm-competition, but whether individual variation in CP size within a species also reflects sperm competition is not well established. Here, we study temporal variation in male CP size in relation to within-pair and extra-pair mating opportunities and cuckoldry risk in purple-crowned fairy-wrens Malurus coronatus. This is a socially monogamous cooperatively breeding passerine that can breed year-round and has low levels of extra-pair paternity (in 6?% of broods). We show that male CP size sharply increased a few weeks before, and rapidly regressed after his partner laid eggs, consistent with a cost of its maintenance and/or sperm production. Surprisingly, despite low levels of extra-pair paternity, CP size of non-breeding and pre-breeding males was positively correlated with the number of breeding females in the population, suggesting that CP size is sensitive to extra-pair mating opportunities. However, CP sizes do not seem to reflect cuckoldry risk: CP size of dominant males was unaffected by the presence of a subordinate that was unrelated to the dominant female, although those subordinates occasionally sire offspring, and had a larger CP than subordinates living with their mother. Our results suggest that, even in a species with low levels of extra-pair paternity, individual investment in sperm storage reflects both within-pair and, albeit to lesser extent, extra-pair mating opportunities.  相似文献

Summary The non-territorial dragonfly Sympetrum danae shows a high degree of post-copulatory mate-guarding, which suggests precedence of the last male's sperm. Irradiated male techniques revealed that the last male that mates with a female fertilizes an average of 95% (100% in 28% of the cases) of the clutch laid immediately after copulation, irrespective of any previous matings. Sperm volume estimates in both sexes and sperm opacity changes in females at 7 stages of copulation and oviposition indicated that males remove 41–87% of previously deposited sperm from the female's storage organs during the first 5 min of the copulation. Ejaculation takes place during the remaining 10–15 min. We maintain that indirect estimates of precedence in libellulids, based on sperm volume changes, always understimate reality because of the supplementing effect of a first-in, last out mechanism. Because males are skilled at achieving sperm precedence, they are forced to be good guards as well, since a risk of take-overs exists. Females are believed to benefit from contact guarding because it results in a lowered risk of male harassment and predation as well as a lower energy expenditure during oviposition.  相似文献

Summary The Japanese calopterygid damselfly Mnais pruinosa pruinosa shows three distinct copulation durations (Siva-Jothy and Tsubaki 1989). A variety of factors which might influence copulation duration were investigated. Results indicate that the temperature in the vicinity of copulating pairs, the rate at which males encountered receptive females, territory quality, the rate of agonistic interactions between males, female gravidity and female willingness to oviposit have no effect on copulation duration. The most significant factor was the location of the site at which males captured their mates. We suggest that under natural conditions the location of the capture site provides males with reliable, indirect information about a female's intention to oviposit: it is important for males of this species to acquire such information since sperm precedence, and therefore reproductive success, is in part dependant on the interval experienced by females between copulation and subsequent oviposition. The results are discussed and it is suggested that the three observed mate-securing tactics of M.p. pruinosa are facultative and information-dependant.  相似文献

Summary Males of the damselfly Mnais pruinosa pruinosa were observed to use three different tactics to secure mates. The mean duration of copulation differed between the three observed tatics and resulted in varying degrees of sperm removal and insemination. It is shown that the last male to mate had almost 100% sperm precedence immediately after copulation regardless of the duration of copulation and therefore the quantity of sperm removed. In situations where less than 100% of rivals' sperm was removed the sperm from different males mixed within the female sperm storage organs over a period of about 6 days: sperm mixing produced variation in last male sperm precedence. The significance of sperm mixing in M. p. pruinosa is discussed in the context of the observed matesecuring tactics and the frequent female habit (37% of observations) of ovipositing without remating during an oviposition bout.  相似文献

Postcopulatory processes can influence male reproductive success in several animal species. Females can use different mechanisms to bias male paternity after copulation. One of such mechanisms consists in expelling all or part of the ejaculate after copulation. Euxesta bilimeki is an Ulidiid fly whose females not only frequently expel ejaculates after mating but also consume the ejaculate after expulsion. In order to understand the significance of these behaviors we examined video recordings of courtship, copulatory, and postcopulatory behaviours. The presence of sperm in female storage organs was confirmed after mating with males of different sizes and was correlated with duration of courtship, copulation, and the period from the end of copulation to ejaculate expulsion. The effect of ejaculate consumption on female fitness (fecundity and longevity) was compared among females held under different dietary treatments: a rich diet consisting of protein, sugar and water, an intermediate diet composed of sugar and water, a poor diet of only water and females that were completely deprived of food and water. All of the observed females expelled ejaculates after mating. The probability of storing sperm in the two spermathecae and the ventral receptacle was correlated with interactions between the duration of all behaviours examined and male size. Except for starved females, who lived longer when allowed to consume ejaculates, ejaculate consumption had no effect on fitness. Results suggest that females can bias sperm storage according to male mating effort, while the consumed ejaculate had some nutritional value only evident when females were completely starved.  相似文献

In a recent review, Westneat and Stewart (2003) compiled evidence that extra-pair paternity results from a three-player interaction in which sexual conflict is a potent force. Sequentially polyandrous species of birds appear to fit this idea well. Earlier breeding males may attempt to use sperm storage by females to obtain paternity in their mates subsequent clutches. Later-breeding males may consequently attempt to avoid sperm competition by preferring to pair with previously unmated females. Females may bias events one way or the other. We examined the applicability of these hypotheses by studying mating behavior and paternity in red-necked phalaropes (Phalaropus lobatus), a sex-role reversed, socially polyandrous shorebird. Male red-necked phalaropes guarded mates more strongly than other shorebirds. Males increased within-pair copulation attempts during their mates fertile period, and maintained or further increased attempts towards the end of laying, suggesting an attempt to fertilize the females next clutch; these attempts were usually thwarted by the female. Paired males sought extra-pair copulations with females about to re-enter the breeding pool. Multilocus DNA fingerprinting showed that 6% of clutches (4/63) each contained one chick sired by a male other than the incubator, producing a population rate of these events of 1.7% (n=226 chicks). Male mates had full paternity in all first clutches (n=25) and 15 of 16 monogamous replacement clutches. In contrast, 3 of 6 clutches of second males contained extra-pair young likely fathered by the females previous mate. Previously mated female phalaropes may employ counter-strategies that prevent later mating males from discriminating against them. The stability of this polyandrous system, in which males provide all parental care, ultimately may depend on females providing males with eggs containing primarily genes of the incubating male, and not a previous mate.Communicated by M. Male Callosobruchus maculatus F. (Coleoptera: Bruchidae) inseminate more sperm than females can effectively store in their spermathecae. This study examines the adaptive significance of excess sperm transfer by measuring components of male and female reproductive success in response to manipulating the number of sperm inseminated. The number of sperm transferred during copulation was reduced from 56,000 ±4,462 to 8,700±1,194 by sequentially mating males to virgin females. Reducing the number of sperm inseminated by the first male to mate had no effect on the extent of sperm precedence, but reducing the number of sperm inseminated by the second male resulted in a significant reduction in the extent of sperm precedence. When large numbers of sperm are inseminated the remating refractory period of females is increased. These results indicate that males transferring large numbers of sperm during copulation have a two-fold advantage at fertilization; they are more effective at preempting previously stored sperm and they are likely to father more offspring by delaying the time of female remating. The transfer of excess sperm does not appear to serve as nonpromiscuous male mating effort; the number of eggs laid, their fertility and the subsequent survival of zygotes were unaffected by manipulating the number of sperm inseminated. The underlying mechanisms of sperm precedence were also examined. Simple models of sperm displacement failed to accurately predict the patterns of sperm precedence observed in this species. However, the results do not provide conclusive evidence against the models but rather serve to highlight our limited understanding of the movement of sperm within the female's reproductive tract.  相似文献

Summary Copulation in Ischnura graellsii may be divided into three stages, according to the movements and position of the male's abdomen. We measured sperm volumes in males and females interrupted at different phases of copulation in laboratory-reared and field specimens. The results showed that males remove sperm from the female during stage I, and do not transfer sperm until stage Il of the copulation. In the field females interrupted during stage I of copulation had less sperm than postcopula females, and the volume of sperm in laboratory females mated once or twice was similar. These results suggest that males can remove most of the sperm during stage I of copulation. Preparations of in-copula specimens showed the horns of the penis (used to remove sperm) inside the bursa copulatoox and the spermatheca. Therefore males can remove sperm from both organs, in contrast to the other Ischnura species so far studied, where males can empty only the bursa. The length of these horns is positively correlated with male body length, and there are significant differences in length between the left and right horns of individual males. This suggests great variability in the male's ability to remove sperm. On the other hand, ejaculate volume is positively related to male and female size, and negatively to male age. Males are likely to be able to detect the presence of sperm in females: if the effect of population density and time of start of copulation are taken into account, copulations are longer with mated than with virgin females. Using genetic markers, sperm precedence was studied by rearing the female offspring of 6 females mated with two males of different genotype. In 5 out of 6 crosses, the second male fertilized all the eggs laid by the female in her first clutch. On average, the following clutches were progressively more fertilized by the first male, but there were striking differences between crosses. Sperm competition is a well-recognised agent in the evolution of sperm and ejaculate structure, as well as variation in female quality. Models of the evolution of ejaculate expenditure predict that male body condition, female fecundity and the risk and intensity of sperm competition may be the ultimate factors shaping optimal ejaculate size. We investigated sperm allocation in Austropotamobius italicus, a freshwater crayfish exhibiting a coercive mating system and external fertilisation, in relation to male and female traits and copulation behaviour under laboratory conditions. We found that mating males were sensitive to female size and produced larger ejaculates when mating with larger females, which were more fecund in terms of number of eggs produced. We found no evidence for female egg production being sperm-limited, as the number of eggs was not dependent on male sperm expenditure. Copulation duration and number of ejaculations reliably predicted the amount of sperm transferred, and both these behavioural measures positively covaried with female body size. These results indicate that male freshwater crayfish can modulate their sperm expenditure in accordance with cues that indicate female fecundity. In addition, a novel finding that emerged from this study is the decrease in sperm expenditure with male body size, which may either suggest that large, old male crayfish are better able than small males to economise sperm at a given mating to perform multiple matings during a reproductive season, or that they experience senescence of their reproductive performance.  相似文献

Summary A North American water strider, Gerris remigis (Hemiptera) copulates for prolonged periods of time, apparently beyond the time necessary for insemination (Rubenstein 1984; Wilcox 1984; Clark 1987), I tested predictions from two different hypotheses of the adaptive significance of this behavior. Manipulations of the operational sex ratio in artificial streams revealed that water striders copulate significantly longer when the sex ratio is male-biased. This result is consistent with the hypothesis that prolonged copulation functions as a type of contact mate guarding, which reduces sperm competition by preventing the female from remating prior to oviposition. The finding is also consistent with the hypothesis that copulation is prolonged to enhance female foraging efficiency. In a second experiment, sex ratio and total population density were held constant, and the period of food deprivation of females was manipulated. Contrary to the predictions of the female foraging hypothesis, starved females did not copulate longer than fed females. Of the two hypotheses considered, only the copulatory guarding hypothesis explains both results. This does not mean, however, that there is no selective benefit from the enhanced foraging efficiency resulting from prolonged copulation. Nor does it exclude the possibility that this benefit has been necessary for the evolution of prolonged copulation in water striders.  相似文献

Typically three events occur when Octopus vulgaris Cuvier mates. The male inserts its hectocotylus into the mantle cavity of the female; the hectocotylus and the bodies of the male and female become quiescent; and the female increases its ventilation rate about 2.5 times, on the average, above its precopulatory base rate. It is hypothesized that the increased ventilation rate of the female provides the stimulus to the male to transfer its spermatophore to the oviduct. Since the insertion of the hectocotylus and the female's increased ventilation rate may be dissociated, it is suggested that copulation be defined as the attachment of the hectocotylus to the oviduct. A conditioned ventilation-rate increase in the female was observed with repeated testing. Observation of arching and pumping movements of the male as well as measurements of its ventilation rate before and during copulation indicate that only a few spermatophores are transferred per copulation.  相似文献

Summary The loud and elaborate songs of male songbirds are throught to serve in territorial defense and to stimulate reproductive behavior in the female. We report here that in contrast to several other species, song alone is inadequate to induce sexual (lordosis) behavior in female indigo and lazuli buntings (Passerina cyanea and P. amoena); they require a more elaborate stimulus configuration to develop the full expression of sexual receptivity as indicated by a stereotyped copulation solicitation display. A live male must be present near the female, singing must ensue, and in addition a second and unique vocal utterance must be heard by the female; this is a soft buzzy-sounding vocalization, audible for no more than a few meters, not recognized previously as a critical arousal signal of the male songbird repertoire. Females also utter similar soft sounds in an intimate vocal exchange with the male leading to solicitation of copulation.  相似文献

Summary Bowl and doily spiders, Frontinella pyramitela (Araneae, Linyphiidae), copulate much longer than the 15 min required for insemination. This apparently maladaptive behavior has been satisfactorily explained in the literature by invoking hypotheses that involve sperm competition, resistance to predators and parasites, or foraging enhancement. In this study, the fertility, live progeny production, progeny size, female receptivity, and latency to oviposition of bowl and doily spiders were measured and related to copulation duration. Using these data, we were able to eliminate six hypotheses and support a seventh: in this species, longer copulations result in larger hatchlings in the first clutch of eggs produced by the female. Although the correlation between copulation duration and progeny size is positive and significant, much of the variation in progeny size remains unexplained, and the reason for the variability in copulation durations remains obscure. Summary Orthetrum cancellatum showed two distinct copulation durations at a study site in the south of France. These different durations are correlated with different degrees of sperm displacement from the female sperm stores; long copulations (894±142 s) resulting in almost 100% sperm removal, and short copulations (21.0±13.5 s) resulting in 10–15% removal. The difference in copulation duration is also related to the site of copulation and to the relative age of the copulating males. At oviposition sites males who gained copulations were relatively young and copulated for long periods. The difference in the duration of copulation and the degree of sperm removal is discussed with reference to the female habit of ovipositing before remating during oviposition episodes, and the possibility of differences in the rate at which males encounter receptive females at the two sites.  相似文献

Sperm competition in birds is likely to have important effects on the behavior and physiology of reproduction in both sexes. For males, such competition should select for large sperm reserves and behavioral adjustment of copulation when reserves are low. We investigated both these possibilities in free-living red-winged blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus), a highly polygynous species with apparently strong sperm competition. We found that the recent copulatory behavior of males did not affect the propensity to copulate with a model female. Ejaculates collected from individual males at 1-h intervals showed no evidence of sperm depletion, yet repeated ejaculates collected less than 10 min apart did. Male ejaculate size was significantly larger if it was the first one of the day (i.e., after an overnight rest). The average ejaculate size was 12.5 (±12.5 SD) million sperm. Males captured during the breeding season had an average of 111.7 (±52.8) million sperm stored in their seminal glomera. Because males average a peak copulation rate of six per female per day, in one day a male might utilize all the sperm in his seminal glomera if more than two females on his territory are fertilizable. We hypothesize that polygyny and sperm competition in this species have combined to select for rapid replenishment of the seminal glomera throughout the day, in contrast to other species that have been studied. Testis size and sperm reserves of male red-winged blackbirds are intermediate between monogamous species and species with intense sperm competition. Sexual conflict can result in the evolution of extreme mating strategies, including forced copulation. Forced extrapair copulation (FEPC) is generally rare among birds, but is common in re-introduced populations of the hihi (Notiomystis cincta), a socially monogamous, New Zealand endemic, endangered passerine. The aim of this study was to understand the patterns of extrapair paternity in a population where the majority of EPC is forced and to examine the factors, in particular female-specific, influencing the proportion of offspring fathered by extrapair males (EPP—extrapair paternity) and the number of males siring extrapair offspring within a brood (EPM) in this species. Using 8 years of comprehensive paternity, life-history and demographic information for 485 breeding attempts, we show that the frequency of EPP is dependent on (1) social male and female age, (2) the month the female fledged, (3) breeding density and (4) whether it was their first or second reproductive event of the season. In addition, we show that both EPP and EPM are negatively associated with breeding synchrony and clutch size is the most important predictor of EPM. Understanding the drivers of EPP and EPM in species with FECP is important because these are strong determinants of variance in reproductive success and the maintenance of extreme mating behaviour.  相似文献

Summary I studied the mating strategies of razorbills Alca torda, a monogamous colonial seabird, during 1987–1989 in Wales, U.K. The outstanding feature of the study population's mating system was the performance of most copulations in mating arenas outside the colony. Females visited the arenas and sometimes accepted extra-pair copulations (EPCs), and males aggressively competed for EPCs. During the fertilizable period of most females, the arenas resembled leks because they contained no resources except mates, and males contributed only sperm to extra-pair females. Typical of leks, the operational sex ratio was strongly male-biased, and male mating success was highly skewed. To examine the potential for sexual selection to operate in this system, I correlated male EPC success with variables that could be associated with male-male competition and/or female choice. The frequencies of three behaviors (interference of copulation attempts, fights won against other males, and EPC attempts), accounted for 62% of the variance in EPC success and were strongly intercorrelated, with interference explaining most of the variance in a multivariate test. EPC success was not correlated with body size, age, paired status or either of two estimates of the time spent in the arena. The hypothesis that male EPC success was determined by active female choice was tested by examining the relative success (EPCs per attempt) of males. Relative success was not correlated with any of the three behaviors associated with absolute success, or with age, body size or attendance, suggesting that male-male competition, mainly in the form of copulation interference, is the principal correlate of EPC success. These findings in a monogamous species illustrate that EPC is a secondary mating system of razorbills in which sexual selection operates. The existence of this system outside the colony raises the possibility that lekking for EPCs may also occur within the nesting territories of other monogamous, colonial species but is hidden by competition for nests and breeding partners.  相似文献
