In this study, spatial and vertical distributions of the invasive ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi in the Caspian Sea were evaluated by using data collected at 41 stations during the August 2001 cruise. A comparison of data from different depths revealed that M. leidyi were generally confined to surface waters. The maximum size of the ctenophore was only 41-45 mm, and the bulk of individuals (85.5%) were <10 mm in length. The average and maximum biomasses of M. leidyi were calculated as 120 and 351 g wet weight m-2, respectively. Whilst highest biomasses were observed in the western and central Middle Caspian Sea, hot spot areas of reproduction were present along the coasts of the western Caspian Sea, with abundance values of up to 2285 ind. m-2. The impact of such high densities of M. leidyi is expected to be significant for the pelagic ecosystem of the Caspian Sea.  相似文献

Stomach content analyses are commonly used to study both fish feeding behaviour and trophic conditions. However, the interpretation of such data depends on fish foraging behaviour for a given environment and how representative the stomach contents are to the prey distribution. Tuna feeding behaviour was studied within the context of a research programme conducted in French Polynesia. Tuna prey distribution was characterised using acoustic measurements and pelagic trawls; thereafter, this distribution was compared with the stomach contents of tuna caught using an instrumented longline. Acoustic, pelagic trawling and stomach content analyses give complementary elements to describe the pelagic trophic habitat and to better understand tuna-prey relationships. The classic concept of a reduced food availability for tunas in the tropical pelagic environment seems relative. Tunas able to dive enough during daytime to exploit the migrant micronektonic species secure a source of regular food. This is particularly true of bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus), which have ecophysiological capacities for this purpose. The behaviour of albacore tuna (T. alalunga), which dive >400 m in depth, remains less clear, as little is known about their vertical behaviour. Lastly, yellowfin tuna (T. albacares), which are distributed in more superficial waters, can better exploit the biomass of juvenile fish and crustaceans exported from the reefs. Analysis of the stomach fullness of tuna caught by longline, a passive gear, generally showed an empty state. This result suggests that most tuna foraging on large prey aggregations present in the study area are quickly satiated and escape longline capture and sampling. A consequence is that studies of tuna feeding behaviour based on longlining may be biased, particularly when large aggregations of prey are present such as in convergence zones. Another potential consequence is that longline tuna catch rates could differ according to prey richness. Longline tuna catch rates may sometimes reflect the relative abundance of prey rather than relative tuna abundance. We studied the winter dietary characteristics of two sympatric mysid species, Mysis mixta and M. relicta, which exploit both benthic and pelagic habitats during diel vertical migrations. Samples collected before and after the ice-covered period in the northern Baltic Sea were investigated using both stomach content analyses and stable isotope analyses of carbon and nitrogen. Both of the mysid species were omnivorous during winter and utilised both benthic and pelagic food sources. The main food source before the ice period was calanoid copepods (40 and 36% for M. mixta and M. relicta, respectively), and after ice-out calanoid copepods (23%) and zooplankton resting eggs (23%) for M. mixta and diatoms (44%) and calanoids (25%) for M. relicta. Their patterns of food utilisation broadly followed seasonal fluctuations in the abundance of the main prey groups. Although pelagic food availability is low in winter both mysid species utilised pelagic prey widely. We also show that when combining these different diet analysis methods it is important to take into account the time lag in isotopic signatures, otherwise the obtained results do not correspond but instead show the feeding history at different times.  相似文献

Surface swarms of the stomatopod Oratosquilla investigatoris (Lloyd, 1907) were observed in the Gulf of Aden and the equatorial western Indian Ocean during 1967. Collections from inshore and offshore swarms were made in both areas, and from demersal trawl catches in the equatorial area. O. investigatoris was also collected from the stomachs of several species of oceanic pelagic and inshore fish from 1965 to 1967, and was also reported in the stomach contents of the lesser frigate bird. Further collections were made from strandings on two oceanic islands in the equatorial area. Indirect observations on the occurrence of the species resulted from increased predation on pelagic longline baits during seasos of apparent abundance of O. investigatoris in the equatorial region. At the surface, predation by the species was observed on fast-swiming fish, and the swimming behaviour was noted. A size range of 6 to 37 mm carapace length (CL) was recorded for the 4000 specimens collected, and there was no size difference between the sexes. Length-frequency analysis of the samples indicated a major mode at 19 to 21 mm CL and an increase in length of 3 mm over 3 months. The sex ratio was weighted in favour of females in the majority of collections. It was concluded that the pelagic swarming of O. investigatoris is an important ecological phenomenon, but not regular in the area, and the factors affecting it could not be deduced from the available data.  相似文献

Swimming trajectories of Calanus euxinus Hulsemann in the Black Sea were studied using an echosounder at 120 and 200 kHz. C. euxinus were acoustically discriminated with respect to vertical migration and swimming speed, according to dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration and the timing of migrations. Species became torpid in water with DO values <0.5 mg lу. The time spent swimming under DO conditions between 2 and 5 mg lу was insignificant, and varied greatly from the 10% to 25% of total time spent swimming under normoxic conditions (5-10 mg lу). C. euxinus formed a concentration layer in the water of 1-3 m thickness. Upward migration was completed in about 3.5 h, starting 2.5 h before and ending 1 h after sunset (average rate: 0.95 cm sу) in summer. Species ascended discretely from the suboxic to the lower boundry of the cold intermediate layer (CIL) at 0.82 cm sу, and passed up the CIL and thermocline fast (2.3 cm sу). Downward migration took less time (2 h), starting ~1 h before and ending ~1 h after sunrise. Swimming speed within the thermocline and CIL was 2.7 cm sу; copepods subsequently returned to daylight depth at a sinking speed of 0.57 cm sу. Total time for C. euxinus to settle to their nocturnal depth layer was about 5 h.  相似文献

The experiments were undertaken to measure, for the first time, cardiac output in yellowtail (Seriola quinqueradiata) during exposure to a harmful red tide flagellate (Chattonella marina). The responses were compared with those during exposure to environmental hypoxia to evaluate the significance of the drop of arterial oxygen partial pressure (PaO2) in the fish-kill mechanisms by C. marina. PaO2 immediately decreased, whereas heart rate (HR) was maintained until shortly before death during exposure to C. marina. Suffocation developing during the exposure resulted from a decrease in blood oxygen content, but not from lowered blood flow to the tissue. Although exposure to both C. marina and hypoxia immediately decreased PaO2, arterial oxygen content (CaO2) and pH (pHa) were significantly lower, whereas HR and cardiac output (&Qdot;) remained significantly higher, for the C. marina-exposed fish than for hypoxia-exposed fish. Although the drop in PaO2 appears to play a pivotal role in the mechanisms of fish death by C. marina, other physiological response(s) should also be considered.  相似文献

We conducted experiments to determine the effect of the increasing ultrasonic/radio transmitter weight on the routine metabolic rate of sea bass. We measured the oxygen consumption (MO2) of fish tagged externally with a dummy transmitter made of a hollow pipe, the weight of which was adjusted with lead to represent in water 0, 1 and 4% (Rtf) of the animal weight. We then developed a theoretical model to estimate, for a given fish size, the range of added weight that fish can compensate for through swimbladder regulation. When RtfБ%, MO2 of untagged and tagged fish did not differ significantly. However, when Rtf reached 4%, fish that carried a tag incurred a significant elevation of oxygen consumption, which represented 28% of their total useable power (or metabolic scope). This result strongly supports the view that a high Rtf ratio contributes to a decrease in available metabolic energy by diverting energy from, e.g., growth or swimming performance. A comparison between the tagged fish and the theoretical model reinforced the hypothesis that, when Rtf attained 4%, the increase in metabolic rate reflected a supplementary and costly swimming effort necessary to maintain vertical position. In this condition, the swimbladder cannot regulate the buoyancy of tagged fish.  相似文献

The distribution of Mytilus edulis Linnaeus, M. galloprovincialis Lamarck, and their hybrids was examined in mussel populations in southwest England in 1996 and 1998. This is a region where both parental taxa and populations containing large numbers of hybrids co-occur yet a fine-scale mapping of the hybrid populations has not been conducted. In this study the geographic distribution of hybrid populations was determined in southwest England over 360 km of coast from Tintagel Castle in north Cornwall to Beer in south Devon. Sample localities were spaced from 5 to 20 km apart. Genotypes for individual mussels were determined using PCR to amplify a size polymorphism at the Glu-5' locus that is completely differentiated between M. edulis and M. galloprovincialis. Hybrid populations, characterized by high frequencies of individuals with heterozygous genotypes and a pattern of decreasing frequency of M. edulis alleles with increasing shell length, were continuously distributed along 180 km of open coast in southwest England. This "hybrid patch" was bordered at one end by geographically extensive populations of pure M. edulis and at the other end by nearly pure populations of M. galloprovincialis. Strong natural selection in hybrid populations results in a decline in the frequency of M. edulis alleles with increasing size. Wave-exposure has previously been implicated as the agent producing this pattern of selection, but in the present study the relationship between allele frequency and body size was not correlated with variation in wave shock intensity among localities within the hybrid zone. The transition between hybrid populations and those containing pure populations of M. edulis or M. galloprovincialis is abrupt which suggests that coastal circulation patterns may provide strong barriers to larval dispersal which accounts for the position and maintenance of the hybrid zone.  相似文献

Round scad mackerel sampled in 1995-1998 were analysed for genetic variation using mitochondrial-DNA and nuclear-DNA markers. Sequence variation for a fragment of the cytochrome b gene (mitochondrial), amplified by polymerase chain reaction, was screened across individuals using single strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP). Sequence analysis of all SSCP haplotypes indicated two mitochondrial clades separated by, on average, 2.3% nucleotide divergence. The geographic distribution of haplotypes was homogeneous (Weir and Cockerham's [^(q)] \hat \theta =-0.002). Also, no geographic heterogeneity was detected for length polymorphism of Intron 1 of the gene encoding aldolase B ([^(q)] \hat \theta =0.005). Although homogeneity in allele frequencies throughout the Indo-Malay archipelago conformed to the expectations for a widely distributed pelagic fish in a highly connected habitat, this was at variance with the sharp geographic structure previously uncovered in Indian scad mackerel, Decapterus russelli, a fish with life-history characteristics similar to D. macrosoma. A remarkable similarity, however, was the occurrence of two similarly distinct clades within each species, suggesting a common history of geographic isolation. Low sea levels in the Pleistocene might have caused the separation and vicariance of populations within both D. macrosoma and D. russelli. Subsequent genetic exchange between populations would then have erased allele-frequency differences at the cytochrome b and aldolase B loci in D. macrosoma while some barrier to gene flow was maintained in D. russelli.  相似文献

BRA-2, a major C-type lectin in the hemolymph of the acorn barnacle Megabalanus rosa was detected in shell-associated proteins. Immobilized BRA-2 promoted CaCO3 crystallization as determined by an in vitro pH-drift mineralization assay. In nature, calcification occurs as wound repair in M. rosa after breakage of the shell plate. To observe this phenomenon, we inserted a rubber cube inside the mantle cavity of M. rosa through the basal plate, and kept the organisms in a tank for several weeks. The rubber cube was covered first with brownish-colored material, probably a melanin, and then with CaCO3 5 weeks after the insertion. In the CaCO3-associated proteins, BRA-3, a minor component of M. rosa hemolymph lectins, was present in addition to BRA-2. The presence of both the lectins and their ligands on the hemocyte was also observed. These results suggest that the C-type lectins of the M. rosa hemolymph participate in mineralization as well as defense in these organisms.  相似文献

Young (0-group) gadoid fish, which have been observed sheltering beneath jellyfish (Scyphozoa and Hydrozoa) umbrellas, may find refugia from predation by retreating among medusan tentacles. The survival of juvenile gadoids may therefore be improved by high abundances of medusae. Jellyfish (including Cyanea lamarckii and C. capillata) were caught in the North Sea during routine sampling for 0-group gadoids (cod Gadus morhua, haddock Melanogrammus aeglefinus, Norway pout Trisopterus esmarkii and whiting Merlangius merlangus) between 1971 and 1986, and considerable overlaps have been shown between the spatial distributions of these fish and medusae. Here correlations are made between the abundance of medusae in the North Sea and the residual survival of 0-group fish, as quantified by the deviation in 1-group recruitment from the expected Ricker modelled estimate. Significant positive correlations between the residual survival of whiting and medusa abundance are evident for each individual Cyanea sp. and for the combined Cyanea spp. ln(maximum) abundance (all R ≥ 0.60, P < 0.01, N = 15). The abundance of jellyfish may thus be an important factor influencing the mortality of whiting in the North Sea, and as such should be considered in the development of ‘ecosystem-based’ management of whiting stocks.  相似文献

Short-term temporal patterns of recruitment have been described in a variety of coral reef fishes and have often been related with lunar and tidal cycles. While the relative importance of lunar and tidal factors in determining recruitment patterns has been difficult to assess, most studies have been done in the Caribbean and Indo-Pacific, where tidal amplitudes are small. We studied the short-term temporal dynamics of fish recruitment at Gorgona Island (tropical eastern Pacific), where there is a large tidal amplitude (~4.4 m). Every other day during three consecutive months in 1998, we directly measured the magnitude of reef fish recruitment to standardized coral units (SCUs) isolated from natural reefs. A total of 40 species from 21 families settled on the SCUs. Of 11 species with sufficient numbers for meaningful statistical analyses, two (Lutjanus guttatus and Pomacanthus zonipectus) had lunar recruitment with peaks near the new moon; three combined species of antennariids showed semilunar recruitment with peaks near moon quarters; and eight other species showed sporadic and aperiodic recruitment pulses. The contribution of lunar (moonlight intensity) and tidal factors (tidal amplitude and net tidal flow) to recruitment dynamics varied among species, although it was generally low (<18%) even among species with periodic patterns, except perhaps in L. guttatus. In this species, recruitment magnitude correlated negatively with moonlight intensity, accounting for 34.5% of the variance. Post-settlement predation by roving predators may be one cause of this relationship. In the remaining species, particularly those with sporadic and aperiodic recruitment pulses, stochastically varying weather and oceanographic events may be more important in determining temporal variation in recruitment.  相似文献

Chlorophyll a and numbers of live pelagic diatoms were recorded from sediment depth profiles at 11 stations in the oligotrophic Øresund, Denmark, in late-June. Extraction efficiency of chlorophyll a analysed fluorometrically did not differ significantly between paired samples of frozen-thawed and fresh sediment. The depth profiles of chlorophyll a could be explained by a diagenetic model involving two different chlorophyll pools: one reactive pool declining exponentially with core depth, and one non-reactive pool, of about 1 µg Chl ml-1 wet sediment, being constant with depth. The number of live diatoms, quantified by the dilution-extinction method, and expressed in terms of most probable number (MPN), declined from an average of about 300,000 g-1 in the surface sediment to zero values at a depth of 13 cm. The number of live cells was significantly correlated with the sediment chlorophyll a, and the profiles of live cells as well as reactive chlorophyll followed the same exponential decline with core depth, suggesting that the main source of chlorophyll in the sediment was live pelagic diatoms. Taxonomic composition of diatoms in the sediment, dominated by the pelagic genera Chaetoceros, Thalassiosira and Skeletonema, matched the species composition in the water column 3 months earlier during the spring bloom. Regular recordings of the phytoplankton community in the water column showed that only these specific bloom species could be the source of the sediment content of diatoms and chlorophyll a. Further, the ratios between live cells and chlorophyll a were similar in the sediment and in the spring bloom. A conservative estimate of depth-integrated pools of diatoms in the sediment suggested that about 44% of the total phytoplankton biomass during the spring bloom was still present as live cells in the sediment after 3 months. This indicates that the spring bloom input to the sediment is not degraded immediately by the benthic fauna.  相似文献

In this study, a proteomic approach was applied for the generation of reference maps and subsequently to detect, quantify and compare the global protein expression between two related species of marine mussels, Mytilus edulis and Mytilus galloprovincialis, growing in their own geographical habitats. A comparative study of the protein profiles generated from analytical two-dimensional electrophoresis gels was performed, and changes in protein expression were analysed quantitatively by computer analysis. An average of 1,278 spots per gel was detected in 16 individuals (8 M. edulis and 8 M. galloprovincialis); however, not all spots were included in the study. Expression of 420 spots was compared, and significant differences in the intensity levels were detected in 37 protein spots (8.8%). Fifteen proteins showed higher expression in M. edulis, and 22 proteins, in M. galloprovincialis. The technique of peptide mass fingerprinting using MALDI-TOF (matrix-assisted laser desorption ionisation/time-of-flight) and/or nanoelectrospray double subfragmentation mass spectrometry enabled the unambiguous identification of 15 of these 37 differentially expressed proteins. Most of the identified proteins can be grouped basically into four broad functional classes: cytoskeletal and myofibrillar proteins, proteins associated with stress response, proteins associated with the storage or production of energy, and proteins related to rearrangement in the synthesis of native structures. These results expand our understanding of the molecular differentiation of the two mussel taxa and serve as a useful base for future ecological, physiological and genetic studies.  相似文献

In demersal fish species with a pelagic larval stage, settlement patterns may be a consequence of variations in larval supply, habitat selection at settlement, and processes acting between the time of settlement and the time of benthic sampling. This study describes temporal (1994-1998) and spatial variation in plaice (Pleuronectes platessa L.) settlement densities in four semi-isolated nursery areas with similar habitat characteristics, in the non-tidal Gullmarsfjord on the west coast of Sweden. Juvenile abundance varied by a factor of ten, both among years and among nursery grounds. For the 3 years when larval sampling was undertaken (1994-1996) and all nursery areas, there was a significant positive relationship between larval supply and juvenile abundance (linear regression: r2=0.45, n=24, P<0.001). On the southern side of the fjord, a significant positive relationship between larval and juvenile abundance was found in one area (r2=0.62, n=6, P<0.05). The absolute mortality rate of plaice after settlement was related to the initial settlement density (r2=0.95, n=20, P<0.001), and to the abundance of predatory shrimps Crangon crangon (r2=0.44, n=20, P<0.01). Plaice otoliths were found in 6% of the shrimp stomachs analysed from an area with high density (13.3 m-2) of newly settled plaice. The present study suggests that the density of juvenile plaice was limited by larval supply to the nursery grounds. Consistency in the relative abundance of juveniles among nursery grounds between years also suggested that some nursery areas may be in the settlement shadow of others. The irregular nature of the coastline in combination with larval depletion could thereby cause small-scale (103-104 m) variation in settlement densities of the same order of magnitude as the inter-annual variability in recruitment to individual nursery grounds.  相似文献

Diets of the demersal fishes on the shelf off Iwate, northern Japan   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Diets of demersal fishes were determined on the shelf (ca. 130 m deep) off Iwate, Japan. Samples were taken in three different types of habitat, an artificial reef (AR) site, a natural reef (NR) site, and sandymud bottom (SB) site, from May 1987 to September 1991, mostly every two months. A total of 67 prey items were recognized in the stomachs of 45 predator fish species. The most important preys were the pelagic fishes Sardinops melanostictus and Engraulis japonicus, which comprised 37% wet wt of the overall stomach contents. The percentage of pelagic fishes was highest at AR site, where fish density was highest. The dominant ten species could be divided into five feeding types. The pelagic fish feeders Physiculus maximowiczi and Gadus macrocephalus fed mainly on S. melanostictus. The dietary breadth of P. maximowiczi was wide, while that of Gadus macrocephalus was narrow. The pelagic crustacean feeder Theragra chalcogramma mostly consumed Themisto japonica and euphausiids and showed the least dietary overlap with other fishes. Benthic fish feeders were Hemitripterus villosus and Liparis tanakai. The benthic crustacean feeders Alcichthys alcicornis and Hexagrammos otakii consumed benthic crustaceans as well as pelagic and benthic fishes and showed the largest dietary breadth. The benthic invertebrate feeders Gymnocanthus intermedius, Dexistes rikuzenius and Tanakius kitaharai fed mainly on polychaetes and benthic crustaceans. But Gymnocanthus intermedius consumed a significant proportion of pelagic fishes. Ontogenetic dietary shift was recognized for these fishes. Pelagic fishes were consumed more intensively by larger individuals, especially true of A. alcicornis, Theragra chalcogramma and Gadus macrocephalus. Predominancy of the two most adundant species, P. maximowiczi and A. alcicornis, may be supported by their wide dietary breadth and the significant proportion of pelagic fish in their diets. Interspecific dietary overlap was low in most cases suggesting that food resources were well partitioned, although some high overlap was observed among the pelagic fish feeders, A. alcicornis, and Gymnocanthus intermedius, and among the benthic invertebrate feeders. Interspecific competition seemed more likely in the benthic invertebrate feeders than in the pelagic fish feeders partly because of superabundance of the pelagic prey S. melanostictus.  相似文献

From a geographical survey of allozyme variation, a history of repeated trans-Arctic invasions since the Plio-Pleistocene is suggested for circumboreal bivalves of the Macoma balthica complex. A principal genetic subdivision, involving several nearly diagnostic loci and Nei's distance D=0.6, distinguishes the clams of the NE Pacific from those of the NE Atlantic. The Pacific taxon is however also present in Europe, in disjunct isolates in the Baltic Sea and White Sea basins. Nevertheless, these populations have marked Atlantic introgressive elements in their gene pools (ca. 30%). Two further population types are recognized, one in the St. Lawrence estuary, Quebec, the other in Varangerfjorden, NE Norway; the latter appears a mixture of Pacific and Atlantic components in almost equal proportions, in local genetic equilibrium (a hybrid swarm). Populations in temperate North America fall outside the circumboreal M. balthica complex discussed here (D=1.0), and are referred to M. petalum. In a scenario of the history and evolution of the M. balthica complex and the similarly subdivided Mytilus edulis complex, the divergence between Pacific and Atlantic taxa started after an initial introduction of Pacific ancestors to the Atlantic basin, enabled by the Pliocene opening of the Bering Strait. During the Pleistocene and Holocene, the ocean basins were, for the most part, effectively isolated, but occasional re-invasions have taken place, causing secondary contacts of the diverged bivalve types on the Atlantic coasts. The recently re-invaded Pacific taxa in northern Europe now seem to thrive only in the extreme marginal environments. Exact dating of the re-invasions is not possible from current data. Apart from the divergence through isolation, hybridization and introgression have significantly molded the present affinities within the M. balthica complex. A formal taxonomic treatment of reticulate and hybridizing lineages is problematic; yet to recognize the evolutionary and systematic diversity within the M. balthica complex, a subspecies distinction between the NE Atlantic clams and those from the Pacific, Baltic and White Sea basins is suggested.Communicated by L. Life table response experiments were performed to evaluate the demographic consequences of: (1) the dietary regimes and (2) the length of laboratory rearing in strains of Dinophilus gyrociliatus, a small infaunal polychaete. The first experiment was performed using animals recently collected from the natural environment and fed either on spinach or on Tetramin (artificial fish food with high caloric content). Starting from this original group, two distinct laboratory strains were established: the first raised only with spinach, the second only with Tetramin. In the first experiment, the group fed on Tetramin exhibited greater population growth rate (5), shorter generation time (T) and reduced expectation of life (e0) with respect to the animals fed on spinach. The second experiment took place 2 years later to evaluate the difference in life history traits between these two laboratory strains. In the case of the group fed on Tetramin, population parameters exhibited marked variations; in fact, 5 and the net reproductive rate (R0) were significantly higher and T and e0 were shorter than the corresponding parameters observed in the first experiment. Conversely, the demographic variations induced by laboratory rearing on a spinach diet were limited to a reduction in the expectation of life. The decomposition analysis showed that the reduction in generation time and the increase in fecundity occurring during the first 4 weeks of life accounted for nearly all the differences in 5. During the long breeding period at constant temperature, photoperiod and salinity, a continuous selection of the most precocious and fecund individuals may have taken place as a consequence of the abundance of resources and the lack of predation.  相似文献

The effect of physical disturbance in the form of trampling on the benthic environment of an intertidal mudflat was investigated. Intense trampling was created as unintended side-effect by benthic ecologists during field experiments in spring and summer 2005, when a mid-shore area of 25 × 25 m was visited twice per month by on average five researchers for a period of 8 months. At the putatively-impacted location (I) (25 × 25 m) and two nearby control locations (Cs) (25 × 25 m each), three sites (4 × 4 m) were randomly selected and at each site, three plots (50 × 50 cm) were sampled after 18 and 40 days from the end of the disturbance. Multivariate and univariate asymmetrical analyses tested for changes in the macrofaunal assemblage, biomass of microphytobenthos and various sediment properties (grain-size, water content, NH4 and NO3 concentrations in the pore water) between the two control locations (Cs) and the putatively-impacted location (I). There were no detectable changes in the sediment properties and microphytobenthos biomass, but variability at small scale was observed. Microphytobenthos and NH4 were correlated at I to the number of footprints, as estimated by the percentage cover of physical depressions. This indicated that trampling could have an impact at small scales, but more investigation is needed. Trampling, instead, clearly modified the abundance and population dynamics of the clam Macoma balthica (L.) and the cockle Cerastoderma edule (L.). There was a negative impact on adults of both species, probably because footsteps directly killed or buried the animals, provoking asphyxia. Conversely, trampling indirectly enhanced recruitment rate of M. balthica, while small-sized C. edule did not react to the trampling. It was likely that small animals could recover more quickly because trampling occurred during the growing season and there was a continuous supply of larvae and juveniles. In addition, trampling might have weakened negative adult-juvenile interactions between adult cockles and juvenile M. balthica, thus facilitating the recruitment. Our findings indicated that human trampling is a relevant source of disturbance for the conservation and management of mudflats. During the growing season recovery can be fast, but in the long-term it might lead towards the dominance of M. balthica to the cost of C. edule, thereby affecting ecosystem functioning.  相似文献

Three species of Carapidae have in common a tenuis larval stage, during which they settle in the lagoon and take refuge in the same species of holothuroid. From the juvenile stage, Carapus homei and C. boraborensis are commensal, whereas Encheliophis gracilis is parasitic. The aims of this study were to analyse to what extent the ontogenetic changes of the otic capsule affected the shape of the inner ear and how environmental cues, due to the above-mentioned life history and the style, could influence the structure of the sagitta. Sagittal sections revealed a three-dimensional asymmetry with a nucleus close to the proximal surface. Observations of the growth axis of the sagitta suggest it has a morphogenetic impact on the otic cavity. Each sagitta contains three main zones related to the life stages of the fish. Bands and checks were observed in the third zone in C. homei and C. boraborensis, but this pattern was less discernible in E. gracilis. These structural differences in zone 3 could be related to the commensal and parasitic life styles of these fishes. Further studies dealing with otosac features and otolith functions are suggested.  相似文献
