Biodegradation behavior of nonylphenol polyethoxylates (NPEOs) under Fe(III)-reducing conditions was investigated. The study demonstrated that NPEOs could be rapidly biodegraded under Fe(III)-reducing conditions. Almost 60% of the total NPEOs were removed within three days and the maximum biodegradation rate was 34.95+/-0.84 microM d(-1). NPEOs were degraded via sequential removal of ether units under Fe(III)-reducing conditions. No nonylphenol polyethoxy-carboxylates (NPECs) were formed in this process. This ether removal process was coupled to Fe(III) reduction. Nonylphenol (NP), nonylphenol monoethoxylate (NP1EO), and nonylphenol diethoxylate (NP2EO) slightly accumulated in the anaerobic biodegradation process. The accumulation of these estrogenic metabolites led to a significant increase in the estrogenic activity during the biodegradation period. The calculated estrogenic activity reached its top on day 14 when the total concentration of these estrogenic metabolites was maximal. This is the first report of the primary biodegradation behavior of NPEOs under Fe(III)-reducing conditions. These findings are of major environmental importance in terms of the environmental behavior of NPEO contaminants in natural environment.  相似文献

Concentrations of degradation products of nonylphenol polyethoxylates (NPEOs) were analyzed in river water samples in order to determine the distribution characteristic of these alkylphenolic compounds in 18 major rivers of Taiwan. The degradation products of NPEOs were detected in all river samples, with the dicarboxylates alkylphenolic degradation products (CAPEC) being detected most frequently and at the highest concentrations. Concentrations of NP and NP1EO in rivers ranged from n.d. to 5.1 μg l−1 and n.d. to 0.5 μg l−1, respectively. The total concentrations of shortened carboxylates (i.e., NP1EC + NP2EC + NP3EC) and dicarboxylates alkylphenolic degradation products (CAP1EC + CAP2EC) ranged from n.d. to 63.6 μg l−1 and n.d. to 94.6 μg l−1, respectively. Concentrations of NP2EC, NP3EC and all CAPEC residues were determined semi-quantitatively by comparing with the internal standard. Significantly higher concentrations of CAPEC residues were detected in the river waters as compared to those of NP, NP1EO and NPEC degradation products and the average proportions of these compounds in the samples of the rivers were as follows: NP + NP1EO was 5 ± 2.5%, total NPEC was 25 ± 12%, and total CAPEC was 70 ± 12%. The high concentration ratios of CAPEC/NPEC illustrate that aerobic biodegradation plays a main route in the fate of NPEO in the rivers of Taiwan.  相似文献

Biodegradation of nonylphenol in river sediment   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We investigated the biodegradation of nonylphenol monoethoxylate (NP1EO) and nonylphenol (NP) by aerobic microbes in sediment samples collected at four sites along the Erren River in southern Taiwan. Aerobic degradation rate constants (k1) and half-lives (t1/2) for NP (2 microg g(-1)) ranged from 0.007 to 0.051 day(-1) and 13.6 to 99.0 days, respectively; for NP1EO (2 microg g(-1)) the ranges were 0.006 to 0.010 day(-1) and 69.3 to 115.5 days. Aerobic degradation rates for NP and NP1EO were enhanced by shaking and increased temperature, and delayed by the addition of Pb, Cd, Cu, Zn, phthalic acid esters (PAEs), and NaCl, as well as by reduced levels of ammonium, phosphate, and sulfate. Of the microorganism strains isolated from the sediment samples, we found that strain JC1 (identified as Pseudomonas sp.) expressed the best biodegrading ability. Also noted was the presence of 4'-amino-acetophenone, an intermediate product resulting from the aerobic degradation of NP by Pseudomonas sp.  相似文献

Alkylphenols (APs), alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEOs), ethoxycarboxylate metabolites (APECs) and bisphenol A were determined in surface water using solid-phase extraction (SPE) followed by triple-quadrupole LC-MS-MS. APs were separated by LC from APECs using an acetonitrile-water-gradient without the addition of any buffer. Nonylphenol ethoxycarboxylates (NPECs) interfere in the detection of nonylphenols (NPs) when using an acidic mobile phase, because they produce the same MS-MS fragment ions (219>133 and 147). 4n-NP shows the characteristic transition 219>106; it is well suited as internal standard. Nonylphenol ethoxylates NPE(n)Os (n=1-17) were analysed separately in a second run by positive ionization using an ammonium acetate mobile phase. Textile industry discharges, the corresponding wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluents and the receiving rivers in Belgium and Italy were analysed. Among the substances investigated, NPE1C and NPE2O exhibited the highest concentrations in the water samples, up to 4.5 microg l(-1) NPE1C in a WWTP effluent and 3.6 microg l(-1) NPE2O in a river. The highest NP levels were found in the receiving rivers (max. 2.5 microg l(-1)). The predicted no-effect concentration (PNEC) for NP of 0.33 microg l(-1) for water species was frequently exceeded in the surface waters investigated, suggesting potential adverse effects to the aquatic environment.  相似文献

Degradation of nonylphenol by anaerobic microorganisms from river sediment   总被引:17,自引:0,他引:17

We investigated the degradation of nonylphenol monoethoxylate (NP1EO) and nonylphenol (NP) by anaerobic microbes in sediment samples collected at four sites along the Erren River in southern Taiwan. Anaerobic degradation rate constants (k1) and half-lives (t1/2) for NP (2 microg/g) ranged from 0.010 to 0.015 1/day and 46.2 to 69.3 days respectively. For NP1EO (2 microg/g), the ranges were 0.009-0.014 1/day and 49.5-77.0 days respectively. Degradation rates for NP and NP1EO were enhanced by increasing temperature and inhibited by the addition of acetate, pyruvate, lactate, manganese dioxide, ferric chloride, sodium chloride, heavy metals, and phthalic acid esters. Degradation was also measured under three anaerobic conditions. Results show the high-to-low order of degradation rates to be sulfate-reducing conditions > methanogenic conditions > nitrate-reducing conditions. The results show that sulfate-reducing bacteria, methanogen, and eubacteria are involved in the degradation of NP and NP1EO, with sulfate-reducing bacteria being a major component of the river sediment.  相似文献

The biodegradation and elimination of antibiotics in municipal wastewater treatment plants is of particular concern because sewage is the main exposure route for antibiotics used in human medicine. The inherent biodegradability of 17 antibiotics was determined in a combined test design based on the Zahn-Wellens test (OECD 302 B, 1992) and the CO2-evolution test (OECD 301 B, 1992). CO2 Evolution test (Modified Sturm test). OECD Guideline for the Testing of Chemicals, Paris). Only benzylpenicillin sodium salt (Penicillin G) proved to be ultimately biodegradable, reaching ThCO2 degradation extents of 78-87%. Among the others, only amoxicillin, imipenem and nystatin showed certain ultimate biodegradation in few of the parallel flasks and can be regarded as partially biodegradable with formation of stable metabolites. The DOC-elimination of tetracycline-HCl showed a typical degradation curve starting with 18% and reaching the plateau phase at 80% after 21 days. Nevertheless, the CO2-evolution measured in parallel did not support the data, indicating that the time needed for reaching the adsorption equilibrium was underestimated. Several other antibiotics showed considerable DOC-elimination in the inherent test while only minor incidences of ultimate biodegradation were observed. The combination of CO2-evolution and DOC-elimination is a suitable instrument for assessing the behaviour of chemicals within one test. It enables one to assess both inherent ultimate biodegradability and DOC-elimination by sorption. The applicability of the test is limited to substances with a moderate toxicity.  相似文献

Acrylic acid, methyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate, and butyl acrylate are commercially important and widely used materials. This paper reports the results of a series of fate and aquatic toxicity studies. The mobility in soil of acrylic acid and its esters ranged from 'medium' to 'very high'. Calculated bioconcentration factors ranged from 1 to 37, suggesting a low bioconcentration potential. Acrylic acid and methyl acrylate showed limited biodegradability in the five day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) test, while ethyl acrylate and butyl acrylate were degraded easily (77% and 56%, respectively). Using the OECD method 301D 28-d closed bottle test, degradability for acrylic acid was 81% at 28 days, while the acrylic esters ranged from 57% to 60%. Acrylic acid degraded rapidly to carbon dioxide in soil (t1/2 < 1 day). Toxicity tests were conducted using freshwater and marine fish, invertebrates, and algae. Acrylic acid effect concentrations for fish and invertebrates ranged from 27 to 236 mg/l. Effect concentrations (LC50 or EC50) for fish and invertebrates using methyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate, and butyl acrylate ranged from 1.1 to 8.2 mg/l. The chronic MATC for acrylic acid with Daphnia magna was 27 mg/l based on length and young produced per adult reproduction day and for ethyl acrylate was 0.29 mg/l based on both the reproductive and growth endpoints. Overall these studies show that acrylic acid and the acrylic esters studied can rapidly biodegrade, have a low potential for persistence or bioaccumulation in the environment, and have low to moderate toxicity.  相似文献

Concentrations of nonylphenol isomers (NP), tertiary octylphenol (t-OP) and nonylphenol monoethoxylate isomers (NP1EO) have been simultaneously determined in the sea water and atmosphere of the North Sea. A decreasing concentration profile appeared following the distance increasing from the coast to the central part of the North Sea. Air-sea exchanges of t-OP and NP were estimated using the two-film resistance model based upon relative air-water concentrations and experimentally derived Henry's law constant. The average of air-sea exchange fluxes was -12+/-6 ng m(-2)day(-1) for t-OP and -39+/-19 ng m(-2)day(-1) for NP, which indicates a net deposition is occurring. These results suggest that the air-sea vapour exchange is an important process that intervenes in the mass balance of alkylphenols in the North Sea.  相似文献

Alkylphenol polyethoxylates (APE) are routinely used as additives in pesticide formulations. Biodegradation of APEs results in the accumulation of persistent short chain mono-, di- and tri-ethoxylates (AP1EO, AP2EO AP3EO) that are more toxic than the parent compounds and potentially oestrogenic. Accumulation of persistent APE metabolites in shallow or ephemeral waters may pose a hazard to aquatic fauna. This study has followed the degradation and formation of individual oligomers in freshwater in static die-away tests with and without illumination. Over 33 days in darkness there was a progressive and complete loss of long chain oligomers (NP8-17EO), transient increases and subsequent loss of short to medium chain oligomers (NP4-7EO), and large persistent increases (approximately 1000%) in short chain oligomers (NP1-3EO). In the presence of illumination, biodegradation was retarded and heterotrophic bacterial proliferation was inhibited. After 33 days there was complete loss of long chain oligomers (NP9-17EO), incomplete loss of medium chain oligomers (NP6-8EO) and increases in short chain oligomers (NP1-5EO).  相似文献

The endocrine modulating potency of five alkylphenol compounds to fish, including nonylphenol (NP), three nonylphenol ethoxylate mixtures (NP1EO, NP4EO, NP9EO) and one nonylphenol ethoxycarboxylate (NP1EC) was assessed using in vivo tests conducted with Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes). Medaka exposed to test materials from 1 day to 100 days post-hatch were monitored for alterations to sex ratios and secondary sex characteristics and development of gonadal intersex (i.e., testis-ova). The treatment with 100 microg l-1 NP (measured 29 microg l-1) induced gonadal intersex in over 80% of exposed males, mixed secondary sex characteristics in over 40% of exposed fish and suppression of the development of papillae on the anal fin of 100% of males. The 30 microg l-1 NP (measured 8.7 microg l-1) treatment induced gonadal intersex in only one of the 22 exposed males and mixed secondary sex characteristics in approximately 20% of the exposed fish. An elevated incidence of fish with mixed secondary sex characteristics and suppression of papillae development was also observed in the treatment with NP1EO at the highest test concentration of 300 microg l-1 (measured 105 microg l-1). There was no evidence of mixed secondary sex characteristics or gonadal intersex in treatments with the remaining test mixtures. This study confirms that NP is an estrogenic compound that could affect gonadal development in fish chronically exposed to concentrations in the range of 10 microg l-1. NP1EO is very weakly estrogenic at concentrations that are an order of magnitude higher than the lowest observed effect concentration for nonylphenol.  相似文献

Biodegradation of nonylphenol in sewage sludge   总被引:18,自引:0,他引:18
Chang BV  Chiang F  Yuan SY 《Chemosphere》2005,60(11):1652-1659
We investigated the effects of various factors on the aerobic degradation of nonylphenol (NP) in sewage sludge. NP (5 mg/kg) degradation rate constants (k1) calculated were 0.148 and 0.224 day−1 for the batch experiment and the bioreactor experiment, respectively, and half-lives (t1/2) were 4.7 and 3.1 days, respectively. The optimal pH value for NP degradation in sludge was 7.0 and the degradation rate was enhanced when the temperature was increased and when yeast extract (5 mg/l) and surfactants such as brij 30 or brij 35 (55 or 91 μM) were added. The addition of aluminum sulfate (200 mg/l) and hydrogen peroxide (1 mg/l) inhibited NP degradation within 28 days of incubation. Of the microorganism strains isolated from the sludge samples, we found that strain CT7 (identified as Bacillus sphaericus) manifested the best degrading ability.  相似文献

This work presents an LC–MS–MS-based method for the quantitation of nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEOs) and octylphenol ethoxylates (OPEOs) in water, sediment, and suspended particulate matter, and three of their carboxylated derivatives in water. The alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEOs) were analyzed using isotope dilution mass spectrometry with [13C6]-labeled analogues, whereas the carboxylated derivatives were determined by external standard quantitation followed by confirmation using standard additions. The method was used to study APEO’s behavior in a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), where total dissolved NP0-16EO concentration was reduced by approximately 99% from influent (390 μg l−1) to final effluent (4 μg l−1), and total OP0-5EO concentration decreased by 94% from 3.1 to 0.2 μg l−1. In contrast, the carboxylated derivatives were formed during the process with NP0-1EC concentrations increasing from 1.4 to 24 μg l−1. Short-chain APEOs were present in higher proportions in particulate matter, presumably due to greater affinity for solids compared to the long-chain homologues. NP (0.49 μg l−1) and NP0-1EC (4.8 μg l−1) were the only APEO-related compounds detected in a surface water sample from a WWTP-impacted estuary; implying that 90% of the mass was in the form of carboxylated derivatives. Sediment analysis showed nonylphenol to be the single most abundant compound in sediments from the Baltimore Harbor area, where differences in homologue distribution suggested the presence of treated effluent in some of the sites and non-treated sources in the rest.  相似文献

Anthropogenic contaminants like nonylphenols (NP) are added to soil, for instance if sewage-sludge is used as fertilizer in agriculture. A commercial mixture of NP consists of more than 20 isomers. For our study, we used one of the predominate isomers of NP mixtures, 4-(3,5-dimethylhept-3-yl)phenol, as a representative compound. The aim was to investigate the fate and distribution of the isomer within soil and soil derived organo-clay complexes. Therefore, (14)C- and (13)C-labeled NP was added to soil samples and incubated up to 180 days. Mineralization was measured and soil samples were fractionated into sand, silt and clay; the clay fraction was further separated in humic acids, fulvic acids and humin. The organo-clay complexes pre-incubated for 90 or 180 days were re-incubated with fresh soil for 180 days, to study the potential of re-mobilization of incorporated residues. The predominate incorporation sites of the nonylphenol isomer in soil were the organo-clay complexes. After 180 days of incubation, 22 % of the applied (14)C was mineralized. The bioavailable, water extractable portion was low (9 % of applied (14)C) and remained constant during the entire incubation period, which could be explained by an incorporation/release equilibrium. Separation of organo-clay complexes, after extraction with solvents to release weakly incorporated, bioaccessible portions, showed that non-extractable residues (NER) were preferentially located in the humic acid fraction, which was regarded as an effect of the chemical composition of this fraction. Generally, 27 % of applied (14)C was incorporated into organo-clay complexes as NER, whereas 9 % of applied (14)C was bioaccessible after 180 days of incubation. The re-mobilization experiments showed on the one hand, a decrease of the bioavailability of the nonylphenol residues due to stronger incorporation, when the pre-incubation period was increased from 90 to 180 days. On the other hand, a shift of these residues from the clay fraction to other soil fractions was observed, implying a dynamic behavior of incorporated residues, which may result in bioaccessibility of the NER of nonylphenol.  相似文献

The biotransformation of the nonylphenol isomer [ring-U-14C]-4-(3',5'-dimethyl-3'-heptyl)-phenol (4-353-NP, consisting of two diastereomers) was studied in soybean and Agrostemma githago cell suspension cultures. With the A. githago cells, a batch two-liquid-phase system (medium/n-hexadecane 200:1, v/v) was used, in order to produce higher concentrations and amounts of 4-353-NP metabolites for their identification; 4-353-NP was applied via the n-hexadecane phase. Initial concentrations of [14C]-4-353-NP were 1 mg L(-1) (soybean), and 5 and 10 mg L(-1) (A. githago). After 2 (soybean) and 7 days (A. githago) of incubation, the applied 4-353-NP was transformed almost completely by both plant species to four types of products: glycosides of parent 4-353-NP, glycosides of primary 4-353-NP metabolites, nonextractable residues and unknown, possibly polymeric materials detected in the media. The latter two products emerged especially in soybean cultures. Portions of primary metabolites amounted to 19-22% (soybean) and 21-42% of applied 14C (A. githago). After liberation from their glycosides, the primary 4-353-NP metabolites formed by A. githago were isolated by HPLC and examined by GC-EIMS as trimethylsilyl derivatives. In the chromatograms, eight peaks were detected which due to their mass spectra, could be traced back to 4-353-NP. Seven of the compounds were side-chain monohydroxylated 4-353-NP metabolites, while the remaining was a (side-chain) carboxylic acid derivative. Unequivocal identification of the sites of hydroxylation/oxidation of all transformation products was not possible. The main primary metabolites produced by A. githago were supposed to be four diastereomers of 6'-hydroxy-4-353-NP (about 80% of all products identified). It was concluded that plants contribute to the environmental degradation of the xenoestrogen nonylphenol; the toxicological properties of side-chain hydroxylated nonylphenols remain to be examined.  相似文献

The indirect reaction of octylphenol (OP) and nonylphenol (NP) with hydroxyl radicals (*OH) during ozonation was investigated at pH values ranging from 6 to 9. A parameter Rct, representing the ratio of the *OH-exposure to the ozone-exposure, was measured using a method involving a low concentration of p-chlorobenzoic acid as a *OH-probe compound during the ozonation. By assuming that Rct is a constant value at a given pH, the second order rate constants of the alkylphenol reaction with hydroxyl radicals were determined as 1.4(+/-0.2) x 10(10) and 1.1(+/-0.2) x 10(10) M(-1) s(-1) for OP and NP, respectively. The proportions of each alkylphenol degraded by direct molecular ozone reaction and indirect hydroxyl radical reaction were predicted at different pH values. The contribution of indirect *OH reactions with each AP was found to represent over 50% of the total degradation for pH approximately 7, and the contribution increases substantially with pH>7.  相似文献

The biocatalytic elimination of the endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDC) nonylphenol (NP) and bisphenol A (BPA) and the personal care product ingredient triclosan (TCS) by the enzyme preparation from the white rot fungus Coriolopsis polyzona was investigated. Analysis of variance methodology showed that the pH and the temperature are statistically significant factors in the removal of NP, BPA and TCS. The elimination of NP and TCS was best at a temperature of 50 degrees C and the disappearance of BPA at 40 degrees C, whereas the most suitable pH for all three micropollutants was 5. After a 4-h treatment of the three target compounds at concentrations of 5 mg l(-1) all of the NP and BPA were eliminated. In the case of TCS, 65% was removed after either a 4 or an 8-h treatment. The utilisation of 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) in the laccase/mediator system significantly increased the efficiency of the enzymatic treatment. The elimination of NP and BPA was directly associated with the disappearance of the estrogenic activity. Mass spectrometry analysis showed that the enzymatic treatment produced high molecular weight metabolites through a radical polymerization mechanism of NP, BPA and TCS. These oligomers were produced through the formation of C-C or C-O bonds. The polymerization of NP produced dimers, trimers, tetramers and pentamers which had molecular weights of 438, 656, 874 and 1092 amu respectively. The polymerization of BPA produced dimers, trimers and tetramers which had molecular weights of 454, 680 and 906 amu. Finally, the polymerization of TCS produced dimers, trimers and tetramers which had molecular weights of 574, 859 and 1146 amu.  相似文献

Nonylphenol polyethoxylates (NPEOs) are surfactants found ubiquitously in the environment due to widespread industrial and domestic use. Biodegradation of NPEOs produces nonylphenol (NP), an endocrine disruptor. Sewage sludge application introduces NPEOs and NP into soils, potentially leading to accumulation in soils and crops. We examined degradation of NP and nonylphenol-12-ethoxylate (NP12EO) in four soils. NP12EO degraded rapidly (initial half time 0.3-5 days). Concentrations became undetectable within 70-90 days, with a small increase in NP concentrations after 30 days. NP initially degraded quickly (mean half time 11.5 days), but in three soils a recalcitrant fraction of 26-35% remained: the non-degrading fraction may consist of branched isomers, resistant to biodegradation. Uptake of NP by bean plants was also examined. Mean bioconcentration factors for shoots and seeds were 0.71 and 0.58, respectively. Removal of NP from the soil by plant uptake was negligible (0.01-0.02% of initial NP). Root concentrations were substantially higher than shoot and seed concentrations.  相似文献

Bisphenol A (BPA) and nonylphenol (NP) were treated with manganese peroxidase (MnP) and laccase prepared from the culture of lignin-degrading fungi. Laccase in the presence of 1-hydroxybenzotriazole (HBT), the so-called laccase-mediator system, was also applied to remove the estrogenic activity. Both chemicals disappeared in the reaction mixture within a 1-h treatment with MnP but the estrogenic activities of BPA and NP still remained 40% and 60% in the reaction mixtures after a 1-h and a 3-h treatment, respectively. Extension of the treatment time to 12 h completed the removal of estrogenic activities of BPA and NP. The laccase has less ability to remove these activities than MnP, but the laccase-HBT system was able to remove the activities in 6 h. A gel permeation chromatography (GPC) analysis revealed that main reaction products of BPA and NP may be oligomers formed by the action of enzymes. Enzymatic treatments extended to 48 h did not regenerate the estrogenic activities, suggesting that the ligninolytic enzymes are effective for the removal of the estrogenic activities of BPA and NP.  相似文献

The metabolic fate of 14C-phenyl-labeled herbicide clodinafop-propargyl (14C-CfP) was studied for 28 days in lab assays using a sediment–water system derived from a German location. Mineralization was 5.21% of applied 14C after 28 days exhibiting a distinct lag phase until day 14 of incubation. Portions of radioactivity remaining in water phases decreased at moderate rate to 18.48% after 28 days; 62.46% were still detected in water after 14 days. Soxhlet extraction of the sediment using acetonitrile released 35.56% of applied 14C with day 28, while 33.99% remained as non-extractable residues. A remarkable increase of bound 14C was observed between 14 and 28 days correlating with the distinct increase of mineralization. No correlation was found throughout incubation with microbial activity of the sediment as determined by dimethyl sulfoxide reduction. Dissolved oxygen and pH value of water phases remained almost constant for 28 days. Analyses of Soxhlet extracts of the sediment and ethyl acetate extracts of water phases by radio-TLC and radio-HPLC revealed that CfP was rapidly cleaved to free acid clodinafop (Cf), which was further (bio-) transformed. DT50 values (based on radio-HPLC) were below 1 day (CfP) and slightly above 28 days (Cf). Further metabolites were not detected. Fractionation of humic and non-humic components of the sediment demonstrated that CfP's non-extractable residues were predominantly associated with fulvic acids up to 14 days of incubation (3.36%), whereas after 28 days, the majority of radioactivity was found in the humin/mineral fraction (13.30% of applied 14C). Due to high-performance size-exclusion chromatography of the fulvic acids fraction derived from assays incubated for 28 days, this portion of 14C was firmly, possibly covalently bound to fulvic acids and did not consist of CfP or Cf. Using an isolation strategy comprising preincubation of sediment with CfP and mineralization of 14C-CfP as criterion, a microorganism was isolated from the sediment examined. It grew on 14C-CfP as sole carbon source with evolution of 14CO2. The bacterium was characterized by growth on commonly used carbon sources and 16S rDNA sequence analysis. Its sequence exhibited high similarity with that of Nocardioides aromaticivorans strain H-1 (98.85%; DSM 15131, JCM 11674).  相似文献
