Effect of environmental factors on byssal thread formation   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The effects of various factors on byssal thread formation have been examined in the laboratory using Modiolus demissus and Mytilus edulis. With M. demissus thread formation (threads/mussel/h0 and proportion of mussels forming threads decreased with increasing size; prior exposure to air enhanced subsequent thread formation; mechanical agitation reduced thread formation. In addition, low salinity acclimated mussels adapted more rapidly to 32 ppt than high salinity acclimated mussels did to 16 ppt; threads were not formed in the absence of calcium and/or magnesium; and there was no reduction in thread formation at temperatures as high as 27° to 28°C. M. edulis died and thread formation approached zero at temperatures exceeding 26°C.  相似文献

Laboratory experiments have been conducted on byssus thread production by two species of mussel, Mytilus edulis L. and Modiolus modiolus (L.), representing the epibyssate and endobyssate species of the Mytilidae, respectively. Mussels were placed in seven particle sizes of sediment ranging from 50 m to 16 mm for 12 d. The number of byssus threads per mussel, length of threads, number of threads per particle and size of pads were then recorded. Modiolus modiolus (endobyssate) produced more threads than Mytilus edulis (epibyssate). M. edulis produced most threads in the size range 2 to 16 mm and Modiolus modiolus in the size range 500 to 1000 m. M. modiolus produced longer threads than Mytilus edulis. Both species produced longer threads in particle sizes finer than 2 mm. M. edulis produced smaller pads than Modiolus modiolus. Both species produced larger pads in sediments coarser than 1 000 m. Results were also analysed in terms of attachment units (a thread attached to one or more particles, or a particle to which more than one thread is attached). The thread:particle ratio of the attachment units ranged from ca. 1:10 in the finest sediments to ca. 10:1 in the coarsest sediments. Mytilus edulis attached more threads to single particles (72% of attachment units) than Modiolus modiolus (37% of attachment units). M. modiolus had a wider spread of ratios in the finer particle sizes than Mytilus edulis. The significance of our results are discussed in relation to the ecology and palaeoecology of epibyssate and endobysste species.  相似文献

Specimens of Chlamys opercularis, Modiolus modiolus, Mytilus edulis, Crassostrea gigas, Scrobicularia plana and Mya arenaria were exposed to both gradual (sinusoidal) and abrupt (square-wave) salinity fluctuations and measurements made of osmotic, Na+, Mg2+ and Ca2+ concentrations in the hemolymph and where applicable in the mantle fluid. In both sinusoidal and square-wave regimes fluctuating between 100 and 50% seawater (100%=ca. 32 S), the hemolymph Na+, Mg2+, Ca2+ and osmotic concentrations followed the concentrations of the external medium in Chlamys opercularis. The hemolymph and mantle fluid osmotic Na+, Mg2+ and Ca2+ concentrations of Modiolus modiolus, Mytilus edulis, Crassostrea gigas and S. plana followed those of the external medium as long as the molluscs' shell valves remained open. There were no changes in the ionic or osmotic concentrations of the hemolymph or mantle fluid of any of these species during periods of shell-valve closure. The hemolymph osmotic, Na+ and Mg2+ concentrations of wedged-open Modiolus modiolus, Mytilus edulis, C. gigas and S. plana followed those of the external medium. Hemolymph Ca2+ concentrations showed a damped response in C. gigas and Mytilus edulis. The hemolymph osmotic, Na+, Ca2+ and Mg2+ concentrations of Mya arenaria fluctuated in a similar manner to the external medium, but were damped. Wedged-open Mytilus edulis exposed to fluctuating salinity and supplied with a constant supply of 10 mM Ca2+ showed greater changes in hemolymph ionic and osmotic concentrations than M. edulis exposed to the same salinity fluctuation without a constant Ca2+ supply. Chlamys opercularis and Modiolus modiolus survived in a 50% seawater minimum sinusoidal salinity fluctuation for 10 days; wedged-open M. modiolus survived only 3 days. Burrowing had no effect on the osmotic, Na+, Mg2+ or Ca2+ concentrations of the hemolymph of Mya arenaria or S. plana exposed to fluctuating salinities. All of the species studied were shown to be osmoconformers.  相似文献

Gill epithelia of Modiolus modiolus and Mytilus edulis (Baltic and North Seas), and the skin, pharynx and muscles of Branchiostoma lanceolatum (Pallas) have been investigated at the ultrastructural level, employing hydrostatic pressure, to explore the possibility of structural regeneration following decompression. Restoration of all cell structures seems possible to a certain extent, depending on the degree of disintegration and the time period given after decompression. Structural reorganization after release of pressure begins immediately, but no regenerated organelle is comrable with control species, since structural scars remain. Non-reversible destruction to some systems is apparent near the respective LD50-values of the species.  相似文献

Temperature-pressure experiments have been carried out on gill epithelium of Modiolus modiolus and Mytilus edulis (Baltic and North Seas), as well as on the skin, pharynx, and trunk muscles of Branchiostoma lanceolatum (Pallas), employing the technique of pressure fixation. Temperatures of 0°, 5° and 15°C have been combined with pressures up to 800 atm. Low temperature (0°C) intensifies disintegration of ultrastructures by pressure in comparison to 5°C. The highest degree of structural disorganization can be observed at 600 atm and 0°C. Increased temperature (15°C) increases pressure resistance, but the structural difference is more quantitative than qualitative. In pressure experiments, temperature probably affects cell organelles at the molecular level.  相似文献

This study provides information about differences in composition of ingested zooplankton amongst bivalve species coexisting in the same area in a period from May 2009 to December 2010. The study was conducted at the Mali Ston Bay (42°51′ N, 17°40′ E)—the most important bivalve aquaculture area in the eastern Adriatic Sea. Stomach content analysis was performed on cultured species—Ostrea edulis and Mytilus galloprovincialis, and commercially important bivalve species from their natural environment—Modiolus barbatus and Arca noae. Results confirmed carnivory in bivalves, both from natural and cultured populations, but cultured species had higher numbers of zooplankters than those living on the seabed. The most abundant taxa were bivalve larvae, followed by tintinnids, copepods, unidentified eggs and gastropod larvae. Recorded numbers of bivalve larvae in M. galloprovincialis stomach were the highest so far reported and show that mussels impact the availability of natural spat.  相似文献

Temperature, salinity, bottom-sediment type, and zinc concentration all influenced Cd uptake by 4 marine bivalves (Mya arenaria, Mytilus edulis, Mulinia lateralis and Nucula proxima) in short-term static assay systems using 109Cd as a tracer. The experimental system consisted of aquaria containing 20 l of seawater maintained under controlled light and temperature conditions. The water contained either 5 or 20 g/l Cd and tracer. Distribution and kinetics of the metal were monitored in the water column and organisms. The results demonstrate that Cd uptake rates differed widely among the organisms tested. An increase in temperature increased Cd uptake rate by all test organisms. A decrease in salinity increased Cd uptake by all organisms tested. The presence of bottom sediment depresses Cd accumulation in some benthic animals. Zinc in concentrations of 0.5 mg/l substantially decreased Cd uptake by Mytilus edulis and Mulinia lateralis. It is suggested that all important species and environmental variables be considered when studying heavy-metal uptake by marine organisms or when establishing water-quality criteria.  相似文献

Curves relating instantaneous growth rate to aerial exposure were determined for six species of bivalves in laboratory and shore experiments. A dimensionless index equatable with the relative intertidal growth performance of a species was calculated by integration of the growth curve after converting both growth rate and aerial exposure to decimal fractions. Intertidal growth performance of the bivalves tested corresponded well with their natural levels of occurrence on the shore, and improved in the following order: Modiolus modiolus < Argopecten irradians < Ostrea edulis < Mytilus edulis < Crassostrea virginica. Geukensia demissa, for which an index value could not be determined, grew faster intertidally than subtidally. The relative contributions made to intertidal growth performance by energy-conserving and energy-supplementing capacity adaptations were assessed by resolving the growth curves into energy-input and energy-loss components. The rate of energy loss due to intertidal exposure was lower in the high-shore species, and also less affected by harsher subaerial conditions, than in the low-shore species. Moreover, M. edulis and C. virginica showed abilities to supplement energy input such that growth per unit immersion time was better at certain intertidal levels than subtidally. Energy conservation and supplementation in these forms made roughly equal contributions to their improved intertidal growth relative to species occurring lower on the shore.  相似文献

The lack of fundamental data on the abfrontal surface of bivalve gills has prompted a comparative study of cilia and mucocytes on this surface, using scanning electron microscopy and histology on eight species of bivalves, representing seven families and the four major gill types: Mytilus edulis, Modiolus modiolus, Arca zebra, Placopecten magellanicus, Crassostrea virginica, Spisula solidissima, Mercenaria mercenaria, and Mya arenaria. Abfrontal cilia and mucocytes were found in all species studied, with types and densities differing within and between gill types. The three species of homorhabdic filibranchs presented different densities of abfrontal cilia and mucocytes, from very dense in M. edulis to sparse in A. zebra. The heterorhabdic gills had intermediate cilia and mucocyte densities, with highest concentrations of both abfrontal cilia and mucocytes on the principal filaments. The eulamellibranchs showed low ciliary densities together with high mucocyte densities, especially in S. solidissima, where the abfrontal mucocytes were glandular. These results indicate that: (1) the abfrontal surface is a vestigial mucociliary surface; (2) the abfrontal surface cannot participate in water pumping in most species, due to low ciliary densities; and (3) species with high densities of abfrontal mucocytes could utilize abfrontal mucus to reduce drag, especially in the highly fused gills, such as those of the eulamellibranchs. The differing distributions of abfrontal cilia and mucocytes may reflect different selective pressures acting on the gills within the various taxa. The net uptake of zinc by the common mussel Mytilus edulis (L.) has been investigated under different natural and artificial salinity stresses. The effects of stable and fluctuating salinities on the uptake of zinc by the mussel are discussed in terms of three possible modes of action. Under certain highly-stressful conditions, salinity may affect the uptake of zinc by the mussel. This factor should be considered when the mussel is used as an indicator of environmental pollution by zinc in estuarine areas, or spurious conclusions may result.  相似文献

Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) of Mytilus trossulus from the Gulf of Gdansk (southern Baltic) and M. edulis from Swansea Bay, South Wales, UK, collected in 1991, was studied by restriction-enzyme analysis. These two species were more similar to each other in haplotype frequencies than either was to M. galloprovincialis from Britain. M. trossulus resembles M. edulis in having a high frequency of heteroplasmy restricted to males. However, in contrast to M. edulis where restriction-site heteroplasmy predominates, in M. trossulus heteroplasmic individuals possess two genomes which differ in length by up to 3 kilobases.  相似文献

Accumulation of waterborne cadmium in Littorina littorea, Mytilus edulis and Carcinus maenas (collected in 1988 and 1989 around the island of Funen, Denmark) was investigated in a matrix of salinities (10 to 30) and calcium concentrations (2.9 to 8.9 mM Ca++). Cadmium accumulation rates in soft parts of L. littorina, soft parts and shells of M. edulis and whole bodies and exoskeletons of C. maenas decreased with increasing salinity. Changes in the calcium concentrations accounted for 72% of the salinity effect on cadmium accumulation rates in L. littorina, whereas calcium concentrations had little or no effect on cadmium accumulation in M. edulis. Cadmium accumulation in the whole body of C. maenas was affected equally by calcium concentrations and total salinity, whereas accumulation in the exoskeleton was mainly affected by changes in total salinity. Individual variability in cadmium accumulation in the organs of C. maenas was greater than the variation attributable either to changes in ambient calcium concentrations or total salinity. An appreciable amount of the inter-individual variability in the cadmium accumulation in all three species was correlated with wet:dry weight ratios of the tissues and size of the organisms.  相似文献

Patterns of (female) mitochondrial DNA diversity were investigated in the blue mussel Mytilus edulis. Mytilus edulis is a ubiquitous member of contemporary North Atlantic hard-substrate communities and well represented in studies of this region. Mytilus edulis was surveyed in North America and Europe, as well as mid-Atlantic sites in Greenland, Iceland, and the Faroe Islands. Mitochondrial DNA sequences revealed considerable population structure but no monophyly of haplotypes between any major regions. Coalescent analyses suggest that migration across the Atlantic Ocean has prominently been from North American source populations and that Greenland was colonized recently and exclusively from North America. In North America, there was support for two regional groups along the North American coastline. Surprisingly, we also found evidence of recombination between some Mytilus edulis and Mytilus galloprovincialis female mtDNA sequences, particularly in northern Europe. The upper temperature tolerance range for Trichomya hirsuta L. is described for acclimation temperatures of 10° to 32°C at 30% S. Changes in thermal resistance with time are described along with the incipient lethal temperatures. The eurythermicity for the species is 240.7 C°-squared. The ultimate upper incipient lethal temperature is 35.1°C. Definition of the incipient sublethal temperature is given, and is equal to 32°C. Diet effects are shown not to be significant in short-term lethal experiments, but indicate that unfed mussels reduce their resistance after prolonged exposure to high temperatures. Size was also shown to have no effect on resistance and tolerance. A comparison of the tolerance triangle of T. hirsuta with those of the temperate species Mytilus edulis and Mya arenaria revealed that the 24-h LT50 minus 2.2 C° approximates the incipient lethal temperature. The eurythermicities of the temperate species are Mytilus edulis, 363 C°-squared; and Mya arenaria, 415 C°-squared.  相似文献

To test the effect of petroleum hydrocarbons on predation by the seastar Evasterias troschelii (Stimpson, 1862) on the mussel Mytilus edulis (L.), we exposed the predator with the prey to six concentrations of the water-soluble fraction (WSF) of Cook Inlet crude oil. Seastars and mussels were collected at Auke Bay, Alaska, in November 1980. During a 28 d exposure in a flow-through system, seastars were more sensitive to the WSF than mussels: the LC50 for the seastars was 0.82 ppm at Day 19 and, although no mussels were exposed to WSF for more than 12 d, none died. Daily feeding rates (whether in terms of number of mussels seastar-1 d-1 or dry weight of mussels seastar-1 d-1) were significantly reduced at all concentrations above 0.12 ppm. At 0.20, 0.28 and 0.72 ppm WSF, daily feeding rates (in terms of dry weight of mussels) were, respectively, 53, 37, and 5% of the control rate; at the two highest concentrations (0.97 and 1.31 ppm WSF), the seastars did not feed. Seastars at concentrations greater than 0.12 ppm WSF grew slower than individuals from the control group and the 0.12 ppm-treatment group combined. These laboratory results show that E. troschelii is more sensitive to chronic low levels of the WSF of crude oil. The possibility that such oil pollution could reduce predation and permit M. edulis to monopolize the low intertidal zone of southern Alaska remains to be studied.  相似文献

Interactions between period and degree of pressure have been investigated in membrane and filament systems of gill tissue, skin, and muscles of Modiolus modiolus, Mytilus edulis (Baltic and North Seas) and Branchiostoma lanceolatum (Pallas) at the ultrastructural level. The results show the importance of time for the degree of structural disintegration at constant pressure. Destruction already occurs after 2 min of low-pressure treatment at 300 atm. After 10 min continued pressure at the same level, no further structural dis-organization (qualitative or quantitative) occurs, even when the time period is prolonged. For some organelles (i.e., cilia and microvilli), better structural preservation is apparent after 30-min pressure compared to 10-min treatment at the same pressure level. This is a so-called “acclimatisation” to pressure.  相似文献

Rocky intertidal habitats often exhibit high levels of environmental heterogeneity, and the ability of organisms to move between microhabitats is likely to have a profound influence on their rates of mortality and overall fitness. Mussels within the Mytilus edulis complex are morphologically very similar, yet at sites where these species hybridize in southwest England, populations repeatedly show evidence of selection against individuals with alleles specific to M. edulis Linnaeus, in favor of those with alleles specific to M. galloprovincialis Lamarck. Differential movement rates of these two species were examined within simulated mussel beds (gravel substrate) in the winter (February) and summer (July) of 2001. M. edulis-like mussels moved more frequently and more quickly to the exterior of gravel beds than did M. galloprovincialis-like mussels. Coupled with measurements of attachment strength in the field conducted in July 2001, we used a wave force model to examine the probability of dislodgement for each species under a range of water velocities. Results suggest that by preferentially moving to the exterior of beds, M. edulis experiences higher dislodgement rates due to exposure to large hydrodynamic forces than do M. galloprovincialis. As a consequence of lower attachment strengths, M. edulis is also predicted to have higher mortality rates than M. galloprovincialis in interior portions of the bed. Thus, differential movement behavior may contribute to the differential genotype-specific mortality rates observed in the Mytilus spp. hybrid zone in southwest England, and is an example of behavior potentially modifying rates of exogenous selection in an intertidal hybrid zone.Communicated by J.P. Two species of marine mussel, Mytilus edulis and M. galloprovincialis hybridize on the coasts of western Europe. Studies of hybrid mussel populations have shown that natural selection favors M. galloprovincialis-like genotypes within this hybrid zone. Many hypotheses have been proposed to explain differential mortality in these populations. This study tests two hypotheses addressing factors of mortality in a population, and describes yearly energy storage and reproductive cycles of these two species and their hybrids. No evidence was found that the two taxa have different overall levels of reproductive effort or parasite infestation. They do, however, have asynchronous spawning periods and divergent energy storage strategies. In the year of this study, 1993, the M. edulis genotypic class spawned as a group in June and July. After spawning, they built up a high level of mantle energy-storage tissues that are probably used for gametogenesis in the following winter and spring. The M. galloprovincialis genotypic group, however, spawned asynchronously, beginning in June and finishing by August, and did not build up high levels of energy-storage tissues in summer. These results add a temporal component to the interpretation of selective forces acting to shape this hybrid zone. Vulnerability of each species to mortality factors may differ because of their divergent reproductive and energy-storage cycles. Received: 15 January 1999 / Accepted: 26 July 2000  相似文献

The uptake of several species of bacteria by the common mussel Mytilus edulis (L.) and the subsequent fate of some polymers of the bacteria have been investigated in a study carried out during 1981. Bacteria (Escherichia coli, Micrococcus luteus, M. roseus, Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus and a marine pseudomonad, 1-1-1) were radiolabelled by growth in medium containing 3H-thymidine and the uptake of bacteria by Mytilus edulis was monitored. Labelled and unlabelled bacteria, at initial concentrations of 0.5 to 1x107 bacteria ml-1, were cleared at similar, exponential rates with no significant difference in the rates for different bacteria: 90% of bacteria were cleared in a mean time of 1.93±0.12 h (SEM, n=63). Those bacteria with cell walls which were sensitive to M. edulis lysozyme were rapidly degraded by the mussel and 3H-labelled DNA was released in a form not precipitable by 10% trichloroacetic acid. Lysozyme-resistant bacteria (Micrococcus roseus and S. aureus) were cleared from suspension by Mytilus edulis but most were rejected intact. By measuring the rate of release of 3H-thymidine-labelled material from the mussel the rate of degradation of lysozyme-sensitive bacteria by M. edulis was found. For different bacteria the degradation rate varied from approx 2x108 to 27x108 bacteria h-1 with an overall mean of 10x108 bacteria h-1. A thymidine- and diaminopimelicacid-requiring auxotroph of E. coli was radiolabelled with 3H-thymidine, 3H-diaminopimelic acid or 14C-glucose and fed to M. edulis. Bacteria were cleared and degraded by the mussel; 3H-diaminopimelic acid-labelled or 14C-glucose-labelled polymers were retained, whereas 3H-thymidine-labelled polymers were released into the surrounding water. Extracts of the digestive gland of M. edulis degraded lysozyme-sensitive bacteria to release 3H-thymidine-labelled material, but did not release 3H-thymidine-labelled material from lysozyme-resistant bacteria. It is concluded that M. edulis can select lysozymesensitive bacteria for subsequent processing and discriminate between bacterial polymers to reject DNA. Also, bacteria could provide a substantial fraction of the carbon requirement of the mussel.
