The components of 4 major groups of microplankton were identified and their numerical abundance determined in net samples collected at depth intervals down to 600 m at a permanent station off the H. Steinitz Marine Biological Laboratory, Elat. The samples analyzed were collected once a fortnight over a period of 1 year beginning in June 1974. The groups studied were the Cyanophyta, Bacillariophyta and Pyrrhophyta of the phytoplankton and the Tintinnina of the microzooplankton. The pattern of vertical distribution of the phytoplankton as a whole showed a general decrease in cell numbers with increasing depth. The blue-green algae, consisting mainly of Trichodesmium sp. trichomes, were confined primarily to the upper 100 m. The diatoms were unevenly distributed, with one species, a minute centric diatom, Thalassiosira subtilis, associated with a massive bloom during March 1975 between 300 and 400 m. The peridinians, the group with the largest number of species, included forms which were evenly distributed throughout the whole water column and forms limited either to the upper or deeper water strata in accordance with their light intensity preferences. The mass occurrence of newly-emerged dinoflagellate cysts of Pyrophacus horologicum, a weakly-armoured dinoflagellate, in the 200 to 300 m depth interval during April 1975, suggests that reproductive processes in dinoflagellates may also be light-controlled. The tintinnids, like the phytoplankton groups, were most abundant in the upper 100 m with a gradual decrease in numbers of individuals, though not in species, in the deeper water strata. The overall yearly pattern of microplankton distribution indicates 3 peaks: late fall and early summer peaks consisting primarily of blue-green algae and one in early spring consisting of several species of diatoms and peridinians and of species of tintinnids which thrive in the same niches as the phytoplankton. Both phytoplankton and tintinnid production was lowest during the summer months.  相似文献

The distribution of phosphate, nitrate and silicate values obtained from 300 samples and of biomass determined by displacement volume in about 1,900 vertical plankton hauls (65, 200 and 330 m) collected from 8 oceanographic station during 1974–1975 in the Gulf of Aqaba (Elat) are summarized and illustrated by crosssections. Generally, the Gulf is poor in nutrients and the data indicate that it is filled with upper (150 m) Red Sea waters, flowing in over the sill of Tiran. Nutrient content of the upper and deep waters immediately outside the sill are well within the known range of those in the northern Red Sea. Biomass values are relatively low in the Gulf are generally similar to those reported from the northern Red Sea. Both nutrients and biomass values display seasonal and bathymetric variations in the Gulf and outside the sill.  相似文献

Extracts of 22 marine invertebrates were incubated with 29 different carbohydrates, and enzyme spectra estimated from chromatograms. Enzymatic activities were quantified as reducing sugar in 14 of these species. Significant hydrolysis of laminaran, glycogen, and amylose was found in nearly all species, while hydrolysis of oligosaccharides and structural polysaccharides in most cases was weak or absent. The strongest overall degradation of carbohydrates was found among crustaceans. Enzymatic degradation of laminaran shows some relation to food, but the spectra of carbohydrases are not directly predictable from knowledge of natural food sources. Some carbohydrases (sucrase, cellobiase, lactase) could not be explained by ecological considerations. The results indicate that structural polysaccharides are utilized only to a small extent.  相似文献

Seventy-five species of pteropods (20 species), euphausiids (26 spcies), and chaelognaths (29 species) occur in the Gulf of Thailand and the South China Sea. All but one of these species are present in the South China Sea, while only 17 species (7 pteropods, 1 euphausiid, and 9 chaetognaths) are consistently present in the Gulf of Thailand. Abundances of South China Sea species have significant positive rank correlations with depth of water, salinity, and dissolved oxygen and negative correlations with temperature. These species are most abundant in the northern, oceanic, two-thirds of the South China Sea and many of them are vertical migrators or live at depth. Species in the Gulf of Thailand may be divided into two subgroups based on their tolerance for the semi-estuarine environment. Species in the most tolerant subgroup are more abundant within the Gulf of Thailand than in the South China Sea and have significant negative rank correlations with depth of water, salinity, and dissolved oxygen and positive correlations with temperature. The shallow, low-salinity environment of the Gulf is not as favorable for the species of the second sub-group. Rank correlations with depth of water, salinity, temperature, and oxygen are the same in sign but lower in value than for the South China Sea species, and maxisium abundances occur in the 50 to 200 m water depths of the southern third of the South China Sea. Species inhabiting the Gulf of Thailand are mostly non-migrators which are epipelagic even in the open ocean. The proportion of tolerant species diffiers among the major taxonomic groups, reflecting differing adaptive strategies.  相似文献

Desulfobacter sp. (Strain 3ac10), an acetate-utilizing sulphatereducing bacteria, was added to sterile marine pore water spiked with 14C-acetate, and changes in both the natural acetate pool and the added 14C-acetate were measured over time. Initially, both the added 14C-acetate and the chemically measured acetate were rapidly mineralized, but then the rate of removal decreased and a significant amount (approximately 20%) of both 14C-acetate and chemically measured acetate remained unmetabolised. In a replicate experiment, approximately 50% of the acetate was not metabolised. Kinetic analysis of the data indicated that there were two pools of acetate in the original pore water, a biologically available pool (which is rapidly metabolised) and a recalcitrant pool (which is only very slowly metabolised). Addition of 14C-acetate after the biologically available acetate had been removed resulted in rapid removal of the added acetate but no change in the recalcitrant acetate pool. The implications of this data to radiolabelled techniques of measuring in situ acetate turnover are discussed.  相似文献

Investigation on physico-chemical parameters and bacteial characteristics of the coral reef environs of the Gulf of Mannar biosphere reserve was studied. The study found the influence of different physico-chemical parameters on one another and also on the distribution of the total heterotrophic bacteria (THB) in the coral reef areas. Nutrients exhibited considerable seasonal and spatial variations with influence on the bacterial population. Coral reef areas recorded higher bacterial population density both in water (3.5 to 18 x 10(5) CFU ml(-1)) and sediment (1 to 14 x 10(7) CFU g(-1)) samples than the non coral reef areas (3.4 to 10.5 x 10(4) CFU ml(-1) in water and 0.9 to 7 x 10(6) CFU g(-1)). The study also found the dominance of gram negative groups at all the three stations (64.73, 63,5 and 72.59%) with Pseudomonas contributing maximum number of strains in all the samples. In addition Vibrio, Aeromonas, Flavobacterium, Cytophaga, Enterobacter and Alcaligenes were also recorded. The gram positive group was represented by Bacillus, Micrococcus, Arthrobacter and Corynebacterium. The genetic composition of THB isolated from the coral mucus revealed the presence of Vibrio and Micrococcus in all the coral mucus.  相似文献

Three marine diatoms Lauderia annulata Cleve, Odontella sinensis (Greville) Grunow and Thalassiosira rotula Meunier were exposed to ultraviolet (UV) radiation of different wavebands under controlled laboratory conditions (0.035 vol% CO2, 18 °C). Several changes in the patterns of pigments in these organisms were seen depending on the waveband of UV radiation and species examined. UV-B and UV-B plus UV-A radiation led to a reduction in the overall pigment content of all three diatoms. The uptake of 15N-ammonium was less affected by 5-h UV-A (WG 320) but significantly reduced after UV-B and UV-B plus UV-A exposure. The pattern of free amino acid pools varied depending on the applied UV wavebands and the tested diatom. The main protein-bound amino acids of T. rotula decreased after 5-h UV irradiance except leucine. Contents of adenosine 5′-mono-, di-, and triphosphate (AMP, ADP and ATP) were affected differently by UV radiation; ATP values increased at the end of UV-B and UV-B plus UV-A exposure. These results have been discussed with reference to the impact of the different UV sources and the influence on the nitrogen metabolism in connection to pigments and supply with energy. We have measured the photosynthetic assimilation of 14C-carbon dioxide into (1) ethanol-soluble, (2) hot-trichloroacetic acid (TCA)-soluble (polysaccharide), and (3) protein fractions of natural populations of marine phytoplankton. Diurnal studies showed a continuing incorporation of carbon-14 into the protein fraction during hours of darkness. This was accompanied by a concomitant decrease in the proportion assimilated into polysaccharide. When incorporation was measured under constant experimental conditions, the pattern of photosynthesis did not vary from one time of day to another. At one station approximately 12 km south of Boothbay Harbor, the proportion of carbon entering protein showed marked seasonal changes. During the winter, approximately 10 to 20% of the fixed carbon was incorporated into protein. During the summer the value increased to 22 to 35%. Between these times, a transient high value of 37 to 47% of the fixed carbon entering protein coincided with the spring bloom. The increases in proportion incorporated into protein were largely paralleled by equivalent decreases in the polysaccharide fraction. The proportion of carbon incorporated into protein during photosynthesis also increased markedly at reduced light intensities. This increase occurred both when populations were incubated in neutral-density filters and when incubated at increasing depths in the photic zone. There was little consistent and significant difference between the neutral-density filters and depth in the water column, suggesting a minimal role for light quality. The extent of the increased relative rate of protein synthesis at the lower light intensities depended on the nutritional state of the phytoplankton. For example, summer populations from water containing low concentrations of inorganic nutrients responded less dramatically to reduced light intensities than did populations from nutrient-rich waters.  相似文献

Coastal marine ecosystems in many parts of the world are under unrelenting stress caused by urban development, pollutants and other ecological impacts such as building of infrastructure, land reclamation for port and industrial development, habitat modification, tourism and recreational activities. The present work is a first extensive field study using the marine sponge, Sigmadocia fibulata as a bioindicator to detect metal pollution between inshore and offshore environment of the ‘Gulf of Mannar’, India. Samples of S. fibulata were collected from different places of inshore (0.1–0.5?km) and offshore (3–5?kms) locations. Metal concentrations in water and bioaccumulation in sponges were determined by ICP-MS (Inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry). Enrichment of metal contamination was more in the inshore, when compared to offshore environment. Higher concentrations of metals Fe, Al, Ni, Mn, Cu, Cr, Co, Ba, Zn, V, Pb and Cd in inshore waters (3–6.4 times than offshore) may be due to the discharge of monsoonal rains, carrying a discharge of industrial and agricultural wastes and sewage directly into the coast. This is substantiated by a highly significant positive correlation between concentrations of metals in the water and accumulation in sponges. The bioaccumulation of metals in sponge tissue were in order of Fe?>?Al?>?Ni?>?Mn?>?Cu?> Cr?>?Co?>?Ba?>?Zn?>?V?>?Cd?>?Pb in both the inshore and offshore regions. Apparently, the macromolecule composition (sugars, proteins and lipids) was significantly reduced by the accumulation of metals in inshore sponges. The current findings indicated that the frequent monitoring is necessary to assess the eco-health of the marine environment by choosing bio-indicator species like S. fibulata, which provide accurate, reliable measurements of environmental quality.  相似文献

A series of field surveys were carried out on two permanent pools of the upper Glenelg River in SW Victoria, Australia. One was representative of the wider and deeper pools while the other was representative of the more-narrow and shallower pools. Both pools showed a typical seasonal cycle of warm, brackish, oxygen-poor, summer conditions and cool, oxygen-rich, low-salinity, winter conditions. The summer salinity increases were larger than expected, suggesting possible saline groundwater inflow from unidentified springs. Both pools contained anoxic water in their deeper sections but this was permanent only in the deeper pool. A simple model of the flushing rate of such anoxic pools subject to flows, such as environmental flow releases, was developed, based on an energy balance between the potential energy required to lift the anoxic layer and the kinetic energy derived from the river flow. The results were tested against and in agreement with the field measurements. The model also suggests that the anoxic layers are resilient to all but the largest environmental flows.  相似文献

Relationships among populations (southeast Atlantic and northern Gulf coast, USA) of a ubiquitous, estuarine, harpacticoid copepod (Microarthridion littorale Poppe) were estimated using sequence data from two loci: one mitochondrial [cytochrome b (Cyt b)] and one nuclear [first internal transcribed spacer of ribosomal DNA (ITS-1)]. Copepods were collected from seven estuaries in 1997/98. Allelic phylogenies based on both genes were generally concordant, and suggested that M. littorale populations are structured over large geographic scales (hundreds of kilometers). Three well-supported groups were found in both gene trees comprising clades of alleles sampled from South Carolina, Florida, and Louisiana. Alleles from the Savannah, Georgia sample formed a monophyletic group using the Cyt b data, but this clade was not distinguishable with comparable ITS-1 data. The green alga Botryococcus protuberans was isolated from its natural environment and its morphology under different cultural conditions was examined. The alga was characterized by a high starch content and reddish oil drops as the assimilatory products. Photosynthetic pigments, Chl a, Chl b, carotenoids and xanthophylls are present. Modification of environmental conditions in modified Chu-10 medium resulted in optimum growth of the alga. Fatty acid composition revealed palmitic acid being the major component, while lauric acid, myristic acid and stearic acid were found in less quantity.  相似文献

Much is still to be learned about the spatial ecology of foraging marine turtles, especially for juveniles and adult males which have received comparatively little attention. Additionally, there is a paucity of ecological information on growth rates, size and age at maturity, and sex ratios at different life stages; data vital for successful population modelling. Here, we present results of a long-term (2002–2011) study on the movements, residency, growth and sex ratio of loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) in Amvrakikos Gulf (39°0′N 21°0′E), Greece, using satellite telemetry (N = 8) and ongoing capture–mark–recapture (CMR; N = 300 individuals). Individuals encountered at sea ranged from large juvenile to adult (46.2–91.5 cm straight carapace length) and demonstrated growth rates within published norms (<2.7 cm yr?1) that slowed with increasing body size. We revealed that an unexpectedly high proportion of animals were male (>44 % of captures above 65 cm straight carapace length), compared to region-wide female-biased hatchling production, indicating sex-biased survival or possible behavioural drivers for likelihood of capture in the region. Satellite tracking confirmed that some turtles establish discrete, protracted periods of residency spanning more than 1 year, whilst others migrated away from the site. These findings are underlined by CMR results with individual capture histories spanning up to 7 years, and only 18 % of individuals being recaptured.  相似文献

Molluscs inhabiting littoral rocks were collected from 43 stations around Ceylon, and 57 species belonging to 20 families were identified. An account is given of the nature and distrbution of littoral rocks around the island, and the stations examined. On each shore, the distribution of the molluscs was studied in relation to the broad zonation of the shores themselves and observations were made on plant and animal associations of each speices. The limits of the broad zones of the shores were defined with reference to biological indicators. Analysis of the data collected led to a classification of the rocky shores into three groups, each characterized by particular combinations of mollusc species and distinct patterns of shore zonation. Some molluscs were found to be distributed over the whole island, others to be common to two groups of shores only, and still others to be confined to a single shore type. An attempt has been made to explain the presence or absence of species on various groups of shores, and to explain discontinuities in distribution on the basis of environmental factors such as the nature of the substratum, degree of wave exposure, and weed cover. A key, based primarily on external features, has been devised for the identification of the species listed.  相似文献

Collection and culture of the large lobate ctenophore Mnemiopsis mccradyi Mayer is described, including the requirements for successful development of larvae. Particular attention must be given to the collection of these delicate animals, the handling and provision of live microzooplankton of suitable size for the larvae, and the provision of food densities for the adults which neither stimulate “wasteful” feeding nor limit their growth. Although these ctenophores will ingest detritus and algal cells in high concentration, they lost weight at the same rate as starved individuals unless provided with living zooplankton. Under optimum conditions, specimens would lay eggs within 13 days of their own birth. By the 17th day they laid eggs daily, and had produced an average of 8,000 eggs within 23 days after birth. The maximum number of eggs laid by a single wild individual within 24 h after being brought into the laboratory was 10,000. Their high fecundity, rapid generation time, and ability to self-fertilize help to explain their sudden appearance in bloom proportions at periods of high food concentration in the environment, often referred to in the literature.  相似文献

We analysed fisheries trends in the northern region of the Gulf of California, within the Biosphere Reserve of the Upper Gulf of California and Colorado Delta River and the Vaquita Refuge Area, and suggest measures to protect the vaquita, Phocoena sinus. We compiled and analysed catch reports of artisanal fishermen in the three fishing communities of the Upper Gulf of California (San Felipe in the State of Baja California, and Golfo de Santa Clara and Puerto Peñasco in the State of Sonora) from 1995 to 2007. This information was categorised with respect to geographic information systems, and all fishing sites within two marine protected areas in the region were identified. In addition, from a survey based on direct interviews with artisanal fishermen in each of the three ports, we identified that 23% of fishermen will continue fishing despite on-going fishing buy-out programmes in the region. We suggest several specific courses of action to decrease the fishing impact on this critically endangered cetacean. However, given the critical situation of this critically endangered species, it is very uncertain whether enforcing a no-take zone within the biosphere reserve and the Vaquita Refuge Area, or even a wider fishing moratorium, will be enough to save this endangered species from extinction.  相似文献

Samples of the deep-sea spinulosan asteroid Hymenaster membranaceus Wyville Thomson were collected in a timeseries of 19 bottom trawls spanning the period April 1978 to October 1981 from a 2200 m-deep station in the northern Rockall Trough. The reproductive biology of this species was studied from histological sections of the gonad, and compared with that of H. gennaeus H. L. Clark which was collected in the same hauls. At first sexual development, oogonia develop in nests surrounded by small accessory cells. Previtellogenic oocytes remain in the periphery but, at maturity, oocytes ranging up to 1 100 m fill the ovary. A variety of accessory cells pack the lumen and may be nutritive or degenerative. It appears that a small number of oocytes are spawned intermittently, but there is no evidence of overproduction and break-down of superfluous oocytes. A few large oocytes become senescent and undergo internal break-down, releasing periodic acid Schiff-positive material into the lumen. Size-frequencies of oocytes indicate that eggs may be spawned as a continuous slow release, and there is no evidence of reproductive synchrony between or within samples. On reaching maturity, males appear always to be ready to release spermatozoa. Spawning is probably stimulated by egg release during chance encounters with mature females. There is no evidence for brooding, and from the large size and yolky nature of the egg direct lecithotrophic development at or near the seabed is inferred. A limited histological study of H. gennaeus indicates that egg production is very similar, but the two species differ in the nature of the accessory cells and amorphous material filling the lumen.  相似文献

The Earth’s greatest living space is found in the bathypelagic zone of the oceans (depths >1,000 m), yet little research has been dedicated to these ecosystems. The micronekton of the bathypelagic zone in the eastern Gulf of Mexico (EGOM) was investigated with the goal of comparing its community structure with that of the well-studied mesopelagic micronekton. Herein is described a portion of that community, specifically species belonging to the orders Lophogastrida, Mysida, and Decapoda. A total of 46 species were collected, most of which have broad zoogeographic distributions. Seventeen of the species had not previously been collected above 1,000 m in the same location despite over 20 years of sampling. Compared to the mesopelagic zone, the bathypelagic community showed increased contributions to abundance and estimated biomass from the Oplophoridae and Eucopiidae, with a simultaneous decrease in the importance of the Dendrobranchiata. In addition, the bathypelagic zone was distinguished by a relatively high percentage of individuals that brood their eggs (77% vs. 15% in the mesopelagic zone). The results are interpreted as evidence that the bathypelagic zone contains a distinct pelagic community, with a biology and ecology fundamentally different from that of the mesopelagic zone.  相似文献
