Otolith increment age estimates for a deepwater species, Allocyttus verrucosus, were validated by comparison with the results from 210Pb:226Ra radiometric analysis. Transverse sectioning and subsequent grinding of otoliths to a thickness of 0.2 mm revealed increments which provided age estimates for a range of fish sizes. Age estimates ranged from 7 yr for an immature fish of 15.2 cm total length (TL) to 130 yr for a female fish of 36.5 cm TL. Age at maturity was estimated as 28 yr for females and 24 yr for males. In comparison, radiometric analysis of whole otoliths, using a single linear otolith-mass growth-rate model suggested maximum ages of 130 to 170 yr for fish of 34 to 35 cm TL. Radiometric ages were also recalculated using a two-phase otolith-mass growth-rate model in which the growth rate was assumed to slow after maturity to 90% of the pre-maturity rate. This reduced the maximum age to 132±15 yr for a mean fish length of 34.5 cm. Age at maturity for females was estimated at 34 yr. The similarity between age estimates from otolith-increment counts and radiometric analysis strongly supports the accuracy of results from both methods, and encourages further use of such comparisons as an alternative to traditional validation techniques.  相似文献

The use of otolith chemistry as a tool for analysing the biology of fishes assumes that the procedures used to collect and prepare otoliths for analysis do not alter their composition. With otoliths of Nemadactylus macropterus, Hoplostethus atlanticus, and Rhombosolea tapirina, we show that this assumption is not valid for the elements that can be detected using electron-probe microanalysers (those present at concentrations greater than ≃100 parts per million): all six elements routinely measured using these techniques were affected by at least one post-mortem procedure tested. Measured concentrations of calcium and strontium were relatively insensitive to most procedures tested, whereas concentrations of sodium, potassium, sulphur and chlorine were affected substantially by many commonly used procedures. The ease with which otolith composition could be modified post-mortem suggests that apparent geographic, habitat-specific or ontogenetic differences in otolith composition should be interpreted with extreme caution because of easily induced artefacts and the problem of pseudo-replication associated with the ways otoliths are sampled and prepared for analysis. Since 2007, the ecosystem of the Gulf of Lions has shifted to a different regime, characterised by a low anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) and sardine (Sardina pilchardus) biomass and a remarkably high sprat (Sprattus sprattus) biomass. Surprisingly, the abundance and recruitment of anchovy and sardine remained high. To understand which processes (bottom-up or top-down control, etc.) could have caused this shift, we studied the changes in body condition, growth and size and age of anchovy, sardine and sprat over 1984–1985 and 1992–2012, using data from scientific surveys. The annual age structure of anchovy and sardine was estimated using Bayesian mixture models based on size frequency data with priors on the age–length relationship derived from independent otolith readings. The results indicated periods during which anchovy and sardine were in an average (1992–2004), good (2005–2007) or poor (2008–2012) overall state of condition. For sardine, the shift towards smaller fish observed during these past 4 years was explained by a combination of slower growth and the disappearance of older individuals (ages 2+). Despite the increase in biomass of sprat since 2008, indications were found that sprat was also smaller than in the past. As growth and condition decreased and overexploitation has not been documented or suspected for those three species in this area, we propose that the current decline in sardine and anchovy biomass could be due to qualitative and/or quantitative modifications in the planktonic production (i.e. a bottom-up control) or mass mortalities of adults due to an epidemic disease.  相似文献

The otoliths of the King George whiting Sillaginodes punctata were assessed for their usefulness in adult-ageing. Whole, transverse-sectioned and broken/burnt sagittae displayed alternating opaque and translucent zones. Some small whole otoliths contained accessory areas of pigment, whilst large otoliths were too thick to transmit light, resulting in ambiguous counts in each case. Both marginal-increment analysis and treatment of fish with tetracycline demonstrated that the first three opaque zones formed annually, the first during the spring/summer of the second year of life, and the second and third in each subsequent spring. Otolith thickness increased linearly with the completion of each new opaque/translucent zone. An ageing protocol based on whole otoliths, supplemented with the breaking/burning of ambiguous otoliths is recommended. An algorithm for calculating age in months from otolith counts based on a fixed birth-date of the mid-point of the spawning season is presented. Juvenile Ambassis vachelli, 40 to 50 d old, were used to test the effects of starvation and recovery-feeding on the widths of otolith increments. Three laboratory treatments (fed continuously; fed for 9d then starved for 15 d; starved for 9 d then fed for 15 d), were compared. Fish were also collected throughout the experiment from a field site to assess the natural fluctuations of increment widths. Growth, starvation and recovery were reflected in the widths of otolith increments. The width of increments deposited during starvation were similar in all fish, regardless of prior feeding history, despite the lower mortality recorded in starved fish with a history of intense feeding. Increment-width data were confounded by an ontogenetic decrease in increment widths with age. The results indicate that starvation and recovery are recorded in the increment widths of otoliths and are distinguishable from the effects of ontogenetic development. However, ontogenetic changes in the width of otolith increments confounded the interpretation of otolith-increment series. Therefore, the ontogenetic pattern of otolith increments must be known for each species before valid interpretation of otolith microstructure is possible.  相似文献

Otolith growth during metamorphosis and some aspects of the early life history of conger eel (Conger myriaster) were determined as indicated from microstructure in otoliths of the leptocephali collected from Cheonsu Bay, Korea during May and June 1988. The leptocephali occurred from early May to late June in the study area. Larvae collected in early May were in the late leptocephalus stage, and the proportion of the metamorphosing leptocephali increased over time. Otoliths in the late leptocephalus stage showed a translucent zone only. Although the fish did not feed and the body length diminished during metamorphosis, the otolith continued to grow and, consequently, the opaque zone was formed outside the translucent zone. The inner translucent zone can be considered a leptocephalus zone, and the outer opaque zone a metamorphic zone. Assuming that the growth increments were deposited daily from hatching, the conger eel can be considered to have hatched between September and February. The number of increments in the inner hyaline zone ranged from 124 to 239, and was assumed to represent the number of days from hatching to the onset of metamorphosis. The duration of metamorphosis was estimated as 51 to 75 d based on the number of increments in the opaque zone at the end of the metamorphic stage.  相似文献

 Territorial Parma microlepis (Günther) (Pomacentridae) were collected at different depths, at three sites in each of four estuaries near Sydney, Australia. Element concentrations were measured by induc- tively-coupled–plasma mass spectrometry. Significant differences in concentrations of Mn and Ba were found in the otoliths of fish sampled in different depth strata, with concentrations generally greatest in fish found in water <4 m deep. Depth-related differences varied among estuaries (e.g. 0 to 1.2 μg Ba g−1 otolith). In most estuaries there was a negative linear relationship between concentrations of Mn and Ba in otoliths and actual depth. Great variation was found within an estuary among sites separated by 0.5 to 3 km. In the eye lenses, concentrations of Rb differed according to depth of capture of fish. The age of fish (1+ to 34 yr) had no influence on the concentrations of elements in otoliths or lenses. Multivariate comparisons of elemental composition (= fingerprints) detected significant differences among depth strata. Fish collected from shallow water had the clearest multivariate classification according to depth. There was a close match between our shallow strata and the average depths reached by low-salinity/high-temperature estuarine plumes. The element composition of whole otoliths and lenses represents average concentrations experienced by the fish. The temporal resolution of differences in ambient conditions is likely to be coarse in the fish (i.e. months to years). Received: 9 April 1999 / Accepted: 29 February 2000  相似文献

Allometry was used for monitoring aboveground growth of the marine angiosperm Zostera marina L. Dry weight was regressed with leaf length and width, allowing estimation of aboveground net productivity and biomass of individual plants. At the termination of the experiment, rhizome productivity of the same plants was determined by harvesting. Plants in shaded and unshaded seawater tanks were monitored from June until September, 1976; in situ plants were also monitored at Point Judith Pond, Rhode Island, USA. Unshaded plants had shorter leaves, a lower net productivity, lower biomass, and a lower aboveground-torhizome productivity ratio than shaded plants. Unshaded plants had a higher rate of rhizome branching and the resulting new shoot formation than in situ plants.  相似文献

Microstructure of settlement-marks in the otoliths of tropical reef fishes   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6  
The morphology and ultrastructure of the otolith settlement-mark was examined in 44 tropical reef-fish species spanning nine families. A classification scheme based on similar otolith characteristics is presented. Three major categories are identified based on changes in increment width and optical qualities of the settlement-mark. Of the 44 species examined, 39 possessed “abrupt” settlement-marks (Type I) characterised by a rapid decrease in increment width (up to 50% reduction) over settlement. Type I settlement-marks were found in all nine families examined. The 39 species spanned the whole range of possible larval durations (Pomacentrus moluccensis, 15 d ± 0 SE; Naso hexacanthus, 91.2 d ± 2.97 SE). Four of the 44 species possessed “zonal” settlement-marks (Type II), featuring a band of increments that are wider than pre-settlement increments. Species in this category are the labrids Corisaygula, Thalassoma bifasciatum, T. lunare and an unidentified acanthurid (Acanthurus sp. 2). One species of acanthurid (N. brevirostris) possessed a “gradual” settlement-mark (Type III), manifest as a gradual decrease in increment width during the settlement period. A possible fourth type was identified from the literature. Gnatholepis thompsoni and Coryphopterus glaucofraenum possessed a settlement-mark with increment widths that increased post-settlement. Available data suggest a poor relationship between the structure of the settlement-mark and the magnitude of metamorphosis (previously reported as internal and external morphological change). Evidence suggests that the increment profile over early development and the increment transitions associated with the settlement event are taxon-specific and may enable late-larval stage fishes to be identified to species level. The subsurface resistivity layer parameters of 47 vertical geoelectrical soundings are analyzed for a rectangle shaped area of 70 km2 from the Gulf of Aqaba coast. For this purpose, the Dar-Zarrouk parameters i.e., (i) total longitudinal unit conductance, (ii) total transverse unit resistance and (iii) average longitudinal resistivity are used to determine the resistivity regime of the water bearing formations. The significance of these parameters is to establish a vision about the occurrence and distribution of water bodies, while dealing with complicated situations of resistivity ranges intermixing for saline, brackish and fresh water aquifers. The results obtained from the study area suggest that the Dar-Zarrouk parameters proved useful in providing confident solution to delineate water-bearing formations. The behavior of the Dar-Zarrouk parameters and its patterns in space over large areas with respect to the occurrence of water aquifer systems in the deltaic coastal area has been demonstrated.  相似文献

RNA-DNA ratio: an index of larval fish growth in the sea   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Data on water temperature, RNA-DNA ratio, and growth of eight species of temperate marine fish larvae reared in the laboratory were fit to the equation: $$G_{pi} = 0.93{\text{ }}\operatorname{T} + 4.75{\text{ RNA - DNA}} - 18.18$$ where Gpi is the protein growth rate in % d-1 and T is the water temperature. Water temperature and larval RNA-DNA ratio explained 92% of the variability in growth rate of laboratory-reared larvae. The model is useful over the entire range of feeding levels (starvation to excess), temperatures (2° to 20°C) and fish species studied. Estimates of recent growth of larval cod, haddock, and sand lance caught at sea based on water temperature and RNA-DNA ratio ranged from negative to 26% d-1. These data demonstrate the importance of food availability in larval fish mortality and suggest that short-term growth under favorable conditions may be considerably higher than expected from long-term indicators. RNA-DNA ratio analysis offers new possibilities for understanding larval growth and mortality, and their relation to environmental variability.  相似文献

酸雨是全球关注的重大环境污染问题之一,中国亦继西欧和北美之后,成为当今世界第三大酸雨区。光合作用是植物生物量和作物经济产量形成的生理基础,叶绿素荧光常用来判断逆境胁迫对植物光合作用造成的伤害。有研究表明,酸雨会对植物叶绿素荧光造成影响,然不同生长阶段植物对逆境的抵抗能力亦存在差异,采用模拟酸雨(酸雨 pH 值梯度为4.5、3.5、2.5)或模拟天然降水持续胁迫(每隔3天喷施1次)水稻(Oryza sativa)(从幼苗期至灌浆期),利用原位无损伤叶绿素荧光测定技术(德国Walz公司PAM-210脉冲调制式荧光仪)分别探测和分析幼苗期、分蘖期、孕穗期和灌浆期水稻叶片(处理组和对照组),研究酸雨对全生育期水稻叶绿素荧光的影响,相关研究未见报道。结果表明,与CK相比,pH 4.5酸雨使幼苗期和孕穗期初始荧光(Fo)显著提高了7.69%、8.84%,使幼苗期、分蘖期和孕穗期非光化学猝灭参数(qN)显著提高了8.64%、4.86%、6.09%,使幼苗期和孕穗期最大光化学量子产量(Fv/Fm),PSII电子传递速率(ETR),实际原初光能捕获效率(ΦPSII),光化学猝灭参数(qP)显著降低,幼苗期、孕穗期降幅依次为Fv/Fm(3.01%、6.88%)、ETR(8.40%、10.24%)、ΦPSII(8.39%、12.23%)、qP(3.79%、12.55%);pH 3.5、pH 2.5酸雨不同程度地显著降低了各生育时期Fv/Fm、ETR、ΦPSII、qP,幼苗期和孕穗期qN,显著提高了各生育时期Fo,且随酸雨pH值降低,变化幅度增大。同时,pH 4.5或pH 3.5酸雨持续胁迫下,水稻受到伤害大小规律为灌浆期&lt;幼苗期&lt;分蘖期&lt;孕穗期;pH 2.5酸雨持续胁迫下,水稻受到伤害大小规律为分蘖期<幼苗期<灌浆期<孕穗期。总之,酸雨胁迫强度与水稻叶绿素荧光参数存在剂量-效应关系,酸雨持续胁迫会对不同生育时期水稻光合作用造成影响,并且不同生育时期水稻光合作用对酸雨胁迫敏感性存在差异,这些是评价酸雨胁迫对植物影响时需考虑因素。  相似文献

Despite the vast amount of research on threatened and endangered green turtle populations, some uncertainty regarding stage durations, growth rates, and age at maturation remains. We used skeletochronology to address this gap in knowledge for green turtle populations in the North Atlantic Ocean that use coastal waters along the southeastern U.S. as developmental habitat. Oceanic stage duration was estimated at 1–7 years ( [`(\textX)] \overline{\text{X}}  = 3 years). Several growth models, including von Bertalanffy, logistic, Gompertz, and power functions were evaluated for describing sex-specific length-at-age data. Ages at maturation estimated using mean size at nesting for females from each genetic sub-population contributing juveniles to this neritic foraging area were 44 years (Florida), 42.5 years (Costa Rica), and 42 years (Mexico), which were higher than previously reported ages. This implies that nesting populations comprising primarily individuals utilizing foraging grounds in the southeastern U.S. may take longer to recover than previously estimated.  相似文献

The transparent goby Aphia minuta (Risso, 1810) is one of the main target species of the small-scale fishery off the Island of Majorca. Otolith microstructure and length-frequency analysis were used to study the age and growth of this species during the 1982/1983 and 1992/1993 fishing seasons. Daily periodicity of increment formation was determined by experiments with marked otoliths in individuals maintained in captivity. The length range of the catches during the 11 yr period was between 12 and 49 mm, with a main distribution (89%) between 24 and 40 mm. Otolith age-readings indicate that the population exploited in the commercial fishery consists of seven age-groups (2 to 8 mo old), with a very high proportion of individuals (95%) between 3 and 6 mo old. Population growth-curves revealed no differences between males and females. The growth parameters for the whole population are: asymptotic length, L = 53.69 mm; growth coefficient, K = 2.23 yr−1; theoretical age at length zero, t 0 = −0.005 yr. There is a dearth of information regarding the changes in heart muscle metabolites induced by pesticides. In the present study, the gobiid fish, Glossogobius giuris, was exposed to sub lethal concentrations of (0.05, 0.25 and 0.5 ppm) organophosphorus pesticide, malathion for short duration (24 to 96 hr). The cardiac muscles showed maximum depletion of glycogen and cholesterol content during 72 and 96 hr after treatment with 0.5 ppm malathion. Whereas a slight fluctuation of protein and glycogen content was observed in low concentration (0.05 ppm) of malathion. The levels of protein showed a significant decrease at high concentration (0.5 ppm) when treated for longer duration (96 hr). The present study reports metabolic dysfunction in response to malathion toxicity in the fish.  相似文献

通过显微镜、扫描电镜以及微量化学成分分析,对现代瓣鳃类粗饰蚶、花蛤和腹足类纺锤螺,第三纪美壳螺,三叠纪克氏蛤,石炭一二叠纪燕海扇,泥盆纪云南贝、颠石燕,奥陶纪震旦角石、赫南特贝等贝壳生长纹层进行了综合研究。结果表明,奥陶纪以来贝壳生长纹层具有年、半年、双周、日、半日生长周期的变化,年中所含双周生长纹层数、双周所含日生长纹数均呈递减的趋势。通过观测计算得出:奥陶纪每年的日数为415.69d,泥盆纪为407.1d,石炭一二叠纪为400.51d,三叠纪为393.98d,第三纪为374.13d,第四纪为367.4d,表明白奥陶纪以来有地球自转速度变慢、地月距离增大、月球后退速率减小等变化趋势,  相似文献

A captive population of Australian red-claw crayfish, Cherax quadricarinatus, of known age was used for the study. Lipofuscin concentration in the left olfactory lobe cell mass of the brain was measured using image analysis of fluorescence micrographs. Age predictions based on lipofuscin concentration were more accurate and had narrower 95% confidence limits than those derived from the more conventional body size and weight predictors for all age groups tested (180, 300, 420, 780 d). Overall, use of lipofuscin concentration produced a significantly lower (p0.001) mean age-prediction error (16.65%) than use of carapace length or body weight (32.45 and 32.3%, respectively). Carapace length was of little value for prediction of the age of older individuals. Mathematical models defining the relationships between temperature, age and lipofuscin accumulation were derived from laboratory-reared individuals. These models did not describe adequately the course of lipofuscin accumulation in crayfish from the field over the whole lifespan. Field data from three known year-classes were used to generate simulated size-frequency and lipofuscin concentration-frequency histograms. Year-classes in the lipofuscin concentration frequency-histogram were much more easily distinguished than in the size-frequency histogram. Under field conditions, lipofuscin concentration was a better predictor of chronological age than conventional morphometric measures.  相似文献

Large‐scale infrastructure projects commonly have large effects on the environment. The planned construction of the Nicaragua Canal will irreversibly alter the aquatic environment of Nicaragua in many ways. Two distinct drainage basins (San Juan and Punta Gorda) will be connected and numerous ecosystems will be altered. Considering the project's far‐reaching environmental effects, too few studies on biodiversity have been performed to date. This limits provision of robust environmental impact assessments. We explored the geographic distribution of taxonomic and genetic diversity of freshwater fish species (Poecilia spp., Amatitlania siquia, Hypsophrys nematopus, Brycon guatemalensis, and Roeboides bouchellei) across the Nicaragua Canal zone. We collected population samples in affected areas (San Juan, Punta Gorda, and Escondido drainage basins), investigated species composition of 2 drainage basins and performed genetic analyses (genetic diversity, analysis of molecular variance) based on mitochondrial cytb. Freshwater fish faunas differed substantially between drainage basins (Jaccard similarity = 0.33). Most populations from distinct drainage basins were genetically differentiated. Removing the geographic barrier between these basins will promote biotic homogenization and the loss of unique genetic diversity. We found species in areas where they were not known to exist, including an undescribed, highly distinct clade of live bearing fish (Poecilia). Our results indicate that the Nicaragua Canal likely will have strong impacts on Nicaragua's freshwater biodiversity. However, knowledge about the extent of these impacts is lacking, which highlights the need for more thorough investigations before the environment is altered irreversibly.  相似文献
