The influence of temperature upon sulphide formation was investigated with sediment sulphureta incubated at constant temperatures in the laboratory. The concentrations of sulphate, sulphide and pyrite were periodically measured and it was found that, in addition to a decrease in the rate of sulphide formation with temperature, there was a changes in the origin of the sulphide. Thus, at 5° and 10°C, the majority of sulphide originated from organic sulphur, while sulphate contributed the greater proportion of the sulphide at 20° and 30°C. Such changes presumably reflect those in the natural enviroment during winter and summer.  相似文献

The zinc, cadmium, copper and lead release from the uncontaminated and contaminated coastal sediments with aerated sea water was studied. the metals transfer to the dissolved forms was monitored during one-two months by differential pulse anodic voltammetry (DPASV). the sediments with different initial degree of contamination were sampled in the Peter the Great Bay, Sea of Japan around Vladivostok-the biggest city in Russian Far East. Sediment contamination by metals led to increased release to solution of zinc due to sulphide oxidation and cadmium on account of organic matter decomposition. the copper behaviour was complicated by strong binding with organic matter and enhancements of copper release can only be seen in sediment with a low organic matter content. Significant lead transfer to dissolved forms was not observed regardless of sediment contamination. the temperature affected the release of cadmium and copper through enhanced organic matter destruction. the dissolved metal fluxes from the sediment transformation are compared with metal fluxes towards bottom. Such comparisons show that second contamination by dissolved metals of the studied coastal environment may be important for cadmium only.  相似文献

Microbial activity in the gut of the detrivore irregular sea urchin Echinocardium cordatum (Pennant) was studied by measurements of oxygen profiles, fermentation end products, C/N ratios, pH and concentrations of sulphide and sulphate in the gut segments, including the nodules of the intestinal caecum. The highest oxygen flux and consumption, and highest concentrations of short-chained fatty acids, and the lowest pH values occurred in the anterior stomach segments, including the anterior caecum. The C/N ratios indicate synthesis of microbial biomass in the caeca. The concentration of sulphate was high in the anterior stomach segments, whereas sulphide was only detectable in the nodules of the intestinal caecum. The anterior and intestinal caeca were the major sites for microbial activity, and oxidation of acetate and propionate produced in the two caeca corresponded to at least 9% of the total respiration of the sea urchin. Microbial fermentation, especially in the anterior caecum, seems to be important for the metabolism of E. cordatum, allowing the sea urchin to utilise refractile carbohydrates. The functions of the intestinal caecum are probably both residual fermentation and oxidation of accumulated sulphide. Received: 25 February 1998 / Accepted: 30 June 1998  相似文献

Laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate the survival rate of Monoporeia affinis in sulphide-rich sediment with oxic overlying water, and the effect of amphipod bioturbation on sulphide and oxygen profiles. As long as the oxygen content in the water is high, the amphipods seem to avoid quite high concentrations (>200 μmol l−1) of sulphide in the sediment by creating microhabitats where sulphide is rapidly oxidised. In cores with amphipods, a decrease of sulphide concentration was found in upper layers, while an increase of sulphide was found in deeper layers. Aggregation of amphipods generated pockets of light-brown sediment, characterised by high oxygen concentrations and no sulphide, and their depth was clearly dependent on amphipod density. This indicates that M. affinis has a potential to recolonise sulphide-rich sediments, devoid of macroscopic life, after the overlying water column has become oxygenated. Although Lebanon has abundant water, its rivers are polluted and aquifer water mismanaged. Effective river water usage requires an understanding of the geochemistry of polluting metals in catchments. Climate is “Mediterranean”: wet winters and dry summers. Active sediment flushing is restricted to winter high discharge episodes. Except in winter, water column pollutants are removed by precipitation or sorption to the surface of static bed sediments. Hence (1) does winter flushing of contaminated sediment and replacement by clean sediment favour self purification? (2) does the distribution of metals between extractable fractions change seasonally and thereby affect metal bioavailability ? Results on the distribution of metals are reported for Fe, Pb, Zn, Cu and Cd in bed sediments from Nahr Ibrahim (a karstic river) for summer and winter. A Tessier-like sequential extraction scheme was applied to samples (< 75 μm) for five locations along a 13 km stretch to the sea. Water pH was above 8.2 at all locations implying a very low solubility for Fe. Sediment was derived from catchment soils and limestone. Total sediment Fe increased in winter at all sites following deposition of eroded soil from upstream. Cadmium, Cu and Pb derived from polluting sources; the sources of Zn were more complex. Dilution by clean sediment explained winter reductions in total Cd, Cu and Pb; Zn changes were less consistent. Iron occurred mostly (> 77 sum of fractions) in the residual fraction compared with 6– 31 for pollutants; residual Cu and Zn showed a small increase in winter whereas Cd and Pb did not change. All readily exchangeable metals decreased in winter and the carbonate bound forms predominated in both seasons. Nahr Ibrahim has a high capacity for self purification and metal resolubilisation from sediment will be limited by the solubility of carbonate forms.  相似文献

Microprobe analyses of 38 soil and 5 mine-waste samples from Butte, Montana, demonstrated that the samples contain predominantly sulphide/sulphate and oxide/phosphates of lead (Pb)-bearing phases associated with mine waste. The sulphide/sulphate assemblage consists primarily of galena altering to anglesite and plumbojarosite, with secondary jarosite precipitating and rinding the Pb-bearing minerals. In addition, galena was encapsulated within pyrite or quartz grains. The oxide/phosphate assemblage consists of pH-neutral soils in which a plausible paragenetic sequence of PbO to Pb phosphates, PbMnO, or PbFeO is proposed, dependent on the activity of P, Mn, Fe, and Cl in the soil. In addition, Pb-bearing grains are occasionally armoured by the presence of a 1- to 3-(m rind of authigenic silicate. The low solubility of the Pb-bearing minerals resulting from encapsulation in non-Pb-bearing reaction rinds may provide an explanation for the limited Pb bioavailability observed when Butte soils were fed to rats (Freemanet al., 1992). Further evidence of the lack of absorption of lead from these soils is provided by the results of a blood-Pb study indicating very low blood-Pb levels in Butte children. The lower bioavailability of Pb from mining sites, compared to smelting and urban environments, is also due to kinetic limitations that control dissolution rates of Pb-bearing solids relative to the residence time of soil in the gastrointestinal (Gl) tract. When the test soil was fed to New Zealand White rabbits, only 9% of the total Pb was solubilised in the stomach, and therefore available for absorption. Anin vitro assay, developed to estimate maximum available Pb from soil, demonstrates that ingestion of mine-waste-bearing soil results in limited Pb dissolution, and produces results similar to thein vivo testing.  相似文献

The application of sequential extraction procedures to determine metal speciation in sediments is fraught with uncertainty regarding what is actually dissolving or re-precipitating at each stage. In order to choose an appropriate scheme for the investigation of contaminated anaerobic mud two different sequential extraction procedures (Kersten and Förstner, 1986; Quevauviller, 1998) were investigated using a Cryogenic SEM (CryoSEM) technique coupled with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDXA). This enabled assessment of the degree of reagent selectivity and any re-precipitation associated with the respective methods. Analysis of the non-leached sediment revealed the most abundant authigenic minerals in order of decreasing abundance to be Fe2+-phosphate vivianite (Fe3(PO4)2·8H2O), mixed Fe, Zn, Cu sulphides, pyrite and calcite. After each stage of the sequential extraction the sediment residue was examined using CryoSEM. After extraction of the exchangeable fraction no obvious evidence of mineral dissolution was observed. Calcite was not completely dissolved during the carbonate extraction stage of either procedure. Vivianite began to dissolve in the carbonate extraction stage of both procedures and was completely dissolved by oxide extraction stage of both procedures. The sediment leached by acidified ammonium oxalate, contained abundant Fe oxalate crystals, suggesting that a large proportion of the Fe released from the vivianite has been re-precipitated. The Fe oxalate was then dissolved with the subsequent sulphide fraction. The technique used to extract the sulphide and organic fraction is the same in both schemes and no sulphide or metal rich organic matter was found in either residue.  相似文献

The coherent structure in near-bed turbulent boundary layer of vortex chamber, particularly the bursting events and their associated shear stresses play the main role in sediment flushing process and consequently the trap efficiency of the vortex settling chamber. Hence, three-dimensional velocity measurements were made at 48 points near the bed of physical model of vortex chamber by using Micro-ADV. The pattern of sediment deposition at the bed of vortex settling chamber reveals three separate regions formed by three predominant currents of inlet flow, flushing flow and outlet over flow. Additionally, due to the instability and three-dimensional nature of the bursting events near the bed of chamber, the new method of Markovian–Octant analysis was applied to study the different classes of near-bed stable shear stresses of vortex chamber in three dimensions. Moreover, the role of each class of stable shear stresses on Sediment transport mechanism at the bed of vortex chamber is investigated.  相似文献

珠江广州河段底泥中有机质、硫化物和重金属汞、铜、铅的污染监测结果表明:各种污染物的含量范围分别为有机质20.8—74.4g/kg,硫化物28.7—538mg/kg,汞0.07-0.74mg/kg,铜20.9—101mg/kg,铅14.2—917mg/kg;它们在沿程各断面的分布表现为上游往中游递增,而中游向下游递减,基本上以猎德、广纸和黄沙三个断面的污染最严重;各种污染物的污染程度顺序是硫化物>汞>铜>铅。相关分析表明:汞、铜与有机质和硫化物的相关关系均达到极显著水平。说明随着底泥中有机质和硫化物积累的增加,汞、铜的富集量相应增加,污染加重。  相似文献

How changes in environmental complexity and heterogeneity affect beta diversity is poorly known. We investigated patterns of beta diversity in subtidal assemblages of algae and invertebrates in the northwest Mediterranean in relation to inclination of the substratum and sedimentation. Vertical and horizontal substrata supported distinct assemblages under low, but not under heavy, ambient loads of sediment. To test the hypothesis that sediment reduced the dissimilarity between assemblages, sedimentation was increased experimentally in plots established on vertical and horizontal surfaces at sites experiencing low ambient levels of sedimentation. Patterns were compared to those occurring at unmanipulated sites and at sites exposed to heavy loads of sediment about 2 km apart. After one year, assemblages on vertical substrata were indistinguishable from those occurring on flat surfaces at manipulated sites and both converged toward those occurring at sites exposed to heavy loads of sediment. Control sites still supported distinct assemblages on vertical and horizontal substrata by the end of the experiment. Similar effects of sediment were observed on recovering assemblages in experimental clearings. These results show that sediment increased similarity in assemblages overriding the influence of habitat complexity on beta diversity at small and large spatial scales.  相似文献

Benthic community respiration and the cycling of N and P were seasonally investigated in the unprotected, sandy sediments (Z5m) of the nearshore zone of the Georgia Bight, USA in 1981 and 1982. Nutrient exchange across the sediment-water interface was calculated from a diffusive model, measured by in-situ enclosure experiments and estimated from whole core incubations. Seasonally changing pore water profiles indicated that the sediments were not in steady-state with respect to N and P and showed the characteristics of enhanced interstitial water movement by benthic animals. Over an annual period the total flux of nitrogen measured in situ averaged 1812 mol m-2 d-1 from the sediments. NH 4 + flux accounted for the vast majority of the total directly measured N flux (77%), followed by nitrate + nitrite (14%), and dissolved organic nitrogen (9%). Phosphorus flux averaged 537 mol m-2 d-1. A large ratio of in-situ fluxes to calculated diffusive fluxes (5.2:1) indicated flux enhancement due to benthic animal activity. ammonium fluxes measured in situ did not agree well with the rate of NH 4 + produced in incubated whole cores (11.7 mmol m-2 d-1). Relative rates of C, N and P release throughout the year fluctuated considerably. Generally, nutrient fluxes were not simply related to respiration or temperature. As respiration was highly correlated with temperature, however, this suggested that respiration-regeneration was temporarily decoupled from exchange across the sediment-water interface. The annual C-N-P flux stoichiometry was 130:3.1:1. Using the rate at which NH 4 + was produced in incubated cores the stoichiometry was 120:21:1. The anomalously low N flux measured in situ was attributed to a combination of denitrification and wave-and current-induced sediment nutrient flushing. The potential for sediment flushing is high as experiments showed that sediments were fluidized or resuspended down to 25 cm during large storms. Benthic nutrient flux contributed 40% to the annual P but only 11% to the annual N requirements of the pelagic primary producers.This is Contribution No. 558 from the University of Georgia Marine Institute. 2000年4月至2002年4月,对截污前后的深圳河落马洲段大型底栖动物进行两周年的季度监测.结果表明,截污前深圳河落马洲段没有发现大型底栖动物;截污后大型底栖动物种数、密度、生物量和种类多样性指数(H′)有随时间推移呈增加的趋势;截污后底泥中硫化物、总氮、总磷随时间推移呈下降趋势.由此可见,截污后深圳河落马洲段大型底栖动物从无到有,种数、密度和生物量从少到多,群落结构处于向多样性恢复的过程中.图6表2参11  相似文献

Survival of the bivalve Macoma balthica in (near) anoxic seawater was studied in a static system and a flow-through system and compared with emersed exposure to air and N2. In the static system, a decrease in pH and exponential accumulation of sulphide in the incubation medium were observed, indicating excessive growth of (sulphate-reducing) bacteria. These changes in the chemical environment were prevented by the use of a flow-through system. However, this treatment hardly affected survival time. Median mortality times were 8.3 and 9.0 days for the static and flow-through incubation, respectively. Addition of the antibiotic chloramphenicol strongly increased survival time in both systems with corresponding values of 17.9 and 23.0 days. A similar value was obtained for survival in air (LT50= 21.7 days). In a second experiment (1 year later), we obtained much lower values for anoxic survival in a static system, although laboratory conditions, season and temperature were similar. The pH values were adjusted to 6.5, 7.2 and 8.2 by buffering the media (25 mM Tris-HCl), and the corresponding LT50 values were 5.5, 5.7 and 4.7 days, respectively. In the presence of chloramphenicol the values were 10.8, 10.9 and 9.5 days, respectively. These values show that a slightly acidic medium increased survival time. Exposure to an atmosphere of N2 resulted in a survival time close to that in anoxic seawater without chloramphenicol (LT50= 6.4 days). Overall the results indicate that proliferation of anaerobic bacteria associated with the bivalves was the main cause of death. Since chloramphenicol also displayed a strong positive effect in the flow-through system, which prevented the accumulation of released waste products and a decrease of pH, bacterial damage must have been by injury of the tissues of the clams and not by the release of noxious compounds to the medium. Bacterial outbreaks are a part of every anoxic event (eutrophication), and therefore, in their habitats, direct bacterial infection may also be the cause of clam mortality. It is concluded that laboratory studies on anoxic tolerance, or impact of sulphide, may produce artefacts when no precautions are taken to suppress bacterial proliferation. We tested several predictions of nest defense theory by observing variation in flushing distance and probability of nest abandonment within and between six species of waterfowl. In these species, only the females incubate eggs and attend offspring. First, we examined whether flushing distance by females varied in relation to clutch size, stage of incubation, and time of season, after controlling for the number of visits made to nests by observers. Revisits by observers appeared to affect flushing distance by females for reasons unrelated to the relative value of the current clutch. We found that as incubation progressed, females allowed observers to approach more closely before flushing from the nest. In some species, females with larger clutches allowed closer approaches to nests before flushing which was also consistent with nest defense theory. In contrast, time of season (Julian date) did not relate to flushing distance for any species. When species were compared, we found that species with moderate to high yearly mortality and high reproductive output per breeding attempt (e.g., northern shoveler and blue-winged teal) were less likely to abandon nesting attempts and exhibited riskier behavior (remained at nests when approached closely by observers) than species that had lower yearly mortality (e.g., mallard). Nephtys hombergii is a free-living, burrowing predator in marine sediments. The worm is, therefore, exposed to various environmental conditions which tube-dwelling polychaetes of the same habitat most likely do not encounter. The worms have to survive periods of severe hypoxia and sulphide exposure, while at the same time, they have to maintain agility in order to feed on other invertebrates. N. hombergii is adapted to these conditions by utilising several strategies. The species has a remarkably high content of phosphagen (phosphoglycocyamine), which is the primary energy source during periods of environmental stress. With increasing hypoxia, energy is also provided via anaerobic glycolysis (pO2<7 kPa), with strombine as the main end-product. Energy production via the succinate pathway becomes important only under severe hypoxia (<2 kPa), suggesting a biphasic response to low oxygen conditions which probably is related to the worm's mode of life. The presence of sulphide resulted in a higher anaerobic energy flux and a more pronounced energy production via glycolysis than in anoxia alone. Nevertheless, after sulphide exposure under anaerobic conditions of <24 h, N. hombergii is able to recover completely. Although N. hombergii appears to be well adapted to a habitat with short-term fluctuations in oxygen and appearance of hydrogen sulphide, its high energy demand as a predator renders it likely to limit its survival in an environment with longer lasting anoxia and concomitant sulphide exposure. Field and laboratory studies from 1989 to 1994 of the nematode Theristus (Penzancia) anoxybioticus Jensen, 1995 inhabiting muddy sediment at methane seepages in the northern Kattegat, Denmark, have revealed a series of biological features of adults and juveniles not observed before in free-living marine nematodes. Reproductive adults were present in April and May only and inhabited the uppermost cm of sediment, while juveniles inhabited deep anoxic and sulphidic sediment layers during the remaining months of the year. This points to a downwards migration of newly hatched juveniles and an upwards migration during adulthood. Gut content analyses showed that adults feed mainly on benthic diatoms by swallowing whole cells while juveniles probably feed on bacteria; this differentiation in food clearly relates to the main bulk of potential food items in their respective microhabitats. The generation time is estimated to be one year, with a juvenile life span of about nine months, which is four to eight times longer than that found in related aerobic species of similar body size. Adults survived in oxic water but 50% died within 15 h in hypoxic water (5 to 6% atm sat), and all died within 12 h in anoxic water. Juveniles on the other hand died within 0.5 h in oxic water but survived anoxic water for at least 15 d. These results suggest that juveniles of T. anoxybioticus are adapted to an anaerobic life style.  相似文献

Two drills (MBM1* and MBM2) provided at “Bocca di Malamocco” gave environmental and palaeo-environmental information on sedimentation for the last 50,000 years. the MBM2 supplies textural, gas and organic matter studies of sediment and principal ion content of pore water. Two main palaeo-environments, divided in six cycles, are recognized. Marine environment characterizes the sediment above 12.80 metres below sea level (mbsl) and continental environment dominates the sediments below.

The concentration/depth profiles of dissolved ammonia, phosphates and gases are related to the occurrence of a relatively high organic content in the sediment core. Carbon dioxide to methane ratio shows a constant value below 20 mbsl, while above that level only carbon dioxide was detected. A sulphate gradient in the transition zone between the marine to fresh water interval suggests a methane oxidation. These findings indicate that diffusive transport of methane from marine sediments to the atmosphere may be considered minimal. the sedimentary cycles are related to the oxygen isotopic stages. They suggest a variable hydraulic regime occurred during the last Glacial time in the palaeo-plain corresponding to the present Venice lagoon.  相似文献

Benthic components and metabolic activity at two stations in the Darss-Zingst estuary (eastern German Baltic coast) were investigated over a seasonal cycle from April 1985 to August 1986. As has been established for temperate and boreal ecosystems, peaks in the biomass of benthic microphytes occurred in the spring and late autumn to winter, presumably caused by settling phytoplankton blooms. Metabolic activity of the benthos did not increase with rising ambient temperatures. Rather, the highest values of oxygen consumption were recorded during the cooler months (spring and winter), when increased numbers of organisms were also observed. This may be a response to a greater food supply to the sediment in the form of settling phytoplankton during these times of year.  相似文献

The Norway lobster, Nephrops norvegicus, is moderately tolerant of sulphide [the lethal time to 50% mortality (LT50) was 22.5 h when exposed to 500 M sulphide] but, whenever possible, it attempts to avoid the presence of sulphide in its immediate vicinity. Any sulphide entering the animal is oxidized to thiosulphate, which accumulates in the haemolymph and in the tissues. During exposure to low concentrations of sulphide, the rate of oxygen consumption is maintained or even enhanced even though the lobsters become quiescent. The apparent increase in oxygen consumption is probably due to the oxidation of sulphide to thiosulphate. At higher concentrations, oxygen consumption decreases, perhaps because of the inhibitory effect of sulphide on electron transport, and N. norvegicus resorts to anaerobic metabolism as indicated by the accumulation of lactate in the haemolymph and in the tissues.Communicated by L.
