It has been suggested that industrial waste discharges are associated with the occurrence of fin damage and skin lesions. A mixed population of diseased and healthy blatfish consisting ofLimanda limanda, Pleuronectes platessa, Platichthys flesus andSolea solea were collected from an industrialised area (Calais, France) and were compared with diseased and healthyl. limanda caught in a non-industrialised area (Brixham, England). Analysis of skin samples from necrosed and healthy fish by X-ray microanalysis and atomic absorption spectroscopy has shown that no elemental accumulation occurs either in necrosed fish, or fish from an industrialised area. The fish from Calais were heavily infested with the ectoparasitic copepodLepeophtheirus pectoralis (O.F. Müller) and, although few were found on fish from Brixham, it is unlikely that this infestation was related to the discharge of industrial effluents.  相似文献

Capture success of the medusa Aurelia aurita preying on various developmental stages of fish larvae was measured together with larval reactivity and escape speed after being stung. These experiments were conducted in the spring of 1983 with A. aurita medusae collected from Loch Etive, Scotland and laboratory-reared larvae of Gadus morhua L., Platichthys flesus L., Pleuronectes platessa L. and Clupea harengus L. Capture success of the medusae increased with medusa size, but decreased with advancing larval development. Smaller species of larvae were more vulnerable to capture. Larval reactivity to encounters with medusae increased with advancing development, and larger species of larvae were more reactive to encounters. Larval escape swimming speeds also increased with advancing larval development and size. These results indicate that earlier stages of larvae within a species and smaller species of larvae at a given stage are more vulnerable to predation by medusae since they are less reactive to encounters. Apparently they are more susceptible to the effects of neurotoxins. Predation rates on different developmental stages of herring larvae are documented and compared with rates predicted by a predation model. Predictions fell within the range of observed predation rates, but tended to overestimate rates by larger medusae feeding on larger herring larvae. This indicates the possibility of predator satiation and/or behavioural avoidance.  相似文献

Rates of predation by the invertebrates Aurelia aurita, Thysanoessa raschi and Euchaeta norvegica on larval stages of cod (Gadus morhua L.), flunder (Platichthys flesus L.), plaice (Pleuronectes platessa L.), herring (Clupea harengus L.), and turbot (Scophthalmus maximus L.) were determined. Experiments were conducted in late winter and early spring 1982 with predators collected in Loch Etive, Scotland and prey obtained from several locations in Great Britain. Early stages of the smallest species, cod, flounder and turbot, tended to be most vulnerable to all three predators, while the early stages of the larger species, plaice and herring, and older stages of all species, were less vulnerable. For all stages and species of larvae, predation rates by the three predators were most closely related to larval length and escape swimming speed. Larval length itself was closely correlated to indices of larval escape ability. Low predation rates on large larvae by E. norvegica could be due to handling difficulties, whereas for A. aurita and T. raschi these low rates were due to escape abilities of the larger larvae. Prey movement is an important stimulus eliciting predation in E. norvegica but not in A. aurita or T. raschi.  相似文献

The genetic structure of the flounders Platichthys flesus L. and P. stellatus Pallas was investigated on different spatial scales through analysis of allozyme variation at 7 to 24 polymorphic loci in samples collected from different regions (Baltic Sea, North Sea, Brittany, Portugal, western Mediterranean, Adriatic Sea, Aegean Sea and Japan) in 1984 to 1987. No geographic variation was evident within a region. Some pattern of differentiation by distance was inferred within the Atlantic, while the Mediterranean comprised three geographically isolated populations and was itself geographically isolated from the Atlantic (fixed allele differences at up to three loci were found among P. flesus populations from the Atlantic, the western Mediterranean, the Adriatic Sea, the Aegean Sea and also P. stellatus from the coast of Japan). Sea temperature during the reproductive period probably acts as a barrier to gene flow between populations. Genetic distances among European flounder populations (P. flesus) were higher than, or of the same magnitude as, the genetic distance between Pacific (P. stellatus) and European flounder populations, suggesting that P. flesus is paraphyletic and/or there is no phylogenetic basis to recognising P. stellatus as a different species. The divergence between P. flesus and P. stellatus was thus inferred to be more recent than the divergence between the present P. flesus populations from the NE Atlantic and eastern Mediterranean. The eastern Mediterranean populations are thought to originate from the colonisation of the Mediterranean by a proto-P. flesus/P. stellatus ancestor, whereas the present western Mediterranean population has undergone a more recent colonisation event by P. flesus. Patterns of mitochondrial DNA variation, established on a smaller array of P. flesus samples, were in accordance with the geographic patterns inferred from the allozyme survey. In addition, they supported the hypothesis of a two-step colonisation of the western Mediterranean. These results contribute to our understanding of the biogeography of the Mediterranean marine fauna, especially the group of boreal remnants to which P. flesus belongs. An examination was made of the stomach contents of the larvae of the plaice Pleuronectes platessa Linnaeus, 1758; the flounder Platichthys flesus (Linnaeus, 1758), the dab Limanda limanda (Linnaeus, 1758), and the sole Solea solea (Linnaeus, 1758) collected in the eastern English Channel and in the Southern Bight during the winter and spring of 1971. These 4 species of flat fish have distinct diets, and competition for food between them is largely avoided. Plaice larvae fed almost exclusively on Oikopleura dioica; flounder larvae also ate O. dioica, but in addition a wide range of planktonic organisms including phytoplankton, polychaete larvae, lamellibranch larvae, and copepod nauplii. Dab larvae fed mainly on the nauplii and copepodite stages of a variety of copepods, but particularly of Temora longicornis. Some T. longicornis copepodites and polychaete larvae were eaten by sole larvae, but the principal prey of these was lamellibranch larvae. The larvae of all the species began to feed in the yolk-sac stage; the initial food of all except plaice consisted of dino-flagellates, followed by tintinnids and copepod nauplii. Feeding began at dawn and the number of feeding fish and the number of food organisms in their stomachs increased throughout the day to a maximum near sunset. There were no consistent differences between the two areas in the diets of any of the species.  相似文献

We studied the resistance of benthic prey organisms (Ostracoda, Hydrobia spp., Macoma balthica) to digestion by juvenile flounder, Platichthys flesus (L.), in a series of aquarium experiments. Results showed that some food species are able to survive the gut passage (Ostracoda 53 to 75%, Hydrobia spp. 46 to 92%). This has ecological implications, as increasing eutrophication of the Baltic Sea favours prey species that are nondigestible for the juvenile flounder. Thus, seemingly small changes in food-web structure may have unpredictable effects for the predatory fish. Received: 8 March 1997 / Accepted: 14 March 1997  相似文献

The extent to which energy is transferred directly from benthic meiofauna to epibenthic predators was investigated on an intertidal sand-flat in the Exe estuary, southwest England, during 1981–1982 and compared with data obtained from an intertidal mud-flat in the Lyhner estuary, also in south-west England, between 1978 and 1981. Two species of flatfish (Pleuronectes platessa L. and Platichthys flesus L.), two species of goby [Pomatoschistus microps (Krøyer) and P. minutus (Pallas)], brown shrimp (Crangon crangon L.) and shore crabs (Carcinus maenas L.) are the most common epibenthic predators feeding on the benthic invertebrates in these locatites. Harpacticoid copepods are the only component of the meiofauna to form a significant part of the diet of early juvenile stages of these predators, particularly the invertebrates. Harpacticoids are a more important source of food for predators feeding over the sand-flat than for those feeding on the mud-flat because in the sand-flat alternative prey of suitable size, such as small annelids, are absent. Moreover, the impact of predation on the mud-flat is spread over the whole harpacticoid species spectrum whereas on the sandflat it is confined almost entirely to a single species, Asellopsis intermedia (T. Scott). Flatfish, gobies and shrimp consume daily an estimated 0.01 to 0.1% of the standing stock of A. intermedia and account for between 12 and 22% of the observed reduction in the population of this species between July and October. Therefore, only a very small proportion of total meiofauna biomass is transferred directly to higher trophic levels.  相似文献

Three species of infaunal gammaridean amphipods, Rhepoxynius abronius (Phoxocephalidae), Eohaustorius washingtonianus, and E. estuarius (Haustoriidae) were tested in a water-only system to assess their sensitivity to tributyltin (TBT) without the influence of factors that could affect bioavailability. When mortality (LC50) was the endpoint, the results indicated that R. abronius was 20 times more tolerant to tributyltin than either haustoriid species; however, when mortality plus reburial behavior (EC50) was assessed, the difference was only about 10 times. The bioconcentration factor (BCF) was also consistently lower in R. abronius (11.1 to 16.5 times) than in the haustoriids; however, when the LD50 was calculated, the concentration in the tissues associated with 50% mortality for each species was not significantly different. The large disparity in species' response is attributed to reduced uptake and a potentially greater ability to metabolize this compound by R. abronius. An analysis of TBT uptake confirmed that R. abronius was able to accumulate less TBT and hence maintain a low body burden for a given water concentration. The results of a separate uptake study were used to formulate a hypothesis for observed differences in reburial behavior. Because the rate of TBT uptake was lower in R. abronius, we propose that the slower rise in toxicant body burden allowed for a gradual response in this species which included a sublethal effect (non reburial), compared to a rapid rise in the body burden for E. estuarius which caused the response to quickly proceed from no effect to death.  相似文献

Escape speeds of marine fish larvae during early development and starvation   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Response rates to tactile stimulation and subsequent escape speeds were measured using a video-recording system during early development and starvation of fish larvae. The species studied included the yolk-sac larvae of Clyde and Baltic herring (Clupea harengus L.), cod (Gadus morhua L.), flounder (Platichthys flesus L.) and older larvae of Clyde herring. The proportion of larvae responding (response rate) was initially about 20 to 25% in herring and 35 to 40% in cod and flounder using a probe, but about 70 to 80% using the sucking action of a pipette in all species except flounder. Both response rates and escape speeds (mean and maximum) tended to peak 1 to 2 d before the PNR (point-of-no-return, when 50% of larvae are too weak to feed), then decreased slowly during further starvation. An inter-species comparison showed that the highest recorded mean escape speeds (measured over a period of 200 ms) and highest maximum escape speeds (over 20 ms) ranged from 5.7 to 8.6 BL/s (body lengths/s) and 12.1 to 16.1 BL/s, respectively. The larvae made directional responses away from the stimulus only when they developed and reached the feeding stage.  相似文献

A lactose-binding lectin (TCL) was purified from the seeds of African walnut, Tetracarpidium conophorum, and acute toxicity studies of the lectin were carried out with Swiss albino male mice. Animals were administered doses of TCL from 500 to 2500?mg?kg?1 body weight (b.wt.) orally while intraperitoneally the dose ranged from 10 to 600?mg?kg?1 b.wt. Animals were then assessed for organ and body weight changes, mortality, and histopathology. TCL did not cause any observable toxicity via the oral route; however, when administered intraperitoneally, TCL elicited toxicity with an LD50 of 50?mg?kg?1 b.wt. Death from intoxication was preceded by convulsion, hypoactivity, salivation, ataxia, and weakness. The animals given lethal doses of the lectin showed profound respiratory depression which was judged to be the primary cause of death. Histopathological analysis indicated that the lungs, liver, and spleen were adversely affected while the kidney and other organs were essentially normal. In all the affected organs, the severity of toxicity was dose-dependent as the effect of the lectin became more pronounced with increase of the dose administered.  相似文献

Owing to their widespread use in wooden products, industrial products, cosmetics, and personal care products, biocides are frequently detected in wastewater and surface water. In this study, I examined the acute toxicities of 10 commonly used biocides, namely methylisothiazolinone, benzisothiazolinone, octylisothiazolinone, dichlorooctylisothiazolinone, iodopropynyl butylcarbamate, triclosan, azoxystrobin, pyraclostrobin, climbazole, and clotrimazole, in the water flea (Daphnia similis), freshwater planarians (Dugesia japonica) and green neon shrimp (Neocaridina denticulata). Among the 10 tested biocides, dichlorooctylisothiazolinone was the most toxic to both D. similis and N. denticulata, whereas pracolstrobin was the most toxic to Du. japonica. By contrast, the least toxic biocides for D. similis, Du. japonica, and N. denticulata were climbazole, iodopropynyl butylcarbamate, and methylisothiazolinone, respectively. The 48-h nominal LC50 values of all the biocides, except for benzisothiazolinone and climbazole, in D. similis were mostly less than 1 mg/L. In addition, the 96-h nominal LC50 values of all the biocides, except for methylisothiazolinone and iodopropynyl butylcarbamate, in Du. japonica was less than 1 mg/L. These results indicate the biocides with low LC50 values are relatively toxic to freshwater organisms.  相似文献

Investigation into the pressure resistance of 8 intertidal species belonging to the genera, Uca, Sesurma, Talorchestia and Littorina from the Northern Gulf of Mexico and Panama sheds light on the relationships between temperature and hydrostatic-pressure resistance. Generally, increasing temperature increases the pressure required to elicit reversible reactions such as increased activity and tetany, or paralysis, wheroas increasing temperature generally evokes the irreversible response of death (LD50) at a decreasing pressure. Tropical stenotherms tend to be more sensitive to hydrostatic pressure than eurythermal-temperate species at the same or similar temperatures.  相似文献

Tolerance experiments on freezing and supercooling (without ice formation) were designed to determine correspondence between tolerance to low temperatures and spatio-temporal distribution of one turbellarian and five polychaete species from sandy beaches of the North Sea island of Sylt. Freezing tolerances are always less than supercooling tolerances. Dinophilus gyrociliatus is significantly more sensitive to freezing (LD50 value after 30 min of freezing:-3°C) than the others, whereas Stygocapitella subterranea is significantly less sensitive (50% mortality at-15.7°C after 30 min). The supercooling tolerances differ considerably among the species. The sequence of tolerances (LD50 values) is as follows: Microphthalmus sczelkowii (-2.9°C after 4 h); D. gyrociliatus (<1 h at-8°C); M. listensis (5.6 h at-8°C); Protodriloides symbioticus (8.2 h at-8°C); Notocaryoplanella glandulosa (66 h at-8°C); S. subterranea (72 h at-8°C). Species of sand flats (d. gyrociliatus, M. listensis, P. symbioticus) have lower tolerances than those of the beach slope (N. glandulosa, S. subterranea). Among the latter, tolerances increase with distance of the distributional area from low tide level. S. subterranea, a species occurring at the uppermost position in the intertidal, proves to be best adapted to both freezing and supercooling. Species preferring deeper regions of the beach (M. sczelkowii) show lower supercooling tolerances than surface dwelling forms. Northern species usually have higher tolerances to cold than southern ones, reaching their distribution limits near the island of Sylt.  相似文献

Rhodeus amarus acclimated to 10° or 20°C die at 31.7° or 36.4°C, respectively (cessation of operculum movements). After raising the adaptation temperature (AT) from 10° to 20°C, adaptation is complete after 8 days. The toxicity of actinomycin D, injected intraperitoneally, is AT-dependent (e.g. at 5°C, LD50–7 days=0.8 μg/g fish; at 25°C, LD50–7 days=0.35 μg/g fish). In the following experiments 0.5 μg actinomycin/g fish were used. After actinomycin-injection, RNA-values in white dorsal muscle decreased about 50% within 12 h and the values of control individuals were finally attained after 16 days. Following an AT-change from 10° to 20°C, DNA-values in the white dorsal muscle increased about 10%, RNA-values about 30%, within 12 h. However, in fish injected intraperitoneally with actinomycin, no increase in DNA or RNA was noticed. Actinomycin injection per se causes increased heat resistance. This process lasts 10 days. If AT is raised now from 10° to 20°C, the new resistance level is reached later. The control fish gain resistance at a rate of about 1 C°/day during the first days after the temperature change. Actinomycin-treated individuals, however, exhibit an increase of 0.25 C°/day. Inhibition of resistance adaptation due to proteinbiosynthesis-inhibitors supports the view that protein synthesis is of importance for adjustments in heat resistance of intact animals.

The present study evaluated the beneficial effect of acetyl-L-carnitine (ALC) on subacute chlorpyrifos (CPF)-induced alterations in serum lipid profiles and some biomarkers of oxidative stress in Wistar rats. Twenty-eight adult male rats divided into four groups of seven animals each (group I–IV) were used: I (S/oil) received soya oil (2 ml kg?1), II (ALC) received ALC (300 mg kg?1); III (CPF) received CPF (8.5 mg kg?1 ~ 1/10th LD50); IV (ALC+CPF) was pretreated with ALC (300 mg kg?1) and then exposed to CPF (8.5 mg kg?1), 30 min later. The treatment was orally for 28 days duration. Sera obtained from blood samples were evaluated for the levels of triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-c), malondialdehyde (MDA), and the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT). The levels of low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-c), very low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (VLDL-c), and atherogenic index (AI) were calculated. The result showed that elevated levels of TG, TC, LDL-c, VLDL-c, AI, and MDA, and the decreased levels of HDL-c, CAT, and SOD induced by CPF were modulated by ALC. It was concluded that ALC ameliorated the alterations in serum lipid and oxidative stress induced by CPF exposure in the rats, partly through its antioxidant properties.  相似文献

This study was aimed at evaluating the ameliorative effect of vitamin C on chlorpyrifos-induced sensorimotor changes involving postural reflex, limb placing, and vibrissae touch in Wistar rats. Forty adult Wistar rats of either sex were divided into 4 groups of 10 animals in each group. Group I was administered soya oil (2?mL?kg?1) while group II was given vitamin C (100?mg?kg?1); group III was dosed with chlorpyrifos (10.6?mg?kg?1, i.e. ~1/8th of the LD50); group IV was administered vitamin C (100?mg?kg?1) and then exposed to chlorpyrifos (10.6?mg?kg?1), 30?min later. The regimens were administered by gavage once daily for a period of 17 weeks. Neurobehavioral parameters involving postural reflex, limb placing, and vibrissae touch responses measured at various intervals revealed a deficit in postural reflex, limb placing, and vibrissae touch responses in the CPF group, which was mitigated by vitamin C pretreatment. The neuronal and glial cell degeneration, increased brain malonaldehyde concentration, and decrease in superoxide dismutase, catalase, and acetylcholinesterase activities recorded in the group given chlorpyrifos were ameliorated by vitamin C. Therefore, vitamin C was shown to mitigate chlorpyrifos-induced sensorimotor deficits partly due to its antioxidant and acetylcholinesterase restoration properties.  相似文献

A micro-scale algal growth inhibition (μ-AGI) test using a common micro-plate based fluorometric detection was used to demonstrate the effects of humic substances (HSs) on the toxicity of tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) and its oxidative decomposition products 2,5-dibromo-1,4-benzoquinone (2,5-DBBQ), 2,5-dibromohydroquinone (2,5-DBHQ), 2,6-dibromobenzoquinone (2,6-DBBQ), and 2,6-dibromophenol (2,6-DBP) to Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata. The EC50 values were: EC50(TBBPA) = 7 mg L?1, EC50(2,5-DBHQ) = 7 mg L?1, EC50(2,5-DBBQ) = 19 mg L?1, EC50(2,6-DBP) = 49 mg L?1, and EC50(2,6-DBBQ) = 13 mg L?1. The toxicity of the chemicals was slightly lower in the presence of HA. The toxicity of TBBPA decomposed by a biomimetic catalytic system consisting of iron (III) 5,10,15,20-tetrakis (p-sulfonatophenyl) porphyrin (Fe(III)-TPPS) and KHSO5 was also evaluated using P. subcapitata and Chlamydomonas reinhardtii.  相似文献

Toxicity of cassava effluent in water on aquatic lives was examined via acute and chronic bioassay experiments on Clarias gariepinus (I) and Oreochromis niloticus (II) under laboratory conditions, using standard procedures. The effluent cyanide concentration exceeded the WHO limit for wastewater. Fish body weights and haematological parameters (HMP) significantly decreased with increasing effluent concentration at p≤0.05. Toxicity on HMP for the respective (I) and (II) varied from 5.4 to 52.8; 4.8 to 51.9% for packed cell volume, 4.1 to 43.9; 5.3 to 64.0% for red blood count, 0.0 to 15.7; 0.0 to 61.4% for white blood count, 3.6 to 45.9; 5.2 to 49.5% for haemoglobin, 11.6 to 71.9; 28.4 to 63.8% for total protein, 11.5 to 75.5; 15.0 to 58.2% for albumin and 11.8 to 75.0; 46 to 83.9% for globulin. Acute exposure yielded 96-h LC50 values of 0.45% for (I) and 0.25% for (II) and chronic exposure caused reduced growth and poor blood quality.  相似文献

Background

Earthworm heavy metal concentrations (critical body residues, CBRs) may be the most relevant measures of heavy metal bioavailability in soils and may be linkable to toxic effects in order to better assess soil ecotoxicity. However, as earthworms possess physiological mechanisms to secrete and/or sequester absorbed metals as toxicologically inactive forms, total earthworm metal concentrations may not relate well with toxicity.

Objective

The objectives of this research were to: i) develop LD50s (total earthworm metal concentration associated with 50% mortality) for Cd, Pb, and Zn; ii) evaluate the LD50 for Zn in a lethal Zn-smelter soil; iii) evaluate the lethal mixture toxicity of Cd, Pb, and Zn using earthworm metal concentrations and the toxic unit (TU) approach; and iv) evaluate total and fractionated earthworm concentrations as indicators of sublethal exposure.

Methods

Earthworms (Eisenia fetida (Savigny)) were exposed to artificial soils spiked with Cd, Pb, Zn, and a Cd?Pb?Zn equitoxic mixture to estimate lethal CBRs and mixture toxicity. To evaluate the CBR developed for Zn, earthworms were also exposed to Zn-contaminated field soils receiving three different remediation treatments. Earthworm metal concentrations were measured using a procedure devised to isolate toxicologically active metal burdens via separation into cytosolic and pellet fractions.

Results and Discussion

Lethal CBRs inducing 50% mortality (LD50, 95% CI) were calculated to be 5.72 (3.54–7.91), 3.33 (2.97–3.69), and 8.19 (4.78–11.6) mmol/kg for Cd, Pb, and Zn, respectively. Zn concentrations of dead earthworms exposed to a lethal remediated Zn-smelter soil were 3-fold above the LD50 for Zn and comparable to earthworm concentrations in lethal Zn-spiked artificial soils, despite a 14-fold difference in total soil Zn concentration between lethal field and artificial soils. An evaluation of the acute mixture toxicity of Cd, Pb, and Zn in artificial soils using the Toxic Unit (TU) approach revealed an LD50 (95% CI) of 0.99 (0.57–1.41) TU, indicating additive toxicity.

Conclusions

Total Cd, Pb, and Zn concentrations in earthworms were good indicators of lethal metal exposure, and enabled the calculation of LD50s for lethality. The Zn-LD50 developed in artificial soil was applicable to earthworms exposed to remediated Zn-smelter soil, despite a 14-fold difference in total soil Zn concentrations. Mixture toxicity evaluated using LD50s from each single metal test indicated additive mixture toxicity among Cd, Pb, and Zn. Fractionation of earthworm tissues into cytosolic and pellet digesis yielded mixed results for detecting differences in exposure at the sublethal level.

Recommendation and Outlook

CBRs are useful in describing acute Cd, Pb, and Zn toxicity in earthworms, but linking sublethal exposure to total and/or fractionated residues may be more difficult. More research on detoxification, regulation, and tissue and subcellular partitioning of heavy metals in earthworms and other invertebrates is needed to establish the link between body residue and sublethal exposure and toxicity.

Variations in orientation and photokinesis of Carcinus maenas and Palaemon serratus Zoeas I were studied in the presence of excess cobalt and strontium chlorides or silver nitrate. The speed of movement of larvae toward light (phototaxis) appears to constitute a good parameter for testing sublethal toxicity. The salts are toxic to crab larvae in the following decreasing order of toxicity: silver nitrate, cobalt chloride, strontium chloride. Within 4 days, orientation of C. maenas Zoea I was disturbed by excess CoCl2 and AgNO3 in the range 0.01 to 0.1 mg/l, and by excess SrCl2 in the order of 100 mg/l. For P. serratus Zoea I, the corresponding values were 100 to 500 mg/l CoCl2, 100 mg/l AgNO3, and above 500 mg/l SrCl2. C. maenas photokinesis was decreased by amounts of 0.001 mg/l of CoCl2 or AgNO3 within a period of only 2 to 3 days.  相似文献
