The adsorption characteristics of 1,1,1,2‐tetrafluoroethane (HFC‐134a) on activated carbon were investigated to evaluate the recovery efficiency of HFC‐134a by six activated carbons (two granular activated carbons (GAC1 and GAC2), one high‐surface area activated carbon (HAC), and three activated carbon fibers (ACF10, ACF15, and ACF20)). HFC‐134a adsorption on the activated carbons increased with increase in the specific surface area and pore volume of the activated carbon. The differential heat of the HFC‐134a adsorption decreased with increase in the percentage of the micropore volume to the total pore volume. The adsorption model of HFC‐134a on the activated carbon could be based on the Langmuir model. The constant a of the Langmuir plot of HAC and ACF20 is smaller than GAC1 or GAC2 and ACF10 or ACF15, respectively. The constant Ws of HAC has the largest value. The constant a was correlated to the heat of adsorption. It is concluded that the largest amount of HFC‐134a was adsorbed on HAC, and the least amount of interaction occurred between HFC‐134a and the HAC. The amount of HFC‐134a adsorbed on the activated carbons over time was applied to the Sameshima equation. The adsorption rate constant of HFC‐134a on HAC was the largest. The HAC could be suitable for the recovery of HFC‐134a.  相似文献

Chlorophyll a-specific in vivo fluorescence exhibited depth-dependent changes in a Sargasso Sea phytoplankton community, decreasing from a maximum value at the surface to a minimum at 90m, and then increasing again below 90 m. This distribution pattern was not explained by irradiance conditions, diurnal variability, senescence in the deep population, or changes in light-absorption efficiency of chlorophyll a. However, a significant positive correlation was found between mean phytoplankton cell size and fluorescence number in the upper euphotic zone, where nutrient concentrations were low. We hypothesize that the direct cause for this observed correlation was nutrient limitation. In this picoplankton-dominated community, packaging effect was minimal. Under nutrient-limiting conditions, as mean cell size increases photosynthetic efficiency decreases and therefore fluorescence number increases. In the lower euphotic zone where nutrients were not limiting, changes in fluorescence number exhibited weak size-dependence and appeared to be related to species compositional changes.  相似文献

A simple, rapid and sensitive method of microbiological assay for the determination of biotin in seawater has been developed by using a marine bacterium, Achromobacter sp. (Strain yH-51) as an assay organism. When the organism was incubated at 25°C for 48 h in a synthetic medium with constant shaking, a standard reference curve of bioassay was obtained. The organism is sensitive in the range 0.1 to 8.0 ng/l biotin. The distribution of biotin has been determined in the East China Sea, the North Pacific Ocean, and the bays and inlets along the Pacific coast of Japan. Biotin concentrations in surface waters were in the range from less than 0.1 ng/l up to 57.9 ng/l; generally high in coastal waters and low in deep open waters. The concentrations were generally high in surface waters, and rapidly decreased with depth down to 50 m, below which values were generally low. The vertical distribution of biotin followed closely the concentration of chlorophyll a, with high concentrations of biotin restricted to the euphotic layer of high chlorophyll a contents at most stations observed. Biotin concentrations in surface waters were generally high during summer, but in autumn and winter the concentrations decreased markedly.  相似文献

In July 1988 a survey was made in the Dogger Bank area of the North Sea. As a result of wind stress the area was found to be frequently well mixed. At the northerly slope a transition zone was observed between the stratified central North Sea and the well-mixed Dogger Bank area. Low nutrient concentrations were observed in surface waters; especially for nitrate (<0,1µM). High concentrations of phosphate (>0,5µM), nitrate (>1µM), ammonium (>2µM) and silicate (>2µM) only prevailed below the thermocline. Chlorophylla values were below 1µg l–1 near the surface. Enhanced values (up to 4µg l–1) were observed in the deeper layer at the transition zone and just below the thermocline at well-stratified locations. At the transition zone high specific C-fixation rates (up to 100 mg C mg–1 chla d–1) at the surface indicated the presence of enhanced productivity. The compensation depth for primary production was found to coincide with a specific C-fixation rate of 5 mg C mg–1 chla d–1. At greater depths, phytoplankton was only found where tidally induced vertical mixing allowed a regular exposure to higher light intensities. Storms resulted in a rapid redistribution of chlorophylla and enhancement of the C-fixation rate in the upper layer of the water column.Publication No. 10 of the project Applied Scientific Research Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (BEWON)  相似文献

Jassa herdmani (Walker 1893), a tube-building amphipod typical of hard substrates, was found in large densities on shipwrecks from the Belgian part of the North Sea, in association with the hydrozoan Tubularia indivisa. In this area, shipwrecks only represent the source of hard substrates in an environment dominated by soft sediments. Nevertheless, the long-distance dispersal of Jassa species has never been investigated. Therefore, we tested the hypothesis of dispersal with currents, by investigating the behaviour of J. herdmani in the laboratory. Size distribution revealed that newly released juveniles (<1 mm) predominated throughout the year and the lower frequency of the size class 1–3 mm indicates a high mortality or a dispersal at this life stage. Individuals of J. herdmani may initiate actively the transport by tidal or surface currents by swimming to the surface of the water or by floating at the surface, as suggested by behaviours noted in the laboratory. The reaction of the amphipods to a current was investigated in the laboratory. We could not detect any sexual function associated with drifting and there was also no preponderance of a size class in the drifting individuals. When testing different substrates, we observed a significant influence of the substrate type on the frequency at which drifting occurred: J. herdmani showed a better adherence on T. indivisa compared to other substrates. Finally, the amphipod showed also a preference for its host compared to other substrates, which suggests a possible detection mechanism.  相似文献

The benthic community of shallow-water hydrothermal vents (10 m water depth) in a sandy bay on the south coast of Milos, Greece was studied. The macro- and meiofauna, as well as environmental factors such as temperature, salinity, sulfide concentration, grain size composition, ATP concentration, organic carbon, chlorophyll a and phaeopigments were evaluated. Samples were taken along transects from a seagrass meadow into a hydrothermally active area. Hydrothermally active spots were distinguished from the surrounding sediment by their black sediment coloration and an overlying white bacterial mat. For comparison, a control transect from a seagrass meadow into bare sand in a non-vent area in the same bay was studied. Overall, we found decreasing faunal diversity from the seagrass bed towards the hydrothermally active area. Along this gradient, four different zones could be distinguished. (a) The seagrass area had a relatively low diversity compared to the control stations, but much higher diversity than in the areas directly influenced by hydrothermal activity. (b) The border zone between the seagrass and the hydrothermal area, with moderate sulfide concentrations, pH values, seawater salinity and temperatures, was inhabited by an impoverished community dominated by the polychaete Capitella capitata, the nematodes Oncholaimus campylocercoides and Sabatieria sp., and an as yet undescribed chromadorid nematode (Chromadorina sp.). (c) The transition zone at the border of the hydrothermal area proper, with temperatures and sulfide concentrations higher than in the border zone, was characterized by high salinity (60‰) and low pH values. Along with the gastropod Cyclope neritea, single specimens of C. capitata and O. campylocercoides occurred. (d) The hydrothermal area proper, characterized by high sulfide concentrations, had high sediment temperatures and high salinities. The pH was as low as 6. Here, the gastropod Cyclope neritea was the only species occurring in considerable numbers. The gaseohydrothermal activity seems to largely exclude the surrounding fauna in a graded zonal pattern. The increasing hydrothermal stress entrains a change of the ambient biota towards a depauperate consortium of tolerant, opportunistic species, e.g. Capitella capitata (Polychaeta) and Oncholaimus campylocercoides (Nematoda). Although the hydrothermal area proper was characterized by a thick bacterial mat, the benthic community was characterized not by bacteria feeders but by scavenging species. Vertical distribution of phytoplankton biomass in terms of carbon content (PC) and its relationship with chlorophylla and particulate organic carbon (POC) were examined together with phytoplankton growth rates in the tropical and subtropical western Pacific in 1979, where a prominent subsurface chlorophyll maximum (SCM) developed between 65 and 150 m. Fluorescence microscopy combined with image analysis was used for measurement of cell volume which was converted to PC. The SCM coincided consistently with subsurface maximum of PC, and the SCM primarily reflected in situ accumulation of phytoplankton biomass. The PC:chlorophylla ratio decreased with depth; the ratio was 1.8 times, on average, higher in populations at the SCM compared to those near the surface. This increase in relative cellular chlorophylla along with depth accentuated the magnitude of the SCM. The PC:POC ratio was substantially lower near the surface, 0.17 on average, and increased sharply around the SCM, with a mean value of 0.53. Thus suspended particles around SCM were richer in phytoplankton than those in the upper layers. A major part of PC was contributed by autotrophic eukaryotes both near the surface and at the SCM, and prokaryotic picoplankton comprised a relatively small proportion (6.3 to 14.9%) of PC. The high phytoplankton biomass around the SCM was suggested to be ascribed to in-situ growth of phytoplankton. Please address all correspondence and requests for reprints to Dr Furuya at his present address: Institute of Bioresources, Miè University, Kamihama, Tsu 514, Japan  相似文献

The towed undulating vehicle (TUV), named SARAGO, was used for two fine-scale surveys between the Italian and the Sardinian coasts during the Astraea 2 cruise (6–7 and 26–27 September 1995), studying the deep chlorophyll maximum distribution. SARAGO sections identify a sub-surface doming with higher chlorophyll a and primary production concentrations in the upwelling area of a cyclonic gyre region, detected by sea-surface temperature images. In the first section, the cyclone presents a double doming, in density and salinity, with shallower and concentrated patches of chlorophyll a for about 2 miles. Twenty days later, the second section shows that the gyre changes shape and extension, showing a single doming with higher primary production and chlorophyll a concentrations, distributed over a large area of about 40 nautical miles. SARAGO allows analysis of this high-variability phenomenon (cyclonic gyre) and allows concentrated patches (2 nm) to be identified, thus proving the importance of TUVs in the study of mesoscale processes.  相似文献

We investigated the genetic diversity and genetic structure of southern California populations of the common intertidal fucoid seaweed Pelvetia fastigiata, (J. Ag.) De Toni by means of allozyme electrophoresis and estimates of genetic neighborhood area and size, which are the first for seaweeds. We predicted that P. fastigiata populations would exhibit relatively low genetic diversity and high genetic structure because the seaweed is monoecious and has limited dispersal of gametes and zygotes. This prediction was supported; genetic diversity indices were all low compared to other seaweeds studied, but high genetic structure was evident particularly within individual reefs. Geospatial statistical analyses (second-order analyses) revealed clustered distribution of glucose-6-phosphate isomerase (GPI) alleles at the scale of 1 to 6 m within three reefs. The rare alleles were distributed only at the landward third of the reefs. Genetic neighborhood area (2.3 m2) and size (133 individuals) were estimated from parent-offspring dispersal distributions of gametes and zygotes from attached thalli and also detached reproductive fragments, which contributed very little to the effective neighborhood size. The neighborhood size was in the small theoretical range in which genetic drift could be responsible for the within-reef genetic structure. This result was equivocal, because the stereotyped distribution of rare alleles on the tips of each reef was highly unlikely to be due to random events (6.9×10-24). These results emphasize (1) the importance of allele mapping in addition to spatial statistics to elucidate genetic structure, and (2) that interpretation of genetic-structure statistics as evidence for gene flow can be complicated, even when supported with independent estimates of gene flow, if data are lacking on selection and sporadic migration events. The emerging pattern of low levels of polymorphisms in brown seaweeds will limit the use of Wright's F-statistics and will require alternative, more direct techniques for the analysis of mechanisms responsible for population genetic structure.  相似文献

In high-latitude waters such as the Southern Ocean, the primary production of phytoplankton supports the ecosystem. To understand the photo-acclimation strategy of such phytoplankton within cold environments, the vertical distribution profile of photosynthetic pigments was analyzed in the Southern Ocean. Samples were taken along 110°E during the austral summer, and along 150°E and around the edge of the seasonal sea ice of the Antarctic Continent during the austral autumn. Pigment extraction methods were optimized for these samples. The standing crop of chlorophyll a was larger in the region along the edge of the seasonal sea ice than at sampling stations in open ocean areas. Chlorophyll concentration seemed to be dependent on the formation of thermo- and haloclines along the edge of the seasonal sea ice, but not in the open ocean where such clines are less pronounced. The marker pigments fucoxanthin and/or 19′-hexanoyloxyfucoxanthin were dominant at most sampling stations throughout the water column, while other marker pigments such as alloxanthin were quite low. This indicated that diatoms and/or haptophytes were the major phytoplankton in this area. Comparison of the relative ratio of fucoxanthin with that of 19′-hexanoyloxyfucoxanthin allowed some stations to be characterized as either diatom-dominant or haptophyte-dominant. The relative ratio of xanthophyll-cycle pigments (diadinoxanthin plus diatoxanthin) to chlorophyll a was high in surface waters and decreased gradually with depth. This suggests that near the ice edge during summer in the Southern Ocean, both diatoms and haptophytes acclimate to their light environments to protect their photosystems under high-light conditions.  相似文献

This paper reviews the application of meso- porous transitional metal oxides in water treatment on basis of the catalysis and adsorption. Mesoporous transitional metal oxides are characterized by their intrinsic features, such as a high surface area, a highly ordered array of unidimensional pores with a very narrow pore size distribution, and highly dispersed active sites. Finally, the suggestions of further study on application are proposed.  相似文献

The distribution and structure of heterotrophic protist communities and size-fractionated chlorophyll a were studied during the Korea Deep Ocean Study 98 (KODOS 98) research expedition (July 1998) in the northeast equatorial Pacific Ocean (5–11°N). Areas of convergence and divergence formed at the boundaries of the South Equatorial Current (SEC), North Equatorial Current (NEC), and North Equatorial Counter Current (NECC) during the expedition. Water column physicochemical characteristics significantly influenced the size structure of heterotrophic protist communities. Intense vertical mixing and high nutrient and chlorophyll a concentrations characterized SEC and NECC areas, which were affected by converging and diverging water masses, respectively. Nanophytoplankton dominated in SEC and NECC areas; both areas also had relatively high heterotrophic protist biomasses (average 743 µg C m–2). NEC areas were characterized by a stratified vertical structure, low nutrient and chlorophyll a concentrations, and picophytoplankton dominance. The heterotrophic protist biomass in NEC areas averaged 414 µg C m–2; nanoprotists (<20 µm) dominated the community. The nanoprotist biomass comprised 49–54% of the total heterotrophic protist biomass in SEC/NECC areas and 67–72% in NEC areas. The biomass of heterotrophic protists was higher in SEC/NECC areas than in NEC areas, but the relative importance of nanoprotists was greater in NEC areas than in SEC/NECC areas. Heterotrophic dinoflagellates were dominant components of the <20 µm and >20 µm size classes in both water columns. The biomass of heterotrophic protists significantly correlated with the net-, nano-, and picophytoplankton biomass in SEC/NECC areas and with the nano- and picophytoplankton biomass in NEC areas. Heterotrophic protists and phytoplankton also showed strong positive correlation in the study area. The size structure of the phytoplankton biomass coincided with that of heterotrophic protists; the heterotrophic protist biomass positively correlated with the protists prey source. These relationships suggest that the community structure of heterotrophic protists and the microbial food web depended on size classes within the phytoplankton biomass. Microzooplankton grazing and phytoplankton growth rates were higher in SEC/NECC areas than in NEC areas. In contrast, the potential primary production grazed by microzooplankton was relatively high in NEC areas (127.3%) compared with SEC/NECC areas (94.6%). Our results indicate that the relative importance and size structure of heterotrophic protists might vary according to two distinct water column structures.Communicated by T. • The feasibility of facile fabrication of capacitor from floc sludge is discussed. • The porous carbon composites are obtained by acidification and KOH activation. • The as-prepared 3D structure has large surface area and optimal pore size. • Admirable specific capacitance and outstanding cycling stability are obtained. In this paper, floc sludge was transformed into porous carbon matrix composites by acidification and KOH activation at high temperature and used as an electrode material for application in capacitors. The effects of different treatment processes on the electrochemical properties of sludge materials were compared. The results of electrochemical tests showed that the sludge electrode exhibited excellent energy storage performance after HNO3 acidification and KOH activation with a mass ratio of 3:1 (KOH/C). The specific capacitance of the sludge electrode reached 287 F/g at a current density of 1 A/g. In addition, the sludge electrode material showed excellent cycle stability (specific capacity retained at 93.4% after 5000 cycles at 5 A/g). Based on XRD, FTIR, SEM, TEM, and BET surface analysis, the morphology of sludge electrode materials can be effectively regulated by chemical pretreatment. The best-performing material showed a 3D porous morphology with a large specific surface area (2588 m2/g) and optimal pore size distribution, improving ion channels and charge conductivity. According to the life cycle assessment of floc sludge utilization, it reduced the resource consumption and toxicity risk by more than 90% compared with ordinary sludge disposal processes. This work provided a cost-effective and eco-friendly sludge reuse method and demonstrated the application potential of sludge-based materials in high-performance supercapacitors.  相似文献

Adaptation of solitary corals, Fungia repanda and F. echinata, and their zooxanthellae to low light and ultraviolet light B (UV-B) was studied with respect to changes in their protein contents, photosynthetic pigment contents and the photosynthesis-irradiance (P-I) curves. The corals were collected from 1 to 50 m depths in the Republic of Belau (Paulau) in 1990 and 1991. The chlorophyll a content in a unit surface area of the coral did not change significantly with the depth of the habitat, whereas cellular chlorophyll a in the algae increased with the depth. Zooxanthellae density and protein content in a unit surface area of Fungia spp. decreased with the depth. Photosynthetic parameters normalized by a unit surface area of the Fungia spp., maximum gross photosynthetic rate (P gmax area-1) and dark respiration rate (R area-1), were negatively correlated with the depth, while initial slope of the P-I curve () did not show significant correlation with the depth. Compensation light intensity (Ic) decreased with the depth. In isolated zooxanthellae, P max chl a -1, and R chl a -1 decreased with the depth, while chl a was constant. P gmax cell-1 and R cell-1 did not change significantly but cell increased with the depth. Ic decreased with the depth as in the intact corals. Reduction of protein content in a unit area of the coral from deeper habitat implies decrease of host animal tissues. Reduction of Ic can be explained by decrease of R area-1, which may be due to the diminution of animal tissues. The photoadaptational response to low light intensity of intact Fungia spp. was found to be a combination of the photoadaptation of symbiotic algae and the decrease of host animal tissue. In order to study their adaptation to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, P-I curves of Fungia spp. and isolated zooxanthellae were analyzed before and after UV-B irradiation. 1 h UV-B irradiation showed no effect on the photosynthetic rate of the shallow water (1 m) corals, while it inhibited the photosynthesis of the deep water (30 m) corals and zooxanthellae isolated from both shallow and deep water corals. These results indicate that the host, Fungia spp., in shallow water have protective mechanism for intense UV-B in their habitat. These photoadaptational mechanisms seem to allow the Fungia spp. to have wide vertical distribution where light intensity spans more than two orders of magnitude.  相似文献

Phytoplankton pigments and species were studied at a coastal station off Sydney (New South Wales, Australia) over one annual cycle. Sudden increases in chlorophyll a (up to 280 mg m-2), due to short-lived diatom blooms, were found in May, July, September, January and February. These were superimposed upon background levels of chlorophyll a (20 to 50 mg m-2), due mostly to nanoplankton flagellates, which occurred throughout the year. The nanoplankton (<15 m) accounted for 50 to 80% of the total phytoplankton chlorophyll, except when the diatom peaks occurred (10 to 20%). The annual cycle of populations of 16 dominant species-groups was followed. Possible explanations as to alternation of diatom-dominated and nanoplankton-dominated floras are discussed. Thin-layer chromatography of phytoplankton pigments was used to determine the distribution of algal types, grazing activity, and phytoplankton senescence in the water column. Chlorophyll c and fucoxanthin (diatoms and coccolithophorids) and chlorophyll b (green flagellates) were the major accessory pigments throughout the year, with peridinin (photosynthetic dinoflagellates) being less important. Grazing activity by salps and copepods was apparent from the abundance of the chlorophyll degradation products pheophytin a (20 to 45% of the total chlorophyll a) and pheophorbide a (10 to 30%). Chlorophyllide a (20 to 45%) was associated with blooms of Skeletonema costatum and Chaetoceros spp. Small amounts of other unidentified chlorophyll a derivatives (5 to 20%) were frequently observed.  相似文献

The distribution, feeding and oxygen consumption of Calanus sinicus were studied in August 2001 on a transect across Yellow Sea Cold Bottom Waters (YSCBW) and two additional transects nearby. The distribution of C. sinicus adults and copepodites stage CV appeared to be well correlated with water temperature. They tended to concentrate in the YSCBW (>10,000 ind. m–2) to avoid high surface temperature. Gut pigment contents varied from 0.44 to 2.53 ng chlorophyll a equivalents (chl a equiv.) ind.–1 for adults, and from 0.24 to 2.24 ng chl a equiv. ind.–1 for CV copepodites. We found no relationship between gut pigment contents and the ambient chl a concentrations. Although the gut evacuation rate constants are consistent with those measured for other copepods, their low gut pigment contents meant an estimated daily herbivorous ingestion of <3% of body carbon in the YSCBW and <10% outside the YSCBW. However, based on estimates of clearance rates, C. sinicus feeds actively whether in the YSCBW or not, so the low ingestion rates probably reflect shortage of food. Oxygen consumption rates of C. sinicus ranged from 0.21 to 0.84 l O2 ind.–1 h–1, with high rates often associated with high temperature. From the oxygen consumption rates, daily loss of body carbon was estimated to be 4.0–13.7%, which exceeds our estimates of their carbon ingestion rates. C. sinicus was probably not in diapause, either within or outside the YSCBW, but this cold-water layer provides C. sinicus with a refuge to live through the hot, low-food summer.Communicated by T. Benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P) is accumulating in soils in a low-dose cumulative manner. The objectives of this study were to investigate the effects of B[a]P on the extractable and available fractions of B[a]P and on soil enzymatic activity using multiple-time superimposed and one-time contamination approaches. Results showed that the contents of B[a]P rapidly decreased in the first 14?d and later decreased slowly from 14 to 56?d in both one-time and multiple-time contamination tests. The contents of B[a]P in the multiple-time contamination test were lower than those in the one-time test. Soil urease, sucrase and dehydrogenase activities were rapidly inhibited in the early stage (14?d) and stimulated during the rest of the incubation, and soil dehydrogenase activity was more sensitive to B[a]P contamination than the other enzymes. High concentrations of B[a]P in soil led to greater inhibition of enzymatic activity than that at low concentrations in the early period of culture. Soil enzyme activities were weakly inhibited in multiple-time compared with in one-time contamination tests and were lower in the subsurface layer than in the surface layer. Our results revealed that the multiple-time superimposed approach might be better than one-time contamination for evaluating B[a]P risk in soil.  相似文献

Seasonal variations in the microphytobenthic diatom community were investigated in an intertidal sand flat of a tropical marine environment influenced by monsoons. Cores of sediments were collected along the beach gradient: low tide, mid tide and high tide zone up to a depth of 15 cm.. Diatom abundance was lowest during the monsoons and highest during the post-monsoons and the early pre-monsoon season throughout the intertidal transect. Diatom diversity was highest at the mid tide, followed by the high and low tide zones. Diatoms were viable up to a depth of 15 cm throughout the intertidal transect. The diatom community included the pennates, the permanent residents of this area, centric genera, which lead an attached mode of life and also some planktonic genera, brought in from ambient waters. Among the pennates, Navicula and Amphora were the dominant genera whereas in the case of centrics, Thalassiosira dominated the community throughout the intertidal transect down to a 15 cm depth. . Grain size fractions, which served as predictors of some diatom genera changed with tidal zones. The effect of winds on the resuspension of the pennate diatoms was evident only at the low tide zone down to a depth of 5 cm . Chlorophyll a concentration proved to be a good predictor of both pennate and centric diatom abundance at the low tide zone down to a depth of 10 cm and at the mid tide zone down to a depth of 5 cm.. However, even though chlorophyll a concentrations failed to reveal any positive correlation with the diatom abundance at both the deeper sediment layers and the high tide zone, the fact that viable cells were present at these areas reveal that the diatoms adopt survival strategies, contributing significantly to the carbon budgets of such unstable habitats.  相似文献

The relationship between in vivo light absorption efficiency of whole cells and in vitro absorption efficiency of algal pigments has been examined experimentally in the marine diatom Thalassiosira sp. In vitro absorption spectra were obtained for cells disrupted by either ultrasonic treatment or high-pressure shearing stress in a low-temperature (-40°C) pressure cell. A dimensionless measure of the magnitude of the package effect (Q a *), calculated from the ratio of whole-cell to disrupted-cell absorption, ranged from about 0.5 at the blue absorption peak of chlorophyll a (λ=435 nm) to 0.7 at the red chlorophyll a peak (λ=670 nm) to 1.0 at the absorption minimum (λ=600 nm). Cell diameter was found to be an inappropriate measure of size for assessing the magnitude of the package effect. Instead, the effective optical diameter for calculation of intracellular self-shading was found to be less than the cell diameter. This observation is consistent with the fact that most algal pigments are contained within chloroplasts, and that chloroplast volume is necessarily smaller than cell volume.  相似文献
