A mass mortality of Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis, attributed to disease, was monitored in an echinoiddominated barren ground at Eagle Head on the south-western coast of Nova Scotia, Canada, in 1982. Mortality was 70% in a shallow (3 m) nearshore area, resulting in a loss of echinoid biomass of 2 042 g fresh weight m-2, and 6% in deeper (7 m, 10 m) offshore areas. Echinoid density, size and nutritional condition (gonad index) were highest in the nearshore area. Survivorship was higher in juveniles (<15 mm diameter) than in adults resulting in the formation of a bimodal size distribution in the nearshore area. Mortality began around early October, near the peak of the annual cycle of seawater temperature (15°C), and was arrested by early December (seawater temperature 7°C) when morbid echinoids appeared to recover. In laboratory experiments, time to morbidity of S. droebachiensis exposed to morbid conspecifics increased exponentially with decreasing temperature (20° to 8°C). There was no survival at 20° and 16°C, 20% survival at 12°C and 100% survival at 8°C after 60 d; suggesting a lower temperature limit (between 12° and 8°C) for possible transmission of a pathogenic agent. Morbid laboratory echinoids from experiments at 16°C, and recovering echinoids collected in the nearshore area in early December, showed 100 and 85% survival respectively at <=8°C, and 0 and 15% survival respectively at 16°C, after 30 d. Time to morbidity was not affected significantly by nutritional condition and was similar for juvenile and adult echinoids. Time to morbidity was greater in echinoids exposed to one or three morbid individuals continuously, or seven morbid individuals for 1 h, relative to higher levels of exposure (up to seven morbid individuals continuously). Recent mass mortalities in S. droebachiensis have occurred in years of record high sea surface temperatures. The extent of mortality is correlated with the magnitude and duration of temperatures above a lower limit.  相似文献

Productivities of two cohorts of Chordaria flagelliformis (O. F. Müll.) C. Ag. were estimated from measured changes in biomass and survivorship over time. Maximum productivity during the summer growing season was 2.6 g C m-2 d-1. Although this figure is relatively high, the short growing season results in an annual production of only 89 g C m-2. The significance of primary production by C. flagelliformis lies in its seasonal timing. During the summer growth period, 50% of production was recycled directly by detrital material. During the same time period, productivity and biomass losses of other seaweeds are at their lowest.  相似文献

The autecology of Fucus distichus L. ssp. distichus was investigated at several sites on the Atlantic coast of Nova Scotia, Canada, throughout a 2-year period. This species is confined to high-littoral rock pools at exposed sites, where there appears to be little competition from other organisms. Water temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, and hydrogen-ion concentrations underwent both considerable seasonal and short-term variation. Pools with extremes of salinity did not contain F. distichus ssp. distichus. Receptacles are formed during winter, and by late spring they are cast. Sporelings were first visible during September; their development was slow, and these plants did not become reproductive until the second year. During the period February to May, rapid growth of new fronds occurred; an increase in both length and bulk of the plants resulted from this growth. Fronds of mature plants continued to elongate slowly throughout the summer and the early autumn with the formation of receptacles in winter. Plants were frequently damaged, which resulted in regeneration of new fronds from the wounded surface.Issued as NRCC No. 14510  相似文献

Mussels (Mytilus edulis) were collected from an unpolluted site in Newfoundland in 1984 and 1985 in order to determine the zinc levels of the whole soft tissues and individual organs. Individuals were collected in such a way as to eliminate all known physiological and environmental factors which might have led to differences in zinc concentration between individual mussels. The inherent variability of the whole soft tissue zinc concentration was found to be very high with a coefficient of variation (CV) around 40%. Most individual organs had relatively low mean zinc concentrations with small values for CV (10–18%). However, the kidney showed a relatively high mean zinc concentration (828 ppm) with a remarkable degree of variability (94–3 410 ppm) (CV=78%) and is responsible not only for the high degree of inherent variability in the population but also for the high levels of zinc found in the whole soft tissue of some individual mussels. Those individuals with high whole soft tissue zinc concentrations often had high kidney zinc concentrations and stored as much as 53% of their zinc load in the kidney (which accounted for only 1–3% of the total weight). However, other individual mussels with low whole soft tissue zinc concentrations had low kidney zinc concentrations and stored as little as 3% of their body zinc load in the kidney. Hence, the role that the kidney plays in zinc storage varies markedly from mussel to mussel.M.S.R.L. Contribution No. 624  相似文献

The ecological importance of mysid (Crustacea: Mysidacea) populations in coastal food webs is not well understood. Although the 10 or more species of epibenthic mysids found in Clayoquot Sound, BC, Canada, form the primary prey resource for seasonally abundant gray whales (Eschrichtius robustus), little is known about their life history. Here, Holmesmysis sculpta dominates multi-species swarms, however there are several potential routes to this state, one of which is higher embryo production. Reproductive capacity is key to the resiliency of local mysid populations and species diversity, in this study I compare one aspect, brood size for the four most commonly found species, H. sculpta, Neomysis rayii, Exacanthomysis davisi, and Columbiaemysis ignota. The number of embryos per brood was found to vary significantly between species; however, individual length is a stronger determinant of brood size. Here, I report previously unknown life history attributes of coastal mysid species, with important consequences for community structure and local marine food webs.  相似文献

This investigation was conducted in an area of oil spill along the east coast of Thailand to examine the relations among cytochrome P450 1A activity in liver and PAHs in the bile of the tonguefish and petroleum hydrocarbons in the sediments. PAH sediment concentrations in the reference and oil spill areas were 5.03 +/- 0.42 and 0.21 +/- 0.043 microg(-1) dry weight respectively Cytochrome activity in fish liver from oil spill area was 45.40 +/- 3.50 pmoles/ min/mg protein, almost threefold higher than that from the reference sites. Flourescense detection in bile metabolites at the oil spill area, 69.8 +/- 9.9 flourescense unit was significantly higher than that at the reference sites, 22.9 +/- 5.5 and 22.2 +/- 3.5 fluorescence unit. A strong correlation was found among cytochrome P450 1A activity in liver, PAH of bile metabolites and petroleum hydrocarbons. Both cytochrome and bile metabolites activity decreased seaward varying to the distance from the oil polluted area. We concluded that both detections in tonguefish can be regarded as a complementary biomarkers for the exposure of PAHs in tropical marine environments.  相似文献

The barnacle Balanus improvisus and the mussel Mytilus trossulus have been used as biomonitors of the trace metals Cu, Zn, Cd, Fe, Pb, Mn and Ni at five sublittoral sites in the Gulf of Gdansk (Baltic Sea) between February 2000 and September 2001. The study has established a benchmark against which future biomonitoring programmes will be able to establish changes in local metal pollution, particularly if metal loadings in the river Vistula (draining into the Gulf) alter in the future. The study highlighted differences in trace metal bioavailabilities to both barnacles and mussels, geographically and over time. Accumulated metal concentrations of Cu, Zn, Fe, Pb and Ni, but not Cd or Mn, were correlated in the barnacles and mussels, suggesting that the bioavailabilities of the former metals to the two biomonitors were similar. The barnacles showed greater discriminatory power than the mussels as trace metal biomonitors. Concentrations of trace metals in surficial sediments (<63 m) did not correlate significantly with accumulated metal concentrations in either barnacles or mussels, indicating that sediment metal concentrations are not necessarily good proxy measures of ambient trace metal bioavailabilities to the local coastal filter feeders.Communicated by J.P. Suspension-feeding bivalves are organisms of major functional importance in several aquatic environments around the world. They are also important food items for many fish and benthivorous seabirds. It has commonly been thought that predation pressure on blue mussel (Mytilus edulis) populations is negligible in the Baltic Sea, owing to the scarcity of major invertebrate predators such as starfish and crabs. It has recently been shown, however, that the blue mussel is the main food item for roach (Rutilus rutilus) in the archipelago areas of the western Gulf of Finland, where this freshwater fish species has become increasingly abundant, mainly due to increased eutrophication. To quantify the influence of roach predation on blue mussel populations we measured the standing biomass and size structure of the local blue mussel population and used a bioenergetic model to estimate mussel consumption by individual roach during two consecutive summers, 1997 and 1998. The results of the model were combined with existing data on roach abundance, giving annual consumption estimates of 75–105 kg blue mussel dry weight ha–1 in the study area, approximately two-thirds of these consumed mussels being >10 mm. This corresponds to approximately one-third of the standing population of mussels >10 mm in the area. Our results suggest that the predation effects of vertebrates on Baltic blue mussel populations are not insignificant, as previously believed. Predation by roach and other predators may have an important structuring effect on unstable blue mussel communities within the Gulf of Finland, where the species lives at the edge of its range.Communicated by M.
