The genotoxic potential of Rouen University Hospital wastewater was evaluated by the SOS chromotest (on Escherichia coli PQ37) and Ames fluctuation test on Salmonella typhimurium strains TA 98 and TA 100 without metabolic activation. The samples were taken during the hospital maximal activity period (8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.) over three one-week periods of the year. The simultaneous use of SOS chromotest and Ames fluctuation test allows us to carry out a preliminary screening of the hospital wastewater and to gain some insight by which mechanism the genotoxic compounds act. Out of a total of 18 daytime unconcentrated samples tested, 10 (55%) are positive in at least one assay. The two tests have different sensitivity. Indeed, nine genotoxic samples (50%) are detected by the Ames test, and four (22%) by the SOS chromotest. Distribution and intensity of the genotoxic response are different at the three periods. In order to explain this phenomenon, the influence of the rain levels is discussed. This work showed that the hospital wastewater samples tested were overall genotoxic, the response intensity being inflected by the pluviometry. Efforts are now under way to try to identify one or several genotoxic compounds in order to take precautionary measures to limit their release in hospital wastewaters.  相似文献

The mutagenic activity bioassay Mutatox was used to assess the mutagenic activity associated with sediments collected from five UK estuaries. Assays were performed on extracts of sediment pore water and residual particulate material isolated from sediment samples collected from the rivers Tyne, Tees, Mersey, and Thames as well as Southampton Water. No mutagenic activity was associated with the pore water extracts, however, 7 of the 28 organic solvent extracts of sediment particulate material contained potential genotoxins. By using Mutatox in association with bioassay-directed fractionation, attempts were made to identify the mutagenic compounds present in the extracts. The fractionation procedure used normal phase solid phase extraction, C18 reverse phase HPLC and cyano/amino bonded silica normal phase HPLC. GC-MS (EI and NICI) analysis was used to identify polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), alkyl substituted PAH, nitro-polycyclic aromatic compounds (nitro-PACs), polycyclic aromatic ketones, oxygenated-PACs, and other known mutagens contributing to the genotoxicity measured in the samples. Some potentially genotoxic compounds remain unidentified.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to evaluate the Ames assay and mixed function oxidase (MFO)-Induct Test used in parallel with chemical group tests (ECD fingerprint and PAH estimation) for the characterization of the organic pollution of water sediment materials. Sediment materials were collected from “clean” and relatively heavily polluted locations in the Middle Adriatic Sea, and from some locations in continental Croatia polluted with wastewaters from different enterprises. Characterization of the organic extracts of the sediment materials investigated was performed chemically using UV spectrofluorometry for the determination polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and gas chromatography for the determination of volatile EC detector sensitive materials. Genotoxic analysis of the extracts was performed using the MFO-Induct Test and mutagenicity testing using the Standard Plate Incorporation Test as described by Maron and Ames with Salmonella typhimurium TA 98. Measurement of the BaPMO enzyme activity in the livers of carp treated i.p. with total extracts of the sediment investigated confirmed that the methanol extracts generally contained more inducing matter than the petroleum ether extracts. Ames assay showed that for all the samples following the elimination of the sulfur, there was an increase in the number of revertants in comparison to the control number, which indicates that the samples contained mutagenic substances. The larger doses of extracts generally demonstrated cytotoxicity, as evidenced by a reduced number of spontaneous revertants in the Salmonella/Microsome Test. Investigation of the correlation of the chemical parameters with the biological parameter showed that the induction of BaPMO exhibited a statistically significant correlation with the level of the ECD fingerprint of the petroleum ether sediment extract.  相似文献

Organic extracts of marine sediments from the North Sea and the Baltic Sea were investigated with two toxicity assays. The comet assay based on the fish cell line Epithelioma papulosum cyprini (EPC) was applied to determine the genotoxic potential; zebrafish embryos (Danio rerio) were used to quantify the teratogenic potential of the samples. EC(50) values were calculated from dose-response curves for both test systems. Highest teratogenic and genotoxic effects normalised to total organic carbon (TOC) content were detected in sediment samples of different origins. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are not likely to be the causes of the observed effects, as demonstrated by a two-step fractionation procedure of selected extracts. The toxic potential was more pronounced in fractions having polarity higher than those possessed by PAHs and PCBs. The suitability of the two in vitro test systems for assessing genotoxic and teratogenic effects of marine sediment extracts could be demonstrated.  相似文献

Abstract

Ambient air particulate matter less than 2.5 μm in aerodynamic diameter (PM2.5) samples were collected during summer and autumn using a Staplex high-volume air sampler. They were later extracted with dichloromethane in a Soxhlet apparatus. Polyaromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) content in extracts was determined by the high-performance liquid chromatography technique using fluorescence detection, whereas the nitro-PAH content was determined by gas chromatography using mass detection. Four Salmonella typhimurium strains (TA98, TA100, YG1041, and YG1042) were used in assays conducted with and without metabolic activation. The extracts were also tested with the SOS chromotest supplied by Environmental Biodetection Products Incorporated. The obtained results confirmed the Salmonella assay and the SOS chromotest usability for the purpose of atmospheric pollution monitoring within an urban agglomeration. The atmospheric pollution extracts under examination differed among each other regarding total content and percentage of individual compounds, depending on the season of sampling. The highest total PAH content and the highest nitro-PAH content in the tested samples as well as the most extensive range of detected compounds were found in the autumn season (heating season). The highest mutagenicity was noted for PM2.5 samples collected in autumn. The high values of mutagenicity ratios and induction factors were obtained from assays carried out with and without metabolic activation, which is an argument for the presence of promutagens and direct mutagens. The YG1041 strain proved to be the most effective in detection of mutagenicity of the suspended dust extracts because of its notably high sensitivity to nitro-aromatic compounds. The SOS chromotest was very sensitive to a large spectrum of genotoxic air pollutants and showed a high degree of similarity with the results of the Salmonella assay. In comparison with the frequently used Ames test, the SOS chromotest enables quick analysis of the genotoxic effects of samples using only one tester strain. In addition, its miniaturized design decreases the consumption of tested samples.  相似文献

Bottom sediment and suspended sediment samples from Hamilton Harbour (western Lake Ontario) and from a major tributary were profiled using a bioassay-directed fractionation approach. Sample extracts were fractionated using an alumina/Sephadex gel clean-up procedure to afford non-polar aromatic fractions which were characterized using chemical analyses and the Ames/microsome bacterial assay in Salmonella typhimurium strains YG1025 with the addition of oxidative metabolism (S9), and YG1024 without S9. Non-polar aromatic fractions of selected samples were separated by normal phase HPLC into 1-min fractions which were subjected to bioassay analyses. The bioassays using strain YG1025+S9, a TA100-type strain, were performed to assess genotoxicity arising from the presence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). Fractions which exhibited mutagenic activity contained PAH with molecular masses of 252, 276 and 278 amu; these fractions contained over 80% of the genotoxicity attributable to PAH. Individual compounds identified using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry analyses in these active fractions included benzo[a]pyrene, indeno[cd]pyrene and dibenz[a,h]anthracene. The YG1025+S9 mutagenic activity profiles were similar for all samples. Mutagenic activity profiles generated using strain YG1024-S9, a TA98-type strain sensitive to compounds characteristic of mobile source emissions, were very different. The mutagenic activities in strain YG1024-S9 were greatest for harbour-suspended sediment samples collected from sites impacted by a major tributary. Suspended sediments collected near areas known to contain high levels of coal tar-contamination in the bottom sediments contained higher levels of genotoxic PAH than suspended sediments collected from other areas of the harbour.  相似文献

Pharmaceutical products for humans and animals, as well as their related metabolites end up in the aquatic environment after use. Recent investigations show that concentrations of pharmaceuticals are detectable in the order of ng/l-mug/l in municipal wastewater, groundwater and also drinking water. Little is known about the effects, and the hazard of long-term exposure to low concentrations of pharmaceuticals for non-target aquatic organisms. This study was designed to assess the ecotoxicity of furosemide, a potent diuretic agent, and its photoproduct in the aquatic environment. Bioassays were performed on bacteria, algae, rotifers and microcrustaceans to assess acute and chronic toxicity, while the SOS Chromotest and the Ames test were utilized to detect the genotoxic potential of the investigated compounds. A first approach to risk characterization was to calculate the environmental impact of furosemide by measured environmental concentration and predicted no effect concentration ratio (MEC/PNEC). To do so we used occurrence data reported in the literature and our toxicity results. The results showed that acute toxicity was in the order of mg/l for the crustaceans and absent for bacteria and rotifers. Chronic exposure to these compounds caused inhibition of growth population on the consumers, while the algae did not seem to be affected. A mutagenic potential was found for the photoproduct compared to the parental compound suggesting that byproducts ought to be considered in the environmental assessment of drugs. The risk calculated for furosemide suggested its harmlessness on the aquatic compartment.  相似文献

The genotoxic effects of different size fractions of airborne particulate (Total, PM10 and PM2.5), extracted with acetone or toluene, were evaluated by: the Ames plate test (TA98 and TA100 strains, w/o S9), gene conversion and reversion (w/o endogenous metabolic activation) in the Saccharomyces cerevisiae D7 strain, and the comet assay on human leukocytes. The data on human leukocytes confirm the sensitivity of the comet assay and its applicability to assess genotoxicity in environmental samples. The PM2.5 fraction of airborne particulate generally shows the highest concentration of DNA-damaging compounds. Genotoxic response, in all the test systems applied, is highly dependent on extraction solvent used. Acetone seems to extract compounds with more similar genotoxic responses in the three test systems used than toluene extracts. Toluene appears to extract air pollutants genotoxic on yeast and leukocytes but is mainly cytotoxic on Salmonella.  相似文献

The SOS/umuC assay was performed in conjunction with analytical measurements to identify potential genotoxins in river and adjacent ground waters in the Jialu River basin, China. The major genotoxic activities of the river and adjacent ground waters occurred in the same two fractions (F4 and F11) when assayed using the Salmonella typhimurium strain TA1535/pSK1002. This indicates that ground water near the Jialu River was influenced by the river water. LC-MS/MS analysis indicated that flumequine accounted for 86% and 76% of the genotoxicity in fraction F11 of the river and adjacent ground waters, respectively. When HPLC fractions were tested using the strain NM3009, three fractions showed genotoxic activities for river water sample, while no fractions from ground water samples elicited genotoxic activities. The specific response to the strain NM3009 in one fraction compared with the strain TA1535/pSK1002 suggested the presence of nitroarenes. However, we failed to identify the exact nitroarenes when GC-MS analysis was used to analyze nitroarenes which are well detected in air and soil samples in previous papers.  相似文献

Bioassays are widely used to estimate ecological risks of contaminated sediments. We compared the results of three whole sediment bioassays, using the midge larva Chironomus riparius, the water louse Asellus aquaticus, and the mayfly nymph Ephoron virgo. We used sediments from sixteen locations in the Dutch Rhine-Meuse Delta that differed in level of contamination. Previously developed protocols for each bioassay were followed, which differed in sediment pretreatment, replication, and food availability. The Chironomus bioassay was conducted in situ, whereas the other two were conducted in the laboratory. The measured endpoints, survival and growth, were related to contaminant levels in the sediment and to food quantity in water and sediment.

Only the response of A. aquaticus in the bioassay was correlated with sediment contamination. Food availability in overlying water was much more important for C. riparius and E. virgo, thereby masking potential sediment contaminant effects. We conclude that growth of A. aquaticus was depressed by sediment contamination, whereas growth of E. virgo and C. riparius was stimulated by seston food quantity. We discuss that the trophic state of the ecosystem largely affects the ecological risks of contaminated sediments.  相似文献

Soil screening could be a process of identifying and defining areas, contaminants, and condition at the sites that warrant further attention for developing ecological risk assessments. In present work, a total of 41 surface soil samples from Tianjin, China were sampled and the soil organic extracts were evaluated using a battery of in vitro cell bioassays. The battery included ethoxyresorfin O-deethylase (EROD) with H4IIE rat hepatoma cells bioassay for Aryl hydrocarbon (Ah) receptor (Ah-agonists) effects, the SOS/umu bioassay for genotoxic effects, and human estrogen receptor recombinant yeast bioassay for estrogenic effects. The results have showed that total estrogenic effects in these soil samples was measured to be between 0.1 and 14.2ng EEQkg(-1) soil (d.w.); Ah-agonists effects assayed by EROD bioassay varied from 2.8ng TEQkg(-1) soil (d.w.) to 42.6ng TEQkg(-1) soil (d.w.), and the amounts of soil weight required for the extracts to lead positive result (IR 2.0) in the SOS/umu bioassay were between 3.9 and 31.3mg (d.w.) per well. In addition, the geographic distributions of Ah-agonists effects and genotoxic effects in Tianjin area exhibited a strong positive correlation with each other. However, the distribution of estrogenic effects with high levels in northwest Tianjin was markedly different from that of Ah-agonists effects, where the high levels were distributed in the urban of Tianjin, as well as coastal towns. It has been concluded that the toxicity assessment of surface soil using a battery of in vitro cell bioassays could provided meaningful information regarding characterization procedure in ecological risk assessment.  相似文献

To evaluate the genotoxic risk that contaminated sediment could constitute for benthic organisms, three contaminated (VA, VC and VN) and one uncontaminated (RN) sediment samples were collected in the Berre lagoon (France). Potentially bioavailable contaminants in sediments were obtained using sediment extraction with synthetic seawater adjusted to pH 4 or pH 6, simulating the range of pH prevailing in the digestive tract of benthic organisms. The genotoxic activities of these extracts were evaluated by three short-term bioassays: the Salmonella mutagenicity test using the Salmonella typhimurium strain TA102, the alkaline comet assay and the micronucleus assay on the Chinese Hamster Ovary cells CHO-K1. Results of the Salmonella mutagenicity assay detected a mutagenic response for RN extract at pH 6, and for VA extract at pH 4. Results of the comet and micronucleus assays detected low genotoxic/clastogenic activities for VA and VC extracts at pH 6 and higher activities for RN, VA and VC extracts at pH 4. To identify if metals (Al, Fe, Mn, As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb and Zn) were involved in these genotoxic activities, their concentrations were determined in the extracts, and their speciation was assessed by thermodynamic calculations. Results showed that extracts from sites VA, VC and VN generally presented the highest trace metal contents for both extractants, while the site RN presented lower trace metal contents but the highest Fe and Mn contents. Thermodynamic calculations indicated that Fe, Mn, As and in a lower extend Co, Ni and Zn were mainly present under free forms in extracts, and were consequently, more likely able to induce a genotoxic effect. Results globally showed no correspondence between free metal contents and genotoxic activities. They suggested that these positive results could be due to uncharacterized compounds, acting as direct genotoxic agents or enhancing the genotoxic properties of analyzed metals.  相似文献

The usefulness of two surrogate methods for rapidly determining the bioavailability of PAHs in hydrocarbon-contaminated marine sediments was assessed. Comparisons are made between the PAHs accumulated by the benthic bivalve, Tellina deltoidalis, and the extractable-PAHs determined using a 6-h XAD-2 resin desorption method and a 4-h gut fluid mimic (GFM) extraction method. There were significant positive relationships between PAH bioaccumulation by the bivalves and sediment PAH concentrations. These relationships were not improved by normalising the sediment PAH concentrations to the organic carbon concentration. The average percentage lipid content of the bivalves was 1.47 ± 0.22% and BSAFs for total-PAHs ranged from 0.06 to 0.80 (kg OC/kg lipid). The XAD-2 and GFM methods both extracted varying amounts of PAHs from the sediments. Low concentrations of PAHs were extracted by the GFM method (0.2–3.6% of total-PAHs in sediments) and the GFM results were inadequate for generalising about the bioavailability of the PAHs in the sediments. The XAD-2 method extracted greater amounts of PAHs (3–34% of total-PAHs in sediments), however, the total-PAH concentrations in the sediments provided a better, or equally good, prediction of PAH bioaccumulation by T. deltoidalis. The results indicated that these methods required further development before they can be applied routinely as surrogate methods for assessing the bioavailability of PAHs in sediments. Future research should be directed towards lowering detection limits and obtaining comparative data for a greater range of sediment types, contaminant classes and concentrations, and organisms of different feeding guilds and with different gut chemistry.  相似文献

In this work, the main objectives were to assess the mutagenic and genotoxic effects of fine particulate matter collected in an industrial influenced site in comparison with a non-industrial influenced one (rural site) and to relate the particulate matter (PM) composition to the observed genotoxic effects. At the industrial influenced site, higher concentrations of phosphates, trace metals, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in particles could be related to the contributions of quarries, fertilizer producer, cement plants, and tires burning. Gasoline and diesel combustion contributions were evidenced in particles collected at both sites. Particles collected under industrial influence showed a higher mutagenic potential on three tested strains of Salmonella typhimurium (TA98, YG1041, and TA102), and especially on the YG1041, compared to particles from the rural site. Furthermore, only particles collected in the vicinity of the industrial site showed a tendency to activate the SOS responses in Escherichia coli PQ37, which is indicative of DNA damage as a result of exposure of the bacteria cells to the action of mutagenic samples. The mutagenicity and genotoxicity of the industrial PM2.5–0.3 particulates may be attributed to its composition especially in organic compounds. This study showed that proximity of industries can affect local PM composition as well as PM genotoxic and mutagenic potential.  相似文献

In China, the safety of drinking water becomes a significant issue due to serious aquatic environmental pollution. The genotoxic levels of raw and finished water from seven typical waterworks located in the five basins in China were then evaluated using umu test. Effect of conventional treatment processes (coagulation, filtration and disinfection) on the genotoxicity and the fate of dissolved organic matter (DOM) was discussed. The results showed that most of the selected finished water presented genotoxicity at or lower than 300 mL water sample exposure dose. The genotoxic effects of finished water were significantly higher than those of raw water. It also exhibited that there existed higher correlation between genotoxic effect and Br(-) than the other water quality parameters. The brominated trihalomethanes played a more important role in finished water genotoxicity than brominated haloacetic acids. The treatment processes could increase the genotoxic effects of finished water, especially for the chlorination treatment. The fluorescence spectra and high performance size-exclusion chromatogram analysis of DOM characters indicated that the proportion of low molecular weight acids, nitrogen containing aromatics, proteinaceous and microbially derived organic matters (200-300 Da) increased during purification processes, which indicated probably the release or formation of drinking water genotoxins.  相似文献

Evaporation basins (or ponds) are the most commonly used facilities for disposal of selenium-laden saline agricultural drainage in the closed hydrologic basin portion of the San Joaquin Valley, California. However concerns remain for potential risk from selenium (Se) toxicity to water fowl in these evaporation basins. In this study, we examined the chemical status of Se in both waters and sediments in two currently operating evaporation pond facilities in the Tulare Lake Drainage District. Some of the saline ponds have been colonized by brine-shrimp (Artemia), which have been harvested since 2001. We evaluated Se concentration and speciation, including selenate [Se(VI)], selenite [Se(IV)], and organic Se [org-Se or Se(-II)] in waters and sediment extracts, and fractionation (soluble, adsorbed, organic matter (OM)-associated, and Se(0) and other resistant forms) in sediments and organic-rich surface detrital layers from the decay of algal blooms. Selenium in ponds without vascular plants exhibited similar behavior to wetlands with vascular plant present, indicating that similar Se transformation processes and mechanisms had resulted in Se immobilization and an increase of reduced Se species [Se(IV), org-Se, and Se(0)] from Se(VI)-dominated input waters. Selenium concentrations in most pond waters were significantly lower than the influent drainage water. This decrease of dissolved Se concentration was accompanied by the increase of reduced Se species. Selenium accumulated preferentially in sediments of the initial pond cell receiving drainage water. Brine-shrimp harvesting activities did not affect Se speciation but may have reduced Se accumulation in surface detrital and sediments.  相似文献

The toxicities and bioavailabilities of total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) in aquatic systems have made them the subjects of recent research. In this study, we collected a lake sediment core from Ny-Ålesund in Svalbard and analyzed the distributions of THg and MeHg in the sediments. The increased trend of THg was caused by anthropogenic contamination since the 14th century through long-range transportation, especially after the industrial era. However, the peak values of Hg in surface sediment samples could be explained by the increased algal scavenging process in recent decades. All the biogeochemical proxies (e.g., pigments and diatom biomass) revealed recent sharp increases in aquatic primary production due to the current climate warming. Rock-Eval analyses indicated that algal-derived organic matter took up a large portion, and quantitative calculation showed that 89.6-95.8% of the Hg in post-1950 could be explained by scavenging. The distribution of MeHg has a close relationship with total Hg and organic matter. The oxidation-reduction condition is one of the possible factors affecting the methylation rates in H2 lake sediments. Higher algal productivity and organic matter actually led to the increased trend of methylation in the uppermost sediment. This study supports some new key hypotheses on climate-driven factors affecting Hg and MeHg cycling in High Arctic lake sediments.  相似文献

The (geno)toxicity of sediment dichloromethane extracts and fractions obtained by size exclusion chromatography were evaluated to investigate effects based on size fractionation. In this study, three sediments were selected according to their incremental contamination in PAHs and in PCBs: Hamilton harbour, Toronto bay and lake St. Clair sediments. Heavy metals, total sulfur and elemental sulfur (S8) were also determined in the (un)fractionated sediment extracts. The liver cells were exposed to concentrations of sediment extracts and fractionated samples for 24 h at 15 degrees C, afterwhich cell viability, cytochrome P4501A1 activity, available free Zn, DNA damage and oxidative stress were determined. The results showed that the sediment extracts contained high levels of sulfur most of which was found in the low molecular weight (LMW) region, i.e., the 2000-50 atomic mass unit (amu) fraction. Elemental sulfur (S8) accounted for 14-41% of extractable sulfur and were found to elute in the post-column volume (PCV) fraction despite its molecular weight of 256 amu. Heavy metals were found mainly in the HMW (i.e. the > 2000 amu) fraction and LMW fractions and very few or none were observed in the PCV fractions. In sediment extracts, sublethal effects were present principally by the HMW and LMW fractions suggesting that some chemicals were also associated with high molecular weight compounds of extractable organic matter. Less toxicity or effect was sometimes found in the extract indicating an antagonistic effect of the contaminants. We found that cell viability and genotoxicity evaluations could be performed on the unfractionated extracts while EROD, available Zn and oxidative stress measurements should be performed on the LMW fractions because of possible antagonist or shielding effects. Considering the cytotoxic responses, the best toxicity ranking in respect to contaminant levels in sediment extract was obtained with the LMW and PCV fractions which accounted for most of the toxic responses in the chromatographic fractions. Moreover, the shielding effect could be explained, in part, by the association of LMW contaminants to large macromolecules.  相似文献

Korean water quality managers are required to promptly develop national assessment standards for freshwater sediment quality due to the Four Major River Restoration Project in Korea in 2009. We conducted this study to develop sediment management standards (SMSs), determining obviously and severely polluted sediment, which could have adverse impacts on water quality and aquatic ecosystem. The SMSs values were derived from the 95th percentile of concentration distribution for organic matter and nutrients in sediment quality database. For the SMSs of metals, foreign sediment quality guidelines (SQGs) were adopted. As a result, 13 % for loss on ignition (LOI), 1,600 mg/kg for total phosphorus (TP), and 5,600 mg/kg for total nitrogen (TN) were set as the SMSs for freshwater sediment in Korea. These values were higher than the range of heavily polluted sediment from USEPA Region 5 guideline derived by the similar approaches for the Great Lakes harbor sediments, and similar or lower than the severe effect level (SEL) from provincial sediment quality guideline (PSQG) of Ontario, Canada by screening level concentration (SLC) approach. However, SMSs in the present study are appropriate considering the concentration ranges and the Korean SMSs’ definition for freshwater sediments in Korea. The Puget Sound marine sediment cleanup screening level (CSL) in Washington State, USA were adopted as the Korean SMSs for As (93 mg/kg), Cd (6.7 mg/kg), Cr (270 mg/kg), Cu (390 mg/kg), Pb (530 mg/kg), and Zn (960 mg/kg) in freshwater sediments. Hg concentration (0.59 mg/kg) of CSL was too low to determine the polluted freshwater sediments in Korea, and the SEL of Ontario, Canada for mercury concentration (2 mg/kg) was selected as the SMS for Hg. These values were found reasonable through the assessment of applicability with the datasets from locations directly affected by obvious point sources. These results indicate that SMSs for organic matter, nutrient, and metals derived within the present study can successfully determine obviously and severely polluted sediment in Korea. However, the SMSs have limits to specifically determine the effects of polluted sediment on water quality and aquatic ecosystem in Korea. Thus, we will revise and specify SMSs considering those effects and further sediment quality assessment framework in the near future.  相似文献

The freshwater amphipod, Hyalella azteca, is widely used in laboratory sediment toxicity and bioaccumulation tests. However, its responses in the laboratory are probably very different from those in the field. A review of the literature indicates that in its natural habitat this species complex is primarily epibenthic, derives little nutrition from the sediments, and responds primarily to contaminants in the overlying water column (including water and food), not sediment or porewater. In laboratory sediment toxicity tests H. azteca is deprived of natural food sources such as algal communities on or above the sediments, and is subjected to constant light without any cover except that afforded by burial into the sediments. Under these constraining laboratory conditions, H. azteca has been reported to respond to sediment or porewater contamination. In nature, contamination of overlying water from sediment is less likely than in the laboratory because of the large, generally non-static sink of natural surface water. H. azteca does not appear to be the most appropriate test species for direct assessments of the bioavailability and toxicity of sediment contaminants, though it is probably appropriate for testing the toxicity of surface waters. Toxic and non-toxic responses will be highly conservative, though the latter are probably the most persuasive given the exposure constraints. Thus H. azteca is probably a suitable surrogate species for determining sediments that are likely not toxic to field populations; however, it is not suitable for determining sediments that are likely toxic to field populations.  相似文献
