The Russian River-Cooper Lake-Resurrection River trail system, on the Kenai Peninsula, Alaska, traverses essential brown bear
habitat. To set management guidelines for this area, the trail system was monitored using questionnaire cards and electronic
trail counters from 1984 through 1987. This helped to determine the extent and type of human use and human-bear encounters
in the area. Management recommendations were intended to reduce the potential displacement of brown bears by hikers and to
inform wilderness users of the proper camping techniques to avoid attracting bears to the campsite. An average of 5800 visitors
hiked or camped along the trail system each year. Encounters between hikers and brown bears averaged 7/yr while encounters
with black bears averaged 35/yr. Minor problems occurred with both the electronic trail counters and the questionnaire. Modilications
to these methods are discussed. A Limits of Acceptable Change format should be considered for the trail system to determine
the character and future direction of recreational activities and monitoring of the trail system should continue in the future. 相似文献

Defining acceptable conditions in wilderness 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
The limits of acceptable change (LAC) planning framework recognizes that forest managers must decide what indicators of wilderness
conditions best represent resource naturalness and high-quality visitor experiences and how much change from the pristine
is acceptable for each indicator. Visitor opinions on the aspects of the wilderness that have great impact on their experience
can provide valuable input to selection of indicators. Cohutta, Georgia; Caney Creek, Arkansas; Upland Island, Texas; and
Rattlesnake, Montana, wilderness visitors have high shared agreement that littering and damage to trees in campsites, noise,
and seeing wildlife are very important influences on wilderness experiences. Camping within sight or sound of other people
influences experience quality more than do encounters on the trails. Visitors’ standards of acceptable conditions within wilderness
vary considerably, suggesting a potential need to manage different zones within wilderness for different clientele groups
and experiences. Standards across wildernesses, however, are remarkably similar. 相似文献

Many European countries, including Norway, have a right of common access tradition toward wildland areas for recreational
activity. The “right of any one to move freely over all wildlands except farm fields and gardens” can serve as a paradoxical
barrier to managing wildland areas and users for outdoor recreation. This article discusses the apparent paradox between free
access and management of wildland recreation, the underlying principles of both concepts, and proposes an integrative basis
for how the two concepts can serve the same major goal—freedom of access and use of wildland recreation areas without disturbance
to other users or the resource base. A Norwegian field study is presented with campfire data and management strategies to
illustrate the integrative nature of common access and wilderness management principles for the managing of wildland recreation
opportunities. 相似文献

The designation and management of federal wilderness areas has generated much controversy in the United States. The decade
of the 1980s has been a difficult one for public land managers as there has been growing opposition to their traditional “conserve
but use philosophy.” Public lands are to be managed for the public benefit. Unfortunately there has been little survey research
to find out what the attitudes of the public are towards the management of federally designated wilderness. We report the
results of a national survey of 2670 residents of wilderness counties. We found that the presence of wilderness is an important
reason why 53% of the people moved to or live in the area; 81% felt that wilderness areas are important to their counties;
and 65% were against mineral or energy development in wilderness areas. On some issues there was less agreement as 43% of
the respondents wanted more access to wilderness, and 39% were in favor of additional wilderness with 26% undecided. There
were no large differences between counties and regions despite the differences in economic and social characteristics and
the historical contexts within which they evolved. 相似文献

Using data from a study conducted in the Cranberry Wilderness Area of West Virginia, United States, this paper describes how
a modified importance—performance approach can be used to prioritize wilderness indicators and determine how much change from
the pristine is acceptable. The approach uses two key types of information: (1) indicator importance, or visitor opinion as
to which wilderness indicators have the greatest influence on their experience, and (2) management performance, or the extent
to which actual indicator conditions exceed or are within visitor expectations. Performance was represented by calculating
indicator performance estimates (IPEs), as defined by standardized differences between actual conditions and visitor preferences
for each indicator. The results for each indicator are then presented graphically on a four-quadrant matrix for objective
interpretation. Each quadrant represents a management response: keep up the good work, concentrate here, low priority, or
possible overkill. The technique allows managers to more systematically and effectively utilize information routinely collected
during the limits of acceptable change wilderness planning process.
This paper is submitted with the approval of the Director of the West Virginia Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station
as Scientific Article No. 541. The study was funded in part, through a grant from the USDA Forest Service, Monongahela National
Forest. 相似文献

A standard campsite model is proposed and then manipulated to examine the influence of individual variables on amount of vegetation
loss. Amount of impact is influenced by amount of use, vegetation fragility, vegetation density, and the degree to which activities
are concentrated spatially on the site. Degree of concentration also influences the importance of the other explanatory variables.
Amount of use and vegetation fragility are equally important determinants of impact and are most influential where activity
concentration is low. The curvilinear relationship between amount of use and amount of impact can be explained by the tendency
for activities to become increasingly concentrated as amount of use increases. This relationship should not vary with regional
or environmental characteristics except where these influence degree of activity concentration. 相似文献

Legally designated wilderness areas are acknowledged to be an important element in strategies to conserve biological diversity
in United States. However, because of the restrictions on consumptive uses in wilderness, their establishment is normally
contentious. Criteria for establishment have typically been associated with opportunity and aesthetic and experiential values.
Biological data have not normally played a major role in guiding wilderness establishment. We present four wilderness allocation
options for those public lands considered suitable for wilderness designation in Idaho. These options cover the span of choices
presently available to wilderness planners in the state and range from not establishing any new wilderness areas to the inclusion
of all suitable lands in wilderness. All options are evaluated using spatial biological data from the National Biological
Survey's Gap Analysis Project. A conservation strategy that would protect a minimum of 10% of the area occupied by each of
113 native vegetation types and at a minimum 10% of the distribution of each of 368 vertebrate species was evaluated for each
option. Only the inclusion of all suitable lands in wilderness, creating a system of 5.1 million ha came close to achieving
these goals, protecting 65% of the vegetation types and 56% of the vertebrate species. We feel this approach, which allows
planners to evaluate the ecological merits of proposed widerness units along with other values, can provide a means to resolve
the impasse over additional wilderness designation in Idaho. 相似文献

Application of the wilderness travel simulation model to the Appalachian Trail in Vermont 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The wilderness travel simulation model estimates complex recreation use patterns in park and wilderness environments. The model was applied to a section of the Appalachian Trail in Vermont, a linear, long-distance, multiple-access trail system characteristic of the eastern United States. Many portions of the trail, including the study area, are now experiencing high use. The model estimated the average number of trail encounters per party day to be 3.3 and the average number of camp encounters per party night to be 2.3. Other measures of recreation use were also estimated that should prove useful to trail management and administration. Three trail management scenarios were tested, providing several preliminary insights to managers: the desirability of use redistributions as opposed to across-the-board reductions and needed emphasis on spatial use patterns and campsite encounters. Only minor modifications to the program were needed in applying the model to the trail environment and the model functioned accurately according to the validity tests performed. 相似文献

A number of studies at land-based parks have indicated that trip information from permit itineraries does not always coincide
with actual user behavior. To assess the effectiveness of the fixed-itinerary system at a water-based park, this study examined
discrepancies between the itineraries recorded on permits and those reported by overnight users following their visits to
Everglades National Park; it also assessed day visitors' reported use of backcountry campsites. Motorboaters were more likely
to comply with their permit itinerary than canoeists (76% and 66% compliance rate, respectively). More than one-fourth of
day users reported stopping at a backcountry campsite. Respondents reported that sharing campsites with noncomplying campers
affected their backcountry experience in either a positive (3%), negative (11%), or neutral (9%) manner. 相似文献

Recreational use of wilderness results in impacts to vegetation and soil in trails and campsites. Traditionally, campsite impact studies have compared campsites receiving various levels of use with unused control areas. Field studies in Sequoia National Park, California, indicate that the degree of impact to vegetation and soils also varies within campsites. The central areas of campsites, where trampling is concentrated, show lower plant species diversity, differences in relative species cover, more highly compacted soils, and lower soil nutrient concentrations than do peripheral, moderately trampled, and untrampled areas within the same campsite. Three years after closure to visitor use, the central areas show less increase in mean foliar plant cover, and soils remain more highly compacted than in previously moderately trampled areas of the same sites. Changes in relative species cover over time are used to assess both resiliency to trampling and species composition recovery within campsites closed to visitor use. 相似文献

Waters derived from remote 'wilderness' locations have been assumed to be largely free of bacterial contamination and thus such, near-pristine, protected catchments, unused for agriculture, have been first in the multiple line of protection (pristine catchment-long storage-treatment-disinfection) employed by the water industry. This assumption is challenged by a bacterial survey of the waters derived from the New Cairngorm National Park, Scotland. Over 480 spot samples were taken for 59 sites between March 2001 and October 2002 during nine field campaigns each of three to five days duration. Over 75% of samples tested positive for Escherichia coli (E. coli) and 85% for total coliforms. Concentrations displayed both temporal and spatial patterns. Largest values occurred over the summer months and particularly at weekends at sites frequented by visitors, either for 'wild' camping or day visits, or where water was drawn from the river for drinking. Overall the spatial and temporal variations in bacterial concentrations suggest a relationship with visitor numbers and in particular wild camping. The implications of the results for drinking water quality and visitors health are discussed along with possible management options for the area in terms of improving the disposal of human waste. 相似文献

The wilderness use simulation model applied to Colorado River boating in Grand Canyon National Park,USA 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A modification of the Shechter-Lucas Wilderness Use Simulation Model (WUSM) for peak season boating on the Colorado River through Grand Canyon National Park, USA, is evaluated as a tool for making management decisions. A new microcomputer program to select trip itineraries for inclusion in the WUSM that was developed as part of this study is presented. This program simplifies user input and expands the WUSM's usefulness as a tool for management decisions by randomizing itinerary schedules based on probabilities developed from actual use of sites by canyon visitors. Model usefulness is demonstrated by simulating various management changes and comparing use levels of attraction sites and campgrounds as well as numbers of encounters between parties. The WUSM is being used as part of an ongoing study, to reflect the impact of fluctuating flow regimes through the turbines at Glen Canyon Dam on river trips. 相似文献

Research shows that users and managers have different perceptions of acceptable policies that ration or limit recreational
use on rivers. The acceptability of seven rationing policies was evaluated using Thurstone's method of paired comparisons,
which provided a rank ordering of advance reservation, lottery, first-come/first-served, merit, priority for first time users,
zoning, and price. Chi-squared tests were used to determine if users and managers have significantly different levels of acceptability
for the policies. River users and managers were found to be significantly different according to their evaluation of advance
reservation, zoning, and merit. The results also indicated that river users collectively divide the policies into three categories
corresponding to high, moderate, and low levels of acceptability, while river managers divide the policies into two levels
corresponding to acceptable and unacceptable. 相似文献

Impacts of Camping on Vegetation: Response and Recovery Following Acute and Chronic Disturbance 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Experiments with controlled levels of recreational camping were conducted on previously undisturbed sites in two different plant communities in the subalpine zone of the Wind River Mountains, Wyoming, USA. The plant communities were coniferous forest with understory dominated by the low shrub Vaccinium scoparium and a riparian meadow of intermixed grasses and forbs, of which Deschampsia cespitosa was most abundant. Sites were camped on at intensities of either one or four nights per year, for either one (acute disturbance) or three consecutive years (chronic disturbance). Recovery was followed for three years on sites camped on for one year and for one year on sites camped on for three years. Reductions in vegetation cover and vegetation height were much more pronounced on sites in the forest than on sites in the meadow. In both plant communities, increases in vegetation impact were not proportional to increases in either years of camping or nights per year of camping. Close to the center of campsites, near-maximum levels of impact occurred after the first year of camping on forested sites and after the second year on meadow sites. Meadow sites recovered completely within a year, at the camping intensities employed in the experiments. Forest sites, even those camped on for just one night, did not recover completely within three years. Differences between acute and chronic disturbance were not pronounced. 相似文献

Surface disposal of human waste by the smear method, a suggested but heretofore unexamined technique, was tested in three environments and examined for reductions in fecal mass and fecal indicator bacteria. Substantial reduction in fecal mass was observed after six and fourteen weeks of exposure in all environments, but extensive reduction in fecal indicator bacteria was observed in only the arid and alpine environments. Although surface smears appear favorable to cathole techniques in terms of indicator bacteria reduction, the application of this method is limited by several other factors common to backcountry sanitation situations. It is therefore likely that surface disposal would only be applicable in very remote, low use, alpine and arid settings where lack of soil development precludes the use of catholes and carry-out techniques are otherwise impractical. 相似文献

One of the most pressing problems facing wilderness managers in the ecologically fragile Drakensberg Mountains, South Africa,
is that of path erosion, since it detracts from the wilderness experience and is very costly to remediate. As increasing demand
for wilderness and outdoor recreation places greater pressure on paths and trails, it will be necessary to increase path network
size and capacity, and it is important that new paths are routed such that maintenance requirements are minimal.
This study describes the development of a technique based on the site and environmental variables of rainfall, topographic
slope, and lithology, which enables assessment of path erosion risk before paths are planned and constructed. The technique
was tested on a path at the Drakensberg resort of Loteni, and showed good correlation with actual path degradation. When used
as a tool in path network planning, it can aid in the selection of low-maintenance routes and also help in planning maintenance
budgets. 相似文献

The paper provides a review of available information on the impact of recreation and tourism on environments, particularly on vegetation and soil, in Australia, with an emphasis on forests. Efforts have been made to compare the current research and development situation in Australia with some overseas countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom. While many documents reveal that Australia has been experiencing an increasingly high level of recreation and tourism use in its environments, only limited studies of environmental impacts of recreation and tourism have been published. Compared with other developed countries, particularly the United Kingdom and the United States, Australia lags behind in undertaking research in this area. The results of these limited studies and some observations indicate that the most common recreational and tourist activities (such as bush walking, camping, horse-riding) can, if not well managed, adversely affect the values of Australian natural and semi-natural resources. Overall, they can affect the vegetation and other recreational sites physically and biologically. Physical effects include track formation, soil loss and/or compaction and an increase in fire frequency. Littering and water pollution are also seen as impacts associated with bush walking and camping. Biological effects include causing damage to vegetation, increasing risk of myrtle wilt disease and the spread of the soil pathogen,Phytophthora cinnamomi, as well as assisting weed dispersal. Based on the information reviewed, the authors suggest the following areas as priorities for future research into the environmental impact of recreation and tourism in Australia: determine the type of natural features that attract recreation use; determine the quantitative relationship between the impact and the level of recreation and tourism use for different activities within major vegetation habitats; ascertain site carrying capacity or environment thresholds for major vegetation habitats and recreation activities; and determine the impacts of recreation and tourism for major regions and major vegetation habitats where there have been considerable nature-based recreation and tourism activities.1998 Academic Press 相似文献

A first alternative for estimating the physical carrying capacities of natural areas for recreation 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Utilizing an adaptation of the Universal Soil Loss Equation, this article discusses a method for approximating the physical carrying capacity of natural areas for outdoor recreation. Classification of forested woodland and field environments is based upon the conversion of ground cover coefficients to the percentage of ground cover required to maintain soil productivity over time. Four canopy types, three canopy densities, and two general types of ground cover are recognized in the equation as well as soil characteristics, topographical variations, and rainfall velocities and intensities. The method requires that the areal distribution of soils occurring within natural areas be mapped. Approximations will vary according to the intensity of the planning desired, and may range from a general classification of large land areas to highly site-specific evaluations. Data generated from over 40 years of cooperative research form the basis for classifying natural areas according to their relative physical capacities to accommodate outdoor recreation. 相似文献

/ Several studies have suggested that use of wildernesses within national forests is declining. Data from three wildernesses in Oregon (based on mandatory permits and voluntary registration) indicate that between 1976 and 1991 in two areas and between 1980 and 1993 in another area the number of recreational visitor days (RVDs) has declined between 23% and 63%. However, the number of visits has remained roughly stable in one area and more than doubled in the other two. The disparity between the two measures of use may be the result of shifts from mainly overnight to mainly day use in these wildernesses. Day use has increased from about 30% to over 60% of all visits. Trends are different enough in each wilderness to warrant independent analyses over time. Management implications of using different measures of use as well as observed trends are discussed.KEY WORDS: Wilderness management; Wilderness use; Trends 相似文献
