Meroplankton are seasonally important contributors to the zooplankton, particularly at inshore sites, yet their feeding ecology is poorly known relative to holoplankton. While several studies have measured feeding in decapod larvae, few studies have examined the feeding rates of decapod larvae on natural prey assemblages throughout the reproductive season. We conducted 8 feeding experiments with Necora puber, Liocarcinus spp. and Upogebia spp. zoea larvae collected from the L4 monitoring site off Plymouth (50°15.00′N, 4°13.02′W) during spring–summer 2009 and 2010. This period spanned moderate-to-high food availability (0.5–1.6 µg chl-a L?1), but a great range in food composition with small cells <20 µm dominating in 2010. Daily rations averaged 17, 60 and 22 % of body C for the 3 respective decapod species. Clearance rates differed according to prey type, and all 3 decapod genera showed evidence of selection of dinoflagellates. Importantly, small cells including nano- and pico-plankton were ingested, this being demonstrated independently by flow cytometric analysis of the feeding experiments and molecular analysis. PCR-based analysis of the haptophyte portion of the diet revealed ingestion of Isochrysis galbana by decapod larvae in the bottle incubations and Isochrysis galbana and Phaeocystis globosa by decapod larvae collected directly from the field. This study has shown that pico- and nano-sized plankton form an important supplement to the diverse and variable diet of decapod larvae.  相似文献

The thermal envelope of development to the larval stage of two echinoids from eastern Australia was characterized to determine whether they fill their potential latitudinal ranges as indicated by tolerance limits. The tropical sand dollar, Arachnoides placenta, a species that is not known to have shifted its range, was investigated in Townsville, northern Australia (19°20′S, 146°77′E), during its autumn spawning season (May 2012). The subtropical/temperate sea urchin, Centrostephanus rodgersii, a species that has undergone poleward range expansion, was investigated in Sydney, southern Australia (33°58′S, 151°14′E), during its winter spawning season (August 2012). The thermal tolerance of development was determined in embryos and larvae reared at twelve temperatures. For A. placenta, the ambient water temperature near Townsville and experimental control were 24 °C and treatments ranged from 14 to 37 °C. For C. rodgersii, ambient Sydney water temperature and experimental control were 17 °C, and the treatment range was 9–31 °C. A. placenta had a broader developmental thermal envelope (14 °C range 17–31 °C) than C. rodgersii (9 °C range 13–22 °C). Both species developed successfully at temperatures well below ambient, suggesting that cooler water is not a barrier to poleward migration for either species. Both species presently live near the upper thermal limits for larval development, and future ocean warming could lead to contractions of their northern range limits. This study provides insights into the factors influencing the realized and potential distribution of planktonic life stages and changes to adult distribution in response to global change.  相似文献

Observations on the effects of several environmental conditions in embryonic and larval cultures are reported for the gooseneck barnacle Pollicipes polymerus (Sowerby, 1833). When the growth rates of control embryos kept in finger bowls at ambient-temperature sea water (ca. 12°–15°C) were compared to those of embryos grown under variously modified circumstances, it was found that growth rates were faster under conditions closely simulating the adult barnacle mantle-cavity (e.g. darkness and aeration). Addition of antimicrobial drugs and reduction of egg-mass size also promoted fast growth and development. Nauplii were fed several species of algae; only three species promoted growth to Stage V or older. Naupliar growth was fastest in larvae fed the combination of Prorocentrum micans/Platymonas sp. Larvae fed Prococentrum micans/pennate diatom grew slowest, and most larvae died at Naupliar Stage III. Interactions between algal species may have affected their nutritional value for Pollicipes polymerus nauplii. Less larval activity, slower growth rates, and higher mortality rates were observed in individuals given small amounts of food. The development of embryos and larvae in culture depends greatly on the culture conditions. These conditions should be described if comparison of timetables and envents are to be made between studies.  相似文献

The importance life history plays in understanding population dynamics and the functional roles of species for predicting climate change scenarios are well established. Yet, in the marine environment, the complete life history is unknown for many species, especially the link between morphologically and ecologically distinct planktonic larvae, and their corresponding benthic adult forms. Integration of meroplankton abundance, benthic adult species, larval morphology, and molecular data was employed to unravel the complete life history of Polygordius, a dominant polychaete in sandy shelf sediments of the Mid-Atlantic Bight. Polygordius species are unusual, having two distinct planktonic larval forms: an exolarva and an endolarva. Extensive sampling in the southern Mid-Atlantic Bight with careful preservation of meroplankton (2006–2007) revealed the identity of multiple stages of exo- and endolarvae, and their spatial, seasonal, and vertical distribution. Molecular and morphological evidence indicated exolarvae are Polygordius jouinae and endolarva are an undescribed species. Structure and development of these larvae differed greatly. P. jouinae exolarvae were found off Delaware Bay to North Carolina. At some stations, they were abundant, with densities up to 4,013 m?3, comprising >90 % of the total meroplankton. Exolarvae spent up to a month in the plankton starting in March/May depending on year, settlement began in July when larvae were at least 2 mm in length, and by October were no longer observed in the plankton. These findings are consistent with the distribution patterns and life cycle known for adults. This is the first report of endolarvae north of Cape Hatteras.  相似文献

Larvae of Bankia gouldi (Bartsch) and Teredo navalis L. were reared in the laboratory at various temperatures and salinities. T. navalis spawned at lower temperatures than B. gouldi. T. navalis larvae were released at temperatures from 13° to 30°C; in B. gouldi, spawning occurred from 17.5° to 30°C. Both species released offspring at salinities of 20 and 30‰. Larvae of the two species can be distinguished morphometrically at the earliest pelagic veliger stage and in the pediveliger stage. Average dimensions of newly released T. navalis larvae are 88 x 75 μ (length x height), while the youngest B. gouldi veligers measure 61 x 50 μ. Pediveligers of T. navalis (205 x 239 μ) are smaller than those of B. gouldi (221 x 260 μ). At other stages of larval development the two species appear so similar that they cannot yet readily be distinguished. Under laboratory conditions of 25°C and 30 ‰, the free-swimming life of B. gouldi to the pediveliger stage was about 10 days longer than that of T. navalis (25 and 15 days, respectively). Incubated larval development of T. navalis was estimated to be 5 days at 25°C. Potential competition between larval stages of the two species, and modification of settling behavior by dissolved humic material (Gelbstoff), is discussed.  相似文献

Females of the polychaete Polydora hoplura (Claparède 1869) that produced planktotrophic and adelphophagic larvae were compared genetically to determine whether the different reproductive morphs represented sibling species or poecilogony. Worms were collected from Saldanha Bay, South Africa (33°0′37.71S, 17°56′59.74E), and cultured in a laboratory setting from November 2012 to April 2013. The results based on mitochondrial and nuclear DNA (Cyt b and ATPSα, respectively) showed shared haplotypes between reproductive morphs for both markers. Additionally, variation in mtDNA sequences was significantly higher within morphs than between morphs (95.8 and 4.2 %, respectively). A comparison of developmental modes found that broods of planktotrophic larvae were larger than broods of adelphophagic larvae, while the latter had larger eggs and larvae at hatching. Developmental time from oviposition to settlement for planktotrophic and adelphophagic larvae was 40.2 and 16.6 days, respectively. Polydora hoplura represents the fifth confirmed case of poecilogony in the Spionidae.  相似文献

Trachurus capensis is an important fisheries resource in the degraded Namibian upwelling ecosystem. Food supply and shoaling of hypoxic zones are hypothesised to influence the species’ recruitment success. This paper is the first to quantify energy requirements and hypoxia tolerance of larval and juvenile stages of a Trachurus species. We measured normoxic respiration rates of T. capensis with a size range from 0.001 to 20.8 g wet mass (WM) collected off Cape Town (33.9°S, 18.5°E, 12/2009) and in the northern Benguela (17–24°S, 11–15°E, 02/2011). Routine metabolic rate (RMR) and standard routine rate (SRR) (mg O2 h?1) followed the allometric functions RMR = 0.418 WM0.774 and SRR = 0.275 WM0.855, respectively. Larvae and juveniles had comparatively high metabolic rates, and the energy demand of juveniles at the upper end of the size range appeared too high to be fuelled by a copepod diet alone. T. capensis’ early life stages showed a high tolerance to hypoxic conditions. RMR in larvae did not change until 30 % O2sat at 18 °C. In juveniles, critical oxygen saturation levels were low (PC for SRR = 11.2 ± 1.7 % O2sat and PC for RMR = 13.2 ± 1.6 % O2sat at 20 °C) and oxy-regulation effective (regulation index = 0.78 ± 0.09). A high hypoxia tolerance may facilitate the retention of larvae in near-shore waters providing favourable feeding conditions and allowing juveniles to exploit food resources in the oxygen minimum zone. These mechanisms seem to well adapt T. capensis to a habitat affected by spreading hypoxic zones and probably enhance its recruitment success.  相似文献

Dispersal is essential in order that endemic species living in ephemeral, patchy vent environments may persist over evolutionary time. Quantitative field studies of larval dispersal, however, require specieslevel identification of the larval forms because each individual must be distinguished from related vent species, and from non-vent species living in the surrounding deep-sea environment. Methods for culturing these larvae to an identifiable stage have not yet been developed. To solve the larval identification problem for the archaeogastropod molluscs (a prominent component of vent communities), we used a scanning electron microscope (SEM) to image shells of larvae collected in the water column near vents along the East Pacific Rise (9°40′ to 9°50′N; 104°W). Larval shell size, shape and ornamentation were compared to protoconchs retained in juvenile or adult shells of identified species, and used to assign five larval groups unequivocally to species (Cyathermia naticoides Warén and Bouchet, 1989; Neomphalus fretterae McLean, 1981; Clypeosectus delectus McLean, 1989; Rhynchopelta concentrica McLean, 1989; and Lirapex granularis Warén and Bouchet, 1989) and seven groups tentatively to species or genus [Lepetodrilus spp. (three groups); Gorgoleptis sp; Peltospira ?operculata McLean, 1989; and ?Melanodrymia sp. (two groups)].  相似文献

The estuarine polychaete, Hediste diadroma (Nereididae), of eastern Asia was found at all six sites sampled in October 2009 in northeast Pacific estuaries, including the Columbia River, along a 300-km stretch of coastline in Washington and Oregon, USA. The immature worms were returned to the laboratory in Japan where 13 of them were cultured to sexual maturity after 5–7 months. These worms had the diagnostic, epitoke-specific spinigers that distinguish H. diadroma from all other Hediste species. Their egg sizes (140–170 μm), paragnath numbers on the proboscis, and chromosome number (2n = 28) were also consistent with those previously reported for the Japanese population of H. diadroma. The widespread distribution of H. diadroma indicates that it is a successful invader of the North American Pacific and it may have long escaped detection because of its morphological similarity to the native species, H. limnicola. The long pelagic life of H. diadroma larvae could have facilitated its successful trans-ocean dispersal with ballast water of ships.  相似文献

This study details a simple and cost-effective means of attaching acoustic transmitters to coral reef sharks and stingrays, which potentially allows for retrieval and reuse on completion of tracks. Between 2008 and 2011, galvanised timed releases were trialled in both static field tests and on blacktip reef sharks Carcharhinus melanopterus, cowtail Pastinachus atrus, and porcupine Urogymnus asperrimus rays in Coral Bay (?23°08′41″, 113°45′53″), Western Australia. The timed releases remained attached to animals for the duration required for tracking and in four out of five deployments transmitters were recovered after release from the animals. The use of modified Rototags for sharks and stainless steel darts for stingrays allowed rapid and effective attachment to animals, with limited impact on their welfare in the short term. External attachment for short-term tracking of coral reef-associated elasmobranchs should be considered as a complementary option to internal placement of transmitters in animals either by surgery or by ingestion.  相似文献

Information on physiological rates and tolerances helps one gain a cause-and-effect understanding of the role that some environmental (bottom–up) factors play in regulating the seasonality and productivity of key species. We combined the results of laboratory experiments on reproductive success and field time series data on adult abundance to explore factors controlling the seasonality of Acartia spp., Eurytemora affinis and Temora longicornis, key copepods of brackish, coastal and temperate environments. Patterns in laboratory and field data were discussed using a metabolic framework that included the effects of ‘controlling’, ‘masking’ and ‘directive’ environmental factors. Over a 5-year period, changes in adult abundance within two south-west Baltic field sites (Kiel Fjord Pier, 54°19′89N, 10°09′06E, 12–21 psu, and North/Baltic Sea Canal NOK, 54°20′45N, 9°57′02E, 4–10 psu) were evaluated with respect to changes in temperature, salinity, day length and chlorophyll a concentration. Acartia spp. dominated the copepod assemblage at both sites (up to 16,764 and 21,771 females m?3 at NOK and Pier) and was 4 to 10 times more abundant than E. affinis (to 2,939?m?3 at NOK) and T. longicornis (to 1,959?m?3 at Pier), respectively. Species-specific salinity tolerance explains differences in adult abundance between sampling sites whereas phenological differences among species are best explained by the influence of species-specific thermal windows and prey requirements supporting survival and egg production. Multiple intrinsic and extrinsic (environmental) factors influence the production of different egg types (normal and resting), regulate life-history strategies and influence match–mismatch dynamics.  相似文献

The natural depuration or bioelimination of l37Cs was investigated in Mytilus galloprovincialis under contaminated field and laboratory conditions. The depuration result represented by a single component and biological half‐life was found to be 63 days under Chernobyl condition during 1986–1987. On the other hand, the biological half‐life of 137Cs were found in the range 19.7–27.1 days in the laboratory experiment. The bioelimination process was also found biphasic and dependent of temperature at 5°C and 13°C under laboratory conditions. The results obtained in the contaminated field and the laboratory are not comparable in the mussels.  相似文献

In southern Taiwan, brooded larvae of Pocillopora damicornis and Seriatopora caliendrum are released year-round in synchrony with new moons, and each larval release occurs over multiple days. Using P. damicornis and S. caliendrum as a model system, we describe within-brood variation in larval phenotypes and test for release-day effects that influence larval performance in the pelagic phase. Research was conducted in 2010 using larvae from corals collected in June and July from Nanwan Bay (21°56.179??N, 120°44.85??E). In June, larval phenotypes of both species were characterized immediately following release, and their competency to settle assessed. In July, larvae of P. damicornis were collected on 3?days over the peak release period and incubated for 7?C11?days at 28.0?°C and 320???mol?quanta?m?2?s?1; their phenotypes and settlement competency were measured every 2?days. P. damicornis larvae released close to peak release were 1.6 times larger in size, contained twice the number of Symbiodinium larva?1, and were 44?% more likely to settle in the first 24?h than larvae released early in the brood. In addition, peak-release larvae respired at a lower rate than larvae released late in the brood. Similarly, S. caliendrum larvae released close to peak release were 1.4 times larger in size and were 33?% more likely to settle in the first 5?h than larvae released early in the brood. In July, P. damicornis larvae differed between early (2?days prior to peak), peak, and late (2?days after peak) release. Protein content of early-release larvae was lower than peak- and late-release larvae, and this difference persisted throughout the development. Further, release day affected the way larval respiration varied throughout development. By showing that brooded coral larvae differ between release days and display maternal effects influencing performance in the swimming phase, our results suggest that pocilloporid corals utilize bet-hedging to increase reproductive success.  相似文献

The plasma nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA) of five species of temperate zone marine teleost fishes (Northwestern Atlantic), one Arctic marine teleost (Eastern Canadian Arctic), and four species of marine elasmobranchs (Northwestern Atlantic) are reported. Four fatty acids, 16:0, 18:1n9, 20:5n3 and 22:6n3, comprised 70 to 83% of total NEFA in the plasma of all temperate teleost species examined. With the sole exception of 18:1, these differed from the predominant fatty acids, 14:1, 16:1, 18:1 and 20:5n3, in the Arctic species. The predominant fatty acids in elasmobranch NEFA were 16:0, 22:6n3 and 18:1n9 in all species but saturated fatty acids (14:0, 16:0 and 18:0) accounted for 40% of all NEFA in all elasmobranchs examined. Monoenes represented a greater, and polyenes a smaller, percentage of the fatty acids in the Arctic sculpin compared to the temperate sculpin. Fatty acids of the n3 series were lower in the plasma of the Arctic sculpin compared to the temperate sculpin. Comparisons with published values for freshwater fish using the same method indicate the n3:n6 ratio is higher in the marine teleost fishes. Ratios of n3:n6 fatty acids ranged from 1.80 to 7.94 for the elasmobranchs and were on average lower than those for the marine teleosts. Total levels of NEFA for the elasmobranchs were between 193 and 399 nmol ml-1, lower than the values reported here for teleosts but within the range reported by others for some teleost fishes.  相似文献

To evaluate the effects of temperature and pCO2 on coral larvae, brooded larvae of Pocillopora damicornis from Nanwan Bay, Taiwan (21°56.179′N, 120°44.85′E), were exposed to ambient (419–470 μatm) and high (604–742 μatm) pCO2 at ~25 and ~29 °C in two experiments conducted in March 2010 and March 2012. Larvae were sampled from four consecutive lunar days (LD) synchronized with spawning following the new moon, incubated in treatments for 24 h, and measured for respiration, maximum photochemical efficiency of PSII (F v/F m), and mortality. The most striking outcome was a strong effect of time (i.e., LD) on larvae performance: respiration was affected by an LD × temperature interaction in 2010 and 2012, as well as an LD × pCO2 × temperature interaction in 2012; F v/F m was affected by LD in 2010 (but not 2012); and mortality was affected by an LD × pCO2 interaction in 2010, and an LD × temperature interaction in 2012. There were no main effects of pCO2 in 2010, but in 2012, high pCO2 depressed metabolic rate and reduced mortality. Therefore, differences in larval performance depended on day of release and resulted in varying susceptibility to future predicted environmental conditions. These results underscore the importance of considering larval brood variation across days when designing experiments. Subtle differences in experimental outcomes between years suggest that transgenerational plasticity in combination with unique histories of exposure to physical conditions can modulate the response of brooded coral larvae to climate change and ocean acidification.  相似文献

Biochemical indices of aerobic and anaerobic metabolic capacity were measured in white myotomal muscle of eight marine elasmobranch fish species representing a broad range of locomotor performance, and in red myotomal muscle and heart of three of those species. The objectives were to determine if metabolic capacities vary with typical fish activity level, to compare the endothermic mako shark with ectothermic pelagic sharks, and to compare elasmobranchs with teleosts in order to test the hypothesis that elasmobranchs have lower aerobic capacities, metabolic rates, and swimming speeds. In white myotomal muscle, activities of the enzymes citrate synthase (an index of aerobic capacity), pyruvate kinase, and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH, an index of anaerobic capacity) covaried with typical activity level, and the ability to tolerate intracellular acidification (nonbicarbonate buffering capacity) corresponded with LDH activity. Enzyme activities in red muscle and heart did not show a consistent pattern with respect to fish activity. In comparison with ectothermic sharks, the mako shark had greater aerobic and anaerobic capacities in white muscle, but no significant differences were found in red muscle or heart. This pattern has also been found in teleosts. Thus, endothermic fishes elevate the temperature of red muscle, a tissue specialized for high aerobic performance, whereas white muscle biochemical characteristics are adjusted to support high rates of contraction both aerobically and anaerobically. Muscle enzymic activities of elasmobranchs and teleosts with comparable locomotor habits are similar, thus refuting the hypothesis that elasmobranchs are sluggish, with lower metabolic capacities than teleosts.  相似文献

Galerucella placida Baly (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) is a potential biocontrol agent of the rice-field weed Polygonum orientale L. (Polygonaceae). The volatile organic compound (VOC) profiles from undamaged and mechanically damaged plants, and from plants 12- and 36-h following continuous feeding of female G. placida adults and 2nd instar larvae were identified and quantified by GC–MS and GC-FID analyses. Twenty-four and 21 compounds were identified in volatiles of undamaged and insect feeding plants, respectively; whereas 22 compounds were detected in volatiles of mechanically damaged plants. Decanal and 1-dodecanol were unique to undamaged plants, and linalool was detected in volatiles of undamaged and mechanically damaged plants, but not in volatiles of insect damaged plants. However, the beetles are not attracted by none of these volatile components, when tested individually in Y-shaped glass tube olfactometer bioassays. In all plants, methyl jasmonate was predominant. 1-Undecanol was the least amount in undamaged plants, and plants 12-h after feeding by G. placida adults and larvae; whereas 1-tridecanol was the least abundant in plants 36-h after feeding by G. placida adults and larvae, and mechanically damaged plants. The beetles showed significant preference to the whole volatile blends from plants 12-h after feeding by larvae and plants 36-h after feeding by either larvae or adults compared to those of undamaged plants. Further, G. placida responded to individual synthetic compounds, 3-hexanol, 1-octen-3-ol, nonanal, and geraniol at 7, 1.38, 3.75 and 4.5 µg/25 µL CH2Cl2, respectively, and provide a basis for attraction of the potential biocontrol agent in the field.  相似文献

The trophic ecology of the lanternfish Lampanyctus pusillus was investigated using individuals captured off the Balearic Islands (39°N, 2°E) (western Mediterranean) in December 2009. Based on gut content analyses, the trophic niche breadth, diet composition and selectivity were determined for the entire life cycle of L. pusillus. The larval stages fed actively near the surface during the day, with a feeding incidence (FI) of approximately 71 %. In contrast, the adults fed at night, both in near-surface depths and in the 400 m deep scattering layer, with a higher FI (83 %). Diet analysis revealed a shift in the prey choice throughout ontogenetic development, from preflexion individuals, which selected nauplii and small oncaeids, to postflexion larvae, which consumed a variety of calanoids, mainly Clausocalanus spp., to the adults, which preyed on large organisms, exhibiting positive selectivity for Pleuromamma spp. and euphausiids. These results show that the vertical distribution of larvae and adults is partly conditioned by their respective feeding habits, with larvae feeding on small zooplankton in the upper layer and adults preferring to consume larger taxa that perform nycthemeral migrations.  相似文献

In larvae of the bay anchovy Anchoa mitchilli (Valenciennes), the sea bream Archosargus rhomboidalis (Linnaeus), and the lined sole Achirus lineatus (Linnaeus), growth, survival, and starvation times were investigated at temperatures of 22° to 32°C. The rate at which hours after hatching until starvation decreased in relation to temperature for unfed larvae did not differ significantly among the 3 species, ranging from-5.4 to-6.3 h per degree increase in temperature. The total number of hours until starvation did differ for all 3 species: lined soles survived longest, bay anchovies were intermediate, and sea bream survived the least time. At 28°C, unfed sea bream could survive 90.1 h, bay anchovy 102.3 h, and lined sole 119.8 h. The eyes pigmented at nearly the same time after hatching for sea bream and bay anchovy, but took about 20 h longer at all temperatures for lined sole. Quadratic equations best described the relationship between hours after hatching when the eyes became pigmented and temperature. Eye-pigmentation times became nearly constant for all 3 species at temperatures above 28°C. At 28°C, eyes pigmented about 27 h after hatching for bay anchovy and sea bream but not until 47 h for lined sole. Hours after eye pigmentation when unfed larvae starved was a measure of the effective time that larvae had to commence feeding. Bay anchovies and lined soles were nearly alike in this respect, but sea bream starved at tewer hours after eye pigmentation. Slopes of regressions representing decrease in times to staration for increasing temperatures ranged from-3.7 to-4.4 h per degree increase in temperature, and were not significantly different among the 3 species. At 28°C, unfed lined soles starved at 70 a after eye pigmentation, bay anchovies starved at 72.5 h, and sea bream at only 62 h. Yolk absorption was most rapid for all species during the first 20 h after hatching, and was faster at higher temperatures. Amounts of yolk remaining at the time eyes became pigmented were less at higher temperatures for bay anchovy and lined sole, but were greater for sea bream, suggesting that sea bream used yolk more efficiently at higher temperatures. Either no yolk or small traces (>0.20%) remained at 24 h after eye pigmentation in all 3 species. Feeding was delayed for periods of 8, 16, 24, 32, 40 and 48 h after eye pigmentation for all species at a series of experimental temperatures from 24° to 32°C. Growth and survival were affected when food was withheld for more than 24 h at 28°C, but survival did not decrease markedly until food was withheld at least 8 h longer. At lower temperatures food could be withheld longer and at higher temperatures for less time. Feeding can be initiated by most larvae for several hours after all visible yolk reserves have been exhausted. All species tested can survive for 24 to 40 h after eye pigmentation at 24° to 28°C without food and still have relatively good growth and survival when food is offered. If the “critical period” is considered relative to time of hatching, lined soles need not find food for 3 to 3.5 days after hatching, but bay anchovy and sea bream must feed within 2.5 days of hatching.  相似文献

To test whether coral planulae recruit randomly to different coral reef habitats or have specific substratum preferences, the settling behavior of planulae from two shallow water coral species from Pago Bay, Guam (13°25.02N, 144°47.30E) were examined in the laboratory in June and July of 1995. Goniastrea retiformis is generally restricted to the shallow reef front (<10 m depth) in areas dominated by crustose coralline algae (CCA), while Stylaraea punctata is abundant on inner reef flats were CCA coverage is low and sand and carbonate rubble covered by biofilms is common. When presented with four substrata (1) carbonate rock scrubbed free of biofilm and dried as a control, (2) the CCA Hydrolithon reinboldii, (3) the CCA Peyssonelia sp., and (4) naturally conditioned carbonate rubble covered by a biofilm, G. retiformis larvae showed a significant preference for H. reinboldii, and S. punctata larvae for the carbonate biofilm treatment. The preference shown by S. punctata larvae for biofilmed surfaces did not diminish with increasing larval age up to 11 days. These results suggest that the larvae of both species are capable of habitat selection, and that the preferred substrata among those tested bears a relationship to the habitats in which adult colonies were found.
