The aim of this, the third part of our study, was to compare the quantities of food consumed and assimilated by Venus verrucosa L. fed on two different living suspensions: the bacterium Lactobacillus sp. and the alga Pavlova lutheri. The experimental results have been presented in parts I and II of our study. The present paper describes a model constructed for each series of experiments with bacteria and with phytoplankton. An analog-computer model was succesfully applied and revealed that bacterial food was more easily consumed and assimilated than algal food, the dissolved form more easily assimilated than the living particulate form.  相似文献

The release of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from phytolankton during photosynthesis, and the utilization of this carbon by planktonic bacteria, was studied using 14CO2 and selective filtration. Natural sea water samples from a coastal area of the Northern Baltic Sea were incubated in the laboratory for detailed studies, and in situ for estimation of annual dynamics. In a laboratory incubation (at +1°C) the concentration of 14C-labelled dissolved organic carbon increased for about 2 h and then reached a steady state, representing about 0. 1% of the total DOC. Labelled organic carbon in the phytoplankton and bacterial fractions continued to increase almost linearly. The continuous increase in the bacterial fraction is thought to represent almost instantaneous utilization of the DOC released from the phytoplankton during photosynthesis. As an annual average, in 4 h in situ incubations, about 65% of the labelled organic carbon was found in the phytoplankton fraction (>3 m), about 27% in the bacterial fraction (0.2 to 3 m) and the remaining 8% as DOC (<0.2 m). Large variations in these percentages were recorded. The measured annual primary production was 93 g C m-2 (March to December), and the estimated bacterial production due to phytoplankton exudates 29 g C m-2. This represents a release of DOC of about 45% of the corrected annual primary production of 110 g C m-2 (assuming a bacterial growth efficiency of 0.6).  相似文献

Following a previous study, this paper deals with the utilisation of a phytoplankton suspension (Pavlova lutheri) by the clam Venus verrucosa Linné, 1767 as a function of time. Experimental clams filtered and ingested 100% of the suspension after 2 h. The radioactivity recovered in the whole soft body of the clams was 83.8% after 2 h, 66.0% after 10 h and 46.0% after 41 h. The faeces contained 13.7% after 3 h and 34.3% after 41 h. Carbon-dioxide radioactivity (gas plus dissolved) increased slowly to 12.4% after 41 h. When the water was not changed after 17 h, the clams reabsorbed a great part of their dissolved products and faeces. Under these latter conditions the radioactivity recovered from the whole soft body of the clams was roughly the same as that recovered after the start of the experiment. The aim of this study was the comparison of the consumption of two kinds of food: bacteria and phytoplankton. The work was carried out over three years, from 1977 to 1980.  相似文献

The accumulation of cadmium and copper by Cricosphaera elongata is determined in the absence and presence of natural phytoplankton exudates. The concentrations of metals accumulated increase with increasing concentrations of metals in the medium. Primary productivity and respiration of the overall plankton community and of ultraplankton (organisms passing through a 3-m Nuclepore filter) were studied at the entrance to the Gulf of Finland during the growth season in 1982. Data of the respiration measurements from previous years are also presented. During the development of a diatom spring bloom, the algal component could be successfully separated from the bacterial component by size fractionation with a 3-m Nuclepore filter and thus the algal respiration could be approximated, being on the order of 10 to 20% of the gross production. After the phytoplankton spring maximum, bacteria played an important role in mediating the energy flow from phytoplankton exudates to higher trophic levels. Maximum values of 1 230 and 740 mg O2 m-2 d-1 were recorded for overall and for ultraplankton respiration, respectively, during late July. High productivity values coupled with low phytoplankton biomass and low inorganic nutrient values were also recorded in late July, indicating effective nutrient regeneration and rapid turnover of the plankton community. During late summer, a considerable fraction (over 30%) of phytoplankton production was released as exudates, suggesting that much of the energy is channeled to higher trophic levels via bacterial pathways rather than by direct herbivorous grazing during this season. The summer development of phytoplankton community structure and functioning is strongly controlled by hydrographic conditions, i.e. by nutrient inputs via upwelling and by water temperature. A carbon budget for late summer indicated that bacteria may contribute only up to 50% of the overall respiration of the plankton community, which suggests that heterotrophs other than bacteria play an important role in nutrient regeneration. The present study stresses the importance of energy flow via the phytoplankton exudatebacteria-micrograzer pathway in relatively oligotrophic, brackish water ecosystems.  相似文献

The distribution of phytoplankton primary production into four size fractions (>10 m, 10-3 m, 3-0.2 m and <0.2 m), the utilization of algal exudates by bacteria and the bacterial production were studied in a eutrophication gradient in the northern Baltic proper. The polluted area exhibits substantially increased nutrient, especially nitrogen, levels while only minor differences occur in salinity and temperature regimes. Total primary production was 160 g C · m-2 · yr-1 at the control station and about 275 g C · m-2 · yr-1 at the eutrophicated stations. The estimated total exudate release was 16% of the totally fixed 14CO2 in the control area and 12% in the eutrophicated area (including the estimated bacterial uptake of exudates). The difference in14CO2 uptake rates between incubation of previously filtered water (<3, <2, <1 m) and unfiltered water was used to estimate bacterial uptake of phytoplankton exudates which were found to contribute about half of the estimated bacterial carbon requirement in both areas. Bacterial production was estimated by the frequency of dividing cells (FDC) method as being 38 g C · m-2 · yr-1 at the control station and 50 g C · m-2 · yr-1 at the eutrophicated stations. To estimate the mean in situ bacterial cell volume a correlation between FDC and cell volume was used. The increased annual primary production in the eutrophicated area was due mainly to higher production during spring and autumn, largely by phytoplankton cells (mainly diatoms) retained by a 10 m filter. Primary production duringsummer was similarin the two areas, as was the distribution on different size fractions. This could possibly explain the similar bacterial production in the trophic layers at all stations since the bulk of bacterial production occurs during summer. It was demonstrated that selective filtration does not quantitatively separate photoautotrophs and bacteria. A substantial fraction of the primary production occurs in the size fraction <3 m. The primary production encountered in the 3-0.2 m fraction was due to abundant picoplankton (0.5 to 8 · 107 ind · l-1), easily passing a 3 m filter. The picoplankton was estimated to constitute up to 25% of the total phytoplankton biomass in the control area and up to 10% in the eutrophicated area.  相似文献

The natural heterotrophic utilization of released and particulate photoassimilated compounds by natural phytoplankton populations was followed during the summer of 1975 in the Kiel Bight (Western Baltic Sea). Phytoplankton exudates (2 to 21% of primary production) seem to represent an important substrate for heterotrophic bacteria: uptake rates between 8 and 17,5%/h were observed. Samples incubated with antibiotics indicated that the heterotrophic uptake of phytoplankton exudates during photosynthesis could lead to underestimation of the release rate. Production of 14CO 2was used as an estimate of the mineralization of particulate photoassimilated matter. The mineralization rates measured were in the range of 6 to 20% after 20 h. In order to confirm the quantitative measurements, micro-autoradiographic examinations of the samples were performed.  相似文献

The in situ grazing rate and nutritional condition of copepods were studied during October/November 1985, by analyzing gut fluorescence (feeding), body size and lipid composition (nutritional state), and electron transport system (ETS) activity (respiration rate) of copepods from surface-and deep-water in Kosterfjorden on the Swedish west coast. These parameters were related to the physical and biological environment, as defined by light, hydrography, autotrophic and bacterial production and seston in the water column. The results show a gradual build-up of the autumn phytoplankton bloom in the uppermost meters, with a peak in total autotrophic production in mid October of ca 550 mg C m–2 d–1, and a bacterial net production corresponding to 15% of this. Phytoplankton exudates made up, on average, 47% of the primary production and more than 50% of this was utilized by the bacteria. Copepods occurring in the surface-water exhibited grazing rates corresponding to between 11 and 18% of their body C d–1 and potential growth rates of 0 to 9% d–1. Copepod populations in the surface water were composed of individuals with higher average body-weight and lower lipid-proportion than those from the deep-water.Calanus finmarchicus in the deep-water showed characters indicating diapause condition, while this was not observed forAcartia clausi. Differences in lipid content and composition indicate thatC. finmarchicus, Pseudocalanus sp. andA. clausi represent three successive points on a scale of tolerance for fluctuations in the food environment. Pocillopora damicornis (Linnaeus) and Montipora verrucosa (Lamarck) were collected from Hawaiian reefs. In two experiments (September 1979-January 1980: ca. 4 mo; August-October 1980; ca. 2 mo), these reef corals were grown under sunlight passed through filters producing light fields of similar quantum flux but different spectral composition. In vitro cultures of symbiotic zooxanthellae (Symbiodinium microadriaticum Freudenthal) from M. verrucosa were cultured under similar conditions for 15 d. Blue or white light promoted more coral skeletal growth than green or red light. In both coral species, blue light increased the total amount of chlorophyll a of the coral-zooxanthellae association. In the perforate species, M. verrucosa, the pigment concentration was elevated by an increase in the density of zooxanthellae, but the pigment concentrations per algal cell remained unchanged; in the non-perforate species, P. damicornis, it appears that pigment concentration was elevated by an increase in pigment per algal cell, and not by an increase in density of zooxanthellae. The sunloving reef-flat coral P. damicornis did not grow as rapidly as the shade-species M. verrucosa at the low quantum flux (about 10% sunlight) provided by the experimental treatments. The in vitro cultures of zooxanthellae from M. verrucosa exhibited growth rates in light of altered spectral quality that correlated with the responses of the host coral species: blue and white light supported significantly greater growth than green light, and red light resulted in the lowest growth rate.Contribution No. 678 of the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology  相似文献

Trace-metal concentrations (Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn) were investigated in two species of abundant filter-feeding molluscs from Mauritania, the wedge shell Donax trunculus L. and the clam Venus verrucosa L. D. trunculus were collected on the beach of Nouakchott at low tide and V. verrucosa were sampled at the Banc d'Arguin at depths varying from 10 to 20 m, in mid-February 1987. D. trunculus contains significantly higher Fe and Zn concentrations than the clam. Total trace-metal content per individual (Y) in D. trunculus could be related to body weight (W) as the power function Y=aW b . The subsequent regression coefficient b was >1 for Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn and >1 for Cd. Metal concentrations in both species decreased in the order: Fe>Zn>Mn>Cu>Cd. Comparison of trace-metal concentrations in the small D. trunculus and the large V. verrucosa revealed lower contents in V. verrucosa, except for Cd. The trace-metal distribution in the various organs of V. verrucosa indicates that gills seem to concentrate metals, except Cu, to a greater degree than the other organs (visceral mass and remainder). The relatively elevated content of Fe in D. trunculus and of Cd, Fe and Zn in the gills of V. verrucosa seem to be of natural origin. In view of the scarcity of Mytilus sp. along the Mauritania coast, the molluscs D. trunculus and V. verrucosa are proposed as useful bioindicators of trace-metal concentrations.  相似文献

We investigated the filtration and utilization of the enteric bacteria Escherichia coli by two suspensionfeeding bivalves, Venus verrucosa (Linné), collected, during April 1990, in Port-Vendres harbour (France), and Mytilus galloprovincialis (Lamarck) collected from rearing units in the bay of Banyuls-sur-mer during June 1990. Because of a significant decrease in the concentration of culturable E. coli in filtered seawater, we used 14C glutamic acid to label the bacteria. Labelling efficiency was low (20%) compared to the 30% reported for the marine bacteria Lactobacillus sp. by Amouroux (1982). However, the labelling by this radioisotope was very stable, enabling its use to monitor filtration. Concentrations of culturable E. coli decreased more rapidly in the presence of M. galloprovincialis than in the presence of V. verrucosa. In both bivalve species, changes of radioactivity within the bivalve, particulate organic matter (POM), dissolved organic matter (DOM) and CO2 compartments were similar and resulted from the interaction of several processes: filtration, biodeposition, and recycling. This interaction complicates the determination of the actual ingestion and assimilation rates, and necessitates the use of mathematical modelling.  相似文献

Aeolid nudibranchs maintain functional nematocysts, which are sequestered from the nudibranchs’ cnidarian prey and provide protection against predators. Some species exhibit extensive variation in incorporated nematocysts, while others maintain a limited number of types. This study examines the apparent diversity in uptake and patterns of nematocyst incorporation among related species. Nematocyst complements were described for four Gulf of Maine nudibranch species in the genus Flabellina exhibiting a variety of feeding strategies and prey specificities. Diet manipulations were performed to examine the response to changing nematocyst availability using a generalist consumer, Flabellina verrucosa, to assess nematocyst uptake based on diet. The flabellinid species examined exhibited significant differences in nematocyst incorporation, reflecting differences in their specificity as predators and nematocyst types available in their natural prey. The nematocyst complement of F. verrucosa was the most variable and differed among collection regions. When diet was manipulated, nematocyst uptake depended on the prey the nudibranchs consumed, but when offered a variety of prey, F. verrucosa selectively preferred nematocysts from scyphistomae. The observed variation in nematocyst uptake among species and regions probably relates to environmental disparities among populations.  相似文献

A specimen of the stonefish Synanceja verrucosa was captured in Okinawa in March 1988. Live specimens of the scorpionfish Inimicus japonicus were purchased from the Tokyo Central Wholesale Market in November 1988 and those of four species of zebrafish Pterois lumulata, P. volitans, P. antennata and Dendrochirus zebra from an aquarium in December 1988. Crude venoms were extracted from dorsal spines of the six species. All venoms exhibited lethal activity against mice and hemolytic activity specific for rabbit erythrocytes. The lethal activity (or hemolytic activity) of each venom was very unstable to freezing, lyophilization and heating. Both lethal and hemolytic activities of S. verrucosa venom were remarkably neutralized by the commerical stonefish (Synanceja trachynis) antivenom. This antivenom was also effective, to some extent, in counteracting the other venom activities. The neutralizing capacities of the antivenom were calculated to be 7310 LD50 ml-1 for S. verrucosa venom and 1 220 to 2 990 LD50 ml-1 for the other venoms. Results of neutralization tests suggest that venoms from the six species were comparable in terms of antigenecity.  相似文献

The mode of reproduction in Pocillopora verrucosa Ellis and Solander, 1786 varies between geographically isolated regions. This scleractinian coral is common along the KwaZulu-Natal coast, and its reproductive mode and period of reproduction were assessed using histological preparations. The study was undertaken from 1992 to 1994 and showed that P. verrucosa is a simultaneous hermaphrodite and broadcast spawner in KwaZulu-Natal. Gametogenesis occurs from October to January, with the gametes maturing simultaneously so that spawning can be synchronised at new moon in January (mid-summer). The amount of mucus released by the Mediterranean coral Cladocora cespitosa (L.) was determined in laboratory experiments and the incorporation of mucus into bacterial biomass was investigated by means of incubation experiments in 1984. Mean mucus release was 8.5 g (mucus dry wt) pclyp-1 h-1 and amounted to 44% of the respiratory carbon losses of the coral since mean organic carbon content of freshly collected mucus was 102.2g C mg (mucus dry wt)-1. Due to the abundance of C. cespitosa in the shallow littoral of the Bight of Piran, the energy content of mucus released is estimated to correspond to about 20% of the phytoplankton primary production in this area. Furthermore, the carbon conversion efficiency of 20% obtained from the bacterial population during decomposition of mucus indicates the high nutritional value of C. cespitosa mucus, although bacterial carbon onto mucus particles contributes less than 0.1% to the total organic carbon pool of the mucus.  相似文献

The utilisation of a viable bacterial suspension (Lactobacillus sp.) by the clamVenus verrucosa Linné, 1767 has been investigated as a function of time. The clams filtered and ingested 95% of the suspension within 2 h. Radioactivity recovered from the soft-body of the clams measured 51% of the total radioactivity introduced at the start of the experiment after 2.5 h, 48.8% after 10 h, and 39.9% after 40 h. The dissolved organic matter remained nearly constant, with 27.5% after 2.5 h, 24.4% after 10 h, and 29.8% after 40 h. The faeces produced increased from 13.2% after 2.5 h to 21.9% after 10 h, and decreased until 40 h with 16.2%. The carbon-dioxide respired increased slowly to 5% after 40 h. These data on the functioning of the different compartments suggest an important recycling of the metabolic products of the bivalves by the bacteria of the suspension, demonstrating the role of bacteria as food for bivalves.  相似文献

Change in a bacterial population during the process of degradation of a phytoplankton bloom was investigated at Lake Hamana, Japan in June 1981. The predominant phytoplankton were Prorocentrum micans Ehrenberg and P. triestinum Schiller. While most phytoplankton cells were living and moving actively, most bacteria were those in a free-living state (free-living bacteria) and the number of bacteria associated with particulate materials (attached bacteria) was less than a few percent of the total bacterial number. As the decline process proceeded, the number of free-living bacteria remained almost constant or decreased slightly; on the other hand, the number of attached bacteria increased gradually and reached about 40% of the total bacterial number. These results indicate that some of the free-living bacteria become attached to particulate organic matter and grow on the surface of the particles.  相似文献

A marine gliding bacterium Cytophaga sp. (strain J18/M01) was isolated from Harima-Nada, eastern Seto Inland Sea, Japan in 1990. This bacterium preys upon various species of marine phytoplankton. All of the five raphidophycean flagellates, all of the four diatoms, and one of the two dinoflagellates examined were killed within a few days when cultured with the bacterium. The bacterium presumably achieves this by direct attack, because the culture filtrate in which host organisms were totally destroyed had no significant effects on the growth of the same host organism (Chattonella antiqua). If one or a few bacterial cells were inoculated into C. antiqua culture, all of the host organisms were killed. The bacterium proliferated in filter-sterilized seawater, suggesting its ubiquitous existence in the coastal sea. The killing of phytoplankton by bacteria such as Cytophaga sp. J18/M01 may be a significant factor influencing the population dynamics of phytoplankton in nature and may contribute to the sudden disappearance of red tides in the coastal sea. Bacterial destruction of phytoplankton may also be a factor that regulates primary productivity in marine ecosystems.  相似文献

Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) is well known to be involved in many aspects of bivalve biology, especially in the control of reproductive function. In this work, a neurochemical and immunohistochemical study was carried out in the visceral ganglion of Venus verrucosa (Bivalvia: Veneridae), with the aim of elucidating the features of 5-HT neurotransmission and its influence on gamete emission in this poorly investigated bivalve species. 5-HT release was characterized: tritium efflux, evoked from the isolated [3H]5-HT-preincubated visceral ganglion by high potassium concentrations, was shown to possess the characteristics of neurotransmitter release (sodium and calcium dependence, auto-feedback regulation). Serotonergic cell bodies and axonal tracts were labeled by immunohistochemistry, confirming that the released 5-HT originates in a pool of neurons in the visceral ganglion. The presence and distribution of serotonin were immunohistochemically checked in the gonads as well. A plexus of immunopositive fibers was observed in the gonadic tissue of both sexes, specifically located in the follicle walls, and this innervation appeared to come from branching of the cerebro-visceral connectives, whereas no peripheral serotonergic neurons were identified. The immunohistochemical data were supported by light and electron microscope observations. Exogenous 5-HT was applied to V. verrucosa specimens by intramuscular injection; it induced spawning in both sexes, and the response rate was significantly higher in males than in females, as previously observed in some other species of gonochoric bivalves. These findings suggest the existence of a serotonergic neurotransmission in V. verrucosa, possibly regulating the reproductive process.Communicated by R. Cattaneo-Vietti, Genova  相似文献

In this work the biokinetics of 51CrO2 4 in the edible mollusc Venus Verrucosa were studied. Laboratory uptake experiments, using two groups of Venus verrucosa, were performed, in aquaria containing sea water with Na2 51CrO2 4 , in concentrations of 40 and 80 μCi/201 respectively. The distribution pattern of 51CrO2 4 in the body of V. verrucosa was studied. The biological half time of 51CrO2 4 was also found (Tb1/2 = 41.8d). The concentration factors for 51CrO2 4 were found to be low (k~2) for both concentrations used. From the accumulated whole body radioactivity 59.0% was found in the shell. In the internal tissues viscera and gills display the greater ability to accumulate 51Cr in its hexavalent state.  相似文献
