As part of a study examining the technical basis for a secondary national ambient air quality standard for fine particulate matter to protect visibility, we reviewed available data on atmospheric aerosol and visibility in the eastern U.S. This paper presents the results of that visibility and aerosol characterization.

Analysis of airport visibility data indicates that the annual median visual ranges in the East are in the 16-25 km range. In the absence of a "reference method," limited measurements of visibility using various types of instruments provide data generally in agreement with the airport visibility estimates when a contrast threshold of 0.05 is assumed in calculating visual range from the instrumental measurements.

Both long- and short-term aerosol measurements have yielded consistent results; however, because of the differences in instrumentation and laboratory analytical techniques among various studies, data often are not directly comparable. The measured annual average fine particulate matter mass concentration is about 18 μg/m3 in the rural East; during summer it increases to about 23 μg/m3. If all the sulfur in the fine mass is assumed to exist as ammonium sulfate, it would constitute 46 percent of the annual mean and about 60 percent of the summer mean fine mass concentrations. Carbon and volatiles, including water, are believed to constitute significant fractions of the fine mass; however, there are little data quantifying their contributions to fine mass and visibility impairment. Additional long-term measurements of visibility and fine aerosol and its various components are necessary to completely characterize visibility and aerosol in the East.  相似文献

A Micro-Orifice Uniform Deposition Impactor (MOUDI) and a Nano-MOUDI were employed to determine the size-segregated mass distributions of ambient particulate matter (PM) and water-soluble ionic species for particulate constituents. In addition, gas precursors, including HCl, HONO, HNO3, SO2, and NH3 gases, were analyzed by an annular denuder system. PM size mass distribution, mass concentration, and ionic species concentration were measured during the day and at night during episode and non-episode periods in winter and summer. Average total suspended particle (TSP) concentrations during episode days in winter were as high as 153?±?33 μg/m3, and PM mass concentrations in summer were as low as one-third of that in winter. Generally, PM concentration at night was higher than that in the daytime in southern Taiwan during the sampling periods. In winter during the episode periods, the size-segregated mass distribution of PM mass concentration was mostly in the 0.32–3.2-μm range, and the PM concentration increased significantly in the range of 0.32–3.2 μm at night. Ammonium, nitrate, and sulfate were the dominant water-soluble ionic species in PM, contributing 34–48 % of TSP mass. High concentrations of ammonia (12.9–49 μg/m3) and SO2 (2.6–27 μg/m3) were observed in the gas precursors. The conversion ratio was high in the PM size range of 0.18–3.2 μm both during the day and at night in winter, and the conversion ratio of episode days was 20 % higher than that of non-episode days. The conversion factor was high for both nitrogen and sulfur species at nighttime, especially on episode days.  相似文献

Exposure to ambient particulate matter (PM) is known as a significant risk factor for mortality and morbidity due to cardiorespiratory causes. Owing to increased interest in assessing personal and community exposures to PM, we evaluated the feasibility of employing a low-cost portable direct-reading instrument for measurement of ambient air PM exposure. A Dylos DC 1700 PM sensor was collocated with a Grimm 11-R in an urban residential area of Houston Texas. The 1-min averages of particle number concentrations for sizes between 0.5 and 2.5 µm (small size) and sizes larger than 2.5 µm (large size) from a DC 1700 were compared with the 1-min averages of PM2.5 (aerodynamic size less than 2.5 µm) and coarse PM (aerodynamic size between 2.5 and 10 µm) concentrations from a Grimm 11-R. We used a linear regression equation to convert DC 1700 number concentrations to mass concentrations, utilizing measurements from the Grimm 11-R. The estimated average DC 1700 PM2.5 concentration (13.2 ± 13.7 µg/m3) was similar to the average measured Grimm 11-R PM2.5 concentration (11.3 ± 15.1 µg/m3). The overall correlation (r2) for PM2.5 between the DC 1700 and Grimm 11-R was 0.778. The estimated average coarse PM concentration from the DC 1700 (5.6 ± 12.1 µg/m3) was also similar to that measured with the Grimm 11-R (4.8 ± 16.5 µg/m3) with an r2 of 0.481. The effects of relative humidity and particle size on the association between the DC 1700 and the Grimm 11-R results were also examined. The calculated PM mass concentrations from the DC 1700 were close to those measured with the Grimm 11-R when relative humidity was less than 60% for both PM2.5 and coarse PM. Particle size distribution was more important for the association of coarse PM between the DC 1700 and Grimm 11-R than it was for PM2.5.

Implications: The performance of a low-cost particulate matter (PM) sensor was evaluated in an urban residential area. Both PM2.5 and coarse PM (PM10-2.5) mass concentrations were estimated using a DC1700 PM sensor. The calculated PM mass concentrations from the number concentrations of DC 1700 were close to those measured with the Grimm 11-R when relative humidity was less than 60% for both PM2.5 and coarse PM. Particle size distribution was more important for the association of coarse PM between the DC 1700 and Grimm 11-R than it was for PM2.5.  相似文献

Abstract

In this investigation, the collection efficiency of particulate emission control devices (PECDs), particulate matter (PM) emissions, and PM size distribution were determined experimentally at the inlet and outlet of PECDs at five coal-fired power plants. Different boilers, coals, and PECDs are used in these power plants. Measurement in situ was performed by an electrical low-pressure impactor with a sampling system, which consisted of an isokinetic sampler probe, precut cyclone, and two-stage dilution system with a sample line to the instruments. The size distribution was measured over a range from 0.03 to 10 µm. Before and after all of the PECDs, the particle number size distributions display a bimodal distribution. The PM2.5 fraction emitted to atmosphere includes a significant amount of the mass from the coarse particle mode. The controlled and uncontrolled emission factors of total PM, inhalable PM (PM10), and fine PM P(M2.5) were obtained. Electrostatic precipitator (ESP) and baghouse total collection efficiencies are 96.38–99.89% and 99.94%, respectively. The minimum collection efficiency of the ESP and the baghouse both appear in the particle size range of 0.1–1 µm. In this size range, ESP and baghouse collection efficiencies are 85.79–98.6% and 99.54%. Real-time measurement shows that the mass and number concentration of PM10 will be greatly affected by the operating conditions of the PECDs. The number of emitted particles increases with increasing boiler load level because of higher combustion temperature. During test run periods, the data reproducibility is satisfactory.  相似文献

For continuous monitoring of atmospheric visibility in the city of Kwangju, Korea, a transmissometer system consisting of a transmitter and a receiver was installed at a distance of 1.91 km across the downtown Kwangju, Korea. At the transmitter site a nephelometer and an aethalometer were also installed to measure the scattering and absorption coefficients of the atmosphere, respectively. Unusually high number of Yellow Sand events had occurred in the Northeast Asia during the spring of 2000. Visibility in Kwangju under such conditions was greatly impaired over large area for a few days. In order to investigate the effects of Yellow Sand on visibility impairment, chemical and elemental analyses of aerosol samples were performed along with the optical measurement of visibility. Hourly averaged visual range decreased from 61.7 to 1.9 km when hourly averaged concentration of PM10 varied from 32.9 to 601.8 μg/m3 during Yellow Sand periods. Fine particulate (<2.5 μm) concentrations were relatively lower than coarse particulate matters. Results of the data analyses show that mineral dusts originated from continental sources were simultaneously transported along with anthropogenic sulfate aerosols and marine aerosols. Total light extinction coefficient, bext, proposed by the IMPROVE network showed poor correlation with bext measured by transmissometer. Coarse mass scattering efficiency was classified into three categories; ENHSOc, Emineral, and Esea-salt, which were determined as ammonium sulfate combined with nss-sulfate of 1.0, sea-salt of 0.4, and mineral of 0.77 m2/g, respectively. Mass fraction of NHSOc, sea-salt, and mineral dust was 0.20, 0.14, and 0.66, respectively.  相似文献

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed a new secondary standard based on visibility in urban areas. The proposed standard will be based on light extinction, calculated from 24-hr averaged measurements. It would be desirable to base the standard on a shorter averaging time to better represent human perception of visibility. This could be accomplished by either an estimation of extinction from semicontinuous particulate matter (PM) data or direct measurement of scattering and absorption. To this end we have compared 1-hr measurements of fine plus coarse particulate scattering using a nephelometer, along with an estimate of absorption from aethalometer measurements. The study took place in Lindon, UT, during February and March 2012. The nephelometer measurements were corrected for coarse particle scattering and compared to the Filter Dynamic Measurement System (FDMS) tapered element oscillating microbalance monitor (TEOM) PM2.5 measurements. The two measurements agreed with a mass scattering coefficient of 3.3 ± 0.3 m2/g at relative humidity below 80%. However, at higher humidity, the nephelometer gave higher scattering results due to water absorbed by ammonium nitrate and ammonium sulfate in the particles. This particle-associated water is not measured by the FDMS TEOM. The FDMS TEOM data could be corrected for this difference using appropriate IMPROVE protocols if the particle composition is known. However, a better approach may be to use a particle measurement system that allows for semicontinuous measurements but also measures particle bound water. Data are presented from a 2003 study in Rubidoux, CA, showing how this could be accomplished using a Grimm model 1100 aerosol spectrometer or comparable instrument.

Implications: Visibility is currently based on 24-hr averaged PM mass and composition. A metric that captures diurnal changes would better represent human perception. Furthermore, if the PM measurement included aerosol bound water, this would negate the need to know particulate composition and relative humidity (RH), which is currently used to estimate visibility. Methods are outlined that could accomplish both of these objectives based on use of a PM monitor that includes aerosol-bound water. It is recommended that these techniques, coupled with appropriate measurements of light scattering and absorption by aerosols, be evaluated for potential use in the visibility based secondary standard.  相似文献

Atmospheric ammonia mixing ratios and the main inorganic ions NH4+, NO3 and SO42− of size-resolved particles in the range from 0.05 to 10 μm were measured at an urban site in Münster, Germany. High mixing ratios of ammonia with a median of 5.2 ppb and a maximum of 50 ppb were detected. The mass fraction of submicron particles was much higher during the day than at night. At night, a greater particle mass and an increased presence of particulate nitrate was measured. Recurring patterns of particle distribution were distinguished and their characteristics analysed. In half of the measurements, the accumulation mode was clearly dominating, which is an indication of aged aerosol. In some measurements, higher concentrations of fine particles were found indicating particle formation. In these cases, a smaller particle mass and about four times greater ratios of ammonia versus ammonium concentrations were observed. These data show that ammonia contributes considerably to the formation of secondary particulate material.  相似文献

In order to investigate the chemical characteristics of atmospheric aerosol measured during a severe winter haze event, 12-hr PM2.5 (particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter ≤2.5 μm) samples were collected at an urban site in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, from January 9 to February 17, 2008. On average, 12-hr PM2.5 mass concentration was 105.1 ± 34.9 μg/m3. Low PM2.5 mass concentrations were measured when low pressure developed over central Mongolia. The 12-hr average organic mass by carbon (OMC) varied from 6.4 to 132.3 μg/m3, with a mean of 54.9 ± 25.4 μg/m3, whereas elemental carbon (EC) concentration ranged from 0.1 to 3.6 μgC/m3, with a mean of 1.5 ± 0.8 μgC/m3. Ammonium sulfate was found to be the most abundant water-soluble ionic component in Ulaanbaatar during the sampling period, with an average concentration of 11.3 ± 5.0 μg/m3. In order to characterize the effect of air mass pathway on fine particulate matter characteristics, 5-day back-trajectory analysis was conducted, using the Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) model. The haze level was classified into three categories, based on the 5-day air mass back trajectories, as Stagnant (ST), Continental (CT), and Low Pressure (LP) cases. PM2.5 mass concentration during the Stagnant condition was approximately 2.5 times higher than that during the Low Pressure condition, mainly due to increased pollutant concentration of OMC and secondary ammonium sulfate.

Implications: Mongolia is experiencing rapid rates of urbanization similar to other Asian countries, resulting in air pollution problems by the growing number of automobiles and industrialization. Ulaanbaatar, capital of Mongolia, is inherently vulnerable to air pollution because of its emission sources, topography, and meteorological characteristics. Very limited measurements on chemical characteristics of particulate matter have been carried out in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.  相似文献

The University of Arizona and the Pima County Air Pollution Control District conducted a comparison study of the following aerosol samplers: a standard high-volume sampler, a high-volume sampler fitted with a size selective inlet, and a dichotomous virtual impactor. Over sixty samples were collected with the colocated samplers during the first six months of 1981. The concentration (μg/m3) of suspended particulate matter and of sulfate was determined for all the samples, while the concentration of four lithophilic elements (Ca, Fe, Mg, and K) was determined on one third of the samples. Well-defined linear relationships for suspended particulate matter and sulfate were found to exist between each of the three sample collection methods over the concentrafion range encountered in this study. For these samples, there were significant differences in the particulate mass and large particle lithophilic element concentrations collected by each device. However, sulfate values obtained from the three samplers were in excellent agreement with each other. This suggests that the inlet collection efficiency for large particles differs significantly for these three sampling devices. Since the size selective inlet and the dichotomous virtual impactor samplers are each designed for collection of inhalable particles (particles of 15 μm aerodynamic diameter and smaller), they would have been expected to measure approximately equivalent particle mass concentrations. Thus, these differences are important to those interested in selecting a method for measuring airborne particle mass concentrations.  相似文献

Abstract

A mobile exposure and air pollution measurement system was developed and used for on-freeway ultrafine particle health effects studies. A nine-passenger van was modified with a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filtration system that can deliver filtered or unfiltered air to an exposure chamber inside the van. State-of-the-art instruments were used to measure concentration and size distribution of fine and ultrafine particles and the concentration of carbon monoxide (CO), black carbon (BC), particle-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), fine particulate matter (PM2.5) mass, and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) inside the exposure chamber. This paper presents the construction and technical details of the van and air pollutant concentrations collected in 32 2-hr runs on two major Los Angeles freeways, Interstate 405 (I-405; mostly gasoline traffic) and Interstate 710 (I-710; large proportion of heavy-duty diesel traffic). More than 97% of particles were removed when the flow through the filter box was switched from bypass mode to filter mode while the vehicle was driving on both freeways. The filtration system thus provides a great particulate matter exposure contrast while keeping gas-phase pollutant concentrations the same. Under bypass mode, average total particle number concentration observed inside the exposure chamber was around 8.4 × 104 and 1.3 × 105 particles cm-3 on the I-405 and the I-710 freeways, respectively. Bimodal size distributions were consistent and similar for both freeways with the first mode around 16–20 nm and the second mode around 50–55 nm. BC and particle-bound PAH concentrations were more than two times greater on the I-710 than on the I-405 freeway. Very weak correlations were observed between total particle number concentrations and other vehicular pollutants on the freeways.  相似文献

Abstract

The concentration of fine particulate nitrate, sulfate, and carbonaceous material was measured for 12-hr day-night samples using diffusion denuder samplers during the Project Measurement of Haze and Visibility Effects (MOHAVE) July to August 1992 Summer Intensive study at Meadview, AZ, just west of Grand Canyon National Park. Organic material was measured by several techniques. Only the diffusion denuder method measured the semivolatile organic material. Fine particulate sulfate and nitrate (using denuder technology) determined by various groups agreed. Based on the various collocated measurements obtained during the Project MOHAVE study, the precision of the major fine particulate species was ±0.6 μg/m3 organic material, ±0.3 μg/m3 ammonium sulfate, and ±0.07 μg/m3 ammonium nitrate. Data were also available on fine particulate crustal material, fine and coarse particulate mass from the Interagency Monitoring of Protected Visual Environments sampling system, and relative humidity (RH), light absorption, particle scattering, and light extinction measurements from Project MOHAVE. An extinction budget was obtained using mass scattering coefficients estimated from particle size distribution data. Literature data were used to estimate the change in the mass scattering coefficients for the measured species as a function of RH and for the absorption of light by elemental carbon. Fine particulate organic material was the principal particulate contributor to light extinction during the study period, with fine particulate sulfate as the second most important contributor. During periods of highest light extinction, contributions from fine particulate organic material, sulfate, and light-absorbing carbon dominated the extinction of light by particles. Particle light extinction was dominated by sulfate and organic material during periods of lowest light extinction. Combination of the extinction data and chemical mass balance analysis of sulfur oxides sources in the region indicate that the major anthropogenic contributors to light extinction were from the Los Angeles, CA, and Las Vegas, NV, urban areas. Mohave Power Project associated secondary sulfate was a negligible contributor to light extinction.  相似文献

From 1 May to 25 May 2001, the BAB II campaign was carried out at the motorway BAB (656) near Heidelberg. Atmospheric concentrations of particulate matter and gases were measured together with the meteorological conditions. This paper is focused on the particulate matter measured upwind and downwind from the motorway at ground level. In order to determine the source contribution from the motorway traffic, it was necessary to measure upwind and downwind simultaneously due to variations in background concentrations. The particle number contribution from the motorway was found to be 35,000 particles cm−3 for particles with diameters close to 20 nm and 5000 particles cm−3 for particles with diameters close to 70 nm. Bimodal size distributions were observed on the downwind side, whereas the upwind side showed unimodal size distributions. For particulate mass, it can be estimated that the contribution from the motorway to the PM1 concentrations is in a range 0.6–1.3 μg m−3 for the chosen measurement sites approximately 60 m from the road at a height of 6 m. The soot measurements showed diurnal variation; however, the upwind downwind difference was not measured. Correlation factors showed good correlation between total particle number and number of particles with diameters below 80 nm, CO and NO. There was no correlation between particle number and PM10, which is due to the observation that particle number was dominated by the 20 nm particles.  相似文献

Measurements of the physical properties of particles in the atmosphere of a UK urban area have been made, including particle number count by condensation nucleus counters with different lower particle size cut-offs; particle size distributions using a Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer; total particle Fuchs surface area using an epiphaniometer and particle mass using Tapered Element Oscillating Micro-balance (TEOM) instruments with size selective (PM10 and PM2.5) inlets. Mean particle number counts at three sites range from 2.86×104 to 9.60×104 cm-3. A traffic-influenced location showed a substantially higher ratio of particle number to PM10 mass than a nearby background location despite being some 70 m from the roadway. Operating two condensation nucleus counters in tandem to determine particles in the 3–7 nm size range by difference showed signficant numbers of particles in this range, apparently related to homogeneous nucleation processes. Measurements with the Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer showed a clear difference between roadside size distributions and those at a nearby background location with an additional mode in the roadside samples below 10 nm diameter. Particle number counts were found to show a significant linear correlation with PM10 mass (r2=0.44; n=44 for 24 h data at an urban background location), although during one period of high pollution a curvilinear relationship was found. Measurements of the diurnal variation in PM10 mass, particle number count and Fuchs surface area show the same general pattern of behaviour of the three variables, explicable in terms of vehicle emission source strength and atmospheric dispersion, although the surface area growth was out of phase with the particle number and mass. It appears that particle number gives the clearest indication of recent road traffic emissions.  相似文献

Indoor sources have been identified as a major contributor to the increase of particle concentration in indoor environments. The work presented here is a study of the characteristics of particulate matter number size distribution and mass concentration under controlled indoor activities in a laboratory room. The objective is to characterize particulate matter concentrations indoors resulted under the influence of specific sources. Measurements were performed in an empty laboratory (period September–October 2006) using a GRIMM SMPS+C system (particle size range between 11.1 and 1083.3 nm), a DustTrak Aerosol Monitor (TSI) and a P-Trak Ultrafine Particle Counter (TSI). The studied indoor activities included candle burning, hot plate heating, water boiling, onion frying, vacuuming, hair drying, hair spraying, smoking and burning of incense stick. The AMANpsd computer algorithm was used to evaluate the modal structure of measured particle number size distribution data. Furthermore, the change of the particle number size distribution shape under the influence of different emission sources was studied versus time. Finally the particle emission rates were computed. High particle number concentrations were observed during smoking, onion frying, candle burning and incense stick burning. The highest particle mass concentrations were measured during smoking and hair spraying. The shift of the particle size distribution to larger diameters suggests the presence of strong coagulation effect during candle burning, incense stick burning, smoking and onion frying. The size distribution was mainly bimodal during onion frying and candle burning, whereas the size distribution remained unimodal during incense stick burning and smoking experiments.  相似文献

Abstract

Motor vehicle emissions usually constitute the most significant source of ultrafine particles (diameter <0.1 μm) in an urban environment, yet little is known about the concentration and size distribution of ultrafine particles in the vicinity of major highways. In the present study, particle number concentration and size distribution in the size range from 6 to 220 nm were measured by a condensation particle counter (CPC) and a scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS), respectively. Measurements were taken 30, 60, 90, 150, and 300 m downwind, and 300 m upwind, from Interstate 405 at the Los Angeles National Cemetery. At each sampling location, concentrations of CO, black carbon (BC), and particle mass were also measured by a Dasibi CO monitor, an aethalometer, and a DataRam, respectively. The range of average concentration of CO, BC, total particle number, and mass concentration at 30 m was 1.7?2.2 ppm, 3.4?10.0 μg/m3, 1.3?2.0 × 105/cm3, and 30.2?64.6 μ/m3, respectively.

For the conditions of these measurements, relative concentrations of CO, BC, and particle number tracked each other well as distance from the freeway increased. Particle number concentration (6–220 nm) decreased exponentially with downwind distance from the freeway. Data showed that both atmospheric dispersion and coagulation contributed to the rapid decrease in particle number concentration and change in particle size distribution with increasing distance from the freeway. Average traffic flow during the sampling periods was 13,900 vehicles/hr. Ninety-three percent of vehicles were gasoline-powered cars or light trucks. The measured number concentration tracked traffic flow well. Thirty meters downwind from the freeway, three distinct ultrafine modes were observed with geometric mean diameters of 13, 27, and 65 nm. The smallest mode, with a peak concentration of 1.6 × 105/cm3, disappeared at distances greater than 90 m from the freeway. Ultrafine particle number concentration measured 300 m downwind from the freeway was indistinguishable from upwind background concentration. These data may be used to estimate exposure to ultrafine particles in the vicinity of major highways.  相似文献

During August, 1982 and January and February, 1983, General Motors Research Laboratories operated air monitoring sites on the Atlantic Coast near Lewes, Delaware and 1250 km to the east on the southwest coast of Bermuda. The overall purpose of this project was to study the transformations of the principal acid precipitation precursors, NO x and SO x species, as they transport under conditions not complicated by emissions from local sources. In this paper, the measurements of gas and particulate species from Lewes are described and the composition and sources of sulfate aerosol, which is the most important haze-producing species, are investigated.

On the average, the total suspended particulate (TSP) concentration was 27.9 μg/m3 while the PM10 (mass of particles with a diameter less than or equal to 10 μm) concentration was 22.0 μg/m3 or 79 percent of the TSP. The PM10 consisted of 6.1 μg/m3 of coarse particles (CPM, diameter = 2.5 ? 10μm) and 15.9 μg/m3 of fine particles (FPM, diameter < 2.5 μm).

On a mass basis the most important constituents of the fine particulate fraction were sulfate compounds, 50 percent, and organic compounds, 30 percent. The mean light extinction coefficient corresponds to a visual range of 18-20 km. Most of the extinction can be attributed to the sulfate (60 percent) and organic carbon (13 percent). Particle size measurements show that the mass median aerodynamic diameter for both species is 0.43 μm. This is a typical size for a hydrated sulfate aerosol. For carbon, however, this is a larger size than previously reported and results in a more efficient light scattering aerosol. Principal component analyses indicate that coal combustion emissions from the midwestern U.S. are the most significant source of sulfate in Lewes during the summer and winter.  相似文献

Total suspended particulate (TSP) samples were seasonally collected at the air exhaust of 15 commercial concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs; including swine finishing, swine farrowing, swine gestation, laying hen, and tom turkey) in the U.S. Midwest. The measured TSP concentrations ranged from 0.38 ± 0.04 mg m?3 (swine gestation in summer) to 10.9 ± 3.9 mg m?3 (tom turkey in winter) and were significantly affected by animal species, housing facility type, feeder type (dry or wet), and season. The average particle size of collected TSP samples in terms of mass median equivalent spherical diameter ranged from 14.8 ± 0.5 µm (swine finishing in winter) to 30.5 ± 2.0 µm (tom turkey in summer) and showed a significant seasonal effect. This finding affirmed that particulate matter (PM) released from CAFOs contains a significant portion of large particles. The measured particle size distribution (PSD) and the density of deposited particles (on average 1.65 ± 0.13 g cm?3) were used to estimate the mass fractions of PM10 and PM2.5 (PM ≤10 and ≤2.5 μm, respectively) in the collected TSP. The results showed that the PM10 fractions ranged from 12.7 ± 5.1% (tom turkey) to 21.1 ± 3.2% (swine finishing), whereas the PM2.5 fractions ranged from 3.4 ± 1.9% (tom turkey) to 5.7 ± 3.2% (swine finishing) and were smaller than 9.0% at all visited CAFOs. This study applied a filter-based method for PSD measurement and deposited particles as a surrogate to estimate the TSP’s particle density. The limitations, along with the assumptions adopted during the calculation of PM mass fractions, must be recognized when comparing the findings to other studies.

Implications: The concentration, size, and density of TSP samples varied greatly with animal species, housing facility type, feeder type, and season, suggesting that PM emission data derived from limited measurements may not be readily applied to estimate the overall emission from concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs). This study also affirmed that particles released from CAFOs is of relatively high density (~1.65 g cm?3) and with diameter mostly larger than 10 µm, indicating that regular PM abatement devices, such as cyclones, fabric filters, or even a simple downward-facing exhaust duct, may be employed to mitigate the TSP emission with acceptable efficiency.  相似文献

Abstract

An analysis of ozone (O3) concentrations and several other air quality-related variables was performed to elucidate their relationship with visibility at five urban and semi-urban locations in the southeast United States during the summer seasons of 1980-1996. The role and impact of O3 on aerosols was investigated to ascertain a relationship with visibility. Regional trend analysis over the 1980s reveals an increase in maximum O3 concentration coupled with a decrease in visibility. However, a similar analysis for the 1990s shows a leveling-off of both O3 and visibility; in both cases, the results were not statistically significant at the 5% level. A case study of site-specific trends at Nashville, TN, followed similar trends. To better understand the relationships between O3 concentration and visibility, the analysis was varied from yearly through daily to hourly averaged values. This increased temporal resolution showed a statistically significant inverse relationship between visibility and O3. Site-specific hourly r2 values ranged from 0.02 to 0.43. Additionally, by performing back-trajectory analysis, it was found that the visibility degraded by air mass migration over polluted areas.  相似文献

Atmospheric aerosol particulate matter was directly collected in the free troposphere over the Japan Sea coast between 1992 and 1994 using an aircraft-borne nine-stage cascade impactor (particle size range: 0.1–8 μm). The water-soluble components in the aerosol particulate matter were analyzed by ion chromatography. Particulate sulfate and ammonium were detected in most of the samples and their size distributions showed noticeable peaks below the 1 μm particle size range. Water-soluble calcium (Ca2+) was detected in half of the samples; the size distribution showed that the maximum particle size was larger than 1 μm. Highly concentrated Ca2+ in larger particles was possibly due to transport of Kosa aerosols from the Asian continent in the free troposphere. The concentration of fine particulate sulfate and ammonium tended to increase whenever Ca2+ was detected, which suggests possible mixing of Kosa aerosols and non-Kosa aerosols during long-range transport of air masses containing Kosa particles.  相似文献
