Environmental forensic analysis has evolved significantly from the early days of qualitative chemical fingerprint evaluations. The need for quantitative rigor has made the use of numerical methods critical in identifying and mapping contaminant sources in complex environmental systems. Given multiple contaminant sources, the environmental scientist is faced with the challenge of unraveling the contributions of multiple plumes with overlapping spatial and temporal distributions. The problem may be addressed through a multivariate statistical approach, but there is a mind-boggling array of the available "chemometric" methods. This paper provides an overview of these methods, along with a review of their advantages, disadvantages, and pitfalls. Methods discussed include principal component analysis and several receptor-modeling techniques.  相似文献

The Yangtze River has been a source of life and prosperity for the Chinese people for centuries and is a habitat for a remarkable variety of aquatic species. But the river suffers from huge amounts of urban sewage, agricultural effluents, and industrial wastewater as well as ship navigation wastes along its course. With respect to the vast amounts of water and sediments discharged by the Yangtze River, it is reasonable to ask whether the pollution problem may be solved by simple dilution. This article reviews the past two decades of published research on organic pollutants in the Yangtze River and several adjacent water bodies connected to the main stream, according to a holistic approach. Organic pollutant levels and potential effects of water and sediments on wildlife and humans, measured in vitro, in vivo, and in situ, were critically reviewed. The contamination with organic pollutants, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/polychlorinated dibenzofurans, polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), perfluorinated compounds (PFCs), and others, of water and sediment along the river was described. Especially Wuhan section and the Yangtze Estuary exhibited stronger pollution than other sections. Bioassays, displaying predominantly the endpoints mutagenicity and endocrine disruption, applied at sediments, drinking water, and surface water indicated a potential health risk in several areas. Aquatic organisms exhibited detectable concentrations of toxic compounds like PCBs, OCPs, PBDEs, and PFCs. Genotoxic effects could also be assessed in situ in fish. To summarize, it can be stated that dilution reduces the ecotoxicological risk in the Yangtze River, but does not eliminate it. Keeping in mind an approximately 14 times greater water discharge compared to the major European river Rhine, the absolute pollution mass transfer of the Yangtze River is of severe concern for the environmental quality of its estuary and the East China Sea. A four and a half year study of ozone concentrations in the Central Mediterranean was carried out between January 1997 and August 2001 on a background monitoring station located on the island of Gozo midway between Southern Europe and North Africa.Seasonal and diurnal variations of background ozone are documented. They show the existence of seasonal cycles with a primary maximum in spring followed by a secondary, more variable maximum in summer which indicates that photochemically produced ozone is being transported over the Mediterranean to the rural island of Gozo. Although peak ozone concentrations seldom exceeded 100 ppbv during summer, the background ozone-mixing ratios (as monthly averages) are some of the highest values which can be found at low latitude sites throughout the world. An increasing trend in the annual background ozone concentration from 48.2 ppbv in 1997 to 52.2 ppbv in 2000 is observed. During wintertime the average ozone mixing-ratio (as monthly averages) of 44 ppbv in December is approximately twice as high as on the European continent. This may imply that on Malta, due to higher average ozone concentrations between autumn and spring (the main growing season), crop damage of high economic value may occur.  相似文献

The SoA conference emphasized that urgent questions posed by society and decision-makers in response to rapid Arctic change require that Arctic research address the broader concepts of sustainability as well as adaptation to and mitigation of interrelated environmental and socioeconomic change. Murray et al. (submitted) explore progress made in this context. The SoA meeting demonstrated significant progress by the Arctic community of scientists and stakeholders in meeting this challenge, as well as the need to better engage the private sector and find more effective ways to partner with relevant research activities outside of the polar regions.  相似文献

The developmental status, projected costs, and environmental effects of 14 flue gas treatment processes are compared on a common basis in two consecutive issues of JAPCA. Part I summarizes the background and study basis and Part II compares environmental impact and relative costs. Each process is assumed to be associated with a grass roots installation that includes a modern 800 MW power plant burning Illinois No. 6 coal. Also considered is the effectiveness of these processes to control particulate matter, NO x , trace inorganics, and polyorganic matter.

The processes are divided into those operating once-through (Limestone, Lime, Limestone and Lime, Dual-Alkali), and with regeneration (Magnesia, Wellman-Lord, Citrate, Aqueous Carbonate, IFP-Catalytic Inc., Copper-Dry Bed, and Carbon-Dry Bed). Also analyzed are NO x control processes that are compatible with scrubbers or dry processes, and include the Exxon Thermal DeNO x , Ozone NO Oxidation, and Copper and Carbon-Dry Bed.  相似文献

There is a recent increase in the interest of designing high-performance photocatalysts using graphene-based materials. This review gathers some important aspects of graphene?CTiO2, graphene oxide?CTiO2, and reduced graphene oxide?CTiO2 composites, which are of especial relevance as next generation photocatalysts. The methods used for the preparation of these materials, the associated mechanistic fundamentals, and the application of graphene-based composites on the photocatalytic degradation of pollutants are reviewed. Some structural, textural, and chemical properties of these materials and other photo-assisted applications, such as hydrogen production from water splitting and dye-sensitized solar cells, are also briefly included.  相似文献

The products of the OH radical-initiated oxidation of dimethyl sulphide (DMS) have been investigated as a function of temperature (284, 295, and 306 K) and different initial NOx (NO+NO2) concentrations: initial NO was varied between 434 and 2821 ppb and NO2 between 135 and 739 ppb. The experiments were performed at 1000 mbar total pressure in synthetic air using the photolysis of H2O2 as the OH-radical source and FT-IR spectroscopy to monitor reactants and products. The major sulphur-containing products identified were SO2, dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO), dimethyl sulphone (DMSO2), methane sulphonic acid (MSA), methane sulphonyl peroxynitrate (MSPN) and OCS. The variation of the product yields with temperature and NOx concentration are consistent with the occurrence of both addition and abstraction channels in OH radical-initiated oxidation of DMS. Distinct trends in the yields of the various products have been observed as a function of temperature, initial NOx conditions and also reaction time as NO is consumed in the system. Increasing the initial NO concentration was found to depress the DMSO, SO2 and OCS formation yields and enhance those of DMSO2, MSA and MSPN. The yield–time behaviour of DMSO2 is supportive of a formation mechanism involving addition of O2 to a (CH3)2SOH adduct, formed via the addition channel, followed by sequential reactions with NO and O2. The mechanisms controlling the concentration–time profiles of the individual products under the present experimental conditions are discussed in detail and consideration is given to possible implications for the photo-oxidation of DMS under ambient conditions.  相似文献

The automobile exhausts are one of the major sources of particulate matter in urban areas and these particles are known to influence the atmospheric chemistry in a variety of ways. Because of this, the oxidation of dissolved sulfur dioxide by oxygen was studied in aqueous suspensions of particulates, obtained by scraping the particles deposited inside a diesel truck exhaust pipe (DEP). A variation in pH showed the rate to increase with increase in pH from 5.22 to about ~6.3 and to decrease thereafter becoming very slow at pH?=?8.2. In acetate-buffered medium, the reaction rate was higher than the rate in unbuffered medium at the same pH. Further, the rate was found to be higher in suspension than in the leachate under otherwise identical conditions. And, the reaction rate in the blank reaction was the slowest. This appears to be due to catalysis by leached metal ions in leachate and due to catalysis by leached metal ions and particulate surface both in suspensions. The kinetics of dissolved SO2 oxidation in acetate-buffered medium as well as in unbuffered medium at pH?=?5.22 were defined by rate law: k obs ?=?k 0?+?k cat [DEP], where k obs and k 0 are observed rate constants in the presence and the absence of DEP and k cat is the rate constant for DEP-catalyzed pathway. At pH?=?8.2, the reaction rate was strongly inhibited by DEP in buffered and unbuffered media. Results suggest that the DEP would have an inhibiting effect in those areas where rainwater pH is 7 or more. These results at high pH are of particular significance to the Indian subcontinent, because of high rainwater pH. Conversely, it indicates the DEP to retard the oxidation of dissolved SO2 and control rainwater acidification.

Background, aim, and scope

Many—if not all—organisms depend on so-called infochemicals, chemical substances in their surroundings which inform the receivers about their biotic and abiotic environment and which allow them to react adequately to these signals. Anthropogenic substances can interfere with this complex chemical communication system. This finding is called infochemical effect. So far, it is not known to what extent anthropogenic discharges act as infochemicals and influence life and reproduction of organisms in the environment because adequate testing methods to identify chemicals which show the infochemical effect and to quantify their effects have not been developed yet. The purpose of this article is to help and find suitable test designs.

Main features

Test systems used in basic research to elucidate the olfactory cascade and the communication of environmental organisms by infochemicals are plentiful. Some of them might be the basis for a quantified ecotoxicological analysis of the infochemical effect. In principle, test systems for the infochemical effect could be developed at each step of the chemosensory signal transduction and processing cascade.

Results

Experimental set-ups were compiled systematically under the aspect whether they might be usable for testing the infochemical effect of single chemicals in standardized quantifying laboratory experiments. For an appropriate ecotoxicological assessment of the infochemical effect, experimental studies of many disciplines, such as molecular biology, neurobiology, physiology, chemical ecology, and population dynamics, should be evaluated in detail before a decision can be made which test system, respectively which test battery, might be suited best. The test systems presented here are based on the knowledge of the genetic sequences for olfactory receptors, binding studies of odorants, signal transmission, and reactions of the receivers on the level of the organisms or the populations. The following basic approaches are conceivable to identify the role of an infochemical: binding studies to the odorant-binding protein or to the odorant receptor binding protein (e.g., by in situ hybridization and immunohistochemical studies), measurement of electrical signals of the receptor cells in the tissue (e.g., electroolfactograms, electroantennograms), registration of phenotypic changes (e.g., observation under the microscope), behavioral tests (e.g., in situ online biomonitoring, use of T-shaped olfactometers, tests of avoidance responses), measurement of population changes (e.g., cell density or turbidity measurements), and multispecies tests with observation of community structure and community function. The main focus of this study is on aquatic organisms.

Discussion

It is evident that the infochemical effect is a very complex sublethal endpoint, and it needs further studies with standardized quantitative methods to elucidate whether and to what extent the ecosystem is affected. The collection of approaches presented here is far from being complete but should serve as a point of depart for further experimental research.

Conclusions

This article is the first to compare various approaches for testing the infochemical effect. The development of a suitable test system will not be easy as there are a multitude of relevant chemicals, a multitude of relevant receptors, and a multitude of relevant reactions, and it must be expected that the effective concentrations are very low. The chemical communication is of utmost importance for the ecosystem and justifies great endeavors to find solutions to these technical problems.

Recommendations and perspectives

The infochemical effect is a new chapter in ecotoxicology. Will a new endpoint, the so-called infochemical effect, be required in addition to the actual standard test battery of Annex 5 to Commission Directive 92/69/EEC (EC 1992)? Finding the answer to this question is a big challenge that could be met by a comprehensive research project.  相似文献

Five algorithms and their variations for solving the advection equation were compared in terms of their accuracy, speed and storage requirements. The algorithms are a chapeau-function method including mass-lumping, Forester's method, a method called Filtering Remedy and Methodology, a Hermite-cubic orthogonal-collocation method and a quadratic function method. The test problem was the rotation of a cosine-shaped hill of concentration in a two-dimensional circular velocity field at three different time increments (or angular velocities). The forward-Euler time-integration scheme coupled with a balancing diffusion term was extensively used and was found to be superior to the Crank-Nicolson scheme in accuracy for the methods considered. Together with the results of Part I (Atmospheric Environment17, 11–24, 1983), Forester's method applied to the chapeau-function solution appears to be the best method for solving the advection equation in air-pollution modeling. The combined method retains the peak value well, has high accuracy with little or no negative concentration region, and requires short execution time and minimal memory storage.  相似文献

Abstract

The goal of the Regional Haze Rule (RHR) is to return visibility in class I areas (CIAs) to natural levels, excluding weather-related events, by 2064. Whereas visibility, the seeing of scenic vistas, is a near instantaneous and sight-path-dependent phenomenon, reasonable progress toward the RHR goal is assessed by tracking the incremental changes in 5-yr average visibility. Visibility is assessed using a haze metric estimated from 24-hr average aerosol measurements that are made at one location representative of the CIA. It is assumed that, over the 5-yr average, the aerosol loadings and relative humidity along all of the site paths are the same and can be estimated from the 24-hr measurements. It is further assumed that any time a site path may be obscured by weather (e.g., clouds and precipitation), there are other site paths within the CIA that are not. Therefore, when calculating the haze metric, sampling days are not filtered for weather conditions. This assumption was tested by examining precipitation data from multiple monitors for four CIAs. It is shown that, in general, precipitation did not concurrently occur at all monitors for a CIA, and precipitation typically occurred 3-8 hr or less in a day. In a recent paper in this journal, Ryan asserts that the haze metric should include contributions from precipitation and conducted a quantitative assessment incorrectly based on the assumption that the Optec NGN-2 nephelometer measurements include the effects of precipitation. However, these instruments are programmed to shut down during rain events, and any data logged are in error. He further assumes that precipitation occurs as often on the haziest days as the clearest days and that precipitation light scattering (bprecip) is independent of geographic location and applied an average bprecip derived for Great Smoky Mountains to diverse locations including the Grand Canyon. The stability of aqueous salt-solution aerosols was estimated by measuring the half-decay times of particle number, the particle coagulation rate constants, and the size spectra of particles sedimenting to the bottom of a test chamber.These parameters were studied in the presence of organic materials. Two techniques were employed for adding the organics; back blending the vapors with the air used to aerosolize the particles, and dissolving them in the salt solution prior to spraying. Organic substances used included ethyl alcohol, acetone, ethyl acetate, benzene, toluene, carbon tetrachloride, glycerine, and a nonionic surfactant.The experiments suggest that the cushion of sorbed organic vapor surrounding the particles impairs their collisions with one another, and the vapor-pressure characteristics of the organic substances support such a view.  相似文献
