An experimental investigation has been carried out to examine the effect of scale-up on the performance of scrubbers for a wide range of operating conditions. A pilot plant with a maximum air flow rate of 400 cfm and a water flow rate of 4 gpm was used for this study. For the same operating conditions, the performance of 1.5 in. orifice type scrubber was found better than that of 1.0 in. size. The results were categorized according to the size of the particles, classed as large (1.5 to 3.5μ diam), medium (0.6 to 1.5μ diam) and small (less than O.6μ diam). Although the magnitude of improvement of the collection efficiency was dependent on the operating conditions, differences to the extent of 20% were obtained. The improvement of the collection efficiency for the larger scrubber was found to be due to the influence of the main stream turbulence. 相似文献

Theoretical calculations and experimental measurements show that the collection of small aerosol particles (0.05 to 5 micron diameter range) by water droplets in spray scrubbers can be substantially increased by electrostatically charging the droplets and particles to opposite polarity. Measurements with a 140 acfm two chamber spray scrubber (7 seconds gas residence time) showed an increase in the overall particle collection efficiency from 68.8% tit uncharged conditions to 93.6% at charged conditions, with a dioctyl phthalate aerosol (1.05 μm particle mass mean diameter and 2.59 geometric standard deviation). The collection efficiency for 0.3 μm particles increased from 35 to 87% when charged. During 1973–1974 a 1000 acfm pilot plant electrostatic scrubber was constructed inside a 40 ft trailer for evaluation on controlling particu-late emissions from pulp mill operations (funded by Northwest Pulp and Paper Association). Field tests performed on the particle emissions exhausting from SO2 absorption towers treating the gases from a magnesium based sulfite recovery boiler have shown particle collection efficiencies ranging from about 60 to 99% by weight, depending on the electrostatic scrubber operating conditions. Energy requirements for the University of Washington electrostatic scrubber are about 0.5 hp/1000 acfm (350 Watts/1000 acfm) including gas pressure drop, water pressure drop, and electrostatic charging of the water spray droplets and the particles. 相似文献

The overall particle collection efficiencies of spray scrubbers using monodisperse droplets of 100,500, and 1000 microns diameter were calculated for the cases of evaporating and condensing droplets. The properties of the gas at the inlet to the spray scrubber were maintained constant at 150°F, 100% relative humidity, and 1 atmosphere pressure. At the liquid entrance to the spray scrubber, the water droplet temperature was 50° F for the condensing case and 180° F for the evaporating case. The liquid to gas flow rate ratio for all the calculations was held constant at 4 gal/1000 acf. The gas velocity in the co-current spray tower was 1 ft/sec in the downwind direction. The calculation results show that for the particles in the 0.01 to 10 Mm diameter range, the overall spray scrubber particle collection efficiency is greater with the cooler 50°F water (condensing case) than with the warmer 180°F water (evaporating case). The effect of diffusiophoresis and thermophoresis is noticeable for all the water droplet sizes considered, but is more significant for the larger water droplets. This greater effect for the larger water droplets compared to the smaller droplets is due to the longer existence of the temperature and water vapor concentration gradients between the water droplets and the surrounding gas. 相似文献

This paper presents the results of work conducted by Research-Cottrell under EPA contract 68-02-2104. The feasibility of electrostatic precipitation at temperatures and pressures varying from ambient condition to 1366°K and 3550 kPa, respectively, has been demonstrated in a laboratory wire-pipe electrode system. Stable corona discharges are obtained at all temperatures subject to appropriate choices of electrode dimension, polarity, and pressure. Current-voltage characteristics are reported for dry air, a simulated combustion gas, and a substitute fuel gas. The effects of temperature, pressure, electrode geometry and polarity on sparkover voltage, corona-starting voltage, and current are evaluated. A precipitator performance model is included to incorporate this data into a high temperature, high pressure precipitator design. This model has been evaluated for an electrostatic (HTHP) precipitator following a pressurized fluidized bed combustor at 1089 K and 920 kPa. It is recommended that prototype HTHP electrostatic precipitators be applied to pilot coal gasifiers and fluidized bed combustors to obtain detailed design data and to verify the accuracy of the performance model under actual operating conditions. 相似文献

The fly ash collection characteristics of a pulse-jet fabric filter have been studied. Fly ash penetration was found to decrease as the dust deposit increased from 0 to 60 micrometers in thickness, to increase as face velocity through the bags increased from 5 to 15 cm/s, and to remain relatively constant for particles from 0.3 to 4.0 µm in diameter. Experiments employing chemically tagged fly ash were performed to investigate three dust penetration mechanisms. On resumption of filtering after cleaning, penetration by straight through dust loss declined rapidly from its maximum, reached a minimum, and then increased. Seepage of dust through the fabric was found to be constant throughout the filtration cycle. Dust lost as pinhole plugs increased after cleaning, passed through a maximum, and then declined. The pinholes appeared to open the way for further penetration by the straight through mechanism. 相似文献

Performance data for fabric filters using either woven or felt bags can be better understood when fault processes such as pinhole bypass and seepage are considered. Penetration straight through the dust cake and fabric may not be important by comparison. Observed trends of increased penetration with increased filtration velocity, constant or slightly increased penetration with increasing particle diameter, and constant penetration with additional dust loading can be explained by fault processes. The pulse-jet experimental work described here, done over many filtration and cleaning cycles, shows that penetration increases substantially with increasing filtration velocity and that this increase is due entirely to seepage. 相似文献

The high temperature, high pressure fluidized bed coal combustor concept is intended to deliver a low dust content combustion gas at 1600°F and 11 atmospheres to a gas turbine for electricity generation. The perceived advantages of the system are 1) 15-20% increase in fuel efficiency and 2) flue gas desulfurization by adding crushed limestone to the fluidized bed combustor. A major R & D effort, supported by DOE, EPA, EPRI, and others, was undertaken to identify one or more gas cleaning systems of commercial size capable of 1) meeting EPA’s new source performance standards for coal burning power plants and 2) operating reliably under the severe environmental conditions specified. The principal gas cleaning systems that have been investigated for this service include: ceramic cleanable cloth filters, granular bed filters, rigid, porous ceramic structures, and electrostatic precipitators. Some of the fly ash collectors have been operated up to pilot scale size under realistic conditions. In spite of several years of intensive effort and many millions of dollars expended, production of a commercial unit has not been realized. A major content of this paper is a review of the accomplishments and failures of each of the fly ash collector concepts and a series of recommendations to guide future R & D efforts. 相似文献

The information in this paper is directed to those concerned with controlling SO2 emissions from power plants, and particularly with retrofitting controls onto existing plants. The paper describes an FGD system based on the dolomitic lime process and the scrubber design that have proved successful at the Colstrip plant in eastern Montana. A single scrubber vessel sized to treat all the gas from a 350-MWe coal-fired unit combines the functions of prequenching, absorption, washing, mist elimination, and recycle storage. Downflow Injection of gas along the vessel centerline and regulation of gas flow by the wash tray make the gas velocity uniform and permit scaling up to this large size. A high concentration of dissolved alkalinity in the scrubbing slurry provides rapid absorption and permits low L/G—40 gal/1000 acf—when coal with 2.5% sulfur is burned. Complete oxidation of sulfite makes gypsum of wallboard quality and the process can discharge clarified liquor low in COD if necessary to control chlorides. Since only the single scrubber vessel and the recycle pumps must be located close to the back end of the boiler, the system is particularly well suited for retrofit applications. 相似文献

Radionuclide levels in vegetation from a High Arctic location were studied and compared to in situ soil concentrations. Levels of the anthropogenic radionuclide 137Cs and the natural radionuclides 40K, 238U, 226Ra and 232Th are discussed and transfer factor (TF) values and aggregated transfer (Tag) values are calculated for vascular plants. Levels of 137Cs in vegetation generally followed the order mosses > lichen > vascular plants. The uptake of 137Cs in vascular plants showed an inverse relationship with the uptake of 40K, with 137Cs TF and Tag values generally higher than 40K TF and Tag values. 40K activity concentrations in all vegetation showed little correlation to associated soil concentrations, while the uptake of 238U, 226Ra and 232Th by vascular and non-vascular plants was generally low. 相似文献

This paper describes a quality control technique used by the central headquarters operation of the Continuous Air Monitoring Program in an ejjort to insure valid data production from instruments located at remote sampling stations. The procedure consists of preparation of 0.10 to 2.00 ppm mixtures of SO2 or NO2 in duplicate Mylar bags, each encased in a corrugated paper box. These mixtures are analyzed during make-up to insure duplication. One box is shipped to the field station where it is analyzed on-site. The control mixture is analyzed in the central lab at the same time. Correlation between measurements indicates the usefulness of this dynamic calibration check. The experimental setup was designed to study the effect of natural charging of droplets during spraying (called spray electrification or spray charging) in a wet scrubber. The influence of nozzle material, liquid feed rate, and liquid composition on the specific charge (charge per unit volume of liquid) formed in spraying was measured. It was found that the nozzle material has no measurable effect on this specific charge. Increasing the liquid feed rate increases the specific charge significantly. Increasing solute (NaCl or NaOH) concentration increases the conductivity that decreases the formed specific charge. The same correlation between the specific charge and conductivity was also observed with real scrubbing liquids. It is proposed that the specific charge depends only on the value of liquid conductivity, not on liquid composition. The conductivity of the tested scrubbing liquids was high enough to suppress the formation of a high specific charge during spraying. 相似文献

Pulse-jet filter cleaning is ineffective to the extent that collected dust redeposits rather than falls to the hopper. Dust tracer techniques were used to measure the amount of redeposition in a pilot scale pulse-jet filter. A mathematical model based on experimental results was developed to describe dust transfer from bag to bag, redeposition on the pulsed bag itself, and migration to the dust hopper. Dust redeposition upon the pulsed bag increased markedly with increasing filtration velocity, whereas migration and redeposition on bags adjacent to the pulsed bag decreased. For high velocity pulse-jet filters to operate at lowest possible pressure drop, filter cake redeposition must be minimized. 相似文献

Abstract Biofiltration has been increasingly used for cleaning waste gases, mostly containing low concentrations of odorous compounds. To expand the application area of this technology, the biofiltration of higher pollutant loading rates has to be investigated. This article focuses on the biodegradation of isobutanal (IBAL) in a compost biofilter (BF) at mass loading rates between 211 and 4123 g/m3/day (30– 590 ppmv). At mass loading rates up to 785 g/m3/day, near 100% removal efficiencies could be obtained. However, after increasing the loading rate to 1500–1900 g/m3/day, the degradation efficiency decreased to 62–98%. In addition, a pH decrease and production of isobutanol (IBOL) and isobutyric acid (IBAC) were observed. This is the first report showing that an aldehyde can act as electron donor as well as acceptor in a BF. To study the effects of pH, compost moisture content, and electron acceptor availability on the biofiltration of IBAL, IBOL, and IBAC, additional batch and continuous experiments were performed. A pH of 5.2 reduced the IBAL degradation rate and inhibited the IBOL degradation, although adaptation of the microorganisms to low pH was observed in the BFs. IBAC was not degraded in the batch experiments. High moisture content (51%) initially had no effect on the IBOL production, although it negatively affected the IBAL elimination increasingly during a 21–day time–course experiment. In batch experiments, the reduction of IBAL to IBOL did not decrease when the amount of available electron acceptors (oxygen or nitrate) was increased. The IBAL removal efficiency at higher loading rates was limited by a combination of nutrient limitation, pH decrease, and dehydration, and the importance of each limiting factor depended on the influent concentration. 相似文献

One of the more common and useful methods of testing for SO2 in the atmosphere is to use the Huey sulfation plate.1 It has a layer of PbÕ2 particles suspended in an inert substrate which reacts with ambient SO2 gas to form PbSÛ4. The amount of PbSÛ4 can be determined by gravimetric, spec-trophotometric, or turbidimetric methods. The amount of atmospheric SO2 is estimated by assuming a linear correlation between it and measured PbS04 on the plate. 相似文献
