The properties of condensed polydisperse sulfuric acid aerosols in industrial flue gas were calculated. The condensed aqueous acid volume concentration, composition, droplet size distributions and condensed plume opacity were calculated for typical flue gas compositions, condensation nucleus size distributions and flue gas dilution ratios. The assumed initial flue gas at 170°C contained 0.035 g/acm fly ash particles, 1-20% water vapor, and 1-50 ppmv sulfuric acid vapor. The assumed gas cooling mechanism was by adiabatlc dilution with cool ambient air. Polydisperse droplet growth was calculated by assuming equal surface area increase for each particle. The calculations show that sulfuric acid condensation should have minimal effect on particles larger than 1 μm, but will form a high concentration of particles in the narrow size range of 0.05-0.5 μm diameter. Depending on the initial sulfuric acid and water vapor concentrations in the hot flue gas, the calculated maximum plume opacity following gas dilution ranged from 5% to 25%, compared to 4% for the dry condensation nucleus aerosol.  相似文献

The technique presented in this paper can be used to detect and measure concentration and size spectra of sulfuric acid droplets to within a very good accuracy. Light extinction measurement through reaction spots is employed to yield the size distribution of sulfuric acid droplets when sampled on a thin metal, film. By photometry through optical microscope or densitometry on electron micrographs from exposed thin metal films, one can calculate the size distribution and concentration of urban particulate sulfuric acid with error less than 12%. Using this technique, the size spectra of acid droplets can be measured accurately regardless of their contact angle or spread on flat surface when sampled. The technique can be used for a very easy estimation of acid concentration when used in places where acid concentration is at a very high level such as acid plants.  相似文献

A method is described for dynamic calibration of an acid aerosol analyzer based on a commercial modification of the Thomas Autometer and manufactured by the Instrument Development Company. This automated instrument removes acid aerosol from an air stream by sonic impaction, and the sulfuric acid collected is determined conductometrically. An all-glass aerosol generator based on the reaction of water vapor with sulfur trioxide vapor released from fuming sulfuric acid was built for the calibration. Air samples were withdrawn for instrument calibration before and after the concentration of the acid aerosol was determined by titration. The apparent particle size as determined by an Andersen sampler ranged from 2.0 microns to less than 0.68 micron and exhibited a sharp peak with mass median diameter at 1.3 microns in the distribution curve. The size of the aerosol, within certain limits, could be controlled by humidity. Data indicated a linear response with an aerosol collection efficiency of 80 percent in the important respirable size range.  相似文献

Many nonferrous metals are produced from sulfur-bearing minerals. When pyrometallurgical processes are used, sulfur dioxide gas is formed as a byproduct. In many cases, a small but significant portion of the SO2 is oxidized further to SO3 within the pyrometallurgical reactor system. Upon cooling of the gases, as would occur when such gases contact the atmosphere, SO3 will absorb moisture and condense as a sulfuric acid aerosol, typically referred to as acid mist.  相似文献

Emissions of sulfur trioxide from coal-fired power plants   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Emissions of sulfur trioxide (SO3) are a key component of plume opacity and acid deposition. Consequently, these emissions need to be low enough to not cause opacity violations and acid deposition. Generally, a small fraction of sulfur (S) in coal is converted to SO3 in coal-fired combustion devices such as electric utility boilers. The emissions of SO3 from such a boiler depend on coal S content, combustion conditions, flue gas characteristics, and air pollution devices being used. It is well known that the catalyst used in the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology for nitrogen oxides control oxidizes a small fraction of sulfur dioxide in the flue gas to SO3. The extent of this oxidation depends on the catalyst formulation and SCR operating conditions. Gas-phase SO3 and sulfuric acid, on being quenched in plant equipment (e.g., air preheater and wet scrubber), result in fine acidic mist, which can cause increased plume opacity and undesirable emissions. Recently, such effects have been observed at plants firing high-S coal and equipped with SCR systems and wet scrubbers. This paper investigates the factors that affect acidic mist production in coal-fired electric utility boilers and discusses approaches for mitigating emission of this mist.  相似文献

An examination of the available toxicological literature indicates that sulfur dioxide itself would be properly classified as a mild respiratory irritant, the main portion of which is absorbed in the upper respiratory tract. The reported industrial experience of symptoms of mild chronic respiratory irritation from exposures at or above 5 ppm is compatible with what would have been predicted on the basis of available toxicological data. The basic physiological response to inhalation of pure SO2 appears to be a mild degree of bronchoconstriction reflected in a measurable increase in flow resistance. Although the response is highly variable, most individuals tested have responded to 5 ppm and levels of 5 to 10 ppm have upon occasion produced severe bronchospasm in sensitive individuals. This serves to point up the fact that experience with the industrial Threshold Limit Value (5 ppm) is not applicable as a guide for the general population. Although the majority of individuals tested have shown no detectable response to levels of 1 ppm, there are again sensitive individuals who have responded. It is not known whether these individuals would have responded to concentrations lower than this. The response of these more sensitive individuals to 1 ppm would be classified as detectable response, not as severe bronchospasm. An examination of the available toxicological literature also indicates that sulfuric acid and irritant sulfates, to the extent that the latter have been examined, are more potent irritants than sulfur dioxide. This has been demonstrated in studies using morality and lung pathology as criteria as well as in studies using alterations in pulmonary function in experimental animals and human subjects. The irritant potency of these substances is affected by particle size and by relative humidity, which factors are probably interrelated. It is unfortunate that these substances have not been as yet studied in as great detail as has the less irritant sulfur dioxide. There is evidence which cannot be ignored, even though it is based entirely on animal experiments of one investigator, indicating that the presence of particulate material capable of oxidizing sulfur dioxide to sulfuric acid caused a three to fourfold potentiation of the irritant response. The aerosols causing this potentiation were soluble salts of ferrous iron, manganese and vanadium all of which would become droplets upon inhalation. Insoluble aerosols such as carbon, iron oxide fume, triphenylphosphate or fly ash did not cause a potentiation of the irritant action of SO2 even when used at higher concentrations. The concentrations of SO2 used in these various experiments were in some cases as low as 0.16 ppm. The catalytic aerosols were used at concentrations of 0.7 to 1 mg/m3 which is above any reported levels of these metals in urban air. If the SO2 present as an air pollutant remained unaltered until removed by dilution, there would be no evidence in the toxicological literature suggesting that it would be likely to have any effects on man at prevailing levels. Studies of atmospheric chemistry have shown that SO2 does not remain unaltered in the atmosphere, especially under onditions of high humidity and in the presence of particulate material, but is converted to H2SO4. Such a conversion increases its irritant potency. On this basis the toxicological literature combined with the literature of atmospheric chemistry suggest that sulfur dioxide levels be controlled in terms of the potential formation of irritant particles. This means that control measures as far as feasible should be aimed at both SO2 and particulate material and not against either alone.  相似文献

Fifty years ago electrostatic precipitation, which had been used successfully for collection of sulfuric acid mist, was first applied to a power plant installation for control of fly ash from pulverized fuel. This is the history of the design and application of the principle as the power generation industry adapted to changing environmental problems and concerns.  相似文献

Plants were examined at three different locations in the eastern part of the United States to determine whether damage from air pollution had occurred. This paper discusses sulfur dioxide damage in the metropolitan New York City area; hydrogen fluoride damage near a glass fiber manufacturing plant in the midwest; and hydrochloric acid mist and chlorine damage from a manufacturing operation in an eastern state. The symptoms that developed in vegetation were often found to be similar. Chemical and microscopical analyses were helpful in diagnosing the toxicants.  相似文献

We propose a source of aerosols in the lower atmosphere associated with the creation, growth, and recombination of ubiquitous cosmogenically generated ions. This particle source should be favorable in the relatively clean, stable marine boundary layer, providing a uniform, continuous fine particle generator in the presence of dimethylsulfide emissions. Through this mechanism, new sulfate aerosols can be formed at sulfuric acid vapor partial pressures well below the supersaturations required for homogeneous binary nucleation of sulfuric acid/water solutions, which is consistent with numerous observations of new particle formation under sub-saturated conditions. The evolving aerosols in turn control the acid vapor concentration and thus modulate the sizes of the precursor ions and the rate of new particle formation. A simple model representing this nonlinear coupled system predicts that the physical and chemical processes connecting ions, vapors, and aerosols effectively constrain the particle population to a relatively narrow range of values. This self-limiting behavior may explain in part the apparent stability of the marine sulfate aerosol, with mean concentrations of the order of several hundred per cubic centimeter.  相似文献

Abstract

This investigation studied the effects of injecting dry hydrated lime into flue gas to reduce sulfur trioxide, (SO3) concentrations and consequently stack opacity at the University of Missouri-Columbia power plant. The opacity was due to sulf uric acid mist forming at the stack from high SO3 concentrations. As a result of light scattering by the mist, a visible plume leaves the stack. Therefore, reducing high concentrations of SO3 reduces the sulfuric acid mist and consequently the opacity. To reduce SO3 concentrations, dry hydrated lime is periodically injected into the flue gas upstream of a baghouse and downstream of an induced draft fan. The hydrated lime is transported downstream by the flue gas and deposited on the filter bags in the baghouse forming a filter cake. The reaction between the SO3 and the hydrated lime takes place on the filter bags. The hydrated lime injection system has resulted in at least 95% reduction in the SO3 concentration and has reduced the opacity to acceptable limits. Low capital equipment requirements, low operating cost, and increased bag life make the system very attractive to industries with similar problems.  相似文献

Young asthmatic adult volunteers (N = 27) were exposed in an environmental chamber to sulfuric acid aerosol at concentrations near 0, 122, 242, and 410 μg/m3, in purified background air at 22° C and 50 percent relative humidity. The polydisperse aerosol had a mass median aerodynamic diameter near 0.6 μm. Exposures occurred in random order at one-week intervals. Each lasted 1 h, during which subjects exercised (mean ventilation 42 L/min) and rested during alternate 10-min periods. Specific airway resistance and forced expiratory function were measured pre-exposure, after the initial exercise, and at end-exposure. Bronchial reactivity was determined by challenge with cold air immediately post-exposure. Symptoms were monitored during exposure for one week afterward. Exercise-induced bronchospasm was observed under all conditions. Physiologic and symptom changes possibly attributable to sulfuric acid exposure were small and not statistically significant. Our largely negative results contrast with positive findings elsewhere at lower acid doses. Possible explanations include different clinical characteristics of subjects and different routes of breathing.  相似文献

Waste sulfuric acid is a byproduct generated from numerous industrial chemical processes. It is essential to remove the impurities and recover the sulfuric acid from the waste acid. In this study the rectification method was introduced to recover high purity sulfuric acid from the waste acid generated in toluene nitration process by using rectification column. The waste acid quality before and after rectification were evaluated using UV–Vis spectroscopy, GC/MS, HPLC and other physical and chemical analysis. It was shown that five nitro aromatic compounds in the waste acid were substantially removed and high purity sulfuric acid was also recovered in the rectification process at the same time. The COD was removed by 94% and the chrominance was reduced from 1000° to 1°. The recovered sulfuric acid with the concentration reaching 98.2 wt% had a comparable quality with commercial sulfuric acid and could be recycled back into the toluene nitration process, which could avoid waste of resources and reduce the environmental impact and pollution.  相似文献

Phenols are widely present in the atmosphere and nitration probably in the aerosol phase leads to nitrophenols. Nitration by nitric acid in sulfuric acid can be rapid, but little is known of the process under atmospheric conditions. The Henry's law constants K(H)(dagger) of phenol and 2-, 3- and 4-nitrophenol were all measured by a bubble stripping method as: 2820mol kg(-1) atm(-1) (at 298K), 147mol kg(-1) atm(-1) (at 298K), 1.6x10(4)mol kg(-1)atm(-1) (at 308K) and 2.1x10(4)mol kg(-1) atm(-1) (at 308K), respectively. The Henry's law constant of phenol in sulfuric acid systems is lower by more than a factor of two at 1020mol kg(-1) atm(-1) (at 298K) in 40wt% sulfuric acid, which is in line with salting-out of oxygen-containing aromatic compounds in water-sulfuric acid systems. The Henry's law constants of 2- and 4-nitrophenol behave differently and are almost independent of sulfuric acid concentration. The variation of K(H)(dagger) with temperature (T) described in terms of -dln(K(H)(dagger))/d(1/T) does not to vary with sulfuric acid concentration, suggesting enthalpy of dissolution for phenol is independent of sulfuric acid. The series of Henry's law constants measured here can describe the equilibrium situation for phenols in careful determinations of phase partitioning in the atmosphere.  相似文献

Two techniques were used to measure primary sulfuric acid and sulfate emissions from two small package boilers burning nominal 0.3% sulfur fuels, one with 11 ppm vanadium and one with 4.3 ppm vanadium. Several of the particulate fractions from both sampling methods were analyzed for sulfuric acid using a selective solvent determination (SSD) procedure. The sulfuric acid present on the filters accounted for a minimum of 11% of the particulate emission rates. The observed conversion of sulfur dioxide to primary sulfate or primary sulfuric acid is reduced considerably when sulfate ion detected in an isopropanol impinger is attributed to sulfur dioxide conversion in the solution rather than to primary sulfuric acid. An additional reduction occurs when the method of calculating the conversion is based solely on sulfur weight. This study gives a fourfold reduction in percent conversion when compared to a similar study conducted earlier. Suggestions are offered for improvements in measurement methods and for a consistent technique for calculating sulfur conversion.  相似文献

As part of the joint 14-month exposure experiment on Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) sensitivity to pollution (two levels of ozone plus acid mist) of growth and development of the fine-root system and of mycorrhizae, have been investigated in two forest soils from areas showing forest decline. This study shows that differences in fine-root biomass and the occurrence of species of ectomycorrhizae were mainly due to prevailing conditions within the acid or calcareous substrate. The pollution treatment resulted in higher numbers of short root tips in only one soil, whereas the percentage of ectomycorrhizal roots with a well-developed mantle was low (10-23%) in both soils, irrespective of exposure of trees to ozone and acid mist. There was no consistent response, with the two clones examined, in terms of mycorrhizal frequency, beaded short roots and renewed growth. Regarding the effects on root growth, data cannot be used unrestrictedly for extrapolation to a more complex field situation.  相似文献

Seedlings of Jeffrey pine (Pinus jeffreyi) and giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron gigantea) were more susceptible to leaf chemical changes following exposure to acid mist (pH 3.4-2.0) or acid mist/ozone combinations, than to ozone alone (0.1-0.2 microl/litre), when plants were exposed to alternating doses of these pollutants for 6-9 weeks. Under acid mist treatment, leaves exhibited higher levels of nitrogen and sulfur, two elements applied in acid mist. In addition, levels of foliar sodium, and, in the case of giant sequia, potassium, as well, increased under acid mist treatment. Iron and manganese were also mobilized, resulting in significant increases in these elements in pine, and decreases in manganese in giant sequoia foliage. The acid treatment also reduced chlorophyll b concentrations in pine, and, to a less significant extent, in giant sequoia. Calcium, magnesium, barium and strontium were differentially accumulated in giant sequoia compared to Jeffrey pine. Under acid mist treatment, all of these elements (except strontium) declined in concentration in giant sequoia, with calcium showing the most significant trend. The more extensive changes in leaf chemistry induced by acid mist are consistent with earlier observations of significant changes in spectral reflectance of these seedlings after 3 weeks of fumigation. Limited foliage samples collected from these two species in 1985 and 1986 in Sequoia/Kings Canyon National Parks in the southern Sierra Nevada do not in themselves indicate any clearcut or severe effects of ozone alone on leaf chemistry of these species, but a mild influence of nitrate-laden acid deposition, possibly in combination with ozone, is consistent with the rise in nitrogen and lignin levels in Jeffrey pine on sites observed to have moderate visible injury symptoms. No firm conclusions about effects of pollutants on leaf chemistry in these field sites is possible without further study.  相似文献

The anaerobic activities in swine slurry storage and treatment generate biogas containing gaseous ammonia component which is a chemical agent that can cause adverse environmental impacts when released to the atmosphere. The aim of this pilot plant study was to remove ammonia from biogas generated in a covered lagoon, using a sulfuric acid wet scrubber. The data showed that, on average, the biogas contained 43.7 ppm of ammonia and its concentration was found to be exponentially related to the air temperature inside the lagoon. When the air temperature rose to 35°C and the biogas ammonia concentration reached 90 ppm, the mass transfer of ammonia/ammonium from the deeper liquid body to the interface between the air and liquid became a limiting factor. The biogas velocity was critical in affecting ammonia removal efficiency of the wet scrubber. A biogas flow velocity of 8 to 12 mm s?1 was recommended to achieve a removal efficiency of greater than 60%. Stepwise regression revealed that the biogas velocity and air temperature, not the inlet ammonia concentration in biogas, affected the ammonia removal efficiency. Overall, when 73 g L?1 (or 0.75 M) sulfuric acid solution was used as the scrubber solution, removal efficiencies varied from 0% to 100% with an average of 55% over a 40‐d measurement period. Mass balance calculation based on ammonium–nitrogen concentration in final scrubber liquid showed that about 21.3 g of ammonia was collected from a total volume of 1169 m3 of biogas, while the scrubber solution should still maintain its ammonia absorbing ability until its concentration reaches up to 1 M. These results showed promising use of sulfuric acid wet scrubber for ammonia removal in the digester biogas.  相似文献

Electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy (EM/EDS) can be used to determine the elemental composition of individual particles. However, the accuracy with which atmospheric particle compositions can be quantitatively determined is not well understood. In this work we explore sources of sampling and analytical bias and methods of reducing bias. Sulfuric acid [H2SO4] and ammonium sulfate [(NH4)2SO4] particles were collected on beryllium, silicon, and carbon substrates with similar deposition densities. While [(NH4)2SO4] particles were observed on all substrates, [H2SO4] and ammonia-treated [H2SO4] particles could not be found on beryllium substrates. Interactions between the substrate and sulfuric acid particles are implicated. When measured with EM/EDS, [H2SO4] particles exposed to ammonia overnight were found having lower beam damage rates (0.000 ± 0.002 fraction s−1) than those without any treatment (0.023 ± 0.006 fraction s−1) For laboratory-generated [C10H6(SO3Na)2] particles, the composition determined using the experimental k-factors evaluated from independent particle standards of similar composition and size shows an error less than 20% for all constituents, while greater than 78% errors were found when k-factors were calculated from the theory. This study suggests (1) that sulfate beam damage can be reduced by exposure of atmospheric particle samples to ammonia before analysis, (2) that beryllium is not a suitable substrate for atmospheric particle analysis, and (3) calibration (k-factor determination) using particle standards of similar size and composition to particles present in the atmosphere shows promise as a way of improving the accuracy of quantitative EM analysis.  相似文献
