The expansion of urbanization introduces air pollution to wildlife areas. Some metal contaminants occurring in concentrations too small to have any measurable impact on adult birds may seriously affect embryos that are more sensitive to contaminants than the adult. Chromium, manganese, and lead are toxic and can be passed from the hen to the egg. This study relates the concentrations of these metals in eggs to their concentrations in air in three cities. Rock dove eggs were sampled and air pollution records were examined in the California cities of Riverside, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. The eggs from San Francisco did not differ from those of Los Angeles in lead concentration but the air did differ. The eggs collected in Los Angeles in 1998 had concentrations of chromium greater than in those from Riverside and from Los Angeles 1999 but the air had concentrations of chromium that did not differ among those three collections. Concentrations of manganese did not differ among the eggs but did differ among the air samples of the three cities. Exposures of embryos to chromium and manganese in this study were not at levels warranting concern. Although the concentration at which lead in eggs impairs avian health is not established, the highest concentrations found in this study exceed estimated safe concentrations. There is no indication that embryo exposure is directly related to atmospheric levels of these metals in the cities of this study.  相似文献

Pollution from jet aircraft is not a problem confined only to Los Angeles County but one which is of interest and concern wherever a major airport exists. Jet traffic at Los Angeles International Airport has increased from 80 flights daily in 1959 to nearly 1000 a day. This number will more than double in the next decade and its air pollution potential will increase in about the same proportion. The Air Pollution Control District investigated this new source of air pollution in Los Angeles County in 1959. In the absence of any previous research evidence or other information which would allow an evaluation of contaminant emissions from jet aircraft engines, it was necessary to develop original and novel test methods. These tests provided a starting point for a new study in 1968, to update the initial investigations and expand on them to include testing of emissions from a new generation of turbofan, as well as late model turbojet and turboprop engines. The primary interest of this study was to obtain as complete and comprehensive information as possible on the kinds and quantities of air contaminants emitted by jet aircraft, particularly at the Los Angeles International Airport. Equally important were the investigations on possible approaches to control of jet aircraft pollution, as well as the decisions as to the scope of the District’s legal jurisdiction in the field of aviation.  相似文献

Generalized additive models were used to analyze the time series of daily hospital admissions for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases over the period of 1987-1995 in three major metropolitan areas--Cook County, IL; Los Angeles County, CA; and Maricopa County, AZ--in the United States. In Cook and Maricopa Counties, admissions information was only available for the elderly (ages 65 and over), while in Los Angeles County, admissions information was available for all ages. In Cook County, daily monitoring information was available on PM10, CO, SO2, NO2, and O3. In Los Angeles and Maricopa Counties, monitoring information was available daily on the gases, and information on PM10 was available every sixth day. In Los Angeles County, information on PM2.5 was also available every sixth day. In Cook and Los Angeles Counties, associations were found between each pollutant, with the exception of O3, and admissions for cardiovascular disease, with the gases showing the strongest associations. In two-pollutant models with PM and one of the gases, the effect of the gases remained stable, while the effect of PM became unstable and insignificant. In Maricopa County, the gases, with the exception of O3, were weakly associated with hospital admissions for cardiovascular disease, while PM was not. In two-pollutant models with two of CO, SO2, and NO2, the pattern of results is heterogeneous in the three counties. In all three counties, only weak evidence of any association between air pollution and cerebrovascular admissions was found.  相似文献

Volatile organic compound levels (VOCs) in breath, personal air, fixed outdoor air and drinking water samples were measured and compared for a probability sample of individuals in Los Angeles and Antioch/Pittsburg, California during 1984. In addition, comparisons were made between seasons (winter vs spring) in Los Angeles for individuals sampled in both seasons. The statistics presented to compare the sites and seasons were primarily percent measurable and concentration levels (e.g. sample medians). For most comparisons, 13 VOC levels were examined for breath, personal and outdoor air samples and four VOCs for water samples. In addition to the results for VOC levels, the paper also briefly describes
  • 1.(i) the sampling procedures used to obtain the study participants
  • 2.(ii) the collection of air, breath and water samples
  • 3.(iii) selected results from the quality assurance procedures used in this study.
For most chemicals, the percent measurable and concentration levels were
  • 1.(i) higher in personal air samples than in breath or outdoor air samples,
  • 2.(ii) higher in Los Angeles in the winter for air and breath than in the, spring,
  • 3.(iii) higher in Los Angeles for air and breath than in Antioch/Pittsburg,
  • 4.(iv) quite different for water as compared with air and breath.
Ubiquitous compounds in water were chloroform, bromodichloromethane, dibromochloromethane and bromoform while in air and breath they were 1,1,1-trichloroethane, benzene, tetrachloroethylene, ethylbenzene and the xylenes.Concentrations were higher in
  • 1.(i) outdoor air vs breath in the winter in Los Angeles (where outdoor air levels were much higher than in the spring),
  • 2.(ii) in personal air vs outdoor air in the upper tails of the concentration distribution (90th percentile) compared to the 50th percentile. For the water samples, relatively high concentrations were noted for chloroform, bromodichloromethane and dibromochloromethane.
In most cases, water concentrations were higher for Los Angeles in the spring. Five VOCs known to be in tobacco smoke (benzene, styrene, ethylbenzene and the xylenes) had significantly higher levels in the breath of smokers.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies that assess the health effects of long-term exposure to ambient air pollution are used to inform public policy. These studies rely on exposure models that use data collected from pollution monitoring sites to predict exposures at subject locations. Land use regression (LUR) and universal kriging (UK) have been suggested as potential prediction methods. We evaluate these approaches on a dataset including measurements from three seasons in Los Angeles, CA. METHODS: The measurements of gaseous oxides of nitrogen (NOx) used in this study are from a "snapshot" sampling campaign that is part of the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis and Air Pollution (MESA Air). The measurements in Los Angeles were collected during three two-week periods in the summer, autumn, and winter, each with about 150 sites. The design included clusters of monitors on either side of busy roads to capture near-field gradients of traffic-related pollution. LUR and UK prediction models were created using geographic information system (GIS)-based covariates. Selection of covariates was based on 10-fold cross-validated (CV) R(2) and root mean square error (RMSE). Since UK requires specialized software, a computationally simpler two-step procedure was also employed to approximate fitting the UK model using readily available regression and GIS software. RESULTS: UK models consistently performed as well as or better than the analogous LUR models. The best CV R(2) values for season-specific UK models predicting log(NOx) were 0.75, 0.72, and 0.74 (CV RMSE 0.20, 0.17, and 0.15) for summer, autumn, and winter, respectively. The best CV R(2) values for season-specific LUR models predicting log(NOx) were 0.74, 0.60, and 0.67 (CV RMSE 0.20, 0.20, and 0.17). The two-stage approximation to UK also performed better than LUR and nearly as well as the full UK model with CV R(2) values 0.75, 0.70, and 0.70 (CV RMSE 0.20, 0.17, and 0.17) for summer, autumn, and winter, respectively. CONCLUSION: High quality LUR and UK prediction models for NOx in Los Angeles were developed for the three seasons based on data collected for MESA Air. In our study, UK consistently outperformed LUR. Similarly, the 2-step approach was more effective than the LUR models, with performance equal to or slightly worse than UK.  相似文献

Analysis of vertical temperature soundings at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) shows that a conservative height of the inversion base for pollutant containment purposes is 490 ft (150 m). This altitude is considerably less than the 3000 ft (914 m) pollution containment altitude assumed by the EPA in preparing their emission inventory for the airport. (Figure 1.) After correcting the EPA emission inventory to reflect a real world inversion height, the emission inventory for aircraft at Los Angeles International Airport is estimated to be approximately 50% less. Aircraft thus become a less significant pollution source and consideration should be given to relaxing engine emission control requirements accordingly.

This paper examines current emission control philosophy, which according to the EPA should be based upon the significance of the particular polluting source. The problem of accounting for above ground aircraft emissions is then considered. Daily inversion height data are then used to determine a realistic vertical containment altitude for aircraft emissions. Problems in obtaining good inversion data are described. Finally, aircraft emissions at Los Angeles International Airport are adjusted to reflect real world inversion conditions on those days when the inversion height is low enough to influence significantly air pollution levels. Recommendations are made for additional research leading to possible change to NOx emission control requirements for aircraft.  相似文献

The body of information presented in this paper is directed to those individuals concerned with the effect of urban pollution on downwind areas. In the absence of any evidence, it has been widely assumed that increasing NO x emissions have caused oxidant levels to increase downwind of Los Angeles, i.e., Riverside and San Bernardino. This smog chamber study simulated pollutant transport from Los Angeles to the downwind areas by irradiating a typical Los Angeles hydrocarbon/NO x mixture for extended periods of time. The smog chamber experiments were extended to 22 hours to obtain an integrated light intensity equal to that which occurs in the Los Angeles area. The effects of variations of nitrogen oxide emissions on an aged air mass were examined. The results show that downwind oxidant levels are only slightly affected by large changes in NO x emissions. However, it is clear that reduced nitrogen oxide emissions will lead to an increase in oxidant in downtown Los Angeles.  相似文献

Generalized additive models were used to analyze the time series of daily hospital admissions for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases over the period of 19871995 in three major metropolitan areas—Cook County, IL; Los Angeles County, CA; and Maricopa County, AZ— in the United States. In Los Angeles and Maricopa Counties, monitoring information was available daily on the gases, and information on PM10 was available every sixth day. In Los Angeles County, information on PM25 was also available every sixth day. In Cook and Los Angeles Counties, associations were found between each pollutant, with the exception of O3, and admissions for cardiovascular disease, with the gases showing the strongest associations. The forests surrounding the urban areas of the Los Angeles basin are impacted by ozone and nitrogen pollutants arising from urban areas. We examined changes in the herbivore communities of three prominent plant species (ponderosa pine, California black oak and bracken fern) at six sites along an air pollution gradient. Insects were extracted from foliage samples collected in spring, as foliage reached full expansion. Community differences were evaluated using total herbivore abundance, richness, Shannon-Weiner diversity, and discriminant function analysis. Even without conspicuous changes in total numbers, diversity or richness of herbivores, herbivore groups showed patterns of change that followed the air pollution gradient that were apparent through discriminant function analysis. For bracken fern and oak, chewing insects were more dominant at high pollution sites. Oak herbivore communities showed the strongest effect. These changes in herbivore communities may affect nutrient cycling in forest systems.  相似文献

A joint project of government and industry people who studied the possible effect upon air pollution in Los Angeles of variations in the composition of gasoline sold in Los Angeles is discussed.

No experimental automotive test work was undertaken in this project. However, prototype fuel blends were made and analyzed in order to simulate the effects certain changes would have upon photochemical smog formation.

It is apparent from the results of this study that the potential of reducing smog in Los ngeles by fuel modifications is quite small, even in the year of maximum effect. This potential decreases to a negligible level due to the effectiveness of mechanical control of evaporative losses required in California starting with the 1970 model cars.  相似文献

The bacterial mutagenicity of ambient particulate organic matter (POM) was measured for consecutive 3-hour time intervals over a 27-hour period in March 1983 at two sites on opposite sides of the heavily traveled San Diego Freeway (I-405) in West Los Angeles (WLA), California, the diurnal variations in the direct (not requiring S9 metabolic activation) mutagenic burden of airborne particulates and the magnitude of the mutagen doses observed at these sites were similar to those previously observed at a site just east of downtown Los Angeles (ELA). Highs (~150 rev m?3) and lows (~35 rev m?3) in mutagen densities occurred over short time intervals (a few hours) probably due to changes in emissions, mixing heights and wind speeds. Offshore air flows which drained the air basin between midnight and 0600 PST resulted in elevated mutagen density levels at the western edge of the Los Angeles Basjn. The incremental burden of direct mutagens in respirable POM attributable to freeway traffic reached 50 rev m?3 during this study. Consistent with our results for ELA there was diminished response on the Salmonella typhimurium nitroreductase-deficient strain TA98NR vs. TA98 suggesting that nitroarenes contribute significantly to the direct mutagenicity of POM collected at the WLA sites.  相似文献

A research project has been under way to investigate air pollution problems in Los Angeles County with the help of the data supplied by the Los Angeles County Air Pollution Control District. These data consist of measurements of primary pollutants such as nitric oxide, hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide and particu-lates, and secondary pollutants such as ozone and nitrogen dioxide, recorded hourly at a number of different stations in Los Angeles County over the past seventeen years. This present discussion deals in a preliminary way with a particular aspect of this analysis, namely, the occurrence of photochemical smog in Los Angeles. The paper is divided into two main sections. The first is intended to provide a brief survey of the problem of photochemical smog in Los Angeles as presently understood in relation to the available field data and also in relation to chamber experiments which have been run in various laboratories. The second part of the paper discusses a class of intervention problems that arise in studying the data. It is noted that parallel problems occur in the study of other ecological material and elsewhere. Statistical methods for dealing with this class of problems are illustrated with some of the Los Angeles data.  相似文献

Lead concentrations in air were measured at 12 sites in Detroit, New York and Los Angeles as part of a program to relate automobile emissions and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons in air. The information on lead is reported separately because of the current interest in lead as an air pollutant. Sampling was conducted by means of a large “absolute” filter and equipment contained in a step-van truck. A portion of the filter was macerated in nitric acid and the lead determined spectrographically. The combined annual average lead concentration for four sites in metropolitan Los Angeles was approximately 40% higher than the combined averages of either the five sites in metropolitan New York or the three sites in metropolitan Detroit. Concentrations ranged from 0.4 ug/M3 at Santa Monica, to 18.4 ug/M3 at a Los Angeles Freeway Interchange. Concentrations were generally highest in freeway areas, intermediate in commercial areas, and lowest in residential areas. They were about 40% higher in daytime than at night. Average lead concentrations were highest during autumn in New York and winter in Los Angeles reflecting an inverse relationship with wind speed. Correlation coefficients between lead and carbon monoxide, at all sites, were statistically non-zero with 99% confidence and varied from 0.75 to 0.96. Lead concentrations in this study were higher than concentrations reported by others for Detroit, New York, and Los Angeles, presumably because sampling in this study was closer to traffic. However, concentrations in this study were lower than in-traffic concentrations given in the literature.  相似文献

To assess the impact of past, current and proposed air quality regulations on coarse particulate matter (CPM), the concentrations of CPM mass and its chemical constituents were examined in the Los Angeles Basin from 1986 to 2009 using PM data acquired from peer-reviewed journals and regulatory agency database. PM10 mass levels decreased by approximately half from 1988 to 2009 at the three sampling sites examined- located in downtown Los Angeles, Long Beach and Riverside. Annual CPM mass concentrations were calculated from the difference between daily PM10 and PM2.5 from 1999 to 2009. High CPM episodes driven by high wind speed/stagnant condition caused year-to-year fluctuations in the 99th/98th percentile CPM levels. The reductions of average CPM levels were lower than those of PM10 in the same period, therefore the decrease of PM10 level was mainly driven by reductions in the emission levels of PM2.5 (or fine) particles, as demonstrated by the higher annual reduction of average PM2.5 (0.92 microg/m3) compared with CPM (0.39 microg/m3) from 1999 to 2009 in downtown Los Angeles despite their comparable concentrations. This is further confirmed by the significant decrease of Ni, Cr, V and EC in the coarse fraction after 1995. On the other hand, the levels of several inorganic ions (sulfate, chloride and to a lesser extent nitrate) remained comparable. From 1995 to 2008, levels of Cu, a tracer of brake wear, either remained similar or decreased at a smaller rate compared with elements of combustion origins. This differential reduction of CPM components suggests that past and current regulations may have been more effective in reducing fugitive dust (Al, Fe and Si) and combustion emissions (Ni, Cr, V, and EC) rather than CPM from vehicular abrasion (Cu) and inorganic ions (NO3(-), SO4(2-) and Cl(-)) in urban areas. Implications: Limited information is currently available to provide the scientific basis for understanding the sources and physical and chemical variations of CPM, and their relations to air quality regulations and adverse health effects. This study investigates the historical trends of CPM mass and its chemical components in the Los Angeles Basin to advance our understanding on the impact of past and current air quality regulations on the coarse fraction of PM. The results of this study will aid policy makers to design more targeted regulations to control CPM sources to ensure substantial protection of public health from CPM exposure. Supplemental Materials: Supplemental materials are available for this article. Go to the publisher's online edition of the Journal of the Air & Waste Management Association for (1) details of the sampling sites and (2) the daily concentrations of high CPM/PM10 episodes.  相似文献

This paper is directed to those concerned with the effect of changes in lead consumption by motor vehicles on atmospheric lead concentrations. Atmospheric lead concentrations in the Los Angeles area have been found to be dependent on lead consumption, meteorology, and source-receptor relationships. Mathematical relationships between these variables for selected Los Angeles area sites are derived. Los Angeles County experienced a 50% reduction in annual average atmospheric lead concentrations between 1971 and 1976, which was found to be due to a decrease in vehicular emissions of lead. Seasonal variations in lead concentration were found to be mainly a product of seasonal variations in weather. Projections of atmospheric lead concentrations for the next decade show a continued downtrend, based on regulation of fuel lead content and introduction of additional catalyst equipped vehicles. By the mid-1980's most locations in the Los Angeles area are expected to attain the California and federal ambient air quality standards for lead, 1.5 micrograms per cubic meter, based on a monthly average.  相似文献

Ambient air samples from various studies were analyzed for a specific set of trace-level volatile organic compounds by using a gas chromatograph (GC) equipped with a flame ionization detector (FID) in parallel with an electron capture detector (ECD). The samples were then reanalyzed on a second GC system equipped with a mass selective detector (MSD). GC-FID/ECD data were compared to the nominally correct GC-MSD data to determine the accuracy of the nonspecific detectors, which often do not differentiate the targeted compound from Interfering compounds. Qualitative accuracy (capability for correctly identifying compounds on the basis of retention time only) and quantitative accuracy (capability for correctly measuring the concentration of an identified compound on the basis of peak area) were evaluated. Data are presented on a per-compound basis to provide the combined typical results from air samples collected in three geographic regions: Kanawha Valley, WV; Los Angeles, CA, area; and Houston, TX.  相似文献

Continuous measurements of total hydrocarbons (and other organic substances) and of methane were made in Cincinnati and Los Angeles for three-month periods. Some of the measurements were made during episodes of photochemical air pollution. Two instruments, one for measurement of total hydrocarbons and the other for methane, were operated in parallel. Both incorporated flame ionization detectors having greater sensitivity than commercial flame ionization instruments. The flame ionization analysis for methane was made specific by use of an adsorbent carbon column preceding the analyzer to retain all organic substances except methane. Subtracting the methane concentration values from those for total hydrocarbons gave nonmethane hydrocarbon concentrations. The data showed diurnal patterns of concentrations of methane and nonmethane hydrocarbons in the atmosphere. Average hourly values for methane were strikingly similar in Los Angeles and in Cincinnati (2.6 and 2.4 ppm, respectively); those for nonmethane hydrocarbons were four times as high in Los Angeles (3.0 and 0.8 ppm, respectively). A bimodal frequency distribution pattern of the concentrations suggested that atmospheric ventilation was either good or poor, with less than a random amount of time in intermediate stages. The width of the methane frequency distribution peak was about half the width of that for nonmethane hydrocarbons, indicating a different and more constant source for the former.  相似文献

A mobile exposure and air pollution measurement system was developed and used for on-freeway ultrafine particle health effects studies. A nine-passenger van was modified with a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filtration system that can deliver filtered or unfiltered air to an exposure chamber inside the van. State-of-the-art instruments were used to measure concentration and size distribution of fine and ultrafine particles and the concentration of carbon monoxide (CO), black carbon (BC), particle-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), fine particulate matter (PM2.5) mass, and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) inside the exposure chamber. This paper presents the construction and technical details of the van and air pollutant concentrations collected in 32 2-hr runs on two major Los Angeles freeways, Interstate 405 (1-405; mostly gasoline traffic) and Interstate 710 (1-710; large proportion of heavy-duty diesel traffic). More than 97% of particles were removed when the flow through the filter box was switched from bypass mode to filter mode while the vehicle was driving on both freeways. The filtration system thus provides a great particulate matter exposure contrast while keeping gas-phase pollutant concentrations the same. Under bypass mode, average total particle number concentration observed inside the exposure chamber was around 8.4 x 10(4) and 1.3 x 10(5) particles cm(-3) on the I-405 and the I-710 freeways, respectively. Bimodal size distributions were consistent and similar for both freeways with the first mode around 16-20 nm and the second mode around 50-55 nm. BC and particle-bound PAH concentrations were more than two times greater on the I-710 than on the I-405 freeway. Very weak correlations were observed between total particle number concentrations and other vehicular pollutants on the freeways.  相似文献

One of the most annoying aspects of photochemical air pollution, particularly in the Southern California Air Basin, has been eye irritation. The most aggravating combination of driving in heavy traffic in Los Angeles, suffering from tearing and burning of the eyes together with very limited visibility, was a strong motivation for the public to demand that effective control actions be taken.  相似文献
