ABSTRACT The present work outlines the main results of a full-scale study conducted on the utilization of waste tires as auxiliary fuel in cement production. Experimental tests were conducted for determining the influence of shredded tires on combustion conditions, emissions produced, and the characteristics of clinker obtained, for feeding ratios over 35% in terms of total heat input. The addition of tire chips did not lead to any appreciable modification in either the whole process or the quality of clinker produced; gaseous emissions were mostly unaffected, with significant improvements related to the reductions obtained in nitrogen and sulfur oxides concentrations. Experimental findings from tests conducted with tire chips exposed to kiln combustion flue gases compare favorably with the typical burnout times derived from theoretical approaches. These experimental data and calculations to estimate particle trajectories beyond the injection point, through proper theoretical analysis of the kinetic behavior, result in important indications for the shredding operation and for optimum injection modes. 相似文献

Agricultural wastes from orchards, grain fields, and range lands are burned each year in California as the most practical means of ridding the land of these wastes. In order to determine the relative contribution of the burning of such material to photochemical air pollution, the effluent from 1 23 fires of known weights of range brush, both dry and green, barley and rice stubble, and prunings from various fruit and nut trees were monitored in a special tower which provided an open burning situation. Analyses were made for total hydrocarbon, expressed as C, by flame ionization detection, and for 24 individual hydrocarbons by gas chromatography, as well as for CO and CO2 by infrared spectroscopy. A few analyses were made for oxides of nitrogen. These data, coupled with temperature and airflow measurements, allowed calculations to be made on pounds of effluent per ton of material burned and demonstrated that the emissions from agricultural burning are much less than those from the automobile, a principal source of such emissions. 相似文献

Abstract To test the effectiveness of California’s vehicle inspection/ maintenance (I/M) program, exclusive of vehicle-owner intervention, a fleet of more than 1,100 vehicles that previously had failed California’s Smog Check test were sent to randomly selected Smog Check stations in the Los Angeles area for covert inspections and repairs. The two-speed idle test was used for repairs. For those vehicles that were repaired at the first inspection, their FTP emission reductions were 25%, 14%, and 11% for hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO), and nitrogen oxides (NOx), respectively, although emissions testing for NOx was not performed at the Smog Check stations. Idle HC and CO emissions increased for 35% and 43% of the vehicles, respectively, after repairs. This data set shows that most vehicles that fail the Smog Check inspection are only marginal emitters, with 61% and 44% of the total potential for HC and CO emission reductions, respectively, coming from only 10% of the vehicles that currently fail the inspection. When the vehicles were rank-ordered by idle emissions from dirtiest to cleanest, emission reduction costs for the highest-emitting 10% of the fleet averaged $l,100/ton and $250/ton for HC and CO, respectively, attributing all the costs to each pollutant exclusively. An evaluation of the influence and degradation of ground multilayer containers, such as Tetra Brik Aseptic (TBA), in the composting process of municipal solid wastes (MSW) is presented. Two composting piles were formed by mixing, in different proportions, an organic fraction of MSW and TBA material ground as flakes or stripes. Piles were periodically aerated by mechanical mixing. Evolution of the composting was followed by frequent measurements of suitable parameters such as temperature, moisture, ashes, total organic carbon (TOC), nitrogen, C/N ratio, pH, conductivity, nutrients, and heavy metals. As expected, aluminum and polyethylene films from TBA were not degraded during the processes, but the cardboard fraction of TBA showed a partial decomposition that was more intense in the material ground as flakes. After two months of curing, the composts were refined and analyzed to determine their nutrient and heavy-metals contents. Despite their poor aesthetic properties, mainly resulting from the presence of little pieces of plastic and aluminum films, the composts contained the required amounts of nutrients; furthermore, their heavy-metals content was below the limits proposed by some official European organizations. 相似文献

Although energy-intensive industrial processes have the potential to incinerate hazardous wastes while effecting fuel cost savings, increased government regulation and heightened public interest require that the financial aspects of a hazardous waste fuel (HWF) program be considered fully. Apparent fuel savings are offset by the capital requirements for institutional factors such as permitting and public relations. This paper provides cost information for initiating and operating a HWF program, and outlines the steps required to perform a thorough financial analysis. Falling fuel prices lessen the appeal of HWF programs, and unless the facility is paid to accept the HWF, only very large users (more than 80 × 109 Btu/yr) of energy can consider them. The paper includes a figure from which the reader can estimate the return on investment for HWF programs over a range of program sizes (80 × 1200 × 109 Btu/yr). 相似文献

Chemical and biological analyses were performed to characterize products of Incomplete combustion emitted during the simulated open field burning of agricultural plastic. A small utility shed equipped with an air delivery system was used to simulate pile burning and forced-air-curtain incineration of a nonhalogenated agricultural plastic that reportedly consisted of polyethylene and carbon black. Emissions were analyzed for combustion gases; volatile, semi-volatile, and particulate organics; and toxic and mutagenlc properties. Emission samples, as well as samples of the used (possibly pesticide-contaminated) plastic, were analyzed for the presence of several pesticides to which the plastic may have been exposed. Although a variety of alkanes, alkenes, and aromatic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) compounds were identified in the volatile, seml-volatlle, and particulate fractions of these emissions, a substantial fraction of higher molecular weight organic material was not identified. No pesticides were Identified in either combustion emission samples or dlchloromethane washes of the used plastic. When mutagenlcity was evaluated by exposing Salmonella bacteria (Ames assay) to whole vapor and vapor/partlculate emissions, no toxic or mutagenlc effects were observed. However, organic extracts of the particulate samples were moderately mutagenlc. This mutagenlcity compares approximately to that measured from residential wood heating on a revertant per unit heat release basis. Compared to pile burning, forced air slightly decreased the time necessary to burn a charge of plastic. There was not a substantial difference, however, in the variety or concentrations of organic compounds Identified In samples from these two burn conditions. This study highlights the benefits of a combined chemical/biological approach to the characterization of complex, multi-component combustion emissions. These results may not reflect those of other types of plastic that may be used for agricultural purposes, especially those containing halogens. 相似文献

The effect of ammonia in the fuel on NOx emissions was investigated through laboratory experiments and field burner tests. It was found that the degree of conversion of pm-monia to NOx was a strong function of excess air, ammonia content in the fuel, and of the degree of mixing in the flame. In premixed laboratory flames concentrations of NOx above the peak equilibrium amounts were produced. In furnace diffusion flames the conversion to NOx was much less. At substoichiometric air-fuel ratios all the ammonia appears to pyrolize, forming N2, and only very little NOx. Several methods for burning ammonia to produce low NOx emissions were investigated. 相似文献

Abstract Black carbon (BC) was measured every 5 min for two years (May 1998–May 2000) inside and immediately outside a northern Virginia house (suburban Washington, DC) occupied by two nonsmokers. Two aethalometers, which measure BC by optical transmission through a quartz fiber tape, were employed indoors and outdoors. Meteorological parameters were obtained on an hourly basis from nearby Dulles airport. Indoor activities were recorded to identify indoor sources such as combustion activities, which occurred 9% of the time during the first year and 4% of the time during the second year. At times without indoor sources, indoor/outdoor BC ratios averaged 0.53 in the first year and 0.35 in the second year. The main outdoor source of BC was the general regional background, contributing 83–84% of the total during each of the two years. Morning rush hour traffic contributed 8–9% of the total BC. An evening peak in the fall and winter, thought to include contributions from wood burning, was responsible for ~8% of the annual average BC concentration. The main indoor sources of BC were cooking and candle burning, contributing 16 and 31%, respectively, of the annual average indoor concentrations in the two years. Relative humidity (RH) affected the outdoor aethalometer in both years. An artifact associated with the tape advance was noted for the aethalometer, but a correction factor was developed that reduced the associated error by a factor of 2. 相似文献

For many years the City of Detroit was a flagrant violator of its own air pollution laws by the indiscriminate open burning of Dutch Elm diseased trees, brush and trunks. Cited for violation under the city’s air pollution control code as well as under threat of a private legal suit, the City administration approved a $250,000 expenditure for the design and installation of a unique six ton per hour brush and trunk burning incinerator plant. This plant was conceived by engineering personnel of the City Engineer’s office in consultation with engineering staff members of the Air Pollution Control Bureau. Information is provided on the basic plant layout and design, wet fly ash collector configuration, operating and maintenance experience, and recommended changes for any future similar installations. Stack emission test data are also reported. Due to the success of this plant, a similar plant is in the process of being constructed in another part of the city upon completion of which the City of Detroit will no longer be required to burn brush and trunk waste in open fires. The new plant has incorporated some design changes which should enable it to perform even more efficiently than the prototype unit and handle a wider variety of waste such as Christmas trees and wrecking waste. Because this plant is the first of its kind in the U. S. and the disposal of Dutch Elm diseased brush and trunks is a major problem in many urban areas, the experience of the City of Detroit should be of vital interest to many municipal officials. 相似文献

Abstract One of the thermal oxidation technologies recommended by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is destruction of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) in a cement kiln. The destruction of CFC12, CFC11 and CFC113 was studied in a cement kiln plant in actual commercial operation. CFCs were completely destroyed in the kiln under normal operating conditions. Hydrogen fluoride and hydrogen chloride generated by CFC decomposition were absorbed by cement materials. No formation of toxic ha-logenated organic compounds, such as polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins or dibenzofurans (PCDDs/PCDFs), was observed in the CFC incineration. 相似文献

In this paper the authors report on the results of case studies carried out under the sponsorship of the U.S. EPA to determine the effectiveness of four processes designed to reduce the amount of hazardous waste from plating operations. Data reported are based on the results of actual on-site sampling of the processes and encompass effectiveness, environmental, and economic considerations. Two of the case studies evaluating the use of sodium borohydride reduction as a substitute for lime/ferrous sulfate precipitation, found that the technology was a viable substitute in one case and was marginally acceptable in another. Another case study, involving carbon adsorption removal of organic contaminants from plating bath wastes, found that this technology significantly reduced both disposal costs and waste volume. A final case study of electrolytic recovery indicated that while acid copper electroplating rinses are amenable to electrolytic recovery, other metal-bearing rinses, such as those from solder (tin/lead) plating or etching are less appropriate. 相似文献

Paniculate control strategies in the U.S. have historically focused on the reduction of industrial emissions. In recent years, however, area sources such as residential wood combustion have been recognized as significant and rapidly increasing sources of particulate emissions. In some areas of the country it will be necessary to substantially reduce residential wood burning emissions in order to attain or maintain acceptable levels of total and respirable particulate matter. A comprehensive strategy to reduce residential wood burning impacts has been developed for the Medford-Ashland area, 1 a community of about 100,000 population situated in a poorly ventilated valley in Oregon. Portions of this strategy will be applied in other areas of Oregon. The strategy may be applicable to urban communities in other states as well. 相似文献
