In urban atmospheres hydrocarbons promote the conversion of NO to NO2 under the influence of sunlight, ultimately giving rise to photochemical smog. The conversion results from a long chain process with HO radicals as the chain carrier. If this chain could be interrupted by suitable radical traps, the formation of photochemical smog would be inhibited. In this paper we report the results of studies using phenol, benzaldehyde, and aniline as inhibitors. Mixtures containing 16 mTorr C3H6, 8 mTorr NO, ~85 Torr 02, and the addi tives were irradiated at 25°C. The NO2 pressure was monitored photometrically. In the absence of additive, the NO2 pressure first increases with irradiation time reaching a maximum conversion corresponding to 70% of the NO at 1 2 minutes. As the radiation time is lengthened, the NO2 pressure drops. With the additive present, the formation of NO2 is delayed. The time to reach the maximum percent conversion of NO to N02 becomes 20, 22, 31, and 40 minutes respectively, for 13 mTorr C6H5OH, 2 mTorr C6H5CHO, 8 mTorr C6H5CHO, and 4.1 mTorr C6H5NH2 added. The problems and possibilities of adding inhibitors to the atmosphere to control air pollution are discussed.  相似文献

Air pollution has a great impact on the social and economic aspects all over the world. In order to account the human interaction with the atmospheric environment, a suitable scientific basis is needed. That is why six physicochemical quantities have been determined in a previous work for each one heterogeneous system between organic volatile pollutants and oxide-pigments of works of art. This investigation is extended in order to determine experimentally five new ones. Thus, a more precise contribution to the elucidation of the mechanism of the deterioration of various works of art in museums is achieved. These physicochemical quantities are: (1) local adsorption energies, (2) local monolayer capacities, (3) local adsorption isotherms, (4) density probability function, and (5) pollutant concentration on the oxide-pigment at equilibrium. All these adsorption parameters mentioned above have been calculated as a function of experimental time for the systems: C6H6/TiO2, C6H6/NO2/TiO2, C6H6/Cr2O3, C6H6/NO2/Cr2O3, C6H5CH3/TiO2, C6H5CH3/NO2/TiO2, C6H5CH3/Cr2O3, C6H5CH3/NO2/Cr2O3, C6H6/PbO, C6H6/NO2/PbO, C6H5CH3/PbO, and C6H5CH3/NO2/PbO for the first time. Thus, in this work we shall stress the recent new aspect of Reversed Flow-(Inverse) Gas Chromatography (RF-GC or RF-IGC), i.e. the time-resolved chromatography related to the evaluation of some important adsorption parameters. Gas Chromatography is a promising meeting place of surface science and atmospheric chemistry.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Mixing ratios of the criteria air contaminant nitrogen dioxide (NO2) are commonly quantified by reduction to nitric oxide (NO) using a photolytic converter followed by NO-O3 chemiluminescence (CL). In this work, the performance of a photolytic NO2 converter prototype originally designed for continuous emission monitoring and emitting light at 395 nm was evaluated. Mixing ratios of NO2 and NOx (= NO + NO2) entering and exiting the converter were monitored by blue diode laser cavity ring-down spectroscopy (CRDS). The NO2 photolysis frequency was determined by measuring the rate of conversion to NO as a function of converter residence time and found to be 4.2 s?1. A maximum 96% conversion of NO2 to NO over a large dynamic range was achieved at a residence time of (1.5 ± 0.3) s, independent of relative humidity. Interferences from odd nitrogen (NOy) species such as peroxyacyl nitrates (PAN; RC(O)O2NO2), alkyl nitrates (AN; RONO2), nitrous acid (HONO), and nitric acid (HNO3) were evaluated by operating the prototype converter outside its optimum operating range (i.e., at higher pressure and longer residence time) for easier quantification of interferences. Four mechanisms that generate artifacts and interferences were identified as follows: direct photolysis, foremost of HONO at a rate constant of 6% that of NO2; thermal decomposition, primarily of PAN; surface promoted photochemistry; and secondary chemistry in the connecting tubing. These interferences are likely present to a certain degree in all photolytic converters currently in use but are rarely evaluated or reported. Recommendations for improved performance of photolytic converters include operating at lower cell pressure and higher flow rates, thermal management that ideally results in a match of photolysis cell temperature with ambient conditions, and minimization of connecting tubing length. When properly implemented, these interferences can be made negligibly small when measuring NO2 in ambient air.

Implications: A new near-UV photolytic converter for measurement of the criteria pollutant nitrogen dioxide (NO2) in ambient air by CL was characterized. Four mechanisms that generate interferences were identified and investigated experimentally: direct photolysis of HONO which occurred at a rate constant 6% that of NO2, thermal decomposition of PAN and N2O5, surface promoted chemistry involving HNO3, and secondary chemistry involving NO in the tubing connecting the converter and CL analyzer. These interferences are predicted to occur in all NO2 P-CL systems but can be avoided by appropriate thermal management and operating at high flow rates.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

To explore environmentally benign solvents for the absorption of NO and NO2, a series of caprolactam tetrabutyl ammonium halide ionic liquids were synthesized. The solubility of NO and NO2 was measured at temperatures ranging from 298.2 to 363.2 K and atmospheric pressure, and the following trend in the solubility of NO and NO2 in ionic liquids with various halide anions was observed, respectively: F > Br > Cl and Br > Cl > F. Moreover, as the temperature increased from 308.15 to 363.15 K and the mole ratio of caprolactam increased from 2:1 to 6:1, the solubility of NO increased. Alternatively, the solubility of NO2 decreased as the temperature increased from 298.15 to 363.15 K, and the mole ratio of caprolactam increased from 2:1 to 6:1. The absorption and desorption of NO and NO2 was practically reversible in the ionic liquids, which was characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance. The method, which is at least partially reversible, offers interesting possibilities for the removal of NO and NO2.

IMPLICATIONS Basic ionic liquids with amino groups were synthesized and used to capture CO2, SO2, and H2S, and to promote hydrogenation of CO2. In this paper, the authors used caprolactam tetrabutyl ammonium halide ionic liquid (IL) as absorbing medium in which NOx could be absorbed. NOx desorbed from the absorbent could be efficiently reduced by right catalysts at high temperature. The absorbed NO and NO2 gas could be desorbed at higher temperature, allowing the ionic liquids to be reused several times without loss of capability. It was believed that caprolactam tetrabutyl ammonium bromide (CPL-TBAB) ILs may be useful for NOx removal reagent for pollution control.  相似文献

In the present study, photocatalytic reactions of nitrogen oxides (NOx = NO + NO2) were studied on commercial TiO2 doped facade paints in a flow tube photoreactor under simulated atmospheric conditions. Fast photocatalytic conversion of NO and NO2 was observed only for the photocatalytic paints and not for non-catalytic reference paints. Nitrous acid (HONO) was formed in the dark on all paints studied, however, it efficiently decomposes under irradiation only on the photocatalytic samples. Thus, it is concluded that photocatalytic paint surfaces do not represent a daytime source of HONO, in contrast to other recent studies on pure TiO2 surfaces. As main final product, the formation of adsorbed nitric acid/nitrate anion (HNO3/NO3?) was observed with near to unity yield. In addition, traces of H2O2 were observed in the gas phase only in the presence of O2. Formation of the greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N2O) could be excluded. The uptake kinetics of NO, NO2 and HONO was very fast under atmospheric conditions (e.g. γ(NO + TiO2) > 10?5). Thus, the uptake on urban surfaces (painted houses, etc.) will be limited by transport. For a hypothetically painted street canyon, an average reduction of nitrogen oxide levels of ca. 5% is estimated. Since the harmful HNO3/NO3? is formed on the surface of the photoactive paints, whereas it is formed in the gas phase in the atmosphere, the use of photocatalytic paints may also help to reduce acid deposition, e.g. on plants, or nitric acid related health issues.  相似文献

Experiments were carried out to determine the relative chemiluminescence quenching efficiencies as a function of third body concentration for each of the common combustion products, H2O, CO2, CO, H2, O2 and Ar. These results are compared with those of other investigators. The effect of reaction chamber pressure on analyzer response and the development of an analyzer design which incorporates an adjustable sample capillary inlet capable of maintaining a constant molar flow rate of sample gas to the reaction chamber are discussed. The effect of carbon monoxide interference on chemiluminescent NOx measurement has been isolated and found to be significant. A means of correcting NO, measurements for these CO interference effects is described. Quantification of NO and NO2 absorption in liquid water in NOx sampling systems has been made. Recommendations for sample system designs to handle the presence of water in the sample gas are made.  相似文献

The present study reviews the sampling environments and chemical transformations of nitrogen oxides that may occur within probes and sample lines while sampling combustion products. Experimental data are presented for NOx transformations in silica and 316 stainless steel tubing when sampling simulated combustion products in the presence of oxygen, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen. A temperature range of 25° to 400°C is explored. In the absence of CO and H2, 316 stainless steel is observed to promote the reduction of nitrogen dioxide to nitric oxide at temperatures in excess of 300°C, and silica is found to be passive to chemical transformation. In the presence of CO, reduction of N02 to NO is observed in 316 stainless steel at temperatures in excess of 100°C, and reduction of NO2 to NO in silica is observed at 400°C. In the presence of H2, NO2 is reduced to NO in 316 stainless steel at 200°C and NOx is removed at temperatures exceeding 200°C. In silica, the presence of H2 promotes the reduction of NO2 to NO at 300°C and the removal of NOx above 300°C.  相似文献

Smog chamber/FTIR techniques were used to study the relative reactivity of OH radicals with methanol, ethanol, phenol, C2H4, C2H2, and p-xylene in 750 Torr of air diluent at 296±2 K. Experiments were performed with, and without, 500–8000 μg m−3 (4000–50 000 μm2 cm−3 surface area per volume) of NaCl, (NH4)2SO4 or NH4NO3 aerosol. In contrast to the recent findings of Oh and Andino (Atmospheric Environment 34 (2000) 2901, 36 (2002) 149; International Journal of Chemical Kinetics 33 (2001) 422) there was no discernable effect of aerosol on the rate of loss of the organic compounds via reaction with OH radicals. Gas kinetic theory arguments cast doubt upon the findings of Oh and Andino. The available data suggest that the answer to the title question is “No”. As part of this work the rate constants for reactions of OH radicals with methanol, ethanol, and phenol in 750 Torr of air at 296 K were determined to be: kOH+CH3OH=(8.12±0.54)×10−13, kOH+C2H5OH=(3.47±0.32)×10−12 and kOH+phenol=(3.27±0.31)×10−11 cm3 molecule−1 s−1.  相似文献

A study of the effect of water vapor on the photochemical system NO2 + alphapinene + hv was conducted. A Hotpack Environmental Room was used as a constant temperature chamber, a bank of ultraviolet and fluorescent lamps as a source of simulated solar radiation, and a 150-liter FEP Teflon bag as a reaction vessel. Representative concentrations of 10 pphm NO2 and 50 pphm alphapinene were used in a 3 × 2 × 2 factorial design where absolute humidities of 0.0000, 0.0090, 0.01 80 g H2O/g dry air were varied.

Matheson zero air was passed through a clean air train and used as the diluent. Nitrogen dioxide was added to the reaction mixture by a permeation tube, and water and alpha-pinene by evaporation techniques.

Variables measured as a function of time over a 2-hour irradiation period were total oxidants (Mast Ozone Meter), condensation nuclei (General Electric Small Particle Detector), ozone (Regener Chemiluminescent Ozone Meter), nitrogen dioxide and nitric oxide (Technicon Autoanalyzer), and alpha-pinene (Perkin- Elmer Model 800 gas chromatograph).

Upon irradiation, systems containing nitrogen dioxide and alpha-pinene formed oxidants, ozone, condensation nuclei, and nitric oxide. Based on the differences between simultaneous oxidant and ozone measurements, the formation of peroxide- like compounds may be inferred. During the course of the irradiation, nitrogen dioxide and alpha-pinene were consumed. The concentration-time profiles of all variables were characteristic of those exhibited by typical photochemical smog systems.

An effect of water vapor on the systems studied was demonstrated. Increasing humidity decreased net mean/time oxidant and ozone production and net maximum condensation nuclei production. These effects were significant at a 0.05 confidence level. Effects of water on average mean/time NO2, NO, and alphapinene concentrations were insignificant at this level. The oxidant to ozone ratio was found to decrease with increasing humidity.

The significant decreases in net oxidant and ozone production and NO2 consumption with increasing water vapor concentration in systems of nitrogen dioxide alone, suggests that water manifests an effect on pertinent inorganic reactions, and the data also suggest additional water participation in the organic reactions.  相似文献

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to develop a technology that can convert biogas to synthesis gas (SynGas), a low-emission substituted energy, using a non-thermal-pulsed plasma method. To investigate the characteristics of Syn-Gas production from simulated biogas, the reforming characteristics in relation to variations in pulse frequency, biogas component ratio (C3H8/CO2), vapor flow ratio (H2O/total flow rate [TFR]), biogas velocity, and pulse power were studied. A maximum conversion rate of 49.1% was achieved for the biogas when the above parameters were 500 Hz, 1.5, 0.52, 0.32 m/sec, and 657 W, respectively. Under the above conditions, the dry basis mole fractions of the SynGas were as follows: H2 = 0.645,CH4 = 0.081, C2H2 = 0.067, C3H6 = 0.049, CO = 0.008 and C2H4 = 0.004. The ratio of hydrogen to the other intermediates in the SynGas (H2/ITMs) was 3.1.  相似文献

The effects of the burning of fireworks on air quality in Beijing was firstly assessed from the ambient concentrations of various air pollutants (SO2, NO2, PM2.5, PM10 and chemical components in the particles) during the lantern festival in 2006. Eighteen ions, 20 elements, and black carbon were measured in PM2.5 and PM10, and the levels of organic carbon could be well estimated from the concentrations of dicarboxylic acids. Primary components of Ba, K, Sr, Cl, Pb, Mg and secondary components of C5H6O42−, C3H2O42−, C2O42−, C4H4O42−, SO42−, NO3 were over five times higher in the lantern days than in the normal days. The firework particles were acidic and of inorganic matter mostly with less amounts of secondary components. Primary aerosols from the burning of fireworks were mainly in the fine mode, while secondary formation of acidic anions mainly took place on the coarse particles. Nitrate was mainly formed through homogeneous gas-phase reactions of NO2, while sulfate was largely from heterogeneous catalytic transformations of SO2. Fe could catalyze the formation of nitrate through the reaction of α-Fe2O3 with HNO3, while in the formation of sulfate, Fe is not only the catalyst, but also the oxidant. A simple method using the concentration of potassium and a modified method using the ratio of Mg/Al have been developed to quantify the source contribution of fireworks. It was found that over 90% of the total mineral aerosol and 98% of Pb, 43% of total carbon, 28% of Zn, 8% of NO3, and 3% of SO42− in PM2.5 were from the emissions of fireworks on the lantern night.  相似文献

Mass-balance models for indoor concentrations of CO, NO and NO2 were applied to an energy-efficient townhouse. Model parameters included source emission rates, infiltrating airflows, and, for NO2, loss rate coefficients. Emission factors for CO, NO and NO2 were estimated for each of the gas-fired appliances in the house. Airflows were estimated using sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) decay techniques. Loss rates for NO2 were calculated as the difference between NO2 removal rates and estimated air exchange rates; CO and NO concentrations decayed at a rate not significantly different than that for SF6. Comparing model predictions with measured concentrations yielded differences averaging 17% for CO and NO, and 28% for NO2.  相似文献

The ozonolysis of isobutene and isoprene was performed in a 570 ℓ static reactor at 295 K and 730 Torr synthetic air in the presence and absence of water vapour, with the reactant concentration ranges of 1–6 ppmv. Products were analysed by a combination of FTIR spectroscopy, GC-FID, and HPLC. For both alkenes, the yields of H2O2 and the primary carbonyl products (acetone for isobutene, methacrolein and methylvinyl ketone for isoprene) increased under humid conditions. In the isoprene ozonolysis, the H2O2 yields relative to the O3 conversion were, as determined from the initial rate of the formation, 1 and 9% for dry and humid conditions, respectively. The increase in its yield under the humid conditions was correlated with the sum of the increase in the yields of methacrolein and methylvinyl ketone (∼13%). This was explained by rapid decomposition of the transient α-hydroxy hydroperoxides formed in the reaction of H2O with the two stabilised C4 Criegee intermediates. Atmospheric relevance of the results is discussed.  相似文献

Adaptation of available instruments to the analysis of NO2 and NH3 became important with the introduction of the Federal Constant Volume Sampling procedure for exhaust analysis in 1970. Two instruments, the NO optical detector (NOOD) and the non-dispersive infrared analyzer (ND1R), are both fast and accurate. The use of a system of two converters in conjunction with either of these instruments permits the analysis of a gas stream for NO, NO2, and NH3. NO is measured on the gas stream before conversion; NO2 is determined after the gas stream has passed over a C-Mo converter at 475°C; and NH3 is determined after the gas has been conducted over a C-Cu converter.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

At conditions typical of a bag filter exposed to a coal-fired flue gas that has been adiabatically cooled with water, calcium hydroxide and calcium silicate solids were exposed to a dilute, humidified gas stream of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and sulfur dioxide (SO2) in a packed-bed reactor. A prior study found that NO2 reacted readily with surface water of alkaline and non-alkaline solids to produce nitrate, nitrite, and nitric oxide (NO). With SO2 present in the gas stream, NO2 also reacted with S(IV), a product of SO2 removal, on the exterior of an alkaline solid. The oxidation of S(IV) to S(VI) by oxygen reduced the availability of S(IV) and lowered removal of NO2. Subsequent acidification of the sorbent by the removal of NO2 and SO2 facilitated the production of NO. However, the conversion of nitrous acid to sulfur-nitrogen compounds reduced NO production and enhanced SO2 removal. A reactor model based on empirical and semi-empirical rate expressions predicted rates of SO2 removal, NO2 removal, and NO production by calcium silicate solids. Rate expressions from the reactor model were inserted into a second program, which predicted the removal of SO2 and NOx by a continuous process, such as the collection of alkaline solids in a baghouse. The continuous process model, depending upon inlet conditions, predicted 30-40% removal for NO and 50-90% removal for SO2. These x 2 results are relevant to dry scrubbing technology for combined SO2 and NOx removal that first oxidizes NO to NO2 by the addition of methanol into the flue duct.  相似文献

The principle of this detector is based on the measurement of the intensity of the ultraviolet fluorescence of SO2 produced by absorption of the Zn 2138 Å or Cd 2288 Å line. The fluorescence intensity was found to be linear from 0.1 to 500 ppm of SO2 in air with the Zn lamp and from 0.1 to 1600 ppm with the Cd lamp. The detection limit at present is about 20 ppb. There is no detectable interference from O3, H2S, NO2, CO2, CO, or H2, although the presence of a large concentration of CS2 (500 times as much as SO2) NO (500 times) or C2H4 (4000 times) interferes with the measurement. The presence of 2% H20 reduces the signal by 25%, while up to 1 % CH4 has almost no effect.  相似文献

We analyse the air quality data measured at a green area of Buenos Aires City (Argentina) during 38 days in winter. We study the relationships between ambient concentrations of nitric oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), ozone (O3) and nitrogen oxides (NOx=NO+NO2). The variation of the level of oxidant (OX=O3+NO2) with the NOx is obtained. It can be seen that the level of OX at a given location is made up of two contributions: one independent and another dependent on the NOx concentration. The first one can be considered as a regional contribution, equivalent to the background O3 concentration and the second one as a local contribution that depends on the level of primary pollution. Local oxidant sources may include direct NO2 emissions, the reaction of NO with O2 at high-NOx levels, and the emission of species that promote the conversion of NO to NO2. The final category of emissions may include the nitrous acid (HONO) that is emitted directly in vehicle exhaust. Finally, we present a diurnal variation of the local as well as regional contributions and the dependence of the last one on wind direction.  相似文献

In order to investigate the effects of humidity on the gas-phase oxidation of SO2 in polluted air and on the subsequent aerosol formation process, photoirradiation experiments were carried out by means of a 4-m3 chamber, in which mixtures containing SO2, NO and C3H6 with concentrations in the ppm range were exposed to simulated solar radiation in different relative humidity (r.h.) conditions. The total amount of oxidized SO2 was quantified from the SO42− yield determined by the chemical analysis of the aerosol product, and a part due to the oxidation by the OH radical was evaluated by estimating the OH concentration from the decay rate of C3H6. The remaining part was assigned to the oxidation by the Criegee intermediate, as it had a good correlation with the progress of the O3 + C3H6 reaction. The contributions of the two oxidizing species to the total conversion and the oxidation rate of SO2 were measured as functions of r.h. As a result, experimental evidence was obtained for the prediction of Calvert and Stockwell's (1983, Envir. Sci. Technol. 17, 428A–443A) simulation that the oxidation due to the Criegee intermediate was retarded by the increase in humidity. The OH contribution, on the other hand, was almost independent of r.h. It was observed consequently that the total oxidized amount of SO2 considerably decreased as r.h. was higher. The humidity effect on the aerosol formation process was found to be more complicated than the effect on the gas-phase chemistry. The maximum rate of increase in the particle number concentration rose linearly with increasing r.h., but the number concentration itself measured at its maximum or at the end of the irradiation reached a ceiling value around r.h. = 30% and went down for higher r.h. The average panicle size in the final stage of the reaction showed a minimum around the same r.h. at which the number concentration was maximum. The H2SO4 concentration in the mist particles, however, decreased monotonically as r.h. got higher. It was suggested that these different responses against the increase in humidity resulted from the cooperation of several processes such as the H2SO4 monomer formation, the H2O condensation, the particle coagulation, etc., which had different dependences on r.h.  相似文献

The interference in HNO3 determination due to HNO2 and NOx retention on nylon filters has been evaluated in laboratory and field conditions. Nitrous acid is retained on nylon filters with efficiencies varying from 25% at 12ℓ min−1 to 80% at 2ℓ min−1, yielding NO2 ion. In ambient sampling performed during photochemical smog episodes, NO2 is oxidized to NO3 with conversion factors up to 100%, resulting in a positive bias in HNO3 determination.NO2 reacts heterogeneously with H2O on nylon surfaces according to the reaction 2NO2 + H2O → HNO2 + HNO3 with a removal constant of about 1 × 10−4 ms−1 at a H2O concentration of 20,000 ppm. The resulting nitrite and nitrate are independent of the sampling flow rate, while NO2 concentration, sampling time and exposed nylon surface area play a directly proportional role. Accordingly, the relative interference of NO2 with respect to HNO3 determination is almost negligible for nylon filters, usually run at relatively high flow rates, while it may be significant for nylon denuders, which are characterized by larger exposed surfaces and lower operating flow rates.  相似文献
