The Environmental Protection Agency is reviewing the need for a short-term NO2 standard based on an averaging time of three hours or less. State Implementation plans and New Source Reviews will require air quality simulation techniques capable of estimating ambient NO2 concentrations. There is a need for multi-source (urban) models and for point source models.

A review of currently available techniques for the estimation of NO2 concentrations resulting from NOx point sources is presented. The available methods include simple screening techniques and refined reactive plume models. The screening techniques first use a standard gaussian dispersion model to estimate the maximum 1 hr NOx concentration caused by the source. The second step involves estimating the fraction of this NO* concentration occurring as NO2.

Reactive plume models numerically simulate the simultaneous effects of dispersion and chemistry on NO2 concentrations. Organic as well as inorganic reactions are incorporated. Reactive plume models should be used, where screening techniques indicate the potential for violation of the NO2 standard.

Current generation reactive plume models neglect the effect of turbulent concentration fluctuation on NO2 formation and use inappropriately large dispersion coefficients to estimate plume concentrations. Approaches being developed to resolve these problems are discussed.  相似文献

The body of information presented in this paper is directed to those individuals who may be concerned with principal plume dispersion models at coal-burning power plants. About 20 years of comprehensive field surveillance and documentation of dispersion of power plant emissions for a varied range of unit sizes, stack heights, and meteorological conditions have determined the Tennessee Valley Authority’s interpretation of principal plume dispersion models. TVA’s experience indicates that as unit sizes are increased and taller stacks are constructed, the plume dispersion model associated with maximum surface concentrations changes. Maximum surface concentrations for principal plume dispersion models were approximately equal for the early small plants. However, the coning model was considered the critical plume dispersion model because the frequency of recurrence of surface concentrations from this model was appreciably greater than other models.

There were progressive changes because of an increase in unit sizes and stack heights; the magnitude of maximum surface concentrations from the coning model decreased, and the magnitude (relative to the coning model) of concentrations from the inversion breakup model increased. However, with plumes from newer and larger units with higher stacks, the trapping dispersion model became prominent. Finally, by the time unit size had increased to 900 mw and stack height to about 245 meters, as at Bull Run Power Plant, the magnitude of surface concentrations associated with trapping had increased to such a degree that it became the critical dispersion model identified with power plants of this size.  相似文献

The dispersion of pollutants from a roadway tunnel portal is mainly determined by the interaction between the ambient wind and the jet stream from the tunnel portal. In principal, Eulerian microscale models by solving the conservation equations for mass, momentum, and energy, are thus able to simulate effects such as buoyancy etc. properly. However, for engineering applications such models need too much CPU time, and are not easy to handle by non-scientific personnel. Only a few dispersion models, applicable for regulatory purposes, have so far appeared in the literature. These models are either empirical models not always applicable for different sites, or they do not capture important physical effects like buoyancy phenomena. Here, a rather simple model is presented, which takes into account most of the important processes considered to govern the dispersion of a jet stream from portals. These are the exit velocity, the buoyancy, the influence of ambient wind direction fluctuations on the position of the jet stream, and traffic induced turbulence. Although the model contains some heuristic elements, it was successfully tested against tracer experiments taken near a motorway tunnel portal in Austria. The model requires relatively little CPU time. Current limitations of the model include the neglect of terrain, building, and vehicle effects on the dispersion, and the neglect of the horizontal dispersion arising from entrainment of ambient air in the jet stream. The latter could lead to an underestimation of plume spreads for higher wind speeds. The validation of the model will be the focus of future research. The experimental data set is also available for the scientific community.  相似文献

A method for calculating the dispersion of plumes in the atmospheric boundary layer is presented. The method is easy to use on a routine basis. The inputs to the method are fundamental meteorological parameters, which act as distinct scaling parameters for the turbulence. The atmospheric boundary layer is divided into a number of regimes. For each scaling regime we suggest models for the dispersion in the vertical direction. The models directly give the crosswind-integrated concentrations at the ground, xy, for nonbuoyant releases from a continuous point source. Generally the vertical concentration profile is proposed to be other than Gaussian. The lateral concentration profile is always assumed to be Gaussian, and models for determining the lateral spread σy are proposed. The method is limited to horizontally homogeneous conditions and travel distances less than 10km. The method is evaluated against independent tracer experiments over land. The overall agreement between measurements and predictions is very good and better than that found with the traditional Gaussian plume model.  相似文献

A general modeling approach is proposed to predict the distribution of air pollutant concentrations and in particular the upper percentiles. The approach is hybrid in that it combines features of both deterministic and statistical distribution models. These features include causality and the attempted quantification of stochastic variability and uncertainty. The properties of deterministic and statistical distribution models are discussed separately and this clarifies the contribution that can be made by hybrid modeling. In this way the underlying assumptions are clearly presented. The range of successful applications of the hybrid approach is briefly reviewed. These involve relatively inert pollutants from urban/industrial, point source, elevated point source and roadway emissions. Areas of further research are outlined which would enhance the routine use of the approach and extend its application. Sufficient development has been undertaken, however, that the present standard set of air pollutant dispersion models could be easily updated to provide hybrid models capable of predicting frequency distributions of air pollutant levels under stipulated assumptions.  相似文献

Low wind scenarios are associated with the worst air pollution episodes in urban street canyons. Under these conditions, operational dispersion models often over-predict pollutant concentration. Traffic-producing turbulence (TPT) becomes dominant in mixing and diluting traffic-related pollutants under low wind speed conditions. Determining the TPT effect on the flow and dispersion patterns within urban street canyons is crucial for the development of detailed operational dispersion models for assessing urban air quality. Several spatially averaged TPT formulations have been recently proposed in the literature. However, only a few attempts have been made so far to incorporate different TPT schemes into operational dispersion models and evaluate their performance using measurements. In this paper, several TPT schemes presented in literature were evaluated. Two TPT schemes were implemented in the well-validated Windows version of the Danish Operational Street Pollution Model (WinOSPM). Both formulations were evaluated using six independent datasets of roadside CO concentrations collected in European cities. Statistical and sensitivity analyses were undertaken to test the performance of the different formulations. The results showed that the overall model performance was significantly sensitive to the TPT schemes adopted. The model performance improved when a detailed characterisation of the TPT, depending on the density of road traffic, was used.  相似文献

Currently, the depiction of urban air quality at boundary layer scale uses modelled climatic and land cover data. However, such models are difficult to verify, and only low to moderate accuracy may be achieved due to the complexity of the input data required and the reliance on assumptions about dispersion patterns. The provision of comprehensive air quality data to urban residents in city districts, at a level of detail commensurate with other Location-Based Services (LBS) which are time- and place-sensitive, has therefore not been possible. A method for urban air quality monitoring over cities at boundary layer scale, other than by the use of air quality models is presented here. The system presented uses empirical Aerosol Optical Thickness (AOT) data in near-real time, combining AOT data from AERONET with aerosol vertical profiles computed from twice-daily MODIS satellite images at 500 m resolution, to give three dimensional (3D) air quality data over the urban landscape. There has been no previous attempt to project the horizontal spatial distribution of aerosols from satellite image pixels into a vertical dimension to give a spatially comprehensive three dimensional record of air quality. The paper describes the sources and accuracy of the AOT data input to the system as well as its storage and retrieval on a Geographic Information System (GIS) platform, to provide air quality and visibility information according to user query at any 3D geographical location, including individual buildings or building floor.  相似文献

As part of the DAPPLE programme two large scale urban tracer experiments using multiple simultaneous releases of cyclic perfluoroalkanes from fixed location point sources was performed. The receptor concentrations along with relevant meteorological parameters measured are compared with a three screening dispersion models in order to best predict the decay of pollution sources with respect to distance. It is shown here that the simple dispersion models tested here can provide a reasonable upper bound estimate of the maximum concentrations measured with an empirical model derived from field observations and wind tunnel studies providing the best estimate. An indoor receptor was also used to assess indoor concentrations and their pertinence to commonly used evacuation procedures.  相似文献

A simple method for estimating enhanced dispersion resulting from the overall effect of buildings is presented and evaluated. A framework for applying the method to general plume dispersion modeling problems is suggested and examples are provided. The Gaussian plume equation has been modified to incorporate building wake enhanced dispersion parameters beyond the wake cavity region, and the resulting ground-level plume centerline concentration estimates are compared to 10 sets of field measurements. The results indicate that the method can provide a good correction for the overall effect of adjacent buildings. The effect of building wake enhanced dispersion on maximum ground-level concentrations is to decrease their values for releases near ground-level and to significantly increase their values for elevated releases. For elevated releases, enhanced horizontal dispersion dilutes the plume more rapidly; enhanced vertical dispersion also rapidly dilutes the plume but it can also bring the plume to ground-level while the in-plume concentrations are still high.  相似文献

This work is a contribution to a large project, aimed at the development of an advanced environmental assessment modelling system to be used in Japan. The modelling system here considered consisted of the RAMS and HYPACT coupled models. The RAMS code was modified to properly simulate local scale phenomena using a fine mesh size of 250 m. In this direction, the main aim here was to investigate the effect of the choice of the turbulence closure scheme on the dispersion of pollutants. Our modified version of the RAMS/HYPACT model chain was validated using field experiments which were carried out by the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI) in the area of Mt. Tsukuba (Japan). The mean flow, turbulence and concentration fields obtained using two alternative turbulence closure schemes are compared. A discussion on the different performances of the turbulence closures is presented and the influence of the closure schemes over the plume dispersion is investigated.  相似文献

Many complex models are available to study the dispersion of contaminants or ventilation effectiveness in indoor spaces. Because of the computationally complex numerical schemes employed, most of these models require mainframe computers or workstations. However, simple design tools or guidelines are needed, in addition to complicated models. A dispersion model based on the basic governing equations was developed and uses an analytical solution. Because the concentration is expressed by an analytical solution, the grid size and time steps are user definable. A computer program was used to obtain numerical results and to obtain release history from a thermodynamic source model. The model can be used to estimate three-dimensional spatial and temporal variations in concentrations resulting from transient gas releases in an enclosure. The model was used to study a gas release scenario from a pressurized cylinder into a large ventilated building, in this case, a transit parking and fueling facility.  相似文献

A tracer technique using certain of the rare earth elements which are easily activated by neutrons has been developed for the analysis of air pollution problems. Studies employing these tracers were made to determine whether the available meteorological dispersion models can be used effectively to describe pollution emissions from selected industries in the vicinity of Albany, Oregon. The Gaussian plume model was found to be satisfactory for the moderately intense turbulence fields which characterize Stability Types B, C, and D, including cases in which the pollution was trapped by an inversion layer aloft. For sources near ground level, however, it was necessary to make allowance for urban influences on plume dispersion. A box model best described the observed dispersal pattern when the upward penetration of the very intense turbulence of Stability Type A was limited by an inversion layer aloft. These meteorological models were applied using a “blind” experimental procedure to predict the emission rates of the effluent from multiple sources of air pollution in the Albany area. It was found that these techniques can be used to predict the rate of emission within a factor of two for multiple sources consisting of three stacks.  相似文献

A solute transport model that describes nonequilibrium adsorption in soil/groundwater systems by mass transfer equations for film and intraparticle diffusion is presented. The model is useful in cases where breakthrough curve spreading cannot be explained by dispersion only. To evaluate its validity, the model was applied to several data sets from column experiments. The validity was also proved by a comparison with an analytical solution for the limiting case of predominating dispersion. Furthermore, a sensitivity analysis was performed to illustrate the influence of different process and sorption parameters (pore water velocity, intraparticle mass transfer coefficient, isotherm nonlinearity) on the shape of the calculated breakthrough curves. The application of the proposed model is discussed in comparison to the widely used dispersed flow/local equilibrium model, and a relationship between both models, which is based on a lumped parameter approach, is shown.  相似文献

The present work indentifies some environmental and health impacts of a municipal solid waste bio-drying plant taking into account the PCDD/F release into the atmosphere, its concentration at ground level and its deposition. Four scenarios are presented for the process air treatment and management: biofilter or regenerative thermal oxidation treatment, at two different heights. A Gaussian dispersion model, AERMOD, was used in order to model the dispersion and deposition of the PCDD/F emissions into the atmosphere. Considerations on health risk, from different exposure pathways are presented using an original approach. The case of biofilter at ground level resulted the most critical, depending on the low dispersion of the pollutants. Suggestions on technical solutions for the optimization of the impact are presented.  相似文献

Correct prediction of the initial rise of a plume due to momentum and buoyancy effects is an important factor in dispersion modelling. A new plume rise scheme, based upon conservation equations of mass, momentum and heat, for the Lagrangian model, NAME, is described. The conservation equations are consistent with the well-known analytical plume rise formulae for both momentum- and buoyancy-dominated plumes. The performance of the new scheme is assessed against data from the Kincaid field experiment. Results show that the new scheme adds value to the model and significantly outperforms the previous plume rise scheme. Using data from assessments of atmospheric dispersion models using the Kincaid data set, it is shown that NAME is comparable to other models over short ranges.  相似文献

Recent advances in the development of receptor-oriented source apportionment techniques (models) have provided a new approach to evaluating the performance of particulate dispersion models. Rather than limiting performance evaluations to comparisons of particulate mass, receptor model estimates of source impacts can be used to open new opportunities for in-depth analysis of dispersion model performance. Recent experiences in the joint application of receptor and dispersion models have proven valuable in developing increased confidence in source impact projections used for control strategy development. Airshed studies that have followed this approach have identified major errors in emission inventory data bases and provided technical support for modeling assumptions.

This paper focuses on the joint application of dispersion and receptor models to particulate source impact analysis and dispersion model performance and evaluation. The limitations and advantages of each form of modeling are reviewed and case studies are examined. The paper is offered to provide several new perspectives into the model evaluation process in the hope that they may prove useful to those that manage our nation’s air resources.  相似文献

The predictive potential of air quality models and thus their value in emergency management and public health support are critically dependent on the quality of their meteorological inputs. The atmospheric flow is the primary cause of the dispersion of airborne substances. The scavenging of pollutants by cloud particles and precipitation is an important sink of atmospheric pollution and subsequently determines the spatial distribution of the deposition of pollutants. The long-standing problem of the spin-up of clouds and precipitation in numerical weather prediction models limits the accuracy of the prediction of short-range dispersion and deposition from local sources. The resulting errors in the atmospheric concentration of pollutants also affect the initial conditions for the calculation of the long-range transport of these pollutants. Customary the spin-up problem is avoided by only using NWP (Numerical Weather Prediction) forecasts with a lead time greater than the spin-up time of the model. Due to the increase of uncertainty with forecast range this reduces the quality of the associated forecasts of the atmospheric flow.In this article recent improvements through diabatic initialization in the spin-up of large-scale precipitation in the Hirlam NWP model are discussed. In a synthetic example using a puff dispersion model the effect is demonstrated of these improvements on the deposition and dispersion of pollutants with a high scavenging coefficient, such as sulphur, and a low scavenging coefficient, such as cesium-137. The analysis presented in this article leads to the conclusion that, at least for situations where large-scale precipitation dominates, the improved model has a limited spin-up so that its full forecast range can be used. The implication for dispersion modeling is that the improved model is particularly useful for short-range forecasts and the calculation of local deposition. The sensitivity of the hydrological processes to proper initialization implies that the spin-up problem may reoccur with changes in the model and increased model resolution. Spin-up should be an ongoing concern for atmospheric modelers.  相似文献
