The controlled atmosphere aspects of the environmental chambers at the University of Utah are described. Control of wind velocity, CO2, concentration, temperature, relative humidity, and pollutant concentration are discussed. Requirements of our research program dictating the chamber design include: (1) ability to expose plants to air pollutants under the same environmental conditions at different times; (2) ability to simulate field environmental conditions within acceptable limits; (3) ability to study the effects of temperature, light, relative humidity, and wind velocity on response of plants to air pollutants; (4) ability to measure growth suppression, respiration, and transpiration; and (5) ability to measure the pollutant uptake rate of the plants. 相似文献

The operating characteristics of a pilot baghouse and the filtering characteristics of fly ash filtered from the flue gas of a pulverized coal-fired power plant were studied by techniques developed in the engineering research laboratories of the National Center for Air Pollution Control in Cincinnati. The permeability of the dust cake varied with the operating conditions of the baghouse in a way that significantly affects the pressure drop and power requirements of the system. 相似文献

With newly developed monitoring techniques, investigators used the sensitive tobacco variety, Bel-W3, as a monitor for photochemical air pollution at different locations within 75 miles of Cincinnati, Ohio. Observations during the summers of 1966 through 1968 revealed almost daily injury to monitoring plants, fairly uniform total seasonal injury at all locations, and a marked variation in both oxidant and injury from one season to another within the city. The relationship between oxidant level and injury was not found to be consistent. 相似文献

In the past, many species of pine have been severely damaged by acute forms of air pollution associated with ore smelting. More recently, damage to ponderosa pine in the state of Washington has been associated with atmospheric fluoride, and this species in particular has also suffered smog damage in southern California. In the East, white pine has been declining in the vicinity of certain soft-coal-burning power plants, and in one case downwind from an oil-burning power plant: also, throughout the East, an atmospheric oxidant of unknown source has caused a type of needle blight on white pine. Trash burners and city dump combustion have led to the hilling of certain pine species, leaving other intermixed pine species unharmed. Localized damage to white pine from automobile exhaust has been observed. Differences in the susceptibility of neighboring trees of the same species to a given air pollutant have been observed repeatedly. 相似文献

Abstract Subsequent to the 1997 promulgation of the Federal Reference Method (FRM) for monitoring fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in ambient air, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) received reports that the DOW 704 diffusion oil used in the method’s Well Impactor Ninety-Six (WINS) fractionator would occasionally crystallize during field use, particularly under wintertime conditions. Although the frequency of occurrence on a nationwide basis was low, uncertainties existed as to whether crystallization of the DOW 704 oil may adversely affect a sampling event’s data quality. In response to these concerns, EPA and the State of Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection jointly conducted a series of specialized tests to determine whether crystallized oil adversely affected the performance of the WINS fractionator. In the laboratory, an experimental setup used dry ice to artificially induce crystallization of the diffusion oil under controlled conditions. Using primary polystyrene latex calibration aerosols, standard size-selective performance tests of the WINS fractionator showed that neither the position nor the shape of the WINS particle size fractionation curve was substantially influenced by the crystallization of the DOW 704 oil. No large particle bounce from the crystallized impaction surface was observed. During wintertime field tests, crystallization of the DOW 704 oil did not adversely affect measured PM2.5 concentrations. Regression of measurements with crystallized DOW 704 versus liquid dioctyl sebacate (DOS) oil produced slope, intercept, and R2 values of 0.98, 0.1, and 0.997 μg/m3, respectively. Additional field tests validated the use of DOS as an effective impaction substrate. As a result of these laboratory and field tests, DOS oil has been approved by EPA as a substitute for DOW 704 oil. Since the field deployment of DOS oil in 2001, users of this alternative oil have not reported any operational problems associated with its use in the PM2.5 FRM. Limited field evaluation of the BGI very sharp cut cyclone indicates that it provides a viable alternative to the WINS fractionator. 相似文献

ABSTRACT Profiles of the sources of nonmethane organic compounds (NMOCs) were developed for emissions from vehicles, petroleum fuels (gasoline, liquefied petroleum gas [LPG], and natural gas), a petroleum refinery, a smelter, and a cast iron factory in Cairo, Egypt. More than 100 hydrocarbons and oxygenated hydrocarbons were tentatively identified and quantified. Gasoline-vapor and whole-gasoline profiles could be distinguished from the other profiles by high concentrations of the C5 and C6 saturated hydrocarbons. The vehicle emission profile was similar to the whole-gasoline profile, with the exception of the unsaturated and aromatic hydrocarbons, which were present at higher concentrations in the vehicle emission profile. High levels of the C2-C4 saturated hydrocarbons, particularly n-butane, were characteristic features of the petroleum refinery emissions. The smelter and cast iron factory emissions were similar to the refinery emissions; however, the levels of benzene and toluene were greater in the former two sources. The LPG and natural gas emissions contained high concentrations of n-butane and ethane, respectively. The NMOC source profiles for Cairo were distinctly different from profiles for U.S. sources, indicating that NMOC source profiles are sensitive to the particular composition of petroleum fuels that are used in a location. 相似文献

Amelioration of the air pollution problem, whether the result of mobile or stationary source emissions, will depend primarily upon mechanical controls and fuel and process changes. Urban and transportation planning, however, may provide supplementary means for reducing both emissions of pollutants and the exposure of persons to undesirably high ambient concentrations. The body of information in this paper is directed to the planners and policy-makers whose decisions influence the nature of our environment. Three general areas are identified in which the policies, plans, and standards developed by environmental planners influence the air pollution problem : 1. Long-term, large-scale urban planning involving entire or substantial parts of metropolitan areas. 2. Design and operation of transportation systems. 3. Location, design, and construction of individual roadways and structures. In each of these three areas, the Air Pollution Control Office has initiated projects that will assist planners in evaluating the air pollution implications of their activities. One study estimates motor vehicle emissions for two alternative metropolitan land use plans proposed for the Puget Sound Region. Because land-use patterns differ, the location and intensity of transportation demands also differ. Total motor vehicle pollutant emissions are found to vary appreciably between the two plans. A second study measures the variation in pollutant concentrations at various vertical and horizontal distances from existing roadways. Relationships are being established between meteorological factors, traffic flow characteristics, and pollutant concentrations that will assist in predicting the environmental impact of proposed roadways. 相似文献

The Public Health Service and the Bureau of Mines are conducting a joint study to evaluate a number of flue-gas-stream components from coal-burning power plants. Emissions of fly ash, sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, polynuclear hydrocarbons, total gaseous hydrocarbons, formaldehyde, certain metals, and carbon dioxide are determined. A previous paper covered air pollutant emissions from vertical-fired and front-wall-fired power plant boilers. A study of the potential effectiveness of several strategies for reducing pollutant emissions from aircraft at a busy metropolitan airport has been carried out. This work is based on a model of emission-producing activities at the Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport and emissions from additional sources in the region surrounding the airport. A steady-state Gaussian plume dispersion model, developed previously,1-4 was used to determine pollutant concentrations at selected receptor sites. The model of the Atlanta airport was assembled to evaluate the results of a field test of one of the strategies (engine shutdown during taxiing) performed there in late 1973. The results of that field test are reported elsewhere.5,6 A full discussion of the interpretation of the comparison between modeled and monitored pollutant concentrations during the field test and the examination of alternative strategies noted, here are contained in the final report of this project.7 相似文献

A long-term field and laboratory program designed to determine and understand the effects of air pollutants on the performance of electric contact materials has reached the one-year mark. An extensive variety of metals has been exposed at six field environments, for periods up to one year (August 1963 to August 1964). These environments were selected to provide a wide range of air pollutants in typical data processing or process control situations. The program undertakes to determine material degradation as a function of time and environment. The important air pollutants at the field sites are measured regularly, and materials are returned periodically to the laboratory for evaluation using techniques developed specifically for this program. The results of the program to date are presented, and preliminary correlations are drawn. 相似文献

Abstract This paper analyzes the air quality impacts of coal-fired power plants in the northern passageway of the West-East Power Transmission Project in China. A three-layer Lagrangian model called ATMOS, was used to simulate the spatial distribution of incremental sulfur dioxide (SO2) and coarse particulate matter (PM10) concentrations under different emission control scenarios. In the year 2005, the emissions from planned power plants mainly affected the air quality of Shanxi, Shaanxi, the common boundary of Inner Mongolia and Shanxi, and the area around the boundary between Inner Mongolia and Ningxia. In these areas, the annually averaged incremental SO2 and PM10 concentrations exceed 2 and 2.5 µg/m3, respectively. The maximum increases of the annually averaged SO2 and PM10 concentrations are 8.3 and 7.2 µg/m3, respectively, which occur around Hancheng city, near the boundary of the Shaanxi and Shanxi provinces. After integrated control measures are considered, the maximum increases of annually averaged SO2 and PM10 concentrations fall to 4.9 and 4 µg/m3, respectively. In the year 2010, the areas affected by planned power plants are mainly North Shaanxi, North Ningxia, and Northwest Shanxi. The maximum increases of the annually averaged SO2 and PM10 concentrations are, respectively, 6.3 and 5.6 µg/m3, occurring in Northwest Shanxi, which decline to 4.4 and 4.1 µg/m3 after the control measures are implemented. The results showed that the proposed power plants mainly affect the air quality of the region where the power plants are built, with little impact on East China where the electricity will be used. The influences of planned power plants on air quality will be decreased greatly by implementing integrated control measures. 相似文献

The power plant designer today has the tools at hand which enable him to predict with an adequate degree of accuracy the effect of different stack heights on ground level concentrations of the gaseous pollutants emitted from power plant stacks. Use of tall stacks will make it possible in most cases to build larger power plants at any particular site than are in service now and still operate them satisfactorily from the standpoint of air pollution. On the other hand, atmospheric pollution considerations may make it necessary at some sites to put a finite limitation on the maximum capacity that can be installed. 相似文献

Gaseous wastes and particulate emissions are produced in the process of burning coal to produce electrical energy. In attempting to control these gaseous wastes, changes in the operation efficiency of boilers and secondary equipment are likely to result, and in addition liquid and solid waste streams are produced. The interrelationships among the various forms of wastes and the effects of air quality control on process efficiency are often overlooked in studies of environmental quality management. The study was undertaken to evaluate the technical alternatives for handling gaseous and particulate emissions from coal-fired boilers and to determine the feasibility of meeting several standards simultaneously. The gaseous emissions of major importance in the combustion of coal are parti culates, oxides of sulfur, and oxides of nitrogen. Particulates can be controlled by a tradeoff among further preparation at the mine (for additional ash removal), type of boiler, use of dust control equipment and high stacks for dispersion of residual emissions, if ambient air standards are considered. Oxides of sulfur reduction depends currently on fuel substitution, limestone additives in the boiler and some form of contact process such as wet scrubbing, or the use of high stacks. Oxides of nitrogen control in coal fired boilers is restricted to small reductions by either changes in boiler operation, such as lower excess air levels, adsorption during wet scrubbing or by dispersion from high stacks. 相似文献
