Interest in air pollution injury to native vegetation has been generated with the construction and planned construction of large coal-fired power plants near the coal reserves in the southwest desert areas of the United States. Since information on the effects of SO2 on these native species was not available in the literature, fumigation studies were conducted with portable chambers placed over native species in the field with SO2 and SO2 + NO2. Pollutant concentrations were measured and controlled with instruments located in a mobile laboratory. Each fumigation was of two hours duration and the concentration ranged from 0.5 to 11 ppm SO2 and from 0.1 to 5 ppm NO2. Concentrations of SO2 above 2 ppm were required to cause injury to all but a few of the 87 species studied. Many of the native desert species proved to be highly resistant to injury from these gases.  相似文献

Caribbean pine, an economically important tree of tropical lowlands, is at risk of SO2 exposure in certain locales. Twenty-week old seedlings of Caribbean, Scots, and Virginia pine were exposed to 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 ppm SO2 (1300, 2600, and 5200 μm?3, respectively) for 1, 2, 4, and 8 h in modified controlled-environment chambers. Severity of SO2-induced leaf necrosis for each species was related to SO2 concentration and exposure duration using a regression model. The three dose-response relationships differed in detail, but Caribbean pine seedlings were generally as sensitive to SO2 as seedlings of the two highly sensitive temperate species. In addition, 173 4-wk-old Caribbean pine seedlings were exposed to 0.5 ppm SO2 for 4 h. Over one-half of these seedlings exhibited some necrosis and over one-sixth had more than 5 percent of leaf surface necrotic. It is concluded that Caribbean pine seedlings are highly sensitive to acute doses of SO2.  相似文献

Desert winter annual plants: Camissonia claviformis, C. hirtella, Caulanthus cooperi, Chaneactis carphoclinia, C. stevioides, Cryptantha angustifolia, C. pterocarya, Erodium cicutarium, Festuca octoflora, Lupinus concinnus, Oenothera californica, Plantago insularis, Platystemon californica, Salvia columbariae, Thelypodium lasiophyllum, and Thysanocarpus curvipes growing on irrigated and non-irrigated plots were exposed in situ to elevated levels of ozone dispensed from an open air exposure system. Plants were exposed intermittently to a gradient of ozone of concentrations ranging between 44 and 133 ppb (nL L?1) for 35 h over a total of 216 h. Only three species were injured by ozone at the highest ozone concentrations. Leaf injury to C. claviformis—2 percent total foliar injury (TFI), C. hirtella—1 percent TFI, and Erodium cicutarium—2 percent TFI, developed at the highest ozone concentrations. Leaf injury to these species was similar on the irrigated and nonirrigated plots. Leaf water potential and stomatal conductance significantly decreased in C. claviformis, and C. hirtella due to water stress but not ozone. Similar trend for net photosynthesis was also determined. The highest water potential and stomatal conductance values as well as the largest differences in water potential between irrigated and non-irrigated plants were found in the morning.  相似文献

The native ground vegetation of a beech forest was fumigated with moderate doses of SO(2), NO(2), and O(3) in open-top chambers. The effects of fumigants on growth and above-ground development were dependent on species. The treatments caused early senescence in several of the species present. The epicuticular waxes were attacked by fumigation, which was shown by higher wettability of the leaf surfaces and by leaching of ions. Interspecific differences were observed in the responses of transpiration and photosynthesis to fumigation. Similar patterns of effects on transpiration and photosynthesis, however, were found in the same species. Carbohydrate metabolism was altered by fumigation, leading to starch accumulation in the leaves. Besides effects on higher plants, fumigations also resulted in alterations of the soil microflora. The bacteria/fungi ratio was depressed at the fumigation plots.  相似文献

Previous workers have shown that simultaneous SO2/NOX removal can be obtained in a dry scrubbing system with Ca(OH)2 promoted by an additive such as NaOH, and that fly ash and product recycle improve the reactivity of the solids toward SO2. To test SO2/NOX removal with fly ash and product recycle, bench-scale experiments with a packed bed reactor were performed at bag filter conditions. The most reactive solid for NOX removal was prepared by slurrying Ca(OH)2 with fly ash, CaSO3, and NaOH. The best conditions for NOX removal were the greatest temperature (125°C) and greatest concentrations of SO2 (1500 ppm) and O2 (20 percent). At the best conditions, NOX removed in 1 hour was 3-4 moles per 100 moles Ca(OH)2, compared to 5-10 moles SO2 removed per 100 moles Ca(OH)2. The best SO2 removal was obtained at the highest relative humidities/lowest temperatures (55% RH/ 65°C) with solids prepared by slurrying Ca(OH)2 with fly ash and NaOH. At these conditions, SO2 removed In 1 hour was 60-80 moles per 100 moles Ca(OH)2, compared to 0.5 to 1 moles NOX removed per 100 moles Ca(OH)2.  相似文献

The influence of dissolved NO2 and iron on the oxidation rate of S(IV) species in the presence of dissolved oxygen is presented. To match the conditions in the real environment, the concentration of iron in the reaction solution and trace gases in the gas mixture was typical for a polluted atmosphere. The time dependence of HSO3, SO42−, NO2 and NO3 and the concentration ratio between Fe(II) and total dissolved iron were monitored. Sulphate formation was the most intensive in the presence of an SO2/NO2/air gas mixture and Fe(III) in solution. The highest contribution to the overall oxidation was from Fe-catalysed S(IV) autoxidation. The reaction rate in the presence of both components was equal to the sum of the reaction rates when NO2 and Fe(III) were present separately, indicating that under selected experimental conditions there exist two systems: SO2/NO2/air and SO2/NO2/air/Fe(III), which are unlikely to interact with each other. The radical chain mechanism can be initiated via reactions Fe(III)–HSO3 and NO2–SO32−/HSO3.  相似文献

The principle of this detector is based on the measurement of the intensity of the ultraviolet fluorescence of SO2 produced by absorption of the Zn 2138 Å or Cd 2288 Å line. The fluorescence intensity was found to be linear from 0.1 to 500 ppm of SO2 in air with the Zn lamp and from 0.1 to 1600 ppm with the Cd lamp. The detection limit at present is about 20 ppb. There is no detectable interference from O3, H2S, NO2, CO2, CO, or H2, although the presence of a large concentration of CS2 (500 times as much as SO2) NO (500 times) or C2H4 (4000 times) interferes with the measurement. The presence of 2% H20 reduces the signal by 25%, while up to 1 % CH4 has almost no effect.  相似文献

Ambient air quality was monitored and analyzed to develop air quality index and its implications for livability and climate change in Dire Dawa, Ethiopia. Using survey research design, 16 georeferenced locations, representing different land uses, were randomly selected and assessed for sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO),volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and meteorological parameters (temperature and relative humidity). The study found mean concentrations across all land uses for SO2 of 0.37 ± 0.08 ppm, NO2 of 0.13 ± 0.17 ppm, CO2 of 465.65 ± 28.63 ppm, CO of 3.35 ± 2.04 ppm, and VOCs of 1850.67 ± 402 ppm. An air quality index indicated that ambient air quality for SO2 was very poor, NO2 ranged from moderate to very poor, whereas CO rating was moderate. Significant positive correlations existed between temperature and NO2, CO2, and CO and between humidity and VOCs. Significant relationships were also recorded between CO2 and NO2 and between CO and CO2. Poor urban planning, inadequate pollution control measure, and weak capacity to monitor air quality have implications for energy usage, air quality, and local meteorological parameters, with subsequent feedback into global climate change. Implementation of programs to monitor and control emissions in order to reduce air pollution will provide health, economic, and environmental benefits to the city.

Implications: The need to develop and implement emission control programs to reduce air pollution in Dire Dawa City is urgent. This will provide enormous economic, health, and environmental benefits. It is expected that economic effects of air quality improvement will offset the expenditures for pollution control. Also, strategies that focus on air quality and climate change present a unique opportunity to engage different stakeholders in providing inclusive and sustainable development agenda for Dire Dawa.  相似文献

Sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) has been widely used as a chemical additive for enhancing nitrogen oxide (NOx; NO + NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and mercury (Hg0) removals in a wet scrubber. However, they are each uniquely dependent on NaClO(aq) pH, hence making the simultaneous control difficult. In order to overcome this weakness, we sprayed low liquid-to-gas (L/G) ratio (0.1 L/Nm3) of NaClO(aq) to vaporize quickly at 165 °C. Results have shown that the maximized NOx, SO2, and Hg0 removals can be achieved at the pH range between 4.0 and 6.0. When NOx and Hg0 coexist with SO2, in addition, their removals are significantly enhanced by reactions with solid and gaseous by-products such as NaClO(s), NaClO2(s), OClO, ClO, and Cl species, originated from the reaction between SO2 and NaClO(aq). We have also demonstrated the feasibility of this approach in the real flue gases of a combustion plant and observed 50%, 80%, and 60% of NOx, SO2, and Hg0 removals, respectively. These findings led us to conclude that the spray of NaClO(aq) at a relatively high temperature at which the sprayed solution can vaporize quickly makes the simultaneous control of NOx, SO2, and Hg0 possible.

Implications: The simple spray of NaClO(aq) at temperatures above 165 °C can cause the simultaneous removal of gaseous NOx, SO2, and Hg0 by its quick vaporization. Their maximized removals are achieved at the pH range between 4.0 and 6.0. NOx and Hg0 removals are also enhanced by gaseous and solid intermediate products generated from the reaction of SO2 with NaClO(aq). The feasibility of this approach has been demonstrated in the real flue gases of a combustion plant.  相似文献

There is an appreciable chemical interaction between SO2 and photochemical smog which depends on the concentration of SO2 and water vapor. The rate of decay of SO2 concentration is greatly increased in the presence of photochemical smog. With 0.75 ppm SO2, a light-scattering aerosol is produced in dry systems and systems at 22 and 55% relative humidity (RH). Aerosol is not observed until after the NO2 peak has been reached and the NO concentration has fallen to a very low value. The formation of aerosol corresponds in time to the region of most rapid decrease in the SO2 profile. In systems at 65% RH or with smaller amounts of SO2, no light scattering is observed, but the percentage of SO2 disappearing is greater. In relatively dry systems the presence of SO2 results in a general slowing down of the photochemical smog reactions. In systems containing water vapor concentrations comparable to those found in the atmosphere, the inhibiting influence of SO2 on the smog reaction is less pronounced. However, the maximum concentration of oxidant produced by the photochemical smog reactions is significantly lower when SO2 is present.  相似文献

SO2 concentrations for two consecutive growing seasons were obtained from an eleven-station monitoring network in a portion of the Ohio River Valley that contains four coal-fired generating stations. Elevated SO2 concentrations occurred at all sites with a diurnal pattern that provided higher frequencies of occurrence between 1100 and 1700 hours. Most episodes with concentrations equal to or greater than 267 μg m−3 (0.1 ppm) were brief, lasting for two hours or less. These episodes rarely occurred on two or more consecutive days. Elevated NOx was associated with elevated SO2. Temporal patterns of SO2 occurrence as well as concentrations and durations of exposures should be duplicated in experiments with annual vegetation species if results are to relate to actual field conditions near sources. Since patterns vary with topography, climate and source-receptor relationships, SO2 exposure patterns in experiments with vegetation should be tailored to the particular region under study.  相似文献

The frequency of co-occurrences for SO2NO2, SO2/O3 and O3/NO2 at rural and remote monitoring sites in the United States was characterized for the months of May-September for the years 1978–1982. Minimum hourly concentrations of 0.03 and 0.05 ppm of each gas were used as the criteria for defining a ‘co-occurrence’. The objectives of this study were to:
  • 1.(1) identify the types of co-occurrence patterns and their frequency;
  • 2.(2) identify whether the frequency of hourly simultaneous co-occurrences increased substantially when the minimum concentration was lowered (e.g. from 0.05 to 0.03 ppm) for each pollutant; and
  • 3.(3) determine whether the frequency of co-occurrences showed large year-to-year variation.
For all pollutant pairs and co-occurrence thresholds (i.e. 0.03 and 0.05 ppm), the frequency of daily and hourly co-occurrences was low for most sites. Year-to-year variability was found to be insignificant; most of the monitoring sites experienced co-occurrences of any type less than 12% of the 153 days. Based on our observations, researchers attempting to assess the potential effects of SO2/NO2, SO2/O3 and O3/NO2 in the United States should construct simulated exposure regimes so that
  • 1.(1) hourly simultaneous and daily simultaneous-only co-occurrences are fairly rare and
  • 2.(2) when co-occurrences are present, complex-sequential and sequential-only co-occurrence patterns predominate.

This paper reports the results of over 2 years of measurements of several of the species comprising atmospheric SOx (=SO2+SO42−) and NOy (=NO+NO2 + PAN + HNO3+NO3+ organicnitrates + HONO + 2N2O5 …) at Whiteface Mountain, New York. Continuous real-time measurements of SO2 and total gaseous NOy provided data for about 50% and 65% of the period, respectively, and 122 filter pack samples were obtained for HNO3, SO2 and aerosol SO42−, NO3, H+ and NH4+. Concentrations of SO2 and NOy were greatest in winter, whereas concentrations of the reaction products SO42− and HNO3were greatest in summer. The seasonal variation in SO42− was considerably more pronounced than that of HNO3and the high concentrations of SO42− aerosol present in summer were also relatively more acidic than SO42− aerosol in other seasons. As a result, SO42− aerosol was the predominant acidic species present in summer, HNO3was predominant in other seasons. Aerosol NO3 concentrations were low in all seasons and appeared unrelated to simultaneous NOy and HNO3concentrations. These data are consistent with seasonal variations in photochemical oxidation rates and with existing data on seasonal variations in precipitation composition. The results of this study suggest that emission reductions targeted at the summer season might be a cost-effective way to reduce deposition of S species, but would not be similarly cost-effective in reducing deposition of N species. kwAcid deposition, seasonal variation, sulfate, nitrate, nitric acid, sulfur dioxide, oxides of nitrogen, hydrogen peroxide, ozone, air pollution, Adirondack Mountains  相似文献

The body of Information presented in this paper is directed to those Individuals concerned with the removal of NOx in combustion flue gases. A catalytic process for the selective reduction of nitrogen oxides by ammonia has been investigated. Efforts were made toward the development of catalysts resistant to SOx poisoning. Nitrogen oxides were reduced over various metal oxide catalysts in the presence or absence of SOx(SO2 and SO3). Catalysts consisting of oxides of base metals (for example, Fe2O3) were easily poisoned by SO3, forming sulfates of the base metals. A series of catalysts which are not susceptible to the SOx poisoning has been developed. The catalysts possess a high activity and selectivity over a wide range of temperatures, 250—450°C. The catalysts were tested in a pilot plant which treated a flue gas containing 110-150 ppm NOx, 660-750 ppm SO2, and 40-90 ppm SO3. The pilot plant was operated at 350°C and at a space velocity of 10,000 h-1. The removal of nitrogen oxides was more than 90% for several months.

A mechanism of the NO-NH3 reaction has also been investigated. It is found that NO reacts with NH3 at a 1:1 mole ratio in the presence of oxygen and the reaction is completely inhibited by the absence of oxygen. The experimental data show that the NO-NH3 reaction in the presence of oxygen is represented byNO + NH3 + 1/4 O2 = N2 + 3/2 H2O.  相似文献

Contribution of pollution from different types of sources in Jamshedpur, the steel city of India, has been estimated in winter 1993 using two approaches in order to delineate and prioritize air quality management strategies for the development of region in an environmental friendly manner. The first approach mainly aims at preparation of a comprehensive emission inventory and estimation of spatial distribution of pollution loads in terms of SO2 and NO2 from different types of industrial, domestic and vehicular sources in the region. The results indicate that industrial sources account for 77% and 68% of the total emissions of SO2 and NO2, respectively, in the region, whereas vehicular emissions contributed to about 28% of the total NO2 emissions. In the second approach, contribution of these sources to ambient air quality levels to which the people are exposed to, was assessed through air pollution dispersion modelling. Ambient concentration levels of SO2 and NO2 have been predicted in winter season using the ISCST3 model. The analysis indicates that emissions from industrial sources are responsible for more than 50% of the total SO2 and NO2 concentration levels. Vehicular activities contributed to about 40% of NO2 pollution and domestic fuel combustion contributed to about 38% of SO2 pollution. Predicted 24-h concentrations were compared with measured concentrations at 11 ambient air monitoring stations and good agreement was noted between the two values. In-depth zone-wise analysis of the above indicates that for effective air quality management, industrial source emissions should be given highest priority, followed by vehicular and domestic sources in Jamshedpur region.  相似文献

Biochemical and physiological experiments were conducted on pea plants (Pisum sativum) continuously exposed in growth chambers to SO2 gas for 18 days. S02 gas concentrations were 0.1, 0.15, and 0.25 ppm. In plants exposed to 0.1 and 0.15 ppm it was clearly demonstrated that there was a greater accumulation of inorganic sulfur, a reduced buffer capacity of the cells relative to H-ions, and a stimulation of glutamate dehydrogenase activity. The only macroscopic symptom seen was slight chlorosis of the older leaves. There was only a slight decrease in fresh and dry weights of these plants compared to the control plants whereas in the group of plants exposed to 0.25 ppm SO2 foliage necrosis was considerable. In addition, there was a marked reduction in the fresh and dry weights of the latter plants. However, the relationship among accumulated inorganic sulfur, reduced buffer capacity, and increased glutamate dehydrogenase activity as seen for the lower S02 concentrations was close. Accordingly, if might be possible to use these three parameters to diagnose S02 injury before any significant symptoms appear. In the case of severe SO2 injury there was a marked increase in glutamine and ammonia concentrations suggesting that these factors in addition to the above could be used in diagnosing severe SO2 injury. There was no significant difference between plants treated with 0.1 or 0.15 ppm SO2 and control plants in the contents of K, Ca, P, and N fractions. Therefore, these factors would not be useful in the early detection of SO2 injury.  相似文献

This study examines gaseous chlorinated species generated from the reaction of sulfur dioxide (SO2) with sodium chlorite powder (NaClO2(s)) to obtain insight into the propensity of this process to enhance NO and Hg0 oxidation. A packed bed reactor containing NaClO2(s) was used and the reaction temperature was set to 130 °C. Initially, we determined that the presence of SO2 enhances the oxidation of NO and Hg0 by reaction with NaClO2(s). We then introduced NO2 into the gas mixture as a radical scavenger and determined that the chlorinated species generated by the reaction of SO2 with NaClO2(s) are OClO, Cl, ClO, and Cl2. Based on these results, we suggest that such gaseous chlorinated ones are responsible for the enhancement of NO and Hg0 oxidation.  相似文献

A number of Investigations have attributed the control of the nasal to oral/nasal ventilation transition to nasal resistance. To investigate possible changes In nasal resistance due to sulfur dioxide (SO2) exposure, 14 subjects (7 men and 7 women), healthy nonsmokers, between the ages of 20 and 46 years, were exposed for 30 minutes to filtered air while free breathing and to 2.0 ppm SO2 with either free breathing, forced oral or forced nasal breathing with continuous exercise at a workload 300 kg>m/min below the workload which Initiated cross-over from nasal to oral/nasal breathing in a preliminary incremental workload test. An Incremental work test under the ambient conditions was performed immediately following the 30-minute exercise to ascertain any change in the cross-over ventilation. Pre- and post-measures of pulmonary functions were obtained to ascertain any changes In these parameters due to the exposure. There was a significant difference in the workload at which cross-over occurred following forced oral breathing in 2.0 ppm sulfur dioxide. The nasal ventilation prior to cross-over and the nasal component of ventilation were significantly smaller for this exposure condition, indicating a possible change in nasal dynamics following the 30 minutes of forced oral breathing in 2.0 ppm SO2. Lack of concomitant changes in pulmonary function tests including airway resistance suggests that breathing 2.0 ppm SO2 does not affect normal subjects whether administration is by free, forced oral or forced nasal breathing.  相似文献

A year-long field study to characterize the ionic species in PM2.5 was carried out in Shanghai and Beijing, China, in 1999–2000. Weekly samples of PM2.5 were collected using a special low flow rate (0.4 l min−1) sampler. In Shanghai, SO42− NO3 and NH4+ were the dominant ionic species, which accounted for 46%, 18% and 17% of the total mass of ions, respectively. Local SO2 emissions were an important source of SO42− in PM2.5 because the SO42− concentration was correlated with the SO2 concentration (r=0.66). The relatively stable SO42−/SO2 mass ratio over a large range of temperatures suggests that gas-phase oxidation of SO2 played a minor role in the formation of SO42−. The sum of SO42− and NO3 was highly correlated with NH4+ (r=0.96), but insufficient ammonium was present to totally neutralize the aerosol. In Beijing, SO42−, NO3 and NH4+ were also the dominant ionic species, constituting 44%, 25% and 16% of the total mass of water-soluble ions, respectively. Local SO2 emissions were an important source of SO42− in the winter since SO42− was correlated with SO2 (r=0.83). The low-mass SO42−/SO2 ratio (0.27) during winter, which had low humidity, suggests that gas-phase oxidation of SO2 was a major route of sulfate formation. In the summer, however, much higher mass ratios of SO42−/SO2 (5.6) were observed and were ascribed to in-cloud sulfate formation. The annual average ratio of NO3/SO42− was 0.4 and 0.6 in Shanghai and in Beijing, respectively, suggesting that stationary emissions were still a dominant source in these two cities.  相似文献

An analysis of air quality data from 1970-1975 in the Los Angeles (LA) Basin has been made with emphasis on factors relevant to high hourly NO2 concentrations, (NO2). Detailed analysis of CO and SO2 air quality and the (NO x )/(CO) and (CO)/(SO2) ratios reveals that high (NO2) result mainly from vehicular sources; contributions from stationary sources to these high (NO2) of greater than 10% occur rarely. Meteorological conditions (very low early-morning inversion base height and low wind speed) favoring the formation of high (NO2) restrict the impact of elevated point NO x sources on the ground level (NO2) during the early to mid-morning hours. The overnight leftover NO x during high NO2 days is shown to originate largely from local sources near the monitoring sites. A regression analysis using NO2, NO x and HC data from downtown LA shows that a 50% reduction in (NO x ) reduces high (NO2) by 40-45%; a 50% reduction in (HC) reduces high (NO2) by 5-10%. The present analysis supports assumptions used in an earlier generalized rollback model that related NO x emissions to high 1-h average (NO2) observed at downtown LA.  相似文献
