Data on visits to New York City metropolitan area hospital emergency rooms for asthmatic attacks were analyzed to identify asthma “events”: days when the number of such visits was unusually high. In the fall season such days tended to occur simultaneously at all hospitals of the study, and thus can be plausibly associated with some environmental agent acting simultaneously throughout the city. Data on sulfur dioxide and particulate concentrations from the 40-station New York City Aerometric Network were used as pollution measures, and a search for a relationship between asthma “events” and air pollution levels on the same day and on the preceding day was made using standard statistical techniques. Presently, the carcinogenicity of polluted air is determined by repeated skin painting or subcutaneous injection of crude organic extracts of atmospheric particulates in adult mice. In general such techniques are not ideal, inasmuch as large amounts of extracts are required to produce significant yields of local tumors, and these may take one to two years to develop. A photodynamic bioassay for poly cyclic atmospheric pollutants, based on the previous demonstration of a positive and significant association between high photodynamic activity and carcinogenicity in a large series of polycxjclics, has been developed in an attempt to provide a simple and rapid, but presumptive, indirect index of carcinogenicity attributable to polycyclic compounds. Photodynamic activity, measured with Paramecium caudatum, was found to vary widely between organic extracts, and even more widely between 6 eluted fractions thereof, from over 100 different sources in the U.S.A. Additionally, the carcinogenicity of organic extracts of atmospheric pollutants has been directly measured with newborn mice, based on the well-known enhanced response cf neonates to a variety of defined chemical carcinogens. Mice were injected subcutaneously with extracts at doses of 55 mg or less, fractionally administered in the first 21 days of life. A high incidence of pulmonary adenomas, and hepatomas, and a lower incidence of lymphomas developed over a period from 12 to 50 weeks. Current correlative evaluation with chemical and other data indicates the practical utility of both assays for carcinogenic air pollutants.  相似文献

Córdoba, as well as many other Latin American cities, is facing problems concerning air pollution. The increase in the number of cars, the poor control on emissions and the little use of catalytic converters, produce a great amount of toxic gases and particulate. Many cities have started air quality measurement programs being the size of the network strongly dependent on the available funds. In 1995, Córdoba started a measurement campaign with two mobile stations. A major part of the city has been characterized, mostly the city center and the suburban zone. Lack of data at the prevailing wind direction is the major shortcoming, but this is mainly a political decision. In this work, we review the air quality measurements performed, and we attempt to explain the causes for the low ozone values found.  相似文献

A study of total suspended particulate (TSP) levels in Canberra has been carried out using light microscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and microprobe analysis. A significant source of the fine particulates as well as the greater part of black amorphous particles > 2 μm in city centre samples has been traced by TEM observation to be car emissions. In the suburban site of Kambah TEM displayed charcoal in the black amorphous particles. Further studies using microprobe analysis have shown Pb-Br content in all the fine particulates in the city samples whereas none have been detected in Kambah due to their low concentrations (the presence of small amounts of high electron-dense crystals was visible in TEM observations of Kambah samples). However, high Pb concentrations at both sites correlate well with the fine fraction, indicating that care needs to be taken in interpreting the microprobe results. A strong positive correlation exists between high H/C atomic ratios and the presence of partly burned hydrocarbons containing embedded lead as observed in electron microscopy and microprobe analysis, and between low H/C atomic ratios and the presence of charcoal visible in TEM. For the organic particles from natural sources seasonal peaks of pollen, fungal remains and plant tissue are evident in both localities. Particles of mineral or crustal source form similar peaks in samples from both localities, probably reflecting dry windy conditions. A comparison between TSP results and microscopic results reveals serious problems with using TSP standards as measures of respirable health effects.  相似文献

A three-dimensional dispersion model has been implemented over the urban area of Stockholm (35×35 km) to assess the spatial distribution of number concentrations of particles in the diameter range 3–400 nm. Typical number concentrations in the urban background of Stockholm is 10 000 cm−3, while they are three times higher close to a major highway outside the city and seven times higher within a densely trafficked street canyon site in the city center. The model, which includes an aerosol module for calculating the particle number losses due to coagulation and dry deposition, has been run for a 10-day period. Model results compare well with measured data, both in levels and in temporal variability. Coagulation was found to be of little importance in terms of time averaged concentrations, contributing to losses of only a few percent as compared to inert particles, while dry deposition yield particle number losses of up to 25% in certain locations. Episodic losses of up to 10% due to coagulation and 50% due to deposition, are found some kilometers downwind of major roads, rising in connection with low wind speed and suppressed turbulent mixing. Removal due to coagulation and deposition will thus be more significant for the simulation of extreme particle number concentrations during peak episodes.The study shows that dispersion models with proper aerosol dynamics included may be used to assess particle number concentrations in Stockholm, where ultrafine particles principally originate from traffic emissions. Emission factors may be determined from roadside measurements, but ambient temperature must be considered, as it has a strong influence on particle number emissions from vehicles.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Incidence of amphibian deformities have increased in recent years, especially in the northern region of the United States. While many factors have been proposed as being responsible for generating deformities (e.g., contaminants, ultraviolet radiation [UV], parasites), no single cause has been definitively established. METHODS: To determine whether waterborne chemicals are responsible for amphibian deformities in ponds in north-central Minnesota, we deployed semipermeable membrane devices (SPMDs) in an impacted and a reference site to accumulate lipophilic contaminants. We then exposed native tadpoles (northern leopard frogs; Rana pipiens) to the SPMD extracts combined with two agricultural pesticides (atrazine, carbaryl) at two levels of UV radiation. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: UV radiation alone caused a slight increase in hatching success and tadpole growth rate. Deformity rate among hatchlings was high following exposure to SPMD extracts from the reference site in the absence of UV, suggesting that chemicals present at this site are broken down by UV to less harmful forms, or become less bioavailable. Conversely, impacted site SPMD extracts caused hatchling deformities only in the presence of UV, suggesting that UV potentiates the teratogenicity of the compounds present there. Impacted site SPMD extracts significantly increased the number of bony triangles among metamorphs, a common deformity observed at this site. The incidence of skin webbings increased significantly with SPMD extracts from both sites as well as with our pesticide control containing atrazine and carbaryl alone. CONCLUSIONS: Higher deformity rates among tadpoles reared in the presence of UV radiation and SPMD extracts from sites where deformities are common indicates a chemical compound (or compounds) in the water at this site may be causing the deformities. RECOMMENDATIONS AND OUTLOOK: It is important to examine the effects of chemical stressors in the presence of other natural stressors (e.g., UV radiation) to gain a better understanding of how multiple stressors work to impact amphibians and amphibian populations.  相似文献

Particulate emission from diesel engines is one of the most important pollutants in urban areas. As a result, particulate emission control from urban bus diesel engines using particle filter technology is being evaluated at several locations in the US. A project entitled "Clean Diesel Air Quality Demonstration Program" has been initiated by the New York City Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) under the supervision of New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and with active participation from Johnson Matthey, Corning, Equilon, Environment Canada and RAD Energy. Under this program, several MTA transit buses with DDC Series 50 engines were equipped with Continuously Regenerating Technology (CRTTM) particulate filter systems and have been operated with ultra low sulfur diesel (<30 ppm S) in transit service in Manhattan since February 2000. These buses were evaluated over a 9-month period for durability and maintainability of the particulate filter. In addition, an extensive emissions testing program was carried out using transient cycles on a chassis dynamometer to evaluate the emissions reductions obtained with the particle filter. In this paper, the emissions testing data from the Clean Diesel Air Quality Demonstration Program are discussed in detail.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

A tunable infrared laser differential absorption spectrometer (TILDAS) was used to remotely sense the nitric oxide (NO) emissions from 1,473 on-road vehicles. The real-world measurement precision of this instrument in the limit of low NO concentration is 5 ppm of the vehicle exhaust, which corresponds to a 3o detection limit of 15 ppm. Our analysis of the distribution of negative concentration measurements produced during this experiment supports this claim, showing that the instrumental noise for this set of measurements was at most 8 ppm in the limit of low NO concentration. The high sensitivity of this instrument allowed us to measure the NO emissions of even the cleanest vehicles. The measured vehicle fleet NO emissions closely fit a gamma distribution with 10% of the fleet contributing about 50% of the total fleet emissions. Newer vehicles had lower NO emissions than older ones, but high NO emitters were found in every vehicle age cohort. On a vehicle-by-vehicle basis, NO emissions correlated very weakly with vehicle velocity, acceleration, power per unit mass, carbon monoxide (CO) emissions, and hydrocarbon (HC) emissions. High NO emitting vehicles could not be identified by remote sensing of CO or HC emissions and vice versa. When we compared the NO emissions for 117 vehicles measured more than one time, about half of the high NO emitters were found to be very consistent, while the other half varied significantly.  相似文献

In this work we present a detailed study of atmospheric PM10 pollution in Andalusia (Southern Spain) based on geochemical maps. The study includes determination of PM10 levels and bulk chemical composition with samples from 17 representative monitoring stations (rural, urban background, traffic hot spot, and urban zones with industrial influence) during 2007. The knowledge of background levels and concentrations of relevant chemical compounds and elements allows the quantification of the main sources of pollution in relevant cities and sites of ecological interest.In comparison to other stations in Spain and mainland Europe, PM10 in Andalusia is characterized by high levels of crustal matter and secondary inorganic components (SIC). This has been attributed to the following causes: 1) High road traffic and industrial emissions, 2) High frequency of North African air mass outbreaks contributing between 3 and 4 μg m?3 in western Andalusia and 4–7 μg m?3 in eastern Andalusia, and 3) Climate factors such as low rainfall, dry soils favouring resuspension, and high photochemical activity.Atmospheric particulate matter in urban areas located in the vicinity of industrial estates is enriched in secondary inorganic compounds and metals. Three main hot spots have been identified according their high trace element concentrations: Huelva (As, Cu, Zn, Se, and Bi), Strait of Gibraltar (V, Ni, Cr, and Co) and Bailén (V and Ni). The transport of pollutants from cities and industrial estates to areas of ecological interest (e.g. Doñana National Park) has been found to cause the increase in background levels in a number of trace elements (e.g. As) in the air. An important outcome of this study is that geochemical maps of atmospheric matter are a powerful tool for illustrating spatial variation patterns of geochemical components and identifying specific pollution hot spots.  相似文献

Since 1990s, a systematic program to measure air toxics has been active in New York State with monitors located both in urban and rural areas. In this study we examined the spatial and temporal characteristics of benzene, a known human carcinogen that is emitted by many source categories. The analysis indicates that ambient concentration levels of benzene have decreased by as much as 60% over this period not only in the ozone non-attainment area of New York City that had the reformulated gas (RFG) requirements, but also over the rest of the state as well. Although the rate of decrease appears to have flattened out in recent years, the annual average concentration levels are found to be above the health risk threshold even at the remote location, Whiteface Mountain, suggesting the need for further reductions in benzene emissions.  相似文献

Traffic has long been recognized as the major contributor to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emissions to the urban atmosphere. Stationary combustion sources, including residential space heating systems, are also a major contributor to PAH emissions. The aim of this study was to determine the profile and concentration of PAHs in stack flue gas emissions from different kinds of space heaters in order to increase the understanding of the scale of the PAH pollution problem caused by this source. This study set out to first assess the characteristics of PAHs and their corresponding benzo[a]pyrene equivalent emissions from a few types of domestic heaters and central heating systems to the urban atmosphere. The study, enabled for the first time, the characterization of PAHs in stationary combustion sources in the city of Damascus, Syria. Nine different types of heating systems were selected with respect to age, design, and type of fuel burned. The concentrations of 15 individual PAH compounds in the stack flue gas were determined in the extracts of the collected samples using high-performance liquid chromatography system (HPLC) equipped with ultraviolet–visible and fluorescence detectors. In general, older domestic wood stoves caused considerably higher PAH emissions than modern domestic heaters burning diesel oil. The average concentration of ΣPAH (sum of 15 compounds) in emissions from all types of studied heating systems ranged between 43?±?0.4 and 316?±?1.4 μg/m3. Zhuhai, a relatively less developed city on the western coast of the Pearl River Delta (PRD) of China, is planning to undergo major development in coming years. A Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge project has been approved by the Central Government of China. The project will have great impact on the driving pattern and vehicular emissions to the city. This baseline study collected speed-time data of two instrumented private cars in morning and evening periods, as well as a daytime nonpeak period of >10 consecutive days in the spring and winter of 2003. The authors used the microwave speed sensor and global positioning system installed in the instrumented cars and used car-chasing technique to perform the data collection. They used the statistical package SPSS to assess the consistency, as well as to evaluate the variability of the data. Nine parameters, namely, average speed, average running speed, average acceleration rate, average deceleration rate, mean length of a driving period, time proportions of driving modes, average number of acceleration-deceleration changes, root mean square acceleration, and positive acceleration kinetic energy are calculated to represent the driving characteristics. A driving cycle for private cars was developed. If emission tests were conducted using the Zhuhai driving cycle, the level of vehicle emissions measured is likely to be in between that of the Federal Test Procedure (FTP) cycle and the Melbourne Peak cycle.  相似文献

Exposure to environmental pollutants is known to be harmful to health, in general, and to lungs in particular. In this respect, traffic police are at particular risk due to the nature of their job, since they are exposed to emissions from the vehicles. Here, we show that in the traffic police of Hyderabad city, India, the plasma levels of lipid peroxides are high, whereas the concentrations of the nitric oxide are low. In addition, the levels of various antioxidants in the RBC lysate such as catalase, superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase were found to be low with no significant alteration in plasma ceruloplasmin levels. These results suggest that exposure to air pollutants, a major portion of which is due to emissions from the vehicles, can increase oxidant stress, decrease the levels of antioxidants and nitric oxide. This imbalance in the oxidant/antioxidant system may lead to lung damage and is likely to cause respiratory problems in individuals exposed to air pollution.  相似文献

Non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHCs) are known to have an important role on air quality due to their high reactivity. NMHC analysis has been performed on 148 ambient air samples collected at five different sites in the Kanto area (Tokyo metropolitan area and surrounding six prefectures) of Japan in summer and winter of 2008, and fifty NMHCs have been determined and quantified. A field measurement campaign has been conducted at one of the busiest intersections in Tokyo metropolitan area in winter of 2008. NMHC emissions are evaluated through comparison of distributions of individual NMHCs emitted from motor vehicles, which are estimated from the measurements, with those determined from the current emissions inventory. The comparison revealed that the measured distributions of acetylene, ethylene and toluene showed a good agreement with those estimated from the emissions inventory (the values estimated from the measurements are a factor of 1.5, 0.56 and 2.3 larger than the emissions inventory in median, respectively), however, propane and isobutane are found to be significantly underestimated in the emissions inventory (the measured values were a factor of 18 and 5.1 larger than the emissions inventory, respectively). The significant underestimate of propane can be explained by that the current emissions inventory does not consider emissions from liquefied propane gas (LPG) fueled vehicles. However, for isobutane, reasons for the underestimate are still unclear. Another field measurement has been conducted in summer of 2008, where the air samples have been collected at three different sites on the ground and by a helicopter as well. Remarkable high concentrations of 1-butene and cis- and trans-2-butenes have been sporadically observed in the samples collected at Urayasu in the coastal area of Tokyo bay. Calculated propylene equivalent (PE) concentrations of butenes revealed that those have a significantly important role in ozone formation when the air plume is affected by emissions from their emission sources. The PE concentrations of butenes varied from 0.1 to 39 ppbC, and accounted for 1.5–75% of total PE concentrations at Urayasu. Most of the continuous air quality monitoring stations does not record concentrations of individual hydrocarbons, therefore, the importance of reactive and low concentration hydrocarbon such as butenes might be overlooked in the current emissions inventory and/or air quality model. In this paper, the reliability of NMHC emissions is evaluated based on the field measurements. Their possible impacts on air quality in the Kanto area are discussed as well, based on the calculated propylene equivalent concentrations.  相似文献

An accurate estimate of the magnitude of biogenic volatile organic compound (BVOC) emissions in California's airsheds is critical for formulating effective strategies to reduce concentrations of fine particles, ozone, and other secondary air pollutants which affect human health and reduce yields of agricultural crops. However, California's natural and urban landscapes contain more than 6000 species, and the BVOC emissions from only a small fraction of these species have been characterized by quantitative measurements. A taxonomic method has been proposed to assign BVOC emission rate measurements to unmeasured species, but data are needed for additional plant families and genera to further develop and test this taxonomic approach. In the present study, BVOC emissions from more than 250 plant species were measured through a semi-quantitative method employing calibrated portable analyzers with photoionization detectors (PID). Replicate samples of live foliage were placed in plastic bags, in both light and darkened conditions, and the BVOC emissions categorized as low, medium or high. To validate our approach, for 63 plant species we compared our PID-measured BVOC emissions with published values, based on gas chromatography (GC) or GC–mass spectrometry, and found them to be well correlated. The method employed was more suited for detecting compounds with relatively higher emission rates, such as isoprene, than compounds with low emission rates, which could include monoterpenes and oxygenated compounds. For approximately 200 plant species not previously measured, the results provide further evidence that plant taxonomy can serve as a useful guide for generalizing the emissions behavior of many, but not all, plant families and genera.  相似文献

Exhaust gas particle and ion size distributions were measured from an off-road diesel engine complying with the European Stage IIIB emission standard. The measurements were performed at idling and low load conditions on an engine dynamometer. Nucleation-mode particles dominated the diesel exhaust particle number emissions at idle load. The nonvolatile nucleation-mode geometric mean diameter was detected at 10 nm or below. The nonvolatile nucleation-mode charge state implied that it has evolved through a highly ionizing environment before emission from the engine. The determined charging probabilities were 10.0 ± 2.2% for negative and 8.0 ± 2.0% for positive polarity particles. The nonvolatile nucleation particle concentration and size was also shown to be dependent on the lubricant oil composition. The particle emissions were efficiently controlled with a partial filter or with partial filter + selective catalytic reduction (SCR) combination. The particle number removal efficiencies of the aftertreatment systems were over 95% for wet total particle number (>3nm) and over 85% for dry particle total number. Nevertheless, the aftertreatment systems’ efficiencies were around 50% for the soot-mode particles. The low-load nonvolatile nucleation particle emissions were also dependent on the engine load, speed, and fuel injection pressure. The low load particle number emissions followed the soot-core trade-off, similar to medium or high operating loads.
Implications:Idling and low-load diesel engine exhaust emissions affect harmfully the ambient air quality. The low-load particle number emissions are here shown to peak in the 10-nm size range for a modern off-road engine. The particles are electrically charged and nonvolatile and they originate from the combustion process. Tailpipe particle control by open channel filter can remove more than 85% of the nonvolatile 10-nm particles and about 50% of the soot-mode particles, while the fuel injection pressure increase can lead to particle number increase. The study provides a new viewpoint for low-load particle emissions and control.  相似文献

Estimates indicate that approximately 2.6% of the total atmospheric pollution in this country may originate as a result of refuse disposal. Although this may appear to be a comparatively low figure, it is important to note that refuse disposal is a universal problem: wherever we go, be the area urban, or rural, waste must be disposed of and in most cases the methods of disposal produce air pollution. Tabulated data indicates that the per capita rate of production has been increasing annually. In the city of Hartford, the quantity of refuse that is being burned in the municipal incinerator has been increasing at a rate of 5%/year. A comparison of the air pollutants emitted from open burning at a refuse disposal area, backyard burning and incineration of refuse in a municipal multiple chamber incinerator indicates that the quantity of pollutants emitted from the latter source is much less than those emitted from the other sources. The effect of having legislation with, enforcement authority and a program for regular inspections, has resulted in marked improvements of refuse disposal operations in Connecticut since June, 1966. Most of the burning still being done at refuse disposal areas is limited to only brush and demolition material. A multi-purpose incinerator is presently under construction in the city of Stamford, Conn. It is planned to demonstrate that not only bulky wastes and auto bodies, but also liquid wastes can be burned in the same unit without creating any adverse effect on the environment. This incinerator will be provided with an electrostatic precipitator for removing particulate emissions.

New methods of refuse disposal which are being tried are briefly described in this paper. All these methods tend to reduce or eliminate air pollution along with eliminating the health hazards normally related with open face dump type of operations.

The continual technological progress and improvements in methods of manufacture, packaging, and marketing of consumer products along with the economic, population, and industrial growth of the nation has resulted in an ever-mounting increase and change in the characteristics of the mass of material being discarded by the purchaser. In May 1967, a Three-State Conference on Air Resource Management was held at the City College of the City University of New York. This conference consisted of a number of panels or committees which discussed specialized areas of the problem of air pollution and its control. Emissions from a cereal straw through-burning furnace have been characterized by chemical analysis and the Ames Salmonella/microsome assay. The emissions of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) were considerable, from 24 to 64 mg per kilo dry fuel. Most of the mutagenic activity was found in the extracts of the particles, while the condensate fractions and the XAD-2 extracts showed much lower mutagenic responses.  相似文献

The history of mercury emissions from fuel combustion in Maritime Canada   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
In this study, we present an inventory of historical emissions of mercury resulting from combustion of wood, coal and refined petroleum products in Maritime Canada. The pattern of emissions illustrates the strong influences of population growth, industrial development and prevailing fuel preferences in the region. According to our calculations, anthropogenic mercury releases from fuel combustion in Maritime Canada have cumulatively totaled more than 50 tonnes since 1800. We have compiled both high and low estimates of annual mercury releases in this region. Mercury emissions from fuel combustion in Maritime Canada reached a maximum level in the 1940s. At this time, emissions were between 778 (low) and 1494 (high) kg per year, coinciding with the period of most intensive coal use in Maritime Canada. In 1995, emissions were approximately 54% of the level reached in 1940, at 427 (low)-800 (high) kg per year. In presenting this emissions inventory, we hope to refine past estimates with current information on the mercury content of different fuel types, and create a comprehensive database on how mercury emissions from various sources have changed over time.  相似文献

Urban aerosol was collected in a summer and a winter campaign for 7 and 3 days, respectively. Low volume samples were taken with a time resolution of 160 min using a filter/sorption cartridge system extended by an ozone scrubber. Concentrations of mainly particle associated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and oxidised PAH (O-PAH) were determined by gas chromatography/high resolution mass spectrometry. The sampling site was located in the city centre of Augsburg, Germany, near major roads with high traffic volume. The daily concentrations and profiles were mainly governed by local emissions from traffic and domestic heating, as well as by the meteorological conditions. During the winter campaign, concentrations were more than 10 fold higher than during the summer campaign. Highest concentrations were found concurrent with low boundary layer heights and low wind speeds. Significant diurnal variation of the PAH profiles was observed. Enhanced influences of traffic related PAH on the PAH profiles were evident during daytime in summer, whereas emissions from hot water generation and domestic heating were obvious during the night time of both seasons. A general idea about the global meteorological situation was acquired using back trajectory calculations (NOAA ARL HYSPLIT4). Due to high local emissions in combination with low air exchange during the two sampling campaigns, effects of mesoscale transport were not clearly observable.  相似文献
