A thermal/optical carbon analyzer (TOA), normally used for quantification of organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) in PM2.5 (fine particulate matter) speciation networks, was adapted to direct thermally evolved gases to an electron impact quadrupole mass spectrometer (QMS), creating a TOA-QMS. This approach produces spectra similar to those obtained by the Aerodyne aerosol mass spectrometer (AMS), but the ratios of the mass to charge (m/z) signals differ and must be remeasured using laboratory-generated standards. Linear relationships are found between TOA-QMS signals and ammonium (NH4+), nitrate (NO3?), and sulfate (SO42-) standards. For ambient samples, however, positive deviations are found for SO42-, compensated by negative deviations for NO3?, at higher concentrations. This indicates the utility of mixed-compound standards for calibration or separate calibration curves for low and high ion concentrations. The sum of the QMS signals across all m/z after removal of the NH4+, NO3?, and SO42- signals was highly correlated with the carbon content of oxalic acid (C?H?O?) standards. For ambient samples, the OC derived from the TOA-QMS method was the same as the OC derived from the standard IMPROVE_A TOA method. This method has the potential to reduce complexity and costs for speciation networks, especially for highly polluted urban areas such as those in Asia and Africa.

Implications: Ammonium, nitrate, and sulfate can be quantified by the same thermal evolution analysis applied to organic and elemental carbon. This holds the potential to replace multiple parallel filter samples and separate laboratory analyses with a single filter and a single analysis to account for a large portion of the PM2.5 mass concentration.  相似文献

Abstract

Air pollutants were collected in Logan, Cache County, UT, in February 1993 during two periods of atmospheric inversion accompanied by fog. The following atmospheric species were determined: (1) gaseous SO2, NO2 (semi-quantitatively),HNO3, NH3, and HF; (2) fine particulate SO4 =, NO3 -, NH4 +, F–, H+, C, Si, S, K, Ca, Ti, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Pb, Se, Br, and Sr, and; (3) fine particulate mass, which was calculated. The major components of fine particulate matter were carbonaceous material, ammonium nitrate, and ammonium sulfate, while the soil component was small. Calculated, fine particulate mass averaged 80 μg/m3 and reached concentrations as high as 120 μg/m3. SO2/Sox and NO2/NOy mole ratios generally varied between 0.2 and 0.1 during inversions. These ratios also showed moderate but consistent diurnal patterns. The emission inventory for Cache County indicates sources of SO2 and NOx but not significant amounts of primary sulfate and nitrate. The observations reported here indicate there is significant conversion of SO2 and NOx in the presence of excess oxidants to sulfuric and nitric acid that are neutralized by excess ammonia.  相似文献

Abstract

This paper presents measurements of daily sampling of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and its major chemical components at three urban and one rural locations in North Carolina during 2002. At both urban and rural sites, the major insoluble component of PM2.5 is organic matter, and the major soluble components are sulfate (SO4 2?), ammonium (NH4 +), and nitrate (NO3 ?). NH4 + is neutralized mainly by SO4 2? rather than by NO3 ?, except in winter when SO4 2? concentration is relatively low, whereas NO3 ? concentration is high. The equivalent ratio of NH4 + to the sum of SO4 2? and NO3 ? is <1, suggesting that SO4 2?and NO3 ?are not completely neutralized by NH4 +. At both rural and urban sites, SO4 2?concentration displays a maximum in summer and a minimum in winter, whereas NO3 ?displays an opposite seasonal trend. Mass ratio of NO3 ? to SO4 2?is consistently <1 at all sites, suggesting that stationary source emissions may play an important role in PM2.5 formation in those areas. Organic carbon and elemental carbon are well correlated at three urban sites although they are poorly correlated at the agriculture site. Other than the daily samples, hourly samples were measured at one urban site. PM2.5 mass concen trations display a peak in early morning, and a second peak in late afternoon. Back trajectory analysis shows that air masses with lower PM2.5 mass content mainly originate from the marine environment or from a continental environment but with a strong subsidence from the upper troposphere. Air masses with high PM2.5 mass concentrations are largely from continental sources. Our study of fine particulate matter and its chemical composition in North Carolina provides crucial information that may be used to determine the efficacy of the new National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS) for PM fine. Moreover, the gas-to-particle conversion processes provide improved prediction of long-range transport of pollutants and air quality.  相似文献

Animal feeding operations (AFOs) produce particulate matter (PM) and gaseous pollutants. Investigation of the chemical composition of PM2.5 inside and in the local vicinity of AFOs can help to understand the impact of the AFO emissions on ambient secondary PM formation. This study was conducted on a commercial egg production farm in North Carolina. Samples of PM2.5 were collected from five stations, with one located in an egg production house and the other four located in the vicinity of the farm along four wind directions. The major ions of NH4+, Na+, K+, SO42?, Cl?, and NO3? were analyzed using ion chromatography (IC). In the house, the mostly abundant ions were SO42?, Cl?, and K+. At ambient stations, SO42?, and NH4+ were the two most abundant ions. In the house, NH4+, SO42?, and NO3? accounted for only 10% of the PM2.5 mass; at ambient locations, NH4+, SO42?, and NO3? accounted for 36–41% of the PM2.5 mass. In the house, NH4+ had small seasonal variations indicating that gas-phase NH3 was not the only major force driving its gas–particle partitioning. At the ambient stations, NH4+ had the highest concentrations in summer. In the house, K+, Na+, and Cl? were highly correlated with each other. In ambient locations, SO42? and NH4+ had a strong correlation, whereas in the house, SO42? and NH4+ had a very weak correlation. Ambient temperature and solar radiation were positively correlated with NH4+ and SO42?. This study suggests that secondary PM formation inside the animal house was not an important source of PM2.5. In the vicinity, NH3 emissions had greater impact on PM2.5 formation.
ImplicationsThe chemical composition of PM2.5 inside and in the local vicinity of AFOs showed the impact of the AFO emissions on ambient secondary PM2.5 formation, and the fate and transport of air pollutants associated with AFOs. The results may help to manage in-house animal facility air quality, and to develop regional air quality control strategies and policies, especially in animal agriculture-concentrated areas.  相似文献

Air pollutants are associated with adverse respiratory effects mainly in susceptible groups. This study was designed to assess the impact of the ionic composition of particulate matter on asthmatic respiratory functions in São Paulo city. From May to July 2002, fine and coarse particulate matter fractions were collected and their respective chemical composition with respect to major ions (Na+, Mg2+, K+, Ca2+, NH4+, Cl, NO3 and SO42−) were determined in each aqueous-extract fraction. The results showed predominant concentrations of SO42− (48.4%), NO3 (19.6%) and NH4+ (12.5%) in the fine fraction, whereas NO3 (35.3%), SO42− (29.1%), Ca2+ (13.1%) and Cl (12.5%) were the predominant species in the coarse fraction. The association between the chemical components of both fractions and the daily peak expiratory flow (PEF) measurements (morning and evening) of the 33 asthmatic individuals were assessed through a linear mixed-effects model. The results showed a significant negative correlation (decrease of PEF) between morning PEF and coarse chloride (3-day moving average) and between evening PEF and coarse Na+ (3-day moving average), coarse Mg2+ (3-day moving average) and coarse NH4+ (2- and 3-day moving average). A significant negative correlation has also been observed between morning and evening PEF and Mg2+ in the fine fraction. These results suggest that some particle chemical constituents may increase the responsiveness of airways and that coarse particles that deposit in the upper airways may be more relevant for asthmatic response and irritation. However, the results do not prove a clear causal relationship.  相似文献

The sampling and chemical analysis of the ambient aerosol collected in Denver, CO, for a 40-day period during November and December, 1978 are described in this report. Parameters included 12-hr TSP measurements, 24-hr respirable and inhalable mass measurements, and 4-hr measurements of mass and chemical species (NO3?, SO4 =, NH4 +, organic and elemental carbon as well as 13 chemical elements) in two size fractions i.e., less than 2.5 μm diameter (fine fraction) and larger than 2.5 μm diameter (coarse fraction). On the basis of the chemical analyses, it was possible to account for all particulate mass in both size fractions. In the fine fraction, the major constituents were organic carbon (21.6%), NH4NO3 (20.0%), elemental carbon (15.3%), (NH4)2SO4 (13.6%), and the remainder consisted primarily of soil-like material, lead salts, and adsorbed water. Three quarters of the coarse fraction consisted of soil-like material, with the remainder composed of the same species that dominated the fine fraction.  相似文献

Abstract

Deployment of continuous analyzers in the Southeastern Aerosol Research and Characterization Study (SEARCH) network began in 1998 and continues today as new technologies are developed. Measurement of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) mass is performed using a dried, 30 °C tapered element oscillating microbalance (TEOM). TEOM measurements are complemented by observations of light scattering by nephelometry. Measurements of major constituents include: (1) SO4 2? via reduction to SO2; (2) NH4 + and NO3 ? via respective catalytic oxidation and reduction to NO, (3) black carbon (BC) by optical absorption, (4) total carbon by combustion to CO2, and (5) organic carbon by difference between the latter two measurements. Several illustrative examples of continuous data from the SEARCH network are presented. A distinctive composite annual average diurnal pattern is observed for PM2.5 mass, nitrate, and BC, likely indicating the influence of traffic-related emissions, growth, and break up of the boundary layer and formation of ammonium nitrate. Examination of PM2.5 components indicates the need to better understand the continuous composition of the unmeasured “other” category, because it contributes a significant fraction to total mass during periods of high PM2.5 loading. Selected episodes are presented to illustrate applications of SEARCH data. An SO2 conversion rate of 0.2%/hr is derived from an observation of a plume from a coal-fired power plant during early spring, and the importance of local, rural sources of NH3 to the formation of ammonium nitrate in particulate matter (PM) is demonstrated.  相似文献

The annular denuder system (ADS) was used to characterize seasonal variations of acidic air pollutants in Seoul, South Korea. Fifty- four 24 h samples were collected over four seasons from October 1996 to September 1997. The annual mean concentrations of HNO3, HNO2, SO2 and NH3 in the gas phase were 1.09, 4.51, 17.3 and 4.34 μg m-3, respectively. The annual mean concentrations of PM2.5(dp≤2.5 μm in aerodynamic diameter, 50% cutoff), SO2-4, NO-3 and NH+4 in the particulate phase were 56.9, 8.70, 5.97 and 4.19 μg m-3, respectively. All chemical species monitored from this study showed statistical seasonal variations. Nitric acid (HNO3) and ammonia (NH3) exhibited substantially higher concentrations during the summer, while nitrous acid (HNO2) and sulfur dioxide(SO2) were higher during the winter. Concentrations of PM2.5, SO2-4, NO-3 and NH+4 in the particulate phase were higher during the winter months. SO2-4, NO-3 and NH+4 accounted for 26–38% of PM2.5. High correlations were found among PM2.5, SO2-4, NO-3 and NH+4. The mean H+ concentration measured only in the fall was 5.19 nmole m-3.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

A thermodynamic equilibrium model was used to investigate the response of aerosol NO3 to changes in concentrations of HNO3, NH3, and H2SO4. Over a range of temperatures and relative humidities (RHs), two parameters provided sufficient information for indicating the qualitative response of aerosol NO3. The first was the excess of aerosol NH4 + plus gas-phase NH3 over the sum of HNO3, particulate NO3, and particulate SO4 2- concentrations. The second was the ratio of particulate to total NO3 concentrations. Computation of these quantities from ambient measurements provides a means to rapidly analyze large numbers of samples and identify cases in which inorganic aerosol NO3 formation is limited by the availability of NH3. Example calculations are presented using data from three field studies. The predictions of the indicator variables and the equilibrium model are compared.  相似文献

Airborne gaseous and particulate matter in winter was measured over for 37 days in January and December 1997 at 2 sampling sites in northern Kyushu, Japan. One sampling site, Goto Island (an isolated island in the East China Sea), was about 200 km southwest of the other sampling site, Dazaifu city. In winter, acidic sulfates generated over the East Asian continent were transported to northwest Kyushu, to places such as Goto Island and the inland Kyushu area, and high sulfate concentrations were observed at the 2 sampling sites when strong NW winds blew. Acidity around Goto was mainly influenced by particulate NH4HSO4. The concentrations of NH3 at Goto Island were lower than at Dazaifu city. The difference in NH3 levels at the 2 sampling sites plays an important role in the chemical forms and sizes of the particulate matter. Nitrates at Goto Island were mostly present as NaNO3 and Ca(NO3)2 in coarse-size particles. During the process of long-range transport of air pollutants from the Asian continent to Goto, gaseous HNO3 was produced by a photochemical reactions of nitrogen oxides in the atmosphere, and particulate NaNO3 and gaseous HCl were formed by a chlorine-loss reaction between NaCl and gaseous HNO3. When strong NW winds blew, acidic sulfates together with some of the NaNO3 and/or Ca(NO3)2 and some of gaseous HCl and HNO3, which exist in the sea to the west of Kyushu and Goto Island, were transported to inland Kyushu such as Dazaifu city. During the process of transport, most of the acidic sulfates and acidic gases were mixed with regional air pollutants such as chlorides and nitrates existing around Dazaifu city, and neutralized forming (NH4)2SO4, NH4Cl and NH4NO3 in an environment of excess NH3. Therefore, the main chemical forms of NO3 at Dazaifu city varied day-by-day from fine-sized NH4NO3 to coarse-sized NaNO3 and/or Ca(NO3)2. The appearance of NO3 in coarse-size particles at Dazaifu city was due to the transport of NO3 from around the sea to the west of Kyushu.  相似文献

Cloud water investigations have been performed at the highest elevation of Central Germany in 1997. Results of extensive trace element measurements are presented. Besides conductivity, pH, liquid water content and major ions the data set includes 49 minor and trace elements. Estimation of crustal enrichment factors (EFs) provides an indication of the anthropogenic contributions to the cloud water concentrations. The variation of cloud composition with time has been illustrated for two selected events with different air mass origins. The chemical composition of the cloud condensation nuclei on which the droplets grow mainly determines the cloud water chemistry. For a cloud event in June 1997 the concentrations of the crustally derived elements Si, Al, Fe, Ti, Ce, La and Nd follow each other closely. The fact that SO42−, NO3 and NH4+ are only moderately correlated with the particular pollutants with high enrichment factors such as Cd, Sb, Pb, Zn, Cu, As, Bi, Sn, Mo, Ni, Tl and V indicates that their source regions are more widespread. During an event in October 1997 the time trends for most minor and trace elements follow rather closely those for the major ions NH4+, SO42− and NO3. Back trajectories show that the transport from continental and marine European sources was the likely cause of the sample concentrations. EFs of trace elements in cloud water samples during the June and October event show a strong correlation with those obtained for urban particulate matter. Although both events are influenced by air masses of different origin, there is a good agreement between the EF signatures.  相似文献

The atmospheric chemical process was simulated using the Carbon Bond 4 (CB-4) model, the aqueous-phase chemistry in Regional Acid Deposition Model and the thermodynamic equilibrium relation of aerosols with the emission inventories of the Emission Database for Global Atmospheric Research, the database of China and South Korea and the Mesoscale Model version 2 (MM5) meteorological fields to examine the spatial distributions of the acidic pollutant concentrations in East Asia for the case of the long-lasting Yellow Sand event in April 1998. The present models simulate quite well the observed general trend and the diurnal variation of concentrations of gaseous pollutants, especially for O3 concentration. However, the model underestimates SO2 and NOx concentration but overestimates O3 concentration largely due to uncertainty in NOx and VOC emissions. It is found that the simulated gaseous pollutants such as SO2, NOx, and NH3 are not transported far away from the source regions but show significant diurnal variations of their concentrations. However, the daily variations of the concentrations are not significant due to invariant emission rates. On the other hand, concentrations of the transformed pollutants including SO42−, NH4+, and NO3 are found to have significant daily variations but little diurnal variations. The model-estimated deposition indicates that dry deposition is largely contributed by gaseous pollutants while wet deposition of pollutants is mainly contributed by the transformed pollutants.  相似文献

Totally nine measurement campaigns for ambient particles and SO2 have been conducted during the period of 1997–2000 in Qingdao in order to understand the characteristics of the particulate matter in coastal areas of China. The mass fractions of PM2.5, PM2.5−10 and PM>10 in TSP are 49%, 25% and 26%, respectively. The size distribution of particles mass concentrations in Qingdao shows bi-modal distribution. Mass fraction percentages of water-soluble ions in PM2.5, PM2.5−10 and PM>10 decreased from 62% to 35% and 21%. In fine particles, sulfate, nitrate and ammonium, secondary formed compounds, are major components, totally accounting for 50% of PM2.5 mass concentration. The ratios of sulfate, chloride, ammonium and potassium in PM2.5 for heating versus non-heating periods are 1.34, 1.80, 1.56 and 1.44, respectively. The ratio of nitrate is 3.02 and this high ratio could be caused by reduced volatilization at lower temperature. Sulfate concentrations are higher than nitrate in PM2.5. The chemical forms of sulfate and nitrate are probably (NH4)2SO4 and NH4NO3 and chloride depletion was observed.Backward trajectory analysis reflected possible influence of air pollutant transport to Qingdao local aerosol pollution.  相似文献

Abstract

Data from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Air Quality System, the Southeastern Aerosol Research and Characterization database, and the Assessment of Spatial Aerosol Composition in Atlanta database for 1999 through 2002 have been used to characterize error associated with instrument precision and spatial variability on the assessment of the temporal variation of ambient air pollution in Atlanta, GA. These data are being used in time series epidemiologic studies in which associations of acute respiratory and cardiovascular health outcomes and daily ambient air pollutant levels are assessed. Modified semivariograms are used to quantify the effects of instrument precision and spatial variability on the assessment of daily metrics of ambient gaseous pollutants (SO2, CO, NOx, and O3) and fine particulate matter ([PM2.5] PM2.5 mass, sulfate, nitrate, ammonium, elemental carbon [EC], and organic carbon [OC]). Variation because of instrument imprecision represented 7–40% of the temporal variation in the daily pollutant measures and was largest for the PM2.5 EC and OC. Spatial variability was greatest for primary pollutants (SO2, CO, NOx, and EC). Population–weighted variation in daily ambient air pollutant levels because of both instrument imprecision and spatial variability ranged from 20% of the temporal variation for O3 to 70% of the temporal variation for SO2 and EC. Wind rose plots, corrected for diurnal and seasonal pattern effects, are used to demonstrate the impacts of local sources on monitoring station data. The results presented are being used to quantify the impacts of instrument precision and spatial variability on the assessment of health effects of ambient air pollution in Atlanta and are relevant to the interpretation of results from time series health studies that use data from fixed monitors.  相似文献

The influence of humidity is considered on the concentration of the suspended particulate matter (SPM) measured with a β-ray counter. The humidity condition inside a small observatory where the counter is located is, in general, different from the ambient condition outside the observatory. From the measured values, the ambient SPM concentration is derived considering the hygroscopic effect of common aerosol species of sea salt (SS), (NH4)2SO4, NH4NO3 and NaNO3. In a case study conducted during September 2005, temperature and humidity were measured both inside and outside the observatory. The average value of the relative humidity is 48% for inside and 78% for outside, resulting in approximately 53% larger SPM mass concentration after the correction. Accordingly, the value of mass extinction efficiency, which is given by the ratio between the optically measured extinction coefficient and the mass concentration, becomes lower after the correction.  相似文献

In this study, fine particulate matter (PM2.5) emitted from a municipal solid waste incinerator (MSWI) was collected using dilution sampling method. Chemical compositions of the collected PM2.5 samples, including carbon content, metal elements, and water-soluble ions, were analyzed. Traditional in-stack hot sampling was simultaneously conducted to compare the influences of dilution on PM2.5 emissions and the characteristics of the bonded chemical species. The results, established by a dilution sampling method, show that PM2.5 and total particulate matter (TPM) emission factors were 61.6 ± 4.52 and 66.1 ± 5.27 g ton-waste?1, respectively. The average ratio of PM2.5/TPM is 0.93, indicating that more than 90% of PM emission from the MSWI was fine particulate. The major chemical species in PM2.5 included organic carbon (OC), Cl?, NH4+, elemental carbon (EC) and Si, which account for 69.7% of PM2.5 mass. OC was from the unburned carbon in the exhaust, which adsorbed onto the particulate during the cooling process. High Cl? emission is primarily attributable to wastes containing plastic bags made of polyvinyl chloride, salt in kitchen refuse and waste biomass, and so on. Minor species that account for 0.01–1% of PM2.5 mass included SO42-, K+, Na, K, NO3?, Al, Ca2+, Zn, Ca, Cu, Fe, Pb, and Mg. The mean ratio of dilution method/in-stack hot method was 0.454. The contents of water-soluble ions (Cl?, SO42-, NO3?) were significantly enriched in PM2.5 via gas-to-particle conversion in the dilution process. Results indicate that in-stack hot sampling would underestimate levels of these species in PM2.5.

Implications: PM2.5 samples from a municipal solid waste incinerator (MSWI) were collected simultaneously by a dilution sampling technique and a traditional in-stack method. PM2.5 emission factors and chemical speciation profiles were established. Dilution sampling provides more reliable data than in-stack hot sampling. The results can be applied to estimate the PM2.5 emission inventories of MSWI, and the source profile can be used for contribution estimate of chemical mass balance modeling.  相似文献

Ambient suspended particulate (PM2.5, PM2.5–10, TSP) was collected from June 1998 to February 2001 in Taichung, central Taiwan. In addition, the related water-soluble ionic species (Cl, NO3, SO42−, Na+, NH4+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+) and metallic species (Fe, Zn, Pb, Ni) were also analyzed in this study. The results showed that the concentrations of particulate mass are higher in the traffic site (CCRT) than the other sampling sites in this study. Also, the fine particle (PM2.5) concentration is the dominant species of the total suspended particles in Taichung, central Taiwan. The dominant species for PM2.5 are sulfate and ammonium at all sampling sites during the period of 1998–2001. The results of diurnal variation at THUC sampling site are also discussed in this study. Overall, acidic and secondary aerosol (Cl, NO3, SO42− and NH4+) is a more serious air pollutant issue in southern and central Taiwan than at several sites around the world. Therefore, ambient suspended particulate monitoring in Taichung, central Taiwan will be continuing in our following study to provide more information for the government to formulate environmental strategy.  相似文献

A receptor model of positive matrix factorization (PMF) was used to identify the emission sources of fine and coarse particulates in Bandung, a city located at about 150 km south-east of Jakarta. Total of 367 samples were collected at urban mixed site, Tegalega area, in Bandung City during wet and dry season in the period of 2001–2007. The samples of fine and coarse particulate matter were collected simultaneously using dichotomous samplers and mini-volume samplers. The Samples from dichotomous Samplers were analyzed for black carbon and elements while samples from mini-volume samplers were analyzed for ions. The species analyzed in this study were Na, Mg, Al, Si, K, Ca, Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Pb, Cl?, NO3?, SO42?, and NH4+. The data were then analyzed using PMF to determine the source factors. Different numbers of source factors were found during dry and wet season. During dry season, the main source factors for fine particles were secondary aerosol (NH4)2SO4, electroplating industry, vehicle emission, and biomass burning, while for coarse particles, the dominant source factors were electroplating industry, followed by aged sea salt, volcanic dust, soil dust, and lime dust. During the wet season, the main source factors for fine particulate matter were vehicle emission and secondary aerosol. Other sources detected were biomass burning, lime dust, soil and volcanic dust. While for coarse particulate matter, the main source factors were sulphate-rich industry, followed by lime dust, soil dust, industrial emission and construction dust.  相似文献

TSP and PM2.5 samples were collected at Xi'an, China during dust storms (DSs) and several types of pollution events, including haze, biomass burning, and firework displays. Aerosol mass concentrations were up to 2 times higher during the particulate matter (PM) events than on normal days (NDs), and all types of PM led to decreased visibility. Water-soluble ions (Na+, NH4+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, F?, Cl?, NO3?, and SO42?). were major aerosol components during the pollution episodes, but their concentrations were lower during DSs. NH4+, K+, F?, Cl?, NO3?, and SO42? were more abundant in PM2.5 than TSP but the opposite was true for Mg2+ and Ca2+. PM collected on hazy days was enriched with secondary species (NH4+, NO3?, and SO42) while PM from straw combustion showed high K+ and Cl?. Firework displays caused increases in K+ and also enrichments of NO3? relative to SO42?. During DSs, the concentrations of secondary aerosol components were low, but Ca2+ was abundant. Ion balance calculations indicate that PM from haze and straw combustion was acidic while the DSs samples were alkaline and the fireworks' PM was close to neutral. Ion ratios (SO42?/K+, NO3?/SO42?, and Cl?/K+) proved effective as indicators for different pollution episodes.  相似文献

Abstract

Visibility data collected from Kaohsiung City, Taiwan, for the past two decades indicated that the air pollutants have significantly degraded visibility in recent years. During our study period, the seasonal mean visibilities in spring, summer, fall, and winter were only 5.4, 9.1, 8.2, and 3.4 km, respectively. To ascertain how urban aerosols influence the visibility, we conducted concurrent visibility monitoring and aerosol sampling in 1999 to identify the principal causes of visibility impairments in the region. In this study, ambient aerosols were sampled and analyzed for 11 constituents, including water-soluble ions and carbon materials, to investigate the chemical composition of Kaohsiung aerosols. Stepwise regression method was used to correlate the impact of aerosol species on visibility impairments. Both seasonal and diurnal variation patterns were found from the monitoring of visibility. Our results showed that light scattering was attributed primarily to aerosols with sizes that range from 0.26 to 0.90 μm, corresponding with the wavelength region of visible light, which accounted for ~72% of the light scattering coefficient. Sulfate was a dominant component that affected both the light scattering coefficient and the visibility in the region. On average, (NH4)2SO4, NH4NO3, total carbon, and fine particulate matter (PM2.5)-remainder contributed 53%, 17%, 16%, and 14% to total light scattering, respectively. An empirical regression model of visibility based on sulfate, elemental carbon, and humidity was developed, and the comparison indicated that visibility in an urban area could be properly simulated by the equation derived herein.  相似文献
