The trends in and relationships between ambient air concentrations of sulfur dioxide and sulfate aerosols at 48 urban sites and 27 nonurban sites throughout the U.S. between 1963 and 1972 have been analyzed. The substantial decreases in ambient SO2 concentrations measured at urban sites in the eastern and midwestern U.S. are consistent with the corresponding reductions in local SO2 emissions, but these decreases have been accompanied by only modest decreases in ambient sulfate concentrations. Large differences in the amounts of SO2 emitted within individual air quality control regions are associated with much smaller differences in the corresponding ambient sulfate concentrations. Substantial changes in the patterns of SO2 emissions between air quality regions result in essentially no differences between ambient sulfate concentrations in those air quality regions. Comparisons of several air quality regions in the eastern and western U.S. with similar SO2 emission levels and patterns of emissions clearly demonstrates the higher ambient sulfate concentration levels in eastern air quality control regions. Relationships between SO2, sulfates, and vanadium concentrations at eastern nonurban U.S. sites cannot be explained by local emission sources. These various observed results can be best explained by long distance sulfur oxide transport with chemical conversion of SO2 to sulfates occurring over ranges of hundreds of kilometers. This conclusion has been suggested earlier and the present analysis strongly supports previous discussions. An impact of long range transport of sulfates is to emphasize the need for Consistent strategies for reduction of sulfur oxides throughout large geographical regions. Additions of large capacities involving elevated sources in mid-continental or western regions could result in significant increases in sulfate concentrations well downwind of such sources. Some of the types of research activities required to quantitate crucial experimental parameters are discussed.  相似文献

A methodology is developed to include wind flow effects in land use regression (LUR) models for predicting nitrogen dioxide (NO2) concentrations for health exposure studies. NO2 is widely used in health studies as an indicator of traffic-generated air pollution in urban areas. Incorporation of high-resolution interpolated observed wind direction from a network of 38 weather stations in a LUR model improved NO2 concentration estimates in densely populated, high traffic and industrial/business areas in Toronto-Hamilton urban airshed (THUA) of Ontario, Canada. These small-area variations in air pollution concentrations that are probably more important for health exposure studies may not be detected by sparse continuous air pollution monitoring network or conventional interpolation methods. Observed wind fields were also compared with wind fields generated by Global Environmental Multiscale-High resolution Model Application Project (GEM-HiMAP) to explore the feasibility of using regional weather forecasting model simulated wind fields in LUR models when observed data are either sparse or not available. While GEM-HiMAP predicted wind fields well at large scales, it was unable to resolve wind flow patterns at smaller scales. These results suggest caution and careful evaluation of regional weather forecasting model simulated wind fields before incorporating into human exposure models for health studies. This study has demonstrated that wind fields may be integrated into the land use regression framework. Such integration has a discernable influence on both the overall model prediction and perhaps more importantly for health effects assessment on the relative spatial distribution of traffic pollution throughout the THUA. Methodology developed in this study may be applied in other large urban areas across the world.  相似文献

Ozone measurements made from 5 sites in Hong Kong have been analyzed, including those from one upwind, one downwind, and three urban locales. The data are analyzed in terms of the seasonal and diurnal trends. A subset of data in autumn is further analyzed to study the relationship between the ozone spatial pattern and wind flow as well as other meteorological parameters. The results show that averaged ozone levels at most sites exhibit maxima in autumn, which appears to be a unique feature for eastern Asia. On average the daily maximum 1-h concentrations are found to be higher in the western (normally downwind) site than those on the eastern side and in urban areas. Examination of surface wind patterns and other meteorological parameters suggest that elevated ozone concentrations on the western side occur during the days with intense solar radiation, light winds, and in the presence of a unique wind circulation. The wind reversal in the western parts under the “convergence” flow is believed to be an important cause of the high-ozone events observed there. Such wind flow may re-circulate/transport nearby urban plumes (in this case the Hong Kong–Shenzhen urban complex). Examination of chemical data from the western site has shown that averaged afternoon SO2 to NOx ratios on days with wind reversal are larger than those of typical urban Hong Kong and that a significant SO2 enhancement was clearly indicated on several occasions. The SO2 enhancement may be interpreted as being the evidence to suggest the contribution of regional sources and/or Hong Kong’s power plants (both containing high SO2). A case study has shown that when moderately strong northwesterly wind prevails, elevated ozone and SO2 can be transported to western Hong Kong from the inner Pearl Delta region. This study has also indicated that under the impact of ENE winds the eastern side of Hong Kong is not frequently affected by the re-circulating ozone plumes present in the western side.  相似文献

A procedure is described for producing a sulfur dioxide (SO2) contaminated atmosphere within a body plethysmograph, exposing man to this atmosphere while maintaining the SO2 concentration at a given level, and measuring the concentration with less than a oneminute lag time. A syringe is used to introduce incremental volumes of SO2 limiting the maximum SO2 concentration in the chamber and assuring safety of the subject. A Titrilog SO2 analyzer with its rapid response characteristics provides quick measurement of the SO2 concentration. The body plethysmograph used in this manner serves simultaneously as a pulmonary function measuring device and as an exposure chamber.  相似文献

Two experimental monitoring campaigns were carried out in 2012 to investigate the air quality in the port of Naples, the most important in southern Italy for traffic of passengers and one of the most important for goods. Therefore, it represents an important air pollution source located close to the city of Naples. The concentrations of sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes) in the air were measured at 15 points inside the Naples port area through the use of passive samplers. In addition, a mobile laboratory was positioned in a fixed point inside the port area to measure continuous concentration of pollutants together with particulate matter, ambient parameters, and wind direction and intensity. The pollution levels monitored were compared with those observed in the urban area of Naples and in other Mediterranean ports. Even though the observation time was limited, measured concentrations were also compared with limit values established by European legislation. All the measured pollutants were below the limits with the exception of nitrogen dioxide: its average concentration during the exposition time exceeded the yearly limit value. A spatial analysis of data, according to the measured wind direction and intensity, provided information about the effects that ship emissions have on ambient air quality in the port area. The main evidence indicates that ship emissions influence sulfur dioxide concentration more than any other pollutants analyzed.

Implications: Two monitoring campaigns were carried out to measure BTEX, SO2, NO2, and PM10 (particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter <10 μm) air concentrations in the port of Naples. NO2 hourly average and PM10 daily average comply with European legislative standards. Spatial variation of pollutants long the axis corresponding to the prevailing wind direction seems to indicate a certain influence of ship emissions for SO2. For NO2 and PM10, a correlation between concentrations in the harbor and those measured by the air quality monitoring stations sited in the urban area of Naples was observed, indicating a possible contribution of the near road traffic to the air pollution in the port of Naples.  相似文献

This paper presents a statistical model that is capable of predicting ozone levels from precursor concentrations and meteorological conditions during daylight hours in the Shuaiba Industrial Area (SIA) of Kuwait. The model has been developed from ambient air quality data that was recorded for one year starting from December 1994 using an air pollution mobile monitoring station. The functional relationship between ozone level and the various independent variables has been determined by using a stepwise multiple regression modelling procedure. The model contains two terms that describe the dependence of ozone on nitrogen oxides (NOx) and nonmethane hydrocarbon precursor concentrations, and other terms that relate to wind direction, wind speed, sulphur dioxide (SO2) and solar energy. In the model, the levels of the precursors are inversely related to ozone concentration, whereas SO2 concentration, wind speed and solar radiation are positively correlated. Typically, 63 % of the variation in ozone levels can be explained by the levels of NOx. The model is shown to be statistically significant and model predictions and experimental observations are shown to be consistent. A detailed analysis of the ozone-temperature relationship is also presented; at temperatures less than 27 °C there is a positive correlation between temperature and ozone concentration whereas at temperatures greater than 27 °C a negative correlation is seen. This is the first time a non-monotonic relationship between ozone levels and temperature has been reported and discussed.  相似文献

Seasonal variations in atmospheric aerosol concentration and composition have been determined at two nearby sites, one urban and one rural, near Leeds, W. Yorkshire. Aerosols, sampled on a daily basis and collected in the size ranges < 2.5 μm and 2.5−15 μm, were analysed for total mass, SO2−4, NO3, Cl and NH+4. Dark smoke and SO2 were also measured at both sites. Results are given covering the period October 1982–September 1983. The average concentration of particles was higher at the urban site. The urban-rural difference in coarse particle concentration, which was about a factor of 2, was more significant than the difference in the fine particle concentration, which was only 1.3. Smoke and SO2 concentrations showed strong wintertime maxima and summertime minima. Fine NO3 and Cl concentrations also had pronounced wintertime maxima and summertime minima attributed to the variation in volatility of their ammonium salts. Total mass, SO2−4 and NH+4 did not show any clear seasonal variations. Anti-cyclonic conditions in summer resulted in elevated mass concentrations of secondary pollutants, e.g. SO2−4. The fine fraction contained ca 50% water-soluble inorganic ions at Leeds and slightly more at the rural site. These proportions showed little seasonal variation.  相似文献

A model for computing daily mean SO2 concentrations in Bergen, Norway, is developed and tested using SO2 measurements from seven winter seasons during the 1970s. The meteorological predictors used are daily mean temperature, wind speed and temperature at two levels. Source strength is estimated from daily mean temperature. Correlations between observed and estimated SO2 concentrations ranged between 0.8 and 0.9. Observed SO2 levels declined by about 40 % from beginning to end of the observation period due to decreased SO2 emission.  相似文献

The performance of the AERMOD air dispersion model under low wind speed conditions, especially for applications with only one level of meteorological data and no direct turbulence measurements or vertical temperature gradient observations, is the focus of this study. The analysis documented in this paper addresses evaluations for low wind conditions involving tall stack releases for which multiple years of concurrent emissions, meteorological data, and monitoring data are available. AERMOD was tested on two field-study databases involving several SO2 monitors and hourly emissions data that had sub-hourly meteorological data (e.g., 10-min averages) available using several technical options: default mode, with various low wind speed beta options, and using the available sub-hourly meteorological data. These field study databases included (1) Mercer County, a North Dakota database featuring five SO2 monitors within 10 km of the Dakota Gasification Company’s plant and the Antelope Valley Station power plant in an area of both flat and elevated terrain, and (2) a flat-terrain setting database with four SO2 monitors within 6 km of the Gibson Generating Station in southwest Indiana. Both sites featured regionally representative 10-m meteorological databases, with no significant terrain obstacles between the meteorological site and the emission sources. The low wind beta options show improvement in model performance helping to reduce some of the overprediction biases currently present in AERMOD when run with regulatory default options. The overall findings with the low wind speed testing on these tall stack field-study databases indicate that AERMOD low wind speed options have a minor effect for flat terrain locations, but can have a significant effect for elevated terrain locations. The performance of AERMOD using low wind speed options leads to improved consistency of meteorological conditions associated with the highest observed and predicted concentration events. The available sub-hourly modeling results using the Sub-Hourly AERMOD Run Procedure (SHARP) are relatively unbiased and show that this alternative approach should be seriously considered to address situations dominated by low-wind meander conditions.

Implications: AERMOD was evaluated with two tall stack databases (in North Dakota and Indiana) in areas of both flat and elevated terrain. AERMOD cases included the regulatory default mode, low wind speed beta options, and use of the Sub-Hourly AERMOD Run Procedure (SHARP). The low wind beta options show improvement in model performance (especially in higher terrain areas), helping to reduce some of the overprediction biases currently present in regulatory default AERMOD. The SHARP results are relatively unbiased and show that this approach should be seriously considered to address situations dominated by low-wind meander conditions.  相似文献

After severe eruptions of the volcano at Miyake Island in August 2000, a large amount of volcanic gas was released into the atmosphere. To simulate flows and dispersion of sulfur dioxide (SO2) over Miyake Island, a set of numerical models was developed. The multi-nesting method was adopted to reflect a realistic meteorological field and to sufficiently resolve the flow over the island with a diameter of 8 km. The outermost model was the Regional Spectral Model (RSM) of the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) with a horizontal grid size of 10 km. Finer atmospheric structure was simulated with the nonhydrostatic model jointly developed by the Meteorological Research Institute and the Numerical Prediction Division of JMA (MRI/NPD-NHM) with grid intervals of 2 km, 400 m and 100 m. Realistic topography of the island was represented in the innermost model. The Lagrangian particle method was applied to the dispersion model, which is driven by the meteorological field of the 100 m grid MRI/NPD-NHM. The random walk procedure was used to represent the turbulent diffusion. The model was verified in four cases. Simulated SO2 concentrations agreed well with observed concentrations at a monitoring station including temporal variation. Under a large synoptic change, however, accurate prediction became difficult. Further numerical experiments have been done to investigate characteristics of the flow and the distribution of SO2. Steady inflows, classified according to the surface wind speed and direction, were assumed. Simulated SO2 distribution on the ground apparently depends on the surface wind. Under relatively weak inflow, there is a large diurnal change in SO2 distribution, affected by the thermally induced flow. SO2 gas is widely spread downstream in the nighttime but hardly reaches the coastal area in the daytime. On the other hand, SO2 gas steadily reached the downstream coast with little diurnal variation under the stronger inflow. Ground temperature, as well as the static stability of the inflow, also influences downstream wind, turbulent diffusivity and SO2 distribution.  相似文献

A method for solving the non-reactive tracer continuity equation using a time splitting technique and a Galerkin technique with chapeau functions as finite elements for the horizontal advection has been developed and employed to simulate SO2 concentrations in the Kyongin region in Korea for a synoptic case of high pollution potential days in autumn with the relatively strong southwesterly geostrophic wind at the 850 hPa pressure level. The paired comparisons between hourly observed and the simulated SO2 concentrations are made to test the model performance. The result indicates that the present model simulates quite well horizontal distribution patterns of SO2 concentration. However, the simulated concentrations depend largely on the emission rate, suggesting the importance of accurate source identification for the accurate simulation of the concentration field.  相似文献

A case of unusually high concentrations of some urban air pollutants (CO, NO, SO2) in Turin (Northwestern Italy) is presented. This episode occurred during the late afternoon of 7 November 1995. This day was characterised by a strong northern foehn event in the morning, which followed the passage of a cold front. The analysis has been carried out by means of data derived from the urban and suburban air quality monitoring networks, of meteorological data (wind velocity, temperature and relative humidity) from the same network and from other networks in the region, and of the output of the numerical model LAMBO (operatively used by the Regional Meteorological Service of Emilia Romagna). The analysis of meteorological data appears to be in good correlation with the distribution of the air pollutant concentrations; in particular, the high concentrations observed in the late afternoon are due to a strong thin inversion layer near the ground, developing immediately after the sudden end of the foehn episode.  相似文献

A technique has been employed by which transboundary mass fluxes of SO2, SO42−, NOx, NO3, and O3 are assessed. As an example the results of one measuring flight are presented. This flight was carried out along the eastern and western border of the Netherlands. An uncertainty analysis yields that the accuracy of calculated transboundary mass fluxes is most dependent on the accuracy of the values for the depth of the mixing layer and the wind velocity. Mass fluxes calculated in this case study appear to be accurate within ± 55 %, apart from inaccuracies due to non-representativity of concentration and wind data with respect to the mixing layer. On the basis of the uncertainty analysis, recommendations for further improvement of the method are made so that a reduction of this ± 55 % to ± 20 % can be achieved. Finally, conclusions about the origin of the observed pollution are drawn.  相似文献

Forty operational measurements by aircraft are described, which were performed during 1985–1987. The purpose was to obtain an overall picture of transboundary transports of SO2, NOx sulfate, nitrate and O3 between the F.R.G. and its neighbours. Transboundary fluxes were calculated by means of measurement results with respect to the concentrations of the considered pollutants, depth of the planetary boundary layer, wind speed and wind direction. The largest SO2 fluxes have been observed across the eastern border of the F.R.G., during periods characterized by easterly winds (300–2500 ton SO2 h−1 across a 500–600 km border section). The major fraction of this SO2 appeared to have originated from the easterly neighbours of the F.R.G. and to a lesser extent also from countries further eastward. During easterly winds it has been observed that SO2, which originated from countries east of the F.R.G., contributed considerably to SO2 fluxes across the western border to countries west of the F.R.G. The results of the measurement flights as presented have provided valuable indications about transboundary transports of pollutants despite considerable uncertainties in the fluxes due to inaccuracies in the concentration profiles, wind data and depth of the planetary boundary layer.  相似文献

Concentration profiles for hydrogen fluoride(HF), sulfur dioxide(SO2), ozone (O3), nitrogen dioxide(NO2), and nitric oxide(NO) generated in a standardized alfalfa canopy are presented. Wind, light, temperature, and carbon dioxide(CO2) profiles, canopy pollutant uptake rates, and canopy structural data are also given. Canopy pollutant concentration profile characteristics were studied to evaluate the relative potentials for major air pollutants to penetrate into canopies. The study was conducted in an environmental growth chamber equipped to control automatically environmental conditions and monitor continuously gas exchange rates. HF, SO2, and NO2 profiles suggested that these gases were removed efficiently by the upper portion of the canopy as well as by the immediate subsurface vegetation. The steady state HF profile showed the greatest displacement within the canopy. The NO profile was displaced the least. The uptake rate of NO by plants was apparently too slow in comparison with gas transport and mixing within the canopy to affect the internal profile substantially. O3 appeared to be readily deposited on the surface tissues, but the deeper tissues in the canopy had less effect on the concentration profile. Data are also presented to show the relationship between NO2 concentration within the canopy and changes in the air concentration above the vegetation. The results indicated that gas transport between the atmosphere and canopy interior was rapid. The data presented should be of current interest to agriculturists, researchers, administrators, and environmental planners concerned with effects of air pollutants on plants and on the fate of pollutants in the microenvironment.  相似文献

The representativeness of point measurements in urban areas is limited due to the strong heterogeneity of the atmospheric flows in cities. To get information on air quality in the gaps between measurement points, and have a 3D field of pollutant concentration, Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) models can be used. However, unsteady simulations during time periods of the order of months, often required for regulatory purposes, are not possible for computational reasons. The main objective of this study is to develop a methodology to evaluate the air quality in a real urban area during large time periods by means of steady CFD simulations. One steady simulation for each inlet wind direction was performed and factors like the number of cars inside each street, the length of streets and the wind speed and direction were taken into account to compute the pollutant concentration. This approach is only valid in winter time when the pollutant concentrations are less affected by atmospheric chemistry. A model based on the steady-state Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes equations (RANS) and standard k-? turbulence model was used to simulate a set of 16 different inlet wind directions over a real urban area (downtown Pamplona, Spain). The temporal series of NOx and PM10 and the spatial differences in pollutant concentration of NO2 and BTEX obtained were in agreement with experimental data. Inside urban canopy, an important influence of urban boundary layer dynamics on the pollutant concentration patterns was observed. Large concentration differences between different zones of the same square were found. This showed that concentration levels measured by an automatic monitoring station depend on its location in the street or square, and a modelling methodology like this is useful to complement the experimental information. On the other hand, this methodology can also be applied to evaluate abatement strategies by redistributing traffic emissions.  相似文献

Abstract

A three-dimensional mathematical model was used to predict the removal efficiency of a venturi scrubber for SO2 absorption into a water and alkaline solution. In order to obtain better results, nonuniform droplet concentration distribution was considered. The results of the model with nonuniform droplet concentration distribution are compared with several sets of experimental data, as well as with prediction data of a mathematical model with uniform droplet concentration distribution. Without exception, all comparisons indicated that including nonuniformity of droplet concentration distribution in the model will significantly improve the agreement between the experimental data and predicted values.  相似文献
