The term “wet scrubber” or simply “scrubber,” for the purpose of this report, is intended to include any device using liquid to effect the removal of solid or liquid particles which are entrained in process air or gas streams. This guide is intended to provide information required for the selection and performance evaluation of all types of scrubbers installed for the primary purpose of removing such particulates from any process gas stream. It is not intended to cover scrubbers for the collection of gaseous and/or vapor constituents which involve gas absorption mechanisms. 相似文献

Abstract Many large metropolitan areas experience elevated concentrations of ground-level ozone pollution during the summertime “smog season”. Local environmental or health agencies often need to make daily air pollution forecasts for public advisories and for input into decisions regarding abatement measures and air quality management. Such forecasts are usually based on statistical relationships between weather conditions and ambient air pollution concentrations. Multivariate linear regression models have been widely used for this purpose, and well-specified regressions can provide reasonable results. However, pollution-weather relationships are typically complex and nonlinear—especially for ozone—properties that might be better captured by neural networks. This study investigates the potential for using neural networks to forecast ozone pollution, as compared to traditional regression models. Multiple regression models and neural networks are examined for a range of cities under different climate and ozone regimes, enabling a comparative study of the two approaches. Model comparison statistics indicate that neural network techniques are somewhat (but not dramatically) better than regression models for daily ozone prediction, and that all types of models are sensitive to different weather-ozone regimes and the role of persistence in aiding predictions. 相似文献

A large number of pressurized coal gasification processes being developed propose to use venturi scrubbers for particulate removal at high pressures. Theoretical predictions based on venturi scrubber performance models indicate that particle collection efficiency will decrease severely in these high gas pressure applications. An exploratory theoretical and experimental program was performed to study the effect of gas pressure on venturi scrubber performance. Experiments were done on a 0.47 m3/s (1000 acfm) pilot scale venturi scrubber. Particle collection performance was determined as a function of scrubber pressure drop for venturi scrubbers operating In the range of 1-10 atm total pressure. Experimental results confirmed that the particle collection efficiency of venturi scrubbers decreases for a given scrubber pressure drop as total gas pressure Is increased. To achieve the same particle collection efficiency, the pressure drop across a venturi scrubber operated at 10 atm Is about 10 times that of the same scrubber operated at 1 atm pressure. 相似文献

ABSTRACT The size, composition, and concentration of particulate matter (PM) vary with location and time. Several monitoring/sampling programs are operated in California to characterize PM less than 2.5 and 10 µm in aerodynamic diameter (PM2.5 and PM10). This paper presents a broad summary of the spatial and temporal variations observed in ambient PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations in California. Many areas that have high PM10 concentrations also have relatively high PM2.5 concentrations, and data indicate that a significant portion of the PM10 air quality problem is caused by PM2.5. To develop effective plans for attaining the ambient PM standards, improved understanding of these unique problems is needed. Since 1989, pollution control efforts—whether specifically targeted for particulate matter or indirectly via controls on gaseous emissions—have caused annual average PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations to decline at most sites in California. 相似文献

An experimental investigation has been carried out to examine the effect of scale-up on the performance of scrubbers for a wide range of operating conditions. A pilot plant with a maximum air flow rate of 400 cfm and a water flow rate of 4 gpm was used for this study. For the same operating conditions, the performance of 1.5 in. orifice type scrubber was found better than that of 1.0 in. size. The results were categorized according to the size of the particles, classed as large (1.5 to 3.5μ diam), medium (0.6 to 1.5μ diam) and small (less than O.6μ diam). Although the magnitude of improvement of the collection efficiency was dependent on the operating conditions, differences to the extent of 20% were obtained. The improvement of the collection efficiency for the larger scrubber was found to be due to the influence of the main stream turbulence. 相似文献

ABSTRACT Guidance for the performance evaluation of three-dimensional air quality modeling systems for particulate matter and visibility is presented. Four levels are considered: operational, diagnostic, mechanistic, and probabilistic evaluations. First, a comprehensive model evaluation should be conducted in at least two distinct geographical locations and for several meteorological episodes. Next, streamlined evaluations can be conducted for other similar applications if the comprehensive evaluation is deemed satisfactory. In all cases, the operational evaluation alone is insufficient, and some diagnostic evaluation must always be carried out. Recommendations are provided for designing field measurement programs that can provide the data needed for such model performance evaluations. 相似文献

ABSTRACT Recent epidemiological studies have consistently shown that the acute mortality effects of high concentrations of ambient particulate matter (PM), documented in historic air pollution episodes, may also be occurring at the low to moderate concentrations of ambient PM found in modern urban areas. In London in December 1952, the unexpected deaths due to PM exposure could be identified and counted as integers by the coroners. In modern times, the PM-related deaths cannot be as readily identified, and they can only be inferred as fractional average daily increases in mortality rates using sophisticated statistical filtering and analyses of the air quality and mortality data. The causality of the relationship between exposure to ambient PM and acute mortality at these lower modern PM concentrations has been questioned because of a perception that there is little significant correlation in time between the ambient PM concentrations and measured personal exposure to PM from all sources (ambient PM plus indoor-generated PM). This article shows that the critical factor supporting the plausibility of a linear PM mortality relationship is the expected high correlation in time of people's exposure to PM of ambient origin with measured ambient PM concentrations, as used in the epidemiological time series studies. The presence of indoor and personal sources of PM masks this underlying relationship, leading to confusion in the scientific literature about the strong underlying temporal relationship between personal exposure to PM of ambient origin and ambient PM concentration. The authors show that the sources of PM of non-ambient origin operate independently of the ambient PM concentrations, so that the mortality effect of non-ambient PM, if any, must be independent of the effects of the ambient PM exposures. 相似文献

Abstract A microanalytical method suitable for the quantitative determination of the sugar anhydride levoglucosan in low-volume samples of atmospheric fine particulate matter (PM) has been developed and validated. The method incorporates two sugar anhydrides as quality control standards. The recovery standard sedoheptulosan (2,7-anhydro-β-D-altro-heptulopyranose) in 20 μL solvent is added onto samples of the atmospheric fine PM and aged for 1 hr before ultrasonic extraction with ethylacetate/ triethylamine. The extract is reduced in volume, an internal standard is added (1,5-anhydro-D-mannitol), and a portion of the extract is derivatized with 10% by volume N-trimethylsilylimidazole. The derivatized extract is analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The recovery of levoglucosan using this procedure was 69 ± 6% from five filters amended with 2 μg levoglu-cosan, and the reproducibility of the assay is 9%. The limit of detection is ~0.1 μg/mL, which is equivalent to ~3.5 ng/m3 for a 10 L/min sampler or ~8.7 ng/m3 for a 4 L/min personal sampler (assuming 24-hr integrated samples). We demonstrated that levoglucosan concentrations in collocated samples (expressed as ng/m3) were identical irrespective of whether samples were collected by PM with aerodynamic diameter ≤2.5 μm or PM with aerodynamic diameter ≤10 μm impactors. It was also demonstrated that X-ray fluorescence analysis of samples of atmospheric PM, before levoglucosan determinations, did not alter the levels of levoglucosan. 相似文献

A laboratory study was conducted of the heterogeneous catalysis of sulfur dioxide at ppm concentrations in air by insoluble particles of CaCO2, V2O5, Fe203, flyash from a coal-burning power plant, MnCO2, activated carbon, and suspended particulate matter from urban air. The investigalion was performed by utilizing a new technique for aerosol stabilization which consists of depositing the aerosol on Teflon beads in a fluidized bed. The Teflon beads with deposited aerosol particles were then packed into a flow reactor. Progress of the chemical reaction of SO2 with deposited particles was continuously monitored by determining the SO2 concentrations in the reactor effluent with a microcoulometer. In this investigation, CaCOg, V2O5, and flyash were essentially inert to SO2 at room temperature. Fe2O3, activated carbon, MnO2, and suspended particulate matter from urban air sorbed SO2 from air streams with up to 14.4 ppm SO2 in air. Evidence is presented which suggests that a substantial part of the sorbed SO2 was physically adsorbed. Bioassay procedures which utilize pulmonary flow resistance changes in guinea pigs to monitor response to inhaled SO2-aerosol mixtures in air have indicated the weak or non-potentiating capacity of insoluble aerosols as contrasted to soluble aerosols. Potentiating response of an aerosol appears to be strongly associated with reaction of SO2 in a water droplet containing aerosol ions and not with physically adsorbed SO2 on an insoluble aerosol. 相似文献

Solid particulate matter, mainly carbon, emitted into the air from the combustion of fossil fuels contains a variety of organic species adsorbed on it. In our examination of these particulates from the combustion of kerosene type fuels in a gas turbine engine, attention was focused on polynuclear aromatic compounds, phenols, nitrosamines, and total organics. Polynuclears were determined by HPLC, GC/MS, and NMR examination. Phenols and nitrosamines were isolated and then measured by gas chromatography using a flame ionization detector and nitrogen detector. Total organics were determined by a backflush chromatographic procedure. The particulates were collected using a high capacity pumping system and 293 mm diameter teflon filters through which was passed up to 43 m3 of exhaust gas. Extraction of the organic matter was done in a Soxhlet extractor using hexane usually. The engine was operated at idle, approach, climb, and takeoff power settings with low sulfur and high sulfur (0.25%) fuels. Most of the PAH were small 3 and 4 fused ring compounds with very few, at low concentrations, of 5 and 6 fused ring species. No nitrosamines were found and except in a few cases, at low levels, no phenols. PNA and total organic levels decreased with increase in a power setting and were higher in the exhaust from low sulfur fuels. Less than 1% of the organic matter emitted by the engine was absorbed on the particulate matter. The body of information presented in the paper is directed to individuals concerned with the nature of emissions from gas turbine engines. The work was supported by a contract with the Environmental Protection Agency. 相似文献

ABSTRACT The current status of the mathematical modeling of atmospheric particulate matter (PM) is reviewed in this paper. Simulating PM requires treating various processes, including the formation of condensable species, the gas/ particle partitioning of condensable compounds, and in some cases, the evolution of the particle size distribution. The algorithms available to simulate these processes are reviewed and discussed. Eleven 3-dimensional (3-D) Eulerian air quality models for PM are reviewed in terms of their formulation and past applications. Results of past performance evaluations of 3-D Eulerian PM models are presented. Currently, 24-hr average PM2.5 concentrations appear to be predicted within 50% for urban-scale domains. However, there are compensating errors among individual particulate species. The lowest errors tend to be associated with SO4 2-, while NO3 -, black carbon (BC), and organic carbon (OC) typically show larger errors due to uncertainties in emissions inventories and the prediction of the secondary OC fraction. Further improvements and performance evaluations are recommended. 相似文献

Abstract Many studies have shown strong associations between particulate matter (PM) levels and a variety of health outcomes, leading to changes in air quality standards in many regions, especially the United States and Europe. Kuwait, a desert country located on the Persian Gulf, has a large petroleum industry with associated industrial and urban land uses. It was marked by environmental destruction from the 1990 Iraqi invasion and subsequent oil fires. A detailed particle characterization study was conducted over 12 months in 2004–2005 at three sites simultaneously with an additional 6 months at one of the sites. Two sites were in urban areas (central and southern) and one in a remote desert location (northern). This paper reports the concentrations of particles less than 10 µm in diameter (PM10) and fine PM (PM2.5), as well as fine particle nitrate, sulfate, elemental carbon (EC), organic carbon (OC), and elements measured at the three sites. Mean annual concentrations for PM10 ranged from 66 to 93 µg/m3 across the three sites, exceeding the World Health Organization (WHO) air quality guidelines for PM10 of 20 µg/m3. The arithmetic mean PM2.5 concentrations varied from 38 and 37 µg/m3 at the central and southern sites, respectively, to 31 µg/m3 at the northern site. All sites had mean PM2.5 concentrations more than double the U.S. National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS) for PM2.5. Coarse particles comprised 50–60% of PM10. The high levels of PM10 and large fraction of coarse particles comprising PM10 are partially explained by the resuspension of dust and soil from the desert crust. However, EC, OC, and most of the elements were significantly higher at the urbanized sites, compared with the more remote northern site, indicating significant pollutant contributions from local mobile and stationary sources. The particulate levels in this study are high enough to generate substantial health impacts and present opportunities for improving public health by reducing airborne PM. 相似文献

ABSTRACT Several studies conducted in U.S. cities report an association between acute exposures to particulate matter (PM), usually measured as PM10, and mortality. Evidence of high concentrations of PM10 in Eastern Europe and in large metropolitan areas outside of the United States, such as Mexico City and Bangkok, underscores the need to determine whether these same associations occur outside of the United States. In addition, conducting studies of mortality and air pollution in regions that have distinctly different seasonal patterns than those of the United States provides an effective opportunity to assess the potentially confounding aspects of seasonality. Over the last few years, daily measures of ambient PM10 have been collected in Bangkok, a tropical city of over 6 million people. In this metropolitan area, PM10 consists largely of fine particles generated from diesel- and gasoline-powered automobiles, and from two-stroke motorcycle engines. Our analysis involved the examination of the relationship between PM10 and daily mortality for 1992 through 1995. In addition to counts of daily natural mortality (total mortality net of accidents, homicides, and suicides), the data were compiled to assess both cardiovascular and respiratory mortality, and natural mortality by age group. A multivariate Poisson regression model was used to explain daily mortality while controlling for several covariates including temperature, humidity, day of the week, season, and time. The analysis indicated a statistically significant association between PM10 and all of the alternative measures of mortality. The results suggest a 10-µg/m3 change in daily PM10 is associated with a 1–2% increase in natural mortality, a 1–2% increase in cardiovascular mortality, and a 3–6% increase in respiratory mortality. These relative risks are generally consistent with or greater than those reported in most studies undertaken in the United States. 相似文献

ABSTRACT Measurements collected using five real-time continuous airborne particle monitors were compared to measurements made using reference filter-based samplers at Bakers-field, CA, between December 2, 1998, and January 31, 1999. The purpose of this analysis was to evaluate the suitability of each instrument for use in a real-time continuous monitoring network designed to measure the mass of airborne particles with an aerodynamic diam less than 2.5 μm (PM2.5) under wintertime conditions in the southern San Joaquin Valley. Measurements of airborne particulate mass made with a beta attenuation monitor (BAM), an integrating nephelometer, and a continuous aerosol mass monitor (CAMM) were found to correlate well with reference measurements made with a filter-based sampler. A Dusttrak aerosol sampler overestimated airborne particle concentrations by a factor of ~3 throughout the study. Measurements of airborne particulate matter made with a tapered element oscillating microbalance (TEOM) were found to be lower than the reference filter-based measurements by an amount approximately equal to the concentration of NH4NO3 observed to be present in the airborne particles. The performance of the Dusttrak sampler and the integrating nephelometer was affected by the size distribution of airborne particulate matter. The performance of the BAM, the integrating nephelometer, the CAMM, the Dusttrak sampler, and the TEOM was not strongly affected by temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, or wind direction within the range of conditions encountered in the current study. Based on instrument performance, the BAM, the integrating nephelometer, and the CAMM appear to be suitable candidates for deployment in a real-time continuous PM2.5 monitoring network in central California for the range of winter conditions and aerosol composition encountered during the study. 相似文献

Abstract The organic carbon (OC)/elemental carbon (EC) tracer method is applied to the Pittsburgh, PA, area to estimate the contribution of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) to the monthly average concentration of organic particu-late matter (PM) during 1995. An emissions inventory is constructed for the primary emissions of OC and EC in the area of interest. The ratio of primary emissions of OC to those of EC ranges between 2.4 in the winter months and 1.0 in the summer months. A mass balance model and ambient measurements were used to assess the accuracy of the emissions inventory. It is estimated to be accurate to within 50%. The results from this analysis show a strong monthly dependence on SOA contribution to the total organic PM concentration, varying from near zero during winter months to 50% or more of the total OC concentration in the summer. 相似文献

Abstract Field data for coarse particulate matter ([PM] PM10) and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) were collected at selected sites in Southeast Kansas from March 1999 to October 2000, using portable MiniVol particulate samplers. The purpose was to assess the influence on air quality of four industrial facilities that burn hazardous waste in the area located in the communities of Chanute, Independence, Fredonia, and Coffeyville. Both spatial and temporal variation were observed in the data. Variation because of sampling site was found to be statistically significant for PM10 but not for PM2.5. PM10 concentrations were typically slightly higher at sites located within the four study communities than at background sites. Sampling sites were located north and south of the four targeted sources to provide upwind and downwind monitoring pairs. No statistically significant differences were found between upwind and downwind samples for either PM10 or PM2.5, indicating that the targeted sources did not contribute significantly to PM concentrations. Wind direction can frequently contribute to temporal variation in air pollutant concentrations and was investigated in this study. Sampling days were divided into four classifications: predominantly south winds, predominantly north winds, calm/variable winds, and winds from other directions. The effect of wind direction was found to be statistically significant for both PM10 and PM2.5. For both size ranges, PM concentrations were typically highest on days with predominantly south winds; days with calm/variable winds generally produced higher concentrations than did those with predominantly north winds or those with winds from “other” directions. The significant effect of wind direction suggests that regional sources may exert a large influence on PM concentrations in the area. 相似文献

ABSTRACT Time-series of daily mortality data from May 1992 to September 1995 for various portions of the seven-county Philadelphia, PA, metropolitan area were analyzed in relation to weather and a variety of ambient air quality parameters. The air quality data included measurements of size-classified PM, SO4 2-, and H+ that had been collected by the Harvard School of Public Health, as well as routine air pollution monitoring data. Because the various pollutants of interest were measured at different locations within the metropolitan area, it was necessary to test for spatial sensitivity by comparing results for different combinations of locations. Estimates are presented for single pollutants and for multiple-pollutant models, including gaseous pollutants and mutually exclusive components of PM (PM2.5 and coarse particles, SO4 2- and non-SO4 2- portions of total suspended particulate [TSP] and PM10), measured on the day of death and the previous day. We concluded that associations between air quality and mortality were not limited to data collected in the same part of the metropolitan area; that is, mortality for one part may be associated with air quality data from another, not necessarily neighboring, part. Significant associations were found for a wide variety of gaseous and particulate pollutants, especially for peak O3. Using joint regressions on peak O3 with various other pollutants, we found that the combined responses were insensitive to the specific other pollutant selected. We saw no systematic differences according to particle size or chemistry. In general, the associations between daily mortality and air pollution depended on the pollutant or the PM metric, the type of collection filter used, and the location of sampling. Although peak O3 seemed to exhibit the most consistent mortality responses, this finding should be confirmed by analyzing separate seasons and other time periods. 相似文献

Abstract In this study, experiments were performed with a bench-scale tube-type wet electrostatic precipitator (wESPs) to investigate its effectiveness for the removal of mass- and number-based diesel particulate matter (DPM), hydrocarbons (HCs), carbon monoxide (CO), and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) from diesel exhaust emissions. The concentration of ozone (O3) present in the exhaust that underwent a nonthermal plasma treatment process inside the wESP was also measured. A nonroad diesel generator operating at varying load conditions was used as a stationary diesel emission source. The DPM mass analysis was conducted by means of isokinetic sampling and the DPM mass concentration was determined by a gravimetric method. An electrical low-pressure impactor (ELPI) was used to quantify the DPM number concentration. The HC compounds, n-alkanes, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were collected on a moisture-free quartz filter together with a PUF/XAD/PUF cartridge and extracted in dichloromethane with sonication. Gas chromatography (GC)/mass spectroscopy (MS) was used to determine HC concentrations in the extracted solution. A calibrated gas combustion analyzer (Testo 350) and an O3 analyzer were used for quantifying the inlet and outlet concentrations of CO and NOx (nitric oxide [NO] + nitrogen dioxide [NO2]), and O3 in the diesel exhaust stream. The wESP was capable of removing approximately 67–86% of mass- and number-based DPM at a 100% exhaust volumetric flow rate generated from 0- to 75-kW engine loads. At 75-kW engine load, increasing gas residence time from approximately 0.1 to 0.4 sec led to a significant increase of DPM removal efficiency from approximately 67 to more than 90%. The removal of n-alkanes, 16 PAHs, and CO in the wESP ranged from 31 to 57% and 5 to 38%, respectively. The use of the wESP did not significantly affect NOx concentration in diesel exhaust. The O3 concentration in diesel exhaust was measured to be less than 1 ppm. The main mechanisms responsible for the removal of these pollutants from diesel exhaust are discussed. 相似文献
